  1. Bible with you this morning. Please open it up to John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  2. John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  3. We've been working through this chapter for some time now.

  4. We're really digging into the details.

  5. There's a long conversation here between Jesus and a crowd.

  6. We've looked at almost everything that Jesus has said here.

  7. This morning is our last morning in the chapter.

  8. We want to consider a few final statements that Jesus made,

  9. which we've kind of skipped over until now.

  10. Let me just say a word of prayer.

  11. Father in heaven, please help us now in these moments as we read your words,

  12. which you've preserved for us.

  13. Give us insight.

  14. Give us wisdom.

  15. Give us understanding.

  16. Help us to hear what Jesus said and to know exactly how it applies to us.

  17. We ask this in his name.

  18. Amen.

  19. All right.

  20. So let's get our bearings in this conversation one last time.

  21. And we want to keep this whole conversation with the crowd and with Jesus' disciples

  22. and with Peter in mind as much as we can,

  23. because this is the context of the statements that Jesus made that we're going to consider this morning.

  24. We need to look at what Jesus said, but also when and why he said what he said.

  25. And this is the picture that we've seen so far here.

  26. There's Jesus who's speaking to this crowd in the synagogue in Capernaum.

  27. And in Jesus' own words, he is speaking to them words which are spirit and life,

  28. words of truth that have been given to him by his father to say.

  29. And then there's this crowd who is listening.

  30. And on the whole, they do not believe what Jesus is saying,

  31. even though some of them have tasted for themselves the bread that he made just the day before

  32. on the other side of the lake.

  33. And many have seen signs that he has performed.

  34. They have seen, and yet they do not believe, says Jesus.

  35. And Jesus has been very patient, it seems, to take time to speak with them more,

  36. to tell them more truth.

  37. And yet the crowd, it seems, from bad to worse.

  38. They go from holding their unbelief on the inside

  39. to openly and blatantly challenging Jesus and grumbling at him and arguing with him.

  40. And then, after this conversation with the crowd is over,

  41. there's a conversation between Jesus and his disciples in verse 60 and down.

  42. And they too are grumbling, some of them, about the things that Jesus has been saying.

  43. Jesus points out to them that he knows that some of them do not believe.

  44. And then we come to this moment in verse 66 where many of them walk out the door on Jesus

  45. and no longer follow him.

  46. And in the midst of all of this, we saw last Sunday a guy named Peter,

  47. one of the twelve,

  48. declare that he has no intentions of walking away from Jesus

  49. because he believes and knows that Jesus is the Holy One of God.

  50. These are his words.

  51. We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.

  52. So what is going on here?

  53. How is it that Peter sees and believes and knows the truth about Jesus,

  54. but all these others do not?

  55. What is going on here?

  56. Why is the crowd not persuaded by Jesus' words?

  57. Peter was persuaded at some point.

  58. Why him and not the rest?

  59. Is it because Peter is smarter than the others?

  60. Is it because Peter is more gullible than the others?

  61. Is it because Peter doesn't actually know,

  62. but that he's just made up his mind that this is what he believes?

  63. Or is there something else going on here?

  64. Well, we already heard from Jesus that there is something else going on here,

  65. something much bigger.

  66. We heard it for the first time when Jesus said this in John 6, verse 36.

    John 6:36

  67. He said,

  68. So the people in the crowd, they're not coming to Jesus because they don't believe in him.

  69. And Jesus tells them that despite the fact that they're not coming,

  70. some will come,

  71. some will come, and not just some, but all of those who the Father gives to him will come to him.

  72. There's this unseen story that we talked about unfolding here between Father and Son.

  73. A story in which God the Father is giving people to his Son.

  74. And Jesus seems to be expressing unshakable confidence that not a single one of those whom the Father intends to give to him

  75. will fail to recognize Jesus and believe in him and come to him.

  76. And from there, Jesus goes on in the conversation.

  77. But then it comes up again.

  78. Jesus says something and it further exposes their unbelief.

  79. And they start grumbling about what he said.

  80. Down in verse 41.

  81. At this, the Jews there began to grumble about him because he said,

  82. I am the bread that came down from heaven.

  83. They said,

  84. Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph,

  85. whose father and mother we know?

  86. How can he now say,

  87. I came down from heaven?

  88. Stop grumbling among yourselves.

  89. Jesus answered,

  90. No one can come to me

  91. unless the Father who sent me

  92. draws them.

  93. So first it's the statement

  94. that all who the Father gives to Jesus

  95. will come to him.

  96. And now it's this statement

  97. that no one can come to Jesus

  98. unless the Father who sent him

  99. draws them.

  100. So there's more involved with coming to Jesus.

  101. And that more that's involved

  102. is what the Father must first do

  103. to make it possible.

  104. And then the conversation goes on from there.

  105. And eventually we come to the conversation

  106. that he has with his disciples.

  107. And Jesus says almost the same thing again.

  108. Right before a bunch of them leave,

  109. they're grumbling about his words.

  110. And Jesus says this.

  111. He says,

  112. There are some of you who do not believe.

  113. For Jesus had known from the beginning

  114. which of them did not believe

  115. and who would betray him.

  116. He went on to say,

  117. This is why I told you

  118. that no one can come to me

  119. unless the Father

  120. enables them to.

  121. That's the NIV translation.

  122. The more literal translation

  123. that most Bible translations have

  124. is unless it has been granted

  125. to him

  126. by the Father

  127. or given to him

  128. by the Father.

  129. So a third time

  130. we see that Jesus points out

  131. the unbelief of some

  132. who are there.

  133. And then he gives an explanation for it.

  134. He says,

  135. There are some among you

  136. who do not believe.

  137. This is why I told you

  138. that no one can come to me

  139. unless it is granted to him

  140. by the Father.

  141. So here it seems

  142. Jesus is making a parallel statement

  143. to the one he made earlier

  144. in verse 44

  145. about how no one can come to him

  146. unless the Father draws them.

  147. It's the same kind of statement.

  148. And it seems to be given

  149. an explanation

  150. for why some don't believe.

  151. Only here,

  152. the word used

  153. is granted

  154. or given

  155. instead of drawn.

  156. What the Father must

  157. first do

  158. for his part

  159. is grant

  160. that a person

  161. may come to Jesus.

  162. So a little bit

  163. different wording

  164. but a similar meaning.

  165. So three times

  166. in this conversation,

  167. in this chapter,

  168. Jesus speaks about

  169. something that the Father does

  170. which is deeply connected

  171. to people

  172. believing in Jesus

  173. and coming to him.

  174. All those

  175. the Father gives me

  176. will come to me.

  177. No one

  178. can come to me

  179. unless the Father

  180. who sent me

  181. draws them.

  182. And no one

  183. can come to me

  184. unless it is granted to him

  185. by the Father.

  186. So what do

  187. these statements mean?

  188. Let's try to bring them together.

  189. What do they mean?

  190. Well,

  191. these particular

  192. statements of Jesus

  193. have been the subject

  194. of much debate

  195. amongst Christians.

  196. And unfortunately,

  197. it's a very ugly debate.

  198. There are brothers and sisters

  199. on all sides of it

  200. and many of them

  201. are denouncing one another

  202. as heretics

  203. or as false teachers.

  204. In fact,

  205. this debate

  206. is not unlike

  207. the coronavirus debate

  208. that's swirling around us

  209. today.

  210. You've got people over here

  211. saying one thing.

  212. This is how we should read it.

  213. You've got other people

  214. over here saying,

  215. no, you guys are wrong.

  216. You should read it this way.

  217. You've got this third group

  218. saying,

  219. you're both wrong.

  220. I've got it figured out.

  221. This is how it is.

  222. And then you've got

  223. a whole bunch more

  224. of us

  225. throwing our hands up

  226. in the air in the middle

  227. kind of wondering,

  228. well, who do I trust?

  229. We've got scholars

  230. over here

  231. that say this.

  232. We've got scholars

  233. over here.

  234. We've got Greek experts

  235. over here

  236. and Greek experts

  237. over here.

  238. Who do I trust?

  239. Who do I believe?

  240. Which one is right?

  241. And many of them

  242. are pointing their fingers

  243. at the others

  244. and saying,

  245. well,

  246. those guys are taking

  247. this out of context

  248. or those guys

  249. are imposing

  250. their view

  251. or their tradition

  252. upon this passage

  253. or we know

  254. what the Greek words

  255. really mean

  256. here.

  257. And at the end

  258. of the day,

  259. much like with

  260. the coronavirus,

  261. you can almost

  262. just decide for yourself

  263. whatever you want

  264. them to mean

  265. and then go on Google

  266. and you'll be able

  267. to find a whole host

  268. of people

  269. who agree with you

  270. and are saying

  271. the same thing.

  272. It's a little bit

  273. frustrating.

  274. Even this week,

  275. I'll be honest,

  276. as I was studying

  277. into this,

  278. there were a couple

  279. moments where I just

  280. thought,

  281. I just want to skip

  282. this verse.

  283. there are elements

  284. of all sides

  285. that sound reasonable.

  286. But as I worked

  287. through all of this,

  288. it came clear to me

  289. that there are really

  290. two questions here.

  291. The central question

  292. here is,

  293. what did Jesus

  294. mean

  295. by these statements?

  296. The secondary

  297. question here is,

  298. who do these

  299. statements apply to?

  300. Who does the

  301. Father draw

  302. or who does the

  303. Father grant

  304. to come to Jesus?

  305. And it's mostly

  306. that question

  307. which sparks

  308. all the debate.

  309. For this morning,

  310. we really only have

  311. time to look

  312. at the central question.

  313. And so we're going

  314. to kind of skirt

  315. the edges of the

  316. debate as much

  317. as possible.

  318. And if you want

  319. to talk about

  320. the second question

  321. later,

  322. I invite you to

  323. come have that

  324. conversation later

  325. after the service.

  326. So what did

  327. Jesus mean

  328. by these

  329. two similar

  330. statements

  331. that he made?

  332. No one

  333. can come

  334. to me

  335. unless the

  336. Father who

  337. sent me

  338. draws him.

  339. And no one

  340. can come

  341. to me

  342. unless it

  343. is granted

  344. to him

  345. by the

  346. Father.

  347. Perhaps the

  348. first thing

  349. that we notice

  350. is that word

  351. unless.

  352. There's a

  353. condition,

  354. there's a

  355. requirement

  356. in both

  357. of these

  358. statements.

  359. A person

  360. cannot come

  361. to Jesus

  362. unless

  363. Jesus says

  364. that person

  365. is first

  366. drawn

  367. by the

  368. Father.

  369. A person

  370. cannot come

  371. to Jesus

  372. unless

  373. that person

  374. is first

  375. granted

  376. to come

  377. by the

  378. Father.

  379. In both

  380. cases,

  381. something is

  382. required of

  383. the Father

  384. to do

  385. so that a

  386. person may

  387. come to

  388. Jesus.

  389. A second

  390. thing that

  391. we see

  392. here is

  393. the word

  394. can.

  395. Now in

  396. English,

  397. this is a

  398. pretty small

  399. word,

  400. just three

  401. letters,

  402. but in

  403. the original

  404. language,

  405. it's a

  406. full-blown

  407. verb,

  408. and it

  409. basically

  410. means to

  411. have the

  412. ability to

  413. do something.

  414. Can,

  415. to be

  416. able to,

  417. we might

  418. paraphrase

  419. it as

  420. no one

  421. is able

  422. to come

  423. to me.

  424. unless

  425. the Father

  426. does his

  427. part.

  428. So it

  429. seems,

  430. at least

  431. to me,

  432. that Jesus

  433. is talking

  434. about an

  435. inability

  436. that

  437. everyone

  438. has.

  439. No one

  440. can come

  441. unless.

  442. No one

  443. is able

  444. to come

  445. unless the

  446. Father

  447. does his

  448. part.

  449. Drawing

  450. and granting

  451. us to

  452. come.

  453. We have

  454. an inability.

  455. Let's

  456. make it

  457. personal

  458. and really

  459. press these

  460. words into

  461. our hearts

  462. this morning.

  463. Do you

  464. realize,

  465. according to

  466. Jesus,

  467. even to

  468. come to

  469. him,

  470. even to

  471. come to

  472. him,

  473. as he's

  474. been calling

  475. people to

  476. do,

  477. you are

  478. at the

  479. mercy

  480. of God.

  481. God,

  482. Jesus

  483. wants you

  484. to know

  485. that it's

  486. something

  487. you cannot

  488. do on

  489. your own

  490. without

  491. God's

  492. help.

  493. Unless the

  494. Father draws

  495. you,

  496. unless he

  497. grants it

  498. to you

  499. to come,

  500. you cannot.

  501. God.

  502. These are

  503. pretty sobering

  504. words,

  505. aren't they?

  506. I mean,

  507. it's through

  508. Jesus that

  509. we get to

  510. the Father.

  511. No one

  512. comes to

  513. the Father

  514. but by

  515. me.

  516. It's through

  517. Jesus that

  518. we get

  519. this eternal

  520. life and

  521. are raised

  522. up at the

  523. last day,

  524. as Jesus

  525. has been

  526. talking about.

  527. It's through

  528. him that

  529. we are

  530. spared

  531. God's

  532. judgment

  533. at the

  534. end.

  535. These are

  536. all good

  537. things that

  538. Jesus has

  539. been talking

  540. about and

  541. he's told

  542. us that

  543. in order

  544. to receive

  545. them,

  546. we must

  547. believe in

  548. him.

  549. We must

  550. come to

  551. him.

  552. And now

  553. he tells

  554. us that

  555. we cannot

  556. come to

  557. him unless

  558. God

  559. acts

  560. first

  561. to draw

  562. us

  563. and

  564. grants

  565. us

  566. to come

  567. to Jesus.

  568. What

  569. Jesus is

  570. saying is

  571. that we

  572. are totally

  573. at the

  574. mercy

  575. of God.

  576. Not only

  577. for the

  578. way of

  579. salvation,

  580. but also

  581. to be

  582. able to

  583. get to

  584. the way

  585. of

  586. salvation.

  587. Do you

  588. hear that

  589. in these

  590. words?

  591. Do you

  592. see that

  593. in these

  594. words?

  595. Does your

  596. heart feel

  597. the weight

  598. of that

  599. in these

  600. words of

  601. Jesus?

  602. Jesus,

  603. these words

  604. speak of

  605. how lost

  606. I am.

  607. And it's

  608. worse than

  609. it maybe

  610. feels or

  611. perhaps than

  612. I originally

  613. thought.

  614. I have an

  615. inability,

  616. according to

  617. Jesus,

  618. to grab a

  619. hold of the

  620. lifeline that

  621. is Jesus

  622. apart from

  623. the drawing

  624. and granting

  625. of God

  626. the Father.

  627. What this

  628. means to me

  629. is that I

  630. am saved

  631. from start

  632. to finish

  633. by God's

  634. grace as

  635. an unearned

  636. gift of

  637. God.

  638. And not

  639. simply because

  640. I managed

  641. in my own

  642. ability to

  643. get to

  644. Jesus,

  645. to figure

  646. out who

  647. he was,

  648. who's the

  649. Messiah,

  650. to see what

  651. others could

  652. not see.

  653. Now I'm

  654. not sure at

  655. this point

  656. if Peter

  657. understands what

  658. Jesus is

  659. saying.

  660. Let's pull

  661. Peter into

  662. focus here.

  663. He's the

  664. one who

  665. we looked

  666. at last

  667. Sunday.

  668. I wonder

  669. if Peter

  670. perhaps isn't

  671. somewhat

  672. congratulating

  673. himself on

  674. having found

  675. Jesus,

  676. the Messiah.

  677. He said,

  678. we have

  679. come to

  680. believe and

  681. to know

  682. that you

  683. are the

  684. Holy One

  685. of God.

  686. And he

  687. says this

  688. right after

  689. many,

  690. probably the

  691. majority of

  692. Jesus'

  693. disciples just

  694. walked out

  695. the door

  696. on him.

  697. We have

  698. come to

  699. believe and

  700. to know

  701. that you

  702. are the

  703. Holy One

  704. of God.

  705. But I

  706. think if

  707. we're listening

  708. to Jesus

  709. in these

  710. words,

  711. what he

  712. wants Peter

  713. to know

  714. is that he

  715. hasn't figured

  716. this out

  717. all by

  718. himself

  719. without

  720. God's

  721. help.

  722. Peter

  723. makes his

  724. declaration

  725. of faith.

  726. Somehow,

  727. we talked

  728. last Sunday,

  729. he sees the

  730. truth about

  731. Jesus that

  732. many do

  733. not.

  734. And we

  735. might be

  736. tempted,

  737. perhaps Peter

  738. was tempted

  739. to think,

  740. at least I

  741. have made

  742. the right

  743. choice.

  744. He makes

  745. his declaration.

  746. we've come

  747. to believe

  748. and to

  749. know that

  750. you are

  751. the Holy

  752. One of

  753. God.

  754. And maybe

  755. we might

  756. be expecting

  757. Jesus to

  758. say,

  759. well done,

  760. Peter.

  761. You have

  762. chosen well.

  763. But instead,

  764. Jesus says

  765. somewhat

  766. an unexpected

  767. response.

  768. He says,

  769. have I

  770. not chosen

  771. you?

  772. maybe not

  773. what we

  774. were expecting

  775. to hear.

  776. And this

  777. kind of a

  778. moment

  779. happens again,

  780. another time

  781. for Peter.

  782. As Matthew

  783. records in

  784. his gospel,

  785. Matthew

    Matthew 16 chapter mention

  786. chapter 16,

  787. you're probably

  788. familiar with

  789. it.

  790. Jesus

  791. says to

  792. his disciples,

  793. who do

  794. people say

  795. the Son

  796. of Man

  797. is?

  798. And there's

  799. a conversation

  800. about,

  801. you know,

  802. who is

  803. Jesus?

  804. They give

  805. some of the

  806. answers.

  807. Then Jesus

  808. narrows it

  809. down and

  810. he says,

  811. what about

  812. you to

  813. his disciples?

  814. Who do

  815. you say

  816. that I

  817. am?

  818. And this

  819. is Peter's

  820. response.

  821. You are

  822. the Messiah,

  823. the Son

  824. of the

  825. living God.

  826. Again,

  827. we might

  828. be expecting

  829. Jesus to

  830. congratulate

  831. Peter.

  832. Well done.

  833. You figured

  834. it out.

  835. And again,

  836. Jesus says

  837. this,

  838. similar kind

  839. of a thing.

  840. He says,

  841. blessed

  842. are you,

  843. Simon,

  844. for this

  845. was not

  846. revealed to

  847. you by

  848. flesh and

  849. blood,

  850. but by my

  851. Father in

  852. heaven.

  853. Jesus gives

  854. his Father

  855. the credit

  856. for Peter's

  857. understanding

  858. the truth

  859. of who

  860. Jesus is.

  861. God

  862. is.

  863. It's kind

  864. of a

  865. deflating

  866. moment.

  867. It takes

  868. away from

  869. Peter the

  870. opportunity to

  871. brag or to

  872. boast about

  873. the fact that

  874. I have

  875. figured it

  876. out,

  877. while everybody

  878. else seems to

  879. have missed

  880. it.

  881. It's as though

  882. Jesus is saying,

  883. yes, you have

  884. come to me.

  885. Yes, you have

  886. figured out the

  887. truth about me,

  888. but not on

  889. your own,

  890. not without

  891. the blessing

  892. and the

  893. revealing,

  894. the granting

  895. and the

  896. drawing

  897. of my

  898. Father.

  899. Without that,

  900. you'd be in the

  901. same spot as

  902. the rest.

  903. There is more

  904. going on here

  905. than just the

  906. people and

  907. Jesus.

  908. The Father

  909. is at work

  910. in unseen

  911. ways,

  912. blessing

  913. and revealing,

  914. granting

  915. and drawing

  916. people.

  917. And what

  918. he is doing

  919. factors in

  920. hugely

  921. to what's

  922. going on

  923. here.

  924. No one

  925. can come

  926. to me

  927. unless

  928. the Father

  929. who sent

  930. me

  931. draws him.

  932. No one

  933. can come

  934. to me

  935. unless

  936. it is

  937. granted

  938. to him

  939. by

  940. the

  941. Father.

  942. We might

  943. imagine

  944. that we

  945. are

  946. drowning

  947. in the

  948. ocean

  949. and that

  950. God

  951. throws out

  952. one of

  953. those

  954. life rings

  955. to us.

  956. That's

  957. Jesus.

  958. And the

  959. life ring

  960. is there

  961. in the

  962. water,

  963. right in

  964. front of

  965. us.

  966. Jesus

  967. has come

  968. into our

  969. world,

  970. but we're

  971. unable to

  972. get to

  973. it.

  974. For some

  975. reason,

  976. it's just

  977. out of reach.

  978. we have

  979. this

  980. inability

  981. that Jesus

  982. speaks of.

  983. And there's

  984. all kind of

  985. debate as

  986. to what's

  987. the reason

  988. for this

  989. inability.

  990. What is

  991. this

  992. inability?

  993. Perhaps it's

  994. like the

  995. people of the

  996. crowd,

  997. even some

  998. of the

  999. disciples who

  1000. left that

  1001. day,

  1002. like a

  1003. blindness,

  1004. where we're

  1005. just unable

  1006. to see

  1007. Jesus as

  1008. the special

  1009. provision of

  1010. God that

  1011. he is.

  1012. or perhaps

  1013. it's a

  1014. stubborn

  1015. heartedness,

  1016. a deeply

  1017. rooted

  1018. unwillingness

  1019. to acknowledge

  1020. that Jesus

  1021. is the

  1022. life ring

  1023. that God

  1024. has provided.

  1025. Whatever it

  1026. is,

  1027. it seems

  1028. clear from

  1029. Jesus'

  1030. words that

  1031. we need

  1032. more than

  1033. just the

  1034. life ring

  1035. to be

  1036. saved.

  1037. We need

  1038. help from

  1039. God,

  1040. the Father,

  1041. to come

  1042. to the

  1043. life ring

  1044. so we can

  1045. grab a hold

  1046. of it.

  1047. God must

  1048. work first

  1049. with his

  1050. power in

  1051. us,

  1052. or else

  1053. we will

  1054. remain

  1055. unable

  1056. to come

  1057. to Jesus.

  1058. And so

  1059. we truly

  1060. are at

  1061. the mercy

  1062. of God.

  1063. We need

  1064. the Father

  1065. to draw

  1066. us.

  1067. We need

  1068. the Father

  1069. to grant

  1070. it to us

  1071. that we

  1072. come

  1073. to Jesus,

  1074. or else

  1075. we can't.

  1076. God

  1077. to pray.

  1078. Now this

  1079. is perhaps

  1080. a surprising

  1081. and unexpected

  1082. thing to

  1083. many of

  1084. us.

  1085. Not for

  1086. all of

  1087. us.

  1088. Some of

  1089. us may

  1090. remember a

  1091. time before

  1092. we became

  1093. a follower

  1094. of Jesus

  1095. where we

  1096. felt drawn

  1097. by God.

  1098. You hear

  1099. that in

  1100. testimonies

  1101. from time

  1102. to time,

  1103. this

  1104. unexplainable

  1105. pull that

  1106. a person

  1107. feels to

  1108. go to

  1109. church or

  1110. to an

  1111. evangelistic

  1112. meeting or

  1113. simply to

  1114. open their

  1115. Bible and

  1116. read it,

  1117. or to

  1118. pray,

  1119. when for

  1120. years before

  1121. that they

  1122. didn't want

  1123. to do

  1124. any of

  1125. that.

  1126. They

  1127. thought it

  1128. was a

  1129. waste of

  1130. time.

  1131. But for

  1132. others of

  1133. us,

  1134. maybe we

  1135. don't

  1136. remember

  1137. feeling

  1138. drawn.

  1139. Maybe it

  1140. felt more

  1141. like a

  1142. careful

  1143. investigation

  1144. or a

  1145. long-thought-out

  1146. decision

  1147. to follow

  1148. Jesus.

  1149. Or maybe it

  1150. was something

  1151. that we

  1152. just remember

  1153. believing

  1154. ever since

  1155. we were

  1156. a kid.

  1157. Every person

  1158. has a

  1159. different

  1160. story and

  1161. different

  1162. feelings that

  1163. went along

  1164. with that

  1165. story of

  1166. how they

  1167. first came

  1168. to be a

  1169. follower of

  1170. Jesus.

  1171. But however

  1172. it happened

  1173. for you that

  1174. you came to

  1175. confess,

  1176. like Peter

  1177. does,

  1178. that Jesus

  1179. is the

  1180. Holy One

  1181. of God,

  1182. Jesus wants

  1183. you to

  1184. know that

  1185. you didn't

  1186. come to

  1187. that all

  1188. by yourself.

  1189. Whether you

  1190. realized it or

  1191. felt it or

  1192. not,

  1193. you had

  1194. help,

  1195. God the

  1196. Father was

  1197. acting,

  1198. granting,

  1199. blessing,

  1200. revealing,

  1201. and drawing

  1202. you.

  1203. And so

  1204. trusting these

  1205. words of

  1206. Jesus as

  1207. the truth,

  1208. we ought

  1209. to thank

  1210. God that

  1211. he has

  1212. drawn us,

  1213. that he

  1214. has granted

  1215. it to us

  1216. to come

  1217. to Jesus

  1218. and have

  1219. life.

  1220. Perhaps

  1221. we've taken

  1222. this for

  1223. granted.

  1224. Maybe we've

  1225. even been

  1226. guilty of

  1227. thinking that

  1228. God is

  1229. obligated to

  1230. draw us,

  1231. to grant

  1232. us to

  1233. come.

  1234. Maybe even

  1235. that he owes

  1236. it to us.

  1237. But the

  1238. very fact that

  1239. Jesus says

  1240. it like this,

  1241. that he brings

  1242. it up,

  1243. should make it

  1244. clear that God

  1245. doesn't owe

  1246. it to us

  1247. at all.

  1248. It's a

  1249. gift of

  1250. grace.

  1251. Maybe you're

  1252. here this

  1253. morning and

  1254. you're not

  1255. sure where

  1256. you stand

  1257. with Jesus.

  1258. Maybe you're

  1259. worried about

  1260. whether God

  1261. has drawn

  1262. you or is

  1263. drawing you

  1264. or whether

  1265. he has

  1266. granted you

  1267. to come to

  1268. Jesus or

  1269. whether he

  1270. will grant

  1271. you to

  1272. come.

  1273. If that's

  1274. you this

  1275. morning,

  1276. I want to

  1277. encourage you.

  1278. Jesus himself

  1279. seemed quite

  1280. content to

  1281. leave what

  1282. God the

  1283. Father does

  1284. in the

  1285. Father's

  1286. capable hands.

  1287. And so

  1288. should we.

  1289. Try as we

  1290. may, we

  1291. may not be

  1292. able to

  1293. detect or

  1294. to feel the

  1295. unseen work

  1296. of God

  1297. inside of us

  1298. or inside of

  1299. other people.

  1300. But we can

  1301. rest assured,

  1302. as Jesus did,

  1303. that he is

  1304. at work in

  1305. the hearts of

  1306. people.

  1307. Granting,

  1308. revealing,

  1309. blessing,

  1310. drawing.

  1311. And we

  1312. can have

  1313. confidence from

  1314. many of the

  1315. other scriptures,

  1316. we're not

  1317. going to look

  1318. at them this

  1319. morning,

  1320. that God

  1321. is merciful,

  1322. he is

  1323. gracious,

  1324. he is

  1325. compassionate,

  1326. and he is

  1327. loving,

  1328. and he

  1329. desires to

  1330. save people.

  1331. And so

  1332. at the end

  1333. of it all,

  1334. we need only

  1335. concern

  1336. ourselves

  1337. with this.

  1338. Do I

  1339. believe

  1340. that Jesus

  1341. is the

  1342. Holy One

  1343. of God?

  1344. Do I

  1345. believe it?

  1346. Will I

  1347. follow him

  1348. and accept

  1349. him as my

  1350. Messiah?

  1351. God

  1352. God

  1353. God

  1354. will

  1355. do I

  1356. know?

  1357. There's a

  1358. beautiful promise

  1359. of assurance

  1360. that Jesus

  1361. gives in the

  1362. midst of all

  1363. this.

  1364. Down in

  1365. verse

  1366. 37,

  1367. he says,

  1368. whoever comes

  1369. to me,

  1370. I will never

  1371. drive away.

  1372. God

  1373. and so if

  1374. you have

  1375. not come

  1376. to Jesus,

  1377. come to

  1378. him.

  1379. Believe in

  1380. him.

  1381. Whoever

  1382. does,

  1383. if you

  1384. do,

  1385. he will

  1386. never

  1387. drive you

  1388. away or

  1389. cast you

  1390. out.

  1391. That's the

  1392. promise of

  1393. the Lord

  1394. Jesus.

  1395. Let's

  1396. pray.

  1397. Amen.

  1398. Father in

  1399. heaven,

  1400. we thank

  1401. you for

  1402. these words

  1403. and we

  1404. ask that

  1405. you would

  1406. press them

  1407. into our

  1408. hearts.

  1409. We say

  1410. thank you

  1411. to you

  1412. for drawing

  1413. us and

  1414. for granting

  1415. to us who

  1416. have come

  1417. to you

  1418. that we

  1419. have come,

  1420. that we

  1421. do see,

  1422. as Peter

  1423. saw,

  1424. what many

  1425. did not

  1426. and do

  1427. not today.

  1428. We pray

  1429. and ask

  1430. that you

  1431. would help

  1432. us to

  1433. keep this

  1434. in mind

  1435. as we

  1436. think of

  1437. others

  1438. around us

  1439. who don't

  1440. know you

  1441. and who

  1442. do not

  1443. believe.

  1444. Help us

  1445. to understand

  1446. how we

  1447. ought to

  1448. reach out

  1449. to them

  1450. and speak

  1451. to them

  1452. in light

  1453. of these

  1454. words.

  1455. Give us

  1456. wisdom

  1457. and help

  1458. us to be

  1459. salt and

  1460. light,

  1461. as we've

  1462. talked about

  1463. earlier this

  1464. morning in

  1465. Sunday

  1466. school,

  1467. to our

  1468. world,

  1469. to our

  1470. community,

  1471. to our

  1472. neighbors.

  1473. We thank

  1474. you that

  1475. you are

  1476. a gracious

  1477. and merciful

  1478. and loving

  1479. God.

  1480. And we

  1481. say this in

  1482. Jesus' name.

  1483. Amen.
