  1. If you have your Bible with you, please open it up to the Gospel of John.

  2. As we get back into the swing of things this fall, we're going to continue on in our journey through the Gospel of John.

  3. We began this journey way back in January, and we continued the series by video once services were suspended because of COVID,

  4. right up until about the end of May, and then we kind of hit the pause button.

  5. And summer came, a bit of an extended summer for many.

  6. Many people were traveling in a way, and many of us spent time camping, visiting family and friends.

  7. So we were in Proverbs for a bit, but now with fall right around the corner and school starting up again,

  8. we want to get back into the swing of things as well, and we're going to pick up where we left off in John.

  9. So let's start this morning by remembering what we've heard in this account from John so far.

  10. We're going to do a bit of a flashback here over a number of messages.

  11. If we remember back to the very beginning, we remember that John starts this story by telling us how the story of Jesus began.

  12. But of course, he starts at a different place than the other Gospel writers.

  13. He tells us that Jesus is the Word who was at the very beginning, and that he was with God and was God back then,

  14. that through him all things were made, and that he became flesh and stepped down into our world and became one of us.

  15. From there, we heard how John, I guess his introductory comment, he said,

  16. we saw his glory.

  17. We saw how he is full of grace and truth.

  18. And that's been kind of something we've been looking for throughout this series,

  19. to see the glory of Jesus, how he is full of grace and truth.

  20. From there, we heard about the delegation that was sent by the religious leaders from Jerusalem

  21. out to the Jordan River near Bethany, where John the Baptizer was dunking people in the river

  22. and proclaiming that there was someone special who was coming after him.

  23. And then, of course, we were there and heard about that moment when that someone special came.

  24. Jesus came out to John, and in front of everyone, John pointed to him and said,

  25. look, everyone, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.

  26. We saw how some of Jesus' first disciples began to follow him.

  27. And we felt the excitement about who Jesus was.

  28. We have found the Messiah, said Andrew.

  29. Rabbi, you are the Son of God, the King of Israel.

  30. Nathanael declared Nathanael in his first encounter with Jesus.

  31. And Jesus said to them, you ain't seen nothing yet.

  32. From there, we went to Cana, where Jesus performed his first sign.

  33. He turned water into wine.

  34. Then we followed Jesus up to Jerusalem, where he drove the money changers and sellers out of the temple courts.

  35. Stop turning my father's house into a market.

  36. We heard about how he performed other signs and miracles there in Jerusalem,

  37. and how John and the other disciples began to see how Jesus knew things about people.

  38. He seemed to know things that they were thinking in the quiet of their own hearts.

  39. We saw an example of this with Nicodemus, who came and acknowledged,

  40. you're doing things that nobody could do unless God were with him.

  41. And we listened in on the conversation they had about the need to be born again in order to enter the kingdom of God.

  42. We heard then about how the spotlight and the attention that was on John the baptizer began to shift now to Jesus,

  43. as the people began to go to him instead.

  44. We followed Jesus through Samaria, and we saw how he was full of grace and truth towards the woman at the well,

  45. and the people of Sychar, many who came to believe that he was the Messiah.

  46. Then we saw Jesus go back into Galilee, where he was met with initial excitement,

  47. but also with stubborn-heartedness and unbelief.

  48. We saw him do another amazing sign and heal the royal official's son from a distance.

  49. Now, Jesus is back in Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals.

  50. He has just healed a man who had been unable to walk for 38 years at the Pool of Siloam.

  51. And he did this on the Sabbath.

  52. And the religious leaders have come after him with a charge of breaking the Sabbath.

  53. This is in John chapter 5.

    John 5 chapter mention

  54. Jesus has given his defense.

  55. Amazingly, he has not denied working on the Sabbath.

  56. He instead has claimed that both God, his Father, and he, the Son, are always at work together.

  57. That as they do their works, they work in unison, even on the Sabbath.

  58. Let's pick up what Jesus is saying in John chapter 5, verse 19.

    John 5:19

  59. Jesus gave them this answer.

  60. Very truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself.

  61. He can only do what he sees his Father doing.

  62. Because whatever the Father does, the Son also does.

  63. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does.

  64. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these so that you will be amazed.

  65. So we spent a couple Sundays of messages reflecting...

  66. Just go back there.

  67. I'm not doing it, eh?

  68. Maybe the battery's dead on that.

  69. That's a good place to leave it.

  70. So we spent a couple Sundays of messages just reflecting on this profound mystery of how the Father and the Son are two persons,

  71. and yet one and the same God acting in unison.

  72. The Father is continuously showing the Son what he is doing.

  73. And the Son is seeing what his Father is doing and acting in unison together with him.

  74. And then in the midst of all of this conversation with the religious leaders,

  75. Jesus makes this statement.

  76. He says, yes, and he, the Father, will show him, the Son, even greater works than these so that you will be amazed.

  77. So Jesus is saying, the healing of that man who couldn't walk for 38 years,

  78. you're going to see greater things than that.

  79. Things that will cause your jaw to drop to the floor.

  80. You'll be amazed.

  81. Now let's pause for a moment and think.

  82. What's greater than being able to heal somebody who has not been able to use his legs for almost 40 years in an instant?

  83. That's pretty amazing.

  84. Who can do that?

  85. Nobody.

  86. Nobody but God.

  87. So what's greater than that?

  88. Well, there's not a whole lot of levels above that in terms of spectacular.

  89. I wonder what the religious leaders are thinking here.

  90. Like, what kind of greater works is Jesus talking about?

  91. Well, amazingly, Jesus goes right to the top of the list.

  92. Not just a little bit greater, but a lot greater.

  93. And he makes this statement in verse 21.

  94. For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,

  95. even so the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it.

  96. Like, whoo!

  97. That's a greater work.

  98. It's one thing to heal a living man's paralyzed condition so that he can walk,

  99. but it's a whole nother level to bring a man back to life from the dead.

  100. There can be no doubt here.

  101. Only God can do that.

  102. And Jesus affirms that this is something that God does.

  103. He says,

  104. For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,

  105. let's stop and think for a moment.

  106. When has God raised the dead and given them life?

  107. At this moment in history, as Jesus stands before them,

  108. it's only happened three times

  109. that are recorded in the Old Testament Scriptures.

  110. You might remember some of those stories.

  111. By the power of God, Elijah raised the prophet.

  112. He raised from the dead the son of the widow of Zarephath.

  113. By the power of God, Elisha raised from the dead the Shunammite woman's son.

  114. And then there was that one unnamed guy

  115. whose funeral was interrupted by a raiding party.

  116. And so they took his body and quickly threw it into Elisha's tomb.

  117. And his body touched Elisha's dead bones

  118. and God caused his own power to flow through Elisha's dead bones.

  119. And that guy was raised from the dead.

  120. We might say it's the ultimate miracle of healing,

  121. which God's power did.

  122. Only three times in all human history,

  123. up until this conversation that Jesus is having,

  124. has someone been raised from the dead and given life again.

  125. And Jesus is looking at these religious leaders and saying,

  126. just as God does that,

  127. the Son also does that to whoever he wants,

  128. to whoever he is pleased to do it.

  129. I've said it many times,

  130. but I would have loved to have been there

  131. just to see the look on people's faces,

  132. the reaction on their faces as Jesus said this.

  133. But it gets even better than this.

  134. Verse 24.

  135. Jesus says,

  136. Very truly, I tell you,

  137. whoever hears my word

  138. and believes him who sent me

  139. has eternal life

  140. and will not be judged,

  141. but has crossed over from death to life.

  142. Let me read it again.

  143. Very truly, I tell you,

  144. whoever hears my word

  145. and believes him who sent me

  146. has eternal life

  147. and will not be judged,

  148. but has crossed over from death to life.

  149. Do you hear what Jesus is saying here?

  150. He's not just claiming to be able to give life to people

  151. like those three times in the Old Testament

  152. when dead people came back to life.

  153. We all know that those three individuals

  154. eventually died again.

  155. No.

  156. Jesus makes it pretty clear here

  157. that the kind of life

  158. that he is talking about giving to people

  159. is not just a second chance,

  160. here and now kind of life.

  161. The kind of life he is talking about giving to people

  162. is eternal life.

  163. Life that goes on forever.

  164. The never to die again kind of life.

  165. And it's here that some of us have to admit

  166. that Jesus is talking about

  167. an even greater kind of raising from the dead

  168. than we all thought he was at first.

  169. He's talking about the ultimate resurrection.

  170. The kind that results in people

  171. not receiving the final sentence

  172. of God's judgment.

  173. Listen to Jesus in verse 25.

  174. Very truly I tell you,

  175. a time is coming

  176. and has now come

  177. when the dead will hear the voice

  178. of the Son of God

  179. and those who hear

  180. will live.

  181. What is Jesus talking about?

  182. Well I think first notice

  183. the sense of time in Jesus' words.

  184. He says a time is coming

  185. and has now come.

  186. There's a few possibilities

  187. of how to take these words

  188. but it seems to me

  189. from those words

  190. has now come

  191. that Jesus is saying

  192. that the time is here

  193. right now.

  194. We're on the edge of it

  195. and it's unfolding

  196. right now.

  197. What time?

  198. A time

  199. when the dead

  200. will hear the voice

  201. of the Son of God

  202. and those who hear

  203. will live.

  204. Now we might be tempted

  205. to think that Jesus

  206. is talking specifically

  207. about people like Lazarus

  208. or Jairus' daughter

  209. but as we just heard

  210. in verse 24

  211. Jesus is not talking

  212. about that kind of

  213. life from the dead.

  214. He's talking about

  215. eternal life.

  216. Ultimate life.

  217. And so it seems

  218. that Jesus is not

  219. referring to the dead

  220. dead

  221. but to the living dead.

  222. To those who are

  223. spiritually dead.

  224. To those who are

  225. as good as dead

  226. when it comes to

  227. God's final judgment.

  228. The time has come

  229. now

  230. says Jesus

  231. when people will hear

  232. the voice

  233. of the Son

  234. of God

  235. and when they do

  236. those who hear

  237. those who believe

  238. will cross over

  239. from death

  240. to life.

  241. They will come alive

  242. now

  243. not with

  244. their

  245. not in their

  246. physical bodily life

  247. they already have that

  248. but with spiritual life

  249. their status

  250. in God's

  251. books

  252. forever changed.

  253. We might think

  254. back to Jesus

  255. talking with

  256. Nicodemus

  257. about being

  258. born again

  259. receiving new

  260. life

  261. in our souls

  262. in our spirits

  263. by the Spirit

  264. of God.

  265. But

  266. Jesus says

  267. that's just the

  268. beginning

  269. that's the first

  270. part

  271. people here

  272. and now

  273. will hear

  274. my words

  275. and believe

  276. and come alive

  277. with new

  278. eternal life

  279. that I will

  280. give them.

  281. but the end

  282. of the story

  283. he goes

  284. right

  285. not right

  286. to it

  287. but in

  288. verse 28

  289. he gets

  290. to it

  291. we're going

  292. to skip

  293. over a few

  294. things here

  295. verse 28

  296. Jesus says

  297. this

  298. do not

  299. be amazed

  300. at this

  301. for a time

  302. is coming

  303. when all

  304. who are

  305. in their

  306. graves

  307. will hear

  308. his voice

  309. and come

  310. out

  311. those who

  312. have done

  313. what is

  314. good

  315. will rise

  316. to live

  317. and those

  318. who have

  319. done

  320. what is

  321. evil

  322. will rise

  323. to be

  324. condemned

  325. so

  326. so Jesus

  327. is talking

  328. about the

  329. full spectrum

  330. of life

  331. from the

  332. dead

  333. the spiritual

  334. life from

  335. the dead

  336. which those

  337. who hear

  338. his words

  339. and believe

  340. will receive

  341. can receive

  342. right now

  343. but he goes

  344. on to say

  345. that there

  346. will yet

  347. come a time

  348. in the future

  349. when the

  350. physically

  351. dead

  352. in their

  353. graves

  354. will hear

  355. his voice

  356. and come

  357. out

  358. and notice

  359. who he's

  360. talking about

  361. there in

  362. verse

  363. 28

  364. a time

  365. is coming

  366. when all

  367. who are

  368. in their

  369. graves

  370. will hear

  371. his voice

  372. and come

  373. out

  374. he goes

  375. on to say

  376. this includes

  377. both those

  378. who will

  379. rise to

  380. live

  381. and those

  382. who will

  383. rise to

  384. be condemned

  385. the righteous

  386. and the

  387. wicked

  388. those who

  389. belong to

  390. God

  391. to Christ

  392. and those

  393. who do

  394. not

  395. so in

  396. these

  397. few

  398. verses

  399. Jesus is

  400. talking about

  401. two things

  402. both

  403. spiritual

  404. life

  405. here and

  406. now

  407. that we

  408. may

  409. receive

  410. by

  411. believing

  412. in his

  413. words

  414. but also

  415. ultimate

  416. eternal

  417. life

  418. after we

  419. die

  420. at the

  421. final

  422. resurrection

  423. resurrection

  424. when

  425. all people

  426. are brought

  427. back to

  428. life

  429. to be

  430. sorted out

  431. in the

  432. final

  433. judgment

  434. and

  435. you know

  436. I had

  437. to chuckle

  438. as I was

  439. reading these

  440. words

  441. in verse

  442. 28

  443. Jesus says

  444. do not

  445. be amazed

  446. at this

  447. do not

  448. be amazed

  449. at this

  450. and then he

  451. tells them

  452. that it's

  453. his voice

  454. the voice

  455. of the

  456. son of

  457. God

  458. that they

  459. will hear

  460. calling

  461. them out

  462. of their

  463. graves

  464. before the

  465. final

  466. judgment

  467. what a

  468. thing to

  469. say

  470. how can

  471. they not

  472. be amazed

  473. by such

  474. a statement

  475. who has

  476. ever

  477. claimed

  478. anything

  479. like this

  480. in all

  481. history

  482. of course

  483. they're

  484. amazed

  485. here's a

  486. human

  487. being

  488. a man

  489. standing

  490. in front

  491. of them

  492. telling

  493. them that

  494. he has

  495. the power

  496. to give

  497. life

  498. and raise

  499. people from

  500. the dead

  501. just like

  502. God

  503. does

  504. and not

  505. just a

  506. temporary

  507. extension

  508. of life

  509. but permanent

  510. life

  511. that lasts

  512. forever

  513. a gift

  514. that they

  515. can receive

  516. now

  517. by hearing

  518. his words

  519. and believing

  520. them

  521. and a gift

  522. that they

  523. will ultimately

  524. open up

  525. later

  526. when he

  527. calls them

  528. out of their

  529. graves

  530. at the end

  531. of this

  532. world's

  533. story

  534. you have

  535. to know

  536. that with

  537. these words

  538. Jesus is

  539. causing a

  540. stir

  541. I mean

  542. listen to

  543. what he's

  544. saying

  545. to what

  546. he's

  547. claiming

  548. to what

  549. he's

  550. promising

  551. to people

  552. he's

  553. offering

  554. people

  555. what

  556. only

  557. God

  558. can

  559. offer

  560. them

  561. and his

  562. claim is

  563. this

  564. God

  565. has sent

  566. me

  567. to put

  568. this

  569. gracious

  570. gift

  571. on the

  572. table

  573. for you

  574. and offer

  575. it to

  576. you

  577. listen

  578. to me

  579. I have

  580. the solution

  581. to your

  582. death

  583. problem

  584. and so

  585. I ask

  586. all of

  587. you

  588. this

  589. afternoon

  590. this

  591. morning

  592. not

  593. there

  594. yet

  595. do

  596. you

  597. believe

  598. that

  599. Jesus

  600. can

  601. give

  602. you

  603. eternal

  604. life

  605. I

  606. wonder

  607. where

  608. these

  609. words

  610. hit

  611. you

  612. this

  613. morning

  614. I

  615. wonder

  616. if

  617. some

  618. of

  619. us

  620. hear

  621. this

  622. and

  623. think

  624. well

  625. that's

  626. Christianity

  627. 101

  628. that's

  629. the

  630. basics

  631. why

  632. are you

  633. telling

  634. me

  635. this

  636. again

  637. I

  638. know

  639. that

  640. already

  641. I've

  642. already

  643. believed

  644. that

  645. tell me

  646. something

  647. that has

  648. to do

  649. with my

  650. life

  651. here

  652. and

  653. now

  654. and

  655. the

  656. things

  657. I

  658. was

  659. doing

  660. this

  661. week

  662. but

  663. it

  664. does

  665. have

  666. to

  667. do

  668. with

  669. your

  670. life

  671. here

  672. and

  673. now

  674. yesterday

  675. I was

  676. out at

  677. the

  678. cemetery

  679. with

  680. a

  681. family

  682. as

  683. they

  684. lowered

  685. the

  686. body

  687. of

  688. a

  689. loved

  690. one

  691. into

  692. the

  693. ground

  694. and

  695. I

  696. was

  697. reminded

  698. again

  699. that

  700. sooner

  701. or

  702. later

  703. each

  704. one

  705. of

  706. us

  707. here

  708. in this

  709. room

  710. will have

  711. our turn

  712. when our

  713. families

  714. will lower

  715. into the

  716. ground

  717. what's left

  718. of our

  719. bodies

  720. the

  721. day

  722. we

  723. die

  724. is

  725. coming

  726. for

  727. each

  728. and

  729. every

  730. one

  731. of

  732. us

  733. perhaps

  734. even

  735. sooner

  736. than

  737. we

  738. might

  739. expect

  740. and

  741. when

  742. the

  743. day

  744. for

  745. our

  746. funeral

  747. comes

  748. everything

  749. we

  750. did

  751. with

  752. our

  753. lives

  754. here

  755. and

  756. now

  757. will

  758. be

  759. put

  760. into

  761. perspective

  762. nothing

  763. will be

  764. as

  765. important

  766. as

  767. the

  768. eternal

  769. spiritual

  770. life

  771. that

  772. we

  773. did

  774. or

  775. did

  776. not

  777. receive

  778. from

  779. Jesus

  780. nothing

  781. will be

  782. as

  783. important

  784. as

  785. whether

  786. or

  787. not

  788. we

  789. listened

  790. to

  791. the

  792. words

  793. that

  794. Jesus

  795. spoke

  796. nothing

  797. will be

  798. as

  799. important

  800. as

  801. whether

  802. or

  803. not

  804. we

  805. believed

  806. them

  807. and

  808. responded

  809. to

  810. them

  811. and

  812. lived

  813. according

  814. to

  815. them

  816. here

  817. and

  818. now

  819. in

  820. every

  821. area

  822. of

  823. our

  824. lives

  825. it's

  826. easy

  827. to get

  828. caught

  829. up

  830. in

  831. this

  832. world

  833. isn't

  834. it

  835. in

  836. the

  837. cares

  838. and

  839. concerns

  840. of

  841. this

  842. world

  843. in

  844. this

  845. world's

  846. priorities

  847. even

  848. in

  849. its

  850. pleasures

  851. but

  852. are

  853. you

  854. ready

  855. for

  856. the

  857. day

  858. when

  859. Jesus

  860. voice

  861. will

  862. command

  863. you

  864. out

  865. of

  866. your

  867. grave

  868. to

  869. stand

  870. before

  871. him

  872. those

  873. who

  874. believed

  875. in

  876. him

  877. and

  878. by

  879. faith

  880. have

  881. done

  882. what

  883. is

  884. good

  885. will

  886. rise

  887. to

  888. live

  889. forever

  890. and

  891. those

  892. who

  893. did

  894. not

  895. believe

  896. and

  897. have

  898. continued

  899. on

  900. doing

  901. what

  902. is

  903. evil

  904. will

  905. rise

  906. to

  907. be

  908. condemned

  909. are

  910. you

  911. ready

  912. for

  913. that

  914. day

  915. this

  916. should

  917. absolutely

  918. change

  919. the

  920. way

  921. that

  922. we

  923. think

  924. and

  925. feel

  926. and

  927. plan

  928. and

  929. decide

  930. and

  931. live

  932. in

  933. this

  934. next

  935. week

  936. I

  937. hope

  938. and

  939. pray

  940. that

  941. it

  942. does

  943. let's

  944. pray

  945. yeah

  946. father

  947. in

  948. heaven

  949. we

  950. thank

  951. you

  952. for

  953. these

  954. precious

  955. words

  956. that

  957. we

  958. get

  959. to

  960. be

  961. there

  962. and

  963. hear

  964. what

  965. Jesus

  966. really

  967. said

  968. to

  969. those

  970. religious

  971. leaders

  972. I

  973. pray

  974. God

  975. that

  976. you

  977. wouldn't

  978. let

  979. us

  980. just

  981. pass

  982. over

  983. these

  984. words

  985. is

  986. something

  987. that

  988. we

  989. heard

  990. a lot

  991. of

  992. before

  993. but

  994. that

  995. you

  996. would

  997. cause

  998. those

  999. words

  1000. to

  1001. take

  1002. root

  1003. in

  1004. our

  1005. heart

  1006. please

  1007. draw

  1008. our

  1009. attention

  1010. and

  1011. our

  1012. affection

  1013. to

  1014. heaven

  1015. to

  1016. the

  1017. things

  1018. that

  1019. are

  1020. most

  1021. important

  1022. in

  1023. this

  1024. great

  1025. story

  1026. do

  1027. a

  1028. miracle

  1029. in

  1030. our

  1031. hearts

  1032. and

  1033. in

  1034. the

  1035. hearts

  1036. of

  1037. all

  1038. who

  1039. call

  1040. this

  1041. church

  1042. their

  1043. home

  1044. many

  1045. of

  1046. who

  1047. are

  1048. not

  1049. here

  1050. today

  1051. we

  1052. ask

  1053. and

  1054. pray

  1055. this

  1056. in

  1057. Jesus

  1058. name

  1059. amen
