  1. This morning's service is going to be a little different than our usual service.

  2. We are going to be coming to the Lord's table and observing that.

  3. We're not going to have a message like we usually do, a sermon per se,

  4. but we will be listening to the story of Jesus that relates to the Lord's table.

  5. So there'll be kind of singing interspersed with scripture reading.

  6. And so I invite you just to sing when the singing starts.

  7. Just join right in. Most of it you can remain seated.

  8. And for the parts where we'll stand, I'll let you know when that is.

  9. On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread,

  10. when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb,

  11. Jesus' disciples asked him,

  12. Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?

  13. So he sent two of his disciples, telling them,

  14. Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you.

  15. Follow him.

  16. Say to the owner of the house he enters.

  17. The teacher asks,

  18. Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?

  19. He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready.

  20. Make preparations for us there.

  21. The disciples left, went into the city,

  22. and found things just as Jesus had told them.

  23. So they prepared the Passover.

  24. When evening came, Jesus arrived with the twelve.

  25. While they were reclining at the table eating, he said,

  26. Truly, I tell you,

  27. one of you will betray me,

  28. one who is eating with me.

  29. They were saddened,

  30. and one by one they said to him,

  31. Surely you don't mean me.

  32. It is one of the twelve, he replied.

  33. One who dips bread into the bowl with me.

  34. The Son of Man will go,

  35. just as it is written about him.

  36. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man.

  37. It would be better for him if he had not been born.

  38. While they were eating,

  39. Jesus took bread,

  40. and when he had given thanks,

  41. he broke it,

  42. and gave it to his disciples,

  43. saying,

  44. Take it.

  45. This is my body.

  46. Then he took a cup,

  47. and when he had given thanks,

  48. he gave it to them,

  49. and they all drank from it.

  50. This is my blood of the covenant,

  51. which is poured out for many,

  52. he said to them.

  53. Truly,

  54. I tell you,

  55. I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine

  56. until that day when I drink it new

  57. in the kingdom of God.

  58. When they had sung a hymn,

  59. they went out to the Mount of Olives.

  60. Praise God from whom all blessings flow.

  61. Praise him all creatures.

  62. here below.

  63. Praise him above ye heavenly host.

  64. Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

  65. Praise God from whom all blessings flow.

  66. Praise him above ye heavenly host.

  67. Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

  68. Amen.

  69. You will all fall away,

  70. Jesus told them.

  71. For it is written,

  72. I will strike the shepherd,

  73. and the sheep will be scattered.

  74. But after I have risen,

  75. I will go ahead of you into Galilee.

  76. Peter declared,

  77. Even if all fall away,

  78. I will not.

  79. Truly,

  80. I tell you,

  81. Jesus answered,

  82. Today,

  83. yes,

  84. tonight,

  85. before the rooster crows twice,

  86. you yourself will disown me three times.

  87. But Peter insisted emphatically,

  88. Even if I have to die with you,

  89. I will never disown you.

  90. And all the others said the same.

  91. They went to a place called Gethsemane,

  92. and Jesus said to his disciples,

  93. Sit here while I pray.

  94. He took Peter, James, and John along with him,

  95. and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled.

  96. My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow.

  97. To the point of death,

  98. he said to them,

  99. Stay here and keep watch.

  100. Going a little farther,

  101. he fell to the ground

  102. and prayed that if possible,

  103. the hour might pass from him.

  104. Abba,

  105. Father,

  106. he said,

  107. everything is possible for you.

  108. Take this cup from me,

  109. yet not what I will,

  110. but what you will.

  111. Then he returned to his disciples

  112. and found them sleeping.

  113. Simon,

  114. he said to Peter,

  115. are you asleep?

  116. Couldn't you keep watch for one hour?

  117. Watch and pray

  118. so that you will not fall into temptation.

  119. The spirit is willing,

  120. but the flesh is weak.

  121. Once more,

  122. he went away

  123. and prayed the same thing.

  124. When he came back,

  125. he again found them sleeping

  126. because their eyes were heavy.

  127. They did not know

  128. what to say to him.

  129. Returning the third time,

  130. he said to them,

  131. Are you still sleeping and resting?

  132. Enough!

  133. The hour has come.

  134. Look!

  135. The Son of Man is delivered

  136. into the hands of sinners.

  137. Rise!

  138. Let us go.

  139. Here comes my betrayer.

  140. Just as he was speaking,

  141. Judas,

  142. one of the twelve,

  143. appeared.

  144. With him was a crowd

  145. armed with swords

  146. and clubs

  147. sent from the chief priests,

  148. the teachers of the law,

  149. and the elders.

  150. Now the betrayer

  151. had arranged a signal with them.

  152. The one I kiss

  153. is the man.

  154. Arrest him

  155. and lead him away

  156. under guard.

  157. Going at once

  158. to Jesus,

  159. Judas said,

  160. Rabbi!

  161. And kissed him.

  162. The men

  163. seized Jesus

  164. and arrested him.

  165. Then one of those

  166. standing near

  167. drew his sword

  168. and struck the servant

  169. of the high priest,

  170. cutting off his ear.

  171. Am I leading a rebellion,

  172. said Jesus,

  173. that you have come out

  174. with swords

  175. and clubs

  176. to capture me?

  177. Every day

  178. I was with you,

  179. teaching in the temple courts,

  180. and you did not arrest me.

  181. But the scriptures

  182. must be fulfilled.

  183. Then everyone

  184. deserted him

  185. and fled.

  186. man of sorrows,

  187. lamb of God,

  188. by his own betrayed.

  189. The sin of man

  190. and wrath of God

  191. has been on Jesus' grave.

  192. Silent as he stirred,

  193. accused, beaten, mocked,

  194. and scored.

  195. Bowing to the Father's will,

  196. He took a crown of thorns.

  197. Oh, that rugged cross,

  198. my salvation,

  199. where your love poured out

  200. over me.

  201. Now my soul cries out,

  202. hallelujah,

  203. praise and honor

  204. unto thee.

  205. Very early in the morning,

  206. the chief priests

  207. with the elders,

  208. the teachers of the law,

  209. and the whole Sanhedrin

  210. made their plans.

  211. So they bound Jesus,

  212. led him away,

  213. and handed him over to Pilate.

  214. Are you the king of the Jews?

  215. asked Pilate.

  216. You have said so,

  217. Jesus replied.

  218. The chief priests

  219. accused him of many things.

  220. So again,

  221. Pilate asked him,

  222. aren't you going to answer?

  223. See how many things

  224. they are accusing you of.

  225. But Jesus still made no reply,

  226. and Pilate was amazed.

  227. Now,

  228. it was the custom at the festival

  229. to release a prisoner

  230. whom the people requested.

  231. A man called Barabbas

  232. was in prison

  233. with the insurrectionists

  234. who had committed murder

  235. in the uprising.

  236. The crowd came up

  237. and asked Pilate

  238. to do for them

  239. what he usually did.

  240. Do you want me to release to you

  241. the king of the Jews?

  242. asked Pilate,

  243. knowing that it was

  244. out of self-interest

  245. that the chief priests

  246. had handed Jesus over to him.

  247. But the chief priests

  248. stirred up the crowd

  249. to have Pilate

  250. release Barabbas instead.

  251. What shall I do then

  252. with the one you call

  253. the king of the Jews?

  254. Pilate asked them.

  255. Crucify him!

  256. They shouted.

  257. Why?

  258. What crime has he committed?

  259. asked Pilate.

  260. But they shouted

  261. all the louder.

  262. Crucify him!

  263. Wanting to satisfy the crowd,

  264. Pilate released Barabbas to them.

  265. He had Jesus flogged

  266. and handed him over

  267. to be crucified.

  268. The soldiers

  269. led Jesus away

  270. into the palace

  271. that is the praetorium

  272. and called together

  273. the whole company of soldiers.

  274. They put a purple robe on him

  275. then twisted together

  276. a crown of thorns

  277. and set it on him.

  278. And they began

  279. to call out to him,

  280. Hail!

  281. King of the Jews!

  282. Again

  283. and again

  284. they struck him

  285. on the head

  286. with a staff

  287. and spit on him.

  288. Falling on their knees

  289. they paid homage to him

  290. and when they had mocked him

  291. they took off

  292. the purple robe

  293. and put his own clothes

  294. on him.

  295. Then they led him out

  296. to crucify him.

  297. A certain man

  298. from Cyrene,

  299. Simon,

  300. the father of Alexander

  301. and Rufus

  302. was passing by

  303. on his way

  304. in from the country

  305. and they forced him

  306. to carry the cross.

  307. They brought Jesus

  308. to the place

  309. called Golgotha

  310. which means

  311. the place of the skull.

  312. Then they offered him

  313. wine mixed with myrrh

  314. but he did not take it

  315. and they crucified him.

  316. Dividing up his clothes

  317. they cast lots

  318. to see what each would get.

  319. It was nine in the morning

  320. when they crucified him.

  321. The written notice

  322. of the charge against him

  323. read

  324. The King of the Jews!

  325. They crucified two rebels

  326. with him

  327. one on his right

  328. and one on his left.

  329. Those who passed by

  330. hurled insults at him

  331. shaking their heads

  332. and saying

  333. So

  334. you who are going

  335. to destroy the temple

  336. and build it in three days

  337. come down from the cross

  338. and save yourself.

  339. In the same way

  340. the chief priests

  341. and the teachers of the law

  342. mocked him

  343. among themselves.

  344. He saved others

  345. they said

  346. but he can't save himself.

  347. Let this Messiah

  348. this King of Israel

  349. come down now

  350. from the cross

  351. that we may see

  352. and believe.

  353. those crucified with him

  354. also

  355. heaped insults

  356. on him.

  357. were you there

  358. when they

  359. crucified

  360. my Lord

  361. were you there

  362. when they

  363. crucified

  364. my Lord

  365. oh

  366. sometimes

  367. it causes me

  368. to tremble

  369. tremble

  370. tremble

  371. tremble

  372. were you there

  373. when they

  374. crucified

  375. my Lord

  376. were you there

  377. were you there

  378. when they

  379. nailed him

  380. to the tree

  381. were you there

  382. when they

  383. nailed him

  384. to the tree

  385. oh

  386. oh

  387. sometimes

  388. it

  389. causes me

  390. to tremble

  391. tremble

  392. tremble

  393. tremble

  394. were you there

  395. when they

  396. nailed him

  397. to the tree

  398. at noon

  399. darkness

  400. came over

  401. the whole

  402. land

  403. until three

  404. in the

  405. afternoon

  406. and at

  407. three in

  408. the afternoon

  409. Jesus

  410. cried out

  411. in a loud

  412. voice

  413. Eloi

  414. Eloi

  415. lama

  416. sabachthani

  417. which means

  418. my God

  419. my God

  420. why have

  421. you forsaken

  422. me

  423. when some

  424. of those

  425. standing near

  426. heard this

  427. they said

  428. listen

  429. he's calling

  430. Elijah

  431. someone ran

  432. filled a sponge

  433. with wine

  434. vinegar

  435. put it on

  436. his staff

  437. and offered

  438. it to

  439. Jesus to

  440. drink

  441. now leave

  442. him alone

  443. let's see

  444. if Elijah

  445. comes to

  446. take him

  447. down

  448. he said

  449. with a

  450. loud cry

  451. Jesus

  452. breathed

  453. his last

  454. the curtain

  455. of the

  456. temple

  457. was torn

  458. in two

  459. from top

  460. to bottom

  461. and when

  462. the centurion

  463. who stood

  464. there in

  465. front of

  466. Jesus

  467. saw how

  468. he died

  469. he said

  470. surely this

  471. man was

  472. the son

  473. of God

  474. sent of heaven

  475. God's own

  476. son to

  477. purchase

  478. and

  479. redeem

  480. and reconcile

  481. style that

  482. o hè

  483. Where your love poured out over me.

  484. Now my soul cries out, Hallelujah.

  485. Hallelujah, praise and honor unto thee.

  486. Now my debt is paid.

  487. It is paid in full.

  488. By the precious blood that my Jesus spilled.

  489. Now the curse of sin has no hold on me.

  490. Whom the Son sets free, is free indeed.

  491. Now my debt is paid.

  492. It is paid in full.

  493. By the precious blood that my Jesus spilled.

  494. Now the curse of sin has no hold on me.

  495. Whom the Son sets free, O is free indeed.

  496. Oh, that rugged cross my salvation.

  497. Where your love poured out over me.

  498. Now my soul cries out, Hallelujah.

  499. Praise and honor unto thee.

  500. Praise and honor unto thee.

  501. Please stand.

  502. Some women were watching from a distance.

  503. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, the younger, and of Joseph and Salome.

  504. In Galilee, these women had followed him and cared for his needs.

  505. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there.

  506. It was preparation day.

  507. It was preparation day.

  508. That is the day before the Sabbath.

  509. So as evening approached, Joseph of Arimathea, prominent member of the council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus' body.

  510. Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead.

  511. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died.

  512. When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph.

  513. So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock.

  514. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.

  515. Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of Joseph, saw where he was laid.

  516. Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?

  517. Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?

  518. Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.

  519. Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?

  520. Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?

  521. Oh, sometimes it's all that was now.

  522. Oh, sometimes it's all that was now.

  523. Oh, sometimes it's all that was now.

  524. Oh, sometimes it's all that was now.

  525. Marvelous grace of our loving Lord.

  526. Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt.

  527. Yonder on Calvary's mount outpoured

  528. There where the blood of the Lamb was spilled

  529. Grace, grace, God's grace

  530. Grace that will pardon and cleanse within

  531. Grace, grace, God's grace

  532. Grace that is greater than all our sin

  533. Sin and despair like the sea waves cold

  534. Threaten the soul with infinite loss

  535. Grace that is greater, yes, grace untold

  536. Points to the refuge, the mighty cross

  537. Grace, grace, God's grace

  538. Grace that will pardon and cleanse within

  539. Grace, grace, God's grace

  540. Grace that is greater than all our sin

  541. Dark is the stain that we cannot hide

  542. What can avail to wash it away

  543. Look, there is flowing a crimson tide

  544. Brighter than snow you may be today

  545. Grace, grace, God's grace

  546. Grace, grace, God's grace

  547. Grace that will pardon and cleanse within

  548. Grace, grace, God's grace

  549. Grace that is greater than all our sin

  550. Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace

  551. Grace, grace, grace

  552. Freely bestowed on all who believe

  553. You that are longing to see His face

  554. Will you this moment His grace receive

  555. Grace, grace, God's grace

  556. Grace, grace, grace

  557. Grace that will pardon and cleanse within

  558. Grace, grace, God's grace

  559. Grace, grace, grace

  560. Grace that is greater than all our sin

  561. Grace that is greater than all our sin

  562. Grace that is greater than all our sin

  563. You may be seated.

  564. Well, you've just heard, again, the story behind this table

  565. The story of Jesus

  566. That story is precious to us

  567. It tells us of the love that God has for us

  568. Jesus explained that night that He was betrayed

  569. When He was gathered around the table with His disciples

  570. The meaning of all of this

  571. He told them as He shared the cup around with them

  572. That that cup represented His blood

  573. Which is about to be poured out for them

  574. Why?

  575. For the forgiveness of sins

  576. Do you know that you are a sinner?

  577. That you have broken God's holy law

  578. And done things that in His sight are wicked

  579. Are wrong

  580. God is just

  581. And He can't just let us get away with that

  582. He can't just let us off the hook

  583. Just because

  584. Something had to be done

  585. So that we could be forgiven in a way that was right

  586. In a way that was just

  587. And that something

  588. Was to send His Son, Jesus, into the world

  589. Into the world

  590. And for Him to die

  591. In our place

  592. On the cross

  593. An amazing sacrifice

  594. And gift of love

  595. And as we just sang

  596. A gracious gift

  597. For all who will believe

  598. It's not something we could earn

  599. It's not something we could ever deserve

  600. But because God is kind

  601. And merciful

  602. And loving

  603. He sent Jesus

  604. To do that for us

  605. Do you know that?

  606. Does your heart know that?

  607. Have you made that decision?

  608. To do what Jesus called all people to do

  609. To repent

  610. To turn to God

  611. And acknowledge

  612. That you have blown it

  613. That you have done wrong by Him

  614. And to seek His forgiveness

  615. And have you put your faith and your trust in Jesus

  616. The one that God sent to save

  617. To save

  618. It's the most important decision

  619. That you could ever make in your life

  620. As I said at the beginning of the service

  621. There is a day coming when Jesus returns

  622. And He will be the King

  623. Of the Kingdom of God

  624. Will you be ready for that day?

  625. Will you have a way to be off the hook?

  626. That the way that God has provided

  627. For all the things that you have done

  628. Jesus is the only way

  629. And that's what we celebrate

  630. And mark once a month

  631. When we come to this table

  632. And so if you are trusting in that

  633. And your hope is in that

  634. And you are someone who believes in Jesus

  635. And belongs to Him

  636. Then I invite you to participate with us

  637. To take of the cup and the bread

  638. In just a moment Charles is going to come up

  639. And he's going to pass them out

  640. And if that's you

  641. You believe that

  642. Then please take

  643. And eat and drink with us

  644. We'll wait until everybody has been served

  645. And then at the end

  646. We'll eat and drink together in unison

  647. But before we do that

  648. I just want to give us a couple minutes

  649. Of quiet reflection

  650. A couple moments for you

  651. To think about

  652. Where you are at with God right now

  653. How's your relationship with Him going?

  654. Where do you stand before God?

  655. Where do you stand before God?

  656. Thank you.

  657. Thank you.

  658. Thank you.

  659. Thank you.

  660. Thank you.

  661. Thank you.

  662. Thank you.

  663. I invite you to stand as we sing to the Lord.

  664. Thank you.

  665. Amen.

  666. You're the name above all names.

  667. All our hope is in you.

  668. All our hope is in you.

  669. All the glory to God.

  670. The light of the world.

  671. Jesus, Jesus, name above all names.

  672. Name above all names.

  673. Our blessed Redeemer, our blessed Redeemer, the rescue for sinners.

  674. The rescue for sinners, the ransom from heaven.

  675. The ransom from heaven.

  676. Jesus, Jesus, Lord of all.

  677. Jesus, Lord of all.

  678. Jesus, Lord of all.

  679. You may be seated.

  680. You may be seated.

  681. When the Sabbath was in you.

  682. When the Sabbath was over.

  683. Jesus, Jesus, Lord of all things.

  684. And Salome bought spices.

  685. And Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus' body.

  686. Very early on the first day of the day, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb.

  687. And they asked each other,

  688. Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?

  689. But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away.

  690. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side.

  691. the right side and they were alarmed. Don't be alarmed, he said. You are looking for Jesus,

  692. the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen. He is not here. See the place where they laid him,

  693. but go. Tell his disciples and Peter. He is going ahead of you into Galilee.

  694. There you will see him just as he told you.

  695. I'll invite you to stand again.

  696. Amen.

  697. He arose with a mighty triumph for his foes. He arose a victor from the dark domain,

  698. and he lives forever with his saints to reign. He arose, he arose. Hallelujah. Christ arose.

  699. He arose.

  700. Vainly they watch his bed, Jesus my Savior. Vainly they seal the dead, Jesus my Lord.

  701. Up from the grave he arose. With a mighty triumph for his foes. He arose a victor from the dark domain,

  702. and he lives forever with his saints to reign. He arose, he arose. Hallelujah. Christ arose.

  703. Death cannot keep his prey, Jesus my Savior. He tore the bars away, Jesus my Lord.

  704. Up from the grave he arose. He arose. He arose. He arose. He arose. Hallelujah. Christ arose. One more time.

  705. He arose. He arose. He arose. Hallelujah. Christ arose.

  706. I heard an old, old story. How a Savior came from glory. How he gave his life on Calvary.

  707. To save a wretch like me. How he gave his life on Calvary. How he gave his life on Calvary.

  708. To save a wretch like me. I heard about his groaning. Of his precious blood's atoning.

  709. Then I repented of my sins and won the victory. Oh, victory in Jesus my Savior.

  710. He was a Savior forever. He sought me and bought me with his redeeming blood.

  711. He loved me ere I knew him. And all my love is due him. He plunged me to victory.

  712. Beneath the cleansing blood.

  713. Beneath the cleansing blood.

  714. Beneath the cleansing blood.

  715. Beneath the cleansing blood.

  716. I heard about his healing. Of his cleansing power revealing.

  717. How he made the lane to walk again. And caused the blind to see.

  718. And then I cried, Dear Jesus, Come and heal my broken spirit.

  719. And somehow Jesus came and brought to me the victory. Oh, victory in Jesus my Savior forever.

  720. He sought me and bought me with his redeeming blood. He loved me ere I knew him. And all my love is due him. He plunged me to victory. Beneath the cleansing flood.

  721. Beneath the cleansing flood. I heard about a mansion he has built for me in glory. And I heard about the streets of gold beyond the crystal sea.

  722. Beneath the cleansing blood.

  723. Beneath the cleansing blood. And the old redemption story. And some sweet day I'll sing up there that song of victory. Oh, victory in Jesus my Savior forever.

  724. Beneath the cleansing blood.

  725. He sought me and bought me with his redeeming blood. He sought me and bought me with his redeeming blood.

  726. He loved me ere I knew him. And all my love is due him. He plunged me to victory beneath the cleansing flood.

  727. He plunged me to victory beneath the cleansing flood.

  728. Hallelujah. Amen.

  729. Lord Jesus, we thank you so much

  730. for your great love for us

  731. and that through you, we, undeserving as we are,

  732. can have victory,

  733. can have life,

  734. can have a relationship with you,

  735. the God who created the world and everything in it.

  736. We love you so much and we thank you

  737. for all you've done for us.

  738. We pray and ask that you would go with us

  739. from here today and this week

  740. and that you would put this message

  741. and this hope and this life on our lips

  742. that we would be able to share it

  743. with our neighbors, friends, coworkers,

  744. people we bump into.

  745. Bless us all and go with us.

  746. We ask this in your name, Jesus.

  747. Amen.

  748. You may be seated.
