  1. We're working through the story of Jesus in the Gospel of John, and for the last while

  2. we have been listening to Jesus' conversation that he's having with the religious leaders

  3. here in John chapter 5.

    John 5 chapter mention

  4. Right now in the story, Jesus is in Jerusalem.

  5. He's just healed a man on the Sabbath day, and the religious leaders are going after

  6. him.

  7. They want him dead.

  8. They're furious with him.

  9. They believe that he is a blasphemer because of the special relationship that he claims

  10. to have with God, his Father.

  11. Jesus has been saying some pretty amazing things.

  12. He's been saying things like, just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life,

  13. so also the Son gives life to whom he is pleased to give it.

  14. He's been saying things like, the Father has entrusted all judgment to the Son.

  15. He's been saying things like, a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear

  16. the voice of the Son and come out, and those who have done what is good will rise to live,

  17. and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.

  18. He's been saying things like, very truly, I tell you, whoever hears my words and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged.

  19. Astonishing claims that Jesus has been making in this conversation.

  20. Well, this morning we're going to finish off this conversation between Jesus and the religious leaders in John chapter 5,

    John 5 chapter mention

  21. and in these verses that we're about to read, John continues to tell us only what Jesus said that day.

  22. But you can hear in the words and the tone and the flow of what Jesus said that this is a back-and-forth conversation, likely,

  23. and probably a heated conversation.

  24. There's one big question that seems to lie beneath the surface of what Jesus is about to say,

  25. and if the religious leaders are not asking it out loud,

  26. we can be sure that they are at least thinking it in their hearts.

  27. And the question is this,

  28. Why should we believe you, Jesus?

  29. Why should we believe what you say?

  30. You all hear the things that he's saying.

  31. These are claims like no one has ever made.

  32. Why should we believe you?

  33. Let's read it in John chapter 5, verse 31.

    John 5:31

  34. This is Jesus' response.

  35. He says,

  36. If I testify about myself,

  37. my testimony is not true.

  38. There is another who testifies in my favor,

  39. and I know that his testimony about me is true.

  40. You have sent to John, and he has testified to the truth.

  41. Not that I accept human testimony,

  42. but I mention it that you may be saved.

  43. John was a lamp that burned and gave light,

  44. and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.

  45. I have testimony weightier than that of John.

  46. For the works that the Father has given me to finish,

  47. the very works that I am doing,

  48. testify that the Father has sent me.

  49. And the Father who sent me has himself testified concerning me.

  50. You have never heard his voice,

  51. nor seen his form,

  52. nor does his word dwell in you,

  53. for you do not believe the one he sent.

  54. You study the scriptures diligently,

  55. because you think that in them you have eternal life.

  56. These are the very scriptures that testify about me.

  57. Yet you refuse to come to me,

  58. to have life.

  59. I do not accept glory from human beings,

  60. but I know you.

  61. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts.

  62. I have come in my Father's name,

  63. and you do not accept me.

  64. But if someone else comes in his own name,

  65. you will accept him.

  66. How can you believe,

  67. since you accept glory from one another,

  68. but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?

  69. But do not think I will accuse you before the Father.

  70. Your accuser is Moses,

  71. on whom your hopes are set.

  72. If you believed Moses,

  73. you would believe me,

  74. for he wrote about me.

  75. But since you do not believe what he wrote,

  76. how are you going to believe what I say?

  77. This was Jesus' answer,

  78. and there's a lot in that answer.

  79. Why should we believe you?

  80. The first major thing that Jesus says,

  81. the first answer that he gives to their question,

  82. is that there is one who bears witness.

  83. that what he's saying is true.

  84. There is one who gives his testimony

  85. to confirm that Jesus speaks the truth.

  86. Woven through this whole section

  87. is the language of testimony,

  88. and testifying.

  89. Let's listen to Jesus' words there in verse 31.

  90. He says,

  91. if I testify about myself,

  92. my testimony is not true.

  93. Or some translations say,

  94. my testimony is not valid.

  95. What does Jesus mean by that?

  96. Well, people who have studied this much more than I have,

  97. and probably understand it better than I do,

  98. have pointed to a couple of things.

  99. First,

  100. Jesus has already made it clear

  101. that he does nothing by himself.

  102. Back in verse 19 and in verse 30,

  103. he said that he only does

  104. what he sees his father doing.

  105. He only judges

  106. in accordance with what he hears

  107. from his father.

  108. And so we've heard this truth,

  109. and we'll hear it again in the gospel.

  110. Jesus does not act independently

  111. of his father.

  112. As we'll see later in the gospel,

  113. he does not speak independently

  114. of him either.

  115. He says only what the father

  116. has told him to say.

  117. He's not here

  118. to accomplish

  119. his own agenda.

  120. He tells us that he is here

  121. to accomplish the will

  122. of his father.

  123. If I testify about myself,

  124. my testimony is not true

  125. or valid.

  126. And so perhaps,

  127. just as Jesus does not seek

  128. to please himself,

  129. neither does he seek

  130. to testify about himself.

  131. Or we might say,

  132. he doesn't seek

  133. to be his own witness,

  134. to confirm his own words.

  135. Jesus,

  136. you'll know this

  137. from the scriptures,

  138. the story that you've heard already,

  139. that he always had

  140. a perfect answer

  141. to every challenging question

  142. that was asked of him.

  143. But I think what Jesus is saying

  144. is that his goal

  145. was never to just vindicate himself.

  146. in the eyes of others

  147. or to prove

  148. beyond the shadow of a doubt

  149. to everyone

  150. that every word he said

  151. was true

  152. or to make others believe

  153. what he was saying.

  154. His goal was not

  155. to win the argument,

  156. to be his own witness.

  157. His goal

  158. was to say

  159. just what the father

  160. told him to say.

  161. The second thing

  162. that people point to here

  163. seems to have to do

  164. with the Jewish law.

  165. According to the Jewish law,

  166. one witness

  167. was not enough

  168. to convict someone

  169. of a crime.

  170. And so,

  171. in the same way,

  172. we're not expected

  173. to believe

  174. any guy

  175. who comes along

  176. and claims things

  177. like Jesus

  178. has claimed

  179. just because

  180. he claims them.

  181. of course,

  182. God would give us more.

  183. He would give us

  184. another witness,

  185. other testimonies

  186. that bear witness

  187. to confirm

  188. what Jesus is saying.

  189. And Jesus tells us

  190. this in verse 32.

  191. There is another,

  192. says Jesus,

  193. who testifies

  194. about me

  195. or in my favor.

  196. And I know

  197. that his testimony

  198. about me

  199. is true.

  200. So,

  201. who is this other

  202. who testifies

  203. about Jesus?

  204. Well,

  205. if we keep reading,

  206. it would seem

  207. like Jesus

  208. might mean

  209. John the baptizer.

  210. The next verse says,

  211. you have sent to John

  212. and he has testified

  213. to the truth.

  214. If you remember

  215. how this gospel started,

  216. right at the beginning,

  217. John the gospel writer

  218. told us

  219. that John the baptizer

  220. came to bear witness

  221. to the light

  222. that was coming

  223. into the world.

  224. And so,

  225. it's reasonable,

  226. it seems reasonable

  227. to think that Jesus

  228. is talking about

  229. John the baptizer,

  230. this other witness,

  231. this other person

  232. who bears witness

  233. or testifies to Jesus.

  234. But,

  235. that being said,

  236. most scholars,

  237. commentators,

  238. think that Jesus

  239. is referring

  240. not to John the baptizer

  241. but to God himself,

  242. his father,

  243. as the one

  244. who bears witness

  245. or testifies

  246. about him.

  247. And there's some good reasons

  248. to go with that as well.

  249. In verse 34,

  250. Jesus says,

  251. I do not accept

  252. human testimony.

  253. So,

  254. perhaps,

  255. Jesus meant

  256. the father

  257. all along

  258. but maybe

  259. the religious leaders

  260. thought he was referring

  261. to John the baptizer.

  262. And so,

  263. the line of thinking

  264. goes that maybe

  265. Jesus is acknowledging,

  266. yes,

  267. John has testified

  268. to the truth.

  269. You've heard it from him

  270. when you sent

  271. the delegation

  272. out to him.

  273. But I don't receive

  274. testimony from man.

  275. That's not the other

  276. testimony I'm talking about.

  277. I affirm

  278. John

  279. so that you might

  280. listen to him

  281. and believe

  282. what he's saying

  283. and be saved.

  284. he goes on

  285. to talk about

  286. John in verse 35.

  287. He says,

  288. John was a lamp

  289. that burned

  290. and gave light

  291. and you chose

  292. for a time

  293. to enjoy

  294. his light.

  295. But notice

  296. Jesus'

  297. careful choice

  298. of words.

  299. You chose

  300. for a time.

  301. you were excited.

  302. You were happy

  303. that a prophet

  304. of God

  305. seemed to be here

  306. after all these years.

  307. But eventually

  308. your excitement

  309. with John

  310. wore off.

  311. Maybe it was

  312. when John

  313. began calling

  314. some of you

  315. a brood of vipers

  316. and calling you

  317. to repent.

  318. Maybe it was

  319. when he started

  320. pointing people

  321. towards me.

  322. No.

  323. I have testimony

  324. weightier

  325. than that of John

  326. says Jesus.

  327. I have something

  328. much greater

  329. that confirms

  330. the words

  331. that I say.

  332. A greater reason

  333. why you should

  334. believe me.

  335. A testimony

  336. that bears witness

  337. to the truth

  338. of my words.

  339. What is it?

  340. Who gives

  341. this greater testimony?

  342. I think Jesus

  343. is referring

  344. to God the Father.

  345. And the Father's

  346. testimony

  347. comes

  348. in the form

  349. of giving the Son

  350. works

  351. to do.

  352. I have testimony

  353. weightier than that

  354. of John

  355. for the works

  356. that the Father

  357. has given me

  358. to finish.

  359. The very works

  360. that I am doing

  361. testify

  362. that the Father

  363. has sent me.

  364. When Jesus

  365. speaks of works

  366. he probably means

  367. more than just

  368. miracles.

  369. but for sure

  370. when he says

  371. works

  372. I think he's

  373. including

  374. the miracles

  375. that he's been

  376. performing.

  377. You might remember

  378. earlier in this

  379. discussion

  380. he told the

  381. religious leaders

  382. back in

  383. verse 20

  384. you will see

  385. greater works

  386. than these

  387. so that you

  388. will be amazed.

  389. They'd already

  390. seen or at least

  391. heard of how

  392. he'd healed

  393. healed the man

  394. at the pool

  395. of Siloam

  396. the guy

  397. who couldn't

  398. walk for 38

  399. years.

  400. An amazing

  401. miracle.

  402. Jesus says

  403. you're going to

  404. see greater

  405. works than

  406. these.

  407. So when he

  408. says works

  409. I think he's

  410. talking about

  411. miraculous things

  412. but even more

  413. than that

  414. there's a bit

  415. of a testimony

  416. in the works

  417. themselves.

  418. That Jesus

  419. does miracles

  420. points to

  421. the reality

  422. that the

  423. Father has

  424. sent him.

  425. Nicodemus

  426. got it right

  427. back in

  428. chapter 3

  429. when he

  430. went out on a

  431. limb and said

  432. this

  433. no one

  434. could perform

  435. the signs

  436. you are doing

  437. if God

  438. were not

  439. with him.

  440. Nicodemus

  441. has been

  442. connecting the

  443. dots in the

  444. right way.

  445. He sees

  446. this couldn't

  447. happen unless

  448. God were

  449. with you.

  450. In other

  451. words

  452. the very

  453. things that

  454. Jesus is

  455. doing

  456. turning water

  457. into wine

  458. at the

  459. wedding

  460. flipping the

  461. tables in the

  462. temple courts

  463. and chasing

  464. out the

  465. sellers and

  466. the money

  467. changers

  468. the other

  469. signs that

  470. he performed

  471. that weren't

  472. written down

  473. by John

  474. the healing

  475. of the royal

  476. official's son

  477. from a distance

  478. all the things

  479. that the other

  480. gospel writers

  481. have told us

  482. that Jesus

  483. has been doing

  484. up until this

  485. point in the

  486. story

  487. casting out

  488. demons

  489. preaching the

  490. good news

  491. of the

  492. kingdom of

  493. God

  494. all of

  495. these

  496. the very

  497. works that

  498. I'm doing

  499. says Jesus

  500. testify

  501. these very

  502. things I'm

  503. doing are

  504. themselves

  505. a testimony

  506. from the

  507. father that

  508. he has

  509. sent me

  510. they're his

  511. signature of

  512. authenticity

  513. upon my

  514. words that's

  515. how you can

  516. know that

  517. what I'm

  518. saying is

  519. true

  520. notice the

  521. little word

  522. Jesus uses

  523. there for

  524. the works

  525. that the

  526. father has

  527. given me

  528. to finish

  529. there are

  530. even more

  531. to come

  532. that I

  533. have not

  534. yet

  535. finished

  536. that you

  537. will

  538. see

  539. in verse

  540. 37

  541. he says

  542. the father

  543. who sent

  544. me

  545. he himself

  546. has testified

  547. concerning

  548. me

  549. he is my

  550. witness

  551. so that's the

  552. first answer

  553. that Jesus

  554. gives

  555. why should

  556. we believe

  557. you

  558. the answer

  559. because

  560. God

  561. my father

  562. has been

  563. testifying

  564. that what I

  565. say is true

  566. through the

  567. works that he

  568. has given me

  569. to do

  570. possibly when

  571. he spoke

  572. from heaven

  573. with an

  574. audible

  575. voice

  576. and as we'll

  577. see in a

  578. moment

  579. he has also

  580. testified

  581. through the

  582. prophets

  583. that penned

  584. the scriptures

  585. long ago

  586. but at

  587. this point

  588. what Jesus

  589. goes on to

  590. say takes a

  591. bit of a

  592. turn

  593. up until

  594. now this

  595. discussion

  596. has kind of

  597. been focused

  598. on Jesus

  599. but now

  600. there's a bit

  601. of a shift

  602. and Jesus

  603. turns the

  604. focus of

  605. the conversation

  606. onto them

  607. the religious

  608. leaders

  609. he says

  610. you have

  611. never heard

  612. his voice

  613. nor seen

  614. his form

  615. nor does

  616. his word

  617. dwell in

  618. you

  619. for you

  620. do not

  621. believe

  622. the one

  623. he sent

  624. we've seen

  625. this many

  626. times throughout

  627. the gospel

  628. of John

  629. already

  630. Jesus has

  631. this amazing

  632. knowledge

  633. of people

  634. he knows

  635. what they're

  636. thinking

  637. he knows

  638. what they're

  639. feeling

  640. he knows

  641. what's going

  642. on in their

  643. hearts

  644. he knows

  645. details about

  646. their lives

  647. that he has

  648. not been

  649. present in

  650. the flesh

  651. to see

  652. you'll remember

  653. that with

  654. Nathanael

  655. when Nathanael

  656. came to

  657. follow him

  658. Jesus told

  659. him something

  660. about

  661. Nathanael

  662. and Nathanael

  663. said you

  664. are the

  665. son of

  666. God

  667. he knew

  668. what was in

  669. the hearts

  670. and minds

  671. of the

  672. people

  673. the last

  674. time he

  675. was in

  676. Jerusalem

  677. when he

  678. didn't

  679. entrust

  680. himself

  681. to anyone

  682. he knew

  683. what was

  684. going on

  685. in Nicodemus

  686. his thoughts

  687. he knew

  688. about the

  689. five husbands

  690. that the

  691. woman at

  692. the well

  693. had

  694. and here

  695. we see

  696. again

  697. Jesus

  698. knows

  699. what's

  700. going on

  701. in the

  702. hearts

  703. of the

  704. religious

  705. leaders

  706. who are

  707. challenging

  708. him

  709. and he

  710. declares

  711. it out

  712. loud

  713. to them

  714. he says

  715. you have

  716. never heard

  717. his voice

  718. nor seen

  719. his form

  720. nor does

  721. his word

  722. dwell

  723. in you

  724. for you

  725. do not

  726. believe

  727. the one

  728. he sent

  729. Jesus

  730. goes on

  731. to tell

  732. them more

  733. about what

  734. he knows

  735. about them

  736. in verse

  737. 40

  738. he says

  739. you refuse

  740. to come

  741. to me

  742. to have

  743. life

  744. that word

  745. refuse

  746. in the

  747. original

  748. a more

  749. literal

  750. translation

  751. you are

  752. unwilling

  753. you do

  754. not want

  755. to come

  756. to me

  757. so that

  758. you may

  759. have

  760. life

  761. the

  762. evidence

  763. the

  764. testimony

  765. the

  766. witness

  767. to the

  768. truth

  769. of my

  770. words

  771. is

  772. clear

  773. it's

  774. clear

  775. in my

  776. works

  777. it's

  778. clear

  779. in the

  780. scriptures

  781. it's

  782. not

  783. for lack

  784. of

  785. evidence

  786. that

  787. you

  788. don't

  789. come

  790. to

  791. me

  792. it's

  793. because

  794. you

  795. do

  796. not

  797. want

  798. to

  799. you

  800. do

  801. not

  802. will

  803. to

  804. come

  805. to

  806. me

  807. in

  808. your

  809. heart

  810. you

  811. do

  812. not

  813. believe

  814. the

  815. one

  816. he

  817. has

  818. sent

  819. not

  820. because

  821. there's

  822. no

  823. clear

  824. evidence

  825. not

  826. because

  827. there's

  828. not

  829. a

  830. witness

  831. not

  832. because

  833. there's

  834. nothing

  835. to

  836. confirm

  837. the

  838. truth

  839. there's

  840. lots

  841. of

  842. that

  843. when

  844. Jesus

  845. says

  846. you

  847. do

  848. not

  849. believe

  850. the

  851. one

  852. he

  853. sent

  854. I

  855. think

  856. he

  857. means

  858. you

  859. choose

  860. not

  861. to

  862. believe

  863. you

  864. do

  865. not

  866. want

  867. to

  868. believe

  869. you

  870. are

  871. not

  872. willing

  873. to

  874. believe

  875. despite

  876. the

  877. clear

  878. evidence

  879. and

  880. testimony

  881. of

  882. the

  883. father

  884. in

  885. my

  886. works

  887. and

  888. in

  889. the

  890. scriptures

  891. and

  892. so

  893. Jesus

  894. goes

  895. on

  896. to

  897. state

  898. what's

  899. really

  900. true

  901. about

  902. them

  903. as

  904. only

  905. Jesus

  906. can

  907. do

  908. he

  909. says

  910. you

  911. have

  912. never

  913. heard

  914. his

  915. voice

  916. nor

  917. seen

  918. his

  919. form

  920. nor

  921. does

  922. his

  923. word

  924. dwell

  925. in

  926. you

  927. you

  928. do

  929. not

  930. believe

  931. he

  932. die

  933. the

  934. evidence

  935. that

  936. you

  937. have

  938. truly

  939. heard

  940. God's

  941. voice

  942. his

  943. testimony

  944. about

  945. his

  946. son

  947. is

  948. that

  949. you

  950. believe

  951. the

  952. one

  953. he

  954. sent

  955. the

  956. evidence

  957. that

  958. the

  959. word

  960. of

  961. God

  962. lives

  963. in

  964. you

  965. dwells

  966. in

  967. you

  968. will

  969. be

  970. that

  971. you

  972. believe

  973. you

  974. take

  975. seriously

  976. and

  977. as

  978. true

  979. the

  980. words

  981. of

  982. Jesus

  983. the one he has sent.

  984. Jesus goes on to say even more

  985. that he knows about them in verse 41.

  986. He says, I do not accept glory from human beings,

  987. but I know you.

  988. I know that you do not have the love of God

  989. in your hearts.

  990. What would that feel like to hear Jesus say that to you?

  991. Can you imagine that?

  992. God, I know you.

  993. I know that you do not have the love of God

  994. in your hearts.

  995. We're not going to go as closely with the rest of it here,

  996. but he goes on to say that he knows

  997. what's at the root of their stubborn unbelief.

  998. He tells them that they're caught up

  999. in seeking glory and honor and praise

  1000. from other people.

1001. They don't have a love of the Father in their hearts.

1002. They have a love of the attention of other people.

1003. Jesus says, essentially, in this next section,

1004. you truly care more about what they think of you

1005. than what God thinks of you.

1006. That's why you choose not to believe.

1007. It's not because the scriptures don't clearly point to me.

1008. It's not because the many signs and miracles I've done

  1009. have gone unnoticed.

1010. It's not because my words are unpersuasive and unconvincing.

1011. It's not mainly about reason.

  1012. It's about love.

1013. The religious leaders are having a love affair.

1014. They love the attention and praise of one another

1015. and of the people for their showy religiosity.

1016. They love it so much that they aren't willing to give that up

1017. to this carpenter from Nazareth who works wonders

1018. such as they have never seen before.

1019. Do you remember those words that we saw earlier in John 3?

  1020. Verse 19.

  1021. This is the verdict.

1022. Light has come into the world,

1023. but people loved darkness instead of light

1024. because their deeds were evil.

1025. Why should we believe you?

  1026. Jesus answers the question,

1027. God the Father has testified about me.

  1028. How?

1029. He's done so in the works that he's given me to do,

1030. some of which are amazing.

1031. He did so in an audible voice

1032. which thundered from the heavens at my baptism.

1033. This is my Son whom I love.

1034. With Him I am well pleased.

1035. And the third big way that the Father has testified

1036. about Jesus is through the scriptures,

1037. through the words that God has spoken

  1038. all through human history,

1039. which were penned by the prophets

1040. and preserved by God through the ages.

1041. In verse 39, Jesus says,

1042. You study the scriptures diligently

1043. because you think that in them

  1044. you have eternal life.

1045. These are the very scriptures

1046. scriptures that testify about me.

1047. Just a little bit down

  1048. in verse 46,

  1049. Jesus brings up Moses.

1050. The religious leaders were very big on Moses.

  1051. He's the one who,

  1052. the law,

1053. the first five books of the Old Testament

  1054. came through.

  1055. Jesus says,

  1056. If you believed Moses,

  1057. you would believe me,

1058. for he wrote about me.

  1059. He prophesied about me.

1060. Do you hear what Jesus is saying?

  1061. There's a clear testimony about me

  1062. in the scriptures.

1063. God spoke it long ago

  1064. through the prophets.

1065. Yet even though you've made

1066. a thorough effort to study

  1067. or search the scriptures

1068. in order to find the way to God,

  1069. to find eternal life,

  1070. you've missed it.

1071. In fulfillment of the scriptures,

  1072. I am here,

  1073. right now,

  1074. in front of you.

1075. I'm telling you that I am he.

1076. As we heard last Sunday,

  1077. because he is,

1078. the son of God is,

  1079. the son of man.

  1080. I performed a miracle this morning

1081. at the pool of Siloam,

  1082. which gives further confirmation.

1083. Yet you do not want to come to me

  1084. to have life,

1085. to receive the gift I offer.

  1086. Again,

1087. it's not that they made

1088. a careful and humble study,

1089. but just innocently didn't see it.

  1090. I think if we're listening carefully

1091. to what Jesus is saying,

1092. he knows about their hearts,

1093. it's that they do not want

  1094. to see it.

  1095. Probably most of you,

  1096. by now,

1097. have had that kind of a conversation

  1098. with someone.

  1099. Whether it's about a controversial topic

  1100. in the Bible,

  1101. or about politics,

  1102. somehow you find yourself

  1103. reading the same articles,

  1104. the same news pieces,

  1105. the same Bible passages

  1106. as someone else,

1107. and yet you come to

  1108. completely different conclusions

1109. about them than they do.

1110. And there comes that point

  1111. in those conversations,

  1112. oftentimes,

1113. where you can sense that

1114. no matter what you say,

  1115. no matter what evidence,

  1116. or passage,

  1117. or articles,

1118. or links you put in front of them,

1119. you know that it simply

  1120. won't change their mind.

  1121. They are deeply committed

  1122. to their view.

  1123. They do not want

  1124. to change their view.

1125. And even as you try

  1126. to persuade them,

  1127. you notice that instead

  1128. of what you're saying,

  1129. drawing them closer

  1130. to what you believe,

1131. to your point of view,

  1132. it's like it's only serving

  1133. to further entrench them

  1134. in their view.

  1135. This is a picture,

  1136. I think,

1137. of how it sometimes goes

1138. as we seek to share

  1139. the message of Christ

1140. with people in our world.

  1141. Not always,

  1142. but sometimes.

  1143. We throw them

  1144. the gospel rope,

  1145. a lifeline,

1146. to pull them to safety,

  1147. to salvation.

1148. And we pull on it,

  1149. trying to persuade them

1150. and draw them across the line

  1151. to safety,

  1152. to salvation,

1153. and yet in their hands

  1154. and in their minds

1155. as they look at that rope,

  1156. they don't see it

  1157. as a lifeline.

1158. They refuse to see it

  1159. as a lifeline.

1160. They see it as a tug-of-war rope.

1161. And they dig in their heels

  1162. even harder.

  1163. The more you pull,

1164. the more they dig in.

  1165. Not always,

  1166. but sometimes.

  1167. It's kind of a picture,

  1168. I think,

  1169. of what's happening here

  1170. with the religious leaders.

  1171. though the evidence

  1172. is clear enough,

  1173. there is an unwillingness

  1174. to acknowledge

1175. that Jesus is the one

  1176. standing here right now

  1177. that the scriptures

  1178. are talking about.

  1179. They were not willing,

  1180. the religious leaders,

  1181. to humble themselves

  1182. before the people

  1183. and admit that

  1184. they had been wrong,

1185. that they had been wicked,

1186. that they had been proud

  1187. and arrogant.

1188. They didn't want to admit

1189. that they had used traditions

  1190. to take advantage

  1191. of the needy

  1192. and the poor.

  1193. They loved

  1194. what their sinful

  1195. and wicked ways

  1196. had got for them.

  1197. They loved the wealth.

  1198. They loved the applause

  1199. and the respect

  1200. and honor

  1201. they got from people.

  1202. Jesus gives them

  1203. a very thorough answer

  1204. to the question

  1205. of why they should

  1206. believe in Him.

  1207. God the Father

  1208. has testified about me

  1209. through my works,

  1210. at my baptism,

  1211. through the scriptures,

  1212. Moses himself

  1213. wrote about me.

  1214. But there's a bigger

  1215. problem here,

  1216. says Jesus.

  1217. Verse 47,

  1218. you do not believe

  1219. what Moses wrote.

  1220. Truly,

  1221. the word of God

1222. does not live in you.

  1223. Verse 38,

  1224. you have never heard

  1225. His voice.

  1226. Verse 37,

  1227. you do not have

  1228. the love of God

  1229. in your hearts.

  1230. you're not living

  1231. for His approval

  1232. because you are

  1233. in love with

  1234. the approval

  1235. of other people.

1236. And so in many ways,

  1237. Jesus turns the question,

  1238. why should we

  1239. believe in you?

  1240. He turns the question

  1241. on its head

  1242. and He challenges

1243. those who are asking it.

  1244. The question

  1245. you should be asking

  1246. is not so much

  1247. why should we

  1248. believe in you?

  1249. That's obvious.

  1250. Look at the works.

  1251. Look at the miracles.

  1252. read the scriptures.

  1253. The question is

  1254. why are we

  1255. stubbornly choosing

  1256. not to believe

  1257. despite the clear

  1258. testimony

  1259. and witness

  1260. that God has provided?

  1261. And Jesus knows

  1262. the answer

  1263. because you love

  1264. the darkness.

  1265. You love

  1266. what is wicked,

  1267. what is evil.

  1268. You do not love

  1269. the light

  1270. as you should.

  1271. God is worthy

  1272. of your committed love,

  1273. of the love

  1274. of your whole heart.

  1275. It's as though

  1276. Jesus is saying,

  1277. I've been sent

  1278. to make this

  1279. relationship

  1280. between

  1281. you and Him

  1282. right

  1283. and good.

  1284. but the reason

  1285. you reject

  1286. me

  1287. and choose

  1288. not to believe

  1289. is because

  1290. you are deeply

  1291. entangled

  1292. in a love affair.

  1293. One you are not

  1294. willing to surrender

  1295. and let go of.

  1296. That's how the

  1297. conversation ends

  1298. here in John

    John 5 chapter mention

  1299. chapter 5.

  1300. There's no description

  1301. given about

  1302. their response

  1303. to Him

  1304. but we have

  1305. to know

  1306. that the religious

  1307. leaders are

  1308. infuriated

  1309. and seething

  1310. with hatred

  1311. towards Jesus

  1312. after hearing this.

  1313. It was this

  1314. infuriation

  1315. and hatred

  1316. towards Jesus

  1317. that fueled

  1318. them as they

  1319. went after Him

  1320. with relentless

  1321. tenacity

  1322. until they had

  1323. finally secured

  1324. His death.

  1325. So what do we

  1326. take from all

  1327. of this

  1328. for ourselves

  1329. today?

  1330. There's so many

  1331. ways that Jesus'

  1332. words here in

  1333. John 5

  1334. could speak to

  1335. us,

  1336. could speak to

  1337. our hearts,

  1338. could speak to

  1339. our lives.

  1340. Of course

  1341. at the forefront

  1342. we hear this

  1343. amazing offer

  1344. of eternal life

  1345. from Jesus.

  1346. We hear the

  1347. clear claims

  1348. that He is

  1349. the Son of God

  1350. who has come

  1351. on behalf

  1352. of His Father

  1353. with God's

  1354. own words

  1355. for people.

  1356. And we hear

  1357. the call again

  1358. and again

  1359. and again

  1360. to believe

  1361. Him.

  1362. And so let me

  1363. ask you this

  1364. morning,

  1365. do you believe

  1366. what Jesus

  1367. is saying?

  1368. Do you believe

  1369. that God the

  1370. Father has sent

  1371. Him into the

  1372. world to deliver

  1373. these very

  1374. words to

  1375. you?

  1376. Perhaps

  1377. you're sincerely

  1378. wondering,

  1379. well how can

  1380. I know that

  1381. what Jesus

  1382. says is true?

  1383. Jesus'

  1384. answer,

  1385. look at what

  1386. I did.

  1387. Look at the

  1388. miracles.

  1389. Look at the

  1390. works.

  1391. Look at the

  1392. prophecies made

  1393. long ago in the

  1394. scriptures.

  1395. Have you looked

  1396. at those

  1397. things?

  1398. Have you

  1399. seen them?

  1400. If not,

  1401. I encourage you,

  1402. look at them

  1403. again,

  1404. read them,

  1405. study them,

  1406. pray,

  1407. and ask God

  1408. to make it

  1409. clear to you.

  1410. This matters a

  1411. lot because as

  1412. we've heard from

  1413. Jesus,

  1414. eternal life

  1415. and eternal

  1416. punishment

  1417. hangs in the

  1418. balance.

  1419. perhaps you're

  1420. here this

  1421. morning and

  1422. you've heard

  1423. lots of the

  1424. story of

  1425. Jesus,

  1426. but you

  1427. know in

  1428. your heart

  1429. that there's

  1430. this deeply

  1431. rooted

  1432. skepticism

  1433. and that you

  1434. do not

  1435. really believe

  1436. it.

  1437. Not all

  1438. of it.

  1439. Maybe some

  1440. of the good

  1441. parts that

  1442. Jesus says,

  1443. but not all

  1444. of it.

  1445. If that's

  1446. you this

  1447. morning,

  1448. Jesus has a

  1449. word of

  1450. challenge for

  1451. you.

  1452. Is it that

  1453. you don't

  1454. believe it?

  1455. Or is it

  1456. that you

  1457. don't want

  1458. to believe

  1459. it?

  1460. Is it that

  1461. you don't

  1462. like the

  1463. implications

  1464. of all

  1465. that Jesus

  1466. said being

  1467. true?

  1468. Perhaps

  1469. like the

  1470. religious

  1471. leaders,

  1472. you love

  1473. other things

  1474. in this

  1475. life or

  1476. this world

  1477. that you

  1478. know Jesus

  1479. has a

  1480. problem

  1481. with.

  1482. Jesus is

  1483. graciously

  1484. offering to

  1485. you this

  1486. morning an

  1487. opportunity to

  1488. change your

  1489. mind, to

  1490. change your

  1491. heart, to

  1492. repent, to

  1493. believe, and

  1494. to find his

  1495. forgiveness and

  1496. receive the

  1497. life that he's

  1498. been talking

  1499. about.

  1500. We all know

  1501. that the

  1502. darkness has a

  1503. draw to it.

  1504. There's

  1505. something appealing

  1506. about it.

  1507. But deep

  1508. inside we all

  1509. know that the

  1510. light of our

  1511. creator is far

  1512. better.

  1513. So I invite you

  1514. to come to

  1515. Jesus if you

  1516. have not, to

  1517. give your life

  1518. to him

  1519. fully.

  1520. Even if it

  1521. scares you to

  1522. consider the

  1523. cost of that.

  1524. Listen to

  1525. Jesus.

  1526. He's got lots

  1527. of reasons for

  1528. why it's

  1529. absolutely worth

  1530. it.

  1531. Sprinkled

  1532. throughout his

  1533. teachings, which

  1534. we have in

  1535. the Bible.

  1536. Perhaps you're

  1537. here this

  1538. morning and

  1539. you do believe

  1540. with all your

  1541. heart that

  1542. every word that

  1543. Jesus said is

  1544. true.

  1545. So what

  1546. should you do

  1547. with all this?

  1548. Well, first I

  1549. hope you see the

  1550. beauty and glory

  1551. of Jesus in this

  1552. passage.

  1553. church.

  1554. He is God

  1555. and was with

  1556. God at the

  1557. very beginning.

  1558. He is the

  1559. very son of

  1560. God and yet

  1561. he will only

  1562. say what his

  1563. father has told

  1564. him to say.

  1565. He will not

  1566. go off the

  1567. script on his

  1568. own to vindicate

  1569. himself, to win

  1570. the argument so

  1571. that he can gloat

  1572. over his

  1573. opponents and

  1574. look awesome in

  1575. the eyes of his

  1576. disciples and

  1577. followers.

  1578. again we see

  1579. that beautiful

  1580. glory of Christ,

  1581. meekness and

  1582. majesty, manhood

  1583. and deity, grace

  1584. and truth in

  1585. perfect harmony.

  1586. Nobody in

  1587. Jesus' day had

  1588. the courage to

  1589. say, to speak

  1590. the things that

  1591. he spoke to

  1592. these conniving

  1593. and ruthless

  1594. religious leaders.

  1595. I love how we

  1596. see just how

  1597. fearless Jesus

  1598. is.

  1599. He speaks for

  1600. God as he

  1601. exposes the

  1602. sins of their

  1603. hearts and yet

  1604. he is gracious.

  1605. He knows that

  1606. some may listen

  1607. and repent but

  1608. he also knows

  1609. that most will

  1610. not.

  1611. Jesus has not

  1612. come to be

  1613. popular.

  1614. He's not

  1615. come to be

  1616. loved by

  1617. people.

  1618. He's come

  1619. out of his

  1620. own love for

  1621. people and

  1622. for his

  1623. father who

  1624. sent him.

  1625. And so he

  1626. does even the

  1627. difficult work

  1628. that the

  1629. father has

  1630. given him to

  1631. do.

  1632. He says even

  1633. the difficult

  1634. words that the

  1635. father has given

  1636. him to say like

  1637. in this

  1638. conversation.

  1639. I hope we

  1640. see the glory

  1641. of Jesus

  1642. here.

  1643. Even though

  1644. he did not

  1645. come to seek

  1646. praise and

  1647. glory and

  1648. honor for

  1649. himself.

  1650. Oh he is so

  1651. worthy of it

  1652. from us.

  1653. Finally I

  1654. don't know about

  1655. you but I

  1656. find in these

  1657. words an

  1658. anchor and a

  1659. firm foundation

  1660. as I think

  1661. about sharing

  1662. the good news

  1663. of Jesus with

  1664. other people.

  1665. I find comfort

  1666. and strength

  1667. in knowing

  1668. that Jesus

  1669. knows exactly

  1670. what it's like

  1671. to look into

  1672. the eyes of a

  1673. person who

  1674. he knows does

  1675. not believe in

  1676. him.

  1677. Not just does

  1678. not believe but

  1679. into the eyes of

  1680. a person who

  1681. is choosing not

  1682. to believe in

  1683. him.

  1684. Despite having

  1685. witnessed miracles

  1686. he knows what

  1687. it's like to

  1688. look into the

  1689. eyes of people

  1690. who are choosing

  1691. not to believe

  1692. in him and

  1693. yet plead with

  1694. them to grab

  1695. a hold of the

  1696. lifeline.

  1697. To come to

  1698. him and to

  1699. receive what

  1700. they do not

  1701. deserve.

  1702. Grace.

  1703. Mercy.

  1704. Eternal life.

  1705. Forgiveness.

  1706. I couldn't help

  1707. but think if I

  1708. was Jesus and I

  1709. knew that they

  1710. were as hard

  1711. hearted as they

  1712. were how

  1713. tempting it would

  1714. be to just say

  1715. well why bother

  1716. reasoning with

  1717. them?

  1718. Why bother

  1719. telling them the

  1720. truth?

  1721. It's only going to

  1722. make them mad and

  1723. stir up a hornet's

  1724. nest against me.

  1725. Why bother?

  1726. But if Jesus knew

  1727. that some would

  1728. reject his words

  1729. and yet he still

  1730. graciously and

  1731. faithfully spoke

  1732. the truth and

  1733. called them to

  1734. repent and

  1735. believe how much

  1736. more should we be

  1737. willing to do

  1738. the same?

  1739. No matter what

  1740. we know about

  1741. how they might

  1742. respond or what

  1743. we think we know

  1744. about how they

  1745. will respond.

  1746. When it comes to

  1747. sharing the good

  1748. news of Jesus we

  1749. need to be like

  1750. him.

  1751. We need to love

  1752. him and the

  1753. person that we

  1754. are sharing with

  1755. more than we

  1756. love the praise

  1757. of that person.

  1758. Some will be

  1759. offended by the

  1760. truth no matter

  1761. how graciously we

  1762. share it but

  1763. some will hear

  1764. and believe and

  1765. receive Christ's

  1766. gift of life.

  1767. And for that it

  1768. would be worth it

  1769. a hundred times

  1770. over.

  1771. Let's pray.

  1772. Lord Jesus thank

  1773. you for your

  1774. word.

  1775. We pray and ask

  1776. that you would

  1777. cause it to

  1778. take root deep

  1779. in our hearts.

  1780. Bring your

  1781. conviction over

  1782. us in every area

  1783. of our life that

  1784. we need it.

  1785. Give us your

  1786. comfort too.

  1787. Give us your

  1788. encouragement.

  1789. Fill our hearts

  1790. with faith.

  1791. And help us to

  1792. declare graciously,

  1793. lovingly,

  1794. faithfully the

  1795. good news of who

  1796. you are and hold

  1797. built that

  1798. lifeline.

  1799. We ask this in

  1800. your name.

  1801. Amen.

  1802. Amen.
