  1. We're in the Gospel of John this morning again, continuing on the story, chapter 6.

  2. Just a reminder of what we've been through these past couple weeks.

  3. We've looked at some of the pretty spectacular things that Jesus has been doing.

  4. First, he fed a crowd of over 5,000 people out in the middle of nowhere with just a boy's lunch.

  5. Then last Sunday we saw how he walked at least several miles across the Sea of Galilee

  6. and then jumped into a boat with his disciples in the middle of a storm.

  7. Amazing.

  8. We talked last Sunday about how some of the crowd from the 5,000 that Jesus fed,

  9. they couldn't find him the next day on that eastern side of the lake,

  10. so they hitched a ride with some of the boats that had come over from Tiberias

  11. back to the western side of the lake where they found Jesus.

  12. And we ended last Sunday with their question,

  13. Rabbi, when did you get here?

  14. So we're going to continue the story this morning in John, chapter 6, verse 25.

    John 6:25

  15. When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him,

  16. Rabbi, when did you get here?

  17. Jesus answered,

  18. Very truly, I tell you,

  19. you were looking for me not because you saw the signs I performed,

  20. but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.

  21. So it all starts with the question of the people,

  22. the people who had been there at the feeding of the 5,000.

  23. And they came back across the lake,

  24. they found Jesus,

  25. they're puzzled about how Jesus got here,

  26. and they ask him,

  27. Teacher, when did you get here?

  28. And what does Jesus say in response?

  29. Let's just hit the pause button for a moment here.

  30. What's the true answer to this question?

  31. Jesus could have looked them in the eye and said,

  32. I actually got here in the early hours of the morning

  33. after a leisurely stroll out on the lake.

  34. Even as the crowd asks this question,

  35. you can imagine the disciples thinking to themselves,

  36. like, oh boy,

  37. like, how is Jesus going to respond to this?

  38. They would never believe what happened last night out on the lake,

  39. even if all of us told them that this is what happened.

  40. Well, Jesus decides to simply not answer the question.

  41. And instead,

  42. he makes a statement that shifts the focus of this conversation

  43. onto the people themselves.

  44. In verse 26,

  45. he says,

  46. What is Jesus saying to them?

  47. Well, let's first notice the kind of statement that this is.

  48. Jesus is telling them why they have been looking for him.

  49. He's saying,

  50. You've been seeking me.

  51. You've been searching for me.

  52. Not for this reason,

  53. but for this reason.

  54. Have you ever had somebody tell you

  55. why you are doing something?

  56. Most of us probably have,

  57. and usually we don't appreciate it

  58. when someone tells us why we did something.

  59. I'm sure many of us have had that happen in a conversation

  60. where someone's telling us why we did something,

  61. or we almost would take it as an accusation.

  62. And perhaps they even assumed wrongly about us.

  63. And you're thinking or you're saying,

  64. That wasn't my motivation.

  65. That wasn't my reason.

  66. Who are you to tell me why I did that?

  67. Are you judging me?

  68. Are you claiming to know my inner thoughts and motivations?

  69. Most of the time,

  70. it's best not to assume that you know

  71. exactly why someone is doing something.

  72. There could be reasons you simply do not know.

  73. There could be reasons buried in that person's heart,

  74. or rooted in that person's past experiences.

  75. As Paul said to the Corinthians in his letter,

  76. 1 Corinthians 2 verse 11,

    1 Corinthians 2:11

  77. For who knows a person's thoughts

  78. except their own spirit within them?

  79. And this is kind of a side point here,

  80. but wouldn't it be wonderful if all of us just refused

  81. to assume that we know why other people do the things they do?

  82. And I'm talking to myself here as well.

  83. Think of how much less misunderstanding and conflict there would be

  84. if we just simply chose not to assume anything about other people's motives.

  85. Instead, maybe just ask the question.

  86. Ask them why they're doing what they're doing.

  87. The truth is,

  88. we really don't know other people's motivations,

  89. and we can guess at them,

  90. we can speculate,

  91. but at the end of the day,

  92. only they know

  93. why they are doing what they are doing.

  94. And this is pretty relevant today.

  95. I mean, here's one example.

  96. Many people assume that people are wearing masks

  97. because they're afraid of getting COVID.

  98. And yet some of those people

  99. would say to you that they are wearing them

  100. not because they're afraid of getting COVID,

  101. but because they care about you.

  102. They want to minimize the chance

  103. that they would spread it to you

  104. if they happen to have it.

  105. For that person, it's not fear.

  106. It's in fact kindness and love

  107. that motivates them to wear their mask.

  108. On the other side of the coin,

  109. some people might assume

  110. that if you're not wearing a mask,

  111. it's because you're angry at the government

  112. or because you don't care about the weak

  113. and the vulnerable in our community.

  114. And yet for some who aren't wearing masks,

  115. that's simply not true.

  116. Some people are just simply not wearing them

  117. because they genuinely don't believe

  118. that the masks help

  119. in preventing the spread of COVID.

  120. Now, I'm not here to try and settle the debate this morning

  121. on whether they work or not work or whatever.

  122. I just say this to illustrate

  123. how often we assume that we know exactly

  124. why people are doing what they're doing,

  125. and yet how easy it is for us to be wrong.

  126. And we do this all the time.

  127. We speculate on people's motives and thoughts,

  128. like why they're changing jobs,

  129. why they had a conflict with so-and-so,

  130. why they believe this or that,

  131. why they haven't been coming to church,

  132. why they just bought a new vehicle,

  133. why my kids are acting the way they are.

  134. Wouldn't it just be wonderful

  135. if we all just embraced this simple truth

  136. that Paul reminds us of?

  137. Who knows a person's thoughts

  138. except their own spirit within them?

  139. Back to Jesus.

  140. Jesus is saying the kind of thing here

  141. that ordinarily we shouldn't say to one another.

  142. And notice how he says it.

  143. He doesn't say, you know what,

  144. I think that the reason you're looking for me

  145. is not this, but this.

  146. No, he states it very matter-of-factly.

  147. He says, truly, truly, I say to you,

  148. the reason you're looking for me

  149. is not this, but this.

  150. He's claiming to know the truth

  151. of what's going on in their inner thoughts

  152. and motivations.

  153. Coming from anyone else,

  154. this would probably be an immediate turn-off,

  155. and maybe some people were turned off

  156. when they heard Jesus say something like this.

  157. But with Jesus, it's different.

  158. He's already demonstrated repeatedly

  159. that he knows things about people

  160. that no ordinary person could know.

  161. We saw it with Nathaniel.

  162. We saw it with the Samaritan woman at the well.

  163. The disciples witnessed this kind of thing

  164. repeatedly at the first Passover festival

  165. that they went to with him.

  166. Remember back in John chapter 2,

    John 2 chapter mention

  167. where John said this,

  168. Jesus would not entrust himself to the crowd

  169. that saw his signs,

  170. for he knew all people.

  171. He did not need any testimony about men,

  172. mankind, for he knew what was in each person.

  173. Amazingly, in all these instances,

  174. the disciples have seen that Jesus has been correct

  175. about people,

  176. about their inner motivations

  177. and thoughts and reasons.

  178. He's not just guessing or speculating.

  179. He's not assuming things

  180. that he doesn't know to be true.

  181. Somehow he has divine knowledge.

  182. And he actually knows the things

  183. that God alone knows about people.

  184. This is the kind of thing that's going on here.

  185. Again, in the passage we're looking at this morning,

  186. Jesus is telling these people

  187. that he knows what's really going on

  188. inside their hearts.

  189. He knows why they're really going to all this trouble

  190. to come all the way back across the lake

  191. and hunt him down and follow him around.

  192. So now let's look at the reasons Jesus gives.

  193. Verse 26.

  194. Jesus answered,

  195. You are looking for me

  196. not because you saw the signs I performed,

  197. but because you ate the loaves and had your fill.

  198. Do not work for food that spoils,

  199. but for food that endures to eternal life.

  200. So according to Jesus,

  201. why are they following him?

  202. What's the real reason?

  203. And what's the problem with their motivation?

  204. You're looking for me

  205. because you ate the loaves and had your fill

  206. and not because you saw the signs.

  207. Do not work for food that spoils,

  208. but work for food that endures to eternal life.

  209. Now at first glance,

  210. and this is kind of what I was thinking at first,

  211. we might think that these people care more about getting more free food

  212. than they do about the miracle that Jesus did.

  213. It kind of sounds that way a little bit.

  214. You guys came all the way across the lake

  215. because you got a free meal.

  216. Don't wear yourself out for food that spoils.

  217. But the more I reflected on this and thought about that,

  218. it just didn't make sense.

  219. Like how could people really be more excited

  220. about getting some free food

  221. than about the fact that Jesus whipped this meal

  222. for 5,000 people out of almost seemingly nowhere?

  223. And we heard two weeks ago

  224. that at least some of them started to think

  225. that he was the prophet or the Messiah

  226. and they wanted to make him king.

  227. So did they care more about getting more free food

  228. than the miracle?

  229. Were they just a bunch of lazy freeloaders and moochers?

  230. I don't think so.

  231. I think we get a clue about this

  232. from what Jesus tells them to do.

  233. He says,

  234. Do not work for food that spoils,

  235. but for food that endures to eternal life.

  236. A more literal translation of that

  237. would be something like this.

  238. Work not for food of the perishing sort,

  239. but for food of the lasting unto eternal life sort.

  240. As we reflect on these words,

  241. we begin to see that Jesus is giving them

  242. a larger principle of life.

  243. And he's using food as kind of the metaphor.

  244. I mean, what kind of food endures to eternal life?

  245. This is not ordinary food.

  246. This is a metaphor.

  247. And do not work for food that spoils.

  248. They're meant to apply this more generally,

  249. more broadly to their whole outlook.

  250. In other words,

  251. I don't think Jesus is saying,

  252. The reason that you're following me around

  253. is just to get more free food.

  254. Stop putting in all this effort

  255. to get more free food that doesn't last.

  256. I think Jesus is saying more than that.

  257. And I think the key,

  258. if I'm reading this right,

  259. is in,

  260. we see it a little bit in verse 26.

  261. You are looking for me,

  262. not because you saw the signs.

  263. The signs.

  264. Jesus refers to the things that he has been doing.

  265. Things like the feeding of the 5,000

  266. and healing people as signs.

  267. And a sign by definition

  268. is something that points to something.

  269. So what's the problem with their motivation?

  270. If I'm hearing Jesus right,

  271. it's that they're more excited

  272. about the miracle itself

  273. than they are about what it points to.

  274. They're thinking,

  275. and we can guess here,

  276. we don't know for sure,

  277. but maybe something like,

  278. here's a guy who can multiply bread

  279. and they're not going to do it.

  280. Come on, everybody.

  281. Look at this.

  282. What's he going to do next?

  283. Isn't this awesome?

  284. They're all excited about the miracle

  285. and they probably should be,

  286. but the main point,

  287. it seems,

  288. is not the miracle itself,

  289. but what the miracle points to.

  290. It's a sign.

  291. It seems that these particular people

  292. are going to such lengths

  293. to follow Jesus

  294. because they want to be,

  295. we might say,

  296. sensationalized.

  297. They want to see more of the same.

  298. They want to be wowed

  299. by things like this,

  300. this meal that they had.

  301. And so it seems that

  302. Jesus is saying

  303. that the feeding of the 5,000

  304. was not something that he did

  305. just to fill the stomachs of people.

  306. God the Father

  307. had given him that work,

  308. that miracle to do

  309. as a sign.

  310. And signs are meant

  311. to tell us something.

  312. They're meant to point to something.

  313. And it was a spectacular sign.

  314. It was something

  315. impressive.

  316. Give a bit of an example here.

  317. I mean, imagine you're,

  318. happened to be in Madrid,

  319. Spain.

  320. You're driving around

  321. and you see this

  322. on the side of a building.

  323. That's a pretty big sign.

  324. They actually broke

  325. the Guinness Book of World Records

  326. for the largest billboard

  327. back in 2018.

  328. The thing is,

  329. the size of 20 tennis courts.

  330. It covers most of this huge building.

  331. And I don't know,

  332. I kind of like it.

  333. Even how the tree branches

  334. kind of go in between the windows.

  335. I mean, imagine how much time

  336. it took just to put that up

  337. and to take it down,

  338. all the scaffolding.

  339. It's impressive.

  340. So impressive,

  341. you might even take

  342. a slight detour

  343. on your way home

  344. just to show your kids.

  345. Now imagine that

  346. the next day

  347. after you see this billboard,

  348. you're at work

  349. and it comes up

  350. in conversation

  351. and you're talking

  352. to someone about it

  353. and someone at some point

  354. just says,

  355. so?

  356. Are you going to buy one?

  357. And you're kind of like,

  358. what are you talking about?

  359. Buy one what?

  360. Well, a Ford EcoSport.

  361. Oh, well,

  362. I wasn't even really

  363. thinking about that.

  364. I was just thinking about

  365. how awesome that sign is.

  366. Like, it's huge

  367. and it's so well done.

  368. I think that's a bit

  369. of an example,

  370. an illustration

  371. of what's happening here

  372. with the crowd

  373. and Jesus.

  374. They see the signs

  375. that he's doing

  376. and how spectacular they are,

  377. but they're more caught up

  378. in the excitement

  379. of the sign

  380. than what it points to.

  381. Like,

  382. hey everyone,

  383. here's a guy

  384. who can make food appear

  385. out of thin air.

  386. We saw it.

  387. We ate it

  388. as much as we wanted.

  389. Come on,

  390. let's go see

  391. what he'll do next.

  392. Maybe next time

  393. he'll make something

  394. even more awesome

  395. than that.

  396. Who knows?

  397. Maybe if we stick

  398. with him long enough,

  399. it'll be like

  400. that Oprah episode

  401. where every guest

  402. received a brand new car

  403. worth 30,000 bucks

  404. for free.

  405. We don't know exactly

  406. what they're thinking,

  407. but it seems

  408. that this is kind of

  409. along the lines

  410. of what they're thinking.

  411. They're missing the point.

  412. The key contrast,

  413. I think,

  414. comes in what Jesus says

  415. in verse 27.

  416. Do not work

  417. for food that spoils,

  418. but for food

  419. that endures

  420. to eternal life.

  421. Again,

  422. the more literal,

  423. work not for food

  424. of the perishing sort,

  425. but for food

  426. of the lasting

  427. unto eternal life sort.

  428. They're more excited

  429. about the bread

  430. than the reality

  431. that the bread points to.

  432. I think Jesus

  433. is saying something

  434. to the effect of

  435. the physical bread

  436. that I made

  437. is not the point.

  438. Don't put in all this effort

  439. to follow me around

  440. just to see more things

  441. like that.

  442. Where's the bread

  443. that you ate now?

  444. It's gone.

  445. It doesn't last.

  446. It's a perishable thing.

  447. It's either consumed

  448. or it spoils.

  449. No,

  450. the point of the miracle

  451. is that you would look for

  452. and seek after

  453. the food

  454. that doesn't perish.

  455. The special provision

  456. of God

  457. that lasts,

  458. that never goes bad,

  459. that there's always

  460. more of,

  461. the special food

  462. or provision of God

  463. that when you eat

  464. of it,

  465. it gives you

  466. not just life

  467. for another few days,

  468. but life

  469. for endless days.

  470. And it might be here

  471. that we're starting

  472. to remember back

  473. to what Jesus said

  474. to the woman

  475. at the well

  476. where he again

  477. used a familiar thing

  478. like water,

  479. food,

  480. water,

  481. to describe

  482. a much greater thing.

  483. He said to her,

  484. whoever drinks

  485. the water I give them

  486. will never thirst.

  487. Indeed,

  488. the water I give them

  489. will become

  490. in them

  491. a spring of water

  492. welling up

  493. to eternal life.

  494. It's as though

  495. Jesus is saying,

  496. I'm here to offer you

  497. more

  498. than just

  499. a spectacular show,

  500. more than just

  501. some material blessings,

  502. more than just

  503. some things

  504. that will eventually

  505. be consumed

  506. or spent

  507. or wear out

  508. or lost

  509. when you die.

  510. I'm here to offer you

  511. the food and water,

  512. the most essential

  513. needs

  514. of your soul,

  515. a special provision

  516. of God

  517. so that you might

  518. truly live

  519. forever.

  520. This is the reality

  521. that the sign

  522. of the feeding

  523. of the 5,000

  524. points to.

  525. If you're going

  526. to put in the effort

  527. like you've been

  528. putting in

  529. to follow me around,

  530. do it for this reason.

  531. Do it to get

  532. this food

  533. that lasts

  534. into life eternal.

  535. So you can imagine

  536. at this point

  537. that Jesus has

  538. their attention,

  539. that there's no

  540. shortage of questions

  541. rising up

  542. in their minds

  543. like,

  544. well,

  545. what kind of food

  546. are you talking

  547. about, Jesus?

  548. What sort of food

  549. lasts into

  550. eternal life?

  551. we've never

  552. heard of that

  553. before.

  554. What are you

  555. saying?

  556. Are you talking

  557. about a food

  558. that we eat

  559. and then we

  560. live forever?

  561. Is it a food

  562. that,

  563. like,

  564. what are you

  565. talking about?

  566. Is it literal

  567. food?

  568. Kind of like

  569. the fruit

  570. of the tree

  571. of life?

  572. Or are you

  573. just speaking

  574. metaphorically?

  575. What is this

  576. food and where

  577. do we get it?

  578. Where does it

  579. come from?

  580. Jesus answers

  581. one of these

  582. questions immediately,

  583. even before they

  584. ask,

  585. where does this

  586. lasting food

  587. come from?

  588. He says,

  589. do not work

  590. for food

  591. that spoils,

  592. but for food

  593. that endures

  594. to eternal life,

  595. which the

  596. Son of Man

  597. will give you.

  598. Which the

  599. Son of Man

  600. will give you.

  601. So where does

  602. it come from?

  603. It comes from

  604. the Son of Man.

  605. And we won't

  606. look at all the

  607. passages today,

  608. but there's

  609. many places

  610. where it's

  611. just obvious

  612. that when

  613. Jesus says

  614. the Son of Man,

  615. he's referring

  616. to himself.

  617. In other words,

  618. you get this

  619. food that

  620. endures to

  621. life eternal

  622. from me.

  623. I will give it

  624. to you.

  625. It's quite the

  626. claim.

  627. It's quite an

  628. offer.

  629. And then

  630. Jesus throws in

  631. this little

  632. statement at

  633. the end of

  634. verse 27,

  635. which the

  636. Son of Man

  637. will give you,

  638. for on him

  639. God has

  640. placed his

  641. seal of

  642. approval.

  643. Literally,

  644. for God the

  645. Father has

  646. sealed this

  647. one,

  648. referring to the

  649. Son of Man.

  650. What does that

  651. mean?

  652. There's a couple

  653. different ways that

  654. the word sealed

  655. can be used,

  656. but the way that

  657. makes the most

  658. sense here is

  659. like the seal,

  660. like a wax seal.

  661. Back in the day,

  662. it was common for

  663. them to use seals.

  664. They had a stamp

  665. or sometimes even

  666. a ring that they

  667. would, it had a

  668. detailed pattern on

  669. it.

  670. It was unique to

  671. the family that

  672. had it or the

  673. town that used it,

  674. and they would

  675. press it into

  676. hot wax or

  677. clay to

  678. authenticate

  679. whatever the

  680. seal was on,

  681. to show that

  682. this is the

  683. real deal.

  684. This letter

  685. really came from

  686. me.

  687. This license is

  688. authentic.

  689. It has been

  690. issued by the

  691. town officials.

  692. You may still

  693. see a seal of

  694. sorts today if

  695. you look back on

  696. your high school

  697. diploma.

  698. Gold sticker

  699. kind of thing

  700. with detail and

  701. kind of impressions

  702. in it.

  703. It's there at

  704. least historically

  705. to prove that

  706. your diploma

  707. paper is

  708. authentic.

  709. So what is

  710. Jesus saying

  711. when he says

  712. for God the

  713. Father has

  714. sealed the

  715. Son of Man?

  716. He's saying

  717. that God the

  718. Father has

  719. placed his

  720. seal, his

  721. mark of

  722. authenticity

  723. upon the

  724. Son of Man.

  725. Literally for

  726. Jesus, upon

  727. me.

  728. So that we

  729. would know

  730. that he is

  731. not just a

  732. Son of Man

  733. but the

  734. Son of Man.

  735. The one who

  736. really can

  737. give this

  738. food which

  739. lasts unto

  740. eternal life.

  741. God hasn't

  742. just left us

  743. to guess or

  744. to speculate.

  745. He's made it

  746. clear.

  747. He's put his

  748. own unique

  749. seal, mark,

  750. or sign

  751. upon him.

  752. And what

  753. is the

  754. clear sign

  755. or mark

  756. or seal?

  757. Well, Jesus

  758. has already

  759. mentioned the

  760. signs he

  761. has been

  762. doing in

  763. this conversation.

  764. So I would

  765. suggest that the

  766. seal or mark

  767. of authenticity

  768. is the signs

  769. which the

  770. Father has

  771. given Jesus

  772. to do.

  773. Things which

  774. are impossible

  775. for any

  776. ordinary

  777. Son of Man

  778. to do.

  779. God has

  780. set apart

  781. the Son of Man,

  782. the one that

  783. was promised,

  784. the glorious

  785. one by giving

  786. him special

  787. works or

  788. signs to do.

  789. This is

  790. similar to

  791. what Jesus

  792. said to the

  793. religious leaders

  794. back in

  795. Jerusalem.

  796. John 5,

  797. 36,

  798. for the works

  799. that the

  800. Father has

  801. given me to

  802. finish,

  803. the very

  804. works that

  805. I am doing

  806. testify that

  807. the Father

  808. has sent

  809. me.

  810. And so I

  811. think they

  812. are the

  813. seal,

  814. they are the

  815. distinguishing

  816. mark upon

  817. Jesus that

  818. helps us

  819. to identify

  820. him as

  821. the Son

  822. of Man

  823. and give

  824. us confidence

  825. that yes,

  826. he really

  827. can give us

  828. this food

  829. which lasts

  830. to eternal

  831. life.

  832. At this

  833. point in the

  834. conversation,

  835. the crowd

  836. asks a

  837. question.

  838. Verse 28,

  839. then they

  840. asked him,

  841. what must

  842. we do

  843. to do

  844. the works

  845. God requires?

  846. Jesus answered,

  847. the work

  848. of God

  849. is this,

  850. to believe

  851. in the

  852. one he

  853. has sent.

  854. Now there's

  855. some translation

  856. issues here.

  857. Literally,

  858. it's what

  859. must we do

  860. to work

  861. the works

  862. of God?

  863. And Jesus'

  864. answer is

  865. literally,

  866. the work

  867. of God

  868. is this,

  869. that you

  870. believe in

  871. the one

  872. he has

  873. sent.

  874. Now I

  875. don't want

  876. to get

  877. into the

  878. whole

  879. Calvinism

  880. and Arminianism

  881. debate here.

  882. Some people

  883. point to this

  884. passage to

  885. make the

  886. point that

  887. even our

  888. believing is

  889. a work of

  890. God.

  891. It's something

  892. that he

  893. does in

  894. us.

  895. If that's

  896. what Jesus

  897. means,

  898. then he's

  899. not really

  900. answering the

  901. question of

  902. the people

  903. the way

  904. that they

  905. asked it.

  906. And sometimes

  907. Jesus does

  908. that.

  909. Sometimes he

  910. doesn't answer

  911. the question

  912. the way that

  913. it was

  914. asked.

  915. But the

  916. overall flow

  917. in the sense

  918. of this

  919. question and

  920. this answer,

  921. at least to

  922. me, I

  923. think Jesus

  924. is saying

  925. the work

  926. of God

  927. or the

  928. work God

  929. requires,

  930. the work

  931. he wants

  932. you to

  933. do is

  934. that you

  935. believe in

  936. the one

  937. he has

  938. sent.

  939. Seems to

  940. be the

  941. logical flow

  942. of the

  943. passage here.

  944. Jesus has

  945. told them,

  946. don't work

  947. for this,

  948. work for

  949. this.

  950. What do

  951. we need

  952. to do to

  953. work the

  954. works that

  955. God requires?

  956. requires,

  957. this is

  958. the work

  959. that God

  960. requires.

  961. What is

  962. it?

  963. What is

  964. the thing

  965. that God

  966. wants us

  967. to do,

  968. that God

  969. wants you

  970. to do?

  971. Very

  972. simply,

  973. believe in

  974. the one

  975. he sent,

  976. is what

  977. Jesus says.

  978. It's kind

  979. of a strange

  980. answer.

  981. You can

  982. kind of

  983. imagine that

  984. there might

  985. be some

  986. thinking like,

  987. that's it?

  988. Like,

  989. isn't there

  990. more?

  991. I mean,

  992. when it

  993. comes to

  994. food,

  995. putting perishable

  996. food on the

  997. table,

  998. like,

  999. we go to

  1000. work,

  1001. and we're

  1002. going to

  1003. get this

  1004. lasting food

  1005. that never

  1006. spoils

  1007. just by

  1008. believing?

  1009. think?

  1010. I think

  1011. Jesus wants

  1012. to,

  1013. you know,

  1014. make it

  1015. clear that

  1016. there is

  1017. no earning

  1018. this food.

  1019. You don't

  1020. go to

  1021. work to

  1022. put this

  1023. food on

  1024. the table.

  1025. He said

  1026. already,

  1027. I will

  1028. give it

  1029. to you,

  1030. which the

  1031. Son of

  1032. Man will

  1033. give you.

  1034. I don't

  1035. know what

  1036. some of

  1037. them were

  1038. expecting,

  1039. maybe a

  1040. checklist,

  1041. maybe a

  1042. list of

  1043. commands,

  1044. maybe a

  1045. new contract

  1046. position in

  1047. Jesus'

  1048. crusade.

  1049. food,

  1050. I don't

  1051. know,

  1052. but Jesus

  1053. doesn't give

  1054. them any

  1055. hint that

  1056. this food,

  1057. this lasting

  1058. food can be

  1059. bought or

  1060. earned.

  1061. It's not

  1062. something that

  1063. he is selling,

  1064. it's not

  1065. something that

  1066. he's offering

  1067. in exchange

  1068. for a

  1069. life of

  1070. good works.

  1071. He says,

  1072. which the

  1073. Son of

  1074. Man will

  1075. give to

  1076. you.

  1077. What do

  1078. we do to

  1079. get it?

  1080. Believe

  1081. the one

  1082. he has

  1083. sent.

  1084. So simple.

  1085. And yet

  1086. even that

  1087. statement

  1088. right there

  1089. is so

  1090. pregnant.

  1091. Jesus again

  1092. is holding

  1093. up the

  1094. mirror to

  1095. them.

  1096. He's

  1097. saying it,

  1098. I think

  1099. it's implied,

  1100. because they

  1101. don't believe

  1102. him.

  1103. I'm calling

  1104. you again,

  1105. I'm inviting

  1106. you again,

  1107. believe in

  1108. me,

  1109. believe that

  1110. I am the

  1111. one that

  1112. God has

  1113. sent.

  1114. Why is he

  1115. saying it?

  1116. Because they

  1117. don't believe,

  1118. many of

  1119. them.

  1120. And we'll

  1121. continue the

  1122. conversation

  1123. next Sunday.

  1124. But what is

  1125. God saying

  1126. to us here

  1127. this morning

  1128. in all this?

  1129. There's so many

  1130. places that this

  1131. could hit home

  1132. for us today.

  1133. the first

  1134. thing that we

  1135. saw was how

  1136. Jesus challenged

  1137. their very

  1138. motives for

  1139. following him

  1140. that day.

  1141. You guys came

  1142. all the way

  1143. across the

  1144. lake for

  1145. the wrong

  1146. reason.

  1147. You were

  1148. more excited

  1149. about the

  1150. signs themselves

  1151. than the

  1152. reality that

  1153. they point

  1154. to.

  1155. There's a

  1156. question in

  1157. there.

  1158. What are

  1159. your motives

  1160. for following

  1161. Jesus?

  1162. Do you

  1163. know that

  1164. Jesus knows

  1165. the real

  1166. reasons?

  1167. Do you

  1168. know that

  1169. he knows

  1170. what's going

  1171. on in

  1172. your thoughts,

  1173. in your

  1174. heart?

  1175. Do you

  1176. know that

  1177. he sees

  1178. through the

  1179. face that

  1180. we so

  1181. often put

  1182. on for

  1183. other people

  1184. that he

  1185. sees the

  1186. real you?

  1187. If he

  1188. were standing

  1189. up at the

  1190. front today

  1191. instead of

  1192. me,

  1193. do you

  1194. think he

  1195. would challenge

  1196. or correct

  1197. our motives

  1198. for following

  1199. him?

  1200. I think

  1201. he would.

  1202. And not

  1203. because he

  1204. wants to

  1205. stir up a

  1206. good fight,

  1207. but because

  1208. he loves

  1209. us.

  1210. He cares

  1211. about us.

  1212. He wants

  1213. us to

  1214. follow him

  1215. for the

  1216. right reasons,

  1217. to come to

  1218. church on

  1219. Sunday for

  1220. the right

  1221. reasons,

  1222. to serve

  1223. in the

  1224. church and

  1225. in our

  1226. community for

  1227. the right

  1228. reasons,

  1229. to give

  1230. generously to

  1231. people in

  1232. need for

  1233. the right

  1234. reasons.

  1235. He's not

  1236. just looking

  1237. for a crowd

  1238. to cheer him

  1239. on or a

  1240. group of

  1241. fans to

  1242. enjoy the

  1243. show of

  1244. his miracles

  1245. and hoot

  1246. and holler

  1247. whenever he

  1248. sticks it to

  1249. the Pharisees.

  1250. Speaking of

  1251. motivations,

  1252. how about all

  1253. this COVID

  1254. stuff?

  1255. Do you

  1256. think Jesus

  1257. would have

  1258. some things

  1259. to say to

  1260. us about

  1261. our attitudes

  1262. and motives,

  1263. even our

  1264. behaviors when

  1265. it comes to

  1266. COVID?

  1267. I think so.

  1268. I felt

  1269. convicted about

  1270. it anyway.

  1271. the second

  1272. thing we

  1273. saw was

  1274. the misplaced

  1275. focus of

  1276. the crowd.

  1277. There's a

  1278. question there

  1279. too.

  1280. Are we

  1281. more excited

  1282. about the

  1283. signs that

  1284. Jesus did

  1285. than with

  1286. the greater

  1287. realities that

  1288. they point

  1289. to?

  1290. Are we

  1291. more enamored

  1292. with the

  1293. miracles

  1294. themselves

  1295. than with

  1296. the man

  1297. who did

  1298. them?

  1299. Now,

  1300. I know

  1301. most of us

  1302. here are

  1303. not into

  1304. sensationalism.

  1305. we're not

  1306. really that

  1307. kind of

  1308. group that

  1309. are chasing

  1310. after miracles,

  1311. but increasingly

  1312. in our

  1313. culture,

  1314. we are being

  1315. taught that

  1316. we need to

  1317. invest deeply

  1318. in the

  1319. things that

  1320. entertain us

  1321. most.

  1322. We're being

  1323. told that we

  1324. are consumers

  1325. and we need

  1326. to weigh

  1327. carefully what

  1328. we buy into

  1329. because it's

  1330. all about what

  1331. we can get

  1332. out of it.

  1333. And this

  1334. attitude creeps

  1335. into the

  1336. church as

  1337. well.

  1338. For a long

  1339. time, this

  1340. hour of

  1341. church on

  1342. Sunday morning

  1343. has been

  1344. called a

  1345. worship service.

  1346. A service.

  1347. The idea is

  1348. that you

  1349. come here

  1350. to serve,

  1351. to serve up

  1352. worship to

  1353. God.

  1354. I'll be

  1355. honest,

  1356. sometimes when

  1357. I'm writing

  1358. that weekly

  1359. email, I

  1360. feel a little

  1361. tempted to

  1362. just take

  1363. that word

  1364. service out

  1365. out.

  1366. Because I

  1367. know that

  1368. many in

  1369. their hearts

  1370. don't want

  1371. to come to

  1372. church to

  1373. give a

  1374. service to

  1375. God.

  1376. They want

  1377. to come to

  1378. church to

  1379. get something

  1380. from Him,

  1381. an experience,

  1382. a blessing.

  1383. And we see

  1384. this often in

  1385. the reasons why

  1386. people leave

  1387. a church or

  1388. shop around

  1389. for another

  1390. church.

  1391. The church

  1392. didn't have

  1393. this or

  1394. that or

  1395. the music

  1396. wasn't to

  1397. my liking

  1398. or the

  1399. pastor's

  1400. preaching was

  1401. biblical,

  1402. yeah, but

  1403. it wasn't

  1404. really to

  1405. my tastes.

  1406. Are we

  1407. looking to

  1408. be entertained

  1409. on Sunday?

  1410. Are we

  1411. into church

  1412. only if it

  1413. caters to

  1414. our preferences

  1415. and tastes?

  1416. Only if it

  1417. sounds and

  1418. feels the

  1419. way we

  1420. like?

  1421. Following

  1422. Jesus and

  1423. being the

  1424. church is

  1425. not about

  1426. being

  1427. entertained.

  1428. It's about

  1429. Jesus, the

  1430. Son of Man

  1431. and the

  1432. Son of God

  1433. who we

  1434. love and

  1435. adore.

  1436. And we'll

  1437. give Him the

  1438. best offering

  1439. of praise that

  1440. we can

  1441. whenever we

  1442. meet with

  1443. whatever we've

  1444. got.

  1445. It doesn't

  1446. matter if it

  1447. doesn't sound

  1448. polished or

  1449. professional or

  1450. entertaining or

  1451. if we miss a

  1452. chord or sing

  1453. the wrong note.

  1454. The Lord knows

  1455. what we have to

  1456. give and what

  1457. we don't.

  1458. The miracles were

  1459. meant not to

  1460. entertain us.

  1461. They were meant

  1462. to point to the

  1463. man who did

  1464. them and the

  1465. Father who sent

  1466. him.

  1467. And so does

  1468. my attitude

  1469. towards church,

  1470. towards following

  1471. Jesus need an

  1472. adjustment?

  1473. What about for

  1474. my kids?

  1475. Am I helping

  1476. them?

  1477. My grandkids?

  1478. I don't have

  1479. any but maybe

  1480. you do.

  1481. Am I encouraging

  1482. them to follow

  1483. Jesus simply for

  1484. who He is and

  1485. what He has

  1486. promised?

  1487. Another thing

  1488. we see here is

  1489. a clear warning.

  1490. against spending

  1491. our efforts

  1492. mainly on stuff

  1493. that doesn't

  1494. last and wears

  1495. out.

  1496. The stuff of

  1497. this world.

  1498. Maybe some of

  1499. you as we

  1500. looked at that

  1501. verse heard

  1502. these words in

  1503. the back of

  1504. your mind.

  1505. Do not store

  1506. up for yourselves

  1507. treasures on

  1508. earth where

  1509. moth and

  1510. vermin destroy

  1511. and where thieves

  1512. break in and

  1513. steal but store

  1514. up for yourselves

  1515. treasures in

  1516. heaven.

  1517. Sounds a lot

  1518. like do not

  1519. work for food

  1520. that spoils

  1521. but for food

  1522. that lasts

  1523. unto eternal

  1524. life.

  1525. Jesus said

  1526. at one time

  1527. what good is

  1528. it for someone

  1529. to gain the

  1530. whole world

  1531. and yet forfeit

  1532. their soul?

  1533. what's your main

  1534. goal in life

  1535. right now?

  1536. What's your

  1537. mission?

  1538. Is it

  1539. measured in

  1540. earthly

  1541. success?

  1542. In the

  1543. acquiring of

  1544. some certain

  1545. nice to have

  1546. things that

  1547. when I get

  1548. those things

  1549. my life's

  1550. going to be

  1551. good.

  1552. My life's

  1553. going to be

  1554. better.

  1555. I'll be

  1556. comfortable.

  1557. I think

  1558. Jesus wants

  1559. us to set

  1560. our aim

  1561. on the

  1562. things of

  1563. heaven.

  1564. On things

  1565. that last

  1566. forever.

  1567. On the

  1568. true needs

  1569. of our

  1570. souls and

  1571. on the

  1572. souls of

  1573. other

  1574. people.

  1575. Do my

  1576. overall goals

  1577. and priorities

  1578. in life

  1579. right now

  1580. need an

  1581. adjustment?

  1582. Finally

  1583. where does all

  1584. this hit us

  1585. as we

  1586. prepare to

  1587. some of

  1588. us

  1589. gather with

  1590. family

  1591. and have

  1592. a delicious

  1593. meal with

  1594. perishable

  1595. food?

  1596. Maybe with

  1597. family and

  1598. friends this

  1599. Thanksgiving?

  1600. I don't know

  1601. how all of

  1602. you plan to

  1603. mark Thanksgiving

  1604. this year.

  1605. I've asked a

  1606. couple of

  1607. you.

  1608. It's a

  1609. strange year.

  1610. That might

  1611. factor into

  1612. it or change

  1613. it for some

  1614. of you.

  1615. Some of

  1616. you may not

  1617. be having

  1618. a big meal

  1619. like you

  1620. have in

  1621. the past

  1622. with family

  1623. or friends.

  1624. And so

  1625. if there's

  1626. anything we

  1627. take from

  1628. Jesus'

  1629. words about

  1630. food,

  1631. I hope

  1632. we know

  1633. that it's

  1634. not about

  1635. the food.

  1636. It's not.

  1637. Thanksgiving

  1638. is about

  1639. much more.

  1640. Or maybe

  1641. you do

  1642. have plans

  1643. for a

  1644. special meal

  1645. later this

  1646. afternoon

  1647. or tomorrow.

  1648. Let's not

  1649. forget to

  1650. look with

  1651. our families

  1652. as we

  1653. gather beyond

  1654. the physical

  1655. food and

  1656. having our

  1657. fill.

  1658. To the

  1659. God who

  1660. has so

  1661. generously

  1662. and graciously

  1663. given us

  1664. everything

  1665. good that

  1666. we have.

  1667. Who's not

  1668. only provided

  1669. us with

  1670. good perishable

  1671. food to

  1672. eat,

  1673. but has

  1674. given us

  1675. his son.

  1676. And through

  1677. him the

  1678. food that

  1679. lasts unto

  1680. eternal life.

  1681. A gift that

  1682. we receive

  1683. simply by

  1684. believing.

  1685. we can

  1686. thank God

  1687. for the

  1688. good food

  1689. that we

  1690. enjoy today

  1691. and tomorrow

  1692. if we are

  1693. having a

  1694. celebration

  1695. meal.

  1696. But we

  1697. have so

  1698. much more

  1699. than earthly

  1700. food to

  1701. be thankful

  1702. for.

  1703. Let's

  1704. pray.

  1705. Lord Jesus,

  1706. we thank you

  1707. for speaking

  1708. these words

  1709. to the

  1710. crowd.

  1711. Lord,

  1712. Lord,

  1713. we admit

  1714. that maybe

  1715. these were

  1716. not the

  1717. words we

  1718. wanted to

  1719. hear from

  1720. you today,

  1721. but we

  1722. ask that you

  1723. would give us

  1724. ears to hear

  1725. and hearts

  1726. that are

  1727. willing to

  1728. respond.

  1729. Make those

  1730. adjustments that

  1731. we need in

  1732. our hearts.

  1733. Fix our

  1734. attitudes,

  1735. Lord,

  1736. where they're

  1737. wrong.

  1738. We confess

  1739. those things

  1740. to you.

  1741. Give us

  1742. the right

  1743. motives

  1744. and give

  1745. us a

  1746. proper

  1747. understanding

  1748. of what's

  1749. really going

  1750. on in

  1751. our lives.

  1752. Thank you

  1753. for all

  1754. the good

  1755. things you

  1756. have been

  1757. doing in

  1758. us, for

  1759. us, even

  1760. through us.

  1761. We pray

  1762. this in

  1763. Jesus' name.

  1764. Amen.
