  1. All right, well this morning we're finally coming back to our long-running sermon series

  2. through the Gospel of John.

  3. We started this series back around Christmas of 2019, and we've been kind of just working

  4. through really slow, sometimes verse by verse.

  5. For those of you who were there right from the start, I don't expect that you'll remember

  6. everything that we've seen and discovered in John.

  7. In fact, I don't even remember everything I've said.

  8. But in case you want to go back and refer to a previous message, you can find them all

  9. on the church website, and we're going to continue the story this fall.

  10. So if you have your Bible with you, please open it up to John chapter 10.

    John 10 chapter mention

  11. It's a familiar passage to many of us who have been in the church a long time, and this is

  12. Jesus talking here.

  13. We're going to start by reading the first 10 verses.

  14. This is Jesus.

  15. Very truly, I tell you Pharisees, anyone who does not enter the sheep pen by the gate,

  16. but climbs in by some other way, is a thief and a robber.

  17. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.

  18. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice.

  19. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

  20. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him

  21. because they know his voice.

  22. But they will never follow a stranger.

  23. In fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger's voice.

  24. Jesus used this figure of speech, but the Pharisees did not understand what he was telling them.

  25. Therefore, Jesus said again,

  26. Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep.

  27. All who have come before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep have not listened to them.

  28. I am the gate.

  29. Whoever enters through me will be saved.

  30. They will come in and go out and find pasture.

  31. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.

  32. I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.

  33. Father in heaven, as we look into your word, we pray and ask that you would open our eyes to see.

  34. We ask that you would help us to take something good from this

  35. and that you would strengthen our faith in you.

  36. We ask this in your name.

  37. Amen.

  38. Well, as we come to these words of Jesus this morning,

  39. the first thing that we want to figure out here is who Jesus is talking to

  40. and what's going on here.

  41. Verse 1 in the NIV says,

  42. Very truly, I tell you Pharisees.

  43. Now, in the original language, it doesn't say Pharisees,

  44. and neither do most translations.

  45. It just says, I tell you, plural.

  46. But the NIV, I think, is on the right track

  47. in trying to help us understand who Jesus is talking to.

  48. We might assume that because it's a new chapter,

  49. that this is a fresh story about Jesus

  50. and that what's here is different from what was in chapter 9.

  51. But actually, the chapter divisions, as some of you know,

  52. were added to the Bible over a thousand years

  53. after the New Testament was written.

  54. So if you can bring yourself to kind of ignore those chapters and titles

  55. and just kind of read back and forth from chapter 9 to chapter 10,

  56. you'll notice that what happens in chapter 10

  57. is just a continuation of the story from chapter 9.

  58. So what happened back in chapter 9?

  59. I'm not going to re-preach those three messages,

  60. but basically we heard about how Jesus healed a man

  61. who had been blind from birth.

  62. And then we heard about how the Pharisees

  63. conducted their own investigation of his healing.

  64. They questioned the man repeatedly,

  65. and they did not want to accept that Jesus, their rival,

  66. had actually performed an amazing miracle,

  67. something that only God can do.

  68. And they wore this poor man out

  69. trying to find some way to discredit this miracle

  70. to the point where the man eventually got fed up

  71. and told them what he really thought about Jesus.

  72. And then they insulted the man,

  73. and they excommunicated him from the synagogue.

  74. They kicked him out.

  75. And then we heard how Jesus, after that,

  76. went and found this man who had been blind,

  77. and Jesus revealed himself to the man,

  78. that he was the Messiah,

  79. the one who had healed him.

  80. And the man believed and worshipped Jesus.

  81. But back in chapter 9, verse 40,

  82. we read that at that same time,

  83. some Pharisees who were with Jesus

  84. heard him say this and asked,

  85. what, are we blind too?

  86. Jesus responded to them.

  87. He said, if you were blind,

  88. you would not be guilty of sin.

  89. But now that you claim you can see,

  90. your guilt remains.

  91. Very truly, I tell you.

  92. So you see how it just flows right from

  93. chapter 9 into chapter 10.

  94. So this is the scene.

  95. The blind man is there.

  96. The man who was blind,

  97. he's now healed.

  98. Jesus is there.

  99. And the Pharisees are there.

  100. And there's been this exchange.

  101. And Jesus is going to continue to speak

  102. to the Pharisees.

  103. And what does he say?

  104. Verse 1.

  105. He says,

  106. Very truly, I tell you,

  107. anyone who does not enter the sheep pen

  108. by the gate,

  109. but climbs in by some other way,

  110. is a thief and a robber.

  111. So as he's talking to these Pharisees,

  112. these religious leaders,

  113. Jesus launches into a sort of parable.

  114. Kind of a figure of speech,

  115. John tells us in verse 6.

  116. Jesus used this figure of speech.

  117. Maybe not quite the same

  118. as some of Jesus' other parables,

  119. but maybe kind of like an analogy.

  120. And yeah,

  121. he uses the everyday common stuff

  122. of sheep farming to make his point.

  123. And so we're going to try and walk with Jesus

  124. through this and understand

  125. a little bit of the common,

  126. everyday stuff of sheep farming

  127. back in the first century.

  128. And then we'll try and see

  129. what Jesus' point is in all this.

  130. What's he saying to them?

  131. So verse 1.

  132. Very truly,

  133. I tell you,

  134. anyone who does not enter the sheep pen

  135. by the gate,

  136. but climbs in by some other way,

  137. is a thief

  138. and a robber.

  139. Let's start with the sheep pen.

  140. Here's a picture of a sheep pen

  141. or a sheep fold.

  142. This is probably what Jesus had in mind.

  143. Apparently it was common for them

  144. to make them out of stones like this.

  145. And there'd often,

  146. there of course would be an entrance

  147. for the sheep to get in.

  148. And sometimes it'd be a little fancier

  149. and it would have a gate.

  150. And basically the idea was

  151. that you could put the sheep in there

  152. and keep them all in one place

  153. and it would provide shelter for them.

  154. And they would be safe,

  155. especially at night.

  156. So Jesus says,

  157. anyone who does not enter the sheep pen

  158. by the gate,

  159. but climbs in by some other way,

  160. is a thief

  161. and a robber.

  162. The one who enters by the gate

  163. is the shepherd of the sheep.

  164. So basically Jesus is saying

  165. that there's a way to know

  166. who is the shepherd of the sheep

  167. and who is not.

  168. Kind of like this,

  169. you know,

  170. if you were to see this

  171. as you're walking by

  172. your neighbor's house

  173. or driving by

  174. your neighbor's acreage,

  175. you're probably going to wonder

  176. what's going on there.

  177. Could be that they locked themselves out.

  178. But in ancient times,

  179. they probably didn't have locks

  180. on the sheep gate.

  181. So you can know

  182. who the shepherd is

  183. versus who the thief is,

  184. whether or not

  185. they're using the gate.

  186. If you see someone

  187. in the middle of the night

  188. dressed in black

  189. slipping over the wall,

  190. odds are pretty good

  191. that they're up to no good.

  192. Maybe they're slipping in

  193. to pull a little heist.

  194. Verse 3,

  195. Jesus says,

  196. the gatekeeper opens the gate

  197. for him,

  198. the shepherd,

  199. and the sheep listen

  200. to his voice.

  201. He calls his own sheep

  202. by name

  203. and leads them out.

  204. And the emphasis here

  205. is on the shepherd.

  206. It's to him

  207. that the gatekeeper opens,

  208. not to anybody else.

  209. So there's another way

  210. to recognize

  211. who the true shepherd is,

  212. whether or not

  213. the gatekeeper recognizes him

  214. and opens the gate for him.

  215. Jesus then gives a third way

  216. to know who

  217. the true shepherd

  218. of the sheep is

  219. in this same verse.

  220. And the sheep

  221. listen to his voice.

  222. And probably the sense

  223. of listen there

  224. is not just that they hear it,

  225. but that they respond to it.

  226. The shepherd calls

  227. or gives his commands

  228. and they respond,

  229. they move,

  230. they come,

  231. or whatever it is

  232. that he has told them to do.

  233. They do it.

  234. And this kind of seems

  235. to be the main thrust

  236. of Jesus' analogy.

  237. He's giving a whole bunch

  238. of different ways

  239. that we can tell

  240. the difference

  241. between the true shepherd

  242. of the sheep

  243. and one who is not

  244. the true shepherd

  245. of the sheep.

  246. Between the rightful owner

  247. of the flock

  248. or the imposter

  249. who's trying to make off

  250. with some of the plunder.

  251. So three different ways

  252. he's already given us

  253. and then there are

  254. a few more.

  255. It says that he calls

  256. his own sheep

  257. by name

  258. and leads them out.

  259. So a fourth way

  260. to know who the true shepherd is,

  261. he calls them by name.

  262. There is a bond

  263. between shepherd

  264. and sheep

  265. that can be easily recognized.

  266. He calls them by name.

  267. There's a lot of significance

  268. in naming things.

  269. Traditionally,

  270. you would name things

  271. by their unique characteristics.

  272. The things that set

  273. those things apart

  274. from other things.

  275. And so my grandparents' dog

  276. we called Skippy

  277. because from the time

  278. Skippy was a puppy,

  279. he kind of skipped along

  280. on the grass.

  281. He ran in a funny way.

  282. The true shepherd

  283. has that kind of a bond

  284. with his sheep.

  285. He has spent enough time

  286. with them

  287. to know their unique characteristics.

  288. Enough to name them.

  289. And so that sheep

  290. with the floppy ear

  291. over there

  292. is called Floppy.

  293. And that one

  294. that likes to roll around

  295. is called Dusty.

  296. And he leads them out,

  297. says Jesus.

  298. When the shepherd says,

  299. all right guys,

  300. let's go get you guys

  301. some food.

  302. And walks out the door,

  303. they get up

  304. and they go.

  305. They follow him.

  306. So Jesus says,

  307. you know the true shepherd

  308. from the thief

  309. because the true shepherd

  310. calls the sheep

  311. by their names.

  312. And it's obvious

  313. that he knows them.

  314. They listen to his voice.

  315. They do what he says.

  316. There's that bond,

  317. that relationship.

  318. Verse 4.

  319. When he has brought out

  320. all his own,

  321. he goes on ahead of them.

  322. And his sheep follow him

  323. because they know his voice.

  324. But they will never

  325. follow a stranger.

  326. In fact,

  327. they will run away from him

  328. because they do not recognize

  329. a stranger's voice.

  330. Kind of along the same lines

  331. as what we've already heard,

  332. but kind of spelled out

  333. in more detail.

  334. The shepherd goes out the gate

  335. leading them

  336. and continues on

  337. in the field

  338. or wherever they're going

  339. and the sheep follow.

  340. Jesus says,

  341. it's because they recognize

  342. the shepherd's voice.

  343. In contrast,

  344. the stranger,

  345. they won't follow

  346. the stranger.

  347. The stranger may call,

  348. but the sheep

  349. will run away from him.

  350. They don't know him.

  351. They don't recognize

  352. his voice.

  353. Now,

  354. if this was all

  355. Jesus had said

  356. right here,

  357. we'd probably all

  358. be scratching our heads

  359. wondering,

  360. what is Jesus

  361. talking about?

  362. In fact,

  363. that's exactly

  364. what the Pharisees

  365. were doing.

  366. In verse 6,

  367. right after this,

  368. John tells us,

  369. Jesus used this figure

  370. of speech,

  371. but the Pharisees

  372. did not understand

  373. what he was telling them.

  374. What does all this

  375. have to do with anything?

  376. Why are you telling us

  377. about sheep

  378. and pens

  379. and shepherds

  380. and thieves?

  381. I bet you they were

  382. listening very carefully,

  383. like,

  384. is all of this

  385. some clever way

  386. of trying to

  387. insult us

  388. or say something

  389. against us?

  390. What does Jesus

  391. mean by all this?

  392. And we'll get to

  393. unpacking it

  394. in a minute,

  395. but first,

  396. Jesus has more

  397. to say.

  398. I'm going to read

  399. from verse 7

  400. to verse 11.

  401. Therefore,

  402. Jesus said again,

  403. Very truly,

  404. I tell you,

  405. I am the gate

  406. for the sheep.

  407. All who have

  408. come before me

  409. are thieves

  410. and robbers,

  411. but the sheep

  412. have not listened

  413. to them.

  414. I am the gate.

  415. Whoever enters

  416. through me

  417. will be saved.

  418. They will come in

  419. and go out

  420. and find pasture.

  421. The thief

  422. comes only

  423. to steal

  424. and kill

  425. and destroy.

  426. I have come

  427. that they may

  428. have life

  429. and have it

  430. to the full.

  431. I am the

  432. good shepherd.

  433. shepherd.

  434. Okay,

  435. so here

  436. in verse 7

  437. and in

  438. verse 9

  439. as Jesus

  440. continues,

  441. he tells

  442. them that

  443. he is

  444. the gate.

  445. It's kind

  446. of a strange

  447. thing.

  448. We're not

  449. expecting maybe

  450. Jesus to say

  451. that.

  452. I am the

  453. gate for

  454. the sheep.

  455. He says it

  456. twice.

  457. We're going

  458. to come back

  459. to that

  460. in a couple

  461. weeks.

  462. But for now

  463. we want to

  464. focus more

  465. on this idea

  466. of the true

  467. shepherd versus

  468. the thieves

  469. and robbers.

  470. So we're just

  471. going to look

  472. at verse 8

  473. and verse 10

  474. of this section.

  475. In verse 8

  476. Jesus says

  477. this,

  478. All who have

  479. come before

  480. me are thieves

  481. and robbers,

  482. but the sheep

  483. have not

  484. listened to

  485. them.

  486. That's quite a

  487. statement to

  488. make.

  489. All who have

  490. come before

  491. me are thieves

  492. and robbers.

  493. There's a fair

  494. bit of discussion

  495. here.

  496. But most

  497. Christians agree

  498. that Jesus

  499. when he says

  500. all who came

  501. before me

  502. does not mean

  503. all is in

  504. every person.

  505. He's not

  506. referring to

  507. the faithful

  508. prophets

  509. and priests

  510. and kings,

  511. men like

  512. Abraham and

  513. Moses and

  514. Isaiah.

  515. He's not

  516. calling them

  517. thieves and

  518. robbers.

  519. He's already

  520. talked about

  521. them in the

  522. pages that

  523. came before

  524. this as

  525. being some

  526. of the

  527. faithful men

  528. whom God

  529. sent.

  530. So all

  531. probably refers

  532. to the many

  533. who have

  534. arisen in

  535. the past

  536. and have

  537. taken up

  538. a role of

  539. leadership

  540. in Israel

  541. but were

  542. not chosen

  543. by God

  544. or sent

  545. by God.

  546. I'm guessing

  547. that Jesus

  548. is talking

  549. about false

  550. prophets,

  551. illegitimate

  552. priests,

  553. and wicked

  554. kings.

  555. prophets.

  556. Let's look

  557. for a moment

  558. back to

  559. what God

  560. said hundreds

  561. of years

  562. earlier through

  563. the prophet

  564. Ezekiel.

  565. Ezekiel chapter

    Ezekiel 34 chapter mention

  566. 34.

  567. This is

  568. Ezekiel

  569. writing,

  570. The word

  571. of the Lord

  572. came to

  573. me,

  574. Son of

  575. man,

  576. prophesy

  577. against the

  578. shepherds

  579. of Israel.

  580. Prophesy

  581. and say

  582. to them,

  583. this is what

  584. the sovereign

  585. Lord says,

  586. Woe to

  587. you shepherds

  588. of Israel

  589. who only

  590. take care

  591. of yourselves.

  592. Should not

  593. shepherds

  594. take care

  595. of the

  596. flock?

  597. You eat

  598. the curds,

  599. clothe

  600. yourselves

  601. with the

  602. wool,

  603. and slaughter

  604. the choice

  605. animals,

  606. but you

  607. do not

  608. take care

  609. of the

  610. flock.

  611. You have

  612. not strengthened

  613. the weak

  614. or healed

  615. the sick

  616. or bound

  617. up the

  618. injured.

  619. You have

  620. not brought

  621. back the

  622. strays or

  623. searched for

  624. the lost.

  625. You have

  626. ruled them

  627. harshly

  628. and brutally.

  629. So they

  630. were scattered

  631. because there

  632. was no

  633. shepherd.

  634. And when

  635. they were

  636. scattered,

  637. they became

  638. food for

  639. all the

  640. wild animals.

  641. My sheep

  642. wandered over

  643. all the

  644. mountains and

  645. on every

  646. high hill.

  647. They were

  648. scattered over

  649. the whole

  650. earth and

  651. no one

  652. searched or

  653. looked for

  654. them.

  655. Therefore,

  656. you shepherds,

  657. hear the

  658. word of the

  659. Lord.

  660. As surely

  661. as I live,

  662. declares the

  663. sovereign Lord,

  664. shepherd,

  665. because my

  666. flock lacks a

  667. shepherd and

  668. so has been

  669. food for all

  670. the wild

  671. animals.

  672. And because my

  673. shepherds did

  674. not search for

  675. my flock but

  676. cared for

  677. themselves rather

  678. than for my

  679. flock,

  680. therefore you

  681. shepherds hear

  682. the word of

  683. the Lord.

  684. This is what the

  685. sovereign Lord

  686. says.

  687. I am against

  688. the shepherds

  689. and will hold

  690. them accountable

  691. for my flock.

  692. I will remove

  693. them from

  694. tending the

  695. flock so that

  696. the shepherds

  697. can no longer

  698. feed themselves.

  699. I will rescue

  700. my flock from

  701. their mouths and

  702. it will no longer

  703. be food for

  704. them.

  705. For this is what

  706. the sovereign

  707. Lord says.

  708. I myself will

  709. search for my

  710. sheep and look

  711. after them.

  712. As a shepherd

  713. looks after his

  714. scattered flock when

  715. he is with them,

  716. so will I look

  717. after my sheep.

  718. I will rescue

  719. them from all

  720. the places where

  721. they were scattered

  722. on a day of

  723. clouds and

  724. darkness.

  725. I will bring

  726. them out from

  727. the nations and

  728. gather them from

  729. the countries and

  730. I will bring them

  731. into their own

  732. land.

  733. I will pasture

  734. them on the

  735. mountains of

  736. Israel, in the

  737. ravines and in

  738. all the settlements

  739. in the land.

  740. I will tend them

  741. in a good pasture

  742. and the mountain

  743. heights of Israel

  744. will be their

  745. grazing land.

  746. There they will

  747. lie down in good

  748. grazing land and

  749. there they will

  750. feed in a rich

  751. pasture on the

  752. mountains of

  753. Israel.

  754. I myself will

  755. tend my sheep

  756. and have them

  757. lie down, declares

  758. the sovereign

  759. Lord.

  760. I will search for

  761. the lost and

  762. bring back the

  763. strays.

  764. I will bind up

  765. the injured and

  766. strengthen the

  767. weak.

  768. I will shepherd

  769. the flock with

  770. justice.

  771. Now there's a lot

  772. there, but I

  773. think it helps us

  774. understand what

  775. Jesus is talking

  776. about here.

  777. the leaders or

  778. the shepherds of

  779. Israel is who

  780. the Lord was

  781. speaking against

  782. through Ezekiel.

  783. Not the good

  784. kind of leaders

  785. like King David,

  786. but the wicked

  787. ones.

  788. The ones who

  789. use their

  790. positions of

  791. leadership just

  792. for personal

  793. gain.

  794. The ones who

  795. took from the

  796. sheep so that

  797. they could live

  798. in comfort and

  799. luxury.

  800. Think of men

  801. like Samuel's

  802. sons or King

  803. Ahab or men

  804. like the bunch

  805. of false

  806. prophets that

  807. Micah prophesied

  808. about.

  809. These are the

  810. people that I

  811. think Jesus has

  812. in mind and

  813. there were lots

  814. of them.

  815. When he says

  816. all who came

  817. before me are

  818. thieves and

  819. robbers, it's

  820. these kinds of

  821. people that he's

  822. talking about.

  823. But Jesus

  824. says the sheep

  825. have not listened

  826. to them.

  827. All along, the

  828. true faith-filled

  829. people of God

  830. through the ages

  831. did not listen

  832. to those wicked

  833. men.

  834. They knew that

  835. they were corrupt.

  836. They knew that

  837. they were wicked

  838. leaders.

  839. They weren't

  840. led astray.

  841. Are you beginning

  842. to see where

  843. Jesus is going

  844. with this?

  845. And here's the

  846. clue.

  847. The sheep have

  848. not listened

  849. to them.

  850. this man who

  851. had been blind

  852. has just had

  853. this investigation

  854. with the

  855. shepherds of

  856. Israel, the

  857. religious leaders,

  858. the Pharisees.

  859. They've been

  860. trying to tell

  861. him how he

  862. should be

  863. thinking about

  864. Jesus and

  865. shepherd and

  866. guide him to

  867. certain conclusions

  868. about Jesus.

  869. But even

  870. though they're

  871. in positions of

  872. spiritual authority

  873. and leadership,

  874. the man who

  875. had been blind

  876. won't listen

  877. to them.

  878. How utterly

  879. frustrating.

  880. In fact, the

  881. Pharisees even

  882. said to the man,

  883. how dare you

  884. lecture us?

  885. And instead,

  886. they come out

  887. the door and

  888. find him on

  889. his face

  890. worshiping

  891. Jesus.

  892. and he

  893. just accepts

  894. every word

  895. that Jesus

  896. says.

  897. It's as though

  898. Jesus is

  899. saying,

  900. you want to

  901. know why

  902. this man

  903. and others

  904. will not

  905. listen to

  906. you,

  907. Pharisees?

  908. It's because

  909. you Pharisees

  910. are thieves

  911. and robbers.

  912. You are not

  913. the ones

  914. whom God

  915. has appointed

  916. to be the

  917. shepherd of

  918. his flock.

  919. And so they

  920. don't listen

  921. to you.

  922. Verse 10,

  923. Jesus goes

  924. on.

  925. He says,

  926. the thief

  927. comes only

  928. to steal

  929. and kill

  930. and destroy.

  931. That's the

  932. only time

  933. he comes

  934. around,

  935. is for that

  936. purpose.

  937. I have

  938. come that

  939. they,

  940. the sheep,

  941. may have

  942. life and

  943. have it to

  944. the full.

  945. I am the

  946. shepherd,

  947. the good

  948. one.

  949. Jesus

  950. finally lays

  951. it on the

  952. table.

  953. You want

  954. to know

  955. the big

  956. difference

  957. between me

  958. and you,

  959. Pharisees?

  960. He doesn't

  961. say it that

  962. directly.

  963. It's all

  964. in the

  965. analogy.

  966. The thief,

  967. you guys

  968. come only

  969. to steal

  970. and kill

  971. and destroy.

  972. But I

  973. have come

  974. so that

  975. they,

  976. people like

  977. him,

  978. the man

  979. who had

  980. been blind,

  981. might have

  982. life and

  983. have it to

  984. the full.

  985. You Pharisees

  986. are in

  987. it for

  988. yourselves.

  989. And when

  990. you come

  991. around,

  992. it's to

  993. take from

  994. my people.

  995. It results

  996. in nothing

  997. but loss

  998. and damage

  999. and hurt

  1000. and destruction

  1001. for my

  1002. people.

  1003. But I

  1004. have come

  1005. so that

  1006. they might

  1007. have life

  1008. and have

  1009. it to

  1010. the full.

  1011. And Jesus

  1012. flat out

  1013. tells them,

  1014. I am

  1015. the shepherd,

  1016. the true

  1017. shepherd,

  1018. the good

  1019. shepherd.

  1020. shepherd.

  1021. This, I

  1022. think, is

  1023. the meaning

  1024. of this

  1025. parable of

  1026. Jesus.

  1027. There are

  1028. thieves,

  1029. robbers,

  1030. strangers,

  1031. imposters.

  1032. That's the

  1033. Pharisees.

  1034. That's all

  1035. the corrupt,

  1036. wicked leaders

  1037. of Israel

  1038. over the

  1039. ages.

  1040. And then

  1041. there is the

  1042. true shepherd.

  1043. That's

  1044. Jesus,

  1045. the one

  1046. sent from

  1047. heaven by

  1048. God to

  1049. shepherd his

  1050. people.

  1051. people.

  1052. There's the

  1053. Pharisees who

  1054. burden the

  1055. people and

  1056. find religious

  1057. ways to

  1058. take from

  1059. the people

  1060. who don't

  1061. give a rip

  1062. about the

  1063. weak or

  1064. the sick

  1065. or the

  1066. injured.

  1067. And then

  1068. there's Jesus

  1069. who loves the

  1070. sheep dearly.

  1071. He has

  1072. come to

  1073. shepherd the

  1074. flock,

  1075. to search

  1076. for the

  1077. lost,

  1078. to bring

  1079. back the

  1080. strays,

  1081. to bind

  1082. up the

  1083. injured and

  1084. strengthen

  1085. the weak.

  1086. And lead

  1087. them into

  1088. good pasture.

  1089. We'll get to

  1090. next week,

  1091. what Jesus

  1092. means when

  1093. he says,

  1094. I am the

  1095. good shepherd.

  1096. But for

  1097. this morning,

  1098. we're focusing

  1099. on this

  1100. truth that

  1101. Jesus is

  1102. the true

  1103. shepherd.

  1104. He's not

  1105. like the

  1106. Pharisees,

  1107. who were

  1108. thieves and

  1109. robbers.

  1110. He is the

  1111. one to whom

  1112. the sheep

  1113. really belong.

  1114. The one

  1115. whom God

  1116. has appointed

  1117. and sent

  1118. to shepherd

  1119. his flock.

  1120. And unlike

  1121. the thieves

  1122. and robbers,

  1123. as we see

  1124. in this

  1125. verse,

  1126. Jesus,

  1127. the true

  1128. shepherd,

  1129. actually cares

  1130. for the

  1131. sheep.

  1132. He loves

  1133. them.

  1134. What a

  1135. contrast we

  1136. see here.

  1137. Jesus'

  1138. disciples didn't

  1139. have a whole

  1140. lot of

  1141. compassion for

  1142. the man who

  1143. had been

  1144. blind.

  1145. They were

  1146. busy arguing

  1147. about who

  1148. sinned that

  1149. he got that

  1150. way.

  1151. The Pharisees

  1152. had nothing

  1153. but pride

  1154. and contempt

  1155. and insults

  1156. for that

  1157. man,

  1158. man.

  1159. Especially

  1160. when he

  1161. wouldn't

  1162. cooperate

  1163. with them

  1164. and falsify

  1165. his own

  1166. miraculous

  1167. healing.

  1168. But Jesus

  1169. truly loved

  1170. that man.

  1171. Not only

  1172. did he

  1173. heal him,

  1174. but he

  1175. revealed

  1176. himself to

  1177. him.

  1178. He went

  1179. out and

  1180. found him

  1181. and brought

  1182. him into

  1183. the flock.

  1184. Jesus says,

  1185. I have

  1186. come so

  1187. that people

  1188. like him,

  1189. my sheep,

  1190. may have

  1191. life.

  1192. And not

  1193. just any

  1194. old life,

  1195. not just a

  1196. bare minimum

  1197. disappointment

  1198. filled kind

  1199. of life,

  1200. but life

  1201. to the

  1202. full,

  1203. says Jesus.

  1204. Life the

  1205. way it was

  1206. meant to

  1207. be,

  1208. long ago

  1209. in the

  1210. beginning

  1211. when God

  1212. created us

  1213. for relationship

  1214. with him

  1215. kind of

  1216. life.

  1217. The

  1218. prosperity

  1219. gospel has

  1220. abused this

  1221. verse greatly.

  1222. So I do

  1223. want to say

  1224. a couple

  1225. words about

  1226. that here.

  1227. Jesus is

  1228. not saying

  1229. that he

  1230. came to

  1231. make us

  1232. all rich

  1233. with earthly

  1234. riches.

  1235. That's not

  1236. what life

  1237. to the

  1238. full means.

  1239. Most of

  1240. us know

  1241. that.

  1242. It is

  1243. what some

  1244. people in

  1245. our world

  1246. think of

  1247. when they

  1248. hear this

  1249. verse,

  1250. but not

  1251. God.

  1252. However,

  1253. at the

  1254. same time,

  1255. we shouldn't

  1256. try to

  1257. eliminate all

  1258. possibility of

  1259. material

  1260. blessing

  1261. from this

  1262. promise

  1263. that Jesus

  1264. gave.

  1265. The life

  1266. that Jesus

  1267. has come

  1268. to give

  1269. us may

  1270. include some

  1271. of that

  1272. here and

  1273. now.

  1274. What did

  1275. Paul tell

  1276. Timothy?

  1277. 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 6:17

  1278. chapter 6

  1279. verse 17.

  1280. He said,

  1281. command those

  1282. who are rich

  1283. in this

  1284. present world

  1285. not to be

  1286. arrogant,

  1287. nor to put

  1288. their hope

  1289. in wealth,

  1290. which is so

  1291. uncertain,

  1292. but to

  1293. put their

  1294. hope in

  1295. God,

  1296. who richly

  1297. provides us

  1298. with everything

  1299. for our

  1300. enjoyment.

  1301. You hear

  1302. that?

  1303. He says,

  1304. command them,

  1305. those who are

  1306. rich,

  1307. to do good,

  1308. to be rich

  1309. in good

  1310. deeds,

  1311. and to be

  1312. generous

  1313. and willing

  1314. to share.

  1315. In this

  1316. way,

  1317. those who are

  1318. rich will

  1319. lay up

  1320. treasure for

  1321. themselves as

  1322. a firm

  1323. foundation for

  1324. the coming

  1325. age,

  1326. so that

  1327. they may

  1328. take hold

  1329. of the

  1330. life that

  1331. is truly

  1332. life.

  1333. Notice that

  1334. Paul makes

  1335. it very clear

  1336. that worldly

  1337. wealth,

  1338. at least in

  1339. part,

  1340. is intended

  1341. to meet

  1342. our needs,

  1343. even to

  1344. increase our

  1345. joy,

  1346. so long as

  1347. we receive it

  1348. as a gift

  1349. from God

  1350. that it is.

  1351. But part

  1352. of the

  1353. abundant

  1354. life,

  1355. the full

  1356. life,

  1357. also includes

  1358. being generous

  1359. with whatever

  1360. he has

  1361. given us

  1362. and willing

  1363. to share.

  1364. So life

  1365. to the full

  1366. is not just

  1367. about having

  1368. whatever we

  1369. want or

  1370. having lots

  1371. of money

  1372. or stuff.

  1373. Sometimes

  1374. God will

  1375. provide us

  1376. with that

  1377. out of his

  1378. generosity

  1379. and goodness

  1380. and for our

  1381. enjoyment.

  1382. But maybe

  1383. I could say

  1384. it this way,

  1385. part of

  1386. the fullest

  1387. life that

  1388. God gives

  1389. is learning

  1390. to enjoy

  1391. whatever he

  1392. gives us,

  1393. whether spiritual

  1394. or material,

  1395. as a gift

  1396. from him

  1397. and being

  1398. willing to

  1399. joyfully

  1400. share and

  1401. give away

  1402. to meet

  1403. the needs

  1404. of others

  1405. and to

  1406. bless others.

  1407. So the

  1408. thief cares

  1409. only about

  1410. himself.

  1411. He doesn't

  1412. care what

  1413. it costs

  1414. you.

  1415. He's only

  1416. there to

  1417. take from

  1418. you.

  1419. Jesus

  1420. says,

  1421. it's the

  1422. opposite

  1423. with me.

  1424. I have

  1425. come to

  1426. give to

  1427. you the

  1428. life that

  1429. you need

  1430. and even

  1431. more.

  1432. the

  1433. fullest

  1434. possible

  1435. expression

  1436. of life

  1437. that you

  1438. could

  1439. ever

  1440. have.

  1441. A

  1442. life

  1443. that's

  1444. deep,

  1445. rich,

  1446. vibrant,

  1447. and full.

  1448. That's

  1449. the difference

  1450. between the

  1451. true shepherd

  1452. and the

  1453. phonies,

  1454. the

  1455. imposters,

  1456. the con

  1457. men,

  1458. and the

  1459. thieves.

  1460. Well,

  1461. how do we

  1462. apply all

  1463. this to

  1464. ourselves

  1465. today?

  1466. There's

  1467. so much

  1468. in these

  1469. ten

  1470. verses.

  1471. We could

  1472. find some

  1473. helpful

  1474. wisdom about

  1475. how to

  1476. identify

  1477. dangerous

  1478. spiritual

  1479. imposters

  1480. in churches

  1481. and in

  1482. ministries

  1483. today.

  1484. We could

  1485. focus in

  1486. on that

  1487. very special

  1488. relationship

  1489. between

  1490. shepherd and

  1491. sheep and

  1492. talk about

  1493. how we

  1494. who believe

  1495. in Jesus

  1496. must listen

  1497. to our

  1498. shepherd and

  1499. follow his

  1500. voice and

  1501. obey his

  1502. commands.

  1503. we could

  1504. talk about

  1505. how Jesus,

  1506. our true

  1507. shepherd,

  1508. knows us

  1509. intimately

  1510. and deeply

  1511. exactly what's

  1512. going on in

  1513. our hearts

  1514. and thoughts

  1515. and lives.

  1516. But here's

  1517. what's on my

  1518. heart this

  1519. morning,

  1520. maybe a

  1521. little bit

  1522. of a

  1523. different

  1524. angle.

  1525. I don't

  1526. know if

  1527. any of

  1528. you watched

  1529. the leadership

  1530. debate on

  1531. Thursday night.

  1532. I did.

  1533. I watched

  1534. the major

  1535. party leaders

  1536. trade barbs

  1537. and take

  1538. shots at

  1539. each other.

  1540. all the

  1541. while trying

  1542. to convince

  1543. me why I

  1544. should vote

  1545. for their

  1546. political

  1547. party.

  1548. And I

  1549. couldn't help

  1550. but wonder,

  1551. is this the

  1552. best that

  1553. we've got

  1554. to lead

  1555. our nation

  1556. in the

  1557. coming weeks,

  1558. years?

  1559. They're all

  1560. promising to

  1561. be that

  1562. ideal shepherd,

  1563. leader,

  1564. prime minister

  1565. that Canada

  1566. needs right

  1567. now.

  1568. And don't

  1569. vote for those

  1570. other guys

  1571. because they

  1572. won't keep

  1573. any of their

  1574. promises.

  1575. They've all

  1576. shown that

  1577. they're just

  1578. in it for

  1579. themselves.

  1580. They're all

  1581. saying that

  1582. about each

  1583. other.

  1584. But I

  1585. think we

  1586. see through

  1587. that,

  1588. don't we?

  1589. And we

  1590. know that

  1591. truly they're

  1592. all in it

  1593. for themselves.

  1594. They're all

  1595. playing the

  1596. political game,

  1597. trying to

  1598. say enough

  1599. of what

  1600. people want

  1601. to hear in

  1602. order to

  1603. secure their

  1604. vote and

  1605. hopefully get

  1606. to that

  1607. position of

  1608. greatest

  1609. prominence and

  1610. influence in

  1611. the nation.

  1612. I didn't get

  1613. a sense from

  1614. any of them

  1615. that they

  1616. really,

  1617. truly cared

  1618. about the

  1619. Canadian people

  1620. or really

  1621. understood what

  1622. is best for

  1623. the people

  1624. that they're

  1625. seeking to

  1626. govern and

  1627. lead.

  1628. This one

  1629. over here

  1630. would take

  1631. half of my

  1632. hard-earned

  1633. money if I

  1634. was super

  1635. rich and

  1636. then vilify

  1637. me as a

  1638. greedy

  1639. billionaire.

  1640. That one

  1641. over there

  1642. thinks it's

  1643. good for

  1644. women to

  1645. continue to

  1646. have the

  1647. choice to

  1648. kill me if

  1649. I'm a

  1650. seven-month-old

  1651. baby in

  1652. my mother's

  1653. womb.

  1654. Most of

  1655. them think

  1656. that I

  1657. should lose

  1658. my job if

  1659. I'm employed

  1660. by the

  1661. irredeemable

  1662. oil extraction

  1663. industry.

  1664. Almost all

  1665. of them seem

  1666. to believe that

  1667. the greatest

  1668. threat to

  1669. mankind is

  1670. climate change

  1671. caused by

  1672. human pollution.

  1673. I mean,

  1674. seriously,

  1675. is this the

  1676. best that

  1677. we've got to

  1678. lead our

  1679. nation?

  1680. I don't know

  1681. about you,

  1682. but a deep

  1683. longing was

  1684. stirred up in

  1685. my soul

  1686. from watching

  1687. this for the

  1688. true shepherd,

  1689. the one who

  1690. truly cares

  1691. about me

  1692. and knows

  1693. what's going

  1694. on in my

  1695. life,

  1696. the one who

  1697. only ever

  1698. speaks the

  1699. truth and

  1700. always keeps

  1701. his promises

  1702. 100%,

  1703. the one to

  1704. whom I

  1705. belong,

  1706. the one who

  1707. will shepherd

  1708. his flock

  1709. with justice

  1710. and provide

  1711. for their

  1712. every need.

  1713. God's flock,

  1714. the one who

  1715. gives life

  1716. to the

  1717. full,

  1718. something that

  1719. can never

  1720. be taken

  1721. away.

  1722. Jesus is

  1723. the true

  1724. shepherd of

  1725. God's flock,

  1726. God's people,

  1727. and the good

  1728. news is this,

  1729. he is not

  1730. done shepherding

  1731. his flock

  1732. yet.

  1733. He's coming

  1734. back,

  1735. and when he

  1736. does,

  1737. he will lead,

  1738. he will shepherd,

  1739. and he will

  1740. govern like

  1741. the Pharisees

  1742. never could,

  1743. like all of

  1744. those people

  1745. on Thursday

  1746. night never

  1747. can and

  1748. never will,

  1749. and his

  1750. kingdom will

  1751. last forever.

  1752. Do you know

  1753. the true

  1754. shepherd,

  1755. the one who

  1756. deeply cares

  1757. for you?

  1758. Are you one

  1759. of his sheep?

  1760. If you are,

  1761. you have this

  1762. hope and this

  1763. confidence that

  1764. Jesus gives,

  1765. and if not,

  1766. then the best

  1767. you've got are

  1768. the men and

  1769. women you

  1770. saw on Thursday

  1771. night.

  1772. I'll have

  1773. Jesus as my

  1774. shepherd.

  1775. Will you?

  1776. Let's pray.

  1777. Father in

  1778. heaven,

  1779. thank you.

  1780. Thank you

  1781. again for

  1782. sending Jesus.

  1783. Thank you

  1784. that you love

  1785. us,

  1786. that you

  1787. know us,

  1788. thank you

  1789. that you

  1790. have come

  1791. to lead

  1792. us,

  1793. to guide

  1794. us,

  1795. to help

  1796. us,

  1797. to heal

  1798. us,

  1799. and all

  1800. those wonderful

  1801. things that

  1802. we heard.

  1803. We long

  1804. for that

  1805. day when

  1806. Jesus will

  1807. return.

  1808. Help us to

  1809. have our hope

  1810. and our

  1811. confidence and

  1812. our focus

  1813. on that,

  1814. even as we

  1815. go to the

  1816. ballot boxes

  1817. this coming

  1818. weekend.

  1819. We ask

  1820. this in

  1821. Jesus' name.

  1822. Amen.

  1823. Amen.

  1824. Amen.

  1825. Amen.

  1826. Amen.

  1827. Amen.

  1828. Amen.

  1829. Amen.

  1830. Amen.

  1831. Amen.

  1832. Amen.

  1833. Amen.

  1834. Amen.

  1835. Amen.
