  1. Well, we were talking earlier in the service about VBS,

  2. and last Sunday I shared a little of our vision for a weekly kids ministry

  3. here at our church in the fall,

  4. and urge you to think and pray about being involved with it.

  5. And this morning I want to just continue to direct our thoughts along some related lines.

  6. So as we go to the Word of God this morning, and maybe for the next week or two,

  7. we want to take some time to reflect on some of the moments that Jesus had with kids.

  8. Matthew and his gospel especially seem to take notice of this.

  9. We see several moments in which Jesus drew the attention of his disciples to kids,

  10. and so here we are as disciples of Jesus,

  11. and may he do the same thing in our hearts and minds as we listen to him this morning.

  12. We're in Matthew chapter 18.

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  13. Matthew chapter 18.

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  14. Starting in verse 1.

  15. At that time, the disciples came to Jesus and asked,

  16. Who then is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?

  17. Just to give you a quick sense of where Matthew's at in the story of Jesus,

  18. we're somewhere between the transfiguration and the triumphal entry.

  19. And Jesus is in and around the town of Capernaum,

  20. which is up in Galilee in that northern part of Israel.

  21. And speaking of children, Jesus has just healed a demon-possessed boy.

  22. And I don't know how many times I've read that story before,

  23. but for some reason this week as I read that again, it just got to me.

  24. How awful that is.

  25. That this evil spirit was messing with this boy, this child,

  26. trying to hurt him, trying to get him to kill himself.

  27. And wonderfully, Jesus cast the demon out of the boy with a word,

  28. set him free, he was changed, he was healed.

  29. And now we come to this little conversation in chapter 18, verse 1.

  30. Now this seems to have been an ongoing topic of conversation for the disciples.

  31. It's not too long after this that the mother of James and John will come to Jesus

  32. and ask if James and John can have the two most important seats

  33. at the right and left of Jesus' throne as he enters his kingdom.

  34. And then we see again, a little later, at the Passover supper,

  35. on the night of Jesus' betrayal,

  36. that the disciples were fighting amongst one another

  37. about which of them was the greatest.

  38. And we see glimpses all throughout the story of Jesus, really,

  39. in the ways that Jesus speaks to them,

  40. that this is an issue for the disciples.

  41. He encourages them not to be like the people of this world,

  42. not to desire greatness and power

  43. like the Pharisees or like the rulers of this world.

  44. So this question really does show what Jesus' disciples are most interested in.

  45. Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?

  46. Okay, maybe it's not us at the moment,

  47. but, you know, Jesus, give us some thoughts,

  48. give us some ideas.

  49. Help us figure out what the secret is to that greatness,

  50. and maybe we might even come to attain to that ourselves one day.

  51. And of course, even though Jesus has just told them five verses earlier

  52. about how things are going to go when he comes to Jerusalem,

  53. all indications are that the disciples are still thinking of Jesus riding into Jerusalem,

  54. setting up the kingdom here and now on earth,

  55. and maybe perhaps thinking, you know,

  56. what's my role going to be in this?

  57. What's my place going to be in this new order?

  58. I mean, I've been following Jesus since the beginning.

  59. I've been his loyal follower.

  60. Who then is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?

  61. Verse 2.

  62. Jesus called a little child to him

  63. and placed the child among them.

  64. Think about this. Picture this.

  65. Jesus is very deliberate here.

  66. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if he called the child by name

  67. because he'd already taken the time to know this child first.

  68. He very intentionally calls this child and puts him in the middle.

  69. Can you picture it?

  70. Twelve grown men or perhaps more, even more followers of Jesus,

  71. all standing around and a little child standing in the middle.

  72. And Jesus said,

  73. Truly, I tell you,

  74. unless you change and become like little children,

  75. you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

  76. Wow.

  77. I'm thinking at this point,

  78. the disciples are probably turning a little red in the face.

  79. I mean, what a statement.

  80. I'm just guessing.

  81. But maybe before all this,

  82. they're thinking,

  83. well, if anyone's going to have some honor,

  84. some prominence in this coming kingdom

  85. of which Jesus is going to be king,

  86. it's going to be us.

  87. I mean, look at us.

  88. We've been with Jesus right from the start.

  89. We're his best friends.

  90. Amongst all his followers,

  91. we've got seniority here.

  92. And then Jesus blows them away

  93. by telling them that as they are right now,

  94. they're not even going to enter

  95. the kingdom of heaven.

  96. They're not going to be a part of the kingdom.

  97. And this is one of the stronger forms of negation.

  98. It's literally,

  99. you will not ever enter the kingdom of heaven

  100. unless you all have a massive change of attitude,

  101. change of heart.

  102. The Greek word for change that's used here

  103. most often is translated as turn.

  104. It means to turn the other way,

  105. to turn around,

  106. to change direction.

  107. So we're not talking about just a little change

  108. or just a little attitude adjustment.

  109. We're talking about a big change,

  110. a complete change of mindset,

  111. a complete change of heart.

  112. You know, sometimes we might not like

  113. the many hard things that Jesus says to people,

  114. but at least Jesus is consistent.

  115. He doesn't play favorites.

  116. He points out the sin of the Pharisees

  117. and He points out the sin of the closest friends,

  118. His disciples.

  119. He tells the crowds to repent or perish

  120. in Luke 13

  121. and He says the very same thing in a sense

  122. right here to His own disciples,

  123. the 12, the ones that He's chosen.

  124. Unless you change,

  125. you will not ever enter the kingdom of heaven.

  126. Wow.

  127. Well, what kind of change must they make

  128. in order to enter the kingdom of heaven?

  129. Jesus says,

  130. unless you change

  131. and become like little children,

  132. like this little child

  133. now standing in the midst of you.

  134. I mean, who would have thought

  135. that this would happen?

  136. That little boy or that little girl

  137. just sitting on the side

  138. listening to all this,

  139. is suddenly in the very center

  140. and is the example

  141. of how the 12 will be saved.

  142. Here we are gearing up

  143. for another VBS this summer,

  144. gearing up for some kids' ministry this fall,

  145. and some of us,

  146. if we're honest,

  147. we might be thinking,

  148. well,

  149. I don't really care about the kids in Davidson.

  150. What do they have to do with me?

  151. Maybe if we're honest,

  152. we're like the disciples

  153. who probably didn't even notice them

  154. until they were making too much noise

  155. or interrupting.

  156. Or maybe we do notice them,

  157. maybe we do care about them,

  158. but maybe we think that this is all

  159. just about us teaching them,

  160. the kids.

  161. But could it be that Jesus actually

  162. has something to teach us

  163. as a church

  164. through them?

  165. Maybe not doctrine,

  166. but maybe about hard attitude

  167. kind of things.

  168. Maybe about faith,

  169. trust,

  170. worship.

  171. Out of the mouths of children

  172. you have called forth

  173. your praise,

  174. said the psalmist.

  175. I don't know about you,

  176. but I can hardly get over this.

  177. There's a lesson to be learned

  178. from this child

  179. standing in the middle

  180. of the circle here.

  181. And Jesus says,

  182. unless you learn it,

  183. you won't be in

  184. the kingdom of heaven.

  185. So this is not an optional lesson

  186. for spiritual overachievers.

  187. This is an essential lesson,

  188. a bare minimum lesson

  189. for all citizens of Christ's kingdom.

  190. So in what way

  191. do we need to change

  192. and become like little children?

  193. What is the change

  194. that Jesus longs to see

  195. in his disciples

  196. and in us?

  197. He goes on to explain

  198. verse 4.

  199. Therefore, he says,

  200. whoever takes

  201. the lowly position

  202. of this child

  203. is the greatest

  204. in the kingdom

  205. of heaven.

  206. Another more,

  207. perhaps more literal

  208. translation,

  209. whoever humbles himself

  210. like this child,

  211. he is the greatest

  212. in the kingdom

  213. of heaven.

  214. What do you mean

  215. by that, Jesus?

  216. This is a tough one.

  217. Some of us probably

  218. have the tendency

  219. to just assume

  220. we know what this means

  221. and move on.

  222. Oh, it just means

  223. I need to have faith

  224. like a child

  225. or be humble

  226. like a child

  227. and am I?

  228. I think so.

  229. I hope so.

  230. Next.

  231. In fact,

  232. that's probably

  233. how the disciples

  234. initially responded

  235. to what Jesus said.

  236. Obviously,

  237. they didn't get it

  238. because not too long

  239. after they were fighting

  240. about which of them

  241. was the greatest.

  242. So I want to encourage you

  243. not to assume

  244. that you necessarily

  245. know what Jesus

  246. means here

  247. or that you've

  248. already done this.

  249. Let's meditate

  250. on this together.

  251. Whoever humbles himself

  252. like this child,

  253. this one

  254. is the greatest

  255. in the kingdom

  256. of heaven.

  257. First,

  258. what is the action

  259. that Jesus

  260. is calling them to?

  261. Whoever

  262. humbles himself

  263. to humble

  264. yourself.

  265. He's essentially

  266. telling his disciples

  267. there's something

  268. you need to do.

  269. Something very important.

  270. you need to

  271. humble yourselves.

  272. It's not something

  273. that's going to happen

  274. automatically.

  275. It's something

  276. that you need

  277. to be intentional

  278. and be deliberate

  279. about doing.

  280. Humble himself.

  281. Humble yourself.

  282. He says to them.

  283. And as we reflect

  284. on this,

  285. you know,

  286. it comes to our attention

  287. that humbling ourselves

  288. is not mainly

  289. an outward action.

  290. It's not like,

  291. well,

  292. I'll just go find

  293. some humble-looking

  294. clothes

  295. and put them on

  296. and now I'm good

  297. to go.

  298. Many of the Pharisees

  299. were well-practiced

  300. at acting

  301. humble.

  302. But this is not

  303. what Jesus

  304. is calling them to.

  305. No,

  306. humbling yourselves,

  307. humbling ourselves

  308. has to do primarily

  309. with a change

  310. of attitude,

  311. a change of heart.

  312. Jesus is calling

  313. them right there

  314. to change the way

  315. that they think

  316. and feel

  317. about themselves

  318. and about other people.

  319. It's easy to put

  320. on sackcloth.

  321. It's easy to

  322. forgo shaving

  323. for a couple weeks.

  324. It's easy to let

  325. your hair grow long

  326. and become unkempt.

  327. But it's much harder

  328. to change the way

  329. you think about people

  330. and the way

  331. you see yourself,

  332. the way you feel

  333. about certain people

  334. or the way you feel

  335. about yourself

  336. in relation to them.

  337. Especially if,

  338. like these disciples,

  339. we're stuck

  340. in the habit

  341. and in the rut

  342. of seeing ourselves

  343. a certain way

  344. and others

  345. a certain way.

  346. And then we come

  347. to this question,

  348. what is it about

  349. a child

  350. that we must

  351. humble ourselves

  352. to be like?

  353. This is maybe

  354. the hardest question

  355. of all here.

  356. This is the whole lesson.

  357. The child in the middle

  358. is the object lesson.

  359. That Jesus is trying

  360. to teach us.

  361. What does it mean

  362. to humble ourselves

  363. like this child?

  364. Maybe you know the answer.

  365. I know I've heard

  366. this passage

  367. and read it

  368. lots of times before.

  369. I've heard a few

  370. different answers.

  371. You know,

  372. but when you come up here

  373. to preach,

  374. you want to know for sure,

  375. what does Jesus mean

  376. by this?

  377. And there are

  378. a couple different ways

  379. that you could take

  380. Jesus' words here.

  381. some take this

  382. to suggest

  383. that this is all

  384. about the innocence

  385. of children,

  386. the purity of children,

  387. about the simple

  388. faith or trust

  389. of a child.

  390. I'm not so sure

  391. about that.

  392. As I look at it,

  393. Jesus is not talking

  394. so much about faith

  395. or purity

  396. or innocence,

  397. but about humility,

  398. about humbling

  399. yourself.

  400. Does Jesus mean

  401. that we should

  402. humble ourselves

  403. like this particular

  404. child is humble?

  405. Like is this

  406. specific child

  407. that he called out

  408. a shining example

  409. of humility

  410. among all the rest?

  411. I'm not sure

  412. about that either.

  413. In verse 3,

  414. he says to all of them

  415. that they need to change

  416. and become like

  417. children, plural.

  418. So this is,

  419. to me it seems,

  420. about,

  421. there's something

  422. about children

  423. in general

  424. that we need

  425. to see,

  426. that Jesus

  427. wants us to see.

  428. Does Jesus mean

  429. that we should

  430. begin to think

  431. of ourselves

  432. as having

  433. the same importance

  434. in society

  435. as a child has?

  436. That's kind of

  437. what my Bible

  438. translation

  439. maybe suggests.

  440. Whoever takes

  441. the lowly position

  442. of this child

  443. is the greatest

  444. in the kingdom

  445. of heaven.

  446. The idea here

  447. would be that

  448. when it comes

  449. to measuring

  450. greatness

  451. in our world,

  452. children are

  453. always considered

  454. to be at

  455. the very bottom.

  456. They haven't

  457. accomplished

  458. anything.

  459. They haven't

  460. contributed

  461. meaningfully

  462. to their

  463. community

  464. at all

  465. yet.

  466. In fact,

  467. they're totally

  468. dependent on

  469. others just

  470. to live.

  471. So if this

  472. is what Jesus

  473. means,

  474. perhaps he's

  475. calling his

  476. disciples to

  477. think of

  478. themselves as

  479. being like

  480. that,

  481. as being of

  482. little importance

  483. in the kingdom

  484. because they've

  485. contributed very

  486. little,

  487. because they're

  488. totally dependent

  489. on the mercy

  490. of God,

  491. even to be

  492. citizens,

  493. that's a good

  494. possibility.

  495. Or does Jesus

  496. mean that we

  497. should humble

  498. ourselves

  499. and have the

  500. same general

  501. attitude that

  502. young children

  503. have?

  504. this is

  505. probably

  506. what I

  507. think,

  508. another good

  509. possibility.

  510. It seems to

  511. me that there's

  512. a big contrast

  513. in attitudes

  514. here.

  515. There's the

  516. disciples and

  517. there's the

  518. kids.

  519. Look at

  520. verse 5.

  521. Jesus says

  522. there,

  523. whoever

  524. welcomes

  525. one such

  526. child in

  527. my name

  528. welcomes

  529. me.

  530. I got

  531. thinking about

  532. this.

  533. Why would

  534. Jesus say

  535. that to

  536. his

  537. disciples?

  538. Could it

  539. be that the

  540. disciples have

  541. not been all

  542. that welcoming

  543. to the

  544. children of

  545. Capernaum?

  546. Could it

  547. be that they've

  548. not been

  549. warm to

  550. them or

  551. really taken

  552. an interest

  553. in them?

  554. Could it

  555. be that they

  556. think that

  557. this whole

  558. messianic

  559. movement that

  560. Jesus is

  561. leading would

  562. be better

  563. served by

  564. some competent

  565. adults who

  566. can really

  567. accomplish some

  568. great things

  569. and make

  570. this kingdom

  571. truly great?

  572. Maybe they're

  573. looking at

  574. everyone who

  575. comes along

  576. through that

  577. lens.

  578. I don't know.

  579. They see

  580. Jesus talking

  581. to Nicodemus.

  582. Oh,

  583. Nicodemus,

  584. he's a member

  585. of the ruling

  586. council.

  587. If he becomes

  588. a follower of

  589. Jesus,

  590. just think of

  591. where this

  592. kingdom's going

  593. to go.

  594. But that

  595. crippled man

  596. over there

  597. that Jesus

  598. just healed,

  599. well,

  600. he's probably

  601. not going to

  602. do much for

  603. the cause.

  604. but children

  605. don't seem to

  606. see the world

  607. that way,

  608. do they?

  609. They see

  610. people oftentimes

  611. as people,

  612. especially

  613. young children.

  614. I often

  615. smile at my

  616. own kids.

  617. Sometimes I'll

  618. see a stranger

  619. walking by and

  620. just not think

  621. to say hello

  622. or to greet

  623. them and the

  624. first thing

  625. they,

  626. hi,

  627. how's your

  628. day today?

  629. In fact,

  630. even the

  631. stranger might

  632. be surprised

  633. at just how

  634. unexpectedly

  635. kind and

  636. welcoming

  637. the child

  638. is.

  639. Children,

  640. they do

  641. notice the

  642. difference in

  643. people's

  644. circumstances.

  645. They see

  646. things like

  647. disabilities.

  648. They see

  649. the color

  650. of people's

  651. skin.

  652. They see

  653. the way

  654. that they're

  655. dressed.

  656. But amazingly,

  657. for kids,

  658. it doesn't

  659. automatically

  660. translate into

  661. thinking that

  662. they're somehow

  663. better than

  664. that person

  665. or looking

  666. down on

  667. them.

  668. A child is

  669. far more

  670. likely to

  671. have compassion

  672. on the man

  673. with the

  674. broken legs

  675. who's sitting

  676. and begging

  677. on the

  678. street than

  679. their mom

  680. or their

  681. dad.

  682. A child

  683. would generally

  684. talk to

  685. and think

  686. the same

  687. of the

  688. prime minister

  689. or of the

  690. next door

  691. neighbor.

  692. They would

  693. talk to

  694. an accomplished

  695. businessman

  696. the same

  697. as they

  698. would talk

  699. to the

  700. college

  701. dropout.

  702. They're

  703. easily

  704. welcoming

  705. to all

  706. kinds of

  707. people who

  708. are different

  709. than them.

  710. Perhaps

  711. Jesus wants

  712. his disciples,

  713. wants us,

  714. to get

  715. something of

  716. that kind

  717. of mindset

  718. towards others.

  719. To stop

  720. thinking of

  721. ourselves as

  722. the most

  723. important,

  724. as the

  725. greatest,

  726. as wiser

  727. than so

  728. and so

  729. and humble

  730. ourselves

  731. and take

  732. up that

  733. mindset that

  734. a child

  735. has toward

  736. people all

  737. around.

  738. Now it

  739. doesn't mean

  740. that children

  741. don't wrestle

  742. with pride.

  743. I think we

  744. know that

  745. they do.

  746. Even early

  747. on they can

  748. have that

  749. mentality of

  750. well I know

  751. better than

  752. mom or dad

  753. or I

  754. want to be

  755. first.

  756. The world

  757. revolves around

  758. me.

  759. We're all

  760. sinners.

  761. Sin affects

  762. all of us

  763. even from the

  764. time that

  765. we're

  766. little.

  767. But there's

  768. something about

  769. a child's

  770. way of

  771. looking at

  772. other people

  773. and even

  774. themselves

  775. that's just

  776. lowly.

  777. It's just

  778. humble.

  779. They don't

  780. assume things

  781. about other

  782. people as

  783. much.

  784. And unlike

  785. us adults

  786. they actually

  787. know that

  788. they don't

  789. have all

  790. the answers.

  791. And we

  792. know it

  793. because they

  794. ask questions

  795. all the

  796. time.

  797. It's such

  798. a wonderful

  799. and refreshing

  800. thing about

  801. kids.

  802. Whoever

  803. humbles

  804. himself like

  805. this child

  806. is the

  807. greatest in

  808. the kingdom

  809. of heaven.

  810. If we're

  811. listening

  812. closely

  813. Jesus is

  814. redefining

  815. greatness

  816. at least

  817. for his

  818. kingdom.

  819. And it's

  820. the total

  821. opposite of

  822. what we

  823. might expect.

  824. He says

  825. the greatest

  826. in the

  827. kingdom of

  828. heaven is

  829. the one

  830. who

  831. willingly

  832. deliberately

  833. humbles

  834. himself.

  835. Takes

  836. up the

  837. lowliest

  838. of places.

  839. And I

  840. think we

  841. need to be

  842. careful here.

  843. Jesus is

  844. not telling

  845. us to

  846. pretend to

  847. be humble.

  848. He's not

  849. telling us to

  850. pretend to be

  851. like children.

  852. Neither is he

  853. telling us to

  854. pretend that

  855. we're unskilled

  856. or ungifted

  857. or that we're

  858. not good at

  859. certain things.

  860. It's not

  861. false humility

  862. that Jesus

  863. is looking

  864. for.

  865. So what is

  866. Jesus looking

  867. for?

  868. As I got

  869. thinking about

  870. this I

  871. realized Jesus

  872. is himself

  873. the best

  874. example of

  875. what he's

  876. looking for

  877. in his

  878. disciples.

  879. Here he

  880. is, God's

  881. chosen king.

  882. And what's

  883. he doing?

  884. He's not

  885. sitting on

  886. a throne.

  887. He's among

  888. his people

  889. loving them,

  890. caring for

  891. them,

  892. serving them,

  893. washing their

  894. crusty feet.

  895. He didn't

  896. come to be

  897. served by

  898. them.

  899. He came

  900. to serve

  901. them.

  902. He didn't

  903. come so that

  904. all his

  905. citizens could

  906. lay down

  907. their lives

  908. for him

  909. as their

  910. great king

  911. but so that

  912. he could lay

  913. down his

  914. life for

  915. them.

  916. In our

  917. world it's

  918. the other

  919. way around.

  920. The subjects

  921. give their

  922. lives for

  923. the king.

  924. The body

  925. guards of

  926. the president

  927. jump in

  928. front of

  929. the president

  930. to take

  931. the bullet

  932. for the

  933. president

  934. and protect

  935. him.

  936. But in

  937. the kingdom

  938. of heaven

  939. the king

  940. jumps off

  941. his throne

  942. to take

  943. the bullet

  944. for his

  945. citizens,

  946. for his

  947. people.

  948. that is

  949. greatness.

  950. A king

  951. who will

  952. get off

  953. his throne

  954. and literally

  955. actually

  956. physically

  957. become a

  958. child.

  959. Give up

  960. his rights

  961. and privileges

  962. and even

  963. his very

  964. life to

  965. rescue an

  966. unworthy

  967. sinner like

  968. me.

  969. that's

  970. greatness.

  971. Verse 5

  972. Jesus says

  973. whoever

  974. welcomes

  975. one such

  976. child like

  977. this in the

  978. midst of you

  979. guys.

  980. Whoever

  981. welcomes one

  982. such child in

  983. my name

  984. welcomes me.

  985. in these

  986. words I can

  987. almost hear

  988. Jesus saying

  989. to his

  990. disciples,

  991. do you

  992. want to

  993. serve me?

  994. Do you

  995. want to

  996. help the

  997. cause of

  998. my kingdom?

  999. Do you

  1000. want to

  1001. welcome me

  1002. as your

  1003. Messiah,

  1004. as your

  1005. king?

  1006. If that's

  1007. what you

  1008. want to

  1009. do,

  1010. then you

  1011. can start

  1012. by welcoming

  1013. one of

  1014. these little

  1015. children here.

  1016. That's your

  1017. assignment.

  1018. I can

  1019. only wonder

  1020. what Peter

  1021. and James

  1022. and John

  1023. were thinking

  1024. as he said

  1025. this.

  1026. I don't

  1027. know.

  1028. I wouldn't

  1029. be surprised

  1030. though if

  1031. moments before

  1032. this conversation

  1033. they were

  1034. already dividing

  1035. up the land

  1036. of Israel

  1037. into regions

  1038. or tribes

  1039. or districts

  1040. and thinking

  1041. which one am

  1042. I going to

  1043. be the

  1044. governor of

  1045. when Jesus

  1046. takes his

  1047. seat on the

  1048. throne?

  1049. What's my

  1050. job going to

  1051. be here?

  1052. What's my

  1053. role?

  1054. And Jesus

  1055. says,

  1056. unless you

  1057. have a

  1058. massive

  1059. change

  1060. of attitude

  1061. you won't

  1062. even enter

  1063. my kingdom.

  1064. You want

  1065. to do

  1066. something

  1067. great for

  1068. me?

  1069. Start

  1070. by welcoming

  1071. the children

  1072. in my

  1073. name.

  1074. In fact

  1075. you could

  1076. almost

  1077. summarize

  1078. this whole

  1079. conversation

  1080. like this.

  1081. Jesus

  1082. who is the

  1083. greatest

  1084. in the

  1085. kingdom

  1086. of heaven?

  1087. Answer

  1088. humble

  1089. yourselves

  1090. and welcome

  1091. the children

  1092. or you

  1093. won't even

  1094. enter it.

  1095. What a

  1096. word.

  1097. What a

  1098. moment here

  1099. with Jesus.

  1100. Are you

  1101. feeling convicted?

  1102. I'm feeling

  1103. convicted.

  1104. I've been

  1105. feeling convicted

  1106. all through

  1107. my preparation

  1108. here.

  1109. What do we

  1110. do with

  1111. this?

  1112. first of

  1113. all I

  1114. think we

  1115. need to

  1116. ask

  1117. ourselves

  1118. the

  1119. question

  1120. the

  1121. disciples

  1122. should

  1123. be

  1124. asking

  1125. themselves

  1126. in what

  1127. way do

  1128. I need

  1129. to humble

  1130. myself?

  1131. And

  1132. before we

  1133. get to

  1134. all the

  1135. other

  1136. aspects of

  1137. life I

  1138. think the

  1139. first and

  1140. most important

  1141. question is

  1142. have you

  1143. humbled

  1144. yourself

  1145. before

  1146. God?

  1147. have you

  1148. come to

  1149. that place

  1150. in your

  1151. heart where

  1152. you admit

  1153. that you

  1154. really don't

  1155. have anything

  1156. to offer

  1157. him?

  1158. Where you

  1159. admit that

  1160. yes I

  1161. am in

  1162. need of

  1163. you Jesus

  1164. I'm in

  1165. need of

  1166. your

  1167. forgiveness

  1168. where you

  1169. admit to

  1170. him that

  1171. you're a

  1172. sinner.

  1173. this is

  1174. the first

  1175. and most

  1176. important

  1177. way that

  1178. we all

  1179. need to

  1180. humble

  1181. ourselves

  1182. and like

  1183. children

  1184. just come

  1185. to him

  1186. and say

  1187. father I've

  1188. blown it

  1189. I'm sorry

  1190. I haven't

  1191. listened to

  1192. you I'm

  1193. sorry I

  1194. haven't

  1195. treated you

  1196. the way

  1197. that I

  1198. should

  1199. would you

  1200. forgive me?

  1201. We all

  1202. have to

  1203. come to

  1204. this moment

  1205. with God

  1206. this humble

  1207. moment in

  1208. order to

  1209. enter the

  1210. kingdom of

  1211. heaven and

  1212. the good

  1213. news is

  1214. that God

  1215. is rich

  1216. in mercy

  1217. and he

  1218. forgives

  1219. and if

  1220. you've done

  1221. that then I

  1222. invite you to

  1223. consider another

  1224. simple way

  1225. another practical

  1226. simple way to

  1227. humble yourself

  1228. pride is an

  1229. elusive thing

  1230. it's something

  1231. that's very

  1232. difficult to

  1233. see in your

  1234. own life

  1235. because it

  1236. blinds you

  1237. to its own

  1238. presence

  1239. and so this

  1240. morning I

  1241. want to

  1242. simply invite

  1243. you to

  1244. ask the

  1245. Lord Jesus

  1246. to reveal

  1247. to you

  1248. Lord are

  1249. there any

  1250. proud

  1251. thoughts

  1252. proud

  1253. attitudes

  1254. in my

  1255. heart

  1256. that I

  1257. have

  1258. convict me

  1259. show me

  1260. what they

  1261. are

  1262. show me

  1263. the ways

  1264. you want

  1265. me to

  1266. change

  1267. how I'm

  1268. thinking

  1269. and as

  1270. you do

  1271. maybe it's

  1272. helpful to

  1273. start thinking

  1274. about some

  1275. different people

  1276. in your

  1277. life

  1278. you can start

  1279. with your

  1280. family

  1281. how do you

  1282. think about

  1283. them in

  1284. relation to

  1285. yourself

  1286. how about

  1287. your friends

  1288. how about

  1289. your co-workers

  1290. how about

  1291. your neighbors

  1292. how about

  1293. one another

  1294. here in the

  1295. church

  1296. from there

  1297. you might

  1298. want to

  1299. consider

  1300. Lord what

  1301. what are

  1302. some lowly

  1303. some humble

  1304. things that

  1305. that you

  1306. would have

  1307. me do

  1308. whether it's

  1309. at home

  1310. with your

  1311. family or in

  1312. the church

  1313. or in your

  1314. community

  1315. what are

  1316. some of

  1317. those thankless

  1318. tasks and

  1319. jobs that

  1320. God has

  1321. maybe put

  1322. before you

  1323. to do

  1324. maybe it's

  1325. taking out

  1326. the garbage

  1327. at home

  1328. maybe it's

  1329. cleaning the

  1330. church

  1331. maybe it's

  1332. visiting with

  1333. someone who's

  1334. shut in or

  1335. who's an

  1336. outcast in

  1337. the community

  1338. maybe it's

  1339. even

  1340. serving as

  1341. the secretary

  1342. on a board

  1343. of the library

  1344. or the school

  1345. community council

  1346. has pride

  1347. or a

  1348. worldly view

  1349. of greatness

  1350. been keeping

  1351. you from

  1352. humbly

  1353. serving the

  1354. least of

  1355. these or

  1356. serving in

  1357. one of

  1358. these lowly

  1359. ways

  1360. these are

  1361. just some

  1362. questions to

  1363. get the

  1364. prayers rolling

  1365. Jesus said

  1366. whoever welcomes

  1367. one such

  1368. child in my

  1369. name

  1370. welcomes me

  1371. and amazingly

  1372. he applied

  1373. this rebuke

  1374. this command

  1375. specifically to

  1376. welcoming

  1377. children in

  1378. his name

  1379. something that

  1380. the disciples

  1381. felt was

  1382. maybe not

  1383. that important

  1384. but something

  1385. that Jesus

  1386. felt was

  1387. very important

  1388. and so we

  1389. can think about

  1390. this even as

  1391. we're gearing up

  1392. for VBS this

  1393. summer and

  1394. kids ministry

  1395. this fall

  1396. are we willing

  1397. to do that

  1398. to welcome

  1399. to serve

  1400. some of the

  1401. kids of our

  1402. community

  1403. in Jesus

  1404. name

  1405. whoever welcomes

  1406. one such

  1407. child

  1408. in my name

  1409. welcomes me

  1410. said Jesus

  1411. let's pray

  1412. Lord in

  1413. these moments

  1414. would you

  1415. speak to

  1416. our hearts

  1417. and truthfully

  1418. Lord these

  1419. are the kinds

  1420. of conversations

  1421. that we need

  1422. to have with

  1423. you that

  1424. can happen

  1425. in just a

  1426. couple minutes

  1427. so please

  1428. would you

  1429. speak to us

  1430. all throughout

  1431. the week

  1432. would you

  1433. show us

  1434. each one of

  1435. us how we

  1436. need to

  1437. humble

  1438. ourselves

  1439. would you

  1440. forgive us

  1441. for the pride

  1442. that we've

  1443. had in our

  1444. hearts

  1445. for those

  1446. ways in which

  1447. we've thought

  1448. that we are

  1449. better than

  1450. others

  1451. that we see

  1452. more clearly

  1453. that we're

  1454. wiser than

  1455. others

  1456. that we

  1457. deserve a

  1458. better kind

  1459. of service

  1460. or responsibility

  1461. than others

  1462. Lord even

  1463. as these

  1464. we plan to

  1465. have these

  1466. kids come

  1467. in the fall

  1468. and later

  1469. this summer

  1470. we pray

  1471. and ask

  1472. would you

  1473. use them

  1474. to teach

  1475. us this

  1476. very lesson

  1477. that you

  1478. taught to

  1479. your disciples

  1480. that day

  1481. and would you

  1482. give us ears

  1483. and hearts

  1484. to hear it

  1485. we ask this

  1486. in your name

  1487. Jesus

  1488. amen
