  1. So, John chapter 7, and we left off last Sunday in about verse 32.

    John 7 chapter mention

  2. I'm just going to...

  3. So, we made it down to verse 32, and as we got there, we saw that things were starting

  4. to really heat up between Jesus and the crowd that was gathered.

  5. Jesus is in the temple courts, and he's teaching the many who have come to gather for the Jewish

  6. Festival of Tabernacles, and we saw last Sunday how there was quite a combination of responses

  7. within the crowd to Jesus.

  8. Verse 30, at this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his

  9. hour had not yet come.

  10. Still many in the crowd believed in him.

  11. They said, when the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man?

  12. The implied answer, I don't think so.

  13. He must be the one.

  14. So, some are looking to get Jesus arrested, while others are expressing confidence and

  15. faith that he's the Messiah.

  16. Verse 32, the Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him.

  17. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.

  18. So, the Pharisees, some of them are here in the crowd, listening to all that Jesus is saying.

  19. They're hearing all the whisperings of the people in the crowd.

  20. They're hearing some of those people who are saying, look, here he is, and the religious

  21. leaders aren't saying a word to him.

  22. Maybe they've concluded that he is the Messiah.

  23. And the Pharisees who are here listening to this, they go back to the chief priests, the leaders

  24. of the Pharisees.

  25. And in turn, the temple guards are sent out to arrest Jesus.

  26. The word for guards, in the original language, it's kind of like our word for attendance.

  27. From what we know, these men were descended from Levi, just like the priests and everyone

  28. else who served in and around the temple were supposed to be.

  29. So, when you hear guards or temple police, as some translations say, it's probably best

  30. not to think of them as thugs with shields and spears or as rent-a-cops or as, you know,

  31. the British royal guard with those big black fair-fur caps just standing motionless at the entrance

  32. all day long.

  33. Exactly what these guards did, we don't know all the details.

  34. But they seem to take direction from the chief priests and religious leaders, and they seem

  35. to be mainly employed in matters related to the Jewish law, enforcing that, and keeping

  36. order at the temple.

  37. So, the religious leaders, they're thinking, all right, this has gone far enough, this is

  38. getting out of hand.

  39. Jesus is beginning to sway some of the people here.

  40. We've got to put a stop to this.

  41. We've got to bring Jesus in.

  42. So, they send the temple guards out to arrest Jesus.

  43. So, what happens next?

  44. Well, John, the one who is telling the story here, decides to hold us in suspense for just

  45. a little bit.

  46. Instead of telling us right away, he flips back to what's, back to Jesus and what's going

  47. on in the temple courts, I think probably while all this is happening.

  48. Jesus said,

  49. It's kind of a mysterious thing to say, isn't it?

  50. Almost like something out of a movie that gets said before the main character goes into hiding.

  51. Jesus says,

  52. My time with you is short, and then I'm going to the one who sent me.

  53. Of course, because we've been listening closely and following along with the story, we know

  54. what Jesus means.

  55. We know he means, I'm going to my Father, to God.

  56. He says,

  57. You will look for me, but you will not find me.

  58. Where I am going, you cannot come.

  59. And of course, the big question on everyone's mind is, well, where is that?

  60. Where are you talking about?

  61. Verse 35,

  62. So the crowd is perplexed by this.

  63. They can't seem to imagine that there's anywhere Jesus could go or hide where somebody wouldn't

  64. be able to find him or follow him.

  65. Some of them are speculating that maybe he even has plans to get out of the country, go

  66. traveling abroad, though even this idea seems unlikely.

  67. I mean, surely he wouldn't go and teach the Greeks, would he?

  68. What else could he possibly mean?

  69. Where I am, you cannot come.

  70. You will not find me.

  71. So Jesus tells him that he's soon to leave, to go away, and the crowd is kind of baffled

  72. by his words.

  73. Verse 37,

  74. On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice,

  75. Now before I read it, let's just notice that there does seem to be a shift in the narrative

  76. here.

  77. And we're kind of left to wonder, is this a different day than the day that the guards

  78. were sent to arrest Jesus?

  79. Or is this the same day?

  80. Is it that they went and Jesus was already gone for the day and they came back the next

  81. day, the last day of the festival?

  82. Or is this all happening on the same day and John's kind of shuffling things around, trying

  83. to bring it all together, things that are all in motion at once and help us see how this

  84. all came to a head on the last day?

  85. Again, is Jesus in the temple courts still?

  86. Or has he moved to another spot?

  87. It's not clearly spelled out in detail.

  88. But whatever the case, the guards are still there.

  89. They're on their mission to arrest Jesus, to bring him to the religious leaders.

  90. And John wants us to know that this is happening on the final day of the festival.

  91. So on the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice,

  92. Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.

  93. Whoever believes in me, as scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within

  94. them.

  95. Can you feel this moment?

  96. Can you feel the impact of these words on the crowd that has gathered?

  97. These are quite the words.

  98. They remind us of his conversation with the woman at the well.

  99. He talks about being thirsty, about getting a drink from him, about living water.

  100. And of course, if we've been listening carefully, we know Jesus is not just talking about physical,

  101. tangible water.

  102. His words obviously have a deeper meaning.

  103. Rivers of living water will flow from within the person who believes in me, he says.

  104. What does Jesus mean by that?

  105. Thankfully, John, the one who has written all this down for us, the one telling the story,

  106. he knows that there's some of us reading who probably need a little help here to understand

  107. what Jesus is talking about.

  108. So he explains it in verse 39.

  109. By this, he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive.

  110. Up to that time, the Spirit had not yet been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.

  111. So Jesus is talking in metaphor, maybe about something that none of us would have really guessed,

  112. unless we had John's help or had been there to ask Jesus about it.

  113. So what's all this about?

  114. Well, D.A. Carson, a Bible commentator, had some helpful thoughts here for me this week.

  115. He reminded me in his commentary that this was the festival of tabernacles, the festival of booths.

  116. Now, there's lots that we could dig into about the festival, but one of the things that Carson pointed out to me is that

  117. it was a time in which they remembered their journeys through the wilderness.

  118. During that festival, they were actually supposed to set up tents, little tabernacles, and live in them for several days.

  119. It was kind of a way for them to reflect back on how God had led their forefathers through the desert from Egypt into the Promised Land.

  120. And so part of the focus of the festival was on how God provided for the Israelites long ago in the wilderness.

  121. He provided manna for them to eat when they were hungry, and he provided water for them to drink when they were thirsty.

  122. Water was scarce in the desert, and thirst was felt pretty intensely by the people at many of the places they camped,

  123. because some of the places had very little water or even no water.

  124. I just read this past week how God led them to a place where there was no water at all,

  125. and then miraculously provided a flow of water to quench the thirst of the whole nation from a rock.

  126. And not only this, but apparently there were also some traditions, I didn't know about this before,

  127. that the Jewish people had at this festival pertaining to water.

  128. According to Carson, on the last day of the festival, they would fill a golden flagon, like a golden jug,

  129. with water from the Pool of Siloam, and then they would have this procession up to the temple

  130. with the high priest kind of leading them.

  131. And when they entered in through the water gate, there would be a sound of three blasts from the shofar, the trumpet.

  132. And then while everybody who was gathered there watched,

  133. the priests would kind of do a little procession with this water around the altar,

  134. and the temple choir would be there, they'd be singing the Hillel Psalms,

  135. the last psalms of the Book of Psalms,

  136. and then at the end everybody would shout out,

  137. give thanks to the Lord,

  138. and the water would be offered along with the morning sacrifice.

  139. Now this whole water in the jar thing was not prescribed in the Old Testament law,

  140. but it was apparently something that they did to commemorate and to celebrate,

  141. to give thanks for God's provision of water long ago in the wilderness.

  142. We could add to that understanding that there are also many places in the Old Testament scriptures

  143. where God uses the language of water as a symbol of cleansing,

  144. of giving renewal and life to his people,

  145. and even of the coming of the Spirit.

  146. The prophet Joel spoke of the day when the Spirit would be poured out

  147. in the last days upon the people.

  148. And so taking all these things together,

  149. suddenly we can get a bit of a sense as to why Jesus is suddenly talking about water.

  150. Why might he have said what he did?

  151. This is a time in which traditionally thirst and water is very much on the minds of the people.

  152. Many of them have traveled from far ways.

  153. They're not currently enjoying the convenience of their own well back home.

  154. The festival marks a time in which their ancestors experienced thirst

  155. and had their thirst quenched by God's gracious provision.

  156. And for those faithful few, there is a longing for God to fulfill that promise

  157. and to pour out his Spirit as he said he would long ago.

  158. Whether Jesus had already said some of these things or taught about these things, we don't know.

  159. But this loud cry that he makes to the people didn't just come out of nowhere.

  160. It's not totally without context.

  161. Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.

  162. Whoever believes in me, as scripture has said,

  163. rivers of living water will flow from within them.

  164. Jesus is calling anyone who feels that deep thirst within them,

  165. anyone who has that longing for God to meet their deepest needs,

  166. he's calling them to come to him and drink.

  167. To take his words into themselves to the deepest levels,

  168. to believe them, to trust him.

  169. Whoever believes in me, says Jesus,

  170. rivers of living water will flow from within them.

  171. I love this.

  172. Not just a river, but rivers, plural.

  173. Not just any water, but living water.

  174. The water which gives life.

  175. Not that stagnant stuff in the puddle over there.

  176. But the clear, cool, refreshing, revitalizing water that comes from the mountains in the river.

  177. And not just that these waters in the river will flow to them,

  178. but that they will flow forth from within them.

  179. Just as God's provision of water burst forth from the rock

  180. to quench the thirst of the whole nation,

  181. in the same way, rivers of living water will burst forth from inside you,

  182. from the depths, and flow forth.

  183. This is a pretty extravagant promise that Jesus is making.

  184. Perhaps you remember the words of David long ago in Psalm 23.

  185. He said, you anoint my head with oil.

  186. My cup overflows.

  187. The cup is full,

  188. and yet you continue to pour more blessing in until it runs over.

  189. Jesus kind of blows that metaphor out of the water.

  190. River, rivers will flow forth from within you.

  191. How is this possible?

  192. What does this mean?

  193. We're not the only ones wondering.

  194. John tells us that by this,

  195. Jesus means the Spirit.

  196. The Spirit of God.

  197. God will give His Spirit

  198. to dwell in you.

  199. And it's God's own Spirit in us

  200. who will be the source of these rivers

  201. of living water,

  202. which are flowing forth

  203. from the depths of our beings.

  204. But John tells us

  205. that the giving of this gift of the Spirit

  206. to those who thirst

  207. and come to believe in Him

  208. did not happen until

  209. later when Jesus was glorified.

  210. And we'll hear more about that later

  211. when we get to that in John.

  212. But now,

  213. John tells us about what the crowd is thinking

  214. as they hear these words.

  215. Verse 40.

  216. On hearing His words,

  217. some of the people said,

  218. surely this man is the prophet.

  219. Others said,

  220. he is the Messiah.

  221. Still others asked,

  222. how can the Messiah come from Galilee?

  223. Does not Scripture say

  224. that the Messiah will come

  225. from David's descendants

  226. and from Bethlehem,

  227. the town where David lived?

  228. Thus the people were divided

  229. because of Jesus.

  230. Some wanted to seize Him,

  231. but no one laid a hand on Him.

  232. So again,

  233. we see further division within the crowd.

  234. Jesus cries out

  235. with these wonderful words of invitation,

  236. these wonderful words of life,

  237. come to me,

  238. all you who are thirsty

  239. and drink.

  240. Believe in me.

  241. And the response is quite mixed.

  242. Some who hear this

  243. seem convinced

  244. that He is the prophet,

  245. like the ultimate prophet

  246. promised long ago

  247. through Moses.

  248. They're thinking,

  249. He does speak

  250. the very words of God,

  251. just like the prophets of old did.

  252. Others seem convinced

  253. that He's the Messiah.

  254. They're thinking more

  255. in terms of the ultimate king

  256. that God promised long ago.

  257. But then still others

  258. are disagreeing with that.

  259. He can't be the Messiah.

  260. The scriptures say clearly

  261. that the Messiah

  262. will be descended from David,

  263. will come from the village

  264. of Bethlehem,

  265. but this man is from Galilee.

  266. And I can't help but think,

  267. what the irony of this objection.

  268. Again, it just goes to show

  269. that this crowd

  270. does not know Jesus

  271. as well as they think they do.

  272. As the other gospel writers

  273. make very clear,

  274. He is in fact

  275. a blood descendant of David.

  276. His whole genealogy

  277. is listed out

  278. in other gospels.

  279. And He was in fact

  280. born in Bethlehem,

  281. a true history

  282. which can be corroborated

  283. by a whole bunch

  284. of different witnesses.

  285. Even though He now resides

  286. in the north,

  287. in Galilee,

  288. the scripture will be fulfilled.

  289. The scepter will not

  290. depart from Judah

  291. because Jesus is

  292. of the line of Judah,

  293. the tribe of Judah.

  294. He is a son of David,

  295. the son of David,

  296. just as the angel said to Mary.

  297. So it was a mixed response

  298. from the crowd.

  299. And again,

  300. Jesus tells us,

  301. John tells us,

  302. that they wanted to seize Jesus,

  303. but no one laid a hand on Him.

  304. Well finally,

  305. let's find out

  306. what happened

  307. with the temple guards

  308. who were also there that day.

  309. Verse 45,

  310. finally the temple guards

  311. went back to the chief priests

  312. and the Pharisees

  313. who asked them,

  314. why didn't you bring Him in?

  315. No one ever spoke

  316. the way this man does,

  317. the guards replied.

  318. I love that.

  319. These guards

  320. also heard

  321. what Jesus said that day

  322. when He cried out.

  323. I got thinking,

  324. you know,

  325. they could have given

  326. a different reason here.

  327. They could have said,

  328. well, we didn't arrest Him

  329. because we thought

  330. it might start a riot

  331. and it looked like

  332. many in the crowd

  333. were believing Him.

  334. They could have said that.

  335. But no,

  336. instead they chose

  337. to say,

  338. we didn't arrest Him

  339. because no man

  340. has ever spoken

  341. the way this man does.

  342. They chose not to arrest

  343. Jesus that day

  344. because they were listening

  345. to what He was saying.

  346. And maybe,

  347. just maybe,

  348. they had come

  349. to believe in Him too

  350. or were on their way.

  351. I don't want to speculate

  352. too much,

  353. but they seemed

  354. to regard Jesus

  355. well enough

  356. that they chose

  357. to defy

  358. the orders

  359. of the ones

  360. who sent them.

  361. Perhaps even knowing

  362. that there could be

  363. consequences.

  364. The response

  365. of the leaders

  366. to this

  367. is very telling.

  368. Verse 47,

  369. You mean

  370. He has deceived you also?

  371. The Pharisees retorted.

  372. You can just hear

  373. the frustration

  374. leaking through.

  375. Blast you

  376. good for nothing

  377. temple guards.

  378. You're useless.

  379. So you've been brainwashed

  380. by this guy's teaching too,

  381. haven't you?

  382. It's almost like

  383. they're trying to shame them.

  384. They go on.

  385. Have any of the rulers

  386. of the Pharisees

  387. believed in Him?

  388. No.

  389. But this mob

  390. that knows nothing

  391. of the law,

  392. there's a curse

  393. on them.

  394. You can just feel

  395. the animosity,

  396. the frustration

  397. oozing out of them.

  398. You can hear

  399. the pride swelling.

  400. We're the rulers.

  401. We're the Pharisees.

  402. We're the religious leaders,

  403. the experts

  404. in the law.

  405. None of us

  406. has believed in Him.

  407. You're just like

  408. all those idiots

  409. in the crowd

  410. who are completely

  411. ignorant of the law.

  412. they're accursed.

  413. But perhaps

  414. unbeknownst to them,

  415. there is one ruler

  416. who might be getting close

  417. or perhaps already

  418. believe in Jesus.

  419. And at just the right moment

  420. he steps forward

  421. just to show

  422. actually there might be

  423. somebody here

  424. among us

  425. who does

  426. believe Him.

  427. verse 50.

  428. Nicodemus,

  429. who had gone

  430. to Jesus earlier

  431. and who was one

  432. of their own number,

  433. asked,

  434. does our law

  435. condemn a man

  436. without first hearing him

  437. to find out

  438. what he has been doing?

  439. Very wise reply.

  440. Not only does he

  441. let the guards know

  442. that, yeah,

  443. there actually might be

  444. someone from

  445. among the leaders

  446. who is not sure

  447. that Jesus

  448. is the bad guy,

  449. but he also

  450. calls the Pharisees

  451. out on their

  452. scheming here.

  453. I mean,

  454. you guys are thinking

  455. here and acting

  456. and treating him

  457. as if he's already

  458. been condemned,

  459. as if the trial's

  460. already been

  461. taking place,

  462. the verdict

  463. is already decided.

  464. When are we going

  465. to have a proper

  466. trial here?

  467. And it's here

  468. that the Pharisees

  469. show their true colors

  470. because

  471. the crowd's not here,

  472. this is just

  473. an internal

  474. meeting here,

  475. the leaders

  476. and the guards,

  477. if they only

  478. intended to bring

  479. Jesus in

  480. for a fair trial,

  481. this was their

  482. opportunity to say so.

  483. They could have

  484. just said,

  485. Nicodemus,

  486. that's the very

  487. reason we sent

  488. the guards

  489. to arrest him.

  490. We wanted to

  491. bring him in

  492. so that we could

  493. have a proper

  494. hearing and get

  495. to the bottom

  496. of this.

  497. But that's not

  498. how they respond

  499. or what they stay.

  500. Instead,

  501. they bark back

  502. at Nicodemus

  503. and shut him

  504. down.

  505. Verse 52,

  506. Are you from

  507. Galilee too?

  508. Look into it

  509. and you will find

  510. that a prophet

  511. does not come

  512. out of Galilee.

  513. We've got a little

  514. bit of regional

  515. tension going on

  516. here.

  517. Like,

  518. what?

  519. Are you a

  520. Galilean too?

  521. Another one of

  522. those inferior

  523. Galileans,

  524. second-class

  525. northerners,

  526. do your homework,

  527. bub.

  528. Get your

  529. scriptures out

  530. and read them.

  531. You'll see

  532. there's no prophet

  533. coming out of

  534. Galilee,

  535. spoken of there.

  536. Just shut down.

  537. It happens today.

  538. We hear about it

  539. in the news

  540. and it happened

  541. back then too.

  542. Nicodemus was

  543. just stereotyped,

  544. insulted,

  545. and cancelled.

  546. Why?

  547. Why?

  548. I think because

  549. his comment

  550. hit a little

  551. too close to

  552. home.

  553. He knew that

  554. what they were

  555. planning was

  556. not a proper

  557. hearing or

  558. trial for

  559. Jesus.

  560. In their

  561. minds,

  562. Jesus was

  563. already on

  564. death row.

  565. So the plot

  566. thickens.

  567. Just like in

  568. the days long

  569. before,

  570. the corrupt

  571. and wicked

  572. rulers sent

  573. in the

  574. enforcers to

  575. go after

  576. God's man.

  577. And again,

  578. just like in

  579. the days

  580. before,

  581. God delivers

  582. his anointed,

  583. his chosen

  584. one,

  585. by turning

  586. the very

  587. hearts of

  588. the men

  589. sent to

  590. arrest him.

  591. As hard

  592. as the

  593. religious leaders

  594. try,

  595. they so far

  596. are unsuccessful

  597. in keeping

  598. Jesus from

  599. speaking the

  600. words which

  601. God has

  602. sent him

  603. to speak.

  604. And the

  605. message of

  606. God is

  607. ringing out.

  608. And while

  609. there's

  610. opposition to

  611. it,

  612. and some

  613. do not

  614. believe it,

  615. some are

  616. angry and

  617. want Jesus

  618. arrested,

  619. some are

  620. truly hearing

  621. and they

  622. are coming

  623. to believe

  624. that Jesus

  625. truly is

  626. who he

  627. says he

  628. is.

  629. Well,

  630. what's here

  631. in all of

  632. this for

  633. us this

  634. morning?

  635. I want to

  636. point us

  637. back to

  638. these words

  639. moments as

  640. Jesus stood

  641. and cried

  642. out.

  643. I want

  644. you to

  645. imagine

  646. yourself

  647. there in

  648. the crowd

  649. that moment

  650. as he

  651. stood up

  652. and cried

  653. out,

  654. let anyone

  655. who is

  656. thirsty

  657. come to

  658. me and

  659. drink.

  660. Whoever

  661. believes in

  662. me, as

  663. scripture has

  664. said,

  665. rivers of

  666. living water

  667. will flow

  668. from within

  669. them.

  670. what kind

  671. of response

  672. is Jesus

  673. looking for

  674. from them

  675. in this

  676. moment?

  677. It's the

  678. same response

  679. that he's

  680. looking for

  681. from you

  682. and me.

  683. Are you

  684. thirsty?

  685. Does your

  686. soul thirst?

  687. The truth

  688. is that we

  689. all thirst.

  690. We all

  691. have deep

  692. longings in

  693. our souls.

  694. we were

  695. made to

  696. thirst and

  697. be quenched,

  698. both in

  699. the outward

  700. physical way

  701. and also

  702. in the

  703. inward way.

  704. And so

  705. in some

  706. ways the

  707. question is

  708. not so

  709. much do

  710. you thirst,

  711. but how

  712. do you

  713. quench

  714. your thirst?

  715. What do

  716. you thirst

  717. for?

  718. Long

  719. ago through

  720. the prophet

  721. Jeremiah,

  722. God said

  723. this,

  724. he said,

  725. this is

  726. Jeremiah

  727. 2.13,

  728. my people

  729. have committed

  730. two sins,

  731. they have

  732. forsaken

  733. me,

  734. the spring

  735. of living

  736. water,

  737. and have

  738. dug their

  739. own

  740. cisterns,

  741. broken

  742. cisterns

  743. that cannot

  744. hold

  745. water.

  746. This is

  747. what the

  748. wilderness

  749. wanderings

  750. were meant

  751. to teach

  752. them long

  753. ago.

  754. God led

  755. them on

  756. purpose

  757. into places

  758. where there

  759. was no

  760. water,

  761. so that

  762. they would

  763. come to

  764. see that

  765. he is

  766. the one

  767. who can

  768. quench

  769. our thirst,

  770. and not

  771. just our

  772. bodily

  773. thirst,

  774. but the

  775. thirst of

  776. our souls,

  777. the deeper

  778. thirst,

  779. that deep

  780. longing and

  781. need that

  782. we have

  783. for life

  784. in here.

  785. water.

  786. God

  787. himself is

  788. the spring

  789. of living

  790. water,

  791. but we

  792. have this

  793. bent

  794. called sin

  795. where we

  796. tend to

  797. turn away

  798. from him

  799. and seek

  800. our own

  801. alternative

  802. sources

  803. which cannot

  804. even compare

  805. to him.

  806. which would

  807. you rather

  808. drink?

  809. The fresh

  810. clear flow

  811. of a

  812. spring

  813. near the

  814. base of

  815. a mountain

  816. or that

  817. water that's

  818. been sitting

  819. there in a

  820. cistern in

  821. the ground,

  822. that broken

  823. cistern that's

  824. cracked where

  825. the water

  826. leaks out and

  827. the dirt

  828. seeps in?

  829. What do

  830. you thirst

  831. for?

  832. What have

  833. you been

  834. trying to

  835. quench the

  836. thirst of

  837. your soul

  838. with?

  839. the

  840. pleasures of

  841. this world?

  842. Stuff?

  843. Money?

  844. Netflix?

  845. Facebook?

  846. Food?

  847. We were

  848. made to

  849. thirst for

  850. God himself

  851. just as our

  852. bodies were

  853. made to

  854. thirst for

  855. water.

  856. We were

  857. made to

  858. cry out

  859. like David

  860. did in

  861. the desert

  862. O God,

  863. you are

  864. my God.

  865. Earnestly I

  866. seek you.

  867. I thirst

  868. for you.

  869. My whole

  870. being longs

  871. for you

  872. in a dry

  873. and parched

  874. land where

  875. there is no

  876. water.

  877. The good

  878. news of

  879. Jesus is

  880. not just

  881. something for

  882. our heads

  883. to believe

  884. in.

  885. It's not

  886. just a

  887. ticket to

  888. hold on

  889. to for

  890. a later

  891. time.

  892. The good

  893. news of

  894. Jesus is

  895. this.

  896. God wants

  897. to quench

  898. the thirst

  899. of your

  900. soul.

  901. He wants

  902. to provide

  903. you with

  904. that drink

  905. that will

  906. truly satisfy

  907. and refresh

  908. you and

  909. give life

  910. to you.

  911. And not

  912. just a

  913. drop or

  914. two or

  915. a little

  916. cup that

  917. will leave

  918. you longing

  919. for more.

  920. No,

  921. he wants

  922. to put

  923. the fountain

  924. of all

  925. life itself

  926. inside you.

  927. He wants

  928. to put his

  929. own spirit,

  930. the source

  931. of life,

  932. in you

  933. and cause

  934. his rivers

  935. of living

  936. water to

  937. flow

  938. forth

  939. from inside

  940. you.

  941. Are you

  942. thirsty for

  943. that?

  944. Do you

  945. want that?

  946. Then leave

  947. your broken

  948. cisterns

  949. behind

  950. and come

  951. to Jesus

  952. and drink

  953. what he is

  954. holding out

  955. to you.

  956. Believe in

  957. him.

  958. Listen to

  959. his words.

  960. Take them

  961. into your

  962. heart.

  963. Follow

  964. him.

  965. Surrender

  966. to him.

  967. And this

  968. extravagant

  969. gift of

  970. life is

  971. yours.

  972. This is

  973. the good

  974. news of

  975. Jesus.

  976. I pray

  977. that we'll

  978. believe it.

  979. Father in

  980. heaven,

  981. we thank

  982. you

  983. that you

  984. sent Jesus

  985. into our

  986. world

  987. to quench

  988. our thirsts,

  989. to give

  990. us the

  991. ultimate

  992. gift,

  993. the

  994. ultimate

  995. drink.

  996. I pray

  997. that our

  998. hearts would

  999. embrace

  1000. that.

  1001. Lord, I

  1002. know in

  1003. my own

  1004. heart this

  1005. week, I've

  1006. found myself

  1007. distracted and

  1008. looking at

  1009. all kinds of

  1010. different things

  1011. going on around

  1012. me, longing,

  1013. looking for

  1014. relief and

  1015. refreshment in

  1016. these trying

  1017. times, but

  1018. it's you.

  1019. You're the

  1020. one that we

  1021. need.

  1022. You're the

  1023. one who

  1024. quenches our

  1025. thirst so

  1026. that we

  1027. never thirst

  1028. again.

  1029. Help us to

  1030. see that.

  1031. Help us to

  1032. cling to that

  1033. truth in

  1034. these days

  1035. ahead and

  1036. to share it

  1037. with others.

  1038. In Jesus'

  1039. name, amen.
