  1. All right, well, as we get into the Word of God this morning, we are going back into the Gospel of John.

  2. If you have your Bible with you, you can open it up to John chapter 6, and we're going to be starting about verse 60.

    John 6 chapter mention

  3. We're coming close to the end of this long conversation that Jesus has been having with the crowd.

  4. And you'll remember that some of the people there were at the feeding of the 5,000,

  5. and Jesus has been declaring to them that He is the bread that has come down from heaven.

  6. He's been telling them that He is the bread of life.

  7. He's been offering to them eternal life and inviting them to come to Him and believe in Him.

  8. And the crowd there has had some pretty telling questions and responses to Jesus.

  9. They've demanded that He do a sign before believing.

  10. They've been grumbling about what He is saying.

  11. And Jesus has kind of told them straight up,

  12. you guys have seen, and yet you still do not believe.

  13. Two weeks ago, we saw how all of this came to a head as Jesus said some things that were pretty shocking.

  14. In verse 54, He said,

  15. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life.

  16. And we talked about these words two weeks ago.

  17. We talked about what Jesus meant by them.

  18. Of course, He was not talking about actually eating His flesh and drinking His blood,

  19. but about how people need to partake in the deepest way possible of what His death will accomplish

  20. in order to have eternal life and to be saved from death.

  21. But it got the crowd arguing sharply about whether Jesus was speaking in metaphor or not.

  22. How can this man give us His flesh to eat?

  23. Some of them said.

  24. And all of this, John tells us, was said while He was teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

  25. So this morning, we want to look at what happened after this conversation.

  26. Let's read it starting in verse 60.

  27. On hearing it, many of His disciples said,

  28. This is a hard teaching.

  29. Who can accept it?

  30. Aware that His disciples were grumbling about this,

  31. Jesus said to them,

  32. Does this offend you?

  33. Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to where He was before?

  34. The Spirit gives life.

  35. The flesh counts for nothing.

  36. The words I have spoken to you.

  37. They are full of the Spirit and life.

  38. Yet there are some of you who do not believe.

  39. For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe,

  40. and who would betray Him.

  41. He went on to say,

  42. This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.

  43. So not only did the crowd grumble that day at what Jesus said,

  44. but even Jesus' disciples grumbled that day.

  45. This is a hard teaching, they said.

  46. Who can accept it?

  47. And I love how Jesus handles this.

  48. There's no beating around the bush.

  49. He just goes straight to it and asks them,

  50. Does this offend you?

  51. Do my words offend you?

  52. And then Jesus goes on to help them with this teaching.

  53. We're not going to have time to look at everything He said here,

  54. but one thing I will point out is what He says in verse 64.

  55. He says,

  56. There are some of you who do not believe.

  57. For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe,

  58. and who would betray Him.

  59. And so again in the Gospel of John here,

  60. we see that Jesus knows what's going on in the hearts of His followers.

  61. Even as He looks them in the eye right now,

  62. He knows which of them believes,

  63. and which of them does not.

  64. In fact, John tells us that all along,

  65. He has known which of them believes,

  66. and which of them does not.

  67. And this is not only referring to Judas,

  68. notice it says,

  69. Which of them, plural,

  70. and it's especially clear in the original language,

  71. which of them, plural, did not believe,

  72. and who, singular,

  73. would betray Him.

  74. It's as though Jesus sees right through them.

  75. He sees what's going on in their thoughts,

  76. in their hearts,

  77. and this reality that some of them do not believe,

  78. really leads into what we read next in verse 66.

  79. From this time on,

  80. many of His disciples turned back,

  81. and no longer followed Him.

  82. Let's stop and think about those words for a moment.

  83. Many of His disciples turned back,

  84. and no longer followed Him.

  85. So there were a lot of people following Jesus.

  86. And you can imagine that some of them just kind of came out for the day,

  87. or maybe two days,

  88. you know,

  89. just to see what He's saying and doing,

  90. to check Him out.

  91. But then there was a good number of people who were His disciples.

  92. They followed Him from place to place.

  93. The twelve disciples were among them.

  94. There were also a number of women that we know about from the other Gospels,

  95. and there were probably even more.

  96. This was probably a group that was a few times larger than the twelve disciples

  97. that we're all familiar with.

  98. And yet,

  99. John tells us that many of them turned back

  100. and no longer followed Him after this conversation.

  101. Let's think of this from the perspective of the twelve disciples.

  102. They were likely in the minority of people who stayed with Jesus

  103. and continued to follow Him after that day.

  104. Evidently, there was a large group of His followers who did not believe,

  105. just as Jesus said.

  106. And this whole conversation in the synagogue about,

  107. eat my flesh and drink my blood,

  108. it was like the spark that lit the fire.

  109. It was like the straw that broke the camel's back.

  110. They stumbled over what Jesus said that day in the synagogue.

  111. And the result was this mass exodus of many of His followers.

  112. You can almost imagine maybe what they're thinking.

  113. Like, man, eat my flesh and drink my blood?

  114. Like, that's too much for me.

  115. No way.

  116. That's over the top.

  117. I'm done.

  118. I'm going home.

  119. I imagine it a little bit like that moment

  120. where probably most of you have experienced,

  121. where you're at somebody's house for a gathering,

  122. and it's already getting late,

  123. and a number of people are thinking about going home.

  124. The conversation's kind of petering out,

  125. but it's still going.

  126. And then finally someone stands up and says,

  127. all right, well, I'm headed out.

  128. I'm going home.

  129. And then all of a sudden,

  130. everybody else kind of sees that opportunity.

  131. Yep, I was thinking the same thing.

  132. It's time for me to get going.

  133. And all of a sudden,

  134. there's just this mass exodus towards the door,

  135. and the party is over.

  136. Something like that,

  137. only here,

  138. not as friendly.

  139. There has been arguing,

  140. grumbling,

  141. and murmuring.

  142. And this is not just about going home tonight.

  143. It's about going home to stay.

  144. Like, we're done

  145. with following this Jesus guy around

  146. like we've been doing.

  147. All of a sudden,

  148. everybody, it seems,

  149. just stands up

  150. and walks out the door.

  151. And the picture that we have here

  152. is that there are relatively few

  153. left with Jesus.

  154. And Jesus turns to the 12 themselves.

  155. And he says,

  156. you do not want to leave too,

  157. do you?

  158. Jesus asked the 12.

  159. There's the door.

  160. If you've been thinking about it,

  161. if you've been thinking

  162. you might not want to follow me anymore,

  163. or you want to leave,

  164. you've seen the majority walk away from me

  165. all at once here,

  166. do any of you wish to join them?

  167. And it's here that Peter speaks.

  168. Lord,

  169. to whom shall we go?

  170. You have the words of eternal life.

  171. We have come to believe

  172. and to know

  173. that you are the Holy One of God.

  174. These are precious words.

  175. What is Peter saying here?

  176. Well, first there's the question,

  177. Lord,

  178. to whom shall we go?

  179. And what we notice is that

  180. it's not so much a question

  181. as a statement.

  182. Master,

  183. there are no other alternatives here

  184. when it comes to the faith of our fathers,

  185. when it comes to the scriptures,

  186. when it comes to the fulfillment

  187. of all that we have longed and hoped for.

  188. To whom shall we go for those answers?

  189. To whom shall we look for that hope

  190. to be fulfilled?

  191. John the baptizer,

  192. he was a great guy,

  193. but he pointed us to you.

  194. We certainly aren't seeing our longings

  195. and hopes fulfilled in the other rabbis

  196. or the people on the Jewish council.

  197. Nicodemus didn't seem to have the answers.

  198. The chief priests don't seem to have

  199. a real love for God as you do.

  200. They were all too happy to make a buck

  201. through the sellers and the exchangers

  202. at the temple.

  203. The teachers of the law

  204. don't seem to truly love people

  205. like you do.

  206. They're trying to get you

  207. in jail

  208. for healing a man on the Sabbath.

  209. Lord,

  210. to whom shall we go?

  211. There's no one else

  212. that we see as being from God

  213. the way that you are.

  214. And it's not just that you're

  215. the best of the worst.

  216. It's not just that you're

  217. the best that we've got

  218. in our day.

  219. If this question,

  220. to whom shall we go,

  221. was all Peter said,

  222. then we might be tempted

  223. to think that Peter

  224. is just desperately

  225. settling for Jesus.

  226. But he's not.

  227. There's more.

  228. He has some things

  229. to affirm about Jesus.

  230. He goes on.

  231. He says,

  232. you have

  233. the words

  234. of eternal life.

  235. we have come

  236. to believe

  237. and to know

  238. that you

  239. are the Holy One

  240. of God.

  241. What a statement

  242. of faith.

  243. For years,

  244. I've looked at these words

  245. of Peter,

  246. and I'm not sure

  247. that I quite heard

  248. what Peter was saying.

  249. I think I was bringing

  250. a lot of my own perspective

  251. to these words,

  252. and I thought Peter

  253. was saying something like,

  254. well,

  255. what's the alternative?

  256. Nobody else,

  257. no other religion,

  258. no other faith

  259. offers eternal life

  260. the way that you do,

  261. so I guess we'll take

  262. our chances with you

  263. because there might

  264. just be the real possibility

  265. that you could give us

  266. eternal life.

  267. We've got nothing

  268. better to do.

  269. We've got no one

  270. better to follow.

  271. Yet the more I listen

  272. to what Peter said

  273. that day

  274. and really reflect

  275. on all of it,

  276. the more I hear

  277. something different,

  278. the more I hear

  279. that this is not

  280. just a desperate gamble

  281. kind of a statement.

  282. It's not as though

  283. Peter's saying,

  284. we're going to keep

  285. following you

  286. simply because

  287. we've got nothing

  288. better to do,

  289. no one better

  290. to listen to.

  291. Rather,

  292. I'm seeing in these words

  293. an affirmation

  294. of faith.

  295. This is Peter

  296. saying out loud

  297. what he truly

  298. believes

  299. about Jesus.

  300. words

  301. of eternal

  302. life

  303. you

  304. have.

  305. And we

  306. have believed

  307. and not just

  308. believed,

  309. we have come

  310. to know

  311. that you

  312. are

  313. the Holy

  314. One of God.

  315. We're not going

  316. to go out the door.

  317. We don't want

  318. to leave.

  319. You have the words

  320. of eternal life

  321. and we know

  322. that you

  323. are the

  324. Holy One

  325. of God.

  326. Why would we

  327. leave?

  328. Where would we

  329. go?

  330. There is no

  331. other.

  332. It's as if

  333. Peter is saying,

  334. you are the

  335. one.

  336. We believe

  337. it.

  338. We know

  339. it.

  340. None of the

  341. other religious

  342. people around

  343. us here

  344. have these

  345. words.

  346. We believe

  347. you have the

  348. words that

  349. lead to

  350. eternal life.

  351. We believe

  352. you are the

  353. one he has

  354. sent,

  355. the Holy

  356. One of God.

  357. And not just

  358. believe,

  359. we know it.

  360. Jesus said

  361. some hard

  362. things that

  363. day.

  364. Eat my

  365. flesh and

  366. drink my

  367. blood.

  368. Yet Peter

  369. doesn't stumble

  370. too much

  371. over these

  372. words of

  373. Jesus,

  374. like many

  375. did that

  376. day.

  377. He probably

  378. found these

  379. words difficult.

  380. He was

  381. probably

  382. initially a

  383. little red

  384. in the face

  385. as Jesus

  386. said them,

  387. and maybe

  388. even upset

  389. as people

  390. started walking

  391. out the door

  392. on Jesus.

  393. But I

  394. think when we

  395. read these

  396. words,

  397. when we

  398. hear what

  399. he says,

  400. we have

  401. come to

  402. know that

  403. you are

  404. the Holy

  405. One of

  406. God.

  407. There

  408. wasn't a

  409. chance that

  410. Peter was

  411. going to be

  412. walking out

  413. that door.

  414. What Peter

  415. saw,

  416. somehow he

  417. saw and

  418. knew about

  419. Jesus what

  420. many did

  421. not see and

  422. did not know

  423. about him.

  424. What Peter

  425. saw and

  426. believed and

  427. knew about

  428. Jesus was

  429. enough to

  430. keep him

  431. following Jesus,

  432. even when

  433. Jesus said

  434. some things

  435. that were

  436. difficult or

  437. shocking or

  438. hard to

  439. understand.

  440. What he saw

  441. and believed

  442. and knew about

  443. Jesus was

  444. enough to

  445. keep him

  446. following Jesus

  447. even when

  448. the majority

  449. left and

  450. mocked and

  451. balked and

  452. turned away.

  453. I don't

  454. know about

  455. you, but

  456. these words

  457. have a

  458. special place

  459. in my

  460. heart.

  461. These words

  462. of Peter

  463. over the

  464. years since

  465. I first

  466. believed,

  467. they have

  468. been words

  469. of deep

  470. comfort and

  471. assurance.

  472. In fact,

  473. I would even

  474. say that

  475. these words

  476. have held

  477. me and

  478. kept me

  479. as a

  480. follower of

  481. Jesus.

  482. in those

  483. moments where

  484. I've wrestled

  485. with doubt

  486. and unbelief

  487. in my own

  488. soul.

  489. And I have

  490. wrestled with

  491. doubt and

  492. unbelief over

  493. my years of

  494. being a

  495. Christian.

  496. It's been

  497. less and

  498. less as I've

  499. grown in the

  500. Lord,

  501. less often

  502. and less

  503. deeply,

  504. deeply.

  505. But I

  506. still remember

  507. times in

  508. which these

  509. words of

  510. Peter became

  511. my own

  512. words in

  513. moments where

  514. I was feeling

  515. confused and

  516. doubtful and

  517. desperate.

  518. I remember

  519. when I first

  520. discovered when

  521. I was younger

  522. that the

  523. Bible wasn't

  524. written in

  525. English.

  526. And I began

  527. to wonder and

  528. doubt whether

  529. we even have

  530. the very words

  531. which God

  532. spoke.

  533. I started

  534. looking at the

  535. big differences

  536. in some of

  537. these translations

  538. and reading the

  539. footnotes in

  540. the Psalms on

  541. some of them

  542. where it says

  543. that the meaning

  544. of this Hebrew

  545. word or phrase

  546. is uncertain.

  547. And doubts

  548. began to rise

  549. in my mind.

  550. What if it's

  551. all lost in

  552. translation?

  553. What kind of

  554. foundation is my

  555. faith built on?

  556. And in the

  557. confusion of

  558. those moments,

  559. these words

  560. became my

  561. words as I

  562. wrestled

  563. words?

  564. And I

  565. thought,

  566. eventually I

  567. came to that

  568. question.

  569. Lord, to whom

  570. shall I go?

  571. Where else

  572. will I look?

  573. There are no

  574. other words

  575. except your

  576. words which

  577. make sense of

  578. this world,

  579. this life,

  580. and everything

  581. in it.

  582. I have come

  583. to know that

  584. you are the

  585. Holy One.

  586. I remember

  587. the first time

  588. I read some

  589. of those

  590. passages in

  591. the Bible

  592. that I would

  593. be honest and

  594. say I don't

  595. like or I

  596. didn't like.

  597. Reading how

  598. God decreed

  599. the execution

  600. of children

  601. in Canaan

  602. or how God

  603. struck one of

  604. the Levites

  605. dead for

  606. reaching out

  607. his hand to

  608. steady the

  609. Ark of the

  610. Covenant so

  611. that it didn't

  612. fall off the

  613. ox cart.

  614. I remember

  615. the first time

  616. I read in

  617. some of the

  618. prophets the

  619. writings there

  620. of God's

  621. severe wrath

  622. and anger

  623. towards the

  624. children of

  625. Israel.

  626. And even

  627. passages like

  628. this one where

  629. Jesus says

  630. some things

  631. that initially

  632. I think,

  633. why did you

  634. have to say

  635. it that way?

  636. Eat my flesh

  637. and drink my

  638. blood.

  639. And here

  640. again,

  641. Peter's words

  642. over the years

  643. have become my

  644. words.

  645. in the

  646. wrestling of

  647. those moments

  648. I come to

  649. the question,

  650. Lord,

  651. to whom

  652. shall we

  653. go?

  654. Nobody

  655. else has a

  656. better explanation

  657. of what's

  658. going on in

  659. our world.

  660. Nobody

  661. else has a

  662. better answer

  663. about where

  664. evil and

  665. suffering come

  666. from.

  667. I remember

  668. several moments

  669. in which I

  670. began to

  671. entertain the

  672. thoughts of

  673. the alternatives.

  674. thoughts like

  675. maybe there is

  676. no God.

  677. Maybe we

  678. are all

  679. just part

  680. of just

  681. the product

  682. of a big

  683. explosion

  684. that happened

  685. long ago

  686. and suffering

  687. and evil

  688. and death

  689. are just

  690. part of the

  691. normal stuff

  692. of our

  693. natural world.

  694. Aside from

  695. the fact that

  696. that view

  697. is totally

  698. hopeless

  699. and depressing

  700. and takes

  701. all the

  702. beauty and

  703. purpose out

  704. of life,

  705. nobody who

  706. believes that

  707. has been able

  708. to answer

  709. the question

  710. at least for

  711. me of how

  712. we got

  713. there,

  714. how we

  715. got here.

  716. How did

  717. we as human

  718. beings actually

  719. get here in

  720. all our

  721. wonderful

  722. complexity?

  723. They will

  724. say it's a

  725. long,

  726. long time

  727. plus chance

  728. but I look

  729. at my hand

  730. I think about

  731. who I am

  732. in all my

  733. wonderful

  734. complexity.

  735. complexity

  736. and I

  737. just know

  738. there's not

  739. a chance

  740. that it was

  741. just chance

  742. and time.

  743. God,

  744. you have

  745. the words

  746. which brought

  747. life long

  748. ago and

  749. you have

  750. the words

  751. which will

  752. bring eternal

  753. life and

  754. hope beyond

  755. the grave.

  756. I remember

  757. a few moments

  758. when I was

  759. working as a

  760. courier and

  761. I'd be doing

  762. my rounds at

  763. the mall in

  764. Edmonton

  765. and a few

  766. days I

  767. thought to

  768. myself,

  769. what are

  770. the chances

  771. that the

  772. majority of

  773. our world

  774. has got it

  775. wrong and

  776. doesn't see

  777. the truth of

  778. Jesus and

  779. the truth of

  780. what's really

  781. happening in

  782. our world?

  783. How can it

  784. be that only

  785. a relative

  786. few see the

  787. truth and

  788. know the

  789. truth?

  790. Why is it

  791. that so many

  792. think that

  793. what I believe

  794. is foolish

  795. and a waste

  796. of time?

  797. Why can't

  798. God just show

  799. up in power

  800. and glory

  801. and convince

  802. everyone?

  803. I don't

  804. like this

  805. feeling of

  806. being in

  807. the mocked

  808. minority.

  809. Maybe I

  810. should throw

  811. in the towel

  812. and be done

  813. with it.

  814. And here

  815. again,

  816. Peter's words

  817. became my

  818. words.

  819. Well,

  820. to whom

  821. will I go?

  822. What other

  823. belief or view

  824. of the world

  825. will I adopt?

  826. there are no

  827. other alternatives.

  828. Deep down

  829. inside,

  830. I believe

  831. that what

  832. Jesus says

  833. is the

  834. truth.

  835. I see

  836. something about

  837. him that

  838. others do

  839. not see.

  840. And I

  841. would say

  842. I know

  843. that he

  844. is the

  845. Holy One

  846. of God.

  847. Somehow

  848. by God's

  849. spirit at

  850. work within

  851. his people,

  852. these words

  853. of Peter

  854. are our

  855. words

  856. when we

  857. consider

  858. whether or

  859. not we

  860. should walk

  861. out the

  862. door on

  863. Jesus and

  864. just go

  865. our own

  866. way.

  867. I've

  868. come to

  869. learn that

  870. we,

  871. like Peter,

  872. I think,

  873. realizes in

  874. this moment,

  875. we don't

  876. have to

  877. have every

  878. answer.

  879. We don't

  880. have to

  881. have every

  882. last word

  883. of Hebrew

  884. poetry

  885. translated

  886. with

  887. certainty

  888. into our

  889. own

  890. language.

  891. we don't

  892. have to

  893. like

  894. everything

  895. that God

  896. decides to

  897. do in

  898. his own

  899. freedom and

  900. justice.

  901. We just

  902. need to

  903. believe and

  904. know by

  905. the grace

  906. of God

  907. that Jesus

  908. is the

  909. Holy One

  910. of God.

  911. That was

  912. enough to

  913. keep Peter

  914. there with

  915. Jesus that

  916. day.

  917. That's enough

  918. to keep me

  919. here with

  920. Jesus,

  921. even if

  922. everybody

  923. else walks

  924. away.

  925. I believe

  926. he does

  927. have the

  928. words that

  929. lead to

  930. eternal

  931. life.

  932. Do you?

  933. Let's

  934. imagine

  935. ourselves in

  936. that moment

  937. with the

  938. other

  939. disciples.

  940. Jesus

  941. says,

  942. there's the

  943. door.

  944. door.

  945. Do you

  946. want to

  947. leave too?

  948. I know

  949. my answer.

  950. What's your

  951. answer?

  952. door.

  953. Let's

  954. pray.

  955. Father in

  956. heaven, we

  957. thank you for

  958. sending your

  959. son.

  960. And we

  961. confess, we

  962. do believe that

  963. he is the

  964. Holy One.

  965. We also

  966. admit that we

  967. have doubts.

  968. At times, we

  969. wrestle with

  970. things.

  971. And we

  972. thank you that

  973. you are patient

  974. with us and

  975. gracious to

  976. us.

  977. Thank you

  978. that you

  979. bring us

  980. around.

  981. You convince

  982. us.

  983. You lead us

  984. back to this

  985. place where we

  986. come to

  987. assurance and

  988. faith.

  989. Help us to

  990. grow in our

  991. faith, Lord.

  992. We do have

  993. unbelief, but

  994. help us in

  995. it.

  996. Guide us and

  997. keep us.

  998. We ask this in

  999. Jesus' name.

  1000. Amen.
