  1. Last Sunday was our first service together in three months of not having anything in person together.

  2. And it was a great time. We sure enjoyed being together.

  3. And we looked at a place in God's Word where, long ago, services were disrupted.

  4. And then, after a period of time, resumed again.

  5. And we looked at that day when King David led the people of Israel to begin services again at the tent that David set up in Jerusalem.

  6. It was a joyful day. It was just a wonderful time.

  7. David encouraged the people to get the instruments out.

  8. He got the worship team together.

  9. And he shared one of his own songs that day as an example of the kind of praise and song that they were to offer to the Lord.

  10. And we saw last Sunday that the kind of worship that God desires is worship that comes from the heart.

  11. We saw, in David's words, that God is worthy of our praise.

  12. He deserves it. It's fitting for him to receive that from us.

  13. And we looked at a whole bunch of reasons that David put into that song of why God is worthy.

  14. Of us coming together and worshiping him Sunday after Sunday.

  15. Well, today we want to add another reason to that list.

  16. A reason for why God is worthy of our worship and our praise.

  17. And we find that reason in Revelation chapter 4.

    Revelation 4 chapter mention

  18. Revelation is a unique part of the scriptures.

  19. It has some of the characteristics of a letter that's been written to a number of churches.

  20. But it also has characteristics of a vision which God gave to the Apostle John.

  21. And not just any vision, but a prophetic vision.

  22. A vision in which things of the future are revealed.

  23. And so, up until this point in the book of Revelation,

  24. John is on the island of Patmos where he has been exiled because of his preaching the word of God

  25. and because of his giving testimony about Jesus.

  26. And it's here on the island of Patmos that God gave him an amazing vision.

  27. The Lord Jesus himself was who John saw revealed to him that day.

  28. And he saw the Lord Jesus not just in ordinary human form, but in his glorious appearance.

  29. And the Lord Jesus commanded him to write words down, letters to give to various churches.

  30. And it's just following this that we pick up the story of this vision that John is experiencing in chapter 4.

  31. After this, I looked, and there before me, says John, was a door standing open in heaven.

  32. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said,

  33. Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.

  34. At once, I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven.

  35. With someone sitting on it.

  36. And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby.

  37. A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne.

  38. Surrounding the throne were 24 other thrones.

  39. And seated on them were 24 elders.

  40. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads.

  41. From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings, and peals of thunder.

  42. In front of the throne, seven lamps were blazing.

  43. These are the seven spirits of God.

  44. Also, in front of the throne, there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal.

  45. In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures.

  46. And they were covered with eyes, in front and in back.

  47. The first living creature was like a lion.

  48. The second was like an ox.

  49. The third had a face like a man.

  50. The fourth was like a flying eagle.

  51. Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around,

  52. even under its wings.

  53. Day and night, they never stopped saying,

  54. Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,

  55. who was and is and is to come.

  56. Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor, and thanks to him who sits on the throne

  57. and who lives forever and ever,

  58. the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne

  59. and worship him who lives forever and ever.

  60. They lay their crowns before the throne and say,

  61. You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power

  62. for you created all things,

  63. and by your will they were created and have their being.

  64. Well, this is a very strange vision.

  65. There are a lot of interesting details in it.

  66. Lots of things that, if we're honest,

  67. we have no idea what John is talking about.

  68. But let's look at a few of the details that we see here in this vision.

  69. The first thing that we want to notice is that this is a vision of heaven.

  70. This is one artist's rendition of this vision.

  71. John says,

  72. There before me I saw a door standing open in heaven,

  73. and a voice invites him, the voice who spoke to him earlier,

  74. the voice of Jesus, to come up here and see some things,

  75. and in some mysterious way that's beyond our understanding,

  76. John was in the spirit, in this vision,

  77. and it's as though he was taken up through this door into heaven,

  78. where he got a glimpse of some very strange things,

  79. some very amazing things.

  80. John describes the first thing that he saw as a throne there in heaven,

  81. and someone sitting on the throne.

  82. He describes the appearance of this one sitting on the throne,

  83. and his description is like no person that we have ever seen.

  84. In fact, we almost get the sense that even John is reaching for words to describe this one.

  85. Verse 3,

  86. The one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby.

  87. Perhaps John means to describe something of the way that he's beautiful,

  88. he's glorious, he's reflective.

  89. There's a bit of color there.

  90. He goes on to describe 24 thrones that are seated around this one throne.

  91. Here's another artist's rendition of it.

  92. And an emerald rainbow, you can kind of see it around the throne.

  93. Flashes of lightning coming from the throne.

  94. Rumblings and peals of thunder.

  95. You can see there on the picture, seven lamps blazing in front of it,

  96. and the four living creatures.

  97. A very strange and mysterious vision indeed.

  98. And when we read this, I mean, we have all kinds of questions, I'm sure.

  99. Like, why did God give a vision like this to John?

  100. Is this actually what heaven looks like?

  101. Or is this just a vision that kind of reveals truth or reality of what happens in the spiritual realm?

  102. Is it symbolic?

  103. What are the seven spirits of God?

  104. What kind of creatures are these with six wings and eyes all over their bodies?

  105. And who are these 24 elders, these kings who sit on these thrones and have golden crowns?

  106. Well, I have a short answer and a longer answer.

  107. And my short answer is I have no idea what all of these things refer to.

  108. The slightly longer answer is that God doesn't waste his breath in anything he says or reveals.

  109. And so I trust that there is some important meaning and purpose for revealing just what he did to John that day.

  110. But sometimes God gives us more of a glimpse than an opportunity to gaze and fully understand.

  111. And I think that's what's happening here.

  112. Who are these four creatures?

  113. What are they?

  114. Are they real?

  115. Or are they symbolic?

  116. I think we're wise not to make too much of them.

  117. Or presume in pride to know just what they are.

  118. But I think it's also wise not to make too little of them.

  119. They show up 11 times in this vision, this story which God has given.

  120. And we can speculate.

  121. We can guess.

  122. We can look at all the details of the crowns and the clothing that they wear and the types of creatures that they are.

  123. But I think it's safe to just admit that we don't know just what this is all about.

  124. It appears as though God is just giving us a glimpse into something that is beyond us.

  125. He does that sometimes.

  126. Sometimes he does it in order to reveal something but also conceal something for a later time in which we will know more fully.

  127. So what can we take from this very strange vision?

  128. And really this is just a piece of the whole thing.

  129. Well I think that we can start by concluding that wherever God rules from in the heavenly realms, it's glorious.

  130. It's beautiful.

  131. Not only that but he, the one who sits on heaven's throne, is glorious and beautiful.

  132. He is someone who is to be feared.

  133. John describes flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder coming from the throne.

  134. Can you imagine how John would have felt in the midst of that, witnessing that?

  135. Just a couple weeks back we had some storms come through Davidson.

  136. And I still remember seeing the living room window just lighting up with flashes of lightning.

  137. And hearing the booms of thunder.

  138. And we just had to pause what we were doing and just kind of stand in awe and listen like,

  139. Wow, this is powerful.

  140. Even little Caleb, his attention was captured.

  141. And he had to come over to the window and talk about the booms that he was hearing.

  142. Can you imagine how John would have felt in this vision?

  143. To see and hear that coming out of this glorious throne in heaven.

  144. The Lord is glorious.

  145. He is beautiful.

  146. He is someone to be feared.

  147. And all of this vision, in some ways, really points to the truth that he is holy.

  148. That he is other.

  149. He is above.

  150. He is beyond.

  151. He is distinct from us.

  152. Superior.

  153. Here he is.

  154. And he is being worshipped day and night by creatures the likes of which we have never seen in our world.

  155. They are declaring this truth.

  156. That he is holy.

  157. Holy.

  158. Holy.

  159. The repetition of that word signals that it's not just a little bit of holy.

  160. It's a lot of holy.

  161. So far above us.

  162. And all other beings.

  163. Holy.

  164. Holy.

  165. Holy.

  166. Holy is the Lord.

  167. God.

  168. Almighty.

  169. Holy.

  170. The story goes on.

  171. John sees these living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to the one who sits on the throne.

  172. And we just get the sense that we, through John's eyes, are seeing a worship moment.

  173. A moment in which God is receiving worship.

  174. And it goes on from here.

  175. The 24 elders, John tells us, they, when they see the creatures giving praise to God, they fall down before this one seated on the throne.

  176. They lay their crowns before him and they worship him.

  177. Just think of that for a second.

  178. You, as a human being here on earth, what would it take to get you to bow down before another person here on earth?

  179. I mean, we can hardly even imagine a situation where we would do that.

  180. It would have to be the greatest of rulers, a powerful man, a person worthy of great respect, a person who is truly worthy to get us to bow down before him.

  181. Now, flip that around and imagine that you are such a king.

  182. And you have a kingdom and you have a crown of gold on your head that represents your rule and reign over your kingdom.

  183. What would it take to get you to fall down on your face before someone else?

  184. And to take the crown, the symbol of your authority and power and rule, and lay it at the feet of another.

  185. You would only do that before the greatest of kings that this world has ever known.

  186. This is the kind of moment that we see happening here through John's eyes in his vision.

  187. Not only do they bring, do they take up the posture of worship and fall down before the one on the throne and lay before him their crowns, but they speak words of worship.

  188. Verse 11, you are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power.

  189. Just think about those words for a moment.

  190. Worthy.

  191. It is fitting.

  192. It is right that you receive glory, worship.

  193. It's what you are due.

  194. Why?

  195. They give one reason.

  196. Also in verse 11,

  197. For you created all things,

  198. and by your will they were created and have their being.

  199. This is an awesome statement.

  200. And it's worth taking a time to just slow down and ponder it.

  201. For you created, you made everything.

  202. And it exists and continues to exist because of your purpose and intention, your will.

  203. You are worthy for doing that.

  204. You are worthy for doing that.

  205. I love that little phrase.

  206. Created all things.

  207. That's a big little phrase.

  208. All things means a lot.

  209. Let's consider for a moment what is included in all things.

  210. It includes the things of heaven.

  211. It includes the things of earth.

  212. It includes the physical.

  213. It includes the spiritual.

  214. It includes the really big things like clusters of galaxies.

  215. It includes the really little things like protons, neutrons, and electrons.

  216. It includes the laws which govern our world like gravity, thermodynamics, the laws of motion and physics.

  217. It includes the systems which we see happening all over.

  218. The rain cycle.

  219. The tide.

  220. The ebb and flow of the tide.

  221. The way the moon affects those things.

  222. All of it.

  223. All things includes that liquid we call water

  224. in which there are countless different kinds of living creatures.

  225. Swimming.

  226. Living.

  227. It includes the sky and all the flyers which navigate the currents of wind

  228. that we can hardly even imagine.

  229. It includes all plants and trees.

  230. It includes light.

  231. It includes sound.

  232. Everything.

  233. All things.

  234. You are worthy, our Lord and God,

  235. for you created all things.

  236. Everything.

  237. What a statement.

  238. Let's think a little more about some of these things

  239. and just how they show the worthiness of God.

  240. Plants.

  241. Such an amazing thing.

  242. There are so many different kinds all over earth

  243. and they all grow and look a little different

  244. and have so much variation and color,

  245. different conditions in which they thrive.

  246. You look up close, even at the back of a leaf,

  247. and look at the detail,

  248. the complexity of what's going on there.

  249. I've got a massive poplar in my backyard

  250. and it just floors me

  251. that that whole tree grew out of a seed this big.

  252. It's amazing.

  253. Those of you who farm,

  254. that tiny little canola seed,

  255. isn't it amazing that the whole canola plant

  256. is packed into that?

  257. You can store it.

  258. You can activate it whenever you want

  259. just by putting it in the ground

  260. and putting some water on it.

  261. It's amazing.

  262. Those of you who are doing some gardening,

  263. maybe you've got some of these

  264. that you're hoping to see in your garden

  265. later this season.

  266. Isn't it amazing that out of a tiny little tomato seed,

  267. you can get a whole plant full of these

  268. ripe, beautiful, red, juicy tomatoes.

  269. God created all things.

  270. Here's an example of something that we've created.

  271. Let's talk about machines.

  272. Some of you fix machines.

  273. Some of you drive machines.

  274. Here's a machine that's been made by man,

  275. a combine, and it's pretty impressive.

  276. It can do some pretty amazing things.

  277. It's got lots of processes,

  278. lots of mechanisms,

  279. lots of systems.

  280. It's got GPS.

  281. I don't know if that model does or not,

  282. but probably not.

  283. It looks like an older one.

  284. But what's amazing to me

  285. is that all throughout our world,

  286. we see that God has created

  287. all kinds of machines,

  288. living machines,

  289. with all kinds of parts

  290. and programming

  291. that function in all kinds of ways

  292. that blow this out of the water,

  293. that make this look primitive.

  294. I mean, think for a moment of this.

  295. A dolphin.

  296. It's got one of the most amazing systems

  297. on the planet

  298. for sonar,

  299. echolocation.

  300. I just have to tell you

  301. a little bit about it.

  302. Apparently, this thing is able to

  303. create clicks

  304. of all different kinds

  305. and project them out into the water

  306. through an acoustic lens

  307. in its forehead.

  308. It can bounce those sound waves

  309. off a fish

  310. up to 200 meters away,

  311. get the waves back

  312. through its jawbones,

  313. and interpret that information

  314. into a 3D image.

  315. Like, that's astounding.

  316. And what will blow our minds

  317. even more is that

  318. it's so fine-tuned

  319. and it works so effortlessly,

  320. so naturally.

  321. It's part of the programming

  322. and wiring

  323. that it can do this

  324. to objects far and near,

  325. back and forth so quickly.

  326. It can see a whole swarm of fish

  327. just going like this

  328. and zero in on a single fish

  329. with those waves

  330. and just zip right in there

  331. and grab it.

  332. Not by sight,

  333. but by this crazy sonar system

  334. that's wired into its head.

  335. God created that.

  336. It blows our minds.

  337. It's amazing.

  338. Here's another example

  339. of something amazing.

  340. Birds.

  341. What a creature.

  342. A creature which can go

  343. from standing still

  344. and just start flapping

  345. and climb right up

  346. into thin air

  347. and just hover

  348. through the air.

  349. We've done the best we can

  350. to replicate flight.

  351. We've made our machines,

  352. but they look big

  353. and clunky

  354. and they're primitive

  355. compared to this.

  356. I mean,

  357. you think of what a bird

  358. can do.

  359. The engineering,

  360. the design.

  361. Birds are as common

  362. as anything.

  363. I mean,

  364. we see them all the time

  365. and yet

  366. the acrobatics

  367. that they can do

  368. in the air.

  369. They can snatch

  370. an insect

  371. out of the air

  372. in mid-flight.

  373. It's amazing.

  374. A bird like this

  375. can zero in

  376. on a fish

  377. down in the water

  378. and dive

  379. and grab that fish

  380. right out of the water.

  381. And all of that's

  382. wired into this

  383. little package.

  384. All the programming

  385. is there.

  386. The mechanisms

  387. are there.

  388. It has just

  389. the right parts.

  390. It's amazing.

  391. Another example

  392. of the

  393. awesome creativity

  394. of God.

  395. While we're on

  396. the subject of birds,

  397. I just had to put

  398. one of these in there,

  399. a hummingbird.

  400. What an amazing creation.

  401. This thing can fly

  402. up to 50 kilometers

  403. an hour

  404. and then

  405. in an instant

  406. stop

  407. mid-air

  408. and just hover.

  409. And then

  410. if it wants to,

  411. it can fly backwards.

  412. This particular

  413. kind of hummingbird

  414. can do

  415. in-flight fueling.

  416. Come right up

  417. to the flower,

  418. hover.

  419. Think of the

  420. precision on that.

  421. Its beak

  422. is like

  423. a tiny needle.

  424. It can suck

  425. the nectar

  426. right out of a flower.

  427. In-flight fueling.

  428. Give SpaceX

  429. a run for its money.

  430. Another amazing

  431. creation of God.

  432. And all of that

  433. packed into this

  434. tiny little body.

  435. It blows our minds.

  436. How can it sustain

  437. that kind of

  438. muscle activity,

  439. that kind of

  440. energy requirement?

  441. the fuel that it would

  442. need,

  443. the energy output

  444. of this thing

  445. is amazing

  446. and it's all

  447. in this tiny

  448. little thing.

  449. The best of drones

  450. that we have engineered

  451. doesn't even

  452. come close to this.

  453. You get maxed

  454. 10 minutes of flight

  455. before the

  456. battery's dead.

  457. Or consider

  458. the caterpillar.

  459. Another thing

  460. that God has created.

  461. I love these.

  462. They give,

  463. they baffle the minds

  464. of scientists

  465. over and over

  466. and over again.

  467. It's the only creature

  468. in our world

  469. that we know of

  470. that forms a chrysalis,

  471. turns all of itself

  472. into a chemical soup.

  473. all of its organs

  474. gone

  475. into chemicals

  476. and then re-emerges

  477. as a totally

  478. different creature.

  479. A thing that

  480. eats differently,

  481. a thing that

  482. moves differently,

  483. flies differently.

  484. It's nothing like

  485. what it was

  486. when it went in.

  487. It baffles

  488. the minds

  489. of the best

  490. of human biologists.

  491. How could something

  492. do that

  493. in just two weeks' time?

  494. It's amazing.

  495. And we're just

  496. getting started here.

  497. The whole world

  498. is full of all kinds

  499. of stuff like this.

  500. This is one of my favorites.

  501. A living cell.

  502. This is one of the most

  503. complex things

  504. on earth.

  505. A single living cell

  506. has,

  507. and these are not

  508. my words,

  509. and these are not

  510. just the words

  511. of Christians,

  512. it has all kinds

  513. of micro machinery

  514. inside of it

  515. that are at work

  516. performing

  517. their various functions

  518. all the time.

  519. And I don't think

  520. they've just chosen

  521. those words

  522. because, you know,

  523. that's our experience.

  524. So, yeah,

  525. it kind of looks

  526. like machines.

  527. No, they're machines.

  528. According to

  529. microbiologists,

  530. there are

  531. biological motors

  532. and rotors

  533. and bushings

  534. and walking mechanisms

  535. and all kinds

  536. of stuff

  537. going on

  538. all the time

  539. inside just one

  540. of these little things.

  541. There's factories

  542. called ribosomes

  543. that help produce

  544. proteins.

  545. There's a storage

  546. center

  547. where all the

  548. information

  549. and blueprints

  550. are kept

  551. on strands of DNA.

  552. There's little machines

  553. that go in there

  554. and make copies

  555. of various strands

  556. and bring those copies

  557. to the factories

  558. and then the factories

  559. call for all these

  560. other machines

  561. to bring the various

  562. pieces that are

  563. required to

  564. form these

  565. massive chains

  566. of amino acids

  567. that then get

  568. carried over

  569. to this other machine

  570. that folds them

  571. into the

  572. perfect shape

  573. so that they can

  574. function

  575. as the protein

  576. that they are.

  577. And all of this

  578. is happening

  579. all the time

  580. in this complex

  581. world

  582. of the living cell.

  583. It's mind-blowing.

  584. It's breathtaking.

  585. God created it.

  586. I just have to say here

  587. there's one guy

  588. that I just

  589. I couldn't help but

  590. I came across

  591. his stuff this week

  592. and he's working

  593. at stuff

  594. on a very tiny level.

  595. He's a Nobel

  596. prize winning scientist

  597. and he's working

  598. on a nano car

  599. or he's actually

  600. made it already.

  601. It's a car

  602. that's got

  603. a little carbon

  604. helix

  605. kind of spherical

  606. thing for wheels

  607. on each side.

  608. It's so tiny

  609. you can't even

  610. see it without

  611. a microscope

  612. and he's trying

  613. to figure out

  614. how to get this

  615. to move

  616. on various surfaces

  617. how to coax

  618. the wheels

  619. to roll

  620. and maybe we

  621. can even load

  622. it up with

  623. a little cargo.

  624. That's machinery

  625. and engineering

  626. on a whole

  627. nother level

  628. but it's

  629. nothing compared

  630. to what's already

  631. going on

  632. and the kinds

  633. of machines

  634. God has already

  635. wired into

  636. every living

  637. creature.

  638. not only

  639. has God

  640. made this

  641. world

  642. and everything

  643. in it

  644. so functional

  645. so complex

  646. but he has

  647. made it

  648. beautiful.

  649. It's not

  650. just all

  651. of his

  652. masterpiece

  653. blueprints

  654. enacted

  655. he's made

  656. the world

  657. the universe

  658. his canvas

  659. and I mean

  660. just think of it

  661. all the birds

  662. could be grey

  663. all the butterflies

  664. could be black

  665. and yet

  666. God has put

  667. patterns

  668. and all

  669. different kinds

  670. of colours

  671. sunsets

  672. and sunrises

  673. he's infused

  674. beauty

  675. into all

  676. of his

  677. creation

  678. it's amazing

  679. foxes

  680. this is the

  681. start of the

  682. summer months

  683. we're about

  684. to hopefully

  685. all of us

  686. get outdoors

  687. and see

  688. more of what

  689. God has made

  690. and I just

  691. want to encourage

  692. us to look a

  693. little closer

  694. to gaze a

  695. little longer

  696. to open our

  697. eyes a little

  698. wider

  699. and to ponder

  700. a little deeper

  701. as we have

  702. opportunity

  703. to look

  704. at all

  705. that God

  706. has made

  707. right in front

  708. of us

  709. we're surrounded

  710. by it

  711. in fact

  712. we are

  713. ourselves

  714. creations

  715. of God

  716. that cell

  717. that I

  718. showed you

  719. just a

  720. moment ago

  721. that was

  722. you

  723. when you

  724. started

  725. you were

  726. one of

  727. those

  728. and yet

  729. all

  730. you are

  731. today

  732. a living

  733. breathing

  734. human

  735. being

  736. was packed

  737. into that

  738. one

  739. little

  740. thing

  741. everything

  742. needed

  743. to form

  744. you

  745. was

  746. there

  747. it's

  748. amazing

  749. there's

  750. a

  751. part

  752. of the

  753. scripture

  754. where it

  755. says

  756. the whole

  757. earth

  758. is

  759. filled

  760. with

  761. his

  762. glory

  763. and it

  764. is

  765. this

  766. earth

  767. this

  768. universe

  769. is

  770. God's

  771. masterpiece

  772. and it's

  773. a reason

  774. why he

  775. is worthy

  776. of our

  777. worship

  778. you are

  779. worthy

  780. our

  781. Lord

  782. and God

  783. to receive

  784. glory

  785. and honor

  786. and power

  787. for you

  788. created

  789. all things

  790. it's

  791. amazing

  792. it's a

  793. reason to

  794. celebrate

  795. to worship

  796. day after

  797. day

  798. it's

  799. a reason

  800. to

  801. continue

  802. coming

  803. and gathering

  804. together

  805. as we

  806. are

  807. today

  808. to sing

  809. to praise

  810. and to

  811. honor our

  812. Lord Jesus

  813. Father in

  814. heaven

  815. we thank you

  816. for your

  817. word

  818. we thank you

  819. that

  820. in a sense

  821. you have

  822. given us

  823. a glimpse

  824. of heaven

  825. and the

  826. glory

  827. where you

  828. dwell

  829. we thank

  830. you

  831. that you

  832. have

  833. made

  834. this

  835. beautiful

  836. world

  837. for us

  838. to live

  839. in

  840. and that

  841. it's

  842. good

  843. and that

  844. we can

  845. enjoy it

  846. as a

  847. gift

  848. from you

  849. and we

  850. ask that

  851. you would

  852. open

  853. wide

  854. our eyes

  855. to see

  856. your

  857. fingerprints

  858. over all

  859. of it

  860. and that

  861. we wouldn't

  862. take it

  863. for granted

  864. we love

  865. you

  866. we pray

  867. this in

  868. Jesus name

  869. amen
