  1. Greetings to all of you who are watching or listening today.

  2. We are still in the midst of this pandemic,

  3. but I hope and I've been praying that God has been working for your good through all of this.

  4. I know many of you are eager for us to be able to come together as a church

  5. and fellowship and worship in person, but the day for that has not come yet.

  6. We are currently awaiting, at least here in Saskatchewan,

  7. for Phase 3 to start in about a week's time.

  8. And we're also waiting on the government to give some additional guidance and instruction

  9. specifically for places of worship.

  10. And I hope you know that I and the elders will be listening closely to those things that they say

  11. and prayerfully looking at how we can resume in some measure, when, how,

  12. and we'll do our best to communicate that to you.

  13. And we do look forward to the day when we can be together again in person.

  14. Until that day comes, I just want to encourage you to be patient

  15. and to continue to fix your eyes on Jesus.

  16. He's the one who will continue to lead us through all of this one day at a time.

  17. Well, we want to do that today as we open our Bibles again

  18. and listen to what God has said about His Son, Jesus.

  19. We've been working our way as a church through the Gospel of John.

  20. And we are in the middle of Jesus giving a bit of an answer.

  21. It's kind of a long answer to the religious leaders.

  22. We're in John chapter 5.

    John 5 chapter mention

  23. If you have a Bible with you, please open it up to John chapter 5 and follow along.

    John 5 chapter mention

  24. So Jesus is in Jerusalem and He has healed the man who has been unable to walk for 38 years

  25. at the pool of Bethesda.

  26. He did that on the Sabbath and the religious leaders, the Jewish leaders, came after Him.

  27. They are trying to have Him killed.

  28. This is part of the larger story of what's going on between Jesus and the religious leaders,

  29. which John and the other Gospel writers tell us about.

  30. And things get even more intense when Jesus says a certain thing to Him,

  31. which we looked at a couple weeks back, basically referring to God as His own Father.

  32. And the focus on Sabbath breaking kind of goes away.

  33. And in its place comes this focus on Jesus and His relationship with God.

  34. And Jesus gives an answer to them to explain just what His relationship is with God, His Father.

  35. And so we saw a little bit of that last Sunday about how Jesus is one with His Father.

  36. And they work together in unison, two distinct persons and one God working in any given moment

  37. with these miracles and these things that Jesus is doing.

  38. Well, today we want to see a little more of what Jesus has to say about this relationship that He has with His Father.

  39. And we pick up the story and we'll start it in verse 19, but we'll be looking at the verses which follow.

  40. John chapter 5, verse 19.

    John 5:19

  41. Jesus gave them this answer.

  42. Yes, and He will show Him even greater works than these,

  43. so that you will be amazed.

  44. For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,

  45. even so the Son gives life to whom He is pleased to give it.

  46. Moreover, the Father judges no one,

  47. but has entrusted all judgment to the Son,

  48. that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father.

  49. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.

  50. So there's a lot in here about this relationship between Jesus and His Father.

  51. And the first thing that we see, at least in the section we're looking at today,

  52. comes in verse 20.

  53. For the Father loves the Son.

  54. We've already heard John say this very thing back in John 3, verse 35.

    John 3:35

  55. The Father loves the Son.

  56. Now, John didn't say this in his gospel,

  57. but we know from the other gospels,

  58. these words have been used before about Jesus as well.

  59. At Jesus' baptism,

  60. as Jesus was coming up out of the water,

  61. we saw or we heard there that a voice came from heaven.

  62. God spoke from heaven and said,

  63. this is my beloved Son,

  64. with whom I am well pleased.

  65. And we will see the Father speak

  66. basically the same words

  67. at a later time

  68. as Jesus is transfigured

  69. in the presence of a few of His disciples.

  70. This is my beloved Son,

  71. with whom I am well pleased.

  72. The Father loves the Son.

  73. We see from all these places

  74. and these moments

  75. that the Father loves the Son.

  76. Theirs is a relationship

  77. that's not just characterized

  78. by unity and oneness.

  79. It's a relationship

  80. that is also characterized by love.

  81. One for the other.

  82. And in this case,

  83. the Father loves the Son.

  84. And here in verse 20,

  85. we see a little bit of what

  86. the Father's love for the Son

  87. leads Him to do.

  88. Or we might say

  89. the result of the Father's love.

  90. In verse 20,

  91. for the Father loves the Son

  92. and shows Him all He does.

  93. The Father loves the Son

  94. and shows Him all He does.

  95. And the emphasis in this statement

  96. is on the word all

  97. in the original language.

  98. Like everything.

  99. He loves Him

  100. and shows Him

  101. all.

  102. Everything that He does.

  103. That He is doing.

  104. Now I have to admit,

  105. this is not what I expected

  106. to read

  107. as I came to this point.

  108. For the Father loves the Son

  109. and shows Him

  110. all He does

  111. or all He is doing.

  112. What does that mean?

  113. I was expecting perhaps

  114. something more familiar.

  115. The Father loves the Son

  116. and tells Him that every day.

  117. Or the Father loves the Son

  118. and watches over Him

  119. and protects Him

  120. from all threats.

  121. Or the Father loves the Son

  122. and gives Him amazing gifts,

  123. power, authority.

  124. Something like that.

  125. This is a little unexpected,

  126. at least to me.

  127. The Father loves the Son

  128. and shows Him

  129. all He does.

  130. What does that mean?

  131. Shows Him all He does

  132. or all He is doing.

  133. I think to really get the sense of that

  134. we have to go back to

  135. kind of the counterpart to this

  136. which we saw

  137. last Sunday

  138. in verse 19.

  139. There Jesus told us

  140. that the Son

  141. can do nothing

  142. of Himself

  143. unless,

  144. He said,

  145. it is something

  146. He sees

  147. the Father doing.

  148. And what we took

  149. from that

  150. is that

  151. in some sense

  152. that we just

  153. don't understand

  154. as mere human beings,

  155. Jesus,

  156. the Divine Son of God

  157. is continuously

  158. watching His Father.

  159. He is continuously

  160. seeing

  161. what His Father

  162. is doing.

  163. And the counterpart

  164. to that

  165. that we see

  166. here

  167. is that the Father

  168. is continuously

  169. showing

  170. the Son

  171. all

  172. that He is doing.

  173. The Son

  174. sees

  175. what the Father

  176. is doing

  177. and the Father

  178. shows

  179. the Son

  180. what He is doing.

  181. There's kind of

  182. both.

  183. The Son

  184. sees,

  185. the Father shows.

  186. The Father shows,

  187. the Son sees.

  188. We get this

  189. sense of

  190. that there's a communion,

  191. there's a relationship

  192. going on here,

  193. there's an intimacy

  194. happening

  195. here.

  196. And what's so

  197. interesting

  198. to me

  199. in all of this

  200. is that

  201. the showing

  202. of the Father

  203. is the Father

  204. shows the Son

  205. all He does

  206. that seems to sprout

  207. out of His

  208. love

  209. for the Son.

  210. How is that?

  211. Why is that?

  212. I think we see here

  213. a little bit

  214. of a principle

  215. if we're looking

  216. closely

  217. that we can draw

  218. out about

  219. what love

  220. is

  221. and what love

  222. does.

  223. We might say

  224. it like this.

  225. God's kind

  226. of love

  227. or true

  228. love

  229. opens up

  230. to others.

  231. It shows

  232. oneself

  233. to others

  234. and allows

  235. them to see

  236. what's really

  237. going on

  238. with you,

  239. what you are

  240. up to,

  241. what you are

  242. doing.

  243. There's

  244. an intimacy

  245. here.

  246. He allows

  247. the Son

  248. to see,

  249. He shows

  250. the Son

  251. and the Son

  252. sees

  253. and knows

  254. just what

  255. the Father

  256. is up to.

  257. We get a little

  258. bit of confirmation

  259. of this

  260. principle

  261. of love

  262. from Jesus'

  263. words

  264. to His disciples

  265. on the night

  266. of His betrayal.

  267. John 15,

    John 15:13

  268. verse 13.

  269. Jesus is speaking

  270. to His disciples.

  271. He says,

  272. Greater love

  273. has no one

  274. than this,

  275. that a man

  276. lay down

  277. his life

  278. for his

  279. friends.

  280. And then a couple

  281. verses down

  282. in verse 15,

  283. He says,

  284. I no longer

  285. call you

  286. servants

  287. because a servant

  288. does not know

  289. his master's

  290. business.

  291. instead,

  292. I have

  293. called you

  294. friends

  295. for everything

  296. that I

  297. heard

  298. from my

  299. Father,

  300. I have

  301. made known

  302. to you.

  303. And so

  304. Jesus is

  305. talking about

  306. love and

  307. relationship

  308. again

  309. to His

  310. disciples,

  311. saying,

  312. you are

  313. my friends,

  314. I love

  315. you,

  316. and I'm

  317. about to

  318. show you

  319. just how

  320. much

  321. I love

  322. you,

  323. but laying

  324. down my

  325. life

  326. for you,

  327. the greatest

  328. demonstration

  329. of love

  330. possible.

  331. My

  332. relationship

  333. with you

  334. is not

  335. like that

  336. of a

  337. master

  338. with his

  339. servants.

  340. It's

  341. like that

  342. of a

  343. person

  344. with his

  345. friend.

  346. A

  347. master,

  348. he doesn't

  349. make his

  350. business,

  351. what he

  352. is doing,

  353. what he

  354. is up

  355. to known

  356. to his

  357. servants.

  358. They don't

  359. need to

  360. know,

  361. he makes

  362. his business,

  363. what he's

  364. up to

  365. known to

  366. his

  367. friends,

  368. whom he

  369. loves.

  370. The

  371. evidence

  372. that you

  373. are

  374. friends,

  375. that I

  376. have called

  377. you friends

  378. and not

  379. just

  380. servants,

  381. is that I

  382. have made

  383. known to

  384. you everything

  385. that I

  386. have heard

  387. from my

  388. father.

  389. So again,

  390. we see here

  391. kind of this

  392. principle that

  393. in a

  394. loving

  395. relationship,

  396. there is

  397. intimacy,

  398. there is

  399. a making

  400. known

  401. to the

  402. other,

  403. rather than

  404. keeping

  405. things from

  406. the other

  407. and hiding

  408. things from

  409. them and

  410. keeping

  411. secrets.

  412. And this

  413. is what we

  414. see in

  415. Jesus'

  416. relationship

  417. with his

  418. father,

  419. the father's

  420. relationship

  421. with the

  422. son.

  423. He shows

  424. him all

  425. he does,

  426. everything.

  427. There's an

  428. intimacy there.

  429. And I

  430. think we

  431. can draw a

  432. bit of a

  433. principle here

  434. for human

  435. level

  436. relationships

  437. as well.

  438. I mean,

  439. this is about

  440. Jesus and

  441. his father,

  442. but I

  443. think the

  444. same applies

  445. to human

  446. relationships

  447. too.

  448. We are

  449. to imitate

  450. God's

  451. love

  452. toward one

  453. another,

  454. toward other

  455. people.

  456. And so to

  457. do that,

  458. we must

  459. open ourselves

  460. up to

  461. them.

  462. We must

  463. let them

  464. see what

  465. is really

  466. going on

  467. with us,

  468. what we

  469. are up

  470. to.

  471. Now,

  472. of course,

  473. as we

  474. apply this

  475. to human

  476. relationships,

  477. there are

  478. appropriate

  479. boundaries

  480. here.

  481. It would

  482. not be

  483. right to

  484. show all

  485. things to

  486. someone who

  487. is not your

  488. husband or

  489. your wife.

  490. It would

  491. not be

  492. wise to

  493. show all

  494. things to

  495. a stranger

  496. or to

  497. an enemy.

  498. Showing

  499. all things

  500. to someone,

  501. that's

  502. something that

  503. you do in

  504. only the

  505. deepest of

  506. relationships,

  507. that you

  508. show everything.

  509. And I

  510. think that's

  511. precisely the

  512. point Jesus

  513. is making

  514. here.

  515. This is the

  516. kind of

  517. relationship

  518. I have

  519. with God

  520. the Father.

  521. He shows

  522. all things

  523. that he is

  524. doing to

  525. me.

  526. There's no

  527. secrets.

  528. Nothing is

  529. being hidden.

  530. I think we

  531. can reflect

  532. on our

  533. various

  534. relationships

  535. with this

  536. principle that

  537. love opens

  538. up to the

  539. other and

  540. lets them

  541. in.

  542. We might

  543. reflect on

  544. marriage

  545. relationships.

  546. A marriage

  547. in which

  548. one or

  549. both

  550. partners

  551. are holding

  552. each other

  553. at arm's

  554. length

  555. and keeping

  556. secrets and

  557. hiding things

  558. from each

  559. other and

  560. not opening

  561. up to each

  562. other is a

  563. marriage that

  564. is failing,

  565. that is spiraling

  566. downward.

  567. The intimacy

  568. is not there

  569. and growing.

  570. When your

  571. spouse asks

  572. you that

  573. question with

  574. longing and

  575. sincerity,

  576. how are you

  577. doing?

  578. how is

  579. your day?

  580. Don't hold

  581. up the

  582. arm and

  583. say,

  584. oh,

  585. I'm good.

  586. Make the

  587. effort.

  588. Open yourself

  589. up.

  590. Let them

  591. see what's

  592. really going

  593. on with you,

  594. what you

  595. are up

  596. to.

  597. This is

  598. the kind

  599. of love

  600. that makes

  601. for intimate

  602. relationships,

  603. not just

  604. with husband

  605. and wife

  606. relationship,

  607. but with

  608. parent and

  609. child

  610. relationship.

  611. I'm aware

  612. of this,

  613. especially as

  614. a father

  615. of three

  616. young children.

  617. My kids

  618. are always

  619. asking me

  620. the question,

  621. why?

  622. Why?

  623. Why?

  624. Sometimes,

  625. I'll be

  626. honest,

  627. it feels

  628. like a

  629. little much.

  630. I get

  631. kind of

  632. weary of

  633. hearing that

  634. question,

  635. but as

  636. I've been

  637. reflecting on

  638. this,

  639. many times

  640. underneath

  641. that is

  642. just a

  643. simple

  644. longing to

  645. know you,

  646. mom,

  647. or to

  648. know you,

  649. dad,

  650. to understand

  651. what makes

  652. you tick,

  653. why you

  654. say the

  655. things you

  656. do,

  657. why you

  658. make the

  659. decisions you

  660. do,

  661. why you

  662. responded

  663. that way

  664. to that

  665. friend that

  666. you were

  667. talking to.

  668. And it's

  669. kind of a

  670. sweet and

  671. beautiful and

  672. innocent thing.

  673. a young

  674. child just

  675. longs to

  676. know,

  677. to receive

  678. wisdom about

  679. how to

  680. navigate the

  681. world from

  682. you as a

  683. parent.

  684. And so,

  685. I'm talking

  686. to myself,

  687. I'm confessing

  688. my own sins

  689. here.

  690. When you

  691. hold up

  692. the hand

  693. and kind of

  694. keep them

  695. at arm's

  696. length and

  697. give answers

  698. like,

  699. because I

  700. said so,

  701. because you

  702. don't need

  703. to know,

  704. love opens

  705. up to

  706. the other.

  707. You could

  708. apply this

  709. to your

  710. relationships

  711. with your

  712. co-workers,

  713. with your

  714. neighbors,

  715. of course,

  716. in appropriate

  717. ways.

  718. On the

  719. flip side of

  720. things,

  721. some of

  722. you may

  723. be just

  724. anxious to

  725. open yourself

  726. up to

  727. someone,

  728. to share

  729. what's going

  730. on in your

  731. life with

  732. someone,

  733. but maybe

  734. they're not

  735. asking how

  736. you're doing.

  737. That can be

  738. a difficult

  739. place to

  740. be.

  741. But we

  742. can only go

  743. so far in

  744. answering

  745. questions that

  746. are not

  747. being asked

  748. of us.

  749. So what can

  750. we do in

  751. those situations?

  752. Well, I

  753. would encourage

  754. you just to

  755. instead focus

  756. on, not so

  757. much on getting

  758. the opportunity

  759. to share what's

  760. going on with

  761. you, with

  762. them, but

  763. focus on

  764. asking them

  765. what's going

  766. on in their

  767. life.

  768. Give them

  769. the opportunity

  770. to open up

  771. to you.

  772. Ask them

  773. questions that

  774. draw them

  775. out and

  776. go beneath

  777. the surface

  778. a little bit.

  779. Sometimes people

  780. just want to

  781. know that

  782. you care

  783. before they

  784. exchange

  785. details and

  786. information about

  787. what's really

  788. going on in

  789. their life at

  790. that level.

  791. Finally, if

  792. there's one

  793. thing on this

  794. topic of love

  795. and intimacy

  796. that really

  797. is a barrier

  798. to intimacy

  799. that really

  800. keeps us from

  801. opening up to

  802. others, it's

  803. sin in our

  804. lives.

  805. It's sinful

  806. attitudes, sinful

  807. behaviors.

  808. I know in my

  809. own life, when I

  810. am wrestling with

  811. a sinful attitude

  812. or behavior of

  813. some kind or

  814. have done

  815. something that I

  816. know is wrong,

  817. the last thing I

  818. want to do is

  819. be close to

  820. people.

  821. I kind of

  822. want to keep

  823. my arm up

  824. and keep a

  825. distance.

  826. I don't want

  827. you to see my

  828. sin up close.

  829. I found from my

  830. own personal

  831. experience that

  832. what I need to

  833. do most in

  834. that situation

  835. is not to go

  836. straight to other

  837. people and just

  838. fling wide the

  839. doors open and

  840. let them see,

  841. but it's to go

  842. to the Lord and

  843. acknowledge my

  844. sin and confess

  845. it to him,

  846. ask for his

  847. forgiveness,

  848. repent, and

  849. come to that

  850. place again where

  851. I see just how

  852. deeply he loves

  853. me, the broken

  854. sinner that I

  855. am, and how

  856. he has forgiven

  857. me and made

  858. me righteous in

  859. his sight through

  860. Jesus.

  861. It's there at

  862. the cross that I

  863. find strength and

  864. courage to open

  865. up to people and

  866. to let them see

  867. what's really going

  868. on with me.

  869. me.

  870. So those are

  871. some of the

  872. things that we

  873. can maybe pull

  874. as a bit of a

  875. principle for our

  876. human level

  877. relationships with

  878. one another from

  879. this that we see

  880. between father and

  881. son.

  882. But just think for

  883. a moment what a

  884. wonderful relationship

  885. this must be between

  886. Jesus and his

  887. father.

  888. There's no sin,

  889. there's no barriers,

  890. there's no guilt,

  891. there's no shame,

  892. there's no reason to

  893. hide one from the

  894. other.

  895. There's is a

  896. beautiful, complete,

  897. total intimacy,

  898. constant seeing,

  899. constant showing.

  900. Well, Jesus goes on

  901. from there in verse

  902. 20.

  903. He says this, the

  904. father loves the

  905. son and shows him

  906. all he does.

  907. Yes.

  908. And he will show

  909. him even greater

  910. works than these so

  911. that you will be

  912. amazed.

  913. I love these words.

  914. It's almost as if

  915. Jesus is saying,

  916. you think that the

  917. miracles that I've

  918. done up to this

  919. point are amazing?

  920. Like all these

  921. countless healings

  922. and, and casting

  923. out demons and

  924. other signs and

  925. miracles that I've

  926. done.

  927. You think those are

  928. amazing?

  929. You haven't seen

  930. anything yet.

  931. the father will

  932. show me.

  933. And as I see what

  934. he shows me and

  935. together do we do

  936. works, you will see

  937. greater things than

  938. those.

  939. And, and I love this

  940. expression things that

  941. when you see you will

  942. be amazed.

  943. Now that word amazed

  944. may seem a little

  945. flat to us.

  946. Amazed.

  947. I mean, we use that

  948. very ordinarily like

  949. that basketball shot

  950. that we saw someone

  951. make on their

  952. Facebook page.

  953. Oh, that was

  954. amazing.

  955. That's not what Jesus

  956. means here.

  957. When he says amazed

  958. the original word

  959. there, so that you

  960. will be amazed means

  961. so that you will be

  962. extraordinarily impressed

  963. impressed so that you

  964. will be astonished

  965. that so that you

  966. will marvel be, be

  967. filled with awe.

  968. So what kind of

  969. greater things or

  970. greater works is

  971. Jesus talking about?

  972. Well, what, what do

  973. you expect?

  974. How do you feel about

  975. some of the miracles

  976. that, you know, Jesus

  977. has done or will do

  978. in, in this story?

  979. I think of some of

  980. the, some of the

  981. things like Jesus

  982. walking on water,

  983. Jesus calming the

  984. storm, Jesus multiplying

  985. a couple loaves of

  986. bread and fish to

  987. feed thousands.

  988. Those things, if I'm

  989. honest, astonish me.

  990. They amaze me.

  991. But what I think is, is

  992. truly wonderful is that

  993. these, I mean, these

  994. might be kinds of

  995. things might be

  996. included in what Jesus

  997. says, but they're not

  998. the things that he

  999. gives.

  1000. They're not the

  1001. example that he

  1002. gives of greater

  1003. things.

  1004. What, what kinds of

  1005. things is Jesus

  1006. talking about?

  1007. Verse 21.

  1008. For just as the

  1009. father raises the

  1010. dead and gives

  1011. them life, even

  1012. so the son gives

1013. life to whom he is

  1014. pleased to give it.

1015. God, that is one of the

  1016. greater works that the

  1017. father will show the

1018. son and the son will

1019. do and we will be

  1020. amazed.

  1021. Only God can give

  1022. life.

  1023. And we're not talking

  1024. give life like, you

1025. know, my mother gave me

1026. life, like give birth or

  1027. reproduce.

  1028. No, we're talking

  1029. resurrection.

  1030. We're talking life from

1031. the dead for just as

  1032. the father raises the

  1033. dead and gives them

  1034. life or makes them

  1035. alive.

1036. Even so the son makes

1037. alive or gives life to

1038. whom he is pleased to

  1039. give it.

  1040. That, that unique

  1041. signature work of God's

  1042. power, giving life to

  1043. the dead.

1044. You're going to see me

  1045. do that too.

  1046. And you'll be amazed.

  1047. You'll be astonished,

  1048. says Jesus.

  1049. We're going to talk a

  1050. little bit more about

  1051. that because Jesus has

  1052. more to say.

  1053. We'll talk about that

  1054. more next Sunday.

  1055. But let's move on.

  1056. What's another example

1057. of a greater work or

  1058. greater thing that Jesus

  1059. will do?

  1060. Something that will

  1061. astonish them.

  1062. verse 22.

  1063. Moreover, the father

  1064. judges no one, says

  1065. Jesus, but has

  1066. entrusted all judgment

  1067. to the son.

  1068. What a statement.

1069. What a thing to say.

  1070. I mean, think about

  1071. this.

  1072. The Lord God,

  1073. Yahweh, we know from

  1074. the Old Testament is

  1075. the judge.

1076. He is the judge of

  1077. all the earth.

  1078. He's the one who

  1079. sees that all receive

  1080. what they are due,

  1081. whether good or bad,

  1082. reward or punishment.

  1083. That's his domain.

  1084. That's his sole

  1085. responsibility as creator

  1086. and God over everything

  1087. in the universe.

  1088. Jesus is saying.

  1089. That responsibility,

  1090. and I think he's mainly

  1091. pointing to the future,

  1092. final judgment,

  1093. that responsibility.

  1094. The father has passed

  1095. off to me.

1096. He has delegated to me.

1097. I will do it for all

  1098. people on his behalf.

  1099. I mean, can you

  1100. imagine, let's bring

1101. into focus for a moment

  1102. the religious leaders.

  1103. Can you imagine what

  1104. they're thinking as they

  1105. hear this?

  1106. You're claiming that

1107. you, we will see you

1108. give life to the dead,

1109. and that we will see you

  1110. judging all the world.

  1111. You can only imagine

1112. the reaction that they had.

  1113. They were already

  1114. bent on killing him

  1115. for calling God

  1116. his own father.

  1117. Now he's very clearly

  1118. claiming to do

  1119. the very things

  1120. that are God's

  1121. alone to do.

  1122. How dare you?

  1123. They might be thinking.

  1124. Notice in verse

  1125. 23, why the father

  1126. has entrusted all

  1127. judgment to the son.

  1128. Verse 23, the father

  1129. has entrusted all

  1130. judgment to the son

  1131. that all may honor

1132. the son just as they

  1133. honor the father.

  1134. So the father desires

1135. the son to be honored,

  1136. to be esteemed,

  1137. to be glorified,

  1138. just as he himself

  1139. is honored and esteemed

  1140. and glorified.

  1141. Again, the religious

  1142. leaders are probably

  1143. thinking,

  1144. how dare you say

  1145. such a thing?

  1146. Have you not read

  1147. what Isaiah the prophet

  1148. said?

  1149. Isaiah 42, 8,

  1150. I am the Lord.

  1151. That is my name.

1152. I will not yield my glory

  1153. to another.

  1154. How dare you claim

  1155. that God desires

  1156. to see you receive

  1157. the glory

  1158. that he himself

  1159. receives.

  1160. the religious leaders.

  1161. And Jesus will explain

  1162. this.

1163. We heard this last Sunday.

  1164. He will explain how

  1165. this works.

1166. He's not claiming to be

1167. another God or a second

  1168. God, a rival God.

  1169. in Jesus' own words,

  1170. John 14, 10,

1171. I am in the father

  1172. and the father

  1173. is in me.

  1174. John 10, verse 30,

    John 10:30

  1175. I and the father

  1176. are one.

  1177. There is only

  1178. one God

  1179. and within

  1180. his being,

  1181. there is father,

  1182. there is son,

  1183. there is Holy Spirit

  1184. and there is love

  1185. between the persons

  1186. of this

  1187. one God.

  1188. There is honoring

  1189. and glorifying

  1190. of each other

  1191. going on in there.

  1192. There's relationship.

  1193. The religious leaders

  1194. refuse to believe that.

  1195. The final statement

  1196. that Jesus makes

  1197. in this section

  1198. comes in verse 23.

  1199. Whoever does not

  1200. honor the son

  1201. does not honor

  1202. the father

  1203. who sent him.

  1204. And again,

  1205. in these words,

  1206. we see this,

  1207. this connection

  1208. between the father

  1209. and the son.

  1210. We see,

  1211. we see this

  1212. oneness.

  1213. The way that you

  1214. treat the son

  1215. reflects on your

  1216. treatment of the

  1217. father himself.

  1218. Whoever does not

  1219. honor me

  1220. does not honor

  1221. the father

  1222. who sent me.

  1223. if you spit

  1224. in my face,

  1225. it's as though

  1226. you are spitting

  1227. in the face

  1228. of God himself.

  1229. He has sent me.

  1230. We see both

  1231. oneness

  1232. and we see

  1233. this idea

  1234. that the son

  1235. represents

  1236. the father.

  1237. He has come

  1238. from the father

  1239. on his behalf

  1240. and probably

  1241. the best

  1242. illustration,

  1243. the place that

  1244. we see this

  1245. most clearly

  1246. is in the

  1247. parable of the

  1248. tenants,

  1249. which Jesus

  1250. tells.

  1251. This is found

  1252. in Mark

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  1253. chapter 12.

  1254. Jesus tells

  1255. a story of

  1256. a man who

  1257. built a vineyard

  1258. and then rented

  1259. it out to

  1260. some farmers

  1261. and then went

  1262. off to a

  1263. distant land.

  1264. And at harvest

  1265. time,

  1266. he sent servants

  1267. to collect

  1268. some of the

  1269. fruit that was

  1270. produced in the

  1271. vineyard.

  1272. And the tenants

  1273. treated the

  1274. servants

  1275. shamefully.

  1276. they beat

  1277. some of them

  1278. and others

  1279. they killed.

  1280. Finally,

  1281. it comes down

  1282. to that there

  1283. are no more

  1284. servants left

  1285. to send.

  1286. And the last

  1287. thing I'll do,

  1288. I'll send my

  1289. son.

  1290. Perhaps they

  1291. will respect

  1292. him.

  1293. And so he

  1294. sends his

  1295. son and they

  1296. see him coming

  1297. from afar and

  1298. they plot to

  1299. kill him.

  1300. Now there's

  1301. lots that we

  1302. could take from

  1303. that parable,

  1304. but we don't

  1305. have time for

  1306. that today.

  1307. The main

  1308. point that

  1309. we're looking

  1310. at is just

  1311. to see how

  1312. their treatment

  1313. of the son

  1314. is, if they

  1315. treat the son

  1316. shamefully,

  1317. they treat the

  1318. father who sent

  1319. him shamefully.

  1320. To spit in the

  1321. face of the son

  1322. is to spit in

  1323. the face of the

  1324. father.

  1325. Because of the

  1326. close relationship

  1327. between father

  1328. and son,

  1329. whatever they

  1330. do to the

  1331. son, to

  1332. harm him,

  1333. to shame

  1334. him,

  1335. to insult

  1336. him, the

  1337. father takes

  1338. personally.

  1339. For he has

  1340. sent the son

  1341. to collect.

  1342. It's the same

  1343. in this case

  1344. with Jesus

  1345. and his

  1346. father.

  1347. Whoever does

  1348. not honor the

  1349. son does not

  1350. honor the father

  1351. who sent him.

  1352. If we

  1353. dishonor

  1354. Jesus,

  1355. we dishonor

  1356. God the

  1357. father.

  1358. This is the

  1359. relationship

  1360. that we see

  1361. between

  1362. father and

  1363. son.

  1364. Well, there's a

  1365. lot of wonderful

  1366. truth that we

  1367. see in all of

  1368. this about

  1369. Jesus'

  1370. relationship with

  1371. his father.

  1372. We see how

  1373. the father

  1374. loves the

  1375. son.

  1376. We see how

  1377. he shows

  1378. him everything

  1379. he does.

  1380. we see how

  1381. he will show

  1382. him even

  1383. greater works

  1384. than the

  1385. ones he's

  1386. already done.

  1387. How it

  1388. has been

  1389. given to

  1390. him to

  1391. judge

  1392. all people

  1393. in the

  1394. final count.

  1395. And that

  1396. because the

  1397. father loves

  1398. the son and

  1399. desires to

  1400. see him

  1401. glorified and

  1402. honored.

  1403. well, what

  1404. should our

  1405. response to

  1406. all of this

  1407. wonderful truth

  1408. be?

  1409. Aside from

  1410. awe and

  1411. reverence and

  1412. wonder at

  1413. this special

  1414. relationship

  1415. between God

  1416. the father and

  1417. the divine

  1418. son of God,

  1419. if we're

  1420. listening carefully

  1421. to Jesus,

  1422. the only fitting

  1423. response comes

  1424. in verse 23,

  1425. that we honor

  1426. the son,

  1427. the one who

  1428. has been sent

  1429. from the

  1430. father, that

  1431. we honor him.

  1432. That's what

  1433. this is all

  1434. about.

  1435. Do we honor

  1436. the one he

  1437. has sent?

  1438. Now, what

  1439. does it mean

  1440. to honor the

  1441. son, to

  1442. honor Jesus?

  1443. Well, I

  1444. hesitate to

  1445. just give an

  1446. answer to

  1447. that.

  1448. I think this

  1449. is something

  1450. that we all

  1451. should really

  1452. think deeply

  1453. about.

  1454. What does it

  1455. mean?

  1456. What does it

  1457. look like for

  1458. me to honor

  1459. Jesus, the

  1460. son of God?

  1461. It means more

  1462. than to just

  1463. give him lip

  1464. service.

  1465. It means more

  1466. than to give

  1467. him token

  1468. worship, token

  1469. obedience.

  1470. obedience.

  1471. It means more

  1472. than to like

  1473. his metaphorical

  1474. Facebook page

  1475. and say,

  1476. I'm for

  1477. Jesus.

  1478. I agree with

  1479. him.

  1480. It means more

  1481. than just

  1482. kind of liking

  1483. him.

  1484. At a very

  1485. minimum, it

  1486. means that we

  1487. acknowledge just

  1488. who he is.

  1489. at the very

  1490. minimum, it

  1491. means that we

  1492. welcome him

  1493. with open

  1494. arms.

  1495. To honor

  1496. him means

  1497. that we

  1498. take the

  1499. words that

  1500. he says

  1501. very

  1502. seriously.

  1503. That we

  1504. obey the

  1505. commands which

  1506. he has given

  1507. for he

  1508. speaks the

  1509. words and

  1510. gives the

  1511. commands of

  1512. God the

  1513. father.

  1514. that's the

  1515. bare minimum

  1516. of what

  1517. honoring the

  1518. son means.

  1519. It means that

  1520. we believe

  1521. him.

  1522. We accept

  1523. him.

  1524. We obey

  1525. him.

  1526. But I

  1527. want us to

  1528. think way

  1529. beyond that.

  1530. When it

  1531. comes to

  1532. honoring

  1533. someone,

  1534. one of the

  1535. questions I

  1536. think that we

  1537. should ask

  1538. is just who

  1539. is this

  1540. person?

  1541. And what

  1542. are they

  1543. worthy of?

  1544. What kind

  1545. of honor

  1546. are they

  1547. due?

  1548. We could

  1549. think of

  1550. this from

  1551. a human

  1552. relationships

  1553. perspective.

  1554. I mean,

  1555. if it's

  1556. just Joe

  1557. from down

  1558. the street

  1559. coming over

  1560. for the

  1561. fourth time

  1562. this week,

  1563. a co-op

  1564. pizza,

  1565. a big

  1566. slab,

  1567. is good

  1568. enough.

  1569. But if

  1570. it's a

  1571. dear friend

  1572. who we

  1573. haven't seen

  1574. in a long

  1575. time who

  1576. is traveling

  1577. all the

  1578. way,

  1579. halfway

  1580. across

  1581. Canada

  1582. just to

  1583. be with

  1584. us,

  1585. we honor

  1586. that person

  1587. by killing

  1588. the fattened

  1589. calf and

  1590. throwing a

  1591. feast that

  1592. costs us

  1593. a great

  1594. deal.

  1595. If we're

  1596. thinking of

  1597. honoring someone

  1598. very special,

  1599. someone who

  1600. we would

  1601. like to spend

  1602. the rest of

  1603. our life

  1604. with,

  1605. it could be

  1606. very costly.

  1607. We won't

  1608. just give

  1609. them a

  1610. little trinket

  1611. to demonstrate

  1612. our commitment

  1613. and love to

  1614. them.

  1615. No,

  1616. we will

  1617. spend

  1618. months of

  1619. our savings

  1620. to give

  1621. them a

  1622. symbol of

  1623. our love,

  1624. an engagement

  1625. ring that

  1626. communicates

  1627. the honor

  1628. that we

  1629. have for

  1630. them,

  1631. the love

  1632. that we

  1633. have for

  1634. them.

  1635. I know

  1636. of a

  1637. mother and

  1638. daughter back

  1639. in Edmonton

  1640. in the church

  1641. I used to

  1642. go to.

  1643. That young

  1644. gal honored

  1645. her mother

  1646. whose,

  1647. I think it

  1648. was kidney,

  1649. both kidneys

  1650. had failed.

  1651. She honored

  1652. her mother

  1653. with the

  1654. costly gift

  1655. of giving

  1656. her mother

  1657. one of

  1658. her own.

  1659. that's how

  1660. dear and

  1661. precious she

  1662. was.

  1663. And so this

  1664. question of

  1665. just who

  1666. is it that

  1667. we are

  1668. honoring and

  1669. how worthy

  1670. are they?

  1671. What are they

  1672. worthy of?

  1673. Is so

  1674. important.

  1675. Now think

  1676. of that,

  1677. not with

  1678. human level

  1679. relationships,

  1680. but with

  1681. Jesus,

  1682. the divine

  1683. son of

  1684. God.

  1685. We've

  1686. already seen

  1687. so many

  1688. wonderful

  1689. things about

  1690. who he

  1691. is.

  1692. He's the

  1693. lamb of

  1694. God who

  1695. takes away

  1696. the sins

  1697. of the

  1698. world.

  1699. He's the

  1700. Messiah,

  1701. God's

  1702. appointed

  1703. king.

  1704. He's the

  1705. one

  1706. whom God

  1707. has entrusted

  1708. all judgment

  1709. to.

  1710. He himself

  1711. is one

  1712. with the

  1713. father.

  1714. Through him

  1715. all things

  1716. were created

  1717. that have

  1718. been made.

  1719. He is

  1720. God.

  1721. How worthy

  1722. is he?

  1723. He is

  1724. worthy of

  1725. all blessing,

  1726. all honor,

  1727. all glory

  1728. that we

  1729. could possibly

  1730. give.

  1731. all of

  1732. everything

  1733. that we

  1734. have.

  1735. All of

  1736. us,

  1737. all of

  1738. our love,

  1739. all of

  1740. our

  1741. attention,

  1742. all of

  1743. our

  1744. devotion,

  1745. all of

  1746. our

  1747. strength

  1748. and

  1749. effort.

  1750. He's

  1751. worthy

  1752. not just

  1753. of those

  1754. things this

  1755. next week

  1756. or this

  1757. next month,

  1758. but of

  1759. those things

  1760. for the

  1761. rest of

  1762. our lives

  1763. forever.

  1764. forever.

  1765. That's

  1766. who Jesus

  1767. the son

  1768. is.

  1769. We barely

  1770. scratched the

  1771. tip of

  1772. the surface

  1773. of who

  1774. he is

  1775. in our

  1776. time in

  1777. John

  1778. here.

  1779. How will

  1780. you

  1781. honor

  1782. Jesus,

  1783. the son

  1784. of God,

  1785. not just

  1786. with this

  1787. week,

  1788. not just

  1789. with today,

  1790. but with

  1791. your life,

  1792. with what

  1793. God has

  1794. given you

  1795. to honor

  1796. him with.

  1797. I think

  1798. is the

  1799. question that

  1800. we all

  1801. need to

  1802. ask.

  1803. In

  1804. fact,

  1805. God

  1806. himself

  1807. tells us

  1808. just how

  1809. worthy

  1810. his son

  1811. is.

  1812. We get

  1813. a glimpse

  1814. of the

  1815. end of

  1816. the story

  1817. in

  1818. Revelation.

  1819. These

  1820. are the

  1821. kinds of

  1822. words that

  1823. the angels

  1824. say and

  1825. that someday

  1826. all creatures

  1827. and especially

  1828. those who

  1829. belong to

  1830. Jesus will

  1831. join in

  1832. proclaiming

  1833. and in

  1834. saying.

  1835. Revelation 5

    Revelation 5:12

  1836. verse 12

  1837. worthy is

  1838. the lamb

  1839. who was

  1840. slain to

  1841. receive power

  1842. and wealth

  1843. and wisdom

  1844. and strength

  1845. and honor

  1846. and glory

  1847. and praise.

  1848. And there

  1849. are many

  1850. exclamations

  1851. like this

  1852. in Revelation

  1853. which have

  1854. some other

  1855. things added

  1856. in and

  1857. these things

  1858. not just

  1859. for a period

  1860. of time

  1861. but forever.

  1862. that's how

  1863. worthy

  1864. he is.

  1865. How

  1866. will you

  1867. honor the

  1868. son

  1869. with your

  1870. life

  1871. with what

  1872. God has

  1873. given you

  1874. to honor

  1875. him with?

  1876. Let's pray.

  1877. Father in

  1878. heaven

  1879. thank you

  1880. that you

  1881. have sent

  1882. your

  1883. one and

  1884. only

  1885. precious

  1886. beloved

  1887. son

  1888. into our

  1889. world

  1890. and that

  1891. is a gift

  1892. of grace

  1893. and mercy

  1894. he has

  1895. laid down

  1896. his life

  1897. for us

  1898. that we

  1899. might be

  1900. saved

  1901. from what

  1902. we truly

  1903. deserve

  1904. for the

  1905. wrongs that

  1906. we have

  1907. done against

  1908. you.

  1909. That in

  1910. itself is

  1911. the greatest

  1912. gift

  1913. of all.

  1914. we love

  1915. your

  1916. son.

  1917. We

  1918. worship

  1919. him.

  1920. We give

  1921. him glory

  1922. and honor

  1923. and praise

  1924. and we

  1925. ask that

  1926. you would

  1927. lead us

  1928. in doing

  1929. that for

  1930. the rest

  1931. of our

  1932. lives

  1933. from now

  1934. on

  1935. until

  1936. forever

  1937. in his

  1938. name.

  1939. Amen.
