  1. So last Sunday we looked at an amazing miracle of Jesus.

  2. He fed a crowd of 5,000 plus people with just a boy's lunch

  3. out in the middle of nowhere on the eastern side of Galilee.

  4. And the reaction of the people that day was striking.

  5. Surely this is the prophet who is to come into the world.

  6. Others, John tells us, had intentions of coming out to him

  7. and making him king right here and right now.

  8. And we read, this was in verse 15, that Jesus knew their intention

  9. and so he withdrew up onto a mountain by himself.

  10. So why was Jesus going to go up this mountain by himself?

  11. What about the disciples?

  12. Well, Matthew and Mark help us fill in some of the details.

  13. We won't turn there, but I'll summarize it for you.

  14. After the feeding of the 5,000 plus,

  15. Jesus told his disciples to go get into the boat

  16. and go back across the lake.

  17. Meanwhile, he stayed by himself with the crowd.

  18. And we don't know how long, but then he later dismissed the crowd.

  19. And then afterwards, we find out from another gospel,

  20. he went up the mountain to pray.

  21. So John continues the story here from the perspective of the disciples.

  22. And we pick it up in verse 16.

  23. 16.

  24. When evening came, his disciples went down to the lake,

  25. where they got into a boat, as Jesus had told them,

  26. and set across the lake for Capernaum.

  27. So let's get the picture here in our minds.

  28. Evening has come.

  29. Supper has been eaten.

  30. Jesus made the meal.

  31. And now Jesus tells you, one of his disciples,

  32. to go get into the boat and set out across the lake.

  33. You can imagine.

  34. Well, how are you going to get across?

  35. Oh, don't worry about me.

  36. I'm going to stay a bit longer with the crowds

  37. and dismiss the crowd.

  38. I'll catch up with you later.

  39. Okay.

  40. Well, let's go.

  41. By now, verse 17, it was dark.

  42. Have you ever been out on a lake, in a boat, in the dark?

  43. Anyone?

  44. Rob has.

  45. We generally try to avoid that, right?

  46. I've only done it once myself,

  47. and it was on a beautiful, calm evening in the Okanagan,

  48. one of those fancy water sports boats

  49. that had all kinds of big, powerful overhead lights

  50. and interior lights,

  51. and they called it the Starlight Cruise.

  52. It was kind of a romance thing at family camp.

  53. It was lovely.

  54. We could see the lights of people's getaway cottages

  55. and expensive houses all along the shore.

  56. We could see the downtown skyline of Kelowna,

  57. kind of a backdrop with its towers and lights.

  58. This moment was not like that for the disciples.

  59. There was no electricity back then.

  60. Galilee was not surrounded with the lakeside cottages of millionaires,

  61. and they were not in a luxury speedboat with powerful overhead lights.

  62. No, this was more like another time that I was out in a boat.

  63. Out on Last Mountain Lake, actually,

  64. I participated in a fishing derby with my grandfather

  65. that was held out at Strasburg Bible Camp there when I was a kid.

  66. And we didn't have our own boat,

  67. so we just borrowed the camp's small fishing boat.

  68. I was just a kid back then,

  69. and even then the boat felt small.

  70. And the motor on that thing was absolutely gutless.

  71. I remember being out on the water on the last day of the derby.

  72. We had until 5 o'clock or something like that,

  73. and we wanted to have every chance to get the big one and win,

  74. at least I did as a kid.

  75. And evening was getting close,

  76. and the sun was starting to go down.

  77. It was fall, and the wind was starting to come up,

  78. and the waves were starting to get a little bigger,

  79. a little bit of white cap stuff happening.

  80. And in that little tin can,

  81. it felt like we were having quite the ride

  82. with this gutless motor just trying to get back to shore.

  83. Even that experience of mine just doesn't compare

  84. to what the disciples are facing and feeling right now.

  85. They're out in the boat.

  86. By now it was dark, says John,

  87. so the sun has already gone down.

  88. You can imagine them looking for those familiar spots along the shore,

  89. but not really able to see them and get their bearings.

  90. But then it gets even worse than that.

  91. John tells us in verse 18,

  92. a strong wind was blowing,

  93. and the waters grew rough.

  94. So we imagine the disciples are in their boat,

  95. and they're having quite the time,

  96. quite the ride out there in the dark.

  97. In verse 19,

  98. John tells us that they had already rowed about three to four miles.

  99. So like five to six kilometers,

  100. for those of you who are younger.

  101. The Sea of Galilee is about 12 kilometers across

  102. at its widest point.

  103. So if you think about Last Mountain Lake,

  104. that's about four times across the width of Last Mountain Lake

  105. is the Sea of Galilee.

  106. Or if you're at Elbow,

  107. at the marina,

  108. it's about six times from the marina to the point

  109. just right across.

  110. So they're in the middle of the lake.

  111. They've rowed quite a long ways,

  112. but there's still a ways to go.

  113. In the dark,

  114. with the wind,

  115. and the waves are coming up,

  116. and it's a long way to the other side.

  117. Don't miss the detail that they had already rowed

  118. about three or four miles.

  119. They didn't have an outboard motor on this boat.

  120. They probably,

  121. if it was a typical Galilean fishing boat,

  122. had four rowing oars

  123. and 12 guys in the boat.

  124. If we flip over to Matthew's Gospel,

  125. and we get a sense there that

  126. they were even further away from

  127. where they wanted to be at this point,

  128. simply because of the wind

  129. and the waves being against them.

  130. Mark tells us that they were straining at the oars

  131. in the dark,

  132. three to four miles from shore,

  133. riding these waves up and down,

  134. fighting to get to where they want to go.

  135. And can you imagine how they're feeling

  136. right about now in this boat?

  137. This is not the starlight cruise.

  138. This probably feels tense.

  139. Maybe a glimpse of the feeling

  140. some of us have had.

  141. Maybe you've traveled around Christmas time

  142. and you know what it's like

  143. to be traveling in the dark.

  144. Then all of a sudden you come into a blizzard

  145. and you can't see anything.

  146. And all of a sudden the road starts to feel

  147. a little more slick

  148. and you feel some slipping around in the vehicle.

  149. And then you look off to the right

  150. and you see a guy who just freshly tracks

  151. gone into the ditch.

  152. You start slowing down.

  153. That happy feeling of travel

  154. turns into that tense feeling of,

  155. oh boy,

  156. your progress towards the destination

  157. just kind of slows to a crawl.

  158. Perhaps it's a little of what the disciples

  159. felt like that night.

  160. Their progress had slowed to a crawl.

  161. Matthew tells us in his gospel

  162. that they're still out there

  163. in the middle of the lake

  164. during the fourth watch of the night,

  165. like three in the morning,

  166. straining at the oars in the dark.

  167. The wind is blowing.

  168. The waves are surging.

  169. And all of a sudden,

  170. John tells us in verse 19,

  171. when they had rowed about three or four miles,

  172. they saw Jesus approaching the boat,

  173. walking on the water.

  174. Like, what?

  175. John tells us they were frightened.

  176. Things were already tense.

  177. They'd been fighting at this for hours

  178. and suddenly out there

  179. in the middle of nowhere on the lake,

  180. they see a human figure

  181. walking on the water,

  182. approaching the boat.

  183. And they were frightened.

  184. Like, what is that?

  185. Like, hey, do you see that?

  186. Am I seeing things

  187. or is there someone out there?

  188. No, that can't be.

  189. It's not possible.

  190. What is that?

  191. Quick, bring the torch.

  192. They'd never seen anything like that before.

  193. Mark tells us in his gospel

  194. that they thought it was a ghost.

  195. I mean, what else has the shape

  196. of a human figure

  197. in the middle of a lake,

  198. in a storm?

  199. Mark tells us also

  200. that they were terrified.

  201. Not just afraid,

  202. but terrified.

  203. So much so

  204. that they began to cry out.

  205. Like, out loud.

  206. You can almost picture it.

  207. Quick,

  208. row!

  209. He's gaining on us!

  210. It's coming closer!

  211. At some point,

  212. Jesus gets close enough

  213. that they can actually

  214. hear him calling out to them

  215. over the sound of the wind.

  216. If you know the story,

  217. it's right about here

  218. in the Gospel of Matthew

  219. that Peter has his little moment

  220. where he steps out

  221. and walks on the waves.

  222. John leaves that out

  223. of his account,

  224. but he does tell us

  225. what Jesus said

  226. as he called out to them.

  227. And we can imagine

  228. he maybe said this

  229. a few times to them

  230. just to reassure them.

  231. Verse 20,

  232. It is I.

  233. Don't be afraid.

  234. Peter,

  235. John,

  236. James,

  237. Matthew,

  238. it's me.

  239. Don't be afraid.

  240. Can you imagine

  241. the look on their faces?

  242. How wide their eyes

  243. must have been

  244. as all of this

  245. was unfolding

  246. right in front of them?

  247. As Jesus walks

  248. right up to the boat

  249. with Peter

  250. like you imagine

  251. them just looking

  252. down at over

  253. the side of the boat

  254. at Jesus' feet

  255. just standing

  256. on water?

  257. I can't even imagine

  258. what this looked like,

  259. especially with the waves,

  260. you know.

  261. Was it just that

  262. the waves just kind of

  263. went around him?

  264. We don't know.

  265. But needless to say,

  266. they were probably

  267. in shock

  268. and in awe.

  269. At some point,

  270. they all accept

  271. that it really is Jesus

  272. and they take him

  273. and Peter

  274. into the boat.

  275. And Matthew tells us

  276. in his gospel

  277. that as Jesus and Peter

  278. climb into the boat,

  279. like all of a sudden,

  280. the wind died down.

  281. Just like that.

  282. Presumably,

  283. the waves did

  284. with it gradually.

  285. Verse 21,

  286. then they were

  287. willing to take him

  288. into the boat

  289. and immediately

  290. or at once

  291. the boat came

  292. to the shore

  293. where they were heading.

  294. Now,

  295. it's difficult to know

  296. just what John means

  297. by this.

  298. Many would highlight

  299. the word immediately

  300. and take this

  301. as a second miracle

  302. that somehow

  303. the boat

  304. was miraculously

  305. transported

  306. from where it was

  307. to shore

  308. by Jesus.

  309. others would put

  310. the highlight

  311. on the word came.

  312. In my Bible,

  313. it says reached

  314. but the word there

  315. is more close to came

  316. in that there,

  317. you know,

  318. there was still a process,

  319. natural process,

  320. but they were able

  321. to do it at once

  322. or immediately

  323. now that things

  324. had settled down

  325. and make a beeline

  326. for the shore.

  327. Some others

  328. have suggested

  329. that they had already

  330. rowed a good long while

  331. and maybe they were

  332. cutting more across

  333. the corner of the lake

  334. and they were not

  335. that far from shore

  336. and so they just

  337. rowed a little more

  338. and boom,

  339. they were there

  340. almost at once.

  341. If it was a miracle,

  342. we're kind of left

  343. wondering,

  344. well,

  345. how did this happen?

  346. Was it a miracle

  347. of teleportation?

  348. Like just,

  349. the whole boat

  350. goes to shore.

  351. Was it a miracle

  352. in which,

  353. you know,

  354. Jesus sat in the boat

  355. and all of a sudden

  356. the boat just starts

  357. to go real fast

  358. right towards the shore.

  359. We don't know.

  360. We'll have to ask

  361. the Lord

  362. just what happened

  363. that night

  364. someday

  365. after he returns.

  366. But whatever the case,

  367. what is crystal clear

  368. from all accounts

  369. of this

  370. is that Jesus

  371. walked miles

  372. on the water

  373. of the lake.

  374. It was an amazing miracle.

  375. An astounding sign.

  376. And if it hasn't

  377. hit home yet,

  378. I want to give you

  379. a simple challenge.

  380. This weekend,

  381. with a friend

  382. or family member,

  383. head on out

  384. to Lake Diefenbaker

  385. or Last Mountain Lake,

  386. have your friend

  387. or family member

  388. hit the record button

  389. on the phone,

  390. and I challenge you

  391. to walk

  392. on the water

  393. and see how far

  394. you get.

  395. If you can give me

  396. a legitimate recording

  397. recording

  398. of you

  399. making it

  400. even halfway

  401. across the lake,

  402. I'll give you

  403. my whole life savings.

  404. I still remember

  405. back when I was

  406. a young kid,

  407. me and a friend

  408. just thought

  409. this was the

  410. coolest story ever.

  411. Jesus walked

  412. on the water

  413. and he enabled

  414. Peter to walk

  415. on the water too

  416. in Matthew.

  417. It seemed that

  418. the only reason

  419. Peter sank

  420. was that he doubted,

  421. that he didn't

  422. have enough faith.

  423. And so,

  424. in our young,

  425. immature way

  426. of reading the Bible,

  427. we kind of figured,

  428. well, maybe the lesson

  429. here is simply

  430. that if we have

  431. enough faith,

  432. we too can walk

  433. on water.

  434. So we tried it.

  435. I can't remember

  436. if it was at a pool

  437. or if it was at a lake.

  438. I think it was

  439. at a lake.

  440. We tried it

  441. and we laughed

  442. our heads off

  443. as we watched

  444. each other

  445. taking a run for it

  446. so we could get

  447. as far as possible

  448. and then within

  449. three steps

  450. just disappearing

  451. out of sight

  452. into the water.

  453. This was an amazing sign,

  454. an astounding miracle.

  455. Mark and John

  456. at this point

  457. move on to tell

  458. other parts

  459. of the story here

  460. but Matthew

  461. thankfully lingers

  462. a little bit

  463. on the reaction

  464. of the disciples

  465. and we want to capture

  466. that this morning.

  467. This is what Matthew

  468. records.

  469. He says,

  470. Then those who were

  471. in the boat

  472. worshipped him

  473. saying,

  474. Truly,

  475. you are

  476. the Son

  477. of God.

  478. These words

  479. seem to fit well

  480. with what we've been

  481. looking at

  482. back in John chapter 5.

    John 5 chapter mention

  483. Jesus has been

  484. talking about

  485. his special

  486. relationship

  487. with the Father.

  488. father.

  489. It's like the disciples

  490. have the quarter drop

  491. all of a sudden.

  492. Like,

  493. We've heard what

  494. you've been saying,

  495. Jesus,

  496. and we've believed it,

  497. yeah,

  498. but now we really,

  499. truly believe it.

  500. Like,

  501. those lingering doubts,

  502. those wonderings,

  503. they just melted away

  504. for us.

  505. If all the miracles

  506. that Jesus has done

  507. up until now

  508. hadn't been enough,

  509. in fact,

  510. Mark actually tells us

  511. that the feeding

  512. of the 5,000,

  513. the disciples

  514. didn't get it.

  515. They didn't fully

  516. understand what

  517. it was pointing to

  518. because of the

  519. hardness of their

  520. hearts,

  521. says Mark.

  522. But it seems as

  523. though now,

  524. right after this,

  525. when they see

  526. Jesus walking

  527. on the water,

  528. for the first time,

  529. they are really

  530. starting to get it.

  531. More than just

  532. a prophet.

  533. More than the

  534. prophet.

  535. More than just

  536. the Messiah,

  537. the promised king.

  538. More than just

  539. a man.

  540. For the first time

  541. in all the gospels,

  542. Matthew tells us

  543. that they worshipped

  544. Jesus.

  545. Like,

  546. the bow down

  547. in front of him

  548. kind of worship.

  549. you truly are

  550. the divine

  551. son of God.

  552. What a moment

  553. that must have been.

  554. Let's go back

  555. to John.

  556. Finally,

  557. John tells us

  558. about some details

  559. that help confirm

  560. that this story

  561. is true.

  562. Verse 22,

  563. John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  564. The next day,

  565. the crowd that had

  566. stayed on the

  567. opposite shore

  568. of the lake

  569. realized that

  570. only one boat

  571. had been there.

  572. and that Jesus

  573. had not entered

  574. the boat

  575. with his disciples,

  576. but that the

  577. disciples had

  578. gone away alone.

  579. Then,

  580. some boats

  581. from Tiberias

  582. landed near the

  583. place where the

  584. people had eaten

  585. the bread

  586. after the Lord

  587. had given thanks.

  588. Once the crowd

  589. realized that

  590. neither Jesus

  591. nor his disciples

  592. were there,

  593. they got into

  594. the boats

  595. and went to

  596. Capernaum

  597. in search

  598. in search

  599. of Jesus.

  600. When they

  601. found him

  602. on the other

  603. side of the

  604. lake,

  605. they asked him,

  606. Rabbi,

  607. when did you

  608. get here?

  609. John wants

  610. us to see

  611. the confirming

  612. testimony

  613. of the masses.

  614. 5,000 or more

  615. people were there

  616. on the eastern

  617. side of the lake.

  618. They had eaten

  619. their fill

  620. of the bread

  621. that Jesus

  622. had made

  623. miraculously

  624. out of thin

  625. air.

  626. Many of that

  627. crowd had

  628. actually followed

  629. Jesus to the

  630. eastern shore

  631. from back on

  632. the western

  633. side.

  634. We see that

  635. in chapter 6

  636. verse 1.

  637. Whether they

  638. walked or hitched

  639. a ride,

  640. we don't know.

  641. But many of

  642. them,

  643. they stayed

  644. on that eastern

  645. side where

  646. they had had

  647. the meal with

  648. the big crowd

  649. because it

  650. seemed to them

  651. that Jesus

  652. himself was

  653. staying on

  654. that side

  655. that night.

  656. They saw

  657. John tells

  658. us the

  659. disciples get

  660. into the

  661. boat,

  662. the one

  663. boat that

  664. was there

  665. without Jesus

  666. and leave

  667. hours before.

  668. And probably

  669. they saw

  670. Jesus kind

  671. of,

  672. after dismissing

  673. the crowd,

  674. heading off

  675. up towards

  676. the mountain.

  677. So it

  678. seemed pretty

  679. clear to

  680. them that

  681. Jesus was

  682. still somewhere

  683. on their

  684. side,

  685. so we're

  686. going to

  687. stay too.

  688. And the

  689. expectation is

  690. that tomorrow

  691. we can all

  692. come back

  693. out and we

  694. can see

  695. him,

  696. we can

  697. hear more

  698. of his

  699. teachings,

  700. we can

  701. seek healing

  702. or whatever

  703. they were

  704. there for.

  705. But on the

  706. next day

  707. they could

  708. not find

  709. Jesus on

  710. the eastern

  711. side.

  712. In fact,

  713. some boats,

  714. John tells us,

  715. from the western

  716. side,

  717. from Tiberias,

  718. a town on the

  719. western side,

  720. were now landing

  721. in the place

  722. where Jesus

  723. had fed the

  724. multitude.

  725. And we're

  726. not really sure

  727. what the deal

  728. with the boats

  729. from Tiberias

  730. is.

  731. Were they

  732. full of people

  733. that had also

  734. come to find

  735. Jesus after

  736. hearing about

  737. him being

  738. over there?

  739. Were they

  740. just fishermen

  741. who had been

  742. blown in by

  743. the waves

  744. and the wind

  745. in the night?

  746. Or were they

  747. family members

  748. who'd come to

  749. join loved

  750. ones or bring

  751. supplies from

  752. back home on

  753. the western

  754. side?

  755. We don't really

  756. know, but at

  757. some point the

  758. crowd that had

  759. been there with

  760. Jesus realizes

  761. that he's not

  762. here, his

  763. disciples are not

  764. here, he sent

  765. the disciples to

  766. go to Capernaum,

  767. so let's go,

  768. let's see if we

  769. can find him.

  770. So a bunch of

  771. them jump into

  772. the boats from

  773. Tiberias and

  774. ride across to

  775. Capernaum to

  776. search for Jesus

  777. there.

  778. And eventually we

  779. read that they

  780. catch up with him

  781. and the big

  782. question is,

  783. when did you

  784. get here?

  785. The point of

  786. all this is to

  787. confirm the

  788. miracle of

  789. Jesus walking

  790. on the lake.

  791. Like, how did

  792. you get here,

  793. Jesus?

  794. Jesus, by the

  795. time you left

  796. us late in the

  797. evening, I mean,

  798. we saw you go up

  799. the mountain.

  800. You couldn't have

  801. walked all the

  802. way around the

  803. lake to here by

  804. now through the

  805. night.

  806. It's too far.

  807. And then there

  808. was the storm that

  809. came up last

  810. night.

  811. You couldn't have

  812. gone across the

  813. lake in a boat.

  814. There were no

  815. other boats.

  816. There was only one

  817. boat there.

  818. How did you get

  819. here?

  820. When did you get

  821. here?

  822. They were

  823. mystified.

  824. And what

  825. would have

  826. really baked

  827. their noodles

  828. even more is

  829. if they'd

  830. already talked

  831. to some of

  832. the people on

  833. the western

  834. side who saw

  835. Jesus get out

  836. of one boat

  837. with his

  838. disciples.

  839. Mark 6,

    Mark 6:54

  840. verse 54.

  841. As soon as

  842. they got out

  843. of the boat,

  844. this is on the

  845. western side,

  846. people recognized

  847. Jesus.

  848. They saw it.

  849. And

  850. how is this

  851. possible?

  852. people.

  853. It's as if

  854. John is

  855. saying,

  856. you think

  857. this sounds

  858. crazy,

  859. walking on

  860. the water

  861. across the

  862. lake?

  863. Go ask the

  864. various parts

  865. of the story.

  866. Ask the

  867. crowd that

  868. saw him

  869. send the

  870. disciples away

  871. and go up

  872. the mountain

  873. side.

  874. Ask the

  875. guys on

  876. the other

  877. side of

  878. the shore

  879. who saw

  880. him get

  881. out of

  882. the one

  883. boat with

  884. his

  885. disciples.

  886. We're

  887. telling the

  888. truth.

  889. At the time

  890. John is

  891. writing this,

  892. many of these

  893. people are

  894. likely still

  895. alive.

  896. ask the

  897. fishermen in

  898. the boats

  899. from Tiberias

  900. about the

  901. storm that

  902. night.

  903. Matthew tells

  904. us that as

  905. soon as

  906. Jesus and

  907. his disciples

  908. landed on

  909. the western

  910. side,

  911. they immediately

  912. recognized

  913. Jesus and

  914. then right

  915. away they

  916. sent word

  917. to all the

  918. surrounding

  919. country.

  920. You can

  921. almost picture

  922. it.

  923. Oh, you're

  924. traveling tomorrow?

  925. Well,

  926. wherever you're

  927. going, tell

  928. them that

  929. Jesus is

  930. here.

  931. And so

  932. people are

  933. coming from

  934. all over the

  935. region to

  936. see Jesus for

  937. one reason or

  938. another, to

  939. hear Jesus.

  940. It was a

  941. really exciting

  942. time.

  943. If people

  944. didn't come,

  945. you have to

  946. know that at

  947. the very least

  948. they're hearing

  949. the news about

  950. all that Jesus

  951. is doing.

  952. It's an

  953. exciting time in

  954. the story of

  955. Jesus.

  956. There's a lot

  957. happening.

  958. And we're

  959. going to

  960. continue the

  961. conversation that

  962. he has with

  963. those who

  964. found him

  965. next Sunday.

  966. But let's

  967. stop for a

  968. moment and

  969. just reflect on

  970. this amazing

  971. sign.

  972. Walking

  973. miles on

  974. water, on

  975. a lake.

  976. It's one of

  977. the most

  978. impressive

  979. miracles Jesus

  980. ever did.

  981. Most of

  982. them are

  983. impressive, but

  984. this just

  985. stands out with

  986. some of the

  987. big ones.

  988. skepticism.

  989. How does

  990. it hit you?

  991. What's your

  992. reaction?

  993. One possible

  994. reaction is

  995. skepticism.

  996. I don't know

  997. that it'll be

  998. well represented

  999. in this room,

  1000. but if this

  1001. just sounds too

  1002. amazing to

  1003. true, I want

  1004. to just give

  1005. you some

  1006. thoughts.

  1007. The

  1008. alternative to

  1009. believing that

  1010. this truly

  1011. happened is

  1012. that Jesus

  1013. walked on

  1014. the water,

  1015. is that the

  1016. disciples just

  1017. made this

  1018. up.

  1019. Right out

  1020. of thin air.

  1021. And if they

  1022. did just make

  1023. this up,

  1024. along with all

  1025. the other

  1026. miracles that

  1027. Jesus did,

  1028. why did

  1029. almost all

  1030. of them

  1031. still choose

  1032. to die

  1033. for Jesus

  1034. if they knew

  1035. that he was

  1036. a fraud?

  1037. that this

  1038. was all

  1039. a fabrication,

  1040. that there

  1041. was no

  1042. walking on

  1043. the water

  1044. and getting

  1045. into the

  1046. boat?

  1047. Why would

  1048. they die

  1049. for him?

  1050. Why would

  1051. they choose

  1052. to suffer

  1053. as they

  1054. did?

  1055. I mean,

  1056. you might

  1057. say that

  1058. people die

  1059. for religious

  1060. zeal all

  1061. the time.

  1062. Look at

  1063. suicide bombers.

  1064. But the

  1065. big difference

  1066. is that they

  1067. die for what

  1068. they believe

  1069. to be true,

  1070. for the

  1071. reward that

  1072. they believe

  1073. that they

  1074. will receive

  1075. for doing

  1076. it.

  1077. But if

  1078. this story

  1079. and all

  1080. the miracles

  1081. of Jesus,

  1082. his resurrection

  1083. from the

  1084. dead,

  1085. if all of

  1086. that was

  1087. just fabricated

  1088. by the

  1089. twelve

  1090. disciples,

  1091. then they

  1092. knew it

  1093. wasn't

  1094. true.

  1095. Why would

  1096. they willingly

  1097. choose to

  1098. be executed

  1099. for what

  1100. they knew

  1101. was a lie?

  1102. Hashem,

  1103. give me a

  1104. reason.

  1105. I haven't

  1106. heard a good

  1107. one yet.

  1108. if it's

  1109. for any

  1110. earthly

  1111. profit or

  1112. gain,

  1113. even for

  1114. their

  1115. families.

  1116. I mean,

  1117. they could

  1118. have had

  1119. plenty of

  1120. that,

  1121. probably,

  1122. just by

  1123. putting up

  1124. their hand

  1125. and saying,

  1126. I'm willing

  1127. to testify

  1128. that Jesus

  1129. was a

  1130. fraud,

  1131. and that

  1132. we made

  1133. it all

  1134. up.

  1135. And yet,

  1136. none of

  1137. them did

  1138. that.

  1139. Not one

  1140. of them.

  1141. The only

  1142. other possibility

  1143. to consider,

  1144. briefly,

  1145. is that

  1146. Jesus was a

  1147. masterful

  1148. deceiver.

  1149. that somehow

  1150. he hoodwinked,

  1151. he tricked

  1152. his twelve

  1153. disciples along

  1154. with all the

  1155. crowds,

  1156. but even that

  1157. doesn't stand

  1158. to reason.

  1159. I mean,

  1160. they traveled

  1161. with him

  1162. constantly.

  1163. How do you

  1164. feed five

  1165. thousand people

  1166. with a

  1167. boy's lunch

  1168. in the

  1169. middle of

  1170. nowhere,

  1171. and not

  1172. have your

  1173. disciples in

  1174. on the

  1175. trick?

  1176. It just

  1177. doesn't add

  1178. up.

  1179. How do you

  1180. convince twelve

  1181. grown men,

  1182. some of whom

  1183. are fishermen,

  1184. and familiar

  1185. with the

  1186. sea,

  1187. how do you

  1188. convince them

  1189. that you

  1190. are walking

  1191. on a

  1192. lake,

  1193. out to

  1194. them,

  1195. and then

  1196. get into

  1197. the boat?

  1198. You

  1199. can't.

  1200. Peter gives

  1201. the greatest

  1202. test of all

  1203. to Jesus

  1204. right in the

  1205. middle of

  1206. that moment.

  1207. He almost

  1208. essentially just

  1209. asks him to

  1210. prove that

  1211. it's you

  1212. by calling

  1213. me to

  1214. come out

  1215. to you.

  1216. And maybe

  1217. he was

  1218. asking for

  1219. Jesus to

  1220. call him by

  1221. name,

  1222. just as a

  1223. test,

  1224. you know,

  1225. do you

  1226. know who

  1227. I am?

  1228. And Jesus

  1229. does.

  1230. And Peter

  1231. himself walked

  1232. on the

  1233. water,

  1234. and the

  1235. other

  1236. disciples

  1237. saw it

  1238. for a bit

  1239. before Jesus

  1240. pulled him

  1241. up and

  1242. hauled him

  1243. the rest

  1244. of the

  1245. way back

  1246. into the

  1247. boat.

  1248. There's

  1249. just no

  1250. way that

  1251. any mere

  1252. man could

  1253. fool twelve

  1254. guys in

  1255. a boat

  1256. in the

  1257. middle of

  1258. a lake

  1259. like that.

  1260. There's

  1261. only one

  1262. reasonable

  1263. explanation

  1264. for this

  1265. eyewitness

  1266. account of

  1267. the disciples,

  1268. and that's

  1269. that it

  1270. truly

  1271. happened,

  1272. just like

  1273. they say

  1274. it did,

  1275. which means

  1276. that Jesus

  1277. is who

  1278. he has

  1279. been claiming

  1280. to be.

  1281. The disciples

  1282. came to

  1283. the right

  1284. conclusion for

  1285. the first

  1286. time that

  1287. night.

  1288. Jesus is

  1289. no ordinary

  1290. man.

  1291. He's not

  1292. just the

  1293. prophet who

  1294. speaks for

  1295. God.

  1296. He's not

  1297. just the

  1298. Messiah,

  1299. God's chosen

  1300. king.

  1301. He is

  1302. the divine

  1303. son of

  1304. God,

  1305. the father

  1306. who he

  1307. has been

  1308. claiming to

  1309. be back

  1310. in John

    John 5 chapter mention

  1311. chapter 5.

  1312. He is

  1313. the one,

  1314. as he

  1315. said,

  1316. who has

  1317. been given

  1318. authority

  1319. by God

  1320. to judge

  1321. the world

  1322. and to

  1323. grant

  1324. eternal

  1325. life to

  1326. those who

  1327. believe.

  1328. He's the

  1329. one who

  1330. will someday

  1331. call all

  1332. people,

  1333. the righteous

  1334. and the

  1335. wicked,

  1336. out of

  1337. their

  1338. graves to

  1339. that moment

  1340. of final

  1341. judgment.

  1342. Those are

  1343. the things

  1344. Jesus said

  1345. back in

  1346. John

    John 5 chapter mention

  1347. chapter 5.

  1348. This is

  1349. the sign

  1350. that confirms

  1351. that yes,

  1352. he is

  1353. that son

  1354. of God.

  1355. They

  1356. worshipped

  1357. him in

  1358. the boat

  1359. that night.

  1360. They

  1361. confessed

  1362. that they

  1363. believe him

  1364. to be

  1365. the son

  1366. of God.

  1367. What's

  1368. your reaction?

  1369. what's

  1370. your

  1371. response?

  1372. There's

  1373. a reason

  1374. why I

  1375. gather,

  1376. why I

  1377. come here,

  1378. why I

  1379. serve here

  1380. every Sunday

  1381. morning.

  1382. I come

  1383. to worship

  1384. Jesus,

  1385. the son

  1386. of God,

  1387. because he

  1388. alone does

  1389. things like

  1390. this,

  1391. walking on

  1392. the water.

  1393. Great

  1394. signs that

  1395. show that

  1396. he is

  1397. the light

  1398. and the

  1399. life

  1400. and the

  1401. hope

  1402. of the

  1403. world

  1404. sent from

  1405. the

  1406. Father.

  1407. Do you

  1408. believe that?

  1409. Father in

  1410. heaven,

  1411. please press

  1412. the reality

  1413. of these

  1414. moments into

  1415. our hearts

  1416. again.

  1417. Fill us

  1418. with wonder.

  1419. Lord Jesus,

  1420. may we

  1421. worship you

  1422. as you

  1423. deserve.

  1424. Not just

  1425. here in

  1426. church with

  1427. our songs,

  1428. but also

  1429. throughout

  1430. the day,

  1431. throughout

  1432. the week

  1433. with our

  1434. whole lives.

  1435. You are

  1436. worthy of

  1437. it.

  1438. Amen.

  1439. Amen.
