  1. Greetings, all of you who are watching or listening today, and if you're just listening,

  2. tuning in for the first time, I'm glad that you are.

  3. We've been working through the Gospel of John, the story of Jesus as a church together,

  4. and we're going to continue on in that story today.

  5. If you have a Bible, I encourage you to grab it and to open it up to the Gospel of John.

  6. We're in chapter 5 of the Gospel of John.

  7. And as we continue on through this, we're about to get into a section here that is really a goldmine.

  8. It's a place where, I mean, we've seen all kinds of glorious truth about Jesus revealed up until this point

  9. through the narrative sections that we've looked at.

  10. But in these verses, Jesus, all the way from verse 19 to 47, it's all Jesus' words.

  11. And so this section is just loaded with rich statements from Jesus,

  12. which reveal all kinds of wonderful truths, which we're looking forward to seeing.

  13. Jesus is going to tell us a little bit more about this mysterious and wonderful relationship that he has with his Father.

  14. He's going to talk to us about the extent of his authority and power and where it comes from.

  15. He's going to talk to us about the gift of eternal life and what we need to do to receive it.

  16. He's going to talk to us about the gift of Jesus.

  17. He's going to talk to us about the gift of Jesus.

  18. He's going to talk about various testimonies which confirm just who he is.

  19. He's going to talk about how the religious leaders have missed the mark and why, a little bit of why.

  20. And he's also going to reveal just what he knows is going on in their hearts.

  21. So this is a loaded section.

  22. It's a gold mine.

  23. We could just set up shop here.

  24. We could read and study and meditate and memorize and then go back and do it all again

  25. and still not get to the end of all that's here.

  26. So I'm hoping that as we begin to dig into these words today that we'll see something of the riches that are here for us

  27. and really we'll just be scratching the surface.

  28. But I hope that as you start to see all of these deposits of glorious truth here

  29. that you'll kind of be aware of them so that you can begin to dig into those on your own.

  30. At home.

  31. So let's go to the word.

  32. But before we do, let's pray.

  33. Father in heaven, we thank you that you have given us these precious words which your son Jesus spoke.

  34. And now as we read and listen to them, Lord, would you help us to see and understand what you want us to see and understand here.

  35. Would you allow our hearts to feel the weight of these words and press them into our spirit and our souls.

  36. Help us to see the glory of Jesus and the glory that you have.

  37. We ask this in his name.

  38. Amen.

  39. All right.

  40. So verse 19 is where we are at today.

  41. And it says this.

  42. Jesus gave them this answer.

  43. Now, this comes in the context of a larger story.

  44. We should probably just remember where we're at.

  45. Jesus is in Jerusalem.

  46. Jerusalem.

  47. And he has just recently healed a man who couldn't walk for 38 years at the pool of Bethesda.

  48. And he did that on the Sabbath day.

  49. He told him to pick up his mat and carry it.

  50. The man was healed and he was carrying it.

  51. And when the religious leaders heard that Jesus was the one who had done this and told him to carry his mat on the Sabbath, they began to go after Jesus.

  52. And John tells us to persecute him.

  53. There's a larger story going on here.

  54. The religious leaders were already going after Jesus.

  55. They wanted him dead.

  56. And John tells us that this charge of breaking the Sabbath was the way that they were trying to get at him and to secure that outcome.

  57. So we saw last Sunday how they went after him back in verse 16, 17, 18 and charged him with breaking the Sabbath.

  58. What are you doing working on the Sabbath?

  59. And Jesus gave this wonderful defense.

  60. My father is always at his work to this very day.

  61. And I too am working.

  62. So he didn't deny that he was working.

  63. He admitted to working on the Sabbath.

  64. And kind of got himself off the hook in a sense by saying, well, God isn't guilty for working on the Sabbath.

  65. My father and neither am I.

  66. And this response really got to the religious leaders.

  67. John told us back there in verse 18 that because he said this, they tried all the more to kill him.

  68. Not only was he breaking the Sabbath, at least in their view, but he was even calling God his own father, making himself equal with God.

  69. So this is the thoughts that are going on in their hearts and minds.

  70. Like, who does this guy think he is doing these things, working on the Sabbath and then claiming God as his own father?

  71. And that's why he can do these things on the Sabbath.

  72. And we had a bit of a look at what Jesus really was, I think, saying here.

  73. God isn't guilty for working on the Sabbath because that law doesn't apply to him or his work.

  74. And Jesus says, neither am I.

  75. And the reason that we pulled out there, drew out, was because the work that Jesus does is God's work.

  76. It is the Father's work.

  77. And so the law of the Sabbath doesn't apply.

  78. And this comes through even more clearly in another passage in John, John 14, verse 10.

    John 14:10

  79. Jesus says this,

  80. So he's not guilty for breaking the Sabbath.

  81. Why?

  82. Because it's the Father living in him who is working.

  83. This is God at work here.

  84. And so the Sabbath laws don't apply.

  85. Well, the religious leaders are upset by this.

  86. They hear in this a claim from Jesus to be divine, to be on the same level as God, to be equal with God.

  87. How does Jesus respond to this?

  88. That's what we read about in verse 19.

  89. Jesus gave them this answer.

  90. Very truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself.

  91. He can do only what he sees his Father doing.

  92. Because whatever the Father does, the Son also does.

  93. Now we want to slow it down and just look at these words.

  94. We really want to understand this relationship between Jesus and his Father.

  95. I mean, this is something that we've already seen glimpses of already up to this point through the gospel.

  96. Let's remember a few of those.

  97. Back in chapter 1, verse 14, John wrote this.

  98. The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.

  99. We have seen his glory.

  100. Glory of the one and only Son who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

  101. So, Jesus, the divine Word, the Word who was with God and was God at the beginning before anything was made,

  102. he became flesh.

  103. He took on human flesh and lived among us.

  104. He is the one and only Son, John says in verse 14, who came from the Father.

  105. There are other ways that Jesus coming from the Father is described.

  106. Probably the most familiar is John 3, 16.

  107. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son.

  108. So, his coming from the Father into our world is described as being given by God to the world.

  109. In the next verse, verse 17.

  110. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

  111. Not only has he come from the Father and has he been given by the Father, but he has been sent by the Father into the world.

  112. We see the intentionality of God in this.

  113. These all describe how Jesus, this man that we see walking among us, got here, where he is from.

  114. But why has he come?

  115. Well, we've seen a number of answers to that question so far in John's Gospel as well.

  116. In John 3, 16.

  117. He gave his one and only Son in order that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

  118. So, God gave his Son to the world so that people of the world might believe in him and be spared what they deserve.

  119. That is, to perish because of their sins against God and instead receive this good gift of eternal life.

  120. We see this spelled out for us again in verse 17 of chapter 3.

  121. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

  122. So, he has given and sent his Son into the world in order to save people of the world.

  123. Jesus has come from the Father on a rescue mission.

  124. He has come to rescue.

  125. And not only has he come to rescue, but he has come to reveal to people who God is.

  126. And we saw this back in John chapter 1, verse 18.

    John 1:18

  127. John wrote this,

  128. No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God, and is in closest relationship with the Father.

  129. He has made him, that is the Father, known.

  130. So, the one and only Son has made the Father, God, whom no one has ever seen, known.

  131. So, Jesus, not only has he come to rescue, but he has come to reveal just who God is.

  132. And we hear in these words that the Son is in closest relationship with the Father, says John.

  133. There's this closeness, this deep intimacy.

  134. There's this relationship between Father and Son.

  135. And we see glimpses of this relationship throughout the Gospel.

  136. We've seen a few already.

  137. We saw it when Jesus was in Jerusalem at the temple courts.

  138. As he was flipping the tables and driving out the sellers and the money changers.

  139. He said, Stop turning my Father's house into a market.

  140. We saw this passion, this love, this fierce loyalty to his Father.

  141. And to his Father's glory and honor.

  142. We saw it again in, kind of from the other side of the relationship in John chapter 3, verse 35.

    John 3:35

  143. John writes there, The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands.

  144. And now, as we come to verse 19, we're going to see a lot more in these verses which follow.

  145. A lot more about this relationship between the Father and the Son.

  146. So Jesus gave them this answer, Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself.

  147. He can do only what he sees his Father doing.

  148. Because what the Father does, the Son also does.

  149. Now I want to be careful with these words.

  150. Let's listen to them again in another translation.

  151. One that's a little more word for word.

  152. The New American Standard Bible has it this way.

  153. Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of himself.

  154. Unless it is something he sees the Father doing.

  155. For whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does.

  156. In like manner or likewise.

  157. Now what does that mean?

  158. What does Jesus mean as he says this?

  159. All kinds of questions arise.

  160. What does Jesus mean when he says that the Son can do nothing of himself?

  161. Unless it's something he sees the Father doing.

  162. What does Jesus mean when he says, sees the Father doing?

  163. In what sense does he see the Father doing the things that he's doing?

  164. What does it mean that the Son likewise also does the things that the Father does?

  165. We have all kinds of questions as we come to these words.

  166. And I think the first place to go with these questions is to our knees.

  167. And just humbly acknowledge.

  168. We're talking about the mysterious relationship between the Divine Son of God and God the Father.

  169. We don't know just how all this works.

  170. How this relationship works.

  171. This is on a whole other plane of understanding, realm of existence that is so foreign to us as creatures, as human beings.

  172. And so we want to start with humility and realize that this is not something that is easy to understand.

  173. I can guarantee you that the disciples are probably scratching their heads at this moment and wondering,

  174. what does that mean, Jesus?

  175. Probably having the same questions as we do.

  176. And we know this because a little later in the story of John,

  177. one of the disciples will have a conversation with Jesus and kind of give away that he still doesn't get it,

  178. this relationship between Jesus and his Father.

  179. And Jesus will kind of explain it again and try to help him see it.

  180. And so we're not the only ones who come to these words and are wondering,

  181. what does Jesus mean by this?

  182. So we want to be careful with these words.

  183. But what can we say from these words?

  184. Well, I think at the very least we can say that Jesus seems to be saying that he,

  185. as the Divine Son of God, does not act independently from the Father.

  186. Jesus, as the Divine Son of God, does not act independently from the Father.

  187. Now, where do we get this from?

  188. Well, let's bring into focus the larger context of the conversation with the religious leaders.

  189. They're upset with him.

  190. Why?

  191. Because he has claimed that God is his own Father,

  192. and that just as his Father is not guilty for breaking the Sabbath,

  193. so he, because he is the Son of the Father,

  194. is not guilty for working on the Sabbath day.

  195. So they understand him correctly.

  196. He is claiming to be divine.

  197. And if he wasn't, Jesus could very easily just say,

  198. very truly,

  199. I say to you,

  200. I am not claiming to be equal with God.

  201. I am not claiming to be the Divine Son of God,

  202. but he doesn't say that.

  203. You can imagine what the Jewish leaders are thinking in this moment.

  204. They're thinking of perhaps some of those words from the Scriptures.

  205. Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God,

  206. the Lord is one.

  207. There is only one God,

  208. and so who are you, a man,

  209. standing in front of us,

  210. claiming to be divine with your words?

  211. There's only one God.

  212. I think there's a bit of an answer to that

  213. in what Jesus says here in verse 19.

  214. Very truly, I say to you,

  215. the Son can do nothing of himself

  216. unless it is something he sees the Father doing.

  217. I think,

  218. and this is my paraphrase and take on it,

  219. that there's a sense in which Jesus is saying,

  220. I'm not claiming to be divine in the sense that there are two gods.

  221. I'm not claiming to be another God

  222. who the Sabbath law does not apply to.

  223. No, there is one God.

  224. I, as the Son of God,

  225. am not someone who can just act independently from him.

  226. There's a connection between us and our work.

  227. Very truly, I say to you,

  228. the Son can do nothing of himself

  229. unless it is something he sees the Father doing.

  230. So there's this connection,

  231. there's this union

  232. of my work

  233. and his work.

  234. And in some sense

  235. that goes beyond our understanding,

  236. Jesus seems to be saying that

  237. he is watching what his Father is doing

  238. in any given moment,

  239. it seems as though he's saying.

  240. And unless he sees his Father doing it,

  241. he can't just go off

  242. and do it on his own,

  243. of himself.

  244. Their work,

  245. their action as Father and Son

  246. are unified.

  247. They're in harmony

  248. and synchronized with each other.

  249. And we see a little more of this

  250. in the second half of verse 19.

  251. Kind of confirmation,

  252. almost a flip side of the coin way of saying it.

  253. For whatever the Father does,

  254. these things the Son also likewise

  255. does.

  256. That's quite the claim

  257. when you think about it.

  258. I mean, the first one,

  259. okay, we can see that.

  260. You're not

  261. claiming to be a second God,

  262. one who acts independently

  263. from the one true God.

  264. No,

  265. you're kind of saying

  266. that you are

  267. in your work

  268. tethered to his.

  269. but now you're saying

  270. it's as if Jesus is saying

  271. whatever the Father might do,

  272. decide to do

  273. and do,

  274. the Son also likewise

  275. does that thing

  276. or is doing that

  277. as well.

  278. There's,

  279. again,

  280. this is,

  281. Jesus seems to be saying

  282. there's this unity

  283. unity

  284. to his action

  285. and the Father's action

  286. and perhaps the place

  287. you could just

  288. conceive of this best

  289. is in a miracle of healing.

  290. In some sense,

  291. since we don't understand,

  292. it's as if

  293. the Son is watching

  294. what the Father is doing

  295. and seeing what he is doing

  296. and as he sees

  297. the Father

  298. stretch out his hand

  299. toward a person

  300. to heal them,

  301. he too

  302. at the same time

  303. stretches out his hand

  304. to heal.

  305. The picture we get here

  306. is that there are

  307. two distinct persons

  308. at work

  309. and yet in this

  310. one action

  311. there is

  312. one God

  313. at work.

  314. Now,

  315. I'm not going to pretend

  316. to have this all

  317. figured out

  318. or to fully understand

  319. how this works,

  320. what this is like

  321. or feels like

  322. to Jesus.

  323. This

  324. is

  325. a mystery.

  326. I honestly

  327. have no idea

  328. but this seems to be

  329. what Jesus

  330. is saying

  331. here.

  332. And this is really

  333. the key truth

  334. for today

  335. that

  336. Jesus

  337. the Son of God

  338. has this

  339. wonderful,

  340. special relationship

  341. with God the Father

  342. that there is a unity

  343. to their work,

  344. to their action

  345. such that the Son

  346. does not act

  347. independently

  348. from the Father.

  349. In fact,

  350. it's even stronger

  351. than that.

  352. Cannot act.

  353. The Son

  354. can

  355. or is able

  356. to do

  357. nothing

  358. of himself

  359. unless

  360. it is something

  361. he sees

  362. the Father

  363. doing.

  364. There's a

  365. harmony,

  366. a perfect

  367. synchronization

  368. of the Father

  369. and Son

  370. as they act.

  371. Why?

  372. Well,

  373. we're going to see

  374. this a little bit

  375. today

  376. because

  377. there is

  378. a union,

  379. a deep

  380. connectedness

  381. between the

  382. Father

  383. and the Son

  384. such as

  385. is out of this

  386. world,

  387. something that

  388. we just

  389. goes beyond

  390. what we can

  391. even fathom.

  392. So,

  393. where do we

  394. see this?

  395. Well,

  396. let's look through

  397. a few other

  398. scriptures

  399. just to see

  400. this truth

  401. that we've

  402. seen here

  403. from Jesus'

  404. words affirmed

  405. again,

  406. but also

  407. some additional

  408. details

  409. that will

  410. kind of,

  411. I think,

  412. bring this

  413. into focus

  414. for us.

  415. So,

  416. the first

  417. place we

  418. want to

  419. look at

  420. is

  421. John

    John 5:30

  422. chapter 5

  423. verse 30.

  424. This is

  425. just a little

  426. ways down

  427. the end

  428. of this

  429. section.

  430. Jesus will

  431. say a very

  432. similar thing

  433. here in

  434. John 5

    John 5:30

  435. verse 30.

  436. He says

  437. this,

  438. By myself

  439. I can do

  440. nothing.

  441. I judge

  442. only as I

  443. hear,

  444. and my

  445. judgment

  446. is just,

  447. for I

  448. seek not

  449. to please

  450. myself,

  451. but him

  452. who sent

  453. me.

  454. So,

  455. again,

  456. very similar,

  457. in fact,

  458. almost identical

  459. language,

  460. of myself

  461. I can,

  462. I am able

  463. to do

  464. nothing.

  465. In his

  466. action,

  467. which is

  468. specifically

  469. related to

  470. judgment,

  471. that the

  472. Father has

  473. entrusted

  474. to him,

  475. which we'll

  476. talk about

  477. another

  478. message,

  479. in his

  480. action,

  481. he doesn't

  482. do it

  483. of himself.

  484. Why?

  485. Verse 30,

  486. For I

  487. seek not

  488. to please

  489. myself,

  490. literally,

  491. I seek

  492. not to

  493. do my

  494. will,

  495. but the

  496. will of

  497. him who

  498. sent me.

  499. So,

  500. here we

  501. see again,

  502. the son

  503. cannot act

  504. independently

  505. from the

  506. Father.

  507. Even though

  508. he has

  509. been entrusted

  510. judgment

  511. from the

  512. Father,

  513. he does

  514. not do

  515. it of

  516. himself.

  517. He does

  518. it in

  519. unison,

  520. in

  521. synchronization

  522. with the

  523. Father,

  524. what he

  525. hears from

  526. the Father.

  527. And we

  528. see another

  529. added detail

  530. here,

  531. this added

  532. detail of

  533. how the

  534. son is

  535. voluntarily

  536. submitting

  537. himself

  538. to the

  539. Father.

  540. He's not

  541. living to

  542. do his

  543. own will,

  544. but to

  545. do the

  546. will of

  547. the one

  548. who sent

  549. him,

  550. to please

  551. him.

  552. And we'll

  553. see this

  554. in more

  555. places than

  556. just this

  557. as we go

  558. on.

  559. Let's fast

  560. forward to

  561. John chapter

    John 8 chapter mention

  562. 8.

  563. John chapter

    John 8:28

  564. 8,

  565. verse 28

  566. and 29.

  567. Again,

  568. Jesus is

  569. having

  570. conversation

  571. with people

  572. and he

  573. says this,

  574. when you

  575. have lifted

  576. up the

  577. Son of

  578. Man,

  579. then you

  580. will know

  581. that I

  582. am he

  583. and that

  584. I do

  585. nothing

  586. on my

  587. own,

  588. but speak

  589. just what

  590. the Father

  591. has taught

  592. me.

  593. The one

  594. who sent

  595. me is

  596. with me.

  597. He has

  598. not left

  599. me alone,

  600. for I

  601. always do

  602. what pleases

  603. him.

  604. Here again,

  605. you see this

  606. idea again

  607. that the

  608. Son does

  609. not act

  610. independently

  611. from the

  612. Father.

  613. I do

  614. nothing on

  615. my own.

  616. In fact,

  617. he doesn't

  618. even speak

  619. independently

  620. from the

  621. Father,

  622. but I

  623. speak just

  624. what the

  625. Father has

  626. taught me.

  627. What he

  628. says to

  629. me,

  630. I say

  631. to you.

  632. There's a

  633. unity,

  634. a harmony,

  635. not just

  636. to the

  637. work that

  638. the Father

  639. and Son

  640. do,

  641. but to

  642. the words

  643. that the

  644. Son speaks.

  645. They are

  646. the words

  647. that he

  648. has received

  649. from the

  650. Father to

  651. say.

  652. And again,

  653. we see this

  654. idea of

  655. submission,

  656. voluntary

  657. submission,

  658. for I

  659. always do

  660. what pleases

  661. him.

  662. There's this

  663. commitment

  664. not to

  665. do his

  666. own will,

  667. but to

  668. do what

  669. pleases

  670. the Father,

  671. to do

  672. the will

  673. of his

  674. Father,

  675. the work

  676. of his

  677. Father,

  678. to say

  679. the words

  680. of his

  681. Father.

  682. Let's

  683. fast forward

  684. again to

  685. John

    John 12:49

  686. chapter 12

  687. verse 49.

  688. Again,

  689. Jesus

  690. referring to

  691. his previous

  692. words says

  693. this,

  694. for I

  695. did not

  696. speak on

  697. my own

  698. or of

  699. myself,

  700. but the

  701. Father who

  702. sent me

  703. commanded me

  704. to say

  705. all that

  706. I have

  707. spoken.

  708. Last

  709. half of

  710. verse 50.

  711. So,

  712. whatever I

  713. say is

  714. just what

  715. the Father

  716. has told

  717. me to

  718. say.

  719. Again,

  720. we see

  721. the Son

  722. does not

  723. act

  724. independently

  725. from the

  726. Father.

  727. He does

  728. not speak

  729. independently

  730. from the

  731. Father.

  732. They are

  733. one in

  734. their work.

  735. They are

  736. one in

  737. their

  738. words.

  739. The Son

  740. says what

  741. the Father

  742. has commanded

  743. him to

  744. say,

  745. what the

  746. Father has

  747. told him

  748. to say.

  749. And again,

  750. this idea

  751. of the

  752. Son

  753. submitting

  754. himself to

  755. the Father's

  756. commands

  757. and obeying

  758. the Father.

  759. And probably

  760. the thing

  761. that will

  762. bring this

  763. most clearly

  764. into focus

  765. is what

  766. Jesus

  767. says in

  768. John

    John 10:30

  769. chapter 10

  770. verse 30

  771. because he

  772. says it's

  773. so directly

  774. there.

  775. We're going

  776. to get

  777. there later

  778. in this

  779. series,

  780. but this

  781. is what

  782. Jesus

  783. says in

  784. John 10

  785. 30.

  786. He says,

  787. I and

  788. the Father

  789. are one.

  790. I and

  791. the Father

  792. are one.

  793. This is

  794. what is

  795. at the

  796. heart

  797. of this

  798. unity

  799. in their

  800. work

  801. and in

  802. their

  803. speaking.

  804. being.

  805. It's

  806. this

  807. deeper

  808. reality

  809. that in

  810. their

  811. very

  812. beings,

  813. being,

  814. singular,

  815. Jesus

  816. and his

  817. Father

  818. are one.

  819. Two

  820. persons,

  821. one

  822. God.

  823. Jesus

  824. will explain

  825. it like

  826. this in

  827. verse 36

  828. of chapter

  829. 10.

  830. why then

  831. do you

  832. accuse me

  833. of

  834. blasphemy

  835. because

  836. I said

  837. I am

  838. God's

  839. son.

  840. Do not

  841. believe me

  842. unless I

  843. do the

  844. works of

  845. my

  846. Father.

  847. But if

  848. I do

  849. them,

  850. even though

  851. you do

  852. not believe

  853. me,

  854. believe the

  855. works that

  856. you may

  857. know and

  858. understand

  859. that the

  860. Father is

  861. in me

  862. and I

  863. in the

  864. Father.

  865. Couldn't

  866. be said

  867. more

  868. clearly,

  869. I don't

  870. think,

  871. than this.

  872. There is

  873. a oneness,

  874. a unity,

  875. not just

  876. of their

  877. works,

  878. not just

  879. of the

  880. words,

  881. but of

  882. who they

  883. are.

  884. Father

  885. and son

  886. together,

  887. one

  888. God.

  889. So

  890. truly

  891. does

  892. the

  893. son

  894. make

  895. known

  896. who

  897. the

  898. Father

  899. is

  900. and

  901. is

  902. united

  903. with

  904. the

  905. Father

  906. that

  907. Jesus

  908. will

  909. say

  910. this

  911. in

  912. conversation

  913. with

  914. Philip.

  915. Philip

  916. will

  917. ask

  918. Jesus,

  919. he'll

  920. say,

  921. show us

  922. the

  923. Father.

  924. And this

  925. is

  926. Jesus'

  927. answer.

  928. John

  929. 14,

  930. 9,

  931. don't

  932. you

  933. know

  934. me,

  935. Philip,

  936. even

  937. after

  938. I've

  939. been

  940. among

  941. you

  942. such

  943. a

  944. long

  945. time?

  946. Anyone

  947. who

  948. has

  949. seen

  950. me

  951. has

  952. seen

  953. the

  954. Father.

  955. How can

  956. you say,

  957. show us

  958. the

  959. Father?

  960. Don't

  961. you believe

  962. that I

  963. am in

  964. the

  965. Father

  966. and that

  967. the

  968. Father

  969. is

  970. in

  971. me?

  972. Here it

  973. is again,

  974. the words

  975. I say

  976. to you,

  977. I do

  978. not speak

  979. on my

  980. own

  981. authority,

  982. me.

  983. Rather,

  984. it is

  985. the

  986. Father

  987. living

  988. in

  989. me

  990. who

  991. is

  992. doing

  993. his

  994. work.

  995. If

  996. you've

  997. seen

  998. me,

  999. says

  1000. Jesus,

  1001. you

  1002. have

  1003. seen

  1004. the

  1005. Father.

  1006. That's

  1007. how

  1008. one

  1009. they

  1010. are.

  1011. So,

  1012. yes,

  1013. we do

  1014. see

  1015. this

  1016. truth

  1017. all

  1018. through

  1019. the

  1020. Gospel

  1021. of

  1022. John,

  1023. that

  1024. Jesus

  1025. as

  1026. the

  1027. Son

  1028. of

  1029. God

  1030. has

  1031. this

  1032. wonderful

  1033. relationship

  1034. with

  1035. his

  1036. Father

  1037. in

  1038. which

  1039. they

  1040. are

  1041. two

  1042. persons

  1043. distinct

  1044. from

  1045. one

  1046. another

  1047. and

  1048. yet

  1049. one

  1050. God

  1051. acting

  1052. together,

  1053. working

  1054. together,

  1055. speaking

  1056. together

  1057. in

  1058. perfect

  1059. harmony,

  1060. in

  1061. perfect

  1062. unison

  1063. and

  1064. at the

  1065. same

  1066. time

  1067. there's

  1068. this

  1069. element

  1070. of

  1071. it's

  1072. the

  1073. Father's

  1074. will

  1075. that

  1076. governs

  1077. and

  1078. that

  1079. directs

  1080. and

  1081. he's

  1082. the

  1083. one

  1084. who

  1085. commands

  1086. and

  1087. the

  1088. son

  1089. is

  1090. the

  1091. one

  1092. who

  1093. submits

  1094. and

  1095. watches

  1096. and

  1097. acts

  1098. in

  1099. perfect

  1100. harmony

  1101. with

  1102. the

  1103. Father.

  1104. These

  1105. are lofty

  1106. truths

  1107. about

  1108. Jesus

  1109. and

  1110. the

  1111. Father.

  1112. Where

  1113. do

  1114. these

  1115. truths

  1116. hit

  1117. us

  1118. today?

  1119. Well,

  1120. they hit

  1121. us in

  1122. a couple

  1123. of

  1124. places.

  1125. And

  1126. I think,

  1127. now,

  1128. I've

  1129. said this

  1130. before in

  1131. this

  1132. series,

  1133. but I

  1134. want to

  1135. say it

  1136. again.

  1137. If

  1138. Jesus

  1139. is

  1140. just a

  1141. mere

  1142. man,

  1143. then it

  1144. matters

  1145. very little

  1146. if we

  1147. listen to

  1148. him or

  1149. take his

  1150. words

  1151. seriously.

  1152. If

  1153. Jesus

  1154. is a

  1155. prophet,

  1156. then it

  1157. matters

  1158. much

  1159. if we

  1160. listen to

  1161. him or

  1162. take his

  1163. words

  1164. seriously.

  1165. But if

  1166. Jesus

  1167. is,

  1168. as we've

  1169. seen,

  1170. the very

  1171. Son

  1172. of

  1173. God,

  1174. who

  1175. when he

  1176. speaks,

  1177. it is

  1178. God who

  1179. speaks

  1180. through

  1181. him,

  1182. then it

  1183. matters

  1184. massively

  1185. whether we

  1186. listen to

  1187. his words

  1188. or take

  1189. them

  1190. seriously.

  1191. If we

  1192. choose to

  1193. ignore the

  1194. words of

  1195. Jesus or

  1196. reject the

  1197. words of

  1198. Jesus or

  1199. disregard the

  1200. words of

  1201. Jesus,

  1202. we are

  1203. choosing to

  1204. reject and

  1205. ignore and

  1206. disregard the

  1207. words of

  1208. God, the

  1209. Father himself,

  1210. the creator

  1211. of the

  1212. universe.

  1213. And that's

  1214. not a place

  1215. that we want

  1216. to be.

  1217. But the

  1218. flip side of

  1219. this is

  1220. also true.

  1221. If Jesus

  1222. speaks the

  1223. very words of

  1224. the Father,

  1225. of God

  1226. himself,

  1227. then this

  1228. means that

  1229. it is not

  1230. just Jesus

  1231. who offers

  1232. living water

  1233. and eternal

  1234. life and

  1235. resurrection from

  1236. the dead to

  1237. people, but

  1238. it is God

  1239. himself,

  1240. the Father,

  1241. the creator,

  1242. who is offering

  1243. these good

  1244. gifts.

  1245. And if it's

  1246. God who

  1247. offers them,

  1248. we can be

  1249. certain that

  1250. he will

  1251. deliver because

  1252. only God can

  1253. do these

  1254. kinds of

  1255. things, can

  1256. give these

  1257. kinds of

  1258. gifts to

  1259. people.

  1260. Finally, we

  1261. read earlier

  1262. in John

    John 1:18

  1263. chapter 1

  1264. verse 18,

  1265. these words,

  1266. no one has

  1267. ever seen

  1268. God, but

  1269. the one and

  1270. only Son

  1271. has made

  1272. him known.

  1273. Do we

  1274. realize

  1275. just how

  1276. wonderful this

  1277. is?

  1278. That

  1279. Jesus, as

  1280. the Son of

  1281. God, has

  1282. come into

  1283. our world

  1284. so that we

  1285. could have

  1286. the gracious

  1287. opportunity to

  1288. know the

  1289. unseeable

  1290. one, the

  1291. God who

  1292. has never

  1293. been seen.

  1294. If they

  1295. have this

  1296. kind of a

  1297. oneness, like

  1298. has been

  1299. talked about

  1300. here, then

  1301. truly by

  1302. looking at

  1303. Jesus, the

  1304. one who

  1305. walked among

  1306. us, we

  1307. can know

  1308. God.

  1309. What a

  1310. wonderful

  1311. thing.

  1312. Are we

  1313. taking

  1314. advantage of

  1315. this

  1316. opportunity

  1317. and looking

  1318. at him

  1319. and listening

  1320. to his

  1321. words?

  1322. He does

  1323. not just

  1324. speak on

  1325. God's

  1326. behalf, he

  1327. speaks God's

  1328. words.

  1329. He does

  1330. God's

  1331. works.

  1332. And this

  1333. is a

  1334. wonderful and

  1335. gracious gift.

  1336. We've been

  1337. talking all

  1338. through this

  1339. series about

  1340. how Jesus

  1341. is full of

  1342. grace and

  1343. truth.

  1344. God's

  1345. grace and

  1346. truth.

  1347. He's not

  1348. gracious and

  1349. truthful in

  1350. his speech.

  1351. He is the

  1352. very embodiment

  1353. of God's

  1354. grace and

  1355. God's truth

  1356. given and

  1357. spoken to

  1358. us.

  1359. What an

  1360. amazing gift.

  1361. God's

  1362. God's

  1363. God's

  1364. God's

  1365. love and

  1366. God's

  1367. love and

  1368. God's

  1369. love and

  1370. God's

  1371. love and

  1372. spoke among

  1373. us.

  1374. I hope and

  1375. I pray that

  1376. we do.

  1377. I want to

  1378. close with

  1379. these words

  1380. of Jesus

  1381. from John

    John 5:24

  1382. chapter 5

  1383. verse 24.

  1384. This is back

  1385. in John 5

  1386. and we

  1387. didn't get to

  1388. that yet but

  1389. this is what

  1390. Jesus says.

  1391. Hear these

  1392. words.

  1393. very truly

  1394. I tell you

  1395. whoever hears

  1396. my word

  1397. and believes

  1398. him who

  1399. sent me

  1400. has eternal

  1401. life and

  1402. will not be

  1403. judged but

  1404. has crossed

  1405. over from

  1406. death to

  1407. life.

  1408. do you

  1409. hear the

  1410. word of

  1411. Jesus?

  1412. Do you

  1413. believe the

  1414. one who

  1415. sent him?

  1416. I hope and

  1417. I pray that

  1418. you do.

  1419. Let's pray.

  1420. Father in

  1421. heaven thank

  1422. you for

  1423. sending your

  1424. son.

  1425. Thank you

  1426. for the

  1427. words he

  1428. has spoken.

  1429. We pray and

  1430. ask that you

  1431. would

  1432. continue to

  1433. help us see

  1434. more of

  1435. the truth

  1436. in his

  1437. words and

  1438. understand them

  1439. better so

  1440. that we

  1441. might know

  1442. you God

  1443. deeper,

  1444. more than

  1445. we ever have

  1446. before.

  1447. We ask that

  1448. you'd seal

  1449. these words in

  1450. our hearts

  1451. in the weeks

  1452. ahead.

  1453. In Jesus

  1454. name.

  1455. Amen.

  1456. we're

  1457. going to

  1458. next

  1459. week.

  1460. in

  1461. the

  1462. bye.
