  1. Over the past couple weeks, we've been reflecting on the truth from God's Word that He is worthy of praise, worthy of our worship.

  2. And that's really the reason why we've started services up again, even with the restrictions that we have.

  3. Because our God is worthy. He deserves our praise and our worship.

  4. And we've looked at a number of different reasons over the past couple weeks.

  5. And this morning, we're going to bring this series to a close and look at one final reason.

  6. And we're going back to Revelation. We're going to see it through the eyes of John in his spectacular vision that the Lord Jesus gave him when he was on the island of Patmos.

  7. So if you have your Bible, we're going to just kind of work through it bit by bit.

  8. And so you can follow along there. And I'll try to...we've got some technical difficulties here, but we'll try to manage.

  9. We've got some stuff on the screen too.

  10. And...

  11. This is where we are in this moment. And this is, of course, an artist's rendition of what John saw in his vision.

  12. We talked about this two weeks. He was called up into heaven in the Spirit, in this vision.

  13. And there he saw something like this.

  14. He saw one seated on the throne who was radiant and beautiful.

  15. Four living creatures and 24 elders, kings with crowns.

  16. And there was worship going on in heaven.

  17. And we're going to continue on a little bit with this vision and just see what John saw in his vision next.

  18. In chapter 5, verse 1.

  19. Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals.

  20. So all of a sudden, this worship moment, something happens.

  21. John notices that there's a scroll in the hand of the one who is seated on the throne.

  22. And not just any scroll, but a scroll with writing on both sides.

  23. A scroll with seven seals.

  24. This is another artist's depiction of maybe something like what he saw.

  25. And of course, John is probably wondering, just as we are, well, what is the scroll?

  26. What's written on it?

  27. What's the meaning of this?

  28. Why are there these seals on it?

  29. Well, we're going to get to that in a moment.

  30. But let's keep going and hear what John saw.

  31. Verse 2.

  32. And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice,

  33. Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?

  34. But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it.

  35. I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside.

  36. So as John is watching, a mighty angel comes in a loud voice, not just once,

  37. but the sense here is that continuously he is proclaiming,

  38. Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?

  39. It's time to open the scroll.

  40. And the sense we get is that this call, this invitation to open the scroll,

  41. goes out not just in heaven, but to the whole universe, to the ends of the universe.

  42. No one in heaven or on earth or under the earth, in all of creation,

  43. was found who is able to open the scroll, to read its contents.

  44. And so this moment of worship and praise all of a sudden takes a turn of sadness.

  45. And John, he says, I wept.

  46. I was weeping.

  47. Not just crying, but weeping because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll.

  48. But his sadness is interrupted in verse 5 as one of the elders turns to him and speaks to him and says this,

  49. Do not weep.

  50. See or behold, the lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David, has triumphed.

  51. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.

  52. Don't weep, John.

  53. There is someone who is worthy to open the scroll.

  54. And he gives two titles of the one who is worthy, the one who is able to do it.

  55. One of them harkens back to a prophecy given long ago by Jacob to his son Judah.

  56. Judah.

  57. Jacob said this, Judah, your brothers will praise you.

  58. Your hand will be on the neck of your enemies.

  59. Your father's son will bow down to you.

  60. You are a lion's cub, Judah.

  61. You return from the prey, my son.

  62. Like a lion, he crouches and lies down.

  63. Like a lioness, who dares to rouse him?

  64. And then these words, wonderful words.

  65. The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler's staff from between his feet,

  66. until he to whom it belongs shall come, and the obedience of the nations shall be his.

  67. This promise of a great king made long ago, a lion descended from Judah.

  68. He also refers to the root of David.

  69. David, these words harken back to the prophecy of Isaiah.

  70. In Isaiah chapter 11.

    Isaiah 11 chapter mention

  71. A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse.

  72. From his roots, a branch will bear fruit.

  73. And it goes on to describe how the spirit of the Lord will be upon him,

  74. and how he will judge and bring righteousness and peace to the earth.

  75. Another wonderful promise.

  76. This is the one.

  77. And of course, we know who he is talking about.

  78. He's talking about Jesus.

  79. This is the one that the angel proclaimed would be born to Mary.

  80. Well, the vision goes on.

  81. In Revelation chapter 5.

    Revelation 5 chapter mention

  82. The elder says,

  83. Behold the lion, or see the lion, the root of David.

  84. He has triumphed.

  85. He's able to open the scroll.

  86. And it's seven seals.

  87. And you almost get the sense that he's gesturing.

  88. Behold, look.

  89. In that moment, John looks.

  90. And this is what he sees.

  91. Verse 6.

  92. Then I saw a lamb looking as if it had been slain,

  93. standing at the center of the throne,

  94. encircled by the four living creatures and the elders.

  95. The lamb had seven horns and seven eyes,

  96. which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth.

  97. This is one artist's rendition of it.

  98. It's not really in the throne scene,

  99. but you kind of get the idea.

  100. Seven horns and seven eyes.

  101. A very strange vision,

  102. looking as if it had been slain.

  103. There's another artist's rendition of it.

  104. In this one, the lamb is standing,

  105. wearing the crown of thorns there.

  106. So, even as we hear John say this,

  107. I mean, we should be thinking,

  108. this is not an ordinary lamb.

  109. This is a vision.

  110. This is almost like a dream,

  111. like some of the visions that were given long ago to Daniel and Ezekiel,

  112. to Pharaoh,

  113. that Joseph interpreted for him.

  114. So, there's this lamb,

  115. and there's details about it

  116. that he highlights,

  117. looking as if it had been slain.

  118. It's not dead anymore, though,

  119. because it's standing.

  120. And it's got seven horns and seven eyes.

  121. And he explains a little bit about that.

  122. From there, the vision goes on.

  123. John says,

  124. And when he had taken it,

  125. the four living creatures and the 24 elders fell down before the lamb.

  126. Each one had a harp,

  127. and they were holding golden bowls full of incense,

  128. which are the prayers of God's people.

  129. And they sang a new song,

  130. saying,

  131. You are worthy to take the scroll

  132. and to open its seals,

  133. because you were slain.

  134. And with your blood,

  135. you purchased for God

  136. persons from every tribe

  137. and language

  138. and people

  139. and nation.

  140. You have made them to be a kingdom

  141. and priests

  142. to serve our God,

  143. and they will reign on the earth.

  144. So, even at the taking of this scroll

  145. by this lamb,

  146. heaven bursts into worship.

  147. The 24 elders,

  148. the four living creatures,

  149. they begin to sing this song of praise

  150. to the lamb.

  151. From there, the worship service seems to grow

  152. in size.

  153. Verse 11,

  154. Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels,

  155. numbering thousands upon thousands

  156. and ten thousand times ten thousand.

  157. They encircled the throne

  158. and the living creatures and the elders.

  159. In a loud voice,

  160. they were saying,

  161. Worthy is the lamb

  162. who was slain

  163. to receive power

  164. and wealth

  165. and wisdom

  166. and strength

  167. and honor

  168. and glory

  169. and praise.

  170. You can just imagine

  171. what this might have

  172. seemed like to John.

  173. What this would have looked like.

  174. I imagine it's something like

  175. maybe stepping out

  176. into a stadium

  177. full of a hundred thousand people,

  178. except more.

  179. There were myriads

  180. of myriads of angels

  181. all over the place.

  182. Can you imagine the sound of them

  183. singing these words?

  184. What a moment that must have been.

  185. But it doesn't stop there.

  186. The worship service gets even bigger.

  187. Verse 13,

  188. Then I heard every creature

  189. in heaven and on earth

  190. and under the earth

  191. and on the sea

  192. and all that is in them

  193. saying,

  194. To him who sits on the throne

  195. and to the lamb

  196. be praise

  197. and honor

  198. and glory

  199. and power

  200. forever and ever.

  201. The four living creatures said,

  202. Amen.

  203. And the elders

  204. fell down

  205. and worshipped.

  206. What a moment.

  207. What a sight.

  208. What a sound.

  209. I wish that I could have seen

  210. with my own eyes

  211. what John saw

  212. in this vision.

  213. A spectacular

  214. worship service

  215. in heaven.

  216. Now what does this vision

  217. mean?

  218. Here's the big question.

  219. And of course,

  220. this is the book of Revelation.

  221. This is one of the most debated,

  222. discussed

  223. pieces of the Bible

  224. that there is.

  225. And there's all kinds

  226. of different ideas

  227. and opinions

  228. and interpretations.

  229. And if you

  230. come to a different one

  231. than me

  232. in your reading

  233. or your study of it,

  234. I bless you.

  235. I would rather

  236. that you read this book

  237. and love it

  238. and treasure these words of God

  239. and interpret it

  240. a different way

  241. than not read them at all

  242. and just agree

  243. with whatever I say.

  244. But what does this vision mean?

  245. What's going on here?

  246. What are we to take from this?

  247. Well,

  248. let's look at the first element

  249. of this vision,

  250. the scroll.

  251. What does the scroll

  252. represent?

  253. I thought I had a picture

  254. of it there.

  255. Maybe not.

  256. Thanks, David.

  257. So there's this scroll.

  258. We want to know

  259. what is this scroll

  260. all about?

  261. What does it mean?

  262. And

  263. even at the outset here,

  264. I think we can cross off

  265. a few things.

  266. In Revelation 4,

    Revelation 4:1

  267. verse 1,

  268. we read

  269. about how

  270. John was first invited

  271. to come up to heaven

  272. to witness

  273. this vision.

  274. Come up here

  275. and I will show you

  276. what must take place

  277. after this.

  278. So the sense we get

  279. is that this is not

  280. a vision of what's happening

  281. in heaven right now.

  282. This is not the present.

  283. This is what's going

  284. to come later

  285. or after

  286. that John sees.

  287. And from there,

  288. we can also probably

  289. rule out

  290. this is not really

  291. a depiction

  292. of what things

  293. in heaven

  294. actually look like.

  295. And we kind of get

  296. that sense

  297. all throughout this book,

  298. but especially here

  299. in this passage,

  300. we see some elements

  301. of it that,

  302. okay,

  303. this is strange.

  304. John kind of gives us

  305. the clue

  306. that this is a vision.

  307. This is almost

  308. like a dream

  309. and there are various

  310. elements to this dream

  311. and details

  312. that have meaning.

  313. They represent something.

  314. And he actually

  315. interprets some of those

  316. for us.

  317. He kind of gives us

  318. the meaning.

  319. Like in verse 6,

  320. the Lamb had

  321. seven horns

  322. and seven eyes

  323. and those seven eyes,

  324. he tells us,

  325. represent

  326. the seven spirits

  327. of God

  328. sent out

  329. into all the earth.

  330. And we kind of know

  331. that this vision

  332. is full of

  333. representative things

  334. and not necessarily

  335. actual depictions.

  336. We know

  337. that the Lamb

  338. is Jesus,

  339. the Son of God,

  340. the God-man.

  341. And he doesn't

  342. look like this.

  343. It's in the vision.

  344. that he looks like this.

  345. And those details

  346. of how he appears

  347. to John

  348. are significant.

  349. They correspond

  350. to reality,

  351. but they're not

  352. the actual depictions.

  353. Again,

  354. we see this

  355. in verse 8

  356. where the kings,

  357. the 24 elders,

  358. are holding golden bowls

  359. full of incense.

  360. And John tells us

  361. that those bowls,

  362. they represent

  363. the prayers

  364. of God's people.

  365. So,

  366. I think

  367. those are kind of

  368. the guiding things

  369. that can kind of

  370. lead us towards

  371. how we're to

  372. read this.

  373. It's not as though

  374. we're seeing

  375. a video clip

  376. of what will happen

  377. actually in the future.

  378. It's more of a vision

  379. or a dream

  380. that God has given

  381. in which all of the details

  382. correspond to realities

  383. that we will see

  384. come about

  385. in the future.

  386. And so,

  387. let's look at,

  388. let's consider

  389. the scroll.

  390. Back to the scroll.

  391. what does the scroll

  392. represent?

  393. Well,

  394. if we continue

  395. reading in

  396. this vision,

  397. we see that the scroll

  398. represents,

  399. in a moment,

  400. the Lamb,

  401. in verse,

  402. chapter 6 and 7,

  403. we're not going to read it,

  404. but He will come

  405. and actually open

  406. the seals

  407. and open the scroll

  408. and we assume

  409. read it.

  410. And as He opens

  411. each seal,

  412. some kind of event

  413. is triggered

  414. or something

  415. is unleashed

  416. either on earth

  417. or in heaven

  418. or something

  419. that relates

  420. to both.

  421. And so,

  422. we might,

  423. it seems like

  424. the scroll

  425. represents God's

  426. decree,

  427. God's written

  428. kind of

  429. ahead of time

  430. account of the

  431. final chapter

  432. of human history,

  433. of how things

  434. are going to

  435. unfold,

  436. especially as it

  437. pertains to the

  438. final judgment

  439. and to the

  440. final salvation

  441. of God's people.

  442. And we kind of

  443. get this sense

  444. as we come to

  445. the opening of

  446. the sixth seal

  447. at the end

  448. of chapter 6.

  449. The people there

  450. are calling out

  451. to the mountains,

  452. fall on us

  453. and hide us

  454. from the face

  455. of Him who sits

  456. on the throne

  457. and from the wrath

  458. of the Lamb

  459. for the great day

  460. of their wrath

  461. has come

  462. and who can

  463. withstand it?

  464. So the opening

  465. of these seals

  466. seems to be

  467. the triggering

  468. of events,

  469. the setting

  470. in motion

  471. of what God

  472. has ordained

  473. from long ago

  474. to bring forth

  475. the final judgment,

  476. the wrath

  477. of God.

  478. These seals

  479. seem to trigger

  480. the events

  481. that either

  482. themselves are

  483. part of the

  484. day of the Lord

  485. or lead up

  486. to the day

  487. of the Lord

  488. depending on

  489. how you want

  490. to see it.

  491. But it's not

  492. all judgment

  493. and punishment.

  494. Chapter 7

  495. goes on

  496. as the seventh

  497. seal is opened

  498. and we get

  499. descriptions

  500. of salvation.

  501. We get

  502. descriptions

  503. of how some

  504. of God's

  505. people are

  506. sealed

  507. to protect

  508. them from

  509. the judgment

  510. that is about

  511. to be poured

  512. out.

  513. And we

  514. see a snapshot

  515. of a multitude

  516. in heaven

  517. singing

  518. about the

  519. salvation of

  520. God,

  521. the great

  522. deliverance

  523. of God

  524. in the

  525. midst

  526. of all

  527. of this.

  528. And so

  529. that's kind

  530. of how I

  531. would take

  532. the scroll.

  533. It seems

  534. as though

  535. it is

  536. kind of

  537. the last

  538. chapter

  539. of the

  540. story.

  541. It's sealed

  542. up.

  543. It's already

  544. planned.

  545. And there

  546. is only one

  547. who is

  548. worthy

  549. to initiate

  550. the unfolding

  551. of that

  552. chapter

  553. and the

  554. reading of

  555. it

  556. into human

  557. history.

  558. And one

  559. who is

  560. worthy to

  561. carry forward

  562. the events

  563. that are

  564. there.

  565. The final

  566. judgment

  567. and the

  568. final salvation

  569. of God's

  570. people.

  571. Well,

  572. there's the

  573. scroll,

  574. and then

  575. the next

  576. most,

  577. and the

  578. most important

  579. detail of

  580. this vision

  581. is not the

  582. scroll,

  583. but the

  584. lamb.

  585. The lamb,

  586. when he

  587. comes into

  588. this vision,

  589. just takes

  590. the whole

  591. spotlight,

  592. and it's

  593. almost as if

  594. after he

  595. takes the

  596. scroll,

  597. the scroll

  598. just kind

  599. of fades

  600. into the

  601. background.

  602. We've got

  603. to put that

  604. on hold

  605. for a

  606. moment,

  607. we've got

  608. to have

  609. a worship

  610. service

  611. here,

  612. because this

  613. one is

  614. worthy.

  615. And it's

  616. a worship

  617. service,

  618. as we

  619. looked at,

  620. that starts

  621. in heaven,

  622. and it

  623. just grows

  624. from there

  625. until the

  626. whole universe

  627. in John's

  628. vision is

  629. praising

  630. this lamb,

  631. this one.

  632. Why are they

  633. praising him?

  634. What are they

  635. saying?

  636. they're saying,

  637. you are

  638. worthy.

  639. Verse 9,

  640. you are

  641. worthy to

  642. take the

  643. scroll and

  644. to open

  645. its seals.

  646. Verse 12,

  647. worthy is

  648. the lamb.

  649. Verse 13,

  650. to the lamb

  651. be praise

  652. and honor

  653. and glory

  654. and power

  655. forever and

  656. ever.

  657. You deserve

  658. it.

  659. It belongs

  660. to you.

  661. It's only

  662. right that we

  663. praise you

  664. and worship

  665. you.

  666. Why?

  667. We've looked

  668. at a number

  669. of reasons

  670. already in

  671. this series,

  672. but what's

  673. the reason

  674. that they

  675. give here

  676. in this

  677. heavenly

  678. worship service

  679. that John

  680. sees?

  681. Verse 9,

  682. you are

  683. worthy to

  684. take the

  685. scroll and

  686. to open

  687. its seals.

  688. Why?

  689. Because you

  690. were slain

  691. and with

  692. your blood

  693. you purchased

  694. for God

  695. persons from

  696. every tribe

  697. and language

  698. and people

  699. and nation.

  700. you have

  701. made them

  702. to be a

  703. kingdom

  704. and priests

  705. to serve

  706. our God

  707. and they

  708. will reign

  709. on the

  710. earth.

  711. So there

  712. are many

  713. reasons that

  714. he is

  715. worthy,

  716. but the

  717. one that

  718. shines bright

  719. right at

  720. the beginning

  721. of this

  722. is the

  723. reason

  724. that he

  725. was

  726. slain,

  727. the reason

  728. that he

  729. died,

  730. that through

  731. his death

  732. and the

  733. shedding of

  734. his blood,

  735. he purchased,

  736. he bought,

  737. he paid

  738. the ransom

  739. to set

  740. a people

  741. free,

  742. a people

  743. from every

  744. tribe and

  745. nation and

  746. tongue.

  747. He paid

  748. the price

  749. that was

  750. required so

  751. that a

  752. great people

  753. from all

  754. over the

  755. earth could

  756. be set free

  757. from the

  758. debt that

  759. they owed

  760. God

  761. from their

  762. guilt for

  763. their sins.

  764. Not only

  765. were they

  766. ransomed or

  767. purchased,

  768. set free

  769. from,

  770. but they

  771. were purchased

  772. to.

  773. Do you see

  774. that word?

  775. Some translations

  776. say purchased

  777. for.

  778. With your

  779. blood you

  780. purchased

  781. for God

  782. persons from

  783. every tribe

  784. and language

  785. and tongue.

  786. It's not just

  787. to set them

  788. free from the

  789. negative consequence,

  790. but it's to

  791. buy them

  792. and bring

  793. them back

  794. into

  795. relationship

  796. with God

  797. to be a

  798. people for

  799. him,

  800. who live

  801. with him

  802. and enjoy

  803. him.

  804. And he is

  805. their God

  806. and they are

  807. his people.

  808. And it goes

  809. on from

  810. there.

  811. Not only

  812. that,

  813. but verse

  814. 10,

  815. you have

  816. made them

  817. to be

  818. a kingdom

  819. and priests

  820. to serve

  821. our God.

  822. This is a

  823. picture of

  824. John,

  825. what John

  826. saw at the

  827. beginning of

  828. this vision

  829. because Jesus

  830. is not

  831. still dead.

  832. He is

  833. alive.

  834. This is not

  835. a song of

  836. his sacrifice

  837. and death

  838. and that's

  839. the end.

  840. This is a

  841. song of

  842. his triumph

  843. of what he

  844. has accomplished

  845. through his

  846. death.

  847. and his

  848. resurrection.

  849. Verse 10,

  850. you made

  851. them to be

  852. a kingdom

  853. and priests

  854. to our

  855. God.

  856. We often

  857. think of

  858. that word

  859. kingdom in

  860. terms of

  861. a location,

  862. a place

  863. with boundaries.

  864. God.

  865. But as we

  866. read these

  867. words,

  868. it seems

  869. that what

  870. they are

  871. saying is

  872. that the

  873. kingdom is

  874. primarily,

  875. first and

  876. foremost,

  877. a people.

  878. It's a

  879. people whom

  880. Jesus,

  881. the Lamb,

  882. has won

  883. for God

  884. and to

  885. God.

  886. We almost

  887. get the

  888. sense here

  889. that Jesus

  890. is offering

  891. a gift

  892. to God.

  893. I have

  894. gone out,

  895. I have

  896. gone into

  897. the world

  898. and I

  899. have won

  900. for you.

  901. I have

  902. established,

  903. I have

  904. brought back

  905. into order

  906. your kingdom

  907. in this

  908. world which

  909. has rebelled.

  910. I have

  911. made them

  912. priests who

  913. will worship

  914. you appropriately.

  915. And this

  916. kingdom,

  917. these people,

  918. these priests

  919. are people

  920. from every

  921. tribe and

  922. language and

  923. people and

  924. nation.

  925. It's not

  926. just a

  927. kingdom up

  928. in heaven,

  929. it is the

  930. kingdom established

  931. from heaven.

  932. But look at

  933. the last

  934. verse of

  935. the song

  936. in verse

  937. 10,

  938. they will

  939. reign,

  940. on the

  941. earth.

  942. A kingdom

  943. on earth.

  944. All of

  945. this reasons

  946. why the

  947. lamb is

  948. worthy and

  949. why heaven

  950. explodes in

  951. praise and

  952. after that

  953. the angelic

  954. host joins

  955. in and

  956. then the

  957. universe joins

  958. in.

  959. Look at

  960. what he

  961. has done.

  962. And he

  963. didn't do

  964. it with

  965. a sword.

  966. Convert

  967. or die.

  968. No.

  969. No.

  970. He did

  971. it by

  972. lovingly

  973. laying down

  974. his life,

  975. by taking

  976. the bullet

  977. for this

  978. people,

  979. by jumping

  980. on the

  981. grenade to

  982. save this

  983. people.

  984. He is

  985. worthy

  986. because he

  987. has saved

  988. us by

  989. his blood.

  990. God,

  991. this is the

  992. ultimate

  993. reason why

  994. we worship.

  995. This will

  996. be the

  997. reason for

  998. all eternity

  999. that one

  1000. of the

  1001. big ones

  1002. at the

  1003. heart of

  1004. our

  1005. worship

  1006. forever,

  1007. this one,

  1008. our great

  1009. king,

  1010. laid down

  1011. his life

  1012. for us

  1013. so that

  1014. we could

  1015. become a

  1016. part of

  1017. this great

  1018. kingdom

  1019. that we

  1020. will enjoy

  1021. forever.

  1022. He is

  1023. worthy of

  1024. our

  1025. worship.

  1026. He is

  1027. worthy of

  1028. our

  1029. praise.

  1030. Sunday

  1031. after Sunday

  1032. after Sunday

  1033. and forever,

  1034. day after

  1035. day,

  1036. not just

  1037. here at

  1038. church when

  1039. we sing,

  1040. but in

  1041. each of

  1042. our lives

  1043. as we go

  1044. about the

  1045. various parts

  1046. of our

  1047. day,

  1048. he is

  1049. worthy of

  1050. our praise.

  1051. So I

  1052. want to

  1053. invite the

  1054. worship team

  1055. to come

  1056. forward again

  1057. and we're

  1058. going to

  1059. sing one

  1060. final song

  1061. to the

  1062. lamb,

  1063. to our

  1064. God.

  1065. Amen.

  1066. Amen.
