  1. If you have your Bible with you, you can open it up to Isaiah chapter 9.

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  2. And with Christmas only 12 days away,

  3. I had wanted to spend this time this morning reflecting on something that would prepare us to celebrate as Christmas draws near.

  4. But again and again, there was a second thing that kept coming up for me this week,

  5. even in the past couple weeks, and that's this whole issue of government.

  6. This week alone I had four people, actually not from this church but outside of it,

  7. who wanted to talk to me or get in touch with me in some form about when we as Christians should disobey the government.

  8. Maybe some of you were invited to go to the protest that was held yesterday in Regina.

  9. This past week we saw the Alberta government increase restrictions upon their citizens

  10. and make it illegal for anyone who doesn't live alone to gather with another household this Christmas.

  11. And so as much as I've been wanting to focus on Christmas this past week,

  12. what it is that we're about to celebrate,

  13. my attention keeps getting pulled back to government and to COVID.

  14. And I will say I'm saddened by how many in the church,

  15. many Christians are handling themselves in the midst of this situation.

  16. Some are arguing, some are fighting,

  17. others are rallying supporters to protest and calling those who won't join them spineless and cowardly.

  18. Some are saying that we have a Christian duty to defy the government and engage in civil disobedience

  19. and that those of us who aren't are being unfaithful to God.

  20. This past week I was scrolling through Facebook on Scott Moe's own post

  21. and finding people that were saying,

  22. shame on you, Scott Moe,

  23. and then clicking on their profile and they're a Christian.

  24. The pride, the arrogance, the selfishness, the foolishness,

  25. the impatience of Christian people is leaking onto the stage of our nation for all to see.

  26. And we've already seen a few churches capture the attention and scorn of many

  27. for deliberately defying public health orders.

  28. And I can tell you as a pastor watching this,

  29. this is very sad.

  30. A lot of people are pointing their fingers and their words at the government.

  31. Amazingly, almost everyone seems to think that they know better

  32. just how to govern a million people here in Saskatchewan

  33. than the current people that we have in government.

  34. I've been thinking about that old Christmas classic,

  35. It's a Wonderful Life.

  36. Some of you will have seen that.

  37. George Bailey, in a moment of frustration,

  38. expresses his wish that he had never been born.

  39. Things are going so bad for him.

  40. And an angel comes and gives him the chance

  41. to see what his life would be like

  42. if he had never been born,

  43. what the people in his community would be like.

  44. I wish we could give that opportunity

  45. to everyone who thinks that they know better than the government.

  46. The opportunity for all these people

  47. to see what it would be like

  48. to have been the Premier of Saskatchewan

  49. or the Chief Medical Officer for the past year.

  50. It doesn't matter that none of us know a thing

  51. about provincial leadership and administration

  52. or about immunology or about virology.

  53. Somehow, many of us think that we are an expert

  54. because we've been sitting at home

  55. reading things on our devices,

  56. our computer, on the internet, on email,

  57. finding out what's really going on

  58. and how we should really be handling this.

  59. And more than anything today,

  60. I think what the Church of Jesus Christ needs to do

  61. is to simply turn off our phones,

  62. to shut down the Facebook, the email, the YouTube,

  63. and open our Bibles up

  64. and read them

  65. and get on our knees and pray.

  66. If Christians all across Canada

  67. would simply do that for the next month,

  68. I think we'd be amazed at how clearly

  69. God would speak to us

  70. about how we ought to live in these days.

  71. I think we'd be amazed at how much joy

  72. we'd find in the midst of what's going on,

  73. how much strength.

  74. I think we'd be amazed at how much encouragement

  75. and wisdom God has already given us

  76. for such a time as this.

  77. I got thinking, you know,

  78. do you want to have peace in the midst of all this?

  79. Do you want to get that grumblebee out of your bonnet?

  80. Do you want to see your anger and frustration

  81. melt away into peace and joy?

  82. My advice is turn off the internet,

  83. open your Bible,

  84. and feast.

  85. Too many of us are simply letting the news,

  86. our Facebook friends,

  87. preachers we don't even know,

  88. YouTube,

  89. guys sitting in their basements recording videos,

  90. we're letting them tell us what and how to think,

  91. and God himself

  92. is being drowned out

  93. by all these voices

  94. and is not getting through to us.

  95. Everybody wants to blame the government

  96. and criticize the government.

  97. It's the government's fault.

  98. This policy is unfair.

  99. This is unjust.

  100. How come they have applied these rules

  101. to this sector

  102. and not to this one?

  103. This policy takes away my freedoms.

  104. Let me be clear,

  105. I'm not here to defend the government this morning.

  106. But we will open the scriptures

  107. and look at what they have to say

  108. about government

  109. and civil disobedience

  110. after we have celebrated Christmas.

  111. I think that's really important for us.

  112. This morning,

  113. I want to point our hearts

  114. to a passage

  115. that gives us a reason

  116. to celebrate

  117. at Christmas

  118. even as we think of

  119. government.

  120. long ago,

  121. God spoke through the prophet Isaiah

  122. and he said this.

  123. This is Isaiah 8.22.

  124. Then they will look toward the earth

  125. and see only distress

  126. and darkness

  127. and fearful gloom.

  128. Nevertheless,

  129. verse 1 of 9,

  130. Nevertheless,

  131. there will be

  132. no more gloom

  133. for those who are in distress.

  134. The people walking in darkness

  135. have seen

  136. a great light.

  137. On those living in the land

  138. of deep darkness,

  139. a light

  140. has dawned.

  141. Down to verse 6.

  142. For to us,

  143. a child is born.

  144. To us,

  145. a son

  146. is given.

  147. And the government

  148. will be on his shoulders.

  149. And he will be called

  150. Wonderful Counselor,

  151. Mighty God,

  152. Everlasting Father,

  153. Prince of Peace.

  154. Of the greatness

  155. of his government

  156. and peace,

  157. there will be no end.

  158. He will reign

  159. on David's throne

  160. and over his kingdom,

  161. establishing

  162. and upholding it

  163. with justice

  164. and righteousness

  165. from that time on

  166. and forever.

  167. the zeal

  168. of the Lord Almighty

  169. will accomplish this.

  170. Many of us

  171. are used to hearing

  172. these words at Christmas,

  173. but I wonder

  174. if this Christmas

  175. these words

  176. don't mean a little bit more.

  177. Isaiah spoke first

  178. about the darkness

  179. of his day.

  180. He lived in dark times

  181. and the people of Israel

  182. were about to go through

  183. even darker times

  184. in the near future.

  185. He spoke of how

  186. this darkness

  187. would persist

  188. until a future day

  189. when a great light

  190. would come

  191. over the horizon.

  192. These words remind me

  193. that even though

  194. we live in dark times today,

  195. they're not as dark

  196. as times in the past.

  197. Why?

  198. Because the great light

  199. has dawned.

  200. Jesus,

  201. this child

  202. that was promised

  203. long ago,

  204. this son

  205. who was to be given

  206. has come

  207. and has been given.

  208. 2,000 years ago

  209. in Bethlehem,

  210. he was born.

  211. And this is what

  212. we celebrate at Christmas.

  213. But what's so wonderful

  214. about this prophecy

  215. is that it's about

  216. so much more

  217. than just a birth.

  218. you might wonder,

  219. how can we celebrate

  220. Christmas this year

  221. without a large gathering

  222. with family?

  223. How can we do it

  224. without a whole bunch

  225. of people together

  226. exchanging gifts,

  227. without big turkey dinners,

  228. amidst all these restrictions?

  229. How can we have joy

  230. in the midst of all this?

  231. we can celebrate

  232. and have joy

  233. because Christmas

  234. is not just about a birth.

  235. It's about the birth

  236. of a king

  237. who will someday

  238. put Scott Moe

  239. and Justin Trudeau

  240. and Joe Biden

  241. or their successors

  242. out of a job.

  243. Do you hear that

  244. in these words?

  245. For to us

  246. a child is born,

  247. to us a son is given,

  248. and the government

  249. will be

  250. on his shoulders.

  251. I love this sentence

  252. which God spoke

  253. long ago

  254. through Isaiah.

  255. It starts with a birth

  256. and it ends

  257. with a statement

  258. about government.

  259. It makes no mention

  260. of the several thousand

  261. years in between

  262. because they do not

  263. alter the reality

  264. of who this child is

  265. and what he will

  266. someday do.

  267. The government

  268. will be

  269. on his shoulders.

  270. Are you dissatisfied

  271. with your current government?

  272. I've got news for you

  273. this Christmas.

  274. You're going to get

  275. a new one.

  276. This child

  277. who was born

  278. in Bethlehem

  279. 2,000 years ago,

  280. the man who

  281. sojourned

  282. through the land

  283. of Israel,

  284. was crucified

  285. by a coalition

  286. of governments.

  287. That same man

  288. rose up from death

  289. and ascended

  290. to the throne

  291. of heaven

  292. and in God's

  293. wise planning

  294. and perfect timing,

  295. that same man

  296. will return

  297. with great power

  298. and glory

  299. and take up

  300. the responsibility

  301. of governing

  302. the great kingdom

  303. of God

  304. here on this earth.

  305. You're getting

  306. a new government.

  307. Jesus will

  308. someday return

  309. and he will

  310. come to shoulder

  311. all of the

  312. responsibility

  313. of oversight,

  314. decision making,

  315. policy creation,

  316. law enforcement

  317. and leadership

  318. for all of

  319. God's people.

  320. The governments

  321. of that day

  322. when he returns

  323. will be

  324. displaced

  325. and superseded

  326. by the king

  327. of kings.

  328. What will this

  329. government be like?

  330. Isaiah tells us,

  331. of the greatness

  332. of his government

  333. and peace.

  334. There will be

  335. no end.

  336. Greatness.

  337. Let's think about

  338. that for a minute.

  339. All of the

  340. great governments

  341. of the past

  342. have at least

  343. one thing in common.

  344. No matter how

  345. great they became,

  346. their greatness

  347. came to an end.

  348. Think of the

  349. Egyptian empire.

  350. The pyramids

  351. came to an end.

  352. Think of

  353. Alexander the Great

  354. and what he

  355. managed to

  356. accomplish

  357. in his brief

  358. window in history.

  359. It came to

  360. an end.

  361. Think of the

  362. greatness of

  363. the Roman empire

  364. at its heights.

  365. Military strength

  366. unrivaled.

  367. It came to

  368. an end.

  369. We might even

  370. think of

  371. present day

  372. governments

  373. who can rival

  374. the greatest

  375. nations of

  376. our world

  377. today.

  378. Yet for all

  379. their greatness

  380. there will

  381. come a day

  382. when their

  383. greatness

  384. will fade

  385. and will

  386. recede

  387. before this

  388. one great

  389. government.

  390. The kingdom

  391. of Christ.

  392. The kingdom

  393. of God.

  394. His kingdom

  395. when he returns

  396. will be great.

  397. His government,

  398. his governing

  399. will be great.

  400. And it will go

  401. from great

  402. to the greatest

  403. of all time.

  404. and from there

  405. it will continue

  406. to become

  407. greater

  408. and increase

  409. in greatness

  410. forever.

  411. Of the greatness

  412. of his government

  413. there will be

  414. no end.

  415. It will never

  416. be taken over.

  417. It will never

  418. fall.

  419. It will never

  420. be superseded

  421. by another kingdom,

  422. people,

  423. nation,

  424. leader.

  425. not ever.

  426. Not only

  427. greatness

  428. but peace.

  429. Of peace

  430. that comes

  431. about

  432. from his

  433. government.

  434. There will be

  435. no end.

  436. If you ever

  437. take the time

  438. as my wife

  439. has

  440. to read

  441. through a brief

  442. summary of the

  443. world's history

  444. one thing

  445. will stand out

  446. to you

  447. for sure.

  448. There has been

  449. a lot

  450. of wars

  451. again

  452. and again

  453. and again.

  454. There are

  455. these seasons

  456. in which

  457. people live

  458. in peace

  459. and wars

  460. and hostility

  461. has ceased

  462. and then it

  463. happens again.

  464. War comes.

  465. Hostilities

  466. happen.

  467. But when

  468. the child

  469. that was born

  470. in the manger

  471. in Bethlehem

  472. returns

  473. there will be

  474. peace

  475. forever.

  476. Not just

  477. the cessation

  478. of wars

  479. but the

  480. cessation

  481. of all

  482. conflicts

  483. fights

  484. arguments

  485. disputes

  486. no more

  487. COVID

  488. squabbles

  489. no more

  490. feeling

  491. unsettled

  492. about people

  493. in the world

  494. somewhere

  495. whose freedoms

  496. are being

  497. stripped away

  498. for this

  499. reason or that

  500. no more

  501. enemies

  502. or threats

  503. of any

  504. kind

  505. of the

  506. peace

  507. that comes

  508. with his

  509. governance

  510. there will

  511. be no

  512. end.

  513. what else?

  514. Isaiah

  515. says he

  516. will reign

  517. on David's

  518. throne

  519. and over

  520. his kingdom

  521. establishing

  522. and upholding

  523. it with

  524. justice

  525. justice

  526. that's

  527. something that

  528. we long

  529. for in our

  530. world today

  531. isn't it?

  532. No more

  533. corruption

  534. no more

  535. lies

  536. no more

  537. using

  538. positions

  539. of power

  540. to achieve

  541. personal

  542. benefits

  543. or to

  544. do

  545. favors

  546. for

  547. friends

  548. no more

  549. of the

  550. guilty

  551. getting off

  552. easy

  553. or free

  554. and never

  555. again

  556. the innocent

  557. being

  558. wrongly

  559. convicted

  560. justice

  561. from the

  562. time that

  563. he comes

  564. and establishes

  565. that kingdom

  566. from that

  567. time on

  568. and forever

  569. righteousness

  570. there's been a

  571. lot of talk

  572. in our day

  573. about governments

  574. trying

  575. or failing

  576. to do the

  577. right thing

  578. but when

  579. Christ

  580. the one

  581. who was

  582. born

  583. 2000 years

  584. ago

  585. returns

  586. he will

  587. not only

  588. know

  589. what's

  590. right

  591. he will

  592. establish

  593. what is

  594. right

  595. and he

  596. will

  597. uphold

  598. what is

  599. right

  600. from that

  601. time on

  602. it says

  603. and forever

  604. and so

  605. we have

  606. reasons

  607. big reasons

  608. to celebrate

  609. this Christmas

  610. to celebrate

  611. with all

  612. of our

  613. hearts

  614. because no

  615. matter what

  616. restrictions

  617. are on us

  618. from the

  619. government

  620. this will

  621. pass

  622. and a day

  623. is coming

  624. when we

  625. will have

  626. a new

  627. government

  628. a perfect

  629. government

  630. and we

  631. will have

  632. that

  633. forever

  634. the zeal

  635. of the

  636. Lord

  637. Almighty

  638. will accomplish

  639. this

  640. we might

  641. read this

  642. and think

  643. well that

  644. just

  645. sounds

  646. impossible

  647. how could

  648. we ever

  649. have an

  650. existence

  651. like that

  652. maybe that's

  653. the reason

  654. why God

  655. chose to

  656. paint us

  657. this picture

  658. here with

  659. broad brush

  660. strokes

  661. about the

  662. kind of

  663. government

  664. and kingdom

  665. it will be

  666. rather than

  667. getting into

  668. all the

  669. details

  670. maybe it'll

  671. look so

  672. new and

  673. unfamiliar

  674. to us

  675. that it

  676. would just

  677. blow our

  678. minds to

  679. even try

  680. to describe

  681. it

  682. we wouldn't

  683. even be able

  684. to comprehend

  685. it perhaps

  686. but lest we

  687. think for a

  688. moment that

  689. this is

  690. impossible

  691. this final

  692. statement

  693. reminds us

  694. that it

  695. is possible

  696. it's possible

  697. because of

  698. the one

  699. who will

  700. bring it

  701. about

  702. the zeal

  703. of the

  704. Lord

  705. Almighty

  706. will accomplish

  707. this

  708. he is

  709. the Lord

  710. Yahweh

  711. the creator

  712. the one

  713. who spoke

  714. our universe

  715. into existence

  716. he is

  717. almighty

  718. there's

  719. nothing

  720. that's

  721. impossible

  722. for him

  723. that he

  724. cannot do

  725. and by

  726. his

  727. zeal

  728. by his

  729. desire

  730. he will

  731. bring about

  732. this

  733. good

  735. with his

  736. chosen

  737. king

  738. and it

  741. and so

  742. we celebrate

  743. not just a

  744. birth at

  746. but a

  747. birth that

  748. changes

  785. try as

  786. they may

  787. just been

  788. unable to

  789. fix

  790. and so

  791. I want to

  792. encourage us

  793. to put our

  794. hope in

  795. that this

  796. Christmas

  797. and to

  798. truly rejoice

  799. one day

  800. this king

  801. who came

  802. long ago

  803. and was

  804. born in

  805. Bethlehem

  806. will come

  807. again

  808. in his

  809. words

  810. soon

  811. he will

  812. return

  813. and the

  814. government

  815. will be

  816. upon his

  817. shoulders

  818. and we

  819. will come

  820. to that

  821. moment

  822. where we

  823. will take

  824. up these

  825. words

  826. from

  827. revelation

  828. the kingdom

  829. of the

  830. world

  831. has become

  832. the kingdom

  833. of our

  834. Lord

  835. and of

  836. his

  837. Christ

  838. and he

  839. will reign

  840. forever

  841. and ever

  842. what a

  843. wonderful

  844. and glorious

  845. day

  846. that will

  847. be

  851. heaven

  853. you that

  854. you have

  855. given us

  856. hope

  857. and reason

  858. to celebrate

  859. centuries

  860. ago

  861. and we

  862. trust that

  863. you will

  864. do all

  865. that you

  866. have

  867. promised

  868. please help

  869. us in

  870. these days

  871. God not

  872. to be

  873. dragged down

  874. with

  875. discouragement

  876. not to be

  877. dragged into

  878. arguments and

  879. complaining

  880. help us to be

  881. filled with joy

  882. and full of

  883. hope

  884. make us a bright

  885. and shining light

  886. in the darkness

  887. all around us

  888. this Christmas

  889. we ask in

  890. Jesus name

  891. amen

  892. rumor
