  1. If you have your Bible with you this morning, you can open it up to John chapter 8.

    John 8 chapter mention

  2. For those of you who are visiting, we've been working our way through the Gospel of John

  3. kind of at a slow pace, just trying to milk it for all it's worth and learn as much as we can

  4. about Jesus and what he asks of us as his followers. So John chapter 8, we are in this morning,

    John 8 chapter mention

  5. and we're at about verse 43. And this morning, I didn't plan it this way, but we come to a

  6. difficult passage. Difficult for a couple of reasons. First of all, Jesus is about to say

  7. something that many in the audience find offensive. And even today, people still find these words

  8. offensive and are ashamed of them. Second, this is a difficult passage to know just what Jesus means

  9. and how does this apply to us. But we're going to try to look at it anyway. We don't

  10. just want to skip over it. We know that everything that Jesus says is important and for a reason.

  11. So John chapter 8, verse 43. And just before we read it, let me just remind us of what's going on.

    John 8:43

  12. Jesus is still at the temple courts. He's having a heated discussion with a crowd of people there.

  13. He's told them that they must believe that he is the one sent from God and that if they do not,

  14. they will die in their sin. They will stand guilty before God. He has told them the hard truth that

  15. they are slaves to sin who need to be set free and liberated. He said that it's by his word,

  16. by the truth that he speaks, that they can be set free. And people initially seem to believe him

  17. and were excited about him. But we saw that very quickly, this was maybe a superficial belief.

  18. And as this conversation goes on, it's coming out that many really do not believe in Jesus,

  19. at least not the hard parts of what he's saying, the part about being slaves to sin

  20. and things like that. So they begin to argue with Jesus about this.

  21. We are children of Abraham, they said. And Jesus responded,

  22. you are in the physical sense, but in the most important sense, you are not.

  23. So they tried another angle. We are children of God. He is our father. And Jesus challenged that too.

  24. Actually, no, you are not. If you were God's children, you would love me.

  25. Because I've been sent here from him to you.

  26. No, there's a major problem here. As Jesus said a moment ago in verse 37, he said,

  27. my word makes no progress in you. It's like it's not getting through.

  28. And he says a very similar thing here and now again in verse 43.

  29. Why is my language not clear to you? He says.

  30. A more literal translation. Why do you not understand what I'm saying?

  31. Now, if it were you or I that were speaking these words,

  32. I at least imagine that if I was to say them, it would be because I'm frustrated

  33. that the person I'm talking to just doesn't seem to be getting it.

  34. Why do you not understand what I'm saying?

  35. I'm not sure that Jesus necessarily feels the same as I would.

  36. We really don't know what he's feeling as he asks this question.

  37. But interestingly enough, he answers his own question.

  38. Why do you not understand what I am saying?

  39. It is because you cannot hear my word.

  40. It is because you cannot hear my word, he says.

  41. And probably all of us are wondering, well, what do you mean, Jesus,

  42. that we cannot hear your word? What do you mean?

  43. That's a strange thing to say.

  44. Why can't they hear your word?

  45. Well, everybody has some ideas about this.

  46. Some people, pretty much everybody agrees that it's not because they're physically deaf.

  47. But beyond that, there's a number of different ideas about what Jesus means here.

  48. Some people believe that they are unable to hear Jesus' words

  49. because they are spiritually deaf.

  50. Like in their souls.

  51. They just, they can't hear it.

  52. Some of those people would say that they maybe lack some kind of a spiritual organ

  53. that's needed in order to really hear and understand what Jesus is saying.

  54. Others would say it's because they're spiritually dead.

  55. They don't have spiritual life yet.

  56. And so they can't understand what Jesus is saying.

  57. A few people will point to the earlier chapters of John and say it's because they need to be born again

  58. by the Spirit first in order to be able to really hear and understand Jesus' words.

  59. And some others would say that they simply choose not to hear Jesus' words.

  60. Well, which is it?

  61. What's really going on here with these people?

  62. Why can't they hear your word, Jesus?

  63. I wish I could say with certainty what Jesus means here.

  64. You see, at some point we also have to ask the question of whether they are responsible

  65. for what they are hearing or not hearing from Jesus.

  66. Do these people know that they cannot hear his word?

  67. Do they think they can hear him and understand him?

  68. I've got lots of questions for Jesus here.

  69. But if I had to venture a guess, perhaps it means something like this.

  70. Because you are unable to hear my word, maybe,

  71. simply means you are unable to accept my word.

  72. To receive the word that you are hearing from me.

  73. And we sometimes use the word hear or the word listen like that.

  74. I know I do with my own kids.

  75. I might tell them to do something.

  76. And then see that they didn't do it.

  77. And I might say, why didn't you listen to me?

  78. Well, it's not that they didn't listen to me.

  79. They heard what I said.

  80. It's that they didn't do what I said.

  81. And so maybe that's what Jesus means here.

  82. You are unable to accept the word that you are hearing from me.

  83. And that inability to accept Jesus' word, I think,

  84. is maybe rooted not so much in ignorance,

  85. but in an unwillingness.

  86. Unwillingness.

  87. Not because they don't recognize that Jesus speaks the truth,

  88. but because they don't like the implications

  89. of the truth that Jesus speaks.

  90. That's my best guess here.

  91. Jesus' words are not getting through

  92. because for their part, they cannot accept his word.

  93. And that this cannot accept comes from a deep down,

  94. I will not accept what you are saying.

  95. I kept thinking back to what Jesus said earlier

  96. here in this Gospel of John.

  97. John 3, verse 19 and 20.

    John 3:19

  98. This is the verdict.

  99. Light has come into the world.

  100. That's Jesus.

  101. That's the word that he speaks.

  102. But people love darkness instead of light.

  103. Why?

  104. Because their deeds were evil.

  105. Everyone who does evil hates the light

  106. and will not come into the light

  107. for fear that their deeds will be exposed.

  108. I think that's maybe a good explanation of what's happening here

  109. as Jesus has this conversation with the crowd.

  110. Jesus is the light and he's speaking words that expose the truth.

  111. Truth like,

  112. you're a slave to sin and you need to be set free

  113. and I have come to set you free.

  114. But they are not wanting to hear this.

  115. They don't want to accept that reality.

  116. We are children of Abraham

  117. and therefore we are slaves of nobody.

  118. We have God for our Father

  119. and therefore we don't need you, Jesus.

  120. Jesus already said back in verse 37

  121. and this was something we've heard a lot of times in John

  122. that the people, some of them at least,

  123. are looking for a way to kill him.

  124. And so if that's true,

  125. then it makes sense

  126. that at this point

  127. they are no longer able or willing

  128. to hear what Jesus has to say to them.

  129. I mean, think of the state of their minds

  130. and their hearts right now.

  131. If they are plotting to kill him,

  132. it means that they have hardened their hearts towards Jesus.

  133. They've made up their minds about him.

  134. They're done listening to Jesus.

  135. Maybe you've had an argument with someone

  136. and you know that there comes that point

  137. in the conversation,

  138. the back and forth,

  139. where you're not listening to them

  140. and they're not listening to you.

  141. Perhaps something like that is happening here.

  142. Let's go on.

  143. Jesus says,

  144. Why do you not understand what I am saying?

  145. It is because you cannot hear my word.

  146. You are of your father,

  147. the devil,

  148. and you want to do the desires of your father.

  149. This is the part that is offensive.

  150. To them,

  151. to us,

  152. I didn't intentionally choose this passage

  153. for Mother's Day.

  154. This is what Jesus said that day.

  155. You are of your father,

  156. the devil,

  157. and you want to do

  158. the desires

  159. of your father.

  160. So why are they unable to accept,

  161. to hear Jesus anymore?

  162. Jesus says it's because they are children

  163. of the devil.

  164. And we're going to talk about what that means

  165. in a moment,

  166. but first,

  167. before we get to that,

  168. notice the second part of what Jesus

  169. says here.

  170. He says,

  171. You want to carry out your father's desires,

  172. or you want to do the desires

  173. of your father.

  174. Notice that it's not just the devil

  175. who has desires,

  176. but Jesus says that they themselves,

  177. the people there,

  178. they want to do the things

  179. that the devil desires,

  180. which in this situation here

  181. is to kill Jesus.

  182. Verse 44,

  183. he goes on,

  184. You are of your father,

  185. the devil,

  186. and you want to do the desires

  187. of your father?

  188. He was a murderer

  189. from the beginning,

  190. says Jesus.

  191. What was the devil's desire?

  192. To kill.

  193. He went after Adam and Eve

  194. to kill them.

  195. He deliberately enticed them

  196. to disobey God

  197. because he knew

  198. that it would result in their death.

  199. He was a murderer

  200. from the beginning,

  201. says Jesus,

  202. with murderous desires.

  203. And Jesus is saying

  204. to some of the people

  205. here in the crowd,

  206. you have the same desires

  207. that he does,

  208. that he had

  209. since the beginning of the world.

  210. Remember back to what John said earlier.

  211. The people love the darkness

  212. and hate the light.

  213. Why?

  214. Because their deeds were evil.

  215. So Jesus is shining the spotlight

  216. on the murderous intents

  217. of their hearts

  218. in this moment

  219. on what they are trying to do,

  220. which at this moment

  221. is very evil.

  222. It's to kill him.

  223. To take him out.

  224. And so I think this is why

  225. they are unable to hear.

  226. They are unable to accept

  227. what Jesus is saying.

  228. They're unable to come

  229. into the light

  230. and love the light

  231. because to accept

  232. what Jesus is saying

  233. is to admit

  234. that he's right.

  235. that we really are slaves

  236. who need to be set free.

  237. That we really are sinners

  238. who are on the hook with God.

  239. That we really need you, Jesus.

  240. And for some of them

  241. to admit that yes,

  242. we actually have been plotting

  243. to kill

  244. even though we know it's wrong.

  245. Let's come back

  246. to this statement.

  247. You belong to your father.

  248. You are of your father,

  249. the devil.

  250. My translation in my Bible says

  251. you belong to your father,

  252. the devil.

  253. What does that mean?

  254. You are of your father,

  255. the devil.

  256. What does it mean

  257. to be a child of the devil?

  258. Well, first of all,

  259. I don't think it means

  260. the same thing

  261. as to be a child of God.

  262. Those who are children of God,

  263. we've heard earlier

  264. from Jesus himself.

  265. To become a child of God,

  266. you need to be born again

  267. by the Spirit

  268. into his family.

  269. You become a child of God

  270. through a spiritual birth.

  271. It's not the same

  272. with the devil

  273. and being a child of his.

  274. It doesn't mean

  275. that you have somehow

  276. been born of the devil

  277. in a spiritual sense.

  278. It also doesn't mean

  279. that they have verbally

  280. pledged allegiance

  281. to the devil

  282. in some kind of ceremony

  283. or ritual.

  284. In fact,

  285. probably all of these people

  286. don't think

  287. that they are children

  288. of the devil.

  289. Thirdly,

  290. I don't think

  291. it means that they

  292. belong to the devil.

  293. I don't think

  294. Jesus is saying

  295. that the devil

  296. owns them

  297. or has ownership

  298. over them.

  299. And I don't think

  300. Jesus is saying

  301. that the devil

  302. controls them

  303. or makes them

  304. desire

  305. or makes them do

  306. what they are

  307. desiring and doing.

  308. So what does

  309. Jesus mean here?

  310. Well,

  311. the only sense

  312. in which they seem

  313. to be children

  314. of the devil

  315. that Jesus

  316. brings up

  317. again and again here,

  318. the sense in which

  319. the devil is their father

  320. is based on the fact

  321. that they desire

  322. and do

  323. the same things

  324. that he does.

  325. He is the father

  326. of those desires

  327. to murder.

  328. He is the father

  329. of those deeds

  330. to lie,

  331. to deceive

  332. because he was

  333. the first one

  334. to do them.

  335. And

  336. if I'm reading

  337. this right,

  338. what makes a person

  339. a child of the devil

  340. is that they

  341. take after their father.

  342. They take after

  343. the devil

  344. in their

  345. desires

  346. and in their deeds.

  347. The things they desire,

  348. the things that they do.

  349. Like father,

  350. like son.

  351. Let's see this

  352. in what Jesus says here.

  353. Back in verse 38,

  354. Jesus said this to them,

  355. I speak the things

  356. which I have seen

  357. with my father.

  358. Therefore,

  359. you also do

  360. the things

  361. which you heard

  362. from your father.

  363. In other words,

  364. Jesus' actions

  365. and his words

  366. line up

  367. with what he has

  368. heard and seen

  369. from God,

  370. his father.

  371. But he says

  372. that their actions

  373. and words

  374. line up with

  375. what they have

  376. heard and seen

  377. from their father,

  378. the devil.

  379. Verse 39,

  380. Abraham is our father,

  381. they answered.

  382. Jesus said to them,

  383. if you were

  384. Abraham's children,

  385. you would do

  386. what Abraham did.

  387. You would do

  388. the works

  389. that Abraham did.

  390. He goes on there

  391. to say,

  392. no,

  393. you're looking

  394. for a way

  395. to kill me.

  396. You are doing

  397. the works

  398. of your own father,

  399. the devil.

  400. In other words,

  401. it's their deeds,

  402. it's their works,

  403. it's their actions

  404. by which they are

  405. either children

  406. of Abraham

  407. or children

  408. of a different

  409. father.

  410. And their deeds,

  411. he says,

  412. don't match up

  413. with Abraham.

  414. So you are not

  415. truly his children,

  416. rather,

  417. you're trying

  418. to kill me.

  419. Your deeds,

  420. your actions,

  421. your behavior

  422. matches up

  423. to a different

  424. father,

  425. the devil.

  426. Again,

  427. in verse 44,

  428. he says,

  429. you are of

  430. your father,

  431. the devil,

  432. and you want

  433. to carry out

  434. your father's

  435. desires.

  436. We read this

  437. already,

  438. but it's not

  439. only their deeds

  440. by which they are

  441. children of the devil,

  442. but it's their

  443. desires.

  444. They have the

  445. same desires

  446. as he does,

  447. and so are

  448. children,

  449. of him.

  450. Like father,

  451. like son.

  452. He wants to kill.

  453. He is a murderer.

  454. He has the desire

  455. to harm people.

  456. You have that desire

  457. in your heart

  458. right now,

  459. says Jesus.

  460. Verse 44,

  461. he talks about

  462. how the devil

  463. is a liar.

  464. He was a murderer

  465. from the beginning,

  466. not holding

  467. to the truth.

  468. goes on to talk

  469. about how the devil

  470. lies all the time

  471. and how he is

  472. the father of lies,

  473. but his basic

  474. point coming down

  475. to verse 45

  476. is,

  477. you are like him,

  478. like father,

  479. like son,

  480. just as the devil

  481. did not hold

  482. to the truth

  483. and stand firm

  484. in it,

  485. in the same way,

  486. here I am

  487. speaking the truth

  488. to you,

  489. confronting you

  490. with the truth

  491. and yet because

  492. I tell the truth,

  493. you do not believe me,

  494. says Jesus

  495. in verse 45.

  496. You know it's the truth

  497. and because you know

  498. it's the truth,

  499. you do not want

  500. to hear it.

  501. So to be a child

  502. of the devil,

  503. the way that Jesus

  504. describes it

  505. is to have the same

  506. desires

  507. and deeds

  508. as the devil.

  509. It doesn't mean

  510. that you worship Satan.

  511. In fact,

  512. these religious leaders

  513. in the crowd,

  514. I mean,

  515. they're here at the

  516. temple courts

  517. in the temple

  518. of the Lord

  519. and they do many

  520. religious things.

  521. Being a child

  522. of the devil

  523. is something

  524. that probably

  525. everybody would deny

  526. and that's why

  527. these words of Jesus

  528. are so offensive

  529. to people

  530. and yet it's

  531. almost impossible

  532. to escape

  533. just how black

  534. and white a picture

  535. Jesus paints

  536. for us

  537. with these words.

  538. In his words,

  539. there are ultimately

  540. only two families

  541. that you can belong to.

  542. You can belong

  543. to God

  544. and have him

  545. for your father

  546. or you can belong

  547. to the devil

  548. and have him

  549. for your father.

  550. You can take up

  551. the desires

  552. and the deeds

  553. of one

  554. or the other.

  555. You can take up

  556. the family business

  557. of one

  558. or the other.

  559. Let's bring in

  560. one more key passage

  561. that sheds some light

  562. on this

  563. because we still

  564. might wonder,

  565. is there really

  566. nothing in between?

  567. Am I a child

  568. of the devil

  569. by default

  570. until I'm saved?

  571. Isn't there

  572. some kind of

  573. neutral

  574. in the middle

  575. before I

  576. make my choice?

  577. Let's look at

  578. 1 John

    1 John 3:8

  579. chapter 3

  580. verse 8.

  581. John was listening

  582. that day.

  583. This is what he wrote

  584. in his letter.

  585. He said,

  586. the one who does

  587. what is sinful

  588. is of the devil.

  589. Same language.

  590. Because the devil

  591. has been sinning

  592. from the beginning.

  593. Down in verse 10

  594. he says,

  595. this is how we know

  596. who the children

  597. of God are

  598. and who the children

  599. of the devil are.

  600. Anyone who does not

  601. do what is right

  602. is not God's child.

  603. Nor is anyone

  604. who does not love

  605. their brother

  606. and sister.

  607. So John confirms

  608. for us in his letter

  609. that yes,

  610. we are hearing

  611. Jesus correctly.

  612. It is black and white.

  613. you are either

  614. a child of God

  615. or a child

  616. of the devil.

  617. And what marks

  618. the difference

  619. between the two

  620. is the overall

  621. way of life

  622. that a person

  623. has.

  624. As we see

  625. in these words

  626. of John,

  627. doing what is

  628. sinful

  629. marks the life

  630. of someone

  631. who is of the devil.

  632. not doing

  633. what is right

  634. marks

  635. the life

  636. of someone

  637. who is

  638. a child

  639. of the devil.

  640. But doing

  641. what is right

  642. marks the life

  643. of those

  644. who are

  645. of God.

  646. Loving

  647. your brother

  648. and your sister

  649. marks the life

  650. of a child

  651. of God.

  652. Now this,

  653. of course,

  654. doesn't mean

  655. that a true

  656. child of God

  657. never blows it,

  658. never sins

  659. or makes mistakes.

  660. Abraham did,

  661. King David did,

  662. Peter did,

  663. and many more.

  664. But it means

  665. that the overall

  666. way of life

  667. of a child

  668. of God

  669. is that they

  670. generally

  671. do what is right

  672. and not what

  673. is sinful.

  674. They love

  675. their brother

  676. and their sister

  677. and not just

  678. live to please

  679. themselves

  680. at all costs.

  681. So if the

  682. mark of

  683. a child

  684. of the devil

  685. is that they

  686. generally do

  687. what is sinful

  688. like the devil

  689. does,

  690. then yes,

  691. by default,

  692. we all start

  693. out as children

  694. of the devil.

  695. As Paul said

  696. in Romans

    Romans 3:23

  697. chapter 3,

  698. verse 23,

  699. familiar verse,

  700. for all have

  701. sinned

  702. and fall short

  703. of the glory

  704. of God.

  705. That's where

  706. we all start.

  707. This is why

  708. we need Jesus

  709. to come,

  710. to help us,

  711. to save us.

  712. because from

  713. the start,

  714. we are all

  715. children of

  716. the devil.

  717. But listen,

  718. this is the

  719. hard truth

  720. that Jesus

  721. speaks to them

  722. that day,

  723. but there is

  724. also good news

  725. that Jesus

  726. brings.

  727. And we've been

  728. hearing this all

  729. throughout the

  730. gospel of John.

  731. He has come

  732. to give life.

  733. He has come

  734. to speak to us

  735. the truth

  736. by which,

  737. believing it,

  738. we can become

  739. children of God

  740. and have a

  741. change of family.

  742. He has come

  743. to set free

  744. those who are

  745. slaves to sin.

  746. Listen to these

  747. words from the

  748. beginning of

  749. John's gospel

  750. again.

  751. The true light

  752. that gives light

  753. to everyone

  754. was coming

  755. into the world.

  756. That's Jesus.

  757. He was in the

  758. world.

  759. And though the

  760. world was made

  761. through him,

  762. the world did

  763. not recognize

  764. him.

  765. He came to

  766. that which was

  767. his own,

  768. but his own

  769. did not receive

  770. him.

  771. Yet,

  772. to all who

  773. did receive

  774. him,

  775. here it is,

  776. to those who

  777. believed in

  778. his name,

  779. he gave the

  780. right to

  781. become children

  782. of God.

  783. There is a

  784. way to have a

  785. change of

  786. family,

  787. to get a

  788. new father,

  789. a different

  790. father,

  791. a better

  792. father,

  793. to become

  794. a child of

  795. God.

  796. And it's

  797. through believing

  798. in the name

  799. of Jesus.

  800. It's believing

  801. in him,

  802. that he is

  803. who he says

  804. he is,

  805. and believing

  806. the things

  807. that he said

  808. and has come

  809. to speak,

  810. the truth he

  811. comes to

  812. speak.

  813. the crowd

  814. here in

  815. the temple

  816. courts is

  817. doing the

  818. opposite.

  819. They are

  820. not listening

  821. to Jesus.

  822. They are

  823. not believing

  824. in him.

  825. They are

  826. not receiving

  827. him.

  828. Back to

  829. John chapter

    John 8:45

  830. 8,

  831. verse 45.

  832. Yet,

  833. because I

  834. tell you

  835. the truth,

  836. you do not

  837. believe me,

  838. says Jesus.

  839. Can any

  840. one of you

  841. prove me

  842. guilty of

  843. sin?

  844. If I am

  845. telling the

  846. truth,

  847. why don't

  848. you believe

  849. me?

  850. Quite the

  851. statement.

  852. And I

  853. think that

  854. we really

  855. need to

  856. ponder

  857. these words.

  858. Jesus is

  859. appealing to

  860. their

  861. consciences.

  862. My actions,

  863. he says,

  864. and my

  865. conduct

  866. match with

  867. what you

  868. know is

  869. good and

  870. right.

  871. does

  872. anybody

  873. want to

  874. come up

  875. and convict

  876. me of

  877. sin?

  878. Have I

  879. done

  880. anything

  881. wrong to

  882. anyone?

  883. Have I

  884. said

  885. anything

  886. wrong to

  887. anyone?

  888. If I

  889. lack

  890. integrity,

  891. tell me

  892. specifically

  893. what I

  894. have done

  895. or what

  896. I have

  897. said.

  898. They've

  899. already

  900. made a

  901. few

  902. accusations

  903. throughout,

  904. but Jesus

  905. has answered

  906. all of

  907. those so

  908. well to

  909. show that

  910. he is not

  911. guilty of

  912. anything.

  913. And so

  914. if I've

  915. been

  916. speaking and

  917. doing what

  918. is good

  919. and right

  920. and you

  921. know that,

  922. then you

  923. know that I

  924. am from

  925. God.

  926. You know

  927. that I

  928. speak the

  929. truth.

  930. So why

  931. won't you

  932. believe me?

  933. believe me?

  934. What a

  935. question.

  936. Jesus is

  937. appealing to

  938. their

  939. consciences.

  940. Why don't

  941. you believe

  942. me?

  943. What's

  944. keeping you

  945. from

  946. accepting

  947. what you

  948. know to

  949. be true

  950. about

  951. Jesus?

  952. Jesus?

  953. I think we

  954. all need to

  955. think about

  956. these words

  957. and answer

  958. for ourselves.

  959. But Jesus

  960. goes on.

  961. He actually

  962. answers this

  963. question too.

  964. He says,

  965. why don't

  966. you believe

  967. me?

  968. And then

  969. down in

  970. verse 47,

  971. whoever

  972. belongs to

  973. God

  974. hears

  975. what God

  976. says.

  977. The reason

  978. why you

  979. do not

  980. hear

  981. my words

  982. is that

  983. you are

  984. not

  985. of God.

  986. This is

  987. quite the

  988. statement.

  989. And I

  990. think that

  991. we should

  992. think about

  993. the word

  994. hear that

  995. Jesus uses

  996. here in

  997. the same

  998. senses

  999. above.

  1000. The reason

  1001. why you

  1002. do not

  1003. accept

  1004. the word

  1005. of God

  1006. is that

  1007. you are

  1008. not

  1009. of

  1010. God.

  1011. Now

  1012. there's a

  1013. whole

  1014. discussion

  1015. and debate

  1016. around

  1017. this.

  1018. I'm not

  1019. going to

  1020. get into

  1021. that this

  1022. morning.

  1023. There's a

  1024. temptation to

  1025. want to

  1026. change these

  1027. words around.

  1028. What do you

  1029. mean the

  1030. reason why we

  1031. do not

  1032. hear is

  1033. because we

  1034. are not

  1035. of God?

  1036. Well,

  1037. which comes

  1038. first?

  1039. Belonging to

  1040. God or

  1041. hearing and

  1042. believing?

  1043. Save that

  1044. for another

  1045. day.

  1046. either way,

  1047. we are at

  1048. the mercy

  1049. of God

  1050. because we

  1051. have all

  1052. sinned.

  1053. We need

  1054. a change

  1055. in family.

  1056. We need

  1057. to become

  1058. children of

  1059. God is

  1060. what Jesus

  1061. is saying

  1062. to them

  1063. there that

  1064. day.

  1065. As we've

  1066. been going

  1067. through this

  1068. series,

  1069. we've seen

  1070. some of

  1071. the marks

  1072. of being

  1073. a true

  1074. disciple

  1075. or a

  1076. true child

  1077. of Abraham,

  1078. a true

  1079. child of

  1080. God.

  1081. We've

  1082. heard some

  1083. really good

  1084. things from

  1085. Jesus.

  1086. To be a

  1087. true follower

  1088. of his,

  1089. we must

  1090. remain in

  1091. his word.

  1092. We must

  1093. continue to

  1094. hold to

  1095. his teaching

  1096. and not

  1097. move on

  1098. from it.

  1099. To be a

  1100. true child

  1101. of Abraham,

  1102. we must

  1103. do the

  1104. things that

  1105. Abraham

  1106. did.

  1107. Believe and

  1108. accept and

  1109. obey the

  1110. word of

  1111. God when

  1112. it comes

  1113. to us

  1114. like Abraham

  1115. did.

  1116. To be a

  1117. true child

  1118. of God,

  1119. we heard

  1120. last week,

  1121. we should

  1122. love and

  1123. love his

  1124. son,

  1125. the one

  1126. that he

  1127. has sent.

  1128. And this

  1129. morning,

  1130. we saw the

  1131. marks of

  1132. having a

  1133. different

  1134. father.

  1135. A child

  1136. of the

  1137. devil

  1138. desires and

  1139. does what

  1140. the devil

  1141. does,

  1142. like father,

  1143. like son.

  1144. A child

  1145. of the

  1146. devil refuses

  1147. to believe

  1148. Jesus because

  1149. he speaks

  1150. the truth.

  1151. A child

  1152. of the

  1153. devil will

  1154. not hear

  1155. or accept

  1156. or listen

  1157. to what

  1158. God says

  1159. just like

  1160. the devil

  1161. won't.

  1162. But a

  1163. true child

  1164. of God

  1165. will hear

  1166. and will

  1167. accept and

  1168. will listen

  1169. to what

  1170. God says.

  1171. Jesus has

  1172. been shining

  1173. the light of

  1174. truth on

  1175. these people.

  1176. He's been

  1177. exposing their

  1178. desires and

  1179. their deeds,

  1180. giving them

  1181. the hard

  1182. truth they

  1183. need to

  1184. come face

  1185. to face

  1186. with,

  1187. whose

  1188. family

  1189. they're

  1190. in.

  1191. And next

  1192. week we'll

  1193. see how

  1194. they respond

  1195. and as

  1196. you can

  1197. imagine it

  1198. wasn't

  1199. good.

  1200. They were

  1201. very angry.

  1202. But for

  1203. this morning

  1204. what about

  1205. you?

  1206. Whose

  1207. family are

  1208. you in?

  1209. Jesus only

  1210. gives us

  1211. two

  1212. possibilities.

  1213. Do you

  1214. love Jesus?

  1215. Do you

  1216. believe in

  1217. him?

  1218. The words

  1219. that he has

  1220. spoken,

  1221. do you

  1222. accept them?

  1223. do you

  1224. endeavor to

  1225. obey them

  1226. as all

  1227. true

  1228. children of

  1229. God do?

  1230. Or do

  1231. you love

  1232. certain other

  1233. things more?

  1234. Do you

  1235. have it in

  1236. your heart

  1237. to continue

  1238. doing some

  1239. of those

  1240. things that

  1241. you know

  1242. are wrong?

  1243. Do

  1244. Jesus'

  1245. words make

  1246. you angry?

  1247. Do they

  1248. provoke you

  1249. because of

  1250. things that

  1251. you might

  1252. have to

  1253. surrender or

  1254. give up if

  1255. you were to

  1256. believe in

  1257. him?

  1258. Is it

  1259. possible that

  1260. you have

  1261. been quite

  1262. religious just

  1263. like these

  1264. people and

  1265. yet your

  1266. heart is far

  1267. from God?

  1268. Far from

  1269. loving Jesus?

  1270. If it is, I

  1271. want to encourage

  1272. you with Jesus'

  1273. own words to

  1274. repent and

  1275. believe, to

  1276. humble yourself

  1277. before him,

  1278. to admit,

  1279. yes, I have

  1280. blown it, I am

  1281. a sinner.

  1282. Will you

  1283. forgive me?

  1284. God is in

  1285. the business

  1286. of forgiving

  1287. sins.

  1288. That's why he

  1289. sent Jesus.

  1290. He is

  1291. compassionate, he

  1292. is gracious,

  1293. and he will

  1294. forgive you if

  1295. you ask him.

  1296. And it will

  1297. cost to become

  1298. a follower of

  1299. Jesus.

  1300. There's no

  1301. denying that.

  1302. Jesus himself

  1303. said, for whoever

  1304. wants to save

  1305. their life will

  1306. lose it.

  1307. But whoever

  1308. loses their

  1309. life for me

  1310. will save it.

  1311. It will cost.

  1312. It costs

  1313. everything.

  1314. He said, what

  1315. good is it for

  1316. someone to gain

  1317. the whole world

  1318. yet forfeit

  1319. their soul?

  1320. The cost is

  1321. well worth it

  1322. for what we

  1323. receive from

  1324. Jesus.

  1325. Eternal life.

  1326. That's what's

  1327. at stake here.

  1328. Life and

  1329. death.

  1330. Many of you

  1331. here this

  1332. morning are

  1333. children of

  1334. God and

  1335. you love

  1336. Jesus.

  1337. I want to

  1338. encourage you

  1339. to keep

  1340. listening to

  1341. Jesus, to

  1342. stay in

  1343. his word, to

  1344. continue to

  1345. hold tightly

  1346. to his

  1347. teaching, and

  1348. as Peter said,

  1349. to make every

  1350. effort to

  1351. obey his

  1352. commands, to

  1353. do what's

  1354. right, to

  1355. love your

  1356. brother and

  1357. your sister,

  1358. as all true

  1359. children of

  1360. God should

  1361. and do.

  1362. And as a

  1363. last thought,

  1364. God, these

  1365. words are

  1366. offensive.

  1367. We're not

  1368. going to

  1369. pretend that

  1370. they're not.

  1371. And so I

  1372. want to

  1373. encourage you

  1374. to take

  1375. care about

  1376. talking about

  1377. being children

  1378. of the devil

  1379. to people in

  1380. our world, in

  1381. our community,

  1382. people who

  1383. don't know

  1384. Christ.

  1385. If you take

  1386. these words

  1387. upon your

  1388. lips, I

  1389. want to

  1390. encourage you

  1391. to do it

  1392. with the

  1393. utmost

  1394. humility and

  1395. gentleness,

  1396. and never

  1397. with the

  1398. intent to

  1399. insult or

  1400. deride or

  1401. to give

  1402. somebody a

  1403. spiritual slap

  1404. in the face,

  1405. you're a

  1406. child of the

  1407. devil.

  1408. I don't

  1409. believe that's

  1410. the way

  1411. Jesus spoke

  1412. these words

  1413. and I don't

  1414. think we

  1415. should either.

  1416. Let's

  1417. pray.

  1418. Father in

  1419. heaven, thank

  1420. you for

  1421. sending Jesus.

  1422. Lord Jesus,

  1423. thank you for

  1424. speaking these

  1425. words to us.

  1426. We don't

  1427. necessarily like

  1428. these words.

  1429. They are

  1430. uncomfortable,

  1431. they are

  1432. hard, and

  1433. yet we know

  1434. that they

  1435. are true and

  1436. we need to

  1437. hear them.

  1438. Thank you

  1439. that you have

  1440. made a way

  1441. for us to

  1442. become children

  1443. of God.

  1444. It's a

  1445. wonderful gift.

  1446. We praise

  1447. your name for

  1448. it.

  1449. Amen.
