  1. And Jesus said, you will not believe me.

  2. And if I asked you, you would not answer.

  3. Long before this trial, they had already made up their minds about Jesus.

  4. And Jesus knew that even if he was to ask them some questions, they wouldn't answer them.

  5. They were only looking for one thing.

  6. To put Jesus to death.

  7. And that in a way that would still make the people think that they were the good guys.

  8. Jesus said this to them.

  9. From now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of God.

  10. This is quite the claim.

  11. And to catch the full meaning of this, we almost have to go back and read the story carefully.

  12. All along, Jesus has been referring to himself as the Son of Man.

  13. And the Son of Man is a special title.

  14. It refers to the Messiah.

  15. The glorious king who would come to rule God's never-ending kingdom.

  16. As it was revealed to Daniel in a vision long ago.

  17. So Jesus is saying a lot here.

  18. He's saying, yes, I am the Messiah.

  19. And from now on, you will see me seated at the right hand of the mighty God.

  20. And to be seated at the right hand is a special place of privilege and honor and authority.

  21. And so Jesus is saying, from now on, or perhaps the next time you see me,

  22. you will see me having that special position of authority, of glory, of power.

  23. They all asked, are you then the Son of God?

  24. You can almost hear it in their tone of voice, in the way they ask it.

  25. This is not a sincere wondering.

  26. This is an interrogation kind of question.

  27. Are you then the Son of God?

  28. Will you go so far as to claim for yourself that you are God's Son?

  29. And Jesus replied saying, you say that I am.

  30. Not the most direct answer.

  31. And exactly why Jesus answers this way, I'll be honest, I don't know.

  32. It's possible that the question is loaded with misconceptions about what it means for Jesus to be the Son of God.

  33. Or maybe Jesus just wants to get them thinking about what they really intend to accuse Him of here.

  34. Or perhaps Jesus is simply unwilling to answer the question in this moment.

  35. He's not going to deny, and He's not going to give them in this moment what they're looking for.

  36. But somewhere in the course of this conversation, Mark tells us in his Gospel

  37. that Jesus eventually does simply say, yes, I am.

  38. I am the Son of the Blessed One.

  39. The Son of God.

  40. And at this, the trial is over.

  41. They accuse Jesus of blasphemy.

  42. And from there, they march Him off to Pilate, the Roman governor.

  43. And of course, before Pilate, they're not going to charge Him with blasphemy

  44. because Pilate doesn't give a rip about that.

  45. No, before Pilate, they charge Jesus with subverting our nation.

  46. Which basically means disturbing the peace.

  47. Undermining the status quo.

  48. Stirring up the people.

  49. Well, that has some truth to it.

  50. Jesus has kind of been turning things upside down.

  51. He's been exposing the hypocrisy and the corruption

  52. of the majority of the religious leaders in Israel.

  53. It's been a good kind of disturbing the peace.

  54. They go on to say, to accuse Jesus of opposing payment of taxes to Caesar.

  55. Not true.

  56. A blatant lie.

  57. They accuse Jesus of claiming to be the King of the Jews.

  58. And He is.

  59. But they're hoping to get Jesus into some political trouble with Pilate.

  60. So Pilate examines and questions Jesus.

  61. And three times that day, he declares Jesus to be innocent.

  62. And that he's found nothing that he is guilty of or deserving of death.

  63. And then finally, the religious leaders stir up the crowd

  64. to demand that Jesus be executed by crucifixion.

  65. The people begin shouting, crucify Him.

  66. And it goes on and it goes on and it goes on.

  67. Until finally, Pilate gives into their demands

  68. and hands Jesus over to be executed.

  69. After beating Jesus, they march Him out to the place of execution.

  70. They strip Him of His clothes.

  71. They nail His body to a wooden cross.

  72. And then they lift Him up high in the air for all to see.

  73. The people, and especially the religious leaders,

  74. mocked Jesus as they saw Him hanging there, dying.

  75. He saved others.

  76. Let Him save Himself if He is the Son of God.

  77. Jesus, as He hung there suffering,

  78. prayed to God and said,

  79. Father, forgive them,

  80. for they do not know what they are doing.

  81. At about noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.

  82. For the sun stopped shining,

  83. and the curtain of the temple was torn in two.

  84. Jesus called out with a loud voice,

  85. Father,

  86. Father,

  87. into your hands I commit my spirit.

  88. When He had said this, He breathed His last.

  89. The centurion, seeing what had happened,

  90. praised God and said,

  91. Surely, this was a righteous man.

  92. When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place,

  93. they beat their breasts and went away.

  94. But all those who knew Him,

  95. including the women who had followed Him from Galilee,

  96. stood at a distance,

  97. watching these things.

  98. From there,

  99. Jesus' body was taken down and laid in a tomb by a man named Joseph.

  100. This is the true story of Jesus' death,

  101. from Luke's accounting of it.

  102. And we might wonder,

  103. well, what's the meaning of all this?

  104. What are we to do with this?

  105. How do we make sense of this?

  106. And that's probably what most of Jesus' followers were thinking too,

  107. as they witnessed and watched all of this in utter shock and disbelief.

  108. The wonderful, miracle-working man,

  109. who they had got to know and love and follow

  110. around for the past three years,

  111. was executed and now dead.

  112. But even before any of this had happened,

  113. Jesus told them it was coming.

  114. He told them that it was coming,

  115. and He explained why.

  116. He had been saying before all this,

  117. the Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.

  118. He had been saying,

  119. the Son of Man must suffer many things

  120. and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes

  121. and be killed.

  122. He told them it was coming,

  123. and it was at the table,

  124. as they marked the Passover together the night before,

  125. that He explained why.

  126. Let me read that part of the story again for us.

  127. From Luke chapter 22.

    Luke 22 chapter mention

  128. When the hour came,

  129. Jesus and His apostles reclined at the table,

  130. and He said to them,

  131. I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you

  132. before I suffer.

  133. Verse 19.

  134. And He took bread,

  135. gave thanks,

  136. and broke it,

  137. and gave it to them,

  138. saying,

  139. this is my body,

  140. given for you.

  141. Do this in remembrance of me.

  142. In the same way,

  143. after the supper,

  144. He took the cup,

  145. saying,

  146. this cup is the new covenant

  147. covenant in my blood,

  148. which is poured out for you.

  149. Jesus' death was not an accident.

  150. It wasn't a stroke of bad luck.

  151. It wasn't just some bad men

  152. got the upper hand on Him.

  153. No, His death had a deep purpose.

  154. In fact,

  155. it had been part of God's plan all along.

  156. This is my body,

  157. He said,

  158. given for you.

  159. I'm going to die for you,

  160. my friends.

  161. This cup is the new covenant in my blood,

  162. which is poured out for you.

  163. My blood is about to be poured out

  164. for you,

  165. my friends,

  166. to establish a new deal

  167. between you and God.

  168. Oh, there's something much bigger going on here.

  169. And we could go to many other passages

  170. to bring this to light,

  171. but the short and simple of it is this.

  172. All of us have sinned against God.

  173. We are all guilty before Him.

  174. We,

  175. the human race,

  176. rebelled against God

  177. way back at the beginning.

  178. And all of us who are here today

  179. share in the sentence of that guilt.

  180. And each one of us has added to that guilt

  181. with our own sins

  182. and our own evils.

  183. We could talk about the various kinds of sins.

  184. some are obvious,

  185. lying,

  186. disobeying or dishonoring our parents,

  187. sexual immorality,

  188. gossip,

  189. trying to hurt other people.

  190. Or we could talk about

  191. the more subtle sins.

  192. Selfishness.

  193. Pride.

  194. Failing to love God

  195. and other people

  196. the way that we should.

  197. Treating God

  198. as if everything else in life

  199. is more important than He is.

  200. That's just a small sampling.

  201. The list goes on.

  202. There's all kinds of things

  203. that we have done.

  204. All of us have sinned against God

  205. in our actions,

  206. with our words,

  207. in our attitudes.

  208. As Paul says,

  209. we all fall short

  210. of God's glory.

  211. Because of our sins

  212. we are in big trouble with God.

  213. And to do what is right

  214. and just

  215. and good for the world

  216. means that God will someday

  217. have to deal

  218. with our sins,

  219. with our guilt.

  220. In God's own word,

  221. a day of judgment.

  222. A day of punishment.

  223. So that's our big problem.

  224. That's why we desperately need

  225. this new deal

  226. with God

  227. that Jesus came to bring about

  228. by His blood.

  229. We need a way

  230. for our sins to be forgiven.

  231. We need a way

  232. for our guilt

  233. to be taken away.

  234. And God

  235. needs a way

  236. to do that

  237. that is just

  238. and right.

  239. And so long ago

  240. God came up with a way.

  241. The only way.

  242. God would send

  243. His Son, Jesus,

  244. into the world.

  245. He would permit

  246. Jesus to take

  247. the punishment

  248. that we deserve

  249. upon Himself

  250. and suffer

  251. and die

  252. in our place.

  253. The righteous

  254. for the unrighteous.

  255. A substitution.

  256. That's what's going on here.

  257. This is what Jesus means

  258. when He says

  259. my body

  260. given

  261. for you.

  262. My blood

  263. poured out

  264. for you.

  265. and make no mistake

  266. God sent

  267. Jesus to do this

  268. because He loves you.

  269. Because He loves me.

  270. Because He loves

  271. all the people

  272. of the world.

  273. And Jesus

  274. for His part

  275. came to do this

  276. not just because

  277. He had to

  278. but because

  279. He loves you

  280. deeply.

  281. I was reading

  282. this morning

  283. as He said

  284. to His disciples

  285. I lay down

  286. my life

  287. for the sheep.

  288. My choice.

  289. Because I love them.

  290. This was His prayer

  291. as Jesus hung

  292. on the cross.

  293. Father

  294. forgive them.

  295. It was a suffering

  296. and death

  297. that He went to

  298. on purpose

  299. to make

  300. forgiveness

  301. a reality

  302. between God

  303. and everyone

  304. who will seek

  305. His forgiveness.

  306. And so once a month

  307. we do this

  308. in remembrance

  309. of Him.

  310. We celebrate

  311. the Lord's table.

  312. We partake of

  313. broken bread

  314. and a cup

  315. to remember

  316. the love of God

  317. and the love

  318. of Jesus

  319. that saved us

  320. that set us free

  321. that secured

  322. for us

  323. a new

  324. and wonderful

  325. relationship

  326. with God.

  327. This table

  328. is precious

  329. to us.

  330. In a few minutes

  331. we'll hear

  332. the words

  333. of a familiar

  334. song playing

  335. in the background.

  336. Jesus loves me

  337. this I know.

  338. And I just want

  339. to ask you

  340. that question

  341. this morning

  342. as we do this.

  343. Do you know

  344. that Jesus

  345. loves you?

  346. does your heart

  347. know it?

  348. How can we

  349. know it?

  350. Because the Bible

  351. tells us

  352. that Jesus

  353. came to die

  354. for us.

  355. The greatest

  356. act of love

  357. that could ever

  358. be done

  359. at the cross.

  360. So let's

  361. take some time

  362. to quietly

  363. reflect

  364. and pray.

  365. I want to

  366. encourage you

  367. in these moments

  368. as the music

  369. plays

  370. to confess

  371. your sins

  372. to God.

  373. Think over

  374. the past month.

  375. Think over

  376. the past week.

  377. Reflect on

  378. what Jesus

  379. has done

  380. for you

  381. and why.

  382. After we've

  383. had a few

  384. minutes to do

  385. that

  386. Ryan's going

  387. to come up

  388. and he's going

  389. to serve

  390. the bread

  391. and the cup.

  392. And if you're

  393. here this morning

  394. and you have

  395. given yourself

  396. to Jesus

  397. as your

  398. king,

  399. as your

  400. savior,

  401. then I want

  402. to invite you

  403. to partake,

  404. to participate

  405. with us,

  406. to remember

  407. with us.

  408. If you haven't

  409. made that decision

  410. yet, I want

  411. to encourage

  412. you to abstain

  413. from it until

  414. you're ready to.

  415. But perhaps

  416. you could make

  417. that decision

  418. this morning.

  419. It's as simple

  420. as admitting

  421. to God

  422. our sins,

  423. confessing

  424. to him,

  425. asking for

  426. his forgiveness

  427. and asking

  428. for him

  429. to be

  430. our Lord

  431. and our

  432. savior.

  433. We'll wait

  434. until everyone

  435. has been served

  436. and then we'll

  437. eat and we'll

  438. drink together

  439. in unison.

  440. and

  441. okay,

  442. let's

  443. Thank you.

  444. Thank you.

  445. Thank you.

  446. Thank you.

  447. Thank you.

  448. Thank you.

  449. Thank you.

  450. Thank you.

  451. Thank you.

  452. Thank you.

  453. Thank you.

  454. Thank you.

  455. Thank you.

  456. Thank you.

  457. Thank you.

  458. Thank you.

  459. Thank you.

  460. Thank you.

  461. Thank you.

  462. Thank you.

  463. Thank you.

  464. Thank you.

  465. Thank you.

  466. Let's see.

  467. Thank you.

  468. Let's eat and drink in remembrance of Christ.

  469. Let's eat and drink in remembrance of Christ.
