  1. Bible, please open it up to John chapter 6. Some of you might be wondering, why are we

    John 6 chapter mention

  2. still in John chapter 6? Well, Jesus has a lot to say in John chapter 6, and so we don't

John 6 chapter mention John 6 chapter mention

  3. want to just rush past that too quickly. We want to take our time and listen to what Jesus

  4. is saying and really take it to heart. So let's remind ourselves of where we are in

  5. this conversation. Jesus is talking with a crowd of people, and many of this crowd were

  6. at the feeding of the 5,000 just yesterday, and this is quite the conversation. Jesus

  7. has urged them not to work for food that spoils, but for food that lasts. We heard Jesus tell

  8. them that God wants them to believe in the one that he has sent. We heard the crowd ask

  9. Jesus, do something amazing, do a sign, then we'll believe. Something like the miracle

  10. of the manna in the wilderness, maybe. We heard Jesus tell them that God is doing a similar

  11. kind of thing. Right now, he is giving you the true bread from heaven. We heard the crowd

  12. ask for this bread from heaven. And then we heard Jesus declare that he is the bread which

  13. God has sent down from heaven. Last Sunday, we heard the crowd grumbling about Jesus claiming

  14. to be from heaven. It's a pretty lofty claim to make, to be from heaven. And this morning,

  15. we're going to look a little more closely at another lofty claim of Jesus, or we might say

  16. a lofty promise, an amazing offer that Jesus is making to people here in this conversation.

  17. It all starts with Jesus' statement back up in verse 26 and 27.

  18. Very truly, he said, I tell you, you are looking for me not because you saw the signs I performed,

  19. but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. Do not work for food that spoils,

  20. but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you.

  21. If there's two words that really stand out in that directive that Jesus gives to them,

  22. it's the words eternal life. We all know that ordinary food gives life. If you don't eat,

  23. eventually you will die. We need food to live. And so in a sense, food is life-giving.

  24. And yet it seems as though Jesus is saying that there's a kind of food that is eternal life-giving.

  25. Like if you eat it, you will live forever.

  26. Now we don't know exactly what the people were thinking as they heard this.

  27. Perhaps some of them were thinking that that just sounds too good to be true.

  28. That there's this kind of food that when you eat it, you will live forever.

  29. To many today, it might sound very much like the stuff of mythology.

  30. I was reading this week about some Japanese mythology where apparently there's a story of a girl who came across a mermaid-like creature

  31. and ate the meat of that creature and became immortal.

  32. In both Greek and Norse mythology, it was believed that the gods and the goddesses, they were immortal.

  33. They could live forever because they were eating these golden apples or drinking this sweet drink called ambrosia.

  34. Even the phrase eternal life for many today is probably a trigger in their minds.

  35. Like as soon as they hear those words, eternal life or immortality, we must be talking about fantasy or mythology

  36. or something in the latest Marvel movie or television series.

  37. When's the last time you heard someone who doesn't believe in Jesus or frequent church gatherings use the phrase eternal life in everyday conversation?

  38. Probably not recently.

  39. And so I wonder if even as we as Christians sometimes might hesitate to say those words outside the church circle,

  40. maybe you've thought about it or had that come up in conversation and maybe you felt that.

  41. You know, if I say the words eternal life to them,

  42. am I going to be losing some credibility or respect in their eyes?

  43. But Jesus did not shy away from using this phrase.

  44. In fact, we've already seen Jesus use this phrase a few times up to this point in the Gospel of John.

  45. He first spoke of eternal life that we know of to Nicodemus.

  46. To Nicodemus, you'll remember that he said,

  47. But as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness,

  48. so the Son of Man must be lifted up,

  49. that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.

  50. He spoke of obtaining eternal life to the Samaritan woman at the well.

  51. He said to her,

  52. Sometime later, when Jesus was in Jerusalem,

  53. back in John chapter 5, verse 24,

    John 5:24

  54. we heard him saying to the religious leaders these words,

  55. Truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life

  56. and will not be judged, but is crossed over from death to life.

  57. So Jesus has already been speaking about eternal life,

  58. and he's been speaking of it as something that's very much attainable.

  59. He's not telling fantasy stories here,

  60. or talking about some ancient legend of somebody who ate or drank this or that

  61. and then suddenly became immortal.

  62. No, he speaks about eternal life as if it's real, attainable,

  63. and not just for those rare few who happen to stumble upon the secret,

  64. but for anyone, for all who will believe.

  65. To Nicodemus,

  66. So the Son of Man must be lifted up,

  67. that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.

  68. To the religious leaders,

  69. Whoever hears my word and believes has eternal life.

  70. Whoever.

  71. And now to the crowd that he's talking with,

  72. he makes it clear that eternal life is not just for

  73. one group of people.

  74. It's not just for that one fortunate person

  75. who happens to stumble into that hidden cave

  76. and find this secret chalice with this nectar of the gods in it.

  77. No.

  78. Chapter 6, verse 3,

  79. For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven

  80. and gives life to the world.

  81. Eternal life is for anyone who will believe.

  82. It's for the world.

  83. On the lips of Jesus,

  84. eternal life is no fairy tale.

  85. It's no legend.

  86. It's no fantasy.

  87. It's a real, attainable thing

  88. for all who hear the words of Jesus

  89. and believe.

  90. Those who truly believe him.

  91. It's quite a thing,

  92. as you think about it,

  93. to look someone in the eye

  94. and offer them

  95. eternal life.

  96. And let's not miss

  97. where this eternal life comes from.

  98. Jesus told the religious leaders

  99. back in chapter 5, verse 21,

  100. For just as the Father raises the dead

  101. and gives them life,

  102. even so the Son,

  103. this is Jesus referring to himself,

  104. the Son gives life

  105. to whom he is pleased to give it.

  106. So Jesus is not just someone

  107. who knows the secret way

  108. to eternal life.

  109. He himself is claiming

  110. to be the one who gives eternal life

  111. to people.

  112. That's the way Jesus has talked

  113. throughout this gospel.

  114. It's Jesus that must be lifted up,

  115. as we just read,

  116. so that whoever believes

  117. might have eternal life.

  118. It's Jesus who offers the woman

  119. at the well living water,

  120. which he says he has

  121. to give to her,

  122. which will result in eternal life.

  123. In this very conversation

  124. with the crowd here,

  125. Jesus tells them

  126. where the food

  127. that lasts to eternal life

  128. comes from.

  129. He says,

  130. which the Son of Man

  131. will give you.

  132. The very plain sense of all these

  133. is that Jesus is saying,

  134. you get eternal life

  135. from me.

  136. He's not just a spiritual guru

  137. who has found the way

  138. to become immortal.

  139. He himself has the power

  140. and the authority of God

  141. to give eternal life

  142. to people.

  143. And this is a big part

  144. of what this whole conversation

  145. about the bread of life

  146. is about.

  147. Just like you live

  148. a little longer

  149. by eating this ordinary

  150. earthly bread,

  151. Jesus has been saying

  152. in the same way,

  153. you can live forever

  154. by eating the special

  155. heavenly bread,

  156. the bread that God

  157. has given from heaven.

  158. And then we heard

  159. a couple weeks back

  160. as Jesus said it plain as day,

  161. I myself am

  162. the bread of life.

  163. In other words,

  164. eternal life

  165. doesn't just come

  166. from me

  167. as something external

  168. that I carry

  169. outside myself

  170. and give away

  171. to people.

  172. No.

  173. Eternal life

  174. comes through me

  175. and in me.

  176. Let's listen to the words

  177. of Jesus

  178. in verse 47.

  179. Very truly,

  180. I tell you,

  181. the one who believes

  182. has eternal life.

  183. I am the bread of life.

  184. Your ancestors ate the manna

  185. in the wilderness,

  186. yet they died.

  187. But here is the bread

  188. that comes down from heaven,

  189. which anyone may eat

  190. and not die.

  191. I am the living bread

  192. that came down from heaven.

  193. Whoever eats this bread

  194. will live forever.

  195. This bread is my flesh,

  196. which I will give

  197. for the life of the world.

  198. Now next Sunday,

  199. we'll find out

  200. how the crowd responded

  201. to these words.

  202. But for this morning,

  203. I want to focus

  204. on this offer of Jesus,

  205. this gift of Jesus,

  206. eternal life.

  207. Jesus has one more thing

  208. to say

  209. to make it clear

  210. what this eternal life

  211. refers to.

  212. In mythology

  213. and legends

  214. about immortality,

  215. you probably know

  216. how the story goes.

  217. There's some character

  218. who eats

  219. or drinks something

  220. or does something special

  221. that causes them

  222. to become immortal,

  223. to live forever.

  224. and generally,

  225. they are,

  226. from that point on,

  227. unable to die.

  228. It makes for some

  229. great fiction.

  230. It makes for some

  231. good movie plots

  232. as someone tries

  233. to go after

  234. that character

  235. who's immortal

  236. with whatever weapon

  237. they have

  238. only to find out

  239. that they simply

  240. cannot kill him.

  241. He's immortal.

  242. He's unable to die.

  243. It makes for some

  244. entertaining stories

  245. as we think of,

  246. you know,

  247. kind of the

  248. fantastic notion

  249. that some one person

  250. who has found

  251. this secret

  252. could have lived

  253. for centuries.

  254. They were there,

  255. that one character

  256. in the story,

  257. and fought as a young man

  258. in the First World War

  259. and they were there,

  260. a young man also,

  261. back in the days

  262. of Napoleon

  263. and then they're

  264. still here today

  265. in present day

  266. but nobody really

  267. knows their secret.

  268. Is this the kind

  269. of eternal life

  270. that Jesus is talking about?

  271. I think we all

  272. know the answer.

  273. It's not.

  274. He's not saying

  275. that we will never

  276. physically die

  277. here on earth

  278. kind of eternal life.

  279. Let's hear it

  280. from Jesus

  281. in his own words.

  282. John chapter 6

    John 6:38

  283. verse 38.

  284. For I have come down

  285. from heaven

  286. not to do my will

  287. but to do the will

  288. of him who sent me.

  289. And this is the will

  290. of him who sent me

  291. that I shall lose none

  292. of all those

  293. he has given me.

  294. And then here it is.

  295. But raise them up

  296. at the last day.

  297. That's the key phrase.

  298. But raise them up

  299. at the last day.

  300. I'm not saying

  301. that I'm here

  302. to give you

  303. immortality

  304. in your physical body

  305. right here

  306. right now

  307. such that you'll

  308. never die.

  309. No.

  310. The eternal life

  311. that I give

  312. when it comes

  313. to your body

  314. happens when I

  315. raise you up

  316. from the dead

  317. at the last day.

  318. And let's not move

  319. too quickly

  320. from this statement.

  321. Jesus wants us

  322. to hear these words.

  323. And we know this

  324. because he says

  325. this exact phrase

  326. almost word for word

  327. four times

  328. in this conversation.

  329. I will raise them up

  330. at the last day.

  331. He says it in verse 40

  332. again.

  333. For my father's will

  334. is that everyone

  335. who looks to the son

  336. and believes in him

  337. shall have eternal life.

  338. And I will raise them up

  339. at the last day.

  340. He says it in verse 44.

  341. No one can come to me

  342. unless the father

  343. who sent me

  344. draws them

  345. and I will raise them up

  346. at the last day.

  347. And he says it again

  348. in verse 54.

  349. Whoever eats my flesh

  350. and drinks my blood

  351. has eternal life.

  352. We'll talk about that

  353. next Sunday.

  354. I know that probably

  355. tweaks some of you.

  356. and I will raise them up

  357. at the last day.

  358. Four times he says it.

  359. I will raise them up

  360. at the last day.

  361. Which kind of brings us

  362. to this question.

  363. So when does

  364. eternal life begin?

  365. There's a sense in which

  366. eternal life begins

  367. now

  368. when we believe in Jesus

  369. because

  370. our status with God

  371. changes

  372. when we believe in Jesus.

  373. Our eternal destiny

  374. changes

  375. from

  376. death

  377. to life.

  378. In the words of Jesus

  379. we have crossed over

  380. from death

  381. to life.

  382. There's a spiritual

  383. element to it

  384. here and now.

  385. We come alive

  386. to God

  387. where we were dead

  388. to him before.

  389. God's spirit

  390. of life

  391. comes to live

  392. inside of us

  393. and joins us

  394. to Jesus himself

  395. so that we become

  396. one with Christ.

  397. We are in

  398. him.

  399. So there is a

  400. here and now

  401. aspect

  402. to eternal life.

  403. We could say

  404. in a very real sense

  405. that eternal life

  406. begins

  407. the moment

  408. that you truly

  409. believe in Jesus

  410. and are born again

  411. by the spirit

  412. of God.

  413. But there's also

  414. a very real sense

  415. in which eternal life

  416. does not begin

  417. fully

  418. until the last day

  419. when Jesus returns

  420. and raises us up

  421. from the dead

  422. to live forevermore

  423. never to die again.

  424. I will raise them up

  425. at the last day

  426. those who believe

  427. whoever believes

  428. in me.

  429. so what's the

  430. significance

  431. of this?

  432. I think it's

  433. important because

  434. we need to know

  435. that this good

  436. gift of eternal

  437. life

  438. is something

  439. that we can

  440. receive today

  441. in the present

  442. even as Jesus

  443. is speaking

  444. the words

  445. to people

  446. will they believe

  447. today?

  448. but the full glory

  449. of course

  450. of this gift

  451. awaits

  452. the last day

  453. when Jesus returns

  454. and as I was thinking

  455. about it this week

  456. I was imagining it

  457. like the gift

  458. of a brand new car

  459. from a father

  460. to his 13 year old son

  461. at Christmas.

  462. Can you imagine

  463. the delight on his face

  464. as he opens up

  465. a little box

  466. and inside

  467. are a set of keys

  468. to a brand new car

  469. that's now

  470. he's discovered

  471. is parked

  472. in the family garage

  473. and this gift

  474. doesn't come

  475. with any strings

  476. attached

  477. it's not his dad's

  478. or mom's

  479. to drive

  480. until he's

  481. old enough

  482. to drive it

  483. it's his

  484. it belongs

  485. to him

  486. he may have

  487. to wait

  488. until

  489. a future day

  490. when he's able

  491. to reach the pedals

  492. or a future day

  493. when he gets

  494. his driver's license

  495. to fully enjoy

  496. this gift

  497. but it belongs

  498. to him now

  499. and one day

  500. he will have

  501. the pleasure

  502. of backing it

  503. out of the garage

  504. and taking it

  505. for a spin

  506. for the first time

  507. eternal life

  508. is a gift

  509. like that

  510. a gift

  511. that we can

  512. receive today

  513. by believing

  514. in Jesus

  515. and yet a gift

  516. that we won't

  517. fully enjoy

  518. until the last day

  519. when Jesus

  520. comes

  521. and raises

  522. us up

  523. from the grave

  524. with the rest

  525. of our

  526. time this morning

  527. I want us

  528. to think about

  529. those words

  530. eternal life

  531. I've said them

  532. a lot

  533. we've probably

  534. heard them a lot

  535. as Christians

  536. even before

  537. this morning

  538. what do they

  539. mean

  540. life

  541. without end

  542. life

  543. that goes

  544. on forever

  545. life

  546. of infinite

  547. length

  548. days

  549. without

  550. number

  551. never

  552. to die

  553. again

  554. after the

  555. resurrection

  556. we could

  557. say it

  558. in a number

  559. of ways

  560. but so often

  561. I think

  562. as we hear

  563. those words

  564. eternal life

  565. it just kind

  566. of passes

  567. through our

  568. heads

  569. and doesn't

  570. really land

  571. in our

  572. hearts

  573. so how

  574. long

  575. is

  576. eternal

  577. how long

  578. is

  579. forever

  580. if life

  581. is eternal

  582. after we

  583. are raised

  584. up

  585. at the

  586. last day

  587. when will

  588. our bodies

  589. or our

  590. organs

  591. fail

  592. if life

  593. is eternal

  594. after the

  595. last day

  596. when will

  597. our ears

  598. stop hearing

  599. properly

  600. or our

  601. eyes stop

  602. seeing

  603. clearly

  604. or our

  605. joints

  606. wear out

  607. if life

  608. is eternal

  609. when will

  610. our hearts

  611. finally beat

  612. the last

  613. beat

  614. just give

  615. up because

  616. they've

  617. had too

  618. much mileage

  619. put on

  620. them

  621. if life

  622. is eternal

  623. when will

  624. we hear

  625. the number

  626. of days

  627. that we

  628. have left

  629. from the

  630. doctor

  631. because of

  632. sickness

  633. or disease

  634. cancer

  635. injury

  636. how long

  637. is

  638. forever

  639. there are

  640. some benefit

  641. for our

  642. imaginations

  643. to reading

  644. those fanciful

  645. stories about

  646. people who

  647. lived for

  648. a thousand

  649. years

  650. it gets

  651. us thinking

  652. what would

  653. it be like

  654. to live

  655. for a

  656. thousand

  657. years

  658. of unbroken

  659. life

  660. to love

  661. to have

  662. all kinds

  663. of family

  664. and friendships

  665. for a

  666. thousand

  667. years

  668. uninterrupted

  669. to grow

  670. in wisdom

  671. to learn

  672. new things

  673. year after

  674. year for

  675. a thousand

  676. years

  677. can you

  678. imagine

  679. that

  680. to have

  681. a life

  682. so full

  683. as the

  684. men

  685. did

  686. when the

  687. world was

  688. first created

  689. now take

  690. that and

  691. think about

  692. this

  693. how about

  694. ten thousand

  695. years

  696. can you

  697. imagine

  698. what it

  699. would be

  700. like to

  701. live for

  702. ten thousand

  703. years

  704. what it

  705. would have

  706. been like

  707. to live

  708. from the

  709. dawn of

  710. this

  711. world's

  712. creation

  713. up until

  714. this

  715. present

  716. day

  717. all in

  718. one

  719. continued

  720. span

  721. of life

  722. can you

  723. imagine

  724. that after

  725. ten thousand

  726. years

  727. you're still

  728. as young

  729. and strong

  730. and able

  731. as you

  732. were

  733. at the

  734. beginning

  735. can you

  736. imagine

  737. having all

  738. the time

  739. in the

  740. world to

  741. do all

  742. those good

  743. things that

  744. you otherwise

  745. just wouldn't

  746. get to do

  747. to read all

  748. those books

  749. to play

  750. to learn to

  751. play that

  752. instrument

  753. and become

  754. fully expressive

  755. in it and

  756. master it

  757. and in fact

  758. why just one

  759. instrument

  760. how about

  761. nine or

  762. ten

  763. a thousand

  764. years is

  765. plenty of

  766. time to

  767. master a

  768. whole bunch

  769. of them

  770. can you

  771. imagine

  772. what it

  773. would be

  774. like to

  775. live for

  776. ten thousand

  777. years

  778. of unbroken

  779. life and

  780. then when you

  781. come to the

  782. end of that

  783. to find out

  784. that you

  785. will live

  786. that span

  787. that length

  788. over and

  789. over and

  790. over again

  791. without end

  792. without aging

  793. as we know

  794. it without

  795. the body or

  796. the mind

  797. growing weak

  798. or frail

  799. or weary

  800. as time

  801. goes on

  802. without

  803. sickness

  804. without

  805. disease

  806. without

  807. death

  808. how long

  809. is forever

  810. I know

  811. some of you

  812. have been

  813. wondering what

  814. this string

  815. is all

  816. about

  817. this string

  818. every inch

  819. on it

  820. represents a

  821. hundred years

  822. and so if we

  823. start at the

  824. creation of the

  825. world by the

  826. most conservative

  827. accounts

  828. years

  829. you know

  830. we go

  831. along

  832. and we

  833. get to

  834. about here

  835. there's

  836. six thousand

  837. years

  838. that's kind

  839. of the

  840. most conservative

  841. estimate

  842. from

  843. Christians

  844. as to the

  845. age of the

  846. world

  847. but then some

  848. people have

  849. issue with

  850. the you know

  851. the gaps

  852. and the

  853. genealogies

  854. and stuff

  855. so let's

  856. add another

  857. four thousand

  858. years just

  859. for fun

  860. let's say

  861. that this

  862. is this

  863. is how long

  864. since the

  865. creation of

  866. the world

  867. till now

  868. there's your

  869. life

  870. right there

  871. a little

  872. blip

  873. I colored it

  874. red but you

  875. probably can't

  876. see it from

  877. here

  878. if you make

  879. it to a

  880. hundred years

  881. that's your

  882. life

  883. at some time

  884. a little bit

  885. down the line

  886. we don't know

  887. exactly when

  888. the day or

  889. the hour

  890. will be the

  891. last day

  892. that Jesus

  893. is talking

  894. about there

  895. when he will

  896. raise us

  897. up

  898. and then

  899. starts the

  900. full sense

  901. of eternal

  902. life

  903. and it

  904. goes on

  905. and it

  906. goes on

  907. and it

  908. goes on

  909. can you

  910. imagine

  911. living this

  912. full length

  913. of life

  914. that we

  915. know here

  916. over and

  917. over and

  918. over again

  919. this string

  920. the other

  921. end of it

  922. is out by

  923. the alley

  924. on the

  925. sidewalk

  926. outside the

  927. front doors

  928. of the

  929. church

  930. down by

  931. the alley

  932. represents

  933. a total

  934. of about

  935. 330,000

  936. years

  937. about

  938. 3,000

  939. ish

  940. of

  941. lifetimes

  942. of 100

  943. years

  944. but in

  945. reality

  946. there will

  947. be no

  948. end

  949. to that

  950. string

  951. it will

  952. just keep

  953. on going

  954. all the way

  955. around the

  956. world

  957. again and

  958. again and

  959. again

  960. forever

  961. forever

  962. that's

  963. how long

  964. eternal

  965. life

  966. is

  967. that's

  968. the kind

  969. of life

  970. that Jesus

  971. is offering

  972. to you

  973. and to me

  974. as an

  975. undeserved

  976. gift of

  977. grace

  978. and if

  979. that's

  980. what's in

  981. store for

  982. those who

  983. believe in

  984. Jesus

  985. then suddenly

  986. it makes a

  987. lot of

  988. sense when

  989. Jesus says

  990. do not

  991. work for

  992. food that

  993. spoils

  994. but for

  995. food which

  996. lasts

  997. unto eternal

  998. life

  999. don't spend

  1000. all of your

  1001. life so

  1002. focused in

  1003. everything you

  1004. do on

  1005. this when

  1006. there's all

  1007. of this

  1008. store up

  1009. treasure in

  1010. heaven not

  1011. on earth for

  1012. this little

  1013. blip here but

  1014. for all of

  1015. this seek

  1016. first his

  1017. kingdom said

  1018. Jesus and

  1019. when it

  1020. comes it's

  1021. going to

  1022. last forever

  1023. don't worry

  1024. about what

  1025. you need in

  1026. life your

  1027. food your

  1028. clothing all

  1029. that stuff

  1030. God's going

  1031. to look

  1032. after that

  1033. and take

  1034. care of

  1035. you

  1036. eternal

  1037. life

  1038. John

  1039. Newton had

  1040. it right

  1041. when he

  1042. penned those

  1043. famous words

  1044. when we've

  1045. been there

  1046. 10,000

  1047. years

  1048. bright

  1049. shining

  1050. as the

  1051. sun

  1052. we've no

  1053. less

  1054. days

  1055. to sing

  1056. God's

  1057. praise

  1058. than when

  1059. we'd first

  1060. begun

  1061. let's pray

  1062. father in

  1063. heaven

  1064. even just

  1065. to think

  1066. about the

  1067. magnitude of

  1068. that gift

  1069. blows us

  1070. away

  1071. we're not

  1072. worthy of

  1073. that

  1074. we don't

  1075. deserve

  1076. that

  1077. we hear

  1078. the

  1079. words that

  1080. you spoke

  1081. to

  1082. our

  1083. great

  1084. ancestor

  1085. the day

  1086. you eat

  1087. of it

  1088. you shall

  1089. surely

  1090. die

  1091. what

  1092. mercy

  1093. and what

  1094. grace

  1095. you've

  1096. given

  1097. us

  1098. I pray

  1099. and ask

  1100. that all

  1101. of us

  1102. would

  1103. believe

  1104. that we

  1105. would hear

  1106. the words

  1107. you are

  1108. speaking

  1109. and that

  1110. we would

  1111. receive

  1112. and believe

  1113. eternal

  1114. life

  1115. in Jesus

  1116. name

  1117. amen

  1118. to

  1119. sorrir
