  1. Alright, well, it's Resurrection Sunday.

  2. We've been celebrating what happened long ago that day in song.

  3. We heard the story read, and we want to take some time just to think about what this means for us this morning.

  4. So if you have your Bible, you can open it up to Matthew 28, verse 1.

    Matthew 28:1

  5. We're going to be looking at the story from Matthew's Gospel where we heard from earlier.

  6. Matthew 28, verse 1.

    Matthew 28:1

  7. And as we come to that wonderful Resurrection Sunday morning, we can't help but remember what's led up to this moment.

  8. And yet, where do we even start?

  9. This is all part of a greater story, the story of Jesus.

  10. And that's even part of an even bigger story, the story of our world, the story of God.

  11. But let's remember for a moment what happened just the week leading up to all this.

  12. Jesus has come into Jerusalem.

  13. Jesus, the great miracle worker.

  14. Jesus, the healer.

  15. Jesus, the one who has been teaching massive crowds and with such authority.

  16. He's come riding into Jerusalem just a week before all this to shouts of Hosanna.

  17. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

  18. Blessed is the King of Israel.

  19. It's been a week of excitement and anticipation.

  20. Just over three years before all this, almost nobody knew who this man was.

  21. And now here he comes riding into the capital city of Israel in the manner of a king.

  22. With a massive crowd of people all around him.

  23. And people have gathered from all over to mark the Passover celebration here in Jerusalem.

  24. And the spotlight, the attention of everyone is on this man, Jesus.

  25. Up until now, he's been a highly polarizing figure.

  26. And it seems that every time Jesus has come up to Jerusalem for another festival in the years leading up to this,

  27. all kinds of exciting things have been happening.

  28. There's been healings.

  29. He's done signs, miracles.

  30. There's been heated debate between this rabbi who hails from Galilee and the Jewish religious leaders.

  31. And for some time now, Jesus has come to be on the wanted list of the religious leaders.

  32. And many in Jerusalem know it.

  33. Many people believe that Jesus is the King, the Messiah, the Christ that God promised long ago.

  34. And if not that, they believe he's a prophet.

  35. Even some believe he's the ultimate prophet sent from God.

  36. But at the same time, many do not believe this about Jesus.

  37. Some think of him as a great trickster, a deceiver, or even a crazy person.

  38. And all week long, Jesus has been going to the temple courts and teaching the people.

  39. And the crowd there has been hanging on his every word.

  40. The religious leaders have been doing everything that they can to challenge him,

  41. to discredit him, to humiliate him, to trick him or trap him in his words.

  42. But nothing has worked.

  43. And then, eventually, finally, the evening of the Jewish Passover came.

  44. And Jesus came to celebrate the Passover with his disciples.

  45. That very night, under the cover of darkness,

  46. Judas led a group of men out to where Jesus was.

  47. And they arrested Jesus and his disciples scattered.

  48. Jesus was put through a couple sham trials.

  49. He was falsely accused.

  50. He was beaten.

  51. He was mocked.

  52. He was handed over to Pilate, the Roman governor, the next day.

  53. The religious leaders stirred up the people in Jerusalem to demand Jesus' execution,

  54. even though he was found innocent by Pilate.

  55. And Pilate wanted to calm the crowd.

  56. So he handed Jesus over to be crucified.

  57. Jesus was nailed to a cross and left to die.

  58. After Jesus had been executed, a man named Joseph, who was a member of the Jewish council,

  59. he went and got permission to take Jesus' body down from the cross and bury it.

  60. So he prepared the body and he buried Jesus in his own new tomb.

  61. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance.

  62. And then the chief priests and the Pharisees went and got permission from Pilate to secure the tomb.

  63. They put a seal on it and they posted a guard at the entrance.

  64. They wanted to ensure that Jesus' body remained undisturbed.

  65. They remembered what Jesus had said while he was teaching,

  66. that he would be killed and then be raised on the third day.

  67. And they didn't want to take any chances, so they put a few extra measures in place.

  68. Let's read what happened next from Matthew 28, verse 1.

    Matthew 28:1

  69. After the Sabbath, at dawn, on the first day of the week,

  70. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.

  71. These two women loved Jesus.

  72. They were some of the many close followers of Jesus.

  73. Why would they go back to his tomb?

  74. We don't know their exact thoughts,

  75. but we know that they loved Jesus deeply and that they believed in him.

  76. Everything that had just happened to Jesus was probably very fresh in their minds,

  77. playing over and over again like a horrific nightmare.

  78. The shouts of the crowd,

  79. Jesus' appearance after his beatings,

  80. the cries of pain as the nails were pounded in,

  81. the utter shame and humiliation of it all

  82. as he hung there, dying in agony on the cross,

  83. the taunts and the mocking of those who passed by and saw him,

  84. and even his words which he spoke in those last hours and moments before he died.

  85. Even though they had seen him buried,

  86. these women were probably still going through the full range of emotions.

  87. Grief,

  88. shock,

  89. anger,

  90. deep loss.

  91. They were mourning.

  92. Mark tells us that they had bought some spices so that they might go and anoint Jesus' body.

  93. Matthew here tells us simply that they went to see the tomb.

  94. And they went early in the morning,

  95. at dawn.

  96. verse 2.

  97. There was a violent earthquake,

  98. for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven.

  99. And going to the tomb,

  100. he rolled back the stone and sat on it.

  101. His appearance was like lightning,

  102. and his clothes were white as snow.

  103. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

  104. Can you imagine this moment for the women?

  105. Their hearts must have been pounding.

  106. Their eyes must have been wide as can be.

  107. Matthew says there was a violent earthquake,

  108. a great earthquake.

  109. Not just a little rumble in the ground,

  110. but a great earthquake.

  111. And the cause of this earthquake was the angel.

  112. For an angel of the Lord came down from heaven.

  113. Or because an angel of the Lord came down from heaven.

  114. This is where some of those superhero movies are so helpful to my imagination.

  115. You know those superheroes that fly,

  116. and sometimes they just make their entrance,

  117. they come shooting down from the sky,

  118. and the ground beneath their feet crumbles,

  119. and it sends a tremor out in all directions.

  120. I imagine it may be something like that.

  121. This meteorite streaking down from the heavens

  122. and impacting the earth.

  123. What an awesome thing it would have been to see.

  124. They felt the ground shake,

  125. and as they approach the tomb,

  126. they find that the stone has been rolled away,

  127. and they see this angel.

  128. They describe his appearance as like lightning,

  129. which probably means that he was nearly blinding in his appearance,

  130. so bright that their eyes could barely take him in.

  131. His clothes, white as snow,

  132. purest white that they'd ever seen.

  133. And the women weren't the only ones who saw the angel.

  134. The guards witnessed all this too.

  135. Matthew says in verse 4,

  136. The guards were so afraid of him

  137. that they shook or trembled

  138. and became like dead men.

  139. You can just imagine them

  140. terrified, in shock,

  141. their hands shaking,

  142. utterly paralyzed with fear,

  143. unable to move a muscle

  144. in the presence of this awesome angelic being.

  145. And then,

  146. verse 5,

  147. the angel speaks

  148. to these women.

  149. The angel said to the women,

  150. Do not be afraid,

  151. for I know that you are looking for Jesus

  152. who was crucified.

  153. The first thing he tells them is,

  154. Do not be afraid.

  155. Probably the women in that moment

  156. felt a lot like the guards felt in that moment.

  157. But the angel assures them,

  158. You guys are in no danger.

  159. And then the angel tells them

  160. that he knows why they have come.

  161. You're looking for Jesus.

  162. You're looking for the one who is crucified.

  163. You won't find him here,

  164. says the angel.

  165. He is not here.

  166. He is risen.

  167. We can only imagine

  168. the shock of the women

  169. as they try to process all of this.

  170. Like,

  171. What is,

  172. what's happening here?

  173. What are you saying?

  174. What do you mean he's not here?

  175. We saw him laid right there

  176. in the tomb.

  177. He is risen?

  178. What do you mean he's risen?

  179. Like,

  180. risen to heaven,

  181. or

  182. risen back to life

  183. and walking around?

  184. I don't know what they were thinking.

  185. But I know that if I had been there,

  186. I would have had all kinds of questions

  187. just swirling through my mind

  188. in that moment.

  189. My emotions would probably

  190. just be all over the place,

  191. looking for a place to land.

  192. How do I respond to all this?

  193. The angel says,

  194. Come,

  195. and see the place

  196. where he lay.

  197. Take a good look in here.

  198. You'll see.

  199. He's not here.

  200. And then,

  201. the angel gives them

  202. an assignment.

  203. Verse 7.

  204. Says,

  205. Go quickly

  206. and tell

  207. his disciples

  208. he has risen

  209. from the dead

  210. and is going ahead of you

  211. into Galilee.

  212. There you will see him.

  213. Now,

  214. I have told you.

  215. At this point,

  216. it becomes,

  217. it should be clear

  218. to the women

  219. what kind of risen

  220. the angel is talking about.

  221. The angel says it right there.

  222. Risen from the dead.

  223. Kind of risen.

  224. Like,

  225. you and the disciples

  226. are going to see him

  227. walking around

  228. bodily,

  229. over in Galilee.

  230. Kind of risen.

  231. This isn't just

  232. a spiritual resurrection.

  233. This is a human body

  234. back to life

  235. kind of resurrection.

  236. Go,

  237. tell his disciples

  238. that he's alive.

  239. Verse 8.

  240. So the women

  241. hurried away

  242. from the tomb,

  243. afraid,

  244. yet filled with joy,

  245. and ran

  246. to tell his disciples.

  247. This translation

  248. is probably

  249. a little bit flat.

  250. More literally.

  251. And departing

  252. quickly

  253. from the tomb

  254. with fear

  255. and great joy,

  256. they ran

  257. to report

  258. or announce

  259. to his disciples.

  260. Can you feel

  261. the intensity

  262. of this moment

  263. for these women?

  264. Matthew says

  265. they ran.

  266. And you have to know

  267. that this wasn't

  268. just your plain

  269. Jane Joggers

  270. run in the morning

  271. kind of run.

  272. No,

  273. they ran,

  274. it says,

  275. with fear

  276. and

  277. great joy.

  278. Probably the adrenaline

  279. was still coursing

  280. through their veins

  281. from everything

  282. that they just experienced

  283. and just,

  284. you know,

  285. giving them

  286. this explosive energy.

  287. But it wasn't

  288. all from fear.

  289. It was also

  290. from great joy.

  291. Our Lord

  292. is alive.

  293. I can scarcely

  294. imagine

  295. what it must have

  296. felt like.

  297. But can you

  298. imagine them

  299. running?

  300. There they are

  301. running

  302. excitedly

  303. and then

  304. verse 9.

  305. Suddenly,

  306. Jesus

  307. met them.

  308. Greetings,

  309. he said.

  310. This is a terrible

  311. English translation.

  312. In English,

  313. the word greetings

  314. is one of the most

  315. formal greetings.

  316. It's kind of a

  317. subdued way

  318. of saying hello.

  319. It's like

  320. the thing you would say

  321. when you step up

  322. to the podium

  323. to make a speech.

  324. in front of an audience.

  325. No,

  326. that's not right.

  327. The word he uses

  328. in even one of the

  329. latest translations

  330. of the Bible

  331. puts it in there

  332. right like this.

  333. The word he uses

  334. is actually,

  335. literally,

  336. rejoice.

  337. And that

  338. actually was

  339. a common greeting

  340. back then.

  341. Not unlike

  342. what we might mean

  343. when we say

  344. good morning to you,

  345. a joyful day to you,

  346. a happy day to you.

  347. Rejoice.

  348. But of course

  349. we know that

  350. in this moment,

  351. this reunion

  352. between Jesus

  353. and these Marys,

  354. Jesus probably

  355. means this greeting

  356. to the fullest

  357. possible extent.

  358. Rejoice.

  359. This is a very

  360. happy to see you

  361. moment.

  362. A reunion

  363. of reunions.

  364. Rejoice,

  365. he said.

  366. They came to him,

  367. clasped his feet,

  368. and worshipped him.

  369. I love this.

  370. They just

  371. grab a hold

  372. of his feet

  373. and they won't

  374. let go.

  375. And they worshipped

  376. him.

  377. Very strong word.

  378. They give him

  379. praise

  380. and glory.

  381. Verse 10.

  382. Then Jesus

  383. said to them,

  384. do not be afraid.

  385. Go and tell

  386. my brothers

  387. to go to Galilee.

  388. There

  389. they will see me.

  390. As I was

  391. reflecting on

  392. this week,

  393. something in this

  394. little phrase

  395. just touched me

  396. and it was the way

  397. Jesus referred

  398. to the other

  399. disciples.

  400. My brothers,

  401. go and tell

  402. my brothers.

  403. this is Jesus

  404. here,

  405. the resurrected

  406. king,

  407. the Messiah,

  408. the son of God,

  409. God in human

  410. flesh,

  411. and the women

  412. know their

  413. rightful place

  414. is at his feet

  415. worshipping.

  416. And yet,

  417. how does he

  418. refer to his

  419. disciples?

  420. My brothers.

  421. My brothers.

  422. I love that.

  423. If I were

  424. Peter

  425. or any of the

  426. other disciples

  427. who had deserted

  428. him that night,

  429. I'm thinking,

  430. I'm not worthy

  431. to be called

  432. your brother.

  433. I'm not worthy

  434. to be treated

  435. as a brother,

  436. as family.

  437. You're our king.

  438. You're the son

  439. of God.

  440. How can you

  441. call me a

  442. brother?

  443. Yet,

  444. that's what Jesus

  445. refers to them

  446. as,

  447. my brothers.

  448. And he doesn't

  449. overstate the

  450. truth of their

  451. relationship.

  452. What a joyful

  453. and happy day

  454. this was.

  455. Jesus.

  456. And this

  457. that we've

  458. just read

  459. is just

  460. the beginning

  461. of the story.

  462. Luke has

  463. more to say.

  464. John has

  465. more to say

  466. about all

  467. that Jesus

  468. did and

  469. said after

  470. he was raised

  471. from the dead

  472. up until the

  473. time that he

  474. was taken

  475. into heaven.

  476. This is the

  477. story of

  478. Resurrection

  479. Sunday.

  480. today.

  481. Now,

  482. what does

  483. it mean

  484. for us?

  485. Well,

  486. there's so

  487. much to

  488. say here

  489. and I

  490. don't think

  491. I'm overstating

  492. it to say

  493. that Jesus

  494. being raised

  495. from the

  496. dead means

  497. everything

  498. for us.

  499. Where do we

  500. even start?

  501. The Apostle

  502. Paul told the

  503. Corinthians that

  504. Jesus being

  505. raised from

  506. the dead is

  507. so crucial.

  508. It's so

  509. critical that

  510. if he hadn't

  511. been raised

  512. from the dead

  513. we'd all be

  514. lost.

  515. we'd be

  516. utterly hopeless.

  517. We'd still

  518. have our

  519. guilt and

  520. we'd be

  521. stuck in

  522. it forever.

  523. We'd be

  524. facing the

  525. final judgment

  526. of God

  527. for our

  528. sins with

  529. no hope,

  530. no pardon.

  531. That Christ

  532. was raised

  533. from the

  534. dead is

  535. God's

  536. declaration

  537. that the

  538. sacrifice

  539. Jesus

  540. offered was

  541. accepted.

  542. Mission

  543. accomplished.

  544. You and

  545. I,

  546. can be

  547. forgiven,

  548. were

  549. forgiven.

  550. Paul says

  551. it like

  552. this to

  553. the church

  554. at Rome.

  555. Jesus

  556. was delivered

  557. over to

  558. death for

  559. our sins.

  560. This is

  561. Romans 4.25

  562. and was

  563. raised to

  564. life for

  565. our

  566. justification.

  567. In other

  568. words,

  569. he was

  570. raised to

  571. life to

  572. secure our

  573. right standing

  574. with God

  575. in the

  576. courts of

  577. heaven.

  578. That's what

  579. his

  580. resurrection

  581. brings about

  582. for us.

  583. Jesus'

  584. resurrection

  585. means

  586. everything

  587. for us.

  588. It means

  589. that Jesus

  590. was not

  591. a false

  592. prophet.

  593. He predicted

  594. his death

  595. and his

  596. resurrection

  597. three days

  598. later,

  599. and exactly

  600. what he

  601. said

  602. came true.

  603. More than

  604. that,

  605. it means

  606. that everything

  607. Jesus said

  608. was true.

  609. Jesus

  610. claimed to

  611. be from

  612. heaven.

  613. He claimed

  614. to be sent

  615. from God.

  616. God.

  617. He claimed

  618. to speak

  619. to the

  620. people

  621. God's

  622. very

  623. words.

  624. And so

  625. the

  626. resurrection

  627. is the

  628. ultimate

  629. proof.

  630. It's

  631. God's

  632. stamp

  633. of

  634. approval

  635. that

  636. yes,

  637. he does

  638. speak for

  639. me.

  640. He is

  641. my

  642. son.

  643. He is

  644. the

  645. Christ.

  646. He is

  647. the king

  648. that I

  649. have

  650. chosen

  651. and

  652. appointed.

  653. He is

  654. the way

  655. and the

  656. truth

  657. and the

  658. life.

  659. So many

  660. of the

  661. promises

  662. of Jesus

  663. rest on

  664. the

  665. resurrection

  666. of Jesus.

  667. Think

  668. back to

  669. some of

  670. the things

  671. that Jesus

  672. said that

  673. we've been

  674. looking at

  675. in the

  676. gospel of

  677. John.

  678. John 5

  679. 24,

  680. very truly

  681. I tell

  682. you,

  683. whoever

  684. hears my

  685. word and

  686. believes

  687. him who

  688. sent me

  689. has

  690. eternal

  691. life and

  692. will not

  693. be judged

  694. but is

  695. crossed

  696. over from

  697. death to

  698. life.

  699. Can

  700. Jesus

  701. give us

  702. eternal

  703. life if

  704. he's still

  705. in the

  706. tomb?

  707. No.

  708. Jesus

  709. goes on

  710. in that

  711. particular

  712. conversation.

  713. He talks

  714. about how

  715. it's been

  716. given to

  717. him to

  718. judge all

  719. people at

  720. the final

  721. judgment.

  722. How can

  723. he do

  724. that if

  725. he's still

  726. in the

  727. tomb?

  728. He

  729. can't.

  730. he said

  731. to them

  732. that same

  733. day that

  734. there will

  735. come a

  736. day when

  737. he will

  738. call all

  739. people out

  740. of their

  741. graves to

  742. that moment

  743. of judgment.

  744. How can

  745. he do

  746. that if

  747. he's still

  748. in the

  749. tomb?

  750. None of

  751. this can

  752. be true

  753. if Jesus

  754. stayed

  755. dead.

  756. You

  757. might

  758. remember

  759. Jesus'

  760. conversation

  761. with

  762. Martha

  763. after

  764. Lazarus

  765. had

  766. died.

  767. He said

  768. to her,

  769. I am

  770. the

  771. resurrection

  772. and the

  773. life.

  774. The one

  775. who believes

  776. in me

  777. will live

  778. even though

  779. they die.

  780. These are

  781. totally empty

  782. words if

  783. Jesus himself

  784. was not

  785. even raised

  786. from the

  787. dead.

  788. I am

  789. the

  790. resurrection

  791. and the

  792. life.

  793. Paul

  794. doesn't

  795. overstate

  796. things when

  797. he says

  798. that if

  799. Jesus

  800. hadn't been

  801. raised from

  802. the dead,

  803. then our

  804. faith is

  805. futile.

  806. It's good

  807. for nothing.

  808. But Jesus

  809. was raised

  810. from the

  811. dead,

  812. just as

  813. we heard.

  814. And as

  815. Paul makes

  816. clear, if

  817. Jesus has

  818. been raised

  819. from the

  820. dead, then

  821. we know

  822. that the

  823. way has

  824. been opened

  825. for us

  826. to be

  827. raised from

  828. the dead

  829. too.

  830. For us

  831. to have

  832. the eternal

  833. life that

  834. Jesus promised

  835. to everyone

  836. who believes

  837. in his

  838. name.

  839. And this

  840. is wonderful.

  841. This is

  842. great news.

  843. It means

  844. that our

  845. greatest

  846. enemy,

  847. death,

  848. will not

  849. prevail over

  850. us at

  851. the end.

  852. Neither

  853. will the

  854. guilt that

  855. we have

  856. for our

  857. sins.

  858. Paul

  859. traces this

  860. out in

  861. his letter

  862. to the

  863. Corinthians.

  864. We won't

  865. go into

  866. all of

  867. that,

  868. but I

  869. love how

  870. he says

  871. it.

  872. He basically

  873. says,

  874. because of

  875. Christ's

  876. own victory

  877. over death,

  878. all of us

  879. who are in

  880. him can

  881. take up a

  882. taunt against

  883. death itself.

  884. Like,

  885. na-na-na-boo-boo,

  886. where,

  887. oh,

  888. death,

  889. is your

  890. victory?

  891. Where,

  892. oh,

  893. death,

  894. is your

  895. sting?

  896. It's gone.

  897. We have

  898. victory over

  899. death itself

  900. through Jesus

  901. Christ,

  902. our Lord.

  903. The list

  904. goes on.

  905. We could

  906. talk about

  907. how Jesus

  908. is in

  909. heaven,

  910. interceding

  911. for us

  912. right now.

  913. God,

  914. he wouldn't

  915. be if

  916. there was

  917. no

  918. resurrection.

  919. We could

  920. talk about

  921. how the

  922. promise was

  923. given that

  924. a son of

  925. David would

  926. come to

  927. sit on

  928. David's

  929. throne

  930. and rule

  931. forever.

  932. Could that

  933. be fulfilled

  934. without Jesus

  935. rising from

  936. the dead?

  937. No.

  938. The

  939. resurrection

  940. of Jesus

  941. is everything.

  942. It's the

  943. foundation of

  944. all that we

  945. hope for

  946. and long

  947. for and

  948. are waiting

  949. for as

  950. Christians.

  951. It's the

  952. foundation of

  953. everything God

  954. has promised

  955. to his

  956. people through

  957. all generations.

  958. But beyond

  959. all this,

  960. there is one

  961. thing that

  962. the resurrection

  963. of Jesus

  964. means for

  965. each one of

  966. us that's

  967. even more

  968. precious,

  969. at least to

  970. me,

  971. than all the

  972. rest.

  973. You know,

  974. I was watching

  975. a thing with

  976. my family

  977. last night.

  978. It's the

  979. story of

  980. Jesus done

  981. in some

  982. live theater.

  983. And I got

  984. thinking,

  985. you know,

  986. the disciples

  987. had it really

  988. good.

  989. They got to

  990. walk with

  991. Jesus while

  992. he was here.

  993. They got to

  994. see his face.

  995. They got to

  996. see the

  997. miracles that

  998. he did with

  999. their own

  1000. eyes.

  1001. They were

  1002. able to

  1003. touch him

  1004. and feel

  1005. him.

  1006. And he

  1007. was able to

  1008. touch them.

  1009. They had a

  1010. very tangible

  1011. relationship and

  1012. friendship with

  1013. Jesus that

  1014. was unique and

  1015. personal to

  1016. each one of

  1017. them.

  1018. the

  1019. resurrection of

  1020. Jesus means

  1021. that each

  1022. of their own

  1023. personal

  1024. relationships with

  1025. Jesus didn't

  1026. end the day

  1027. that Jesus

  1028. died.

  1029. Think about

  1030. that for a

  1031. moment.

  1032. What John

  1033. had with

  1034. Jesus,

  1035. the Apostle

  1036. John,

  1037. didn't end

  1038. when Jesus

  1039. died.

  1040. It continued

  1041. after Jesus

  1042. was raised.

  1043. That special

  1044. bond that

  1045. Peter had

  1046. with Jesus

  1047. continued

  1048. after Jesus

  1049. was raised.

  1050. that friendship

  1051. that Mary

  1052. Magdalene had

  1053. with Jesus

  1054. before he

  1055. died.

  1056. It didn't

  1057. end the day

  1058. of his

  1059. death.

  1060. That friendship

  1061. continued after

  1062. he was raised.

  1063. Now for all

  1064. of them and

  1065. for us,

  1066. having a

  1067. relationship

  1068. with Jesus

  1069. has changed.

  1070. When he

  1071. went back to

  1072. heaven,

  1073. in some

  1074. respects,

  1075. it became

  1076. almost like

  1077. a distance

  1078. relationship,

  1079. a relationship

  1080. that now

  1081. happens through

  1082. his spirit

  1083. that comes

  1084. to live

  1085. in us

  1086. when we

  1087. believe.

  1088. But there

  1089. is coming

  1090. a day

  1091. when Jesus

  1092. will return.

  1093. A day

  1094. when that

  1095. tangible,

  1096. physical,

  1097. visible

  1098. relationship

  1099. with Christ

  1100. will be

  1101. restored for

  1102. Peter

  1103. and John

  1104. and Mary

  1105. Magdalene

  1106. and for us

  1107. who believe

  1108. in him.

  1109. For all

  1110. of us who

  1111. have never

  1112. seen him

  1113. face to

  1114. face,

  1115. for all

  1116. of us

  1117. who have

  1118. never,

  1119. like they

  1120. did,

  1121. felt his

  1122. strong

  1123. embrace,

  1124. there is

  1125. coming a

  1126. day when

  1127. we too

  1128. will have

  1129. that kind

  1130. of relationship

  1131. with him.

  1132. We'll see

  1133. him with

  1134. our own

  1135. eyes,

  1136. face to

  1137. face,

  1138. we'll be

  1139. able to

  1140. touch him,

  1141. feel his

  1142. embrace,

  1143. we'll hear

  1144. from his

  1145. human lips

  1146. that yes,

  1147. he did

  1148. indeed hear

  1149. every single

  1150. prayer that

  1151. we prayed.

  1152. The

  1153. resurrection

  1154. of Jesus

  1155. is the

  1156. foundation

  1157. of all

  1158. that we

  1159. hope for

  1160. and long

  1161. for and

  1162. wait for

  1163. as Christians.

  1164. It's the

  1165. foundation

  1166. of our

  1167. salvation,

  1168. yes,

  1169. but to me

  1170. the most

  1171. precious thing

  1172. of all

  1173. is that it

  1174. means that

  1175. each of us

  1176. can personally

  1177. know Christ

  1178. himself today

  1179. because he's

  1180. alive.

  1181. We can have

  1182. that friendship

  1183. with him

  1184. today,

  1185. knowing that

  1186. one day

  1187. that distance

  1188. will be gone

  1189. and we

  1190. will have

  1191. his

  1192. continued

  1193. love and

  1194. friendship

  1195. forever

  1196. in person.

  1197. This is

  1198. what it's

  1199. all about.

  1200. Do you

  1201. remember what

  1202. Jesus prayed

  1203. on the

  1204. eve of

  1205. his death?

  1206. This is

  1207. what he

  1208. said to

  1209. his father,

  1210. John 17

  1211. 3,

  1212. he said,

  1213. now this

  1214. is eternal

  1215. life,

  1216. that they,

  1217. my followers,

  1218. those you

  1219. have given

  1220. me,

  1221. that they

  1222. might know

  1223. you,

  1224. the only

  1225. true God

  1226. and

  1227. me,

  1228. Jesus

  1229. Christ,

  1230. whom you

  1231. have sent.

  1232. This is

  1233. what life,

  1234. life eternal,

  1235. life forever

  1236. is all about.

  1237. It's all about

  1238. knowing Jesus.

  1239. Jesus goes

  1240. on in his

  1241. prayer.

  1242. We won't

  1243. go into

  1244. all the

  1245. details.

  1246. He prays

  1247. not just

  1248. for his

  1249. immediate

  1250. disciples,

  1251. but also

  1252. for those

  1253. who will

  1254. believe in

  1255. him through

  1256. their

  1257. message.

  1258. He prays

  1259. that they

  1260. would be

  1261. unified

  1262. and be

  1263. one,

  1264. that he

  1265. would be

  1266. in them.

  1267. He says,

  1268. I want

  1269. those you

  1270. have given

  1271. me to

  1272. be with

  1273. me where

  1274. I am

  1275. and to

  1276. see my

  1277. glory,

  1278. the glory

  1279. you have

  1280. given me.

  1281. Do you

  1282. know that

  1283. Jesus longs

  1284. for that

  1285. kind of

  1286. personal

  1287. relationship

  1288. with you?

  1289. he prayed

  1290. for it

  1291. just before

  1292. he went

  1293. to the

  1294. cross.

  1295. A face

  1296. to face

  1297. see my

  1298. glory,

  1299. you

  1300. with me

  1301. where I

  1302. am

  1303. kind of

  1304. relationship.

  1305. He went

  1306. to the

  1307. cross

  1308. because he

  1309. desires that

  1310. kind of

  1311. relationship

  1312. with you

  1313. and with

  1314. me.

  1315. And if

  1316. he hadn't

  1317. been raised

  1318. from the

  1319. dead,

  1320. we could

  1321. never have

  1322. that with

  1323. him.

  1324. So that's

  1325. the thing

  1326. that I'm

  1327. celebrating

  1328. most today

  1329. because he

  1330. rose from

  1331. the grave

  1332. and is

  1333. alive today.

  1334. We can

  1335. know Jesus

  1336. Christ himself

  1337. personally,

  1338. deeply,

  1339. and one

  1340. day visibly

  1341. and tangibly

  1342. face to

  1343. face.

  1344. Let's

  1345. pray.

  1346. Amen.

  1347. Father in

  1348. heaven,

  1349. we give

  1350. you glory.

  1351. Lord Jesus,

  1352. we give

  1353. you glory

  1354. and we

  1355. worship

  1356. you today.

  1357. You are

  1358. our king,

  1359. we believe.

  1360. You are

  1361. the son

  1362. of God

  1363. and we

  1364. thank you

  1365. that you

  1366. have even

  1367. brought

  1368. yourself

  1369. down to

  1370. the level

  1371. of brother

  1372. and a

  1373. friend.

  1374. We love

  1375. you so

  1376. much and

  1377. we long

  1378. for that

  1379. day when

  1380. you will

  1381. come back

  1382. and you

  1383. will raise

  1384. us to

  1385. new life

  1386. with you

  1387. forever.

  1388. May that

  1389. day come

  1390. quickly.

  1391. In your

  1392. name,

  1393. amen.

  1394. Amen.

  1395. Amen.

  1396. Amen.

  1397. Amen.

  1398. Amen.

  1399. Amen.

  1400. Amen.

  1401. Amen.

  1402. Amen.

  1403. Amen.
