  1. and open it up to the Gospel of John, chapter 7.

    John 7 chapter mention

  2. We're going back to our series through the Gospel of John,

  3. and it's been a few weeks since we were there,

  4. so we're going to take a few minutes just to recap all that we've heard and seen in John's Gospel.

  5. John's Gospel is the account of John of the story of Jesus.

  6. As we said at the beginning of the series, if the Apostle John could be here with us this morning

  7. and tell you the story of Jesus, this is what he would say.

  8. This is what he saw, what he heard, what he experienced.

  9. John began his account in a different place than the other Gospel writers did.

  10. He tells us that Jesus' story goes back to the very beginning.

  11. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

  12. John tells us that back then, before all things were made,

  13. this one, the Word, or the Son, he was with God, and he was God.

  14. John tells us that all things that have been created were created by and through him.

  15. And then he tells us that the Word, the Son, became flesh and lived among us.

  16. And we celebrated that just a few weeks ago at Christmas.

  17. And John said this, he said,

  18. We have seen his glory, glory as of the only begotten Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

  19. And so as we've been working our way through John, we've been looking to see,

  20. What did you see, John?

  21. What did you see of Jesus' glory?

  22. How did you see that he was full of grace and full of truth?

  23. From there, John took us to the shore of the Jordan River.

  24. We heard about John the Baptizer and his little run-in with the Jewish leaders

  25. that were sent from Jerusalem to see what was going on.

  26. We heard a little of what John had been saying.

  27. There's somebody great coming after me.

  28. He stands among you, even now.

  29. And we saw through John's eyes that moment when the Baptizer pointed to Jesus for the first time

  30. and said,

  31. Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

  32. This is the one I've been talking about.

  33. We heard about how some of Jesus' first disciples, as a result of that, began to follow Jesus.

  34. Andrew and Peter, Philip and Nathaniel.

  35. We heard a little of their expectation as they began to share the news with one another

  36. that we found the Messiah.

  37. We heard Jesus tell them,

  38. You guys haven't seen anything yet.

  39. Just wait.

  40. From there, John took us to Jesus' first public sign,

  41. the wedding at Cana,

  42. where he, in the back room, did an amazing miracle

  43. and turned a whole bunch of water into wine.

  44. Then we followed Jesus up to Jerusalem,

  45. where he marked the Passover with his disciples.

  46. And we saw how Jesus began to cause a stir as he flipped the tables in the temple courts of the sellers

  47. and drove the money changers out of the temple courts,

  48. which brought him into conflict with the religious leaders.

  49. We read about how Jesus did several signs during that visit to Jerusalem,

  50. and how many people believed, and yet the faith of these people was also suspect.

  51. Jesus wouldn't entrust himself to these people because he seemed to know things about them,

  52. even what they were thinking.

  53. John gave us the example of Jesus' conversation with Nicodemus,

  54. a member of the Jewish ruling council.

  55. And we listened as Jesus told this teacher of Israel about how he needed to be born again

  56. by the Spirit of God in order to enter the kingdom of God.

  57. From there we saw how there was this noticeable shift.

  58. Many of the baptizers' disciples were now going to Jesus.

  59. And the crowds were dwindling for John and increasing for Jesus.

  60. John the baptizer was kind of fading into the background,

  61. and Jesus was taking the spotlight and the attention of the whole nation.

  62. We saw how Jesus made this quick stopover in Samaria on his way back to Galilee,

  63. where he encountered the woman at the well

  64. and revealed himself to her as the Messiah and to the townspeople,

  65. and many believed.

  66. Then we saw him again in Cana of Galilee,

  67. and it was there that some tensions began to rise

  68. as Jesus started to come face to face

  69. with the unbelief of the people in his own region.

  70. It was there that he healed the royal official's son from a distance.

  71. After that, John skips ahead to another time

  72. that Jesus went up to Jerusalem for a festival.

  73. And we saw how Jesus healed the man who hadn't been able to walk for 38 years

  74. at the Pool of Siloam.

  75. And he did that on the Sabbath.

  76. And we watched as this brought Jesus into a very sharp dispute

  77. with the religious leaders.

  78. In fact, John told us then that even before this run-in,

  79. they had already been plotting to kill him.

  80. But now this was intensified even more.

  81. Jesus began to say some things to them

  82. in the hearing of others that really bothered them.

  83. He began to tell them about his unique, special relationship with God.

  84. A father-son relationship unlike anything we've ever heard or seen.

  85. Jesus said that the works that he's been doing are small beans

  86. compared to the kinds of works that the Father is going to give him to do in the future.

  87. Things like raising people from the dead to life

  88. and calling people out of their graves to judgment at the end.

  89. He said he will be the one who will judge on that day

  90. on behalf of his Father.

  91. He said those who believe in him will receive eternal life.

  92. And he began to expose and challenge the unbelief

  93. and the pride and the self-centeredness of the religious leaders.

  94. From there, Jesus went back to Galilee.

  95. He crossed over to the other side of the sea.

  96. And John tells us that there was a massive crowd following him around,

  97. numbering over 5,000 people.

  98. And we saw how Jesus amazed them all by making bread and fish

  99. enough to feed the whole lot of them out in the middle of nowhere

  100. with nothing but a boy's lunch.

  101. We watched as Jesus sent his disciples back across the lake

  102. only to join them later on in the middle of the night

  103. walking out to them on the water

  104. in the middle of a storm.

  105. Then when they were back on the other side,

  106. we listened as many of the crowd from the previous day

  107. caught up with Jesus.

  108. And Jesus talked with them in the synagogue.

  109. And he challenged them to really read and understand

  110. the signs that he was doing correctly

  111. and to believe in him.

  112. He told them that he was the bread of life

  113. that had been sent down from God,

  114. from heaven to give life to the world.

  115. And we saw as that conversation went from tense

  116. to an all-out argument.

  117. How can this man give us his flesh to eat?

  118. Some said.

  119. After that, we watched as many of Jesus' followers left him

  120. and decided they were done following Jesus.

  121. But even though many left him,

  122. the twelve and probably a few more

  123. stayed with him,

  124. the faithful few.

  125. So this is the story that we've heard from John

  126. up until this point.

  127. Let's turn our attention now to what happens next

  128. in John chapter 7,

    John 7 chapter mention

  129. starting in verse 1.

  130. After this, Jesus went around in Galilee.

  131. Galilee is that northern region

  132. right up there.

  133. He kind of has the towns of Cana

  134. and Capernaum and Nazareth up there.

  135. He was moving around there.

  136. He was conducting his ministry there.

  137. He was doing his signs.

  138. All that he has been doing.

  139. But up in this region in Galilee,

  140. he did not want to go about in Judea

  141. because the Jewish leaders there

  142. were looking for a way to kill him.

  143. So Jesus stayed up in this northern region of Galilee.

  144. Judea is down here, of course,

  145. where Jerusalem, the capital city, is.

  146. That's the place where the temple is.

  147. That's the place where all the religious leaders

  148. and the ruling council are headquartered.

  149. And that's the place where he is wanted the most.

  150. So he's staying up here in Galilee,

  151. conducting his ministry there.

  152. And it might be a little bit tempting

  153. to jump to conclusions here

  154. or to make assumptions.

  155. We might wonder,

  156. is Jesus afraid of their religious leaders?

  157. But of course, we can only guess

  158. at what's going on in Jesus' heart and mind.

  159. John only tells us that he didn't want to go there

  160. because they were looking for a way to kill him.

  161. Now, if it was me that they were looking for,

  162. you'd bet I'd be anxious.

  163. You bet I'd be afraid.

  164. I'd be thinking of how to get out of the country real quick.

  165. But we can't assume that Jesus feels

  166. or even thinks just like we do

  167. because as we've seen many times,

  168. he often doesn't.

  169. Verse two.

  170. But when the Jewish festival of tabernacles was near,

  171. John tells us that the festival of tabernacles was near.

  172. Throughout the year, there were several festivals,

  173. like this one, that they would have.

  174. And people from all over the land

  175. would go up to Jerusalem

  176. and mark these festivals

  177. just as God commanded the Israelites to do

  178. back in the days of Moses.

  179. And you can just imagine

  180. with all these people going up to celebrate

  181. and to worship, to mark the festival,

  182. this is going to be interesting.

  183. The tensions have never been as high

  184. as they are now between Jesus

  185. and the religious leaders.

  186. Jesus is a wanted man.

  187. They want him dead.

  188. And so will Jesus head back down to Jerusalem

  189. yet again for the festival

  190. even while they're trying to kill him?

  191. Verse three.

  192. Jesus' brothers said to him,

  193. leave Galilee and go to Judea

  194. so that your disciples there may see the works you do.

  195. No one who wants to become a public figure

  196. acts in secret.

  197. Since you're doing these things,

  198. show yourself to the world.

  199. So as the day of the festival is drawing near,

  200. Jesus' brothers tell him to go down to Judea,

  201. the very region that he's been avoiding.

  202. Why?

  203. They say so that your disciples there

  204. may see the works that you are doing.

  205. Now I'm not really sure

  206. just what Jesus' brothers are thinking here.

  207. At first it might seem like

  208. they're just simply giving him

  209. some good brotherly career advice.

  210. Jesus, you should go back to Judea.

  211. The festival will be starting soon

  212. and you should try and reconnect

  213. with some of your followers there.

  214. They need to see the things

  215. that you've been doing here in Galilee.

  216. They say,

  217. for no one who wants to become a public figure

  218. acts in secret.

  219. Since you're doing these things,

  220. show yourself to the world.

  221. On the surface,

  222. it kind of seems like reasonable advice,

  223. doesn't it?

  224. And truly, it's not unlike the advice

  225. that we might hear in our world today.

  226. If you want to make a name for yourself,

  227. you need to put yourself out there.

  228. You need to connect with your followers.

  229. But then John,

  230. the one telling the story here,

  231. says this,

  232. for even his own brothers

  233. did not believe in him.

  234. So there's something else going on here.

  235. The advice that they are

  236. probably,

  237. that they are giving

  238. probably contains a hint of cynicism.

  239. Perhaps they're saying these things

  240. with a little bit of mockery in them.

  241. To be honest,

  242. I'm not really sure

  243. what the tone of their voices is

  244. or what they are truly meaning here.

  245. But we kind of get a sense

  246. that it's probably negative.

  247. Like, come on, Jesus.

  248. If you are the Messiah,

  249. and you're doing all these amazing signs

  250. and miracles

  251. which confirm it,

  252. go down to Jerusalem

  253. and prove it.

  254. Make it official.

  255. Make it all happen.

  256. Get onto the world stage here.

  257. That's what the Messiah

  258. is supposed to do.

  259. Whatever they're thinking,

  260. John tells us

  261. that even though

  262. they were his brothers,

  263. they did not believe in him.

  264. That's maybe a surprising thing,

  265. isn't it?

  266. We kind of expect

  267. that if anyone would believe in Jesus,

  268. it would be his own brothers.

  269. The people who know him best.

  270. The people that he grew up with.

  271. And yet,

  272. just because they were close to him

  273. all those years,

  274. didn't mean

  275. that they believed in him.

  276. And it kind of leaves us to wonder,

  277. well,

  278. what did they believe about him?

  279. If they didn't believe

  280. that he was the Messiah

  281. sent from God,

  282. what did they believe about him?

  283. what are the alternatives?

  284. Did they believe that he was a con artist?

  285. Did he believe he had somehow perfected

  286. the art of fooling people

  287. with elaborate tricks?

  288. Did they believe that he was making claims

  289. that were not true?

  290. A deceiver?

  291. Or did they just think

  292. that he was out of his mind?

  293. We can't be sure here.

  294. But one thing stands out to me

  295. in all this,

  296. and it's that Jesus was truly human.

  297. So much so

  298. that his own brothers

  299. couldn't see past his flesh

  300. and bones

  301. to know that he was more than just a man.

  302. I don't know how they explained

  303. away the miracles that he did

  304. or maybe in their own warped thinking

  305. they kind of convinced themselves

  306. that he was just some kind of

  307. self-righteous older brother

  308. who was always looking down on them

  309. and exposing the things

  310. that they didn't want

  311. people to know about or see.

  312. I got thinking about this

  313. in terms of what's going on

  314. in our world today.

  315. With COVID and political upheaval,

  316. we know all too well

  317. how easily people can come

  318. to polar opposite viewpoints

  319. on things

  320. and just get real dug in

  321. about those things.

  322. Well, somebody's got to be right.

  323. There is truth and fact

  324. in all that's going on.

  325. But somehow,

  326. as it often happens with people,

  327. Jesus' brothers

  328. are just not seeing straight.

  329. Maybe they're just kind of,

  330. you know,

  331. putting up with him

  332. and his grand delusions.

  333. Or at best,

  334. maybe they just don't really know

  335. how he can do these miracles.

  336. Maybe they are hoping

  337. that he'll be successful,

  338. but they just kind of have their doubts

  339. and their reservations.

  340. They don't believe in him.

  341. How is it that Jesus' own brothers

  342. do not see the glory

  343. of the one and only Son

  344. who came from the Father?

  345. I think it harkens back

  346. to what Jesus said earlier

  347. to his followers

  348. just before this in chapter 6.

  349. John 6, verse 64.

    John 6:64

  350. Jesus said,

  351. Yet there are some of you

  352. who do not believe.

  353. Verse 65.

  354. This is why I told you

  355. that no one can come to me

  356. unless the Father has enabled them.

  357. unless it has been granted to them

  358. by the Father.

  359. There's more going on here.

  360. For some reason,

  361. at least for now,

  362. Jesus' brothers remain in the dark.

  363. Blind to the reality

  364. of just who their own brother is.

  365. So they give their advice to Jesus.

  366. The brothers do.

  367. And then Jesus gives

  368. his response to them.

  369. He replies in verse 6 to 8.

  370. Therefore Jesus told them,

  371. My time is not yet here.

  372. For you, any time will do.

  373. The world cannot hate you,

  374. but it hates me

  375. because I testify

  376. that its works are evil.

  377. You go up to the festival.

  378. I'm not going up to this festival

  379. because my time has not yet

  380. fully come.

  381. So Jesus says a lot here.

  382. And to be honest,

  383. I'm not entirely sure

  384. just what Jesus means

  385. by all of it.

  386. It's interesting.

  387. What is clear

  388. is that he tells his brothers

  389. that he's not going

  390. to this festival,

  391. at least not yet.

  392. Not now,

  393. as they've been encouraging him to do.

  394. And then he urges them

  395. to go on ahead of him.

  396. You guys go.

  397. I'm not going yet.

  398. And his reason

  399. for not going yet,

  400. it seems,

  401. has to do with timing.

  402. He says,

  403. My time is not yet here.

  404. For you,

  405. any time will do.

  406. What is Jesus referring to

  407. by my time?

  408. There are a couple

  409. different ideas here.

  410. One is that it's like

  411. what he says in other places

  412. when he says,

  413. My hour has not yet come.

  414. But probably the view

  415. that makes the most sense to me

  416. is that he's simply talking

  417. about the time to leave

  418. and go to the festival.

  419. And there's a couple

  420. good reasons for that.

  421. First,

  422. he doesn't use the word

  423. for hour

  424. like he does

  425. in the other places.

  426. Here he uses the word

  427. for time

  428. or it's a more general word,

  429. appointed time

  430. or season.

  431. And in addition to that,

  432. in the original language,

  433. you can see

  434. the clear emphasis

  435. on his pronouns.

  436. It kind of pops out to you

  437. in the way

  438. that it was phrased.

  439. My time is not yet here.

  440. For you,

  441. any time will do.

  442. In other words,

  443. what I think Jesus is saying

  444. is something like,

  445. you guys can go up

  446. to the festival anytime.

  447. Whether you go today

  448. or tomorrow,

  449. doesn't matter.

  450. But for me,

  451. there is an appointed time.

  452. And that time

  453. is not yet here.

  454. And this is maybe

  455. more similar

  456. to his statement

  457. about,

  458. in those other places,

  459. about his hour

  460. not yet having come.

  461. I think what Jesus

  462. is saying

  463. is that he is under

  464. a special constraint

  465. that his brothers

  466. are not.

  467. just as Jesus

  468. can't act

  469. or speak

  470. apart from what

  471. he sees his father doing

  472. and hears his father

  473. saying

  474. in some mysterious way

  475. that we don't understand.

  476. He is also bound

  477. or constrained

  478. to this certain time,

  479. this timeline

  480. by his father.

  481. Father and son

  482. acting in harmony

  483. and synchronization.

  484. And Jesus,

  485. the son,

  486. for his part,

  487. is in the role

  488. of submission

  489. to his father.

  490. So Jesus says,

  491. you guys go on ahead.

  492. My time to go up

  493. is not yet here.

  494. For you guys,

  495. it doesn't matter

  496. is what I think

  497. Jesus is saying.

  498. But then in the middle

  499. of all this,

  500. Jesus makes this statement

  501. about the world

  502. hating him.

  503. Somehow this factors

  504. into Jesus' timing

  505. as well.

  506. Jesus says,

  507. the world cannot hate you,

  508. but it hates me

  509. because I testify

  510. that its works

  511. are evil.

  512. Another statement

  513. of comparison

  514. and again,

  515. the emphasis

  516. is kind of on the pronouns,

  517. you versus me.

  518. The world cannot hate you.

  519. Why not?

  520. We're kind of left to wonder.

  521. Perhaps Jesus is implying

  522. that the world

  523. cannot hate them

  524. because they're a part

  525. of the world.

  526. I'm not really sure.

  527. But what is clear

  528. is why the world

  529. hates Jesus.

  530. He gives us the reason.

  531. He says,

  532. because I testify

  533. that its works

  534. are evil.

  535. In other words,

  536. there is a strong

  537. current of opposition

  538. to Jesus

  539. that factors into

  540. Jesus going into Judea

  541. and when he will go up

  542. to the festival.

  543. There are some

  544. who hate him

  545. and we know

  546. as we've heard

  547. in the story

  548. that this hatred

  549. has been building

  550. over the past while

  551. both from the religious leaders

  552. and now

  553. it's building

  554. amongst the people

  555. in the crowds

  556. that he's been talking to.

  557. Why?

  558. Why do they hate him?

  559. Jesus says

  560. they hate him

  561. because he has been

  562. testifying

  563. that their works

  564. are evil.

  565. What does Jesus

  566. mean by that?

  567. Well,

  568. it's maybe a little

  569. more difficult to see

  570. but this has been

  571. happening all along

  572. through the story

  573. right from the beginning.

  574. Jesus has been

  575. exposing

  576. the sinful thoughts

  577. and attitude

  578. and behaviors

  579. of the people.

  580. He's been,

  581. in a sense,

  582. shining the light

  583. on them

  584. and telling them

  585. that what they're thinking,

  586. what they're doing

  587. here and there

  588. is wrong,

  589. is sinful.

  590. In fact,

  591. in the Gospel of Mark,

  592. Mark just tells us

  593. quite plainly,

  594. right from the get-go,

  595. Jesus' message

  596. was this,

  597. repent

  598. and believe

  599. the good news.

  600. Repent,

  601. turn from your

  602. sinful ways,

  603. your wicked ways,

  604. and seek

  605. God's forgiveness.

  606. righteousness.

  607. We saw Jesus

  608. testifying

  609. that people's

  610. works were evil

  611. at the temple courts

  612. as Jesus

  613. flipped the tables

  614. and drove the sellers

  615. and exchangers out.

  616. Stop turning

  617. my father's

  618. house

  619. into a marketplace,

  620. he said.

  621. In other words,

  622. what you're doing

  623. here in the temple courts

  624. is evil.

  625. We saw it

  626. with Nicodemus

  627. in a much

  628. subtler

  629. way

  630. as Jesus

  631. essentially

  632. told him

  633. that despite

  634. how good

  635. he thinks

  636. he's been

  637. or what

  638. his position

  639. is,

  640. it's not

  641. good enough

  642. to enter

  643. the kingdom

  644. of God.

  645. He told

  646. Nicodemus

  647. about the

  648. unbelief

  649. in Nicodemus'

  650. own heart.

  651. We saw it

  652. with the Samaritan

  653. woman

  654. and how Jesus

  655. said that he

  656. knew about

  657. her past

  658. five relationships

  659. and about

  660. how she was

  661. with a man

  662. right now

  663. that she

  664. wasn't married

  665. to.

  666. He didn't

  667. even have

  668. to say

  669. that's wrong.

  670. She knew

  671. it.

  672. But Jesus

  673. did bring

  674. it up

  675. and he

  676. exposed it.

  677. I testify

  678. that its

  679. works are

  680. evil.

  681. We saw

  682. it with

  683. the crowd

  684. back in

  685. chapter five.

  686. Jesus

  687. said there,

  688. unless you

  689. people see

  690. signs and

  691. wonders,

  692. you will

  693. never believe.

  694. Again,

  695. exposing

  696. the evil,

  697. the stubbornness

  698. in their

  699. hearts

  700. as they

  701. refused to

  702. listen to

  703. him.

  704. We saw

  705. it with

  706. the man

  707. from the

  708. pool of

  709. Siloam

  710. that he

  711. healed on

  712. the Sabbath

  713. day.

  714. After Jesus

  715. had healed

  716. him,

  717. Jesus

  718. bumped into

  719. him again

  720. later that

  721. day at

  722. the temple

  723. and he

  724. said,

  725. see,

  726. you are

  727. well again.

  728. Stop

  729. sinning or

  730. something worse

  731. may happen

  732. to you.

  733. I testify

  734. that its

  735. works are

  736. evil.

  737. We saw

  738. it with the

  739. religious leaders

  740. that same

  741. day as

  742. Jesus told

  743. them about

  744. how they're

  745. not seeking

  746. God's

  747. glory,

  748. but instead

  749. they're

  750. seeking

  751. glory from

  752. one another.

  753. I testify

  754. that this

  755. world's

  756. works are

  757. evil.

  758. We saw

  759. it with

  760. the people

  761. from the

  762. feeding of

  763. the 5,000.

  764. When they

  765. came back

  766. across the

  767. lake,

  768. Jesus said

  769. to them,

  770. do not

  771. work for

  772. food that

  773. spoils,

  774. but for

  775. food that

  776. endures to

  777. eternal life.

  778. What you're

  779. seeking is

  780. all wrong.

  781. You're

  782. looking for

  783. me not

  784. because of

  785. the signs

  786. I did,

  787. but because

  788. you ate

  789. the loaves

  790. and had

  791. your fill.

  792. Again,

  793. Jesus

  794. testifying

  795. that their

  796. works are

  797. evil.

  798. It's not

  799. always explicitly

  800. talked about

  801. in John,

  802. but you can

  803. see hints

  804. of it all

  805. throughout.

  806. And it's

  807. going to

  808. happen even

  809. more as

  810. we go on.

  811. This was

  812. part of

  813. Jesus'

  814. ministry

  815. from start

  816. to finish.

  817. He

  818. proclaimed

  819. that people

  820. should repent

  821. and turn

  822. from their

  823. sinful ways,

  824. their wicked

  825. thoughts,

  826. attitudes,

  827. and as

  828. it says

  829. here,

  830. their

  831. works.

  832. He

  833. testified

  834. that

  835. people's

  836. works

  837. were

  838. evil

  839. in

  840. general

  841. ways,

  842. as he

  843. taught the

  844. people about

  845. how they

  846. should live

  847. righteously

  848. in the

  849. Sermon on

  850. the Mount.

  851. And he

  852. talked to

  853. people about

  854. how their

  855. works were

  856. evil in

  857. very personal

  858. ways,

  859. as he

  860. spoke with

  861. individuals

  862. about their

  863. very specific

  864. sinful

  865. behaviors.

  866. Jesus'

  867. message was

  868. not just

  869. God loves

  870. you and

  871. I love

  872. you.

  873. His

  874. message was

  875. those things,

  876. but it

  877. was also

  878. repent,

  879. turn from

  880. your sin,

  881. believe in

  882. me so

  883. that you

  884. will not

  885. perish and

  886. receive what

  887. you deserve

  888. for your

  889. sins.

  890. There are

  891. many in

  892. our world

  893. today who

  894. are trying

  895. to hide

  896. this little

  897. phrase,

  898. I testify

  899. that its

  900. works are

  901. evil.

  902. They're

  903. trying to

  904. say that

  905. Jesus only

  906. spoke about

  907. how he

  908. loved

  909. people,

  910. or that

  911. he was

  912. always

  913. affirming

  914. of people

  915. no matter

  916. how they

  917. lived.

  918. It's

  919. simply

  920. not

  921. true.

  922. Jesus

  923. talked

  924. about

  925. sin all

  926. the time,

  927. and he

  928. was not

  929. afraid to

  930. call people

  931. out for

  932. their sins.

  933. That's why

  934. they hate

  935. him.

  936. That's why

  937. they wanted

  938. to kill

  939. him.

  940. That's why

  941. they did

  942. go all

  943. the way.

  944. to taking

  945. his life

  946. when they

  947. executed him

  948. on the

  949. cross.

  950. They wanted

  951. to get

  952. rid of

  953. this man

  954. whom God

  955. had sent

  956. to shine

  957. the spotlight

  958. on their

  959. sin,

  960. on their

  961. evil thoughts

  962. and attitudes

  963. and works.

  964. God

  965. John has

  966. brought this

  967. dynamic to

  968. our

  969. attention

  970. back in

  971. chapter 3

  972. verse 19.

  973. This is

  974. the verdict.

  975. Light

  976. has come

  977. into the

  978. world,

  979. but people

  980. loved

  981. darkness

  982. instead of

  983. light

  984. because their

  985. deeds were

  986. evil.

  987. Everyone

  988. who does

  989. evil

  990. hates

  991. the light

  992. and will

  993. not come

  994. into the

  995. light

  996. for fear

  997. that their

  998. deeds will

  999. be exposed.

  1000. That's what's

  1001. going on

  1002. here.

  1003. Jesus

  1004. not only

  1005. exposing

  1006. the sin

  1007. of a

  1008. couple

  1009. people,

  1010. he's

  1011. exposing

  1012. the sins

  1013. of everyone

  1014. in all

  1015. kinds of

  1016. ways

  1017. and people

  1018. don't like

  1019. it

  1020. because they

  1021. love their

  1022. evil ways.

  1023. And this

  1024. is not just

  1025. something that

  1026. happened back

  1027. in Jesus'

  1028. day.

  1029. This is a

  1030. dynamic that

  1031. describes what's

  1032. going on

  1033. even today.

  1034. The world

  1035. still hates

  1036. Jesus when

  1037. they hear

  1038. him expose

  1039. and testify

  1040. that their

  1041. works are

  1042. evil.

  1043. Now,

  1044. Jesus is not

  1045. here in the

  1046. flesh,

  1047. but whenever

  1048. we,

  1049. as Christians,

  1050. teach or

  1051. preach or

  1052. tell others

  1053. of what he

  1054. said about

  1055. sin,

  1056. they don't

  1057. like it.

  1058. They recoil.

  1059. And if the

  1060. light comes to

  1061. shine too

  1062. brightly on

  1063. something in

  1064. particular that

  1065. they've been

  1066. doing,

  1067. they can get

  1068. mad and

  1069. angry.

  1070. Don't you

  1071. dare tell me

  1072. that how I'm

  1073. living is

  1074. wrong,

  1075. is evil.

  1076. Don't you

  1077. dare tell me

  1078. that someday

  1079. I'm going to

  1080. face judgment

  1081. or go to

  1082. hell.

  1083. But the

  1084. truth is that

  1085. Jesus talked

  1086. a lot about

  1087. hell.

  1088. Why?

  1089. Because it's

  1090. a real danger

  1091. for sinners

  1092. like you and

  1093. me.

  1094. Unless we

  1095. repent.

  1096. and believe

  1097. in Jesus.

  1098. Back to

  1099. Jesus'

  1100. answer to

  1101. his

  1102. brothers.

  1103. He says,

  1104. I'm not

  1105. going up yet

  1106. to the

  1107. festival because

  1108. my time is

  1109. not yet

  1110. here.

  1111. You go

  1112. on ahead.

  1113. Verse 9.

  1114. After he

  1115. had said

  1116. this,

  1117. he stayed

  1118. in Galilee.

  1119. However,

  1120. verse 10,

  1121. after his

  1122. brothers had

  1123. left for

  1124. the festival,

  1125. it says,

  1126. he went

  1127. also,

  1128. not publicly,

  1129. but in

  1130. secret.

  1131. And this

  1132. is how

  1133. things started

  1134. to go.

  1135. Now,

  1136. at the

  1137. festival,

  1138. this is

  1139. verse 11,

  1140. the Jewish

  1141. leaders were

  1142. watching for

  1143. Jesus and

  1144. asking,

  1145. where is he?

  1146. Among the

  1147. crowds,

  1148. there was

  1149. widespread

  1150. whispering

  1151. about him.

  1152. Some said,

  1153. he's a good

  1154. man.

  1155. Others

  1156. replied,

  1157. no,

  1158. he deceives

  1159. people.

  1160. But no

  1161. one would

  1162. say anything

  1163. publicly

  1164. about him

  1165. for fear

  1166. of the

  1167. leaders.

  1168. Can you

  1169. feel the

  1170. tension here

  1171. in Jerusalem

  1172. as thousands

  1173. are gathered

  1174. for this

  1175. festival?

  1176. Tension

  1177. between the

  1178. people who

  1179. came up

  1180. to attend

  1181. the festival?

  1182. Tension

  1183. between the

  1184. people and

  1185. the leaders?

  1186. Fearing that

  1187. they might be

  1188. caught on the

  1189. wrong side of

  1190. things?

  1191. There's

  1192. whispering

  1193. going on?

  1194. And we'll

  1195. find out what

  1196. happens next

  1197. Sunday.

  1198. But for this

  1199. morning, let's

  1200. take a few

  1201. minutes to just

  1202. reflect on what

  1203. we've heard so

  1204. far.

  1205. How does this

  1206. all apply to

  1207. us?

  1208. How can we

  1209. respond to it?

  1210. How can we

  1211. relate to it?

  1212. There are a

  1213. number of

  1214. points in

  1215. which this

  1216. applies to

  1217. us.

  1218. First, there's

  1219. a big focus

  1220. here on the

  1221. simple question

  1222. of who is

  1223. Jesus.

  1224. Everybody in

  1225. Jerusalem is

  1226. talking about

  1227. him, whispering

  1228. about him, and

  1229. different people

  1230. have their ideas

  1231. about him.

  1232. He's a good

  1233. man.

  1234. No, he's a

  1235. deceiver.

  1236. Who is

  1237. Jesus?

  1238. Even Jesus'

  1239. brothers don't

  1240. believe that

  1241. Jesus is who

  1242. he has been

  1243. claiming to be.

  1244. All of this

  1245. really should

  1246. bring us to

  1247. consider for

  1248. ourselves, who

  1249. is Jesus?

  1250. Who do you

  1251. think he is?

  1252. Second, much

  1253. of this section

  1254. is focused on

  1255. Jesus'

  1256. relationship with

  1257. his brothers.

  1258. John shows us

  1259. that it is truly

  1260. possible to have

  1261. known, to have

  1262. known Jesus all

  1263. your life, and

  1264. yet not truly

  1265. know him.

  1266. That's kind of a

  1267. scary thought.

  1268. That was Jesus'

  1269. brothers.

  1270. I wonder if you

  1271. have any kind of

  1272. feeling that maybe

  1273. you can relate to

  1274. that.

  1275. Perhaps you've

  1276. known and heard

  1277. lots about Jesus

  1278. from the time you

  1279. were young.

  1280. You've been in the

  1281. church lots.

  1282. You're pretty sure

  1283. that you've got

  1284. Jesus figured out.

  1285. But do you see

  1286. him as a mere

  1287. man, like his

  1288. brothers did?

  1289. Or do you see

  1290. him as the one

  1291. who was sent

  1292. from God, the

  1293. son of God, the

  1294. Messiah, the king

  1295. who will someday

  1296. come back to

  1297. judge and to

  1298. rule our world?

  1299. This is really the

  1300. key issue here.

  1301. Do you believe

  1302. Jesus?

  1303. And I don't

  1304. mean just believe

  1305. that Jesus will

  1306. save you.

  1307. Many people

  1308. believe that.

  1309. But do you

  1310. really believe

  1311. Jesus and what

  1312. he said and

  1313. taught?

  1314. His brothers,

  1315. at least so

  1316. far, it says,

  1317. do not believe

  1318. in him.

  1319. Many of the

  1320. people in

  1321. Jerusalem think

  1322. that he's a

  1323. fraud and a

  1324. deceiver.

  1325. What about

  1326. you?

  1327. Do you

  1328. believe?

  1329. Jesus.

  1330. Fourth, do

  1331. you believe

  1332. what Jesus has

  1333. been saying to

  1334. everyone, to

  1335. the world?

  1336. Do you

  1337. believe him when

  1338. he says that

  1339. your works are

  1340. evil?

  1341. Do you

  1342. believe what

  1343. Jesus says,

  1344. that you are a

  1345. sinner who needs

  1346. to repent, to

  1347. turn from your

  1348. sinful ways, to

  1349. seek God's

  1350. forgiveness, or

  1351. else you will

  1352. perish?

  1353. Do you

  1354. believe that you

  1355. are guilty for

  1356. your sins against

  1357. God?

  1358. Do you believe

  1359. that you're in

  1360. real danger of

  1361. perishing in

  1362. hell because of

  1363. your sins?

  1364. Does this

  1365. message of Jesus

  1366. stir up hatred

  1367. for you in your

  1368. heart?

  1369. Or are you

  1370. ashamed of this

  1371. message of

  1372. Jesus?

  1373. Jesus?

  1374. Or do you

  1375. believe that

  1376. Jesus is

  1377. right and

  1378. that you

  1379. really are in

  1380. need of his

  1381. forgiveness and

  1382. saving?

  1383. Are you deeply

  1384. thankful in your

  1385. heart for what

  1386. Jesus did at the

  1387. cross to deal

  1388. with your evil

  1389. works?

  1390. I know I am.

  1391. finally, I

  1392. believe there's a

  1393. simple word of

  1394. encouragement here

  1395. for those of us

  1396. who have family

  1397. members who do

  1398. not believe in

  1399. Jesus.

  1400. Do you know

  1401. that Jesus knows

  1402. what it's like

  1403. to have family

  1404. members who do

  1405. not believe?

  1406. He has lived

  1407. with that reality.

  1408. And for him,

  1409. it was even more

  1410. personal because he

  1411. was the one that

  1412. they did not

  1413. believe in.

  1414. The Lord Jesus

  1415. hears your

  1416. prayers for

  1417. those in your

  1418. family who do

  1419. not believe.

  1420. His heart knows

  1421. deeply what you

  1422. are feeling for

  1423. them.

  1424. By God's grace,

  1425. there did come a

  1426. day when Jesus'

  1427. brothers came to

  1428. believe in him.

  1429. Acts 1,

    Acts 1:14

  1430. verse 14,

  1431. talks about how

  1432. the church was

  1433. all gathered

  1434. together after

  1435. Jesus had

  1436. ascended.

  1437. And it says,

  1438. they all joined

  1439. together constantly

  1440. in prayer,

  1441. along with the

  1442. women and Mary,

  1443. the mother of

  1444. Jesus,

  1445. and with Jesus'

  1446. brothers.

  1447. Talks about

  1448. there,

  1449. in those days,

  1450. Peter stood up

  1451. among the

  1452. believers.

  1453. Jesus' brothers

  1454. were among the

  1455. believers.

  1456. By God's grace,

  1457. there came a day

  1458. when Jesus'

  1459. brothers had a

  1460. change of heart

  1461. and a change of

  1462. mind towards him.

  1463. A day when they

  1464. knew that he was

  1465. so much more

  1466. than just their

  1467. brother.

  1468. father.

  1469. So do not lose

  1470. heart for those

  1471. family members

  1472. that you have

  1473. who do not

  1474. know the Lord.

  1475. They may not

  1476. believe in Jesus

  1477. today.

  1478. They may seem

  1479. blind or hard

  1480. to what you say

  1481. about him.

  1482. They may even

  1483. disapprove,

  1484. mock,

  1485. or look down

  1486. on you for

  1487. believing in

  1488. Jesus,

  1489. but don't give

  1490. up on them

  1491. yet.

  1492. Keep asking

  1493. the Lord Jesus

  1494. for their

  1495. salvation.

  1496. The power of

  1497. God's grace

  1498. and mercy

  1499. can soften

  1500. even the

  1501. hardest

  1502. of hearts.

  1503. Let's pray.

  1504. Father in

  1505. heaven,

  1506. thank you for

  1507. your words

  1508. to us.

  1509. Please cause

  1510. them to sink

  1511. deep down

  1512. into our

  1513. hearts and

  1514. help us to

  1515. know what

  1516. we can do

  1517. with them,

  1518. who we can

  1519. share them

  1520. with.

  1521. We do ask

  1522. that you would

  1523. put in our

  1524. hearts those

  1525. in our

  1526. families and

  1527. in our

  1528. community who

  1529. don't believe

  1530. in you.

  1531. Show us how

  1532. we can reach

  1533. out to them

  1534. and continue

  1535. to love

  1536. them and to

  1537. speak the

  1538. truth with

  1539. gentleness and

  1540. respect to

  1541. them.

  1542. We ask this

  1543. in Jesus'

  1544. name.

  1545. Amen.
