  1. If you have your Bible with you, please open it up to the book of Hebrews.

  2. This past week I was reading in the book of Hebrews, and I love the book of Hebrews.

  3. I love Hebrews because God gives me such deep assurance of my salvation as I read in Hebrews.

  4. But yet, I also love it because somehow at the same time, He also gives me such powerful and penetrating warnings

  5. that my soul needs to turn away from sin and to keep following Christ faithfully.

  6. Well, this week as I was reading in Hebrews, I came to chapter 10.

  7. In chapter 10, as the author comes to it, he's talking about the sacrifice that Jesus offered for us

  8. and how much better Christ and His sacrifice is than the Levitical high priests

  9. and the animal sacrifices offered long ago according to the law.

  10. So, let's read some of these words together.

  11. I'm going to read Hebrews 10, from verse 1 down to 18.

  12. So, a little bit longer section.

  13. And let's reflect together on these words this morning as we prepare to take the Lord's table.

  14. The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming, not the realities themselves.

  15. For this reason, it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year,

  16. make perfect those who draw near to worship.

  17. Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered?

  18. For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins.

  19. But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins.

  20. It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.

  21. Therefore, when Christ came into the world, He said,

  22. Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me.

  23. With burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased.

  24. Then I said,

  25. Here I am.

  26. It is written about me in the scroll.

  27. I have come to do your will, my God.

  28. First, He said,

  29. Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire,

  30. nor were you pleased with them,

  31. though they were offered in accordance with the law.

  32. Then He said,

  33. Here I am.

  34. I have come to do your will.

  35. He sets aside the first to establish the second.

  36. And by that will,

  37. we have been made holy

  38. through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

  39. Day after day,

  40. every priest stands and performs his religious duties.

  41. Again and again,

  42. He offers the same sacrifices,

  43. which can never take away sins.

  44. But when this priest

  45. had offered for all time

  46. one sacrifice for sins,

  47. he sat down at the right hand of God.

  48. And since that time,

  49. he waits for his enemies

  50. to be made his footstool.

  51. For by one sacrifice,

  52. he has made perfect forever

  53. those who are being made holy.

  54. The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this.

  55. First, He says,

  56. This is the covenant I will make with them after that time,

  57. says the Lord.

  58. I will put my laws in their hearts,

  59. and I will write them on their minds.

  60. Then, He adds,

  61. Their sins and lawless acts

  62. I will remember no more.

  63. And where these have been forgiven,

  64. sacrifice for sin

  65. is no longer necessary.

  66. There's so much in these words,

  67. we could spend days unpacking it all.

  68. But for this morning,

  69. as we come to the Lord's table,

  70. I want to just focus in on two things.

  71. The first is a question.

  72. It's,

  73. What is the will of God

  74. that Jesus came to do?

  75. You see there in verse 7,

  76. Christ came into the world,

  77. and He said,

  78. I have come to do your will,

  79. my God.

  80. What is that will?

  81. What is God's will

  82. that Christ came to do?

  83. And the second thing is,

  84. What does Jesus doing that

  85. mean for us?

  86. I was deeply moved

  87. as I reflected on these

  88. two questions this week.

  89. Let's just start by

  90. having an overview,

  91. a little summary look

  92. at what the author of Hebrews

  93. is saying

  94. here in these verses

  95. which lead up to that.

  96. In verses 1 to 4,

  97. the author of Hebrews

  98. makes this wonderful statement

  99. that the law is only a shadow

  100. of the good things

  101. that are coming.

  102. He talks about

  103. what the Old Testament law

  104. required.

  105. He talks about the priests

  106. and how they were required

  107. to offer sacrifices

  108. for the cleansing

  109. of the people

  110. who ever wanted to

  111. come near to worship God.

  112. He says that those sacrifices,

  113. they had to be offered

  114. again and again,

  115. year after year.

  116. Why?

  117. Because those animal sacrifices

  118. were not able to make

  119. the people perfect.

  120. They were only able,

  121. as we read in chapter 9,

  122. to outwardly cleanse

  123. the people,

  124. to make them ceremonially

  125. clean

  126. of the past sins

  127. that they had committed.

  128. Now God did say

  129. back in the law

  130. that when they brought

  131. an animal of their flock

  132. and offered it as a sacrifice

  133. that they would be forgiven.

  134. But there still remained

  135. a sense in which

  136. those sacrifices,

  137. those animal sacrifices,

  138. were like a temporary

  139. covering of sin.

  140. Because as the author

  141. of Hebrews says

  142. in verse 4,

  143. it is impossible

  144. for the blood of bulls

  145. and goats

  146. to take away sins.

  147. And I think

  148. deep down inside

  149. we all know that,

  150. don't we?

  151. It was costly

  152. for a man or woman

  153. to take

  154. one of their

  155. own animals

  156. out of the flock,

  157. a perfectly good animal,

  158. and bring it to the temple

  159. where it would be slaughtered

  160. as a sacrifice.

  161. It was costly.

  162. But deep down inside

  163. we all know that

  164. true justice

  165. requires more than that,

  166. don't we?

  167. We know that

  168. the appropriate cost

  169. for our sins

  170. is much more than

  171. just the life

  172. of an animal.

  173. the cost

  174. for us,

  175. for our sins,

  176. is death.

  177. That's what the Lord said

  178. clearly

  179. to Adam

  180. in the Garden of Eden.

  181. In the day that you eat

  182. of the fruit of that tree

  183. you will surely die.

  184. The consequence

  185. for defying

  186. the Lord of glory

  187. is death.

  188. death.

  189. Yet still

  190. we often wonder,

  191. don't we,

  192. why God prescribed

  193. animal sacrifice,

  194. such a bloody

  195. and gruesome thing

  196. to make atonement

  197. for the sins

  198. of the people.

  199. But the reason

  200. we wonder,

  201. I think,

  202. is because we don't

  203. properly feel

  204. the ugliness,

  205. the seriousness

  206. of our sin.

  207. we think

  208. it a small thing

  209. to do what is wicked,

  210. to do what is

  211. sinful,

  212. to do what is

  213. selfish.

  214. We think

  215. it a small thing

  216. to defy

  217. the living God,

  218. the righteous one,

  219. but it's not.

  220. The bloody

  221. and gruesome

  222. animal sacrifices

  223. were meant

  224. to help us see

  225. just how bad

  226. our sins

  227. really are.

  228. in the sight

  229. of him

  230. who is good

  231. and righteous

  232. and just.

  233. They were a shadow

  234. pointing to a greater

  235. reality.

  236. And even though

  237. God prescribed

  238. these animal

  239. sacrifices

  240. to be brought

  241. for a time,

  242. deep down

  243. inside God's

  244. heart,

  245. he did not

  246. desire

  247. these animal

  248. sacrifices.

  249. Verse 5,

  250. when Christ

  251. came into the

  252. world,

  253. he said,

  254. sacrifice

  255. and offering

  256. you did

  257. not desire.

  258. And then again

  259. in verse 6,

  260. with burnt

  261. offering

  262. and sin

  263. offerings,

  264. you were not

  265. pleased.

  266. There's a difference

  267. between requiring

  268. something to be

  269. done

  270. and desiring

  271. something

  272. to be done.

  273. this is not

  274. a perfect

  275. analogy,

  276. but it's

  277. like this

  278. with our

  279. children.

  280. When our

  281. children

  282. disobey,

  283. we give

  284. them consequences.

  285. We discipline

  286. them,

  287. not because

  288. we want

  289. to,

  290. but because

  291. we have

  292. to.

  293. For all

  294. you kids

  295. listening,

  296. if your mom

  297. or your dad

  298. are disciplining

  299. you in the

  300. way that God

  301. has said

  302. we should,

  303. then they

  304. discipline you

  305. because they

  306. love you.

  307. Because they

  308. want you to

  309. learn to do

  310. what is right.

  311. They want

  312. to teach you

  313. that there are

  314. consequences to

  315. disobeying those

  316. in authority

  317. over you.

  318. But as a

  319. parent myself,

  320. I can tell you

  321. that disciplining

  322. my children is

  323. something I'm

  324. required to do

  325. for the good

  326. of my children.

  327. It's not

  328. something I

  329. desire to do.

  330. In fact,

  331. even when I

  332. do,

  333. I feel in my

  334. own heart

  335. the sting

  336. of the

  337. consequence

  338. that they

  339. receive.

  340. It's like

  341. that with

  342. God.

  343. He is

  344. good.

  345. He is

  346. just.

  347. And so,

  348. yes,

  349. sacrifices

  350. are required.

  351. But God

  352. doesn't take

  353. pleasure in

  354. the slaughter

  355. of animals.

  356. He doesn't

  357. take pleasure

  358. in the sting

  359. of the cost

  360. that's felt

  361. by the person

  362. who had to

  363. select that

  364. animal and

  365. bring it

  366. from his

  367. own flock.

  368. God is

  369. not,

  370. as Richard

  371. Dawkins

  372. once said,

  373. vindictive

  374. or bloodthirsty.

  375. In fact,

  376. God cared

  377. for each

  378. of those

  379. animals even

  380. more than

  381. their owners

  382. did,

  383. even more

  384. than you

  385. or I

  386. might think

  387. that we

  388. care for

  389. them.

  390. It was

  391. God who

  392. said,

  393. do not

  394. muzzle

  395. the ox

  396. while it

  397. is treading

  398. out the

  399. grain.

  400. Let him

  401. eat while

  402. he is

  403. going

  404. along.

  405. It's

  406. God who

  407. in Proverbs

  408. 12.10

  409. said,

  410. the righteous

  411. care for

  412. the needs

  413. of their

  414. animals.

  415. If the

  416. animal sacrifice

  417. is revolting

  418. to us,

  419. how much

  420. more is

  421. it revolting

  422. to the

  423. one who

  424. himself

  425. made that

  426. creature

  427. and called

  428. it good

  429. and cares

  430. for it?

  431. So even

  432. though God

  433. required animal

  434. sacrifices

  435. for sins,

  436. he did

  437. not desire

  438. them.

  439. He took

  440. no pleasure

  441. in them.

  442. But I

  443. think as we

  444. read here,

  445. the biggest

  446. reason why

  447. he did

  448. not desire

  449. them,

  450. it's right

  451. here in

  452. the text,

  453. he did

  454. not desire

  455. them,

  456. because these

  457. sacrifices

  458. did not

  459. and could

  460. not accomplish

  461. what God

  462. most deeply

  463. desires for

  464. his people.

  465. And nobody

  466. knew this

  467. better than

  468. Jesus,

  469. God's own

  470. son.

  471. Verse 5,

  472. therefore,

  473. when Christ

  474. came into

  475. the world,

  476. he said,

  477. sacrifice

  478. and offering

  479. you did

  480. not desire,

  481. but a

  482. body you

  483. prepared for

  484. me.

  485. With burnt

  486. offerings and

  487. sin offerings

  488. you were not

  489. pleased.

  490. Then I

  491. said,

  492. here I

  493. am.

  494. It is

  495. written about

  496. me in

  497. the scroll.

  498. I have

  499. come to do

  500. your will,

  501. my God.

  502. God.

  503. I love

  504. these verses.

  505. It's as

  506. though the

  507. author of

  508. Hebrews is

  509. peeling back

  510. the skin

  511. and opening

  512. up so that

  513. we can see

  514. the very

  515. heart of

  516. Christ as

  517. he speaks

  518. to his

  519. father.

  520. As Jesus

  521. speaks these

  522. words to

  523. his father,

  524. it's as

  525. though Jesus

  526. is saying,

  527. I know,

  528. Father,

  529. that you

  530. do not

  531. desire these

  532. animal

  533. sacrifices.

  534. I know

  535. that they

  536. don't

  537. please you.

  538. And so

  539. here I

  540. am.

  541. I am

  542. here to

  543. do what

  544. you really

  545. truly desire

  546. and long

  547. for your

  548. people.

  549. I am

  550. here to

  551. do your

  552. will.

  553. And so

  554. we come to

  555. that question.

  556. What is

  557. Jesus come

  558. to do that

  559. God wills,

  560. that God

  561. wants?

  562. What is

  563. the will

  564. of God?

  565. what is

  566. it that

  567. God most

  568. deeply

  569. desires for

  570. his people,

  571. that Jesus

  572. came to

  573. do?

  574. The answer

  575. is this.

  576. What God

  577. wants,

  578. what God

  579. wills and

  580. desires,

  581. is what those

  582. animal sacrifices

  583. could never

  584. do for

  585. his people.

  586. He desires

  587. for his

  588. people to

  589. be cleansed

  590. clean of

  591. their sin,

  592. not just

  593. outwardly,

  594. but inwardly.

  595. he desires

  596. for his

  597. people to

  598. be covered,

  599. to be

  600. atoned for,

  601. not just

  602. temporarily,

  603. but permanently,

  604. lastingly,

  605. once and

  606. for all.

  607. He desires

  608. for their

  609. guilt to

  610. be truly

  611. and fully

  612. taken away,

  613. as the

  614. animal sacrifices

  615. could not

  616. do.

  617. He desires

  618. and wills

  619. for his

  620. worshipers,

  621. as we read

  622. in verse

  623. one,

  624. to be made

  625. perfect.

  626. And as we

  627. read in

  628. verse 10,

  629. to be

  630. made

  631. holy.

  632. That's the

  633. will of

  634. God.

  635. That's the

  636. will of

  637. the Father.

  638. Sometimes we

  639. come to that

  640. place,

  641. though,

  642. I think,

  643. where we

  644. think,

  645. or where

  646. we're tempted

  647. to think,

  648. that God

  649. the Father

  650. is not

  651. for us.

  652. That he

  653. doesn't

  654. really love

  655. us.

  656. that he's

  657. mostly angry

  658. with us

  659. because of

  660. our sins.

  661. We might

  662. think that in

  663. his heart of

  664. hearts,

  665. he's really

  666. just waiting

  667. for us to

  668. finally cross

  669. that line

  670. again so

  671. that he

  672. can pour

  673. out his

  674. judgment on

  675. us and

  676. strike us

  677. down.

  678. And maybe

  679. we love

  680. Jesus much

  681. more because

  682. we see him

  683. as the one

  684. who has

  685. come to

  686. stand in

  687. the gap

  688. between

  689. us and

  690. this angry

  691. God.

  692. We might

  693. think that

  694. Jesus loves

  695. me.

  696. This I

  697. know.

  698. But the

  699. Father,

  700. deep down

  701. inside,

  702. wants to

  703. see me

  704. suffer for

  705. my sins.

  706. But nothing

  707. could be

  708. further from

  709. the truth.

  710. What did

  711. Jesus say

  712. when he came

  713. into the

  714. world?

  715. It's right

  716. there in

  717. verse 9.

  718. Here I

  719. am,

  720. he says to

  721. his Father.

  722. I have

  723. come to

  724. do your

  725. will.

  726. I've

  727. come to

  728. do what

  729. you want,

  730. what you

  731. desire.

  732. And what

  733. is that

  734. will,

  735. that heart,

  736. that desire

  737. of the

  738. Father?

  739. It's for

  740. you to

  741. be and

  742. have what

  743. the sacrifices

  744. of animals

  745. could not

  746. do for

  747. you.

  748. It's for

  749. you to

  750. be cleansed

  751. inside,

  752. clean,

  753. and out

  754. as well

  755. for your

  756. guilt to

  757. be taken

  758. away once

  759. and for

  760. all,

  761. for your

  762. legal

  763. indebtedness

  764. to God

  765. to be

  766. taken care

  767. of.

  768. What the

  769. law requires,

  770. paid in

  771. full,

  772. forever.

  773. He desires

  774. for you

  775. to be made

  776. perfect,

  777. to be

  778. holy,

  779. to be made

  780. holy,

  781. and that

  782. forever.

  783. Verse 10,

  784. and by

  785. that will,

  786. he says,

  787. we have

  788. been made

  789. holy.

  790. How?

  791. Through the

  792. sacrifice

  793. of the

  794. body of

  795. Jesus Christ.

  796. Once and

  797. for all.

  798. Animal

  799. sacrifices

  800. couldn't do

  801. what God

  802. in His

  803. heart of

  804. hearts

  805. wanted to

  806. do for

  807. you.

  808. A much,

  809. much

  810. costlier

  811. sacrifice

  812. was required.

  813. The

  814. sacrifice

  815. of the

  816. body of

  817. Jesus

  818. Christ,

  819. once and

  820. for all.

  821. this is

  822. what happened

  823. at the

  824. cross

  825. 2,000

  826. years ago.

  827. Jesus,

  828. the perfect

  829. Son of

  830. God,

  831. He came

  832. as the

  833. ultimate

  834. High Priest

  835. and He

  836. offered on

  837. our behalf

  838. Himself

  839. as the

  840. ultimate

  841. sacrifice,

  842. the one

  843. sacrifice

  844. which could

  845. accomplish

  846. the will

  847. of God

  848. and put

  849. an end

  850. to all

  851. sacrifice

  852. forever.

  853. And all

  854. of this,

  855. the author

  856. of Hebrews

  857. tells us

  858. is part

  859. of a

  860. new

  861. covenant,

  862. a new

  863. arrangement

  864. that God

  865. was coming

  866. to with

  867. His people.

  868. As the

  869. author of

  870. Hebrews said

  871. earlier on,

  872. the old

  873. sacrifices,

  874. they had to

  875. be made

  876. again and

  877. again,

  878. endlessly.

  879. The people

  880. kept sinning

  881. and so they

  882. had to come

  883. and bring

  884. another

  885. sacrifice

  886. and offer

  887. it to

  888. cover their

  889. sins.

  890. But this

  891. new covenant

  892. deal with

  893. Christ,

  894. is infinitely

  895. better.

  896. This new

  897. covenant

  898. deal secured

  899. by the

  900. blood of

  901. Jesus leads

  902. us to

  903. verse 17.

  904. It leads

  905. us to

  906. God the

  907. Father saying

  908. their sins

  909. and lawless

  910. acts I

  911. will remember

  912. no more.

  913. Gone.

  914. Forever.

  915. Verse 18,

  916. and where

  917. these have

  918. been forgiven,

  919. sacrifice

  920. for sin

  921. is no

  922. longer

  923. necessary.

  924. What Jesus

  925. did at the

  926. cross brought

  927. a forgiveness

  928. so full,

  929. so all

  930. encompassing,

  931. so deep,

  932. so true,

  933. that there

  934. will never

  935. ever be a

  936. need for

  937. another

  938. sacrifice to

  939. be offered.

  940. Lord,

  941. you know,

  942. what really

  943. got to my

  944. heart here

  945. is this.

  946. It's one

  947. thing in a

  948. moment to

  949. forgive someone

  950. for all the

  951. wrong that

  952. they've done

  953. to you in

  954. the past,

  955. but it's

  956. another thing

  957. in one

  958. moment to

  959. forgive them

  960. for all the

  961. wrong they

  962. will ever

  963. do in

  964. their entire

  965. life,

  966. even before

  967. they've done

  968. it.

  969. what does

  970. this mean

  971. for us?

  972. It means

  973. that when we

  974. sin against

  975. our God,

  976. every time

  977. we do it,

  978. we do not

  979. have need

  980. of another

  981. sacrifice

  982. to be offered

  983. because what

  984. Jesus suffered

  985. at the

  986. cross,

  987. he suffered

  988. for yesterday's

  989. sins,

  990. he suffered

  991. for today's

  992. sins,

  993. and he

  994. suffered,

  995. yes,

  996. even for

  997. the sins

  998. of tomorrow.

  999. There's no

  1000. perfect analogy

  1001. for this,

  1002. but let me

  1003. try a couple.

  1004. It's one

  1005. thing to pay

  1006. the bill

  1007. for someone

  1008. else for a

  1009. restaurant meal

  1010. that's already

  1011. been eaten,

  1012. but it's a

  1013. whole other

  1014. thing to pay

  1015. the bill for

  1016. someone else

  1017. at the

  1018. restaurant,

  1019. not just

  1020. for the

  1021. meal they

  1022. ate,

  1023. but for

  1024. every meal

  1025. they will

  1026. ever eat

  1027. at that

  1028. restaurant

  1029. ever again.

  1030. And it's

  1031. not a good

  1032. analogy,

  1033. because sinning

  1034. against God

  1035. is not like

  1036. a restaurant

  1037. meal.

  1038. It's wrong.

  1039. It's evil.

  1040. It's more

  1041. like crime.

  1042. It's one

  1043. thing to pay

  1044. the fine

  1045. of someone

  1046. else after

  1047. they've

  1048. committed a

  1049. crime.

  1050. It's another

  1051. thing to

  1052. pay enough

  1053. so that

  1054. every infraction,

  1055. every crime

  1056. they will ever

  1057. commit for

  1058. the rest

  1059. of their

  1060. life is

  1061. paid in

  1062. full,

  1063. and justice

  1064. is done.

  1065. it almost

  1066. sounds too

  1067. good to be

  1068. true,

  1069. doesn't it?

  1070. That God

  1071. would love

  1072. us with a

  1073. love like

  1074. that and

  1075. forgive us

  1076. with a

  1077. forgiveness

  1078. like that,

  1079. but it's

  1080. not,

  1081. because God

  1082. is not

  1083. like us.

  1084. If someone

  1085. sins against

  1086. us again

  1087. and again

  1088. and again,

  1089. eventually there

  1090. comes a time

  1091. where we are

  1092. ready to say

  1093. to them,

  1094. enough is

  1095. enough,

  1096. I will

  1097. not

  1098. forgive

  1099. you

  1100. again.

  1101. It hurts

  1102. too much,

  1103. or I just

  1104. don't care

  1105. about you

  1106. anymore after

  1107. all you've

  1108. done to

  1109. me.

  1110. But God

  1111. loved us

  1112. so deeply

  1113. that what

  1114. he wanted

  1115. to do

  1116. was to

  1117. give us

  1118. full and

  1119. free

  1120. forgiveness

  1121. for every

  1122. sin that

  1123. we would

  1124. ever commit,

  1125. past,

  1126. present,

  1127. and future

  1128. our entire

  1129. lives,

  1130. so that

  1131. nothing could

  1132. separate us

  1133. from him

  1134. ever again.

  1135. And so

  1136. Jesus came

  1137. to do,

  1138. to accomplish

  1139. that desire

  1140. of God,

  1141. that will

  1142. of God

  1143. for all

  1144. who repent

  1145. and believe

  1146. in him.

  1147. The suffering,

  1148. the agony,

  1149. the pain,

  1150. the shame

  1151. that we

  1152. deserve,

  1153. even for the

  1154. sins that we

  1155. will commit

  1156. tomorrow,

  1157. Jesus

  1158. took that

  1159. upon himself

  1160. at the

  1161. cross

  1162. 2,000 years

  1163. ago.

  1164. In God's

  1165. books,

  1166. what God

  1167. wanted,

  1168. it is

  1169. finished.

  1170. Let's take a

  1171. few minutes to

  1172. reflect on this

  1173. and to pray

  1174. quietly.

  1175. David's going

  1176. to put on

  1177. some music

  1178. break.

  1179. And Rod

  1180. is going

  1181. to,

  1182. after a

  1183. couple

  1184. minutes,

  1185. come around

  1186. with the

  1187. bread and

  1188. the cup.

  1189. These

  1190. things,

  1191. of course,

  1192. are a

  1193. reminder

  1194. of the

  1195. body of

  1196. Christ

  1197. and the

  1198. blood of

  1199. Christ,

  1200. which was

  1201. broken and

  1202. shed for

  1203. us.

  1204. If you

  1205. believe

  1206. that because

  1207. of what

  1208. Jesus did

  1209. on the

  1210. cross for

  1211. you,

  1212. there is

  1213. no need

  1214. for any

  1215. more

  1216. sacrifices,

  1217. then I

  1218. invite you

  1219. to partake

  1220. with us,

  1221. to eat

  1222. and drink

  1223. with us.

  1224. Just ask

  1225. that you

  1226. hold on

  1227. to the

  1228. bread and

  1229. the cup,

  1230. both,

  1231. until everybody

  1232. has been

  1233. served and

  1234. then we

  1235. will partake

  1236. together.
