  1. On Friday evening, we had the youth here, and we had a great discussion with them.

  2. We kind of opened it up to them, Ryan and I were there, to ask whatever questions they wanted about God, faith, the Bible.

  3. And we talked about all sorts of things, from angels, to whether there's life on other planets, to how God created the world.

  4. And one of the things that they had questions about was basically the Bible in general.

  5. What exactly is in this book?

  6. And as we talked about it, they were quite surprised to hear about the variety of different things in the Bible.

  7. And it got me thinking, you know, the Bible is, you know, it's a big book.

  8. Of course, I got the extra wide margin, so it's not actually this big, most of yours.

  9. But it's a pretty large collection of writings.

  10. And summing it all up is not the easiest thing.

  11. What would you tell a child who asks you, what's the Bible about?

  12. What would you say to them?

  13. Well, we might go into some of the details about how God created the world, and then the fall of man, and the flood, and the story of Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and then the story of the people of Israel, and then to Jesus.

  14. And before you know it, you realize that this book actually covers a lot.

  15. Even just the first five books of the Bible cover several thousand years of world history.

  16. But what's this big story that traces all through the ages really all about?

  17. I was reminded again this week of just how simple it could be to answer a question like this, as I was reading what Jesus said on one particular occasion.

  18. If you have your Bible with you, open it up to the Gospel of Mark, chapter 12.

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  19. The Gospel of Mark, chapter 12.

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  20. Jesus is in Jerusalem.

  21. It's the week before his death and resurrection.

  22. He's been teaching at the temple courts each day.

  23. And we pick up the story in verse 28.

  24. One of the teachers of the law came and heard Jesus debating with the Sadducees.

  25. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him,

  26. Of all the commandments, which is the most important?

  27. The most important one, answered Jesus, is this.

  28. Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.

  29. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.

  30. The second is this.

  31. Love your neighbor as yourself.

  32. There is no commandment greater than these.

  33. Of all the commandments, which is the most important?

  34. Good question.

  35. We all know that the Bible is not just a story of what has happened,

  36. but that all throughout the Bible we're being taught and told about what God really wants from us.

  37. And as we think of those first few books of the Bible,

  38. Genesis and Exodus and Leviticus and Deuteronomy,

  39. this is a big part of the story.

  40. What does God really want from us?

  41. This is what Adam and Eve began to discover in the garden.

  42. It's what Abraham and his children and his grandchildren began to discover as God revealed himself to them.

  43. It's what the children of Israel began to discover as God gave them his ten commandments and the law.

  44. What does God really want from me?

  45. For some people today, when they think of the Bible, the first thing that comes to mind is that it's a big book of rules.

  46. A big book of do this and don't do that.

  47. And so this question is a great question.

  48. Of all the commandments, which is the most important?

  49. What is it that God most deeply wants from us?

  50. Of all the things that God has commanded people to do over the centuries,

  51. over thousands of years of history,

  52. what's the one thing that matters most to God?

  53. The one thing he wants most from you and from me?

  54. Does Jesus' answer to this question surprise you?

  55. It surprises me.

  56. I've been a Christian since my youth, and again this week it surprised me to read this answer.

  57. It's all too easy to fall into a mindset where we think that what God wants most from me is to stop sinning

  58. and to live a holy life,

  59. or to stop being selfish,

  60. or to make progress with my anger issue,

  61. or to just stop worrying about things and to trust him more,

  62. or to just get better at doing what he says,

  63. or we might think that what he wants most of us is simply to serve him

  64. and to do the work of his kingdom

  65. with diligence and get things done for him.

  66. And so we wait with bated breath for Jesus to tell us the answer.

  67. Of all the commandments, which is the most important?

  68. Which is the one thing that he wants most from you and from me?

  69. And what Jesus says is surprisingly sweet.

  70. The most important one, answer Jesus, is this.

  71. Love the Lord your God with all your heart

  72. and with all your soul

  73. and with all your mind

  74. and with all your strength.

  75. Love.

  76. Hold on a minute.

  77. I mean, I can't have read that right.

  78. The most important one is this.

  79. Go and make disciples of all nations.

  80. No.

  81. The most important one must be this.

  82. Be holy as I am holy.

  83. No.

  84. The most important one is this.

  85. Fear God.

  86. No.

  87. The most important one is this.

  88. Repent of your sins.

  89. No.

  90. Now, all these are important.

  91. Yes, they're all commands that come from Scripture.

  92. But the most important, says Jesus, is simply,

  93. love Yahweh, your God,

  94. with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength.

  95. With everything you've got.

  96. Love Him.

  97. Isn't that surprisingly sweet?

  98. The thing that God wants most from you and me

  99. is a relationship characterized by love.

  100. This is what the whole Bible is about.

  101. From cover to cover.

  102. It's why He made us in the beginning.

  103. It's why He gave us a beautiful place to live,

  104. perfectly suited to our needs and delights.

  105. It's what we turned our back on that day in the garden

  106. when we broke faith with Him.

  107. And it's what God has been working to restore

  108. through the ages between Him and us.

  109. A love relationship.

  110. It's why He sent Jesus, His Son, into the world.

  111. It's why Jesus came to suffer and die on the cross.

  112. And it's what Jesus has promised to bring about

  113. in its fullness when He returns.

  114. A love relationship with Him.

  115. With God.

  116. Forever.

  117. Let me read some of the words at the end of the story.

  118. Revelation chapter 21.

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  119. This is John talking about the vision that he had from Jesus.

  120. He said,

  121. Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth.

  122. For the first heaven and the first earth had passed away

  123. and there was no longer any sea.

  124. I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem,

  125. coming down out of heaven from God,

  126. prepared as a bride,

  127. beautifully dressed for her husband.

  128. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,

  129. Look!

  130. God's dwelling place is now among the people

  131. and He will dwell with them.

  132. They will be His people

  133. and God Himself will be with them

  134. and be their God.

  135. He will wipe every tear from their eyes.

  136. There will be no more death

  137. or mourning

  138. or crying

  139. or pain

  140. for the old order of things has passed away.

  141. He who was seated on the throne said,

  142. I am making everything new.

  143. I love those words.

  144. A love relationship.

  145. And I will wipe every tear from your eyes

  146. and fix all the brokenness and suffering

  147. and pain in this life kind of relationship.

  148. These words describe God's great love for His people.

  149. And sometimes we lose sight of this

  150. in the busyness of life, don't we?

  151. that this is what it's all about.

  152. It's all too easy for our relationship with God

  153. to become in our minds

  154. about what we must do for God.

  155. But beneath all that,

  156. what God wants most from us

  157. is love.

  158. Sweet, beautiful relationship.

  159. Friendship.

  160. Let's talk briefly about the kind of love

  161. that God desires from us.

  162. Jesus said,

  163. Love the Lord your God

  164. with all your heart

  165. and with all your soul

  166. and with all your mind

  167. and with all your strength.

  168. Those are some powerful descriptions.

  169. They speak of a passionate love.

  170. You might hear a few of these words

  171. spoken between two people in love today.

  172. I love you with all my heart.

  173. From the depths of my being

  174. with my deepest of feelings.

  175. But then it goes beyond that

  176. and with all your soul.

  177. From the very deepest center

  178. and essence of who I am.

  179. And then it goes one step further.

  180. And with all your mind.

  181. If the whole heart and soul

  182. didn't already capture it all,

  183. he includes all the mind

  184. where all of my inward thoughts

  185. are caught up in loving God.

  186. The closest thing that I

  187. even can compare this to

  188. is that special relationship

  189. between a man and a woman.

  190. I still remember

  191. when I was first dating Jennifer

  192. how naturally

  193. all my thoughts were about her.

  194. Couldn't get her out of my mind.

  195. I was just thinking about her

  196. all the time.

  197. I was thinking about

  198. our last conversation.

  199. I was thinking about

  200. what she enjoyed.

  201. I was thinking about

  202. what we might do

  203. on our next date

  204. and when we might be able

  205. to do that.

  206. I used to tell her

  207. I couldn't sleep at night

  208. because the reality

  209. of our relationship

  210. was better than my dreams.

  211. I was thinking about her

  212. as I lay on my bed.

  213. This is the kind of love

  214. that God desires from us

  215. where we love him

  216. with all our thoughts,

  217. our thinking,

  218. our planning,

  219. our intentionality.

  220. And finally,

  221. God desires for us

  222. to love him

  223. with all of our strength.

  224. So not just a feeling love

  225. or a passion love

  226. but also a doing love.

  227. We misunderstand love

  228. if we think of it

  229. only as a feeling.

  230. It is a feeling

  231. but it's also an action.

  232. It's something

  233. that we do

  234. to one another.

  235. It is felt

  236. but it's also demonstrated.

  237. And it's not that we

  238. must prove our love

  239. through action.

  240. It's that the natural fruit

  241. of love

  242. is action.

  243. Just like if you love

  244. your son or your daughter

  245. and you see them in need.

  246. You want to act.

  247. You act

  248. because you love them.

  249. You help them out.

  250. Or if you have a friend

  251. and you know

  252. it's their birthday coming up.

  253. You do something special

  254. for them.

  255. You give of your time

  256. and your energy

  257. and your strength.

  258. You go get a gift for them

  259. or a card for them.

  260. Action.

  261. John in his letter

  262. says it so well.

  263. 1 John 3.18

  264. He says

  265. Dear children

  266. let us not love

  267. with words

  268. or tongue

  269. but with actions

  270. and in truth.

  271. Action.

  272. Loving someone

  273. is not just a feeling.

  274. It's not just something

  275. we say to them.

  276. It's something we do

  277. to them

  278. and for them.

  279. And love requires

  280. strength.

  281. Serving your kids.

  282. Serving your spouse.

  283. Serving each other

  284. in the church.

  285. Serving your neighbor

  286. requires strength.

  287. It requires energy.

  288. And so we shouldn't

  289. be surprised

  290. when Jesus says

  291. that God desires

  292. for us to love him

  293. with all our strength.

  294. It's a full

  295. expressed kind of

  296. love that God

  297. desires from us.

  298. He is our God

  299. and we love him

  300. so we obey him.

  301. He's our king

  302. and we love him

  303. so we serve him

  304. joyfully

  305. from the heart

  306. doing the things

  307. that please him.

  308. all of these

  309. things together

  310. describe the kind

  311. of love

  312. that God desires

  313. from you and me.

  314. A passionate love.

  315. A total devotion

  316. kind of love.

  317. An all of me

  318. and all my life

  319. is yours

  320. kind of love.

  321. Not a fake love.

  322. Not a

  323. well it's my duty

  324. to love you

  325. kind of love

  326. but a sincere

  327. and genuine

  328. love from the heart.

  329. Now we might

  330. read these words

  331. and tremble.

  332. We might think

  333. to ourselves

  334. well this kind

  335. of love

  336. is so far

  337. beyond

  338. what I could

  339. possibly give

  340. to God.

  341. I fail to love

  342. him with all my

  343. heart and soul

  344. and mind

  345. and strength

  346. all the time.

  347. In fact I wonder

  348. if I've ever

  349. loved anyone

  350. but myself

  351. in that way.

  352. this may feel

  353. heavy

  354. and burdensome

  355. to you.

  356. Thou shalt not

  357. steal.

  358. I can do that

  359. but love

  360. the Lord

  361. your God

  362. with all your

  363. heart, soul,

  364. mind and strength.

  365. That's impossible.

  366. Maybe hearing

  367. Jesus' answer

  368. just makes you

  369. feel guiltier

  370. of sin

  371. because you know

  372. that God

  373. is worthy

  374. of this kind

  375. of love

  376. from you

  377. but at the same

  378. time you just

  379. feel powerless

  380. to give it to him.

  381. Let me offer you

  382. a few words

  383. of encouragement

  384. this morning.

  385. Regardless of

  386. whether we can

  387. love God

  388. like this

  389. isn't it sweet

  390. and beautiful

  391. and wonderful

  392. that God

  393. the creator

  394. desires this

  395. kind of relationship

  396. with us.

  397. That he created

  398. us for this

  399. kind of a love

  400. relationship

  401. with him

  402. and that out of

  403. everything he wants

  404. from us

  405. this is what

  406. he desires most.

  407. isn't that sweet?

  408. That alone

  409. says so much

  410. about the kind

  411. of God

  412. that he is.

  413. He is a warm

  414. and personal

  415. and affectionate

  416. God.

  417. So even if we

  418. fail to love

  419. God like this

  420. it still describes

  421. no less

  422. the perfect

  423. all-encompassing

  424. love relationship

  425. that God

  426. wants to have

  427. with us

  428. and that's good

  429. news.

  430. Here's my second

  431. word of encouragement.

  432. God knows

  433. very well

  434. that we have

  435. all failed

  436. to love him

  437. like this.

  438. He knows

  439. that even now

  440. those of us

  441. who do love him

  442. and believe in him

  443. will continue

  444. to fall short

  445. of his glory

  446. and continue

  447. to fall short

  448. of loving him

  449. like this

  450. the way that

  451. he's worthy of

  452. and it's not

  453. to say that

  454. we shouldn't

  455. intentionally

  456. make an effort

  457. to love him

  458. like that

  459. we should

  460. but God

  461. knows that

  462. we are all

  463. bent

  464. and broken

  465. and that

  466. sin and

  467. selfishness

  468. continues to

  469. be present

  470. in all of us

  471. and that's

  472. the whole

  473. reason why

  474. God sent

  475. Jesus

  476. into the

  477. world

  478. to save

  479. us.

  480. None of us

  481. can come

  482. even close

  483. to loving

  484. God as we

  485. should

  486. and we

  487. could never

  488. have this

  489. kind of

  490. relationship

  491. with God

  492. unless

  493. God did

  494. something

  495. to fix

  496. that brokenness

  497. that bentness

  498. inside of us

  499. I love the way

  500. that John

  501. says it

  502. it's the verse

  503. that we have

  504. outside on the

  505. wall

  506. 1st John 4

    John 4:10

  507. verse 10

  508. this is love

  509. not that we

  510. loved God

  511. but that he

  512. loved us

  513. and sent his

  514. son

  515. as an atoning

  516. sacrifice

  517. for our sins

  518. this is how

  519. God showed

  520. his love

  521. among us

  522. he sent his

  523. one and only

  524. son

  525. into the

  526. world

  527. that we

  528. might live

  529. through him

  530. this is the

  531. good news

  532. of Jesus

  533. not that we

  534. loved God

  535. not that we

  536. must become

  537. good enough

  538. to have

  539. relationship

  540. with him

  541. but that

  542. God loved

  543. us

  544. even while

  545. we were

  546. still quite

  547. unloving

  548. and unlovely

  549. Romans 5

  550. familiar

  551. verse

  552. verse

  553. at just

  554. the right

  555. time

  556. says Paul

  557. when we

  558. were still

  559. powerless

  560. Christ died

  561. for the

  562. ungodly

  563. very rarely

  564. will anyone

  565. die

  566. even for a

  567. righteous

  568. person

  569. though for a

  570. good person

  571. someone might

  572. possibly dare

  573. to die

  574. but God

  575. demonstrates

  576. his own

  577. love for

  578. us

  579. in this

  580. while we

  581. were still

  582. sinners

  583. Christ died

  584. for us

  585. even though

  586. we've all

  587. failed to

  588. love God

  589. as we

  590. should

  591. God has

  592. loved us

  593. so much

  594. so deeply

  595. he's done

  596. something

  597. truly amazing

  598. to fix the

  599. problem

  600. to fix

  601. what's broken

  602. between us

  603. and him

  604. and to

  605. make this

  606. relationship

  607. that he's

  608. describing

  609. possible for

  610. us

  611. loving God

  612. like Jesus

  613. said

  614. that we

  615. should

  616. really is

  617. impossible

  618. for sinners

  619. like you

  620. and me

  621. there's truly

  622. only one

  623. person who

  624. ever loved

  625. God this

  626. way

  627. with all

  628. his heart

  629. and soul

  630. and mind

  631. and strength

  632. all the

  633. time

  634. and that's

  635. Jesus

  636. he was not

  637. bent like

  638. we are

  639. he was in

  640. a sinner

  641. like we

  642. are

  643. and so if

  644. we want to

  645. see what it

  646. looks like

  647. for someone

  648. to really

  649. live this

  650. kind of

  651. relationship

  652. with God

  653. all we need

  654. to do is

  655. read the

  656. gospels

  657. Matthew

  658. Mark

  659. Luke

  660. John

  661. but what's

  662. wonderful is

  663. this

  664. while we

  665. will continue

  666. to love

  667. God in a

  668. way that

  669. falls short

  670. of what

  671. God is

  672. worthy of

  673. one day

  674. God will

  675. so transform

  676. all of his

  677. people

  678. that this

  679. kind of

  680. love

  681. that all

  682. your heart

  683. soul

  684. mind

  685. and strength

  686. love

  687. will be

  688. the normal

  689. and the

  690. natural

  691. in our

  692. relationship

  693. with him

  694. we'll find

  695. ultimate joy

  696. we'll find

  697. happiness

  698. forever

  699. loving him

  700. like that

  701. how do we

  702. know that

  703. this is

  704. true

  705. back to

  706. John

  707. first John

  708. three verses

  709. one and

  710. two

  711. see what

  712. great love

  713. the father

  714. has lavished

  715. on us

  716. that we

  717. should be

  718. called

  719. children

  720. of God

  721. and that

  722. is what

  723. we are

  724. dear friends

  725. he goes

  726. on

  727. now we

  728. are children

  729. of God

  730. and what

  731. we will

  732. be has

  733. not yet

  734. been made

  735. known

  736. but we

  737. know

  738. that when

  739. Christ

  740. appears

  741. we shall

  742. be like

  743. him

  744. for we

  745. shall see

  746. him

  747. as he

  748. is

  749. so there's

  750. coming a

  751. day when

  752. all the

  753. children of

  754. God will

  755. become like

  756. Jesus

  757. when he

  758. appears

  759. when he

  760. returns

  761. there's going

  762. to be a

  763. great

  764. transformation

  765. of all

  766. of us

  767. who are

  768. in Christ

  769. and we

  770. will become

  771. like Jesus

  772. loving God

  773. perfectly

  774. the way

  775. that we

  776. should

  777. with all

  778. our heart

  779. soul

  780. mind

  781. and strength

  782. for the

  783. rest of

  784. forever

  785. Paul spoke

  786. about this

  787. transformation

  788. in his

  789. letter to

  790. the

  791. Corinthians

  792. I won't

  793. go there

  794. but he

  795. talked about

  796. how there's

  797. coming a

  798. day when

  799. in a

  800. flash

  801. in the

  802. twinkling

  803. of an

  804. eye

  805. at the

  806. last

  807. trumpet

  808. the dead

  809. will be

  810. raised

  811. and we

  812. will all

  813. be changed

  814. those of

  815. us who

  816. are in

  817. Christ

  818. will be

  819. given a

  820. new

  821. body

  822. will be

  823. clothed

  824. with

  825. immortality

  826. and we

  827. will come

  828. to bear

  829. the image

  830. the likeness

  831. of the

  832. heavenly

  833. man

  834. Jesus

  835. well when

  836. will this

  837. happen

  838. when Jesus

  839. returns

  840. as he

  841. promised

  842. to

  843. so what

  844. should our

  845. response be

  846. to all

  847. this

  848. we might

  849. look at a

  850. command like

  851. this and

  852. say well

  853. I guess I

  854. need to do

  855. better at

  856. loving God

  857. I guess I

  858. need to make a

  859. greater effort

  860. to love God

  861. more fully and

  862. deeply

  863. it's a command

  864. so we just

  865. need to obey

  866. it

  867. we need to

  868. do it

  869. but I'm

  870. not sure

  871. that's the

  872. way we're

  873. meant to

  874. respond to

  875. this

  876. I think if

  877. we want to

  878. grow in our

  879. love for

  880. God

  881. we need to

  882. discover and

  883. experience for

  884. ourselves more

  885. of how glorious

  886. and how worthy

  887. and how lovely

  888. he is

  889. and the more we

  890. know him and

  891. experience his

  892. goodness and see

  893. his greatness the

  894. more deeply and

  895. fully we will

  896. love him it just

  897. follows and so

  898. I don't want to

  899. end this morning

  900. by telling you

  901. to just go out

  902. and love God

  903. more love him

  904. better I want to

  905. encourage you

  906. rather to seek to

  907. know God for who

  908. he really is and

  909. the rest will

  910. follow you won't

  911. be able but to

  912. love him with all

  913. your heart soul

  914. mind and strength

  915. I don't want to

  916. encourage you this

  917. morning just to

  918. love him more and

  919. deeper because it's

  920. your Christian duty

  921. I want to

  922. encourage you to

  923. long for and

  924. seek for the God

  925. who desires this

  926. kind of relationship

  927. with you

  928. how is your

  929. relationship with

  930. God going

  931. how is your

  932. relationship with

  933. Jesus Christ the

  934. king going

  935. are you enjoying

  936. him deeply

  937. are you growing in

  938. your love for him

  939. week after week

  940. are you spending

  941. time just praying

  942. to him each day

  943. throughout the day

  944. not because it's your

  945. Christian duty or

  946. because you have to

  947. fill a certain number

  948. of minutes to feel

  949. good but just

  950. because you want to

  951. be in this love

  952. relationship with

  953. him

  954. same with reading

  955. your Bible

  956. has it become a

  957. religious task

  958. that you just

  959. I got to do this

  960. to be healthy as a

  961. Christian

  962. just like I got to

  963. eat my vegetables

  964. and my whole wheat

  965. bread

  966. or will you open

  967. your Bible this week

  968. at home on your own

  969. just to be in this

  970. love relationship with

  971. God and hear him

  972. speak to you in the

  973. way that he's chosen

  974. to in our day

  975. and so that's what I

  976. want to encourage us

  977. all with this morning

  978. God loves you

  979. he desires an all-in

  980. love relationship with

  981. you so deeply

  982. a passionate powerful

  983. relationship and he's

  984. done everything to

  985. make it possible

  986. this is what the Bible

  987. is all about

  988. this is the good news

  989. of Jesus

  990. are you into that

  991. let's pray

  992. father in heaven

  993. it blows us away

  994. that this is what

  995. you want with us

  996. compared to you

  997. we're nothing

  998. we're pathetic

  999. we're sinners

  1000. we've blown it

  1001. we've done things

  1002. that we

  1003. we know are

  1004. evil

  1005. are wrong

  1006. and yet you

  1007. love us

  1008. and it's amazing

  1009. God I pray that

  1010. in each of our

  1011. hearts you would

  1012. draw us

  1013. deeper into

  1014. friendship with

  1015. you

  1016. you know exactly

  1017. what's going on

  1018. in each of our

  1019. lives

  1020. the struggles

  1021. that we have

  1022. the challenges

  1023. that we're facing

  1024. the worries

  1025. the doubts

  1026. but we pray

  1027. and ask in these

  1028. moments Lord

  1029. that you would

  1030. pull us close

  1031. that you would

  1032. speak of your

  1033. love to our

  1034. hearts

  1035. and that you

  1036. would bring

  1037. life

  1038. and joy

  1039. reveal yourself

  1040. to us

  1041. in the days

  1042. and weeks

  1043. ahead we ask

  1044. in Jesus name

  1045. amen

  1046. all
