  1. Back in the Gospel of John this morning, we left off last Sunday with Jesus saying some

  2. very hard words to the Jews who were gathered in the temple courts.

  3. Jesus told them that they were of their father, the devil.

  4. And the reason he said that was because they were desiring the same things as the devil

  5. and doing the same things as the devil.

  6. They were seeking to murder him and they were choosing to reject his words, which they knew to be true.

  7. And we recalled last Sunday how all of this is explained well by what John said earlier in his Gospel.

  8. John 3, verse 19 and 20.

    John 3:19

  9. This is the verdict.

  10. Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of the light

  11. because their deeds were evil.

  12. Everyone who does evil hates the light and will not come into the light

  13. for fear that their deeds will be exposed.

  14. So Jesus has been shining the light of truth upon them, exposing their evil deeds.

  15. And now we will see how the people respond to this.

  16. John 8, verse 48.

    John 8:48

  17. The Jews answered him,

  18. Aren't we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?

  19. Now this isn't the first time that they've accused Jesus of being demon-possessed.

  20. They did that back in chapter 7, verse 20.

  21. But this is the first time that they've called him a Samaritan.

  22. And they probably don't mean that in the true sense of the word,

  23. as in being from the Samaritan people.

  24. No, they're using this word as an insult, a term of contempt.

  25. Most of you know that in Jesus' day,

  26. the Jews generally looked down upon the Samaritans.

  27. There was hostility and suspicion between them.

  28. And the Jews saw the Samaritans as half-breeds and as being unclean.

  29. It's like they're saying,

  30. Didn't we say it well when we said that you were demon-possessed?

  31. A good-for-nothing half-breed?

  32. You can feel the anger and the contempt that's flowing from them

  33. as they call Jesus' names and insult him.

  34. Does Jesus know what it feels like to be insulted?

  35. Does Jesus know what it feels like to be insulted?

  36. To have the anger of people lash out at him?

  37. He does.

  38. Even though he was the perfect son of God,

  39. he still felt deeply the insults of people.

  40. These words have just been rolling around in my head this week.

  41. You dishonor me, said Jesus.

  42. It's not just a cold statement of the facts.

  43. Jesus experienced it personally.

  44. He felt dishonored.

  45. Not only were they venting their anger and hatred towards him

  46. with the things that they said,

  47. but the things that they were saying couldn't have been more false.

  48. They accused the very Son of God of having a demon,

  49. of being demon-possessed.

  50. They called him a Samaritan.

  51. One of those people that we hate.

  52. Our enemies.

  53. What amazes me here is how Jesus responds.

  54. He does not retaliate in the least.

  55. He doesn't insult them back.

  56. He does say,

  57. I do not have a demon.

  58. But there are no...

  59. Words of insult.

  60. I know if I was in that situation,

  61. I kept thinking,

  62. man, I would be so angry.

  63. I would be tempted.

  64. What can I say to change the minds of the people here in this crowd right now?

  65. Jesus doesn't do that.

  66. He says,

  67. I am not possessed by a demon.

  68. I'm here to honor my Father,

  69. and you dishonor me.

  70. Verse 50, Jesus goes on.

  71. He says,

  72. I am not seeking glory for myself.

  73. But there is one who seeks it.

  74. And he is the judge.

  75. So even though Jesus feels the dishonoring accusations

  76. and the slanderous charges of the people,

  77. he does not seek to vindicate himself in their eyes.

  78. He says,

  79. you dishonor me,

  80. but I am not here to seek my glory.

  81. Rather than taking his reputation into his own hands

  82. and fighting for it

  83. or trying to prove that,

  84. yes, I am who I say I am,

  85. he will leave his reputation

  86. and his honor

  87. and his name

  88. to the one who does seek his glory,

  89. his Father,

  90. God.

  91. He will leave his reputation

  92. and his honor

  93. to the true judge,

  94. to God.

  95. How Jesus responds in this moment

  96. reminded me of what we've been talking about

  97. in Sunday school

  98. back in 1 Peter

  99. about suffering.

  100. And Peter actually points to Jesus

  101. and perhaps even had this very moment in mind

  102. when Jesus was insulted.

  103. In 1 Peter 2, verse 23,

    1 Peter 2:23

  104. this is what Peter says.

  105. He says,

  106. when they hurled their insults at Jesus,

  107. he did not retaliate.

  108. When he suffered,

  109. he made no threats.

  110. Instead,

  111. he entrusted himself

  112. to him who judges justly.

  113. He deliberately

  114. and consciously

  115. committed himself,

  116. his reputation,

  117. his honor,

  118. his good name

  119. to the judge,

  120. to the true judge,

  121. to God.

  122. At this point,

  123. Jesus,

  124. I imagine at least in my head,

  125. addresses everyone

  126. and probably speaks in a loud voice

  127. and gives another one of those amazing promises.

  128. A truly, truly moment.

  129. Very truly,

  130. or truly, truly,

  131. I tell you,

  132. whoever obeys my word

  133. will never see death.

  134. Literally,

  135. whoever keeps my word

  136. will never see death

  137. unto the ages.

  138. What a statement.

  139. Jesus has talked about this before,

  140. but again,

  141. he's using different words here.

  142. He's offering people eternal life.

  143. We'll never,

  144. ever see death

  145. unto the ages,

  146. forever.

  147. And to receive this,

  148. he says,

  149. you must keep

  150. my word.

  151. Some translations say,

  152. obey,

  153. keep,

  154. and obey

  155. are kind of sometimes

  156. the same thing.

  157. Keep my command,

  158. obey my word.

  159. Truly,

  160. truly,

  161. I say to you,

  162. whoever of you

  163. obeys my word,

  164. keeps my word,

  165. you will not ever

  166. see death

  167. unto the ages,

  168. forever.

  169. Now,

  170. there's only one

  171. who can actually

  172. make good

  173. and deliver

  174. on an offer

  175. like that,

  176. and that's God.

  177. God is the source

  178. and giver

  179. of all life.

  180. And so,

  181. in order to accept

  182. these words of Jesus,

  183. we must have faith

  184. that God

  185. is the one

  186. who has sent him

  187. with this message

  188. and that he intends

  189. to give this gift

  190. of eternal life

  191. through Jesus.

  192. But even before

  193. we get to the response

  194. of the people,

  195. I have to say

  196. that it's not going

  197. to surprise me

  198. if the people

  199. do not believe Jesus.

  200. How many funerals

  201. do you have to attend

  202. before you come

  203. to know that death

  204. is an unchangeable

  205. certainty

  206. for every human being?

  207. In the ordinary

  208. earthly sense

  209. of the words,

  210. to not see death

  211. means to never die.

  212. But it seems

  213. that everyone

  214. dies eventually.

  215. And now here's

  216. a man claiming

  217. that if you obey

  218. his word,

  219. you can become

  220. the exception

  221. to this law

  222. of the universe

  223. and cheat death

  224. not just once

  225. or twice

  226. but forever.

  227. There's only one

  228. being who is

  229. powerful enough

  230. to make that happen.

  231. And it's the one

  232. who created us

  233. and gave us life

  234. in the first place.

  235. God.

  236. Unless Jesus

  237. speaks for him

  238. and comes from him

  239. then they're right

  240. to just laugh him

  241. off here.

  242. Let's look at

  243. how they respond.

  244. Verse 52.

  245. At this

  246. they exclaimed

  247. now we know

  248. that you are

  249. demon possessed.

  250. Abraham died

  251. and so did

  252. the prophets

  253. yet you say

  254. that whoever

  255. obeys your word

  256. will never

  257. taste death?

  258. Again,

  259. they call him

  260. demon possessed.

  261. In other words,

  262. what you're saying

  263. Jesus is

  264. absolute

  265. baloney.

  266. Let's take a little

  267. inventory here.

  268. Let's think about

  269. the men that we know

  270. God chose

  271. specially in history.

  272. Men like Abraham

  273. and the prophets.

  274. We know that God

  275. chose them

  276. specially

  277. and spoke through them

  278. and yet all of them

  279. died.

  280. Except of course

  281. Elijah

  282. but they forgot

  283. that part.

  284. All of them

  285. died and you're

  286. saying that if

  287. anyone obeys

  288. your word

  289. they will never

  290. taste death

  291. unto eternity?

  292. I don't think so.

  293. No.

  294. Not even the

  295. great forefather

  296. of our faith

  297. or the prophets

  298. themselves

  299. escaped death.

  300. So don't even

  301. think that you can

  302. shovel baloney

  303. like this

  304. saying that

  305. whoever keeps

  306. your word

  307. will live forever.

  308. Never die.

  309. They go on.

  310. Are you

  311. greater than

  312. our father

  313. Abraham?

  314. He died

  315. and so did

  316. the prophets.

  317. Who do you

  318. think you are?

  319. You can just

  320. feel it in their

  321. voices

  322. and the words

  323. they say.

  324. These are quite

  325. the questions.

  326. All of them

  327. are rhetorical.

  328. especially this

  329. first question.

  330. Are you

  331. greater than

  332. our father

  333. Abraham?

  334. The people

  335. in the crowd

  336. there,

  337. they weren't

  338. totally irrational

  339. or stupid.

  340. Do you hear

  341. what they're

  342. asking?

  343. It's a rhetorical

  344. question and of

  345. course the answer

  346. is no.

  347. But they're

  348. on the right

  349. track.

  350. Are you

  351. greater than

  352. our father

  353. Abraham?

  354. They say.

  355. No.

  356. Who died?

  357. Their answer

  358. is no.

  359. I don't think

  360. so.

  361. But listen to

  362. the reasoning

  363. that's going

  364. on in their

  365. minds.

  366. The only way

  367. that we could

  368. accept what

  369. you are saying

  370. Jesus to be

  371. true is if

  372. you were

  373. greater than

  374. Abraham.

  375. We don't

  376. think you

  377. are.

  378. Is if you

  379. were greater

  380. than the

  381. prophets.

  382. We don't

  383. think you

  384. are.

  385. But if you

  386. were somehow

  387. greater,

  388. then perhaps

  389. you could say

  390. such a thing

  391. and we

  392. would believe

  393. you and

  394. it would

  395. be true.

  396. So the

  397. people recognize

  398. that Jesus

  399. is claiming

  400. something that

  401. goes way

  402. beyond what

  403. has ever been

  404. claimed by the

  405. people God

  406. chose to speak

  407. through in the

  408. past.

  409. And they

  410. asked Jesus

  411. this question

  412. at the end

  413. of this

  414. verse.

  415. Who do you

  416. think you

  417. are?

  418. Literally.

  419. Whom do you

  420. make yourself

  421. out to be?

  422. Who do you

  423. glory?

  424. Jesus

  425. answers

  426. verse 54.

  427. If I

  428. glorify

  429. myself,

  430. my glory

  431. means

  432. nothing.

  433. My

  434. Father,

  435. whom you

  436. claim is

  437. your God,

  438. is the

  439. one who

  440. glorifies

  441. me.

  442. In other

  443. words,

  444. I'm not

  445. making myself

  446. to be

  447. anything.

  448. I'm not

  449. here to

  450. get glory

  451. for myself.

  452. I'm here

  453. to speak

  454. the truth

  455. that the

  456. Father has

  457. sent me

  458. to speak.

  459. And He

  460. is the

  461. one who

  462. will glorify

  463. me.

  464. For the

  465. third time

  466. in the

  467. gospel,

  468. if my

  469. counting is

  470. right,

  471. Jesus just

  472. claimed again

  473. that God

  474. is going

  475. to glorify

  476. Him.

  477. It's quite

  478. a thing

  479. to say.

  480. Jesus

  481. goes on,

  482. verse 55.

  483. He says,

  484. though you

  485. do not

  486. know Him,

  487. my Father,

  488. God,

  489. I know

  490. Him.

  491. If I

  492. said I

  493. did not,

  494. I would

  495. be like

  496. you,

  497. a liar.

  498. But I

  499. do know

  500. Him and

  501. obey His

  502. word,

  503. says Jesus.

  504. Again,

  505. Jesus tells

  506. them,

  507. you do

  508. not know

  509. God.

  510. You think

  511. you do,

  512. but you

  513. do not.

  514. He says,

  515. I do

  516. know Him.

  517. I

  518. couldn't

  519. even deny

  520. that I

  521. know Him.

  522. If I

  523. were to

  524. say that I

  525. didn't know

  526. Him,

  527. I would

  528. be lying.

  529. No,

  530. His words

  531. are a little

  532. more pointed

  533. than that.

  534. He says,

  535. I would

  536. be like

  537. you,

  538. a liar.

  539. And I

  540. don't think

  541. Jesus is

  542. just calling

  543. names here.

  544. I think

  545. He is,

  546. again,

  547. speaking what

  548. He knows

  549. to be

  550. true.

  551. And these

  552. people are

  553. sure to

  554. take offense

  555. at that.

  556. Verse 56,

  557. Jesus goes

  558. on.

  559. He says,

  560. Your father,

  561. Abraham,

  562. rejoiced at

  563. the thought

  564. of seeing

  565. my day.

  566. He saw

  567. it and

  568. was glad.

  569. This is

  570. another amazing

  571. statement of

  572. Jesus.

  573. First,

  574. let's notice

  575. how happy

  576. Abraham

  577. was.

  578. My

  579. translation is

  580. a little

  581. flat.

  582. Literally,

  583. it's more

  584. like your

  585. father,

  586. Abraham,

  587. was

  588. overjoyed

  589. that he

  590. would see

  591. my day.

  592. So not

  593. just a little

  594. bit of joy,

  595. but Abraham

  596. had lots

  597. of joy.

  598. Why?

  599. Let's think

  600. about the

  601. cause of

  602. that great

  603. joy.

  604. He was

  605. overjoyed,

  606. Jesus says,

  607. that he

  608. would see

  609. my day.

  610. What does

  611. that mean?

  612. And then

  613. Jesus says

  614. one thing

  615. more.

  616. He says,

  617. and he

  618. saw it.

  619. As in,

  620. it's done.

  621. He saw

  622. it.

  623. Already

  624. happened.

  625. What is

  626. Jesus talking

  627. about?

  628. I'll be the

  629. first to admit

  630. that I don't

  631. know what

  632. Jesus means

  633. by this.

  634. There's a

  635. few good

  636. ideas and

  637. guesses out

  638. there.

  639. Some think

  640. that this

  641. refers to a

  642. particular

  643. moment back

  644. in history

  645. when Abraham,

  646. perhaps God,

  647. revealed directly

  648. to him

  649. that someday

  650. Jesus would

  651. come.

  652. Maybe it's

  653. just not

  654. recorded in

  655. Genesis.

  656. Others think

  657. it refers to

  658. how Abraham

  659. rejoiced

  660. greatly in

  661. the birth of

  662. the promised

  663. son,

  664. Isaac.

  665. And that

  666. kind of

  667. through that

  668. he was

  669. anticipating

  670. the coming

  671. of the

  672. ultimate

  673. son who

  674. would fulfill

  675. all of

  676. God's

  677. promises.

  678. some people

  679. think that

  680. Abraham

  681. rejoiced

  682. greatly

  683. when he

  684. saw the

  685. day of

  686. Jesus,

  687. not back

  688. in the

  689. past,

  690. but right

  691. now in

  692. the present.

  693. Just like

  694. Moses and

  695. Elijah were

  696. there at

  697. the

  698. transfiguration,

  699. perhaps Abraham

  700. is also

  701. watching this

  702. and seeing

  703. the day of

  704. Christ unfolding

  705. right in

  706. front of

  707. his eyes

  708. and he's

  709. rejoicing

  710. greatly.

  711. I'm not

  712. sure what

  713. Jesus means

  714. here,

  715. but this

  716. is how the

  717. people in

  718. the crowd

  719. responded to

  720. his statement.

  721. You are

  722. not yet

  723. 50 years

  724. old,

  725. they answered,

  726. and you

  727. have seen

  728. Abraham?

  729. It's kind

  730. of like a

  731. mocking

  732. statement.

  733. Like,

  734. look at

  735. you.

  736. You're

  737. what,

  738. 30-something?

  739. You're

  740. not even

  741. 50 yet,

  742. and you

  743. think you've

  744. seen

  745. Abraham?

  746. Like,

  747. the guy

  748. who lived

  749. 2,000

  750. years ago?

  751. And then

  752. Jesus

  753. says this,

  754. verse 58,

  755. Truly,

  756. truly,

  757. I say

  758. to you,

  759. before

  760. Abraham

  761. was born,

  762. I am.

  763. What a

  764. statement.

  765. Before

  766. Abraham

  767. was born,

  768. I am.

  769. This is

  770. probably

  771. the greatest

  772. thing that

  773. Jesus ever

  774. claimed while

  775. he walked

  776. the earth.

  777. death.

  778. At least

  779. it's up

  780. in the

  781. top three,

  782. perhaps.

  783. And there's

  784. so much

  785. in these

  786. words.

  787. First,

  788. let's notice

  789. the way

  790. that this

  791. statement

  792. works.

  793. He says,

  794. before Abraham

  795. was born,

  796. I am.

  797. Jesus is

  798. claiming to

  799. have existed

  800. before the

  801. day of

  802. Abraham's

  803. birth,

  804. 2,000

  805. years

  806. earlier.

  807. father.

  808. That in

  809. itself is

  810. astounding.

  811. And this

  812. is why

  813. John began

  814. his gospel

  815. in the way

  816. he did.

  817. We're going

  818. to start

  819. this story

  820. at the

  821. beginning of

  822. Jesus'

  823. story,

  824. thought

  825. John.

  826. not his

  827. birth,

  828. no,

  829. the beginning.

  830. In the

  831. beginning

  832. was the

  833. word,

  834. and the

  835. word was

  836. with God.

  837. All things

  838. were created

  839. through him,

  840. and then

  841. later on

  842. the word

  843. became flesh

  844. and lived

  845. among us.

  846. John was

  847. listening that

  848. day.

  849. Jesus is

  850. no mere

  851. man.

  852. Abraham

  853. was a

  854. mere man.

  855. The

  856. prophets

  857. were mere

  858. men,

  859. but Jesus

  860. is in

  861. fact greater

  862. than all

  863. of them,

  864. because he

  865. existed with

  866. God long

  867. before any

  868. of them were

  869. even born.

  870. This is at

  871. least one

  872. thing that

  873. Jesus is

  874. saying.

  875. But this

  876. is in all.

  877. If this was

  878. all Jesus

  879. meant, he

  880. could have

  881. simply said,

  882. before Abraham

  883. was born,

  884. I was.

  885. But he

  886. doesn't say

  887. I was.

  888. He says,

  889. I am.

  890. This is

  891. undoubtedly

  892. a claim

  893. of Jesus

  894. to be

  895. God,

  896. to be

  897. the Lord,

  898. to be

  899. Yahweh.

  900. This is the

  901. name that

  902. God the

  903. Creator

  904. gives to

  905. himself,

  906. ascribes

  907. for himself.

  908. Perhaps you

  909. remember that

  910. story back

  911. in Exodus

    Exodus 3:13

  912. chapter 3

  913. verse 13

  914. and 14.

  915. Moses is

  916. at the

  917. burning bush,

  918. this bush

  919. that's burning

  920. and yet

  921. not being

  922. consumed.

  923. And God

  924. is speaking

  925. out of this

  926. bush and

  927. having a

  928. conversation

  929. with Moses

  930. about going

  931. to deliver

  932. the people

  933. from Egypt.

  934. And Moses

  935. says to God,

  936. suppose I

  937. go to the

  938. Israelites

  939. and say

  940. to them,

  941. the God

  942. of your

  943. fathers has

  944. sent me

  945. to you.

  946. And they

  947. ask me,

  948. what's his

  949. name?

  950. Then what

  951. shall I

  952. tell them?

  953. God

  954. said to

  955. Moses,

  956. Moses,

  957. I am

  958. who I

  959. am.

  960. This is

  961. what you're

  962. to say

  963. to the

  964. Israelites.

  965. I am

  966. has sent

  967. me to

  968. you.

  969. Now there's

  970. so much

  971. in there.

  972. I mean,

  973. we could

  974. have a

  975. whole sermon

  976. on that

  977. alone.

  978. What does

  979. that mean?

  980. It's almost

  981. as if God

  982. is saying

  983. there is

  984. no one

  985. name that

  986. captures

  987. all of

  988. who I

  989. am.

  990. I am

  991. who I

  992. am in

  993. all my

  994. glory.

  995. But this

  996. is what

  997. he,

  998. the name

  999. that he

  1000. takes for

  1001. himself and

  1002. tells Moses

  1003. to take

  1004. to the

  1005. people in

  1006. Egypt.

  1007. Tell them

  1008. that I

  1009. am has

  1010. sent me

  1011. to you.

  1012. The one

  1013. who is.

  1014. This

  1015. name seems

  1016. to refer

  1017. to how

  1018. God

  1019. exists.

  1020. He is

  1021. self-existent.

  1022. He is the

  1023. one who

  1024. always was,

  1025. is,

  1026. and always

  1027. will be.

  1028. And here,

  1029. amazingly,

  1030. Jesus

  1031. takes that

  1032. name upon

  1033. his own

  1034. lips.

  1035. He says,

  1036. before Abraham

  1037. was born,

  1038. I am.

  1039. And the

  1040. Jewish people

  1041. there that

  1042. day understood

  1043. what Jesus

  1044. was saying.

  1045. They took

  1046. it as

  1047. blasphemy.

  1048. And we

  1049. know this

  1050. because of

  1051. how they

  1052. responded.

  1053. In verse

  1054. 59,

  1055. that this,

  1056. they picked

  1057. up stones

  1058. to stone

  1059. him.

  1060. And

  1061. Jesus not

  1062. only claimed

  1063. to exist

  1064. before Abraham

  1065. was born,

  1066. he claimed

  1067. to be

  1068. God.

  1069. He claimed

  1070. to be

  1071. not just

  1072. any God

  1073. or another

  1074. God,

  1075. but he

  1076. claimed to

  1077. be the

  1078. one true

  1079. God,

  1080. the Lord,

  1081. Yahweh,

  1082. the great

  1083. I am.

  1084. And this

  1085. is why John

  1086. starts his

  1087. gospel the

  1088. way he

  1089. does.

  1090. It's kind

  1091. of a strange

  1092. starting at

  1093. first,

  1094. but it's

  1095. starting to

  1096. make sense.

  1097. in the

  1098. beginning

  1099. was the

  1100. word,

  1101. and the

  1102. word was

  1103. with God,

  1104. and the

  1105. word was

  1106. God.

  1107. The one

  1108. who was

  1109. God

  1110. became

  1111. flesh

  1112. and dwelt

  1113. among us.

  1114. God

  1115. himself

  1116. took on

  1117. human flesh

  1118. and came

  1119. to live

  1120. among us.

  1121. the great

  1122. I am

  1123. walked the

  1124. earth.

  1125. Jesus

  1126. does indeed

  1127. make some

  1128. astonishing

  1129. claims and

  1130. offers and

  1131. promises,

  1132. and we've

  1133. seen lots of

  1134. these in

  1135. John,

  1136. like resurrection

  1137. from the

  1138. dead for

  1139. those who

  1140. believe,

  1141. and eternal

  1142. life for

  1143. those who

  1144. keep his

  1145. word,

  1146. and forgiveness

  1147. of sins.

  1148. And the

  1149. Jews were

  1150. right that

  1151. day in

  1152. thinking that

  1153. for him

  1154. to deliver

  1155. on these

  1156. things,

  1157. he's got

  1158. to be

  1159. greater than

  1160. Abraham,

  1161. and greater

  1162. than the

  1163. prophets.

  1164. Is he?

  1165. In Jesus'

  1166. own words,

  1167. I am.

  1168. this is

  1169. quite the

  1170. claim.

  1171. But this

  1172. claim has

  1173. not come

  1174. without

  1175. evidence.

  1176. All of

  1177. these people

  1178. have heard

  1179. of it,

  1180. many of

  1181. them have

  1182. seen it.

  1183. Jesus

  1184. does the

  1185. very things

  1186. that only

  1187. the great

  1188. I am

  1189. can do.

  1190. He

  1191. calms

  1192. storms with

  1193. his words.

  1194. He heals

  1195. even the

  1196. worst of

  1197. debilitating

  1198. sicknesses

  1199. and diseases.

  1200. He provides

  1201. bread for

  1202. multitudes

  1203. out in the

  1204. middle of

  1205. nowhere.

  1206. And somehow

  1207. he knows the

  1208. very thoughts

  1209. of people's

  1210. hearts as

  1211. they're thinking

  1212. them.

  1213. Like

  1214. father,

  1215. like son.

  1216. The signs

  1217. are everywhere

  1218. that this is

  1219. no ordinary

  1220. man.

  1221. This isn't

  1222. even just a

  1223. specially chosen

  1224. man like

  1225. Abraham was.

  1226. This man

  1227. Jesus is

  1228. God

  1229. himself

  1230. in human

  1231. flesh.

  1232. He is the

  1233. great I am

  1234. who has come

  1235. down from

  1236. heaven to

  1237. live among

  1238. us and

  1239. amazingly

  1240. to give his

  1241. life for us

  1242. and to save

  1243. us.

  1244. I hope you

  1245. see that

  1246. here and I

  1247. hope you

  1248. believe that

  1249. and I hope

  1250. that in your

  1251. heart you are

  1252. rejoicing just

  1253. like Abraham

  1254. was even as

  1255. you think about

  1256. how this is

  1257. true.

  1258. But this

  1259. moment in the

  1260. story of

  1261. Jesus really

  1262. is bittersweet.

  1263. It's the

  1264. moment in

  1265. which he

  1266. wonderfully

  1267. declares who

  1268. he is.

  1269. But it's

  1270. also the

  1271. moment in

  1272. which the

  1273. people listening

  1274. try to

  1275. commit one

  1276. of the

  1277. greatest

  1278. evils that

  1279. they could

  1280. possibly do.

  1281. They try

  1282. to kill

  1283. him.

  1284. John

  1285. tells us

  1286. that they

  1287. picked up

  1288. stones to

  1289. stone him

  1290. but Jesus

  1291. hid himself

  1292. and slipped

  1293. away from

  1294. the temple

  1295. grounds.

  1296. We don't

  1297. know how

  1298. exactly but

  1299. one way or

  1300. another he

  1301. got away and

  1302. they weren't

  1303. actually able to

  1304. carry out the

  1305. deed.

  1306. But it's

  1307. bittersweet.

  1308. I mean think

  1309. about this.

  1310. Jesus reveals

  1311. that he is

  1312. the great I

  1313. am and in

  1314. that same

  1315. moment they

  1316. tried to

  1317. kill him.

  1318. What about

  1319. you?

  1320. Do you

  1321. believe that

  1322. Jesus is

  1323. the great

  1324. I am?

  1325. God who

  1326. has come

  1327. down into

  1328. our world

  1329. and taken

  1330. on human

  1331. flesh and

  1332. lived among

  1333. us?

  1334. Do you

  1335. believe that

  1336. he's greater

  1337. than Abraham?

  1338. Greater than

  1339. all the

  1340. prophets?

  1341. Do you

  1342. believe that

  1343. he can

  1344. deliver on

  1345. all that

  1346. he's promised

  1347. to do

  1348. for those

  1349. who believe

  1350. in him?

  1351. God can

  1352. forgive sins.

  1353. God can

  1354. raise people

  1355. back to

  1356. life after

  1357. they die.

  1358. God can

  1359. give eternal

  1360. life,

  1361. sustain life

  1362. forever.

  1363. And he

  1364. himself has

  1365. come down

  1366. to offer

  1367. all of this

  1368. in his

  1369. words to

  1370. whoever believes.

  1371. or in

  1372. this

  1373. passage,

  1374. if you

  1375. keep my

  1376. word,

  1377. to those

  1378. who keep

  1379. his

  1380. word.

  1381. Do you

  1382. believe in

  1383. Jesus?

  1384. Are you

  1385. keeping his

  1386. word?

  1387. Lord,

  1388. let's

  1389. pray.

  1390. Lord

  1391. Jesus,

  1392. we thank

  1393. you for

  1394. coming down.

  1395. We can't

  1396. even imagine

  1397. what it was

  1398. like to be

  1399. there that

  1400. day and

  1401. to face

  1402. what you

  1403. faced,

  1404. the hatred,

  1405. the anger.

  1406. But we

  1407. thank you

  1408. that you

  1409. came down

  1410. and that

  1411. you went

  1412. through that

  1413. and even

  1414. more,

  1415. all the way

  1416. to the

  1417. cross.

  1418. For us,

  1419. so that we

  1420. could be

  1421. saved.

  1422. Thank you

  1423. that you

  1424. give us

  1425. eternal life

  1426. and that we

  1427. will never

  1428. die.

  1429. Those of us

  1430. who believe

  1431. in you and

  1432. keep your

  1433. word,

  1434. that's amazing.

  1435. And for all

  1436. of us here

  1437. this morning,

  1438. Lord,

  1439. we pray and

  1440. ask that you

  1441. would help

  1442. us not to

  1443. take your

  1444. word lightly,

  1445. but to

  1446. believe from

  1447. our hearts,

  1448. from the

  1449. depths of our

  1450. hearts,

  1451. everything you

  1452. said,
