  1. All right, so this is the point in our service where we open up the Word of God.

  2. This is our opportunity to hear what the Lord Jesus has said.

  3. We're going to be looking at His own words.

  4. And so I encourage you, if you have a Bible, to open it up to John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  5. This morning we're going to be looking at something that Jesus said that seems a little strange,

  6. at least at first.

  7. I know that we had said we would look at the response of the crowd to Jesus

  8. after He had said that the bread of life was His flesh,

  9. and whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life.

  10. We are going to get to that, but we're actually going to look at that next Sunday.

  11. It's a pretty wild thing that Jesus said.

  12. This morning we're going to look at something else that is strange that Jesus said

  13. that came up in this conversation in John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  14. So let's read it together, starting in verse 35.

  15. And maybe before I read it, I'll just say, you know,

  16. one of the things we're going to focus on a little bit in this is,

  17. what is Jesus' relationship to the Father?

  18. It's something that we've talked about a little before,

  19. but just maybe look into that as we read it,

  20. because we've heard these words before, but there's more here.

  21. So verse 35,

  22. Then Jesus declared,

  23. I am the bread of life.

  24. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry,

  25. and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.

  26. But as I told you, you have seen me,

  27. and still you do not believe.

  28. All those the Father gives me will come to me,

  29. and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.

  30. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will,

  31. but to do the will of him who sent me.

  32. And this is the will of him who sent me,

  33. that I shall lose none of all those he has given me,

  34. but raise them up at the last day.

  35. For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son

  36. and believes in him shall have eternal life,

  37. and I will raise them up at the last day.

  38. So there's a lot in here,

  39. but we're just going to focus on the relationship of Jesus

  40. with his Father.

  41. We've talked about some of the other things.

  42. Last Sunday we talked about eternal life.

  43. The Sunday before that we talked about Jesus' statement,

  44. I will raise them up at the last day.

  45. We want to focus in on this relationship

  46. that Jesus has with the Father.

  47. And we've heard a little bit about this already

  48. in the Gospel of John.

  49. We heard about it right at the beginning.

  50. In John 1, verse 14,

    John 1:14

  51. John described Jesus, this man,

  52. as the Son who came from the Father.

  53. A little bit later in verse 18,

  54. he said,

  55. No one has ever seen God,

  56. but the one and only Son,

  57. who is himself God,

  58. and is in closest relationship with the Father,

  59. has made him known.

  60. So there's this special relationship

  61. between Jesus, the Son,

  62. and his Father.

  63. We only see glimpses of it

  64. or mentions of it

  65. in the first part of Jesus' story.

  66. We heard Nathaniel make that declaration,

  67. Rabbi, you are the Son of God.

  68. But did Nathaniel really know

  69. what he was affirming?

  70. We saw it...

  71. We saw it when Jesus got to the temple in Jerusalem.

  72. He was flipping the tables

  73. on those who were selling.

  74. And he said,

  75. the temple,

  76. he referred to it as,

  77. my Father's house.

  78. But it doesn't seem that the people

  79. really caught on to that.

  80. It wasn't until later in chapter 5

  81. that this whole relationship

  82. between Jesus and his Father

  83. really came to the forefront.

  84. If you remember those messages,

  85. Jesus had a lot to say

  86. about his relationship with the Father.

  87. He...

  88. If you caught those messages,

  89. we heard him making

  90. some very interesting statements

  91. like,

  92. my Father is always at his work

  93. to this very day

  94. and I too am working.

  95. This was after he had healed

  96. a man on the Sabbath

  97. and the religious leaders

  98. were going after Jesus

  99. for doing that.

  100. And Jesus began to explain

  101. a little bit about

  102. his relationship with the Father.

  103. We're always at work.

  104. He referred to himself

  105. as doing nothing on his own.

  106. I do nothing by myself.

  107. I only do what I see

  108. my Father doing.

  109. He stated that his Father

  110. loves him.

  111. That his Father shows him

  112. everything he does.

  113. Jesus talked about

  114. how the Father would show him

  115. even greater things

  116. than what they'd already seen

  117. earlier that day.

  118. How one day

  119. they would see him,

  120. the Son,

  121. do some of the most amazing works

  122. in human history.

  123. Raising the dead

  124. back to life

  125. and the final judgment.

  126. He said,

  127. these works

  128. have been entrusted to me

  129. by my Father

  130. on purpose

  131. so that people

  132. will come to honor

  133. the Son,

  134. me,

  135. as they honor

  136. my Father.

  137. And we talked back then

  138. about how this relationship

  139. between Jesus

  140. and his Father

  141. is very mysterious.

  142. glorious.

  143. It's unlike anything

  144. that we know.

  145. We talked about

  146. how there's this oneness

  147. and unity

  148. between the Father

  149. and the Son.

  150. There's a togetherness

  151. and a unison

  152. in their working.

  153. We heard how Jesus

  154. describes

  155. his Father

  156. as sending him

  157. into the world

  158. and giving him

  159. works to do

  160. and works

  161. to finish.

  162. Testifying about

  163. his Son

  164. through those works.

  165. And then we hear

  166. on Jesus' side

  167. of the relationship

  168. about how his aim

  169. and his mission

  170. is to do

  171. those works

  172. that he's been

  173. given

  174. by his Father

  175. to finish that work

  176. to not just

  177. please himself

  178. but to please

  179. the Father

  180. who sent him.

  181. And in the midst

  182. of all this

  183. we saw the religious leaders

  184. having a very hard time

  185. with the way

  186. that Jesus talked

  187. about this special

  188. relationship

  189. that he has

  190. with his Father.

  191. They understood

  192. Jesus is making himself

  193. out to be equal

  194. with God

  195. and they were hearing

  196. words of blasphemy.

  197. So here we are again

  198. in this conversation

  199. in John chapter 6

    John 6 chapter mention

  200. with the crowd.

  201. This is after the feeding

  202. of the 5,000

  203. and some of the feeding

  204. of the 5,000 crowd

  205. are here.

  206. And this topic

  207. of Jesus'

  208. special relationship

  209. with the Father

  210. again comes

  211. to the forefront.

  212. So it starts

  213. in verse 35.

  214. Let me just read it again.

  215. Then Jesus declared,

  216. I am the bread of life.

  217. Whoever comes to me

  218. will never go hungry

  219. and whoever believes

  220. in me

  221. will never be thirsty.

  222. And we talked about this

  223. a couple weeks ago.

  224. Jesus is holding out

  225. this incredible promise

  226. of eternal life.

  227. That the deepest needs

  228. that you have

  229. can be satisfied,

  230. your thirst can be quenched

  231. forever.

  232. All you need to do

  233. to receive this

  234. is two things.

  235. He says,

  236. whoever comes to me,

  237. he says,

  238. whoever believes in me.

  239. So the invitation

  240. is on the table.

  241. He's just put it out there

  242. in front of the crowd.

  243. Come to me.

  244. Believe in me.

  245. But then the conversation

  246. takes this turn

  247. all of a sudden.

  248. And we read it

  249. in verse 36.

  250. Jesus says this next,

  251. but as I told you,

  252. you have seen me

  253. and still

  254. you do not believe.

  255. So it's like

  256. they're seeing Jesus

  257. do these works

  258. of God among them

  259. and yet they're not

  260. believing in him.

  261. And then this conversation

  262. starts to get

  263. a little strange

  264. all of a sudden.

  265. Jesus says this next.

  266. He says,

  267. all those the Father

  268. gives me

  269. will come to me.

  270. And whoever comes to me,

  271. I will never

  272. drive away.

  273. So we're still

  274. talking about

  275. people coming

  276. to Jesus,

  277. but now Jesus

  278. brings this whole talk

  279. about coming

  280. to him

  281. into a bigger

  282. discussion

  283. of what's going

  284. on between him

  285. and his Father.

  286. He makes

  287. this statement,

  288. all those

  289. the Father

  290. gives me

  291. will come

  292. to me.

  293. I don't know

  294. about you,

  295. but to me

  296. that seems

  297. a little bit

  298. unexpected

  299. of a thing

  300. to say,

  301. a little bit

  302. strange.

  303. Let's stop

  304. and think

  305. about it

  306. for a minute.

  307. We notice

  308. that the Father

  309. is giving

  310. something

  311. to the Son.

  312. What is he

  313. giving to him?

  314. People.

  315. It's kind

  316. of weird.

  317. This is something

  318. we can't relate

  319. to.

  320. We don't

  321. give people

  322. to other

  323. people.

  324. But here

  325. Jesus says

  326. that God

  327. the Father

  328. is giving

  329. people to

  330. him.

  331. The second

  332. thing that's

  333. strange is

  334. how this

  335. seems to

  336. be an

  337. explanation

  338. of why

  339. they don't

  340. believe.

  341. And maybe

  342. it's helpful

  343. at this point

  344. to think

  345. of the

  346. disciples

  347. who are

  348. here

  349. listening

  350. to this.

  351. Jesus

  352. has just

  353. put the

  354. invitation

  355. on the

  356. table.

  357. I am

  358. the bread

  359. of life.

  360. Come to

  361. me and

  362. believe in

  363. me.

  364. And it's

  365. like the

  366. crowd you

  367. can almost

  368. imagine in

  369. that moment

  370. is silent.

  371. As we

  372. just read

  373. Jesus says

  374. you do

  375. not

  376. believe.

  377. Nobody's

  378. coming

  379. forward.

  380. Nobody's

  381. moving.

  382. You can

  383. just almost

  384. imagine maybe

  385. the disciples

  386. just off to

  387. the side

  388. like you

  389. heard Jesus.

  390. He just

  391. put out the

  392. altar call.

  393. He just

  394. gave the

  395. invitation.

  396. Who's

  397. coming

  398. first?

  399. Come to

  400. him.

  401. And then

  402. all of a

  403. sudden the

  404. moment drags

  405. on and

  406. maybe there's

  407. a bit of

  408. awkwardness

  409. like is

  410. nobody going

  411. to come?

  412. You can

  413. almost imagine

  414. them like

  415. glancing over

  416. at Jesus

  417. like why is

  418. nobody

  419. coming?

  420. Why is

  421. nobody

  422. responding?

  423. You gave

  424. the invitation.

  425. What's

  426. happening

  427. here?

  428. Jesus'

  429. statement in

  430. verse 37

  431. seems to be

  432. an answer to

  433. that question.

  434. it's almost

  435. as if

  436. Jesus is

  437. saying

  438. don't worry

  439. if nobody

  440. is coming

  441. at this

  442. moment.

  443. All those

  444. the father

  445. gives me

  446. will come

  447. to me.

  448. We remember

  449. what Jesus

  450. said earlier

  451. that his

  452. father is

  453. always at

  454. work.

  455. Even now

  456. my father

  457. who is

  458. unseen

  459. is at

  460. work.

  461. He is

  462. doing this

  463. work of

  464. giving

  465. people

  466. to me.

  467. And

  468. whoever he

  469. is

  470. intentionally

  471. at work

  472. in

  473. will

  474. come

  475. to me.

  476. Maybe

  477. not at

  478. this

  479. instant.

  480. Maybe

  481. later

  482. today.

  483. Maybe

  484. tomorrow.

  485. But they

  486. will

  487. come

  488. to me.

  489. Perhaps

  490. another way

  491. to say it

  492. might be

  493. like this.

  494. Nobody

  495. that the

  496. father

  497. has

  498. determined

  499. to give

  500. to his

  501. son

  502. will

  503. miss

  504. the

  505. boat.

  506. And as

  507. soon as I

  508. say that

  509. I know

  510. that I

  511. have said

  512. something that

  513. doesn't sit

  514. well with

  515. some people.

  516. Maybe some

  517. of you here

  518. this morning.

  519. Hold on a

  520. second here.

  521. Are you

  522. saying that

  523. God has

  524. decided to

  525. give some

  526. to his

  527. son but

  528. not others?

  529. Or that

  530. God gives

  531. some to

  532. his son

  533. whether they

  534. want to

  535. come or

  536. not?

  537. Are you

  538. saying that

  539. some people

  540. are saved

  541. because God

  542. has decided

  543. to save

  544. them and

  545. others because

  546. he has not

  547. decided to

  548. save them?

  549. Are you

  550. saying that

  551. the people

  552. in this

  553. crowd who

  554. don't

  555. believe in

  556. Jesus don't

  557. believe because

  558. God has not

  559. decided to

  560. give them

  561. to the

  562. son?

  563. And if

  564. those are

  565. your questions

  566. those are

  567. good questions.

  568. They're good

  569. questions that

  570. I'm not going

  571. to try to

  572. answer fully

  573. this morning.

  574. There's a

  575. whole debate

  576. over this

  577. very verse

  578. this very

  579. thing that

  580. Jesus said

  581. but I will

  582. say a few

  583. things.

  584. Is there

  585. a chance

  586. that Jesus

  587. messed up

  588. his words

  589. or misspoke

  590. when he

  591. said this?

  592. All those

  593. the father

  594. gives me

  595. will come

  596. to me.

  597. Because you

  598. know there's

  599. something inside

  600. all of us

  601. that for some

  602. reason we want

  603. to flip that

  604. statement around

  605. or change

  606. the words

  607. in it.

  608. We want

  609. to say

  610. Jesus you

  611. must have

  612. misspoken what

  613. you meant to

  614. say was

  615. something like

  616. this.

  617. All those who

  618. first come

  619. to me

  620. will then be

  621. given to me

  622. by my father.

  623. Because I

  624. got to make

  625. that decision

  626. first right?

  627. But that's not

  628. what Jesus

  629. said.

  630. Or we might

  631. change it

  632. all together

  633. and make

  634. Jesus say

  635. this.

  636. All those

  637. who give

  638. themselves

  639. to me

  640. will come

  641. to me.

  642. But Jesus

  643. didn't say

  644. that either.

  645. He said

  646. all those

  647. the father

  648. gives me

  649. will come

  650. to me.

  651. And let's

  652. remember who

  653. Jesus is.

  654. He is the

  655. son of God

  656. who speaks

  657. only what he

  658. hears from

  659. his father.

  660. He doesn't

  661. misspeak.

  662. He said it

  663. this way

  664. and this

  665. is how

  666. he intended

  667. to say

  668. it.

  669. So the

  670. big question

  671. here of

  672. course is

  673. how does

  674. the father's

  675. giving of

  676. people relate

  677. to their

  678. coming to

  679. Jesus?

  680. Which comes

  681. first?

  682. Is one

  683. dependent on

  684. the other?

  685. And we may

  686. get to a

  687. little bit of

  688. an answer to

  689. that in the

  690. weeks ahead

  691. but for this

  692. morning I

  693. want us to

  694. focus on

  695. this relationship

  696. between father

  697. and son

  698. here.

  699. Let me

  700. point your

  701. attention to

  702. one word in

  703. the statement.

  704. That word

  705. gives.

  706. All those

  707. the father

  708. gives to

  709. me will

  710. come to

  711. me.

  712. There's

  713. something

  714. wonderful about

  715. that word.

  716. There's

  717. something bigger

  718. than just the

  719. crowd and

  720. Jesus and

  721. the disciples

  722. and what they

  723. can see

  724. going on

  725. here.

  726. those who

  727. the father

  728. gives to

  729. me will

  730. come to

  731. me.

  732. I want you

  733. to think

  734. about yourself.

  735. If you are

  736. a person who

  737. would say I

  738. have come to

  739. Jesus, what

  740. does this

  741. statement say

  742. about you

  743. here this

  744. morning?

  745. Do you

  746. know that

  747. you are a

  748. part of a

  749. larger story?

  750. Christmas is

  751. coming not

  752. too long from

  753. now.

  754. Starting to

  755. feel it a

  756. little more

  757. now that

  758. the snow

  759. has come.

  760. It's a

  761. time that we

  762. celebrate God's

  763. gift of his

  764. son to us.

  765. But what

  766. Jesus seems to

  767. be saying here

  768. is something

  769. different.

  770. He seems to

  771. be saying that

  772. we who have

  773. come to

  774. Jesus and

  775. those who

  776. will yet

  777. come are

  778. actually God's

  779. gift to

  780. his son.

  781. God's

  782. God's

  783. gift.

  784. Do you

  785. see that in

  786. these words?

  787. Another way to

  788. ask it would be

  789. like this.

  790. Who is the

  791. giver in this

  792. statement?

  793. statement?

  794. And then who

  795. is the

  796. recipient of

  797. the gift in

  798. this statement?

  799. And finally,

  800. what is the

  801. gift?

  802. gift?

  803. Think about

  804. this for a

  805. moment.

  806. Jesus is not

  807. talking about a

  808. gift that gives

  809. itself.

  810. He's talking

  811. about a gift

  812. given by

  813. someone, the

  814. father, to

  815. someone, the

  816. son.

  817. In this

  818. case, those

  819. who come to

  820. Jesus are the

  821. gift.

  822. Those who

  823. have yet to

  824. come to

  825. Jesus are

  826. part of those

  827. who will be

  828. given by

  829. God to

  830. his son.

  831. And so

  832. maybe it's

  833. helpful to

  834. think in

  835. terms like

  836. we often

  837. do at

  838. Christmas.

  839. Those of

  840. us who

  841. have come

  842. to Jesus

  843. or will

  844. yet come

  845. to Jesus

  846. are like

  847. we're like

  848. the ones

  849. wrapped up

  850. inside the

  851. box being

  852. given.

  853. But we

  854. should not

  855. think that

  856. God is a

  857. thoughtless

  858. gift giver

  859. or that he

  860. didn't know

  861. what to

  862. give to

  863. his son.

  864. We all

  865. know what

  866. it's like to

  867. feel the

  868. stress of

  869. Christmas gift

  870. giving.

  871. Maybe some

  872. of you are

  873. already starting

  874. to feel that

  875. right now.

  876. There's

  877. often times an

  878. expectation.

  879. And it's

  880. probably happened

  881. to all of us

  882. I'm sure that

  883. you know

  884. Christmas has

  885. snuck up on

  886. us and we

  887. ran out of

  888. time to get

  889. a carefully

  890. well thought

  891. out gift

  892. for someone

  893. that we

  894. love.

  895. God

  896. doesn't

  897. give like

  898. that.

  899. God is the

  900. most intentional

  901. thoughtless

  902. God is the

  903. most intentional

  904. thoughtless

  905. God doesn't

  906. give like that.

  907. God is the

  908. most intentional

  909. thoughtful and

  910. considerate

  911. giver in the

  912. universe who

  913. always finds

  914. nothing less

  915. than the

  916. perfect way to

  917. express his

  918. love.

  919. The perfect

  920. gift to give.

  921. God is the

  922. God.

  923. So we who

  924. come to

  925. Jesus are

  926. we're not

  927. like a gift

  928. from the

  929. father that

  930. just one day

  931. showed up on

  932. the father's

  933. doorstep and

  934. said here I

  935. am Lord send

  936. me and then

  937. he looked at

  938. us and said

  939. ah yes the

  940. perfect gift

  941. for my son.

  942. No rather

  943. all those who

  944. have come to

  945. Jesus and all

  946. those who have

  947. yet to come

  948. to Jesus are

  949. a gift that

  950. the father has

  951. been planning

  952. and preparing

  953. to give to

  954. his son since

  955. before the

  956. creation of

  957. the world.

  958. And there are

  959. numerous passages

  960. we could go to

  961. to demonstrate

  962. that.

  963. I think most

  964. of you have

  965. read your

  966. Bibles know

  967. those passages

  968. that I'm

  969. talking about.

  970. But I think

  971. we have trouble

  972. with this

  973. truth because

  974. our view of

  975. reality is

  976. warped by

  977. sin.

  978. Sin causes

  979. us to see

  980. ourselves as

  981. at the center

  982. of the

  983. grand story.

  984. Yet Jesus

  985. speaks here

  986. as if there

  987. is a greater

  988. story going

  989. on.

  990. He speaks

  991. of this

  992. dynamic love

  993. relationship

  994. between a

  995. father and

  996. a son.

  997. A story in

  998. which we are

  999. neither the

  1000. giver nor

  1001. the recipient.

  1002. Instead we're

  1003. the one wrapped

  1004. up in the

  1005. box.

  1006. we're the

  1007. gift being

  1008. given from

  1009. one to the

  1010. other.

  1011. And not

  1012. because we're

  1013. supremely

  1014. valuable.

  1015. Not because

  1016. God went and

  1017. found us and

  1018. sought out this

  1019. rare treasure.

  1020. Truthfully,

  1021. God did not

  1022. find us

  1023. beautiful and

  1024. worthy and

  1025. fit to be

  1026. given to his

  1027. son.

  1028. Rather he

  1029. has chosen to

  1030. radically transform

  1031. us and to

  1032. make us

  1033. worthy and

  1034. fit to be

  1035. given to his

  1036. son.

  1037. As they often

  1038. say, the best

  1039. gifts are

  1040. handmade and

  1041. can't be bought

  1042. in the store.

  1043. And so Jesus

  1044. is not worried

  1045. in this moment

  1046. that nobody is

  1047. coming forward

  1048. to him.

  1049. He's put the

  1050. invitation on

  1051. the table but

  1052. he's not

  1053. worried.

  1054. He's here to

  1055. speak and to

  1056. do what God

  1057. has given him

  1058. to speak and

  1059. to do.

  1060. And whether

  1061. someone comes

  1062. to him is

  1063. his father's

  1064. gift to

  1065. give.

  1066. I don't know

  1067. about you but

  1068. I find it

  1069. humbling to

  1070. hear of myself

  1071. being spoken

  1072. of in the

  1073. third person

  1074. by Jesus as

  1075. the gift and

  1076. not the giver

  1077. or the

  1078. recipient.

  1079. To me, it

  1080. says that my

  1081. coming to

  1082. Jesus and my

  1083. believing in

  1084. him is not

  1085. just something I

  1086. did on my

  1087. own.

  1088. It says to

  1089. me that God

  1090. was in my

  1091. coming to

  1092. Jesus.

  1093. He was

  1094. working in

  1095. it unseen

  1096. with intentional

  1097. purpose and

  1098. love right from

  1099. the start.

  1100. It's also

  1101. humbling to me

  1102. because it

  1103. means that my

  1104. coming to

  1105. Jesus and

  1106. being saved

  1107. from God's

  1108. wrath is not

  1109. just for me.

  1110. It's not just

  1111. for my sake.

  1112. it means I'm

  1113. also being

  1114. made into a

  1115. present, a

  1116. gift for the

  1117. Son, for

  1118. his sake, for

  1119. his pleasure and

  1120. honor.

  1121. And this

  1122. greater story

  1123. that we hear

  1124. Jesus refer to

  1125. here seems to

  1126. be more about

  1127. the Son than

  1128. it is about

  1129. me.

  1130. Now we

  1131. might still

  1132. wonder about

  1133. those questions

  1134. that I posed

  1135. earlier.

  1136. We might

  1137. wonder, well

  1138. what if God

  1139. hasn't chosen to

  1140. give me to

  1141. his Son?

  1142. Does that mean

  1143. that I can't

  1144. come to

  1145. Jesus?

  1146. And again, I'm

  1147. not going to

  1148. try to answer

  1149. that hypothetical

  1150. question because

  1151. there's mystery

  1152. here.

  1153. There's biblical

  1154. truth that we

  1155. see here in the

  1156. scriptures, but

  1157. where those

  1158. truths meet, it's

  1159. not easy to

  1160. understand.

  1161. We've got God's

  1162. work and we've

  1163. got our

  1164. responsibility and

  1165. those two

  1166. realities and

  1167. truths kind of

  1168. collide.

  1169. And just what

  1170. the result is, I

  1171. don't know exactly

  1172. how they relate to

  1173. one another, except

  1174. for the clear

  1175. anchoring truths that

  1176. we have in

  1177. scripture.

  1178. But one thing

  1179. that we can be

  1180. certain of is what

  1181. Jesus says to

  1182. give assurance to

  1183. anyone who would

  1184. be worried about

  1185. being left out.

  1186. He says, all

  1187. those the

  1188. Father gives

  1189. me will come

  1190. to me.

  1191. Nobody who

  1192. God gives to

  1193. his Son will

  1194. tragically

  1195. misinterpret the

  1196. signs or make

  1197. the mistake of

  1198. thinking that

  1199. Jesus isn't the

  1200. one.

  1201. The second

  1202. assurance we have

  1203. is what Jesus

  1204. says right after

  1205. this.

  1206. All those the

  1207. Father gives

  1208. me will come

  1209. to me and

  1210. whoever comes

  1211. to me, I

  1212. will never

  1213. drive away.

  1214. Exactly how

  1215. the Father does

  1216. his giving

  1217. work behind

  1218. the scenes, we

  1219. may not know.

  1220. But on the

  1221. whole, this is

  1222. clear.

  1223. The invitation to

  1224. have Jesus as

  1225. the bread for

  1226. your life, to

  1227. have this gift

  1228. of eternal

  1229. life, never be

  1230. hungry again,

  1231. never be thirsty

  1232. again.

  1233. This invitation is

  1234. on the table for

  1235. whoever, for the

  1236. world, for you.

  1237. And Jesus wants

  1238. you to know

  1239. that.

  1240. If you sincerely

  1241. come to him and

  1242. believe in him, you

  1243. will never find

  1244. yourself in that

  1245. place where Jesus

  1246. says, get out.

  1247. You don't belong.

  1248. Depart from me.

  1249. Go away.

  1250. In other words, if

  1251. you're worried that

  1252. you're not chosen, or

  1253. that you are somehow

  1254. in spiritual danger of

  1255. being left behind or

1256. left out, there is a

  1257. solution that always

  1258. works.

  1259. And it's simply this.

  1260. Come to Jesus and

  1261. believe in him.

  1262. And if you sincerely

  1263. do that, you will

  1264. never come to that

  1265. moment where you

  1266. find out that you're

  1267. rejected because you

  1268. weren't originally

1269. intended to be part of

  1270. the gift from the

  1271. father to the son.

  1272. Whoever comes to

  1273. me, I will never

  1274. drive away.

  1275. That's a promise.

  1276. That's an anchor for

  1277. us.

  1278. Let's go on to

  1279. verse 38.

  1280. Jesus continues on.

1281. He says, for I have

  1282. come down from heaven

1283. not to do my will,

1284. but to do the will of

  1285. him who sent me.

1286. So the first part that

1287. we just looked at was

  1288. all about God giving

  1289. people to his son.

1290. Now we're on the son

  1291. side of this relationship

  1292. again.

1293. And it's all about what

1294. he has come to do for

  1295. his father.

1296. God is giving people to

  1297. his son.

1298. But now Jesus says, I am

1299. here among you not to do

  1300. my will.

1301. Not to do what I want,

1302. but to do the will of

  1303. my father.

1304. To do what he wants.

  1305. It's this incredible

  1306. statement of humble

  1307. submission.

1308. And it's hard enough for

  1309. us to understand just

1310. what Jesus wills or wants

  1311. for himself.

  1312. That's maybe sometimes in

  1313. conflict with what the

  1314. father wants.

1315. We get glimpses of it

  1316. here and there.

  1317. Probably the most clear

1318. picture we see of it is

1319. in the garden on the

  1320. night of Jesus' arrest

  1321. where Jesus prays to

  1322. his father, take this

  1323. cup from me.

1324. Yet not my will, but

  1325. yours be done.

  1326. And that tension was

  1327. probably sprinkled

  1328. throughout Jesus' life.

  1329. Where submission to the

  1330. father's will was not

  1331. always easy.

1332. But as in the garden

1333. and in all of these

  1334. times, there was always

  1335. this heartbeat of love

  1336. that we see.

  1337. We see it here.

  1338. Perfect love for his

  1339. father.

  1340. He has this unbreakable

  1341. resolve and commitment

1342. to love his father by

  1343. doing what the father

  1344. wills.

1345. By doing what the father

1346. has given him to do or

1347. sent him to do, even to

  1348. the point of death.

  1349. love.

  1350. It's glorious.

  1351. It's beautiful.

1352. Where have you seen that

1353. kind of love and loyalty

  1354. and commitment in our

  1355. world?

  1356. Verse 39.

1357. And this is the will of

1358. him who sent me, that I

1359. shall lose none of all

1360. those he has given me, but

1361. raise them up at the last

  1362. day.

1363. So here it is again.

1364. Those of us who come to

1365. Jesus are being spoken of as

1366. those who are given by the

  1367. father to the son.

  1368. It's the father's work to

1369. give people to his son.

  1370. And it's the son's

  1371. responsibility or work not

1372. to lose a single one of

1373. those who have been given

  1374. to him.

1375. The picture of a shepherd

  1376. fits well here.

1377. My father's will is that I do

1378. not lose a single one of the

1379. sheep that he has given to my

  1380. care.

1381. The picture of a king also

  1382. fits.

1383. God's will is that I do not

1384. lose a single citizen in the

1385. kingdom to the threats of

  1386. the enemy.

1387. Jesus talks about being lost,

1388. that I shall lose none of all

1389. those he has given me.

  1390. What's the danger?

  1391. What's the threat?

1392. Why might we be lost?

1393. I think Jesus gives us the

1394. answer in verse 39 here.

1395. That I shall lose none of all

1396. those he has given me, but

1397. raise them up at the last day.

1398. So the thing that prevents us

1399. from being lost is the action

1400. of Jesus, which raises us up

  1401. at the last day.

1402. And so being lost, it seems,

1403. refers to that real danger

  1404. that we all face.

  1405. Death.

1406. The consequence for our sins

  1407. against God.

1408. It is the great enemy that

  1409. threatens us all.

1410. How can we be the gift of the

1411. Father to the Son if we are on

1412. death row, awaiting our final

  1413. sentence for breaking God's

  1414. holy law?

1415. God's will, we see it in here.

1416. This is the will of him who

  1417. sent me.

1418. God's will is that we not

  1419. perish and be lost.

1420. And so he has given Jesus

1421. important work that must be

1422. done to keep us, to prevent us

  1423. from being lost.

1424. Jesus will go on to say this

  1425. later in the gospel.

1426. I am the good shepherd.

1427. The good shepherd lays down

1428. his life for the sheep.

1429. First, Jesus must clear our

1430. legal debt with God and secure

1431. our just pardon with his own

  1432. death.

1433. And then he will do that great

1434. work of undoing death itself

1435. and raise us up at the last day.

  1436. verse 40.

1437. For my Father's will is that

1438. everyone who looks to the Son

1439. and believes in him shall have

1440. eternal life and I will raise

1441. them up at the last day.

1442. So what do we take from all this?

1443. there's a much greater story going on

1444. here than just a man named Jesus

  1445. talking to a crowd.

1446. There's a loving father and his son.

  1447. There's a father who wills and a son

1448. who humbly does what his father wills,

  1449. even when it's difficult.

  1450. There's a giver

  1451. and there's a recipient.

1452. And caught up in the middle of all this,

  1453. there's a gift that's being prepared

  1454. and made

  1455. and given.

1456. A gift that's in real danger of being lost

1457. unless the Son who has been sent

1458. carries out the mission that's been given

1459. to him by his Father.

1460. And in the midst of all this

1461. comes this invitation from Jesus

  1462. to come to him

  1463. and believe in him

  1464. to receive eternal life.

  1465. And I will raise

1466. those who come to me

  1467. and believe in me

  1468. up from the grave

  1469. at the last day.

  1470. So my simple question

1471. to leave us all with this morning

1472. is do you hear that invitation?

  1473. Have you accepted

  1474. that invitation?

  1475. Have you

  1476. come to Jesus

  1477. and sincerely

  1478. believed in him?

  1479. For my Father's will

  1480. is that everyone

1481. who looks to the Son

  1482. and believes in him

  1483. shall have

  1484. eternal life.

  1485. And I will

  1486. raise them up

  1487. at the last day.

  1488. Let's pray.

  1489. Father in heaven

1490. thank you for sending your Son.

  1491. Lord Jesus

1492. thank you for speaking these words.

1493. They are strange to us

1494. and yet they are words of life.

1495. They are words of love.

1496. help us to know you more.

  1497. Reveal yourself to us

1498. as we continue to look

  1499. and gaze on

1500. the story of your Son

1501. and the things that he said.

1502. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  1503. Amen.
