  1. If you have your Bible with you, please open it up to John chapter 10.

    John 10 chapter mention

  2. John chapter 10, we are coming down to verse 22 here, a new section.

    John 10 chapter mention

  3. John chapter 22, John chapter 10 verse 22.

    John 10:22

  4. Let me read the first couple of verses for us this morning.

  5. Then came the festival of dedication at Jerusalem.

  6. It was winter, and Jesus was in the temple courts, walking in Solomon's colonnade.

  7. So John now gives us a sense of the timeline here in his account of the story of Jesus.

  8. And the last clear indication that we had of that was back in chapter 7 verse 1,

  9. where he told us it was the Feast of Tabernacles.

  10. And it seems that most of what's happened in between then and now happened closer to the Feast of Tabernacles.

  11. But now John kind of fast forwards a few months.

  12. The Feast of Tabernacles happened in the fall.

  13. And this is now another festival, the Festival of Dedication happening in Jerusalem,

  14. which happens in kind of our calendar in December.

  15. And there's another major event that comes in the story of Jesus here.

  16. So I'm going to just share with you a little bit of what the Festival of Dedication is about.

  17. It's not a festival that was commanded in the Old Testament.

  18. In fact, it only started being celebrated 200 years or so before Jesus.

  19. It's known today as Hanukkah.

  20. And it marked the date that the Jews revolted against an oppressive ruler,

  21. the Syrian Antiochus Epiphanes.

  22. They regained independence.

  23. They recaptured the temple and they reconsecrated it and rededicated it to God.

  24. And then every year after that, they began to celebrate this.

  25. It was also called the Feast of Lights.

  26. There's lots more that could be said about it, but that's the gist.

  27. And John tells us that this is the occasion of the next part of the story of Jesus.

  28. This festival is on and the people, again, as they usually do,

  29. all kind of converge on Jerusalem to celebrate and mark the festival.

  30. It's now winter.

  31. And Jesus, John tells us, was in the temple courts walking in Solomon's colonnade.

  32. That was kind of a covered part of the temple, like a portico with large pillars.

  33. So Jesus is walking there.

  34. And John tells us in verse 24,

  35. The Jews who were there gathered around Jesus, saying,

  36. How long will you keep us in suspense?

  37. If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.

  38. This is somewhat amusing to read in the original language.

  39. A little more literally, they say,

  40. How long will you take away our lives?

  41. Tell us plainly if you are the Christ, the Messiah.

  42. In other words, stop wasting our time and just tell us.

  43. Are you the Messiah or aren't you?

  44. Verse 25,

  45. Jesus answered,

  46. I did tell you,

  47. but you do not believe.

  48. The works I do in my Father's name testify about me,

  49. but you do not believe because you are not my sheep.

  50. My sheep listen to my voice.

  51. I know them,

  52. and they follow me.

  53. So the Jews gathered around him.

  54. They're asking Jesus to tell them plainly whether he is the Messiah.

  55. And Jesus says,

  56. I already told you,

  57. and you do not believe.

  58. Notice that it's the present tense,

  59. like you do not believe in me.

  60. Even now, in this moment,

  61. you still do not believe.

  62. And we might be tempted to think,

  63. well,

  64. that's a pretty reasonable question

  65. that they're asking.

  66. Like,

  67. Jesus,

  68. we've been waiting patiently for a long time now.

  69. We've been following your story.

  70. How long are you going to leave us wondering?

  71. But judging by what Jesus says to them in response,

  72. this is not the kind of question that they're asking.

  73. Jesus makes it crystal clear.

  74. They have already heard the things that he's been saying.

  75. I did tell you.

  76. They have already seen the works that he's been doing,

  77. the miracles,

  78. the signs,

  79. the things I do in my Father's name.

  80. They bear witness about me.

  81. And yet they are still refusing to believe Jesus.

  82. More likely,

  83. this question that they're asking

  84. is an attempt to subtly pressure Jesus

  85. into making the claim outright,

  86. publicly,

  87. to be the Messiah.

  88. And they're hoping to use that against him.

  89. to accuse him,

  90. to go after him.

  91. Jesus says to them,

  92. I did tell you.

  93. Now,

  94. it's not as though Jesus has publicly said,

  95. I am the Messiah.

  96. He did say that,

  97. pretty much word for word,

  98. in private,

  99. to various individuals.

  100. the woman at the well,

  101. in John chapter 4.

    John 4 chapter mention

  102. He said,

  103. not quite in word for word,

  104. but basically said,

  105. I am the Messiah to his disciples,

  106. in Matthew 16.

  107. He said,

  108. what equates to,

  109. I am the Messiah,

  110. to the man who had been born blind,

  111. when he tells him that he's the Son of Man,

  112. just a couple chapters ago.

  113. But Jesus has never publicly,

  114. and openly declared word for word,

  115. I am the Messiah.

  116. In the more public settings,

  117. he often uses metaphors,

  118. and analogies.

  119. But to anybody who's been listening,

  120. it's pretty obvious,

  121. that in all these metaphors,

  122. and analogies,

  123. Jesus is basically saying,

  124. I am the Messiah.

  125. He's told them that he's been sent from heaven.

  126. He's told them that he speaks for his father,

  127. God.

  128. He's told them that he's the Son of Man,

  129. and all the messianic meaning,

  130. that goes with that,

  131. we've talked about.

  132. He's told them that he's the bread of life,

  133. the bread of heaven,

  134. the light of the world.

  135. Back in John chapter 5,

    John 5 chapter mention

  136. he's told them that he's the one,

  137. who will judge at the end,

  138. with the authority given to him by God.

  139. And now here in John chapter 10,

    John 10 chapter mention

  140. he's told them that he is the true shepherd,

  141. of God's flock.

  142. The one who will shepherd,

  143. and lead God's sheep.

  144. Just like King David,

  145. was God's chosen shepherd,

  146. and king long ago.

  147. So,

  148. I did tell you,

  149. says Jesus.

  150. Not only did I tell you,

  151. but the works that I am doing,

  152. in my father's name,

  153. testify about me.

  154. You want some evidence?

  155. Some proof that I am the Messiah?

  156. Look at the things that I've been doing.

  157. The miracles,

  158. the healings,

  159. the signs.

  160. They're things only God can do.

  161. You've heard all I've done,

  162. and you've seen all I've done,

  163. all I've done,

  164. and yet you do not believe me.

  165. And then Jesus goes a step further,

  166. in verse 26,

  167. and tells them why they don't believe.

  168. You do not believe,

  169. because you are not my sheep.

  170. Or as some translations say,

  171. because you are not of,

  172. you are not among my sheep.

  173. We're going to leave that one alone for today.

  174. It's not the first time we've heard something like that,

  175. that Jesus said,

  176. and it requires careful consideration.

  177. We might come back to it in the weeks ahead.

  178. But for today,

  179. it's enough simply to say,

  180. the reason they refuse to believe in Jesus,

  181. even though they've seen his works,

  182. and heard his words,

  183. is that they are not his sheep.

  184. Jesus then goes on to tell us,

  185. what is true about his sheep,

  186. again,

  187. here in verse 27.

  188. Three things.

  189. He says,

  190. my sheep listen to my voice.

  191. I know them,

  192. and they follow me.

  193. They listen to my voice.

  194. And here,

  195. listening implies more than just listening.

  196. It implies faith.

  197. It implies obedience.

  198. It's not just that they hear what Jesus is saying,

  199. like these Jews that he's talking to right now.

  200. It's that they listen.

  201. They really listen to him.

  202. They accept his words.

  203. They obey them.

  204. They follow me,

  205. says Jesus.

  206. They do what I ask them to do.

  207. They recognize me as their leader,

  208. their shepherd,

  209. their Messiah.

  210. Verse 28.

  211. Jesus goes on.

  212. He says,

  213. I give them,

  214. that's my sheep,

  215. I give my sheep eternal life,

  216. and they shall never perish.

  217. No one will snatch them out of my hand.

  218. Here it is again.

  219. Jesus declares plainly

  220. that he will give eternal life

  221. to his people.

  222. Life that lasts forever.

  223. He says that for his sheep,

  224. they will never perish.

  225. And this translation in English

  226. is a little bit flat.

  227. Literally,

  228. it's,

  229. they will not ever perish

  230. unto the ages.

  231. It's a very emphatic way of saying it.

  232. They will live forever and ever

  233. and never.

  234. Not die,

  235. but perish.

  236. He's not saying they will never die,

  237. but rather that he will give to them

  238. everlasting life.

  239. Life that goes on forever.

  240. And we know from other places

  241. in this gospel

  242. that that everlasting part

  243. of this life

  244. will begin after they die.

  245. When Jesus,

  246. as he said earlier,

  247. raises them

  248. back to life from the dead

  249. at the last day.

  250. And we'll hear more about the resurrection

  251. in the chapter ahead.

  252. I give them eternal life

  253. and they shall never perish.

  254. No one will snatch them

  255. out of my hand.

  256. I love this statement

  257. that Jesus makes.

  258. This is Jesus' way of saying,

  259. you see these sheep of mine,

  260. these followers of mine,

  261. you can't touch them.

  262. Let's think about these words.

  263. These words about snatching the sheep

  264. take us back to what Jesus said

  265. a few months earlier,

  266. earlier in chapter 10.

  267. He was telling us there,

  268. really likening the Pharisees

  269. to thieves and robbers.

  270. Talking about how

  271. the true shepherd uses the gate,

  272. but those who aren't

  273. the true shepherd,

  274. they go in another way.

  275. Like they climb over the wall

  276. to try and snatch the sheep.

  277. He talked about how

  278. thieves and robbers

  279. only really come around

  280. for one purpose.

  281. To steal.

  282. To kill.

  283. To destroy.

  284. They come to snatch

  285. the sheep for themselves.

  286. To steal them away

  287. from their true shepherd.

  288. He also likened

  289. the religious leaders,

  290. the Pharisees,

  291. to the wolf.

  292. He talked about

  293. how the wolf comes around

  294. and when he does,

  295. the hired hand runs away

  296. and then the wolf

  297. attacks the sheep.

  298. That's actually the same word

  299. for snatch.

  300. It literally means

  301. to make off

  302. with someone's property

  303. by attacking,

  304. by seizing,

  305. by stealing,

  306. carrying off,

  307. dragging away.

  308. And here Jesus says,

  309. no one will snatch them.

  310. my sheep

  311. from my hand.

  312. And to really appreciate this,

  313. I think we need to put ourselves

  314. as best we can

  315. in the shoes

  316. of Jesus' disciples

  317. right now.

  318. Imagine that you're

  319. one of them.

  320. You're standing there

  321. right now

  322. in Solomon's portico

  323. watching this unfold

  324. between Jesus

  325. and these Jews,

  326. probably many of them

  327. Pharisees

  328. or religious leaders.

  329. here in this moment,

  330. the sparks are flying

  331. between Jesus

  332. and the religious leaders.

  333. They want Jesus dead.

  334. They hate him.

  335. They've been plotting

  336. and scheming

  337. for some time now

  338. about how to take

  339. this guy out.

  340. How do you think

  341. the disciples of Jesus

  342. are feeling right now

  343. in the midst of this?

  344. Do you think

  345. they feel safe?

  346. Do you think

  347. they feel safe?

  348. their master,

  349. who they know

  350. is the Messiah,

  351. is a wanted man.

  352. And he's a little bit

  353. outnumbered,

  354. it seems.

  355. Even though he's managed

  356. to avoid arrest

  357. so far,

  358. even though he's been able

  359. to outmaneuver

  360. the Pharisees

  361. in all of these

  362. public encounters

  363. up to this point,

  364. things are continuing

  365. to heat up.

  366. the tension is rising

  367. between Jesus

  368. and the religious leaders.

  369. In fact,

  370. in just the next chapter

  371. after Lazarus dies,

  372. Jesus will say

  373. to his disciples,

  374. let's go back

  375. to Judea,

  376. to Bethany,

  377. the village of Lazarus,

  378. which is like

  379. right next door

  380. to Jerusalem.

  381. And what does

  382. the disciples say

  383. when Jesus says

  384. this to them?

  385. They say,

  386. but Rabbi,

  387. a short while ago,

  388. the Jews there

  389. tried to stone you.

  390. Like,

  391. we can't go back there.

  392. It's not safe.

  393. Thomas,

  394. one of Jesus' disciples,

  395. actually said,

  396. great,

  397. let's go

  398. and we'll all die

  399. with him.

  400. So what's unfolding

  401. right now

  402. that we're hearing

  403. is the reason

  404. why the disciples

  405. are afraid.

  406. They don't feel safe.

  407. this situation

  408. between Jesus

  409. and the Jews,

  410. the Pharisees,

  411. the religious leaders,

  412. it feels dangerous.

  413. And yet,

  414. what does Jesus say

  415. in the midst of all this?

  416. He says,

  417. no one

  418. will snatch

  419. my sheep

  420. out of my hand.

  421. This is a word

  422. both for his disciples

  423. and for his opponents.

  424. to his disciples,

  425. it means,

  426. don't worry about them.

  427. Don't fret about them.

  428. They will not get you.

  429. Your life

  430. is in my hand

  431. and it's safe

  432. in my hand.

  433. This is a word

  434. for his disciples.

  435. But it's also a word

  436. to these Jews

  437. who aren't his sheep,

  438. Jesus' opponents.

  439. to them,

  440. it means,

  441. you can try

  442. your hardest

  443. to go after

  444. my sheep,

  445. my people.

  446. You can try

  447. to draw them away.

  448. You can try

  449. to poison them

  450. against me.

  451. You can try

  452. to hurt them.

  453. But no matter

  454. how hard you try,

  455. you will fail.

  456. No one

  457. can snatch them

  458. from my hand.

  459. No one

  460. can steal them

  461. away from me.

  462. They are my sheep.

  463. I am their shepherd

  464. and they are secure

  465. in my hand.

  466. And then Jesus

  467. takes it a step

  468. beyond that.

  469. In case there's

  470. any doubt,

  471. verse 29,

  472. Jesus says,

  473. my father

  474. who has given

  475. them to me

  476. is greater

  477. than all.

  478. No one

  479. can snatch

  480. them out

  481. of my father's

  482. hand.

  483. I love this.

  484. It reminds me

  485. of all those

  486. silly little arguments

  487. I had with other

  488. kids at the playground.

  489. background.

  490. This is probably

  491. more a thing

  492. for boys,

  493. but maybe you

  494. remember those

  495. little things.

  496. Like,

  497. you better stop

  498. trying to hurt

  499. my friend.

  500. I'm going to

  501. punch you

  502. in the face.

  503. Well,

  504. if you do that,

  505. I'm going to

  506. get my dad

  507. and he's going

  508. to come

  509. and he's going

  510. to punch

  511. you in the head.

  512. Well,

  513. then I'll get

  514. my dad

  515. and my dad

  516. knows karate

  517. and he'll

  518. block your dad's

  519. punch and

  520. punch him

  521. right out.

  522. All the things

  523. that we said

  524. to each other

  525. when we were

  526. kids,

  527. at least us

  528. boys.

  529. this is a

  530. little bit

  531. like that,

  532. but this is

  533. the holy

  534. and righteous

  535. version of

  536. that.

  537. You can

  538. try to

  539. snatch them

  540. out of my

  541. hand,

  542. but let me

  543. tell you a

  544. little secret.

  545. My father,

  546. God,

  547. is holding

  548. them too

  549. in his

  550. hand.

  551. And he's

  552. the greatest

  553. that there

  554. is.

  555. He's the

  556. strongest,

  557. he's the

  558. most powerful.

  559. Nobody

  560. can snatch

  561. them out

  562. of his

  563. hand.

  564. I hold

  565. my sheep

  566. safe and

  567. secure and

  568. at the

  569. same time,

  570. so does

  571. he.

  572. And then

  573. Jesus says

  574. it in

  575. verse 30.

  576. I and

  577. the father

  578. are one.

  579. I love

  580. it.

  581. The ultimate

  582. statement

  583. of unity

  584. between

  585. father and

  586. son said

  587. by anyone

  588. else,

  589. absolute

  590. blasphemy,

  591. but by

  592. the divine

  593. son of

  594. God,

  595. the word

  596. who became

  597. flesh.

  598. This is

  599. the truth

  600. about who

  601. Jesus is.

  602. It's as

  603. though Jesus

  604. is saying,

  605. not only do

  606. we work

  607. together,

  608. my father

  609. and I,

  610. but we

  611. are

  612. together

  613. one.

  614. One

  615. and the

  616. same

  617. God.

  618. Again,

  619. his Jewish

  620. opponents

  621. picked up

  622. stones

  623. to stone

  624. him.

  625. But Jesus

  626. said to

  627. them,

  628. I have

  629. shown you

  630. many good

  631. works from

  632. the father.

  633. For which

  634. of these

  635. do you

  636. stone me?

  637. We are

  638. not stoning

  639. you for

  640. any good

  641. work,

  642. they replied,

  643. but for

  644. blasphemy,

  645. because you,

  646. a mere man,

  647. claim to be

  648. God.

  649. God,

  650. the Jews

  651. who were

  652. there that

  653. day understood

  654. perfectly well

  655. what Jesus

  656. was claiming

  657. when he

  658. said,

  659. I and the

  660. father are

  661. one.

  662. It was a

  663. claim to

  664. share in

  665. the same

  666. divine nature

  667. as God,

  668. to be

  669. united,

  670. to be

  671. one with

  672. God,

  673. the father.

  674. I asked a

  675. little earlier

  676. if you thought

  677. the disciples

  678. of Jesus

  679. felt safe.

  680. how about

  681. now?

  682. Jesus'

  683. opponents

  684. now have

  685. stones in

  686. their hand

  687. and they're

  688. ready to

  689. let fly.

  690. I can only

  691. imagine the

  692. disciples'

  693. hearts probably

  694. pounding,

  695. racing,

  696. and their

  697. thoughts,

  698. what do we

  699. do?

  700. Do we run?

  701. Where are we

  702. going to meet

  703. up later with

  704. Jesus if we

  705. get away?

  706. What do we

  707. do?

  708. Well, for the

  709. moment, Jesus

  710. manages to hold

  711. the stones at

  712. bay simply

  713. by speaking.

  714. He asks them

  715. a question.

  716. He calls

  717. them to

  718. consider again

  719. the good

  720. works that

  721. he has been

  722. doing.

  723. Could he

  724. be doing

  725. such things,

  726. the things

  727. of God,

  728. while at

  729. the same

  730. time blaspheming

  731. God and

  732. trying to steal

  733. his glory?

  734. But sadly,

  735. Jesus'

  736. opponents don't

  737. seem to care

  738. too much about

  739. the countless

  740. signs and

  741. miracles that

  742. he's been

  743. doing.

  744. It's just

  745. like earlier,

  746. the Pharisees,

  747. they didn't

  748. give a rip

  749. about the

  750. man who

  751. had been

  752. born blind

  753. that was

  754. now healed.

  755. They're

  756. focused on

  757. one thing,

  758. taking Jesus

  759. out.

  760. Verse 33,

  761. we are not

  762. stoning you

  763. for any

  764. good work,

  765. but for

  766. blasphemy

  767. because you,

  768. a mere

  769. man,

  770. claim to

  771. be God.

  772. This is at

  773. the heart of

  774. the issue.

  775. In the eyes

  776. of these

  777. Jews,

  778. Jesus is

  779. just a

  780. man,

  781. a mere

  782. man,

  783. and therefore

  784. they accuse

  785. him of

  786. blasphemy,

  787. despite the

  788. fact that he

  789. is doing

  790. the things

  791. that only

  792. God can

  793. do.

  794. So the

  795. stones are

  796. ready to

  797. fly at

  798. Jesus.

  799. And let's

  800. imagine for a

  801. moment again

  802. that you are

  803. one of his

  804. disciples.

  805. Let me ask

  806. you again,

  807. do you feel

  808. safe in this

  809. moment?

  810. And yet,

  811. even though

  812. they might not

  813. feel safe,

  814. they are

  815. safe.

  816. even though

  817. they might

  818. feel threatened

  819. and in

  820. danger,

  821. are they

  822. in danger?

  823. No.

  824. What did

  825. Jesus just

  826. say?

  827. I give

  828. my sheep

  829. eternal

  830. life,

  831. and they

  832. shall never

  833. perish.

  834. No one

  835. will snatch

  836. them out of

  837. my hand.

  838. My Father

  839. who has given

  840. them to me

  841. is greater

  842. than all.

  843. No one

  844. can snatch

  845. them out

  846. of my

  847. Father's

  848. hand.

  849. what's the

  850. worst they

  851. can do?

  852. Pelt us

  853. with stones?

  854. Destroy our

  855. reputations?

  856. Make life

  857. miserable for

  858. us and our

  859. families?

  860. Arrest us?

  861. Kill us?

  862. I give

  863. them eternal

  864. life,

  865. and they

  866. shall never

  867. perish.

  868. snatch.

  869. No one

  870. can snatch

  871. them out

  872. of my

  873. hand.

  874. Even

  875. though in

  876. this moment

  877. the disciples

  878. do not

  879. feel safe

  880. and secure,

  881. the truth

  882. is they

  883. are,

  884. because Jesus

  885. holds their

  886. lives in

  887. his hand,

  888. and he is

  889. very capable.

  890. He is the

  891. good shepherd.

  892. He will

  893. lay down

  894. his life

  895. for his

  896. sheep,

  897. and after

  898. rising from

  899. the dead,

  900. Jesus,

  901. just as he

  902. promised,

  903. will raise

  904. all of us

  905. who believe

  906. back to life

  907. from the

  908. dead,

  909. never to

  910. die again.

  911. And so

  912. even if they

  913. kill us,

  914. through Jesus,

  915. our shepherd,

  916. we win.

  917. We have

  918. life

  919. forever.

  920. he will

  921. raise us

  922. up.

  923. And so

  924. these words

  925. of Jesus

  926. should put

  927. a boldness

  928. and a

  929. confidence

  930. in our

  931. hearts.

  932. They should

  933. give us

  934. peace.

  935. Our

  936. ultimate

  937. hope

  938. in

  939. Jesus,

  940. through

  941. Jesus,

  942. we are

  943. untouchable.

  944. Nobody

  945. can take

  946. it away

  947. from us,

  948. this life.

  949. no one

  950. can snatch

  951. us

  952. from our

  953. Savior's

  954. hand.

  955. And there

  956. are a couple

  957. other places

  958. where this

  959. comes out

  960. so wonderfully.

  961. I have to

  962. highlight a

  963. couple of

  964. them.

  965. Luke

    Luke 21:16

  966. chapter 21

  967. verse 16,

  968. Jesus is

  969. talking to

  970. his disciples

  971. there about

  972. how things

  973. are going

  974. to be at

  975. the very

  976. end of

  977. the world.

  978. And he

  979. says this

  980. to them,

  981. he says,

  982. you will

  983. be betrayed

  984. even by

  985. parents,

  986. brothers and

  987. sisters,

  988. relatives and

  989. friends,

  990. and they

  991. will put

  992. some of

  993. you to

  994. death.

  995. Everyone

  996. will hate

  997. you because

  998. of me,

  999. but not

  1000. a hair

  1001. of your

  1002. head

  1003. will perish.

  1004. Stand

  1005. firm

  1006. and you

  1007. will win

  1008. life.

  1009. I love

  1010. that.

  1011. In the

  1012. same breath,

  1013. Jesus says,

  1014. they will put

  1015. some of you

  1016. to death,

  1017. but not a

  1018. hair of

  1019. your head

  1020. will perish.

  1021. Nothing,

  1022. no one

  1023. can snatch

  1024. my sheep

  1025. from my

  1026. hand.

  1027. Or take

  1028. the words

  1029. of the

  1030. apostle Paul

  1031. in the

  1032. beloved

  1033. passage,

  1034. Romans

    Romans 8:35

  1035. chapter 8

  1036. verse 35.

  1037. Who shall

  1038. separate us

  1039. from the

  1040. love of

  1041. Christ?

  1042. Shall

  1043. trouble

  1044. or

  1045. hardship?

  1046. How about

  1047. persecution?

  1048. Or what

  1049. about famine?

  1050. Nakedness?

  1051. Danger?

  1052. What about

  1053. the sword?

  1054. As it is

  1055. written,

  1056. for your

  1057. sake,

  1058. we face

  1059. death all

  1060. day long.

  1061. We are

  1062. considered as

  1063. sheep to be

  1064. slaughtered.

  1065. no,

  1066. in all

  1067. these things,

  1068. in all

  1069. these things,

  1070. we are

  1071. more than

  1072. conquerors

  1073. through him

  1074. who loved

  1075. us.

  1076. For I'm

  1077. convinced,

  1078. said Paul,

  1079. that neither

  1080. death,

  1081. do you hear

  1082. that?

  1083. Neither

  1084. death

  1085. nor life,

  1086. neither

  1087. angels

  1088. nor demons,

  1089. neither the

  1090. present nor

  1091. the future,

  1092. nor any

  1093. powers,

  1094. neither height

  1095. nor depth,

  1096. nor anything

  1097. else in all

  1098. creation will

  1099. be able to

  1100. separate us

  1101. from the

  1102. love of

  1103. God that

  1104. is in

  1105. Christ Jesus,

  1106. our Lord.

  1107. Nothing,

  1108. not even

  1109. death,

  1110. can separate

  1111. us from

  1112. the love

  1113. of our

  1114. Lord Jesus.

  1115. If you

  1116. belong to

  1117. Jesus,

  1118. no one

  1119. and nothing

  1120. can snatch

  1121. you from

  1122. his hand.

  1123. So how

  1124. do these

  1125. words speak

  1126. to us

  1127. today?

  1128. Well,

  1129. this good

  1130. promise of

  1131. Jesus is

  1132. only for

  1133. his sheep.

  1134. So let me

  1135. ask you,

  1136. are you one

  1137. of them?

  1138. Do you

  1139. have Jesus

  1140. as your

  1141. shepherd?

  1142. And if

  1143. not,

  1144. I urge you

  1145. to come to

  1146. Jesus to

  1147. repent of

  1148. your sins and

  1149. to believe in

  1150. his name.

  1151. him?

  1152. And if you

  1153. do,

  1154. his promise

  1155. is that

  1156. you will

  1157. be saved

  1158. and you

  1159. will have

  1160. him as

  1161. your good

  1162. shepherd.

  1163. Most of

  1164. you here,

  1165. I think,

  1166. have already

  1167. done that.

  1168. And so for

  1169. you,

  1170. this morning I

  1171. have a

  1172. different

  1173. question.

  1174. As you

  1175. look around

  1176. at what's

  1177. happening in

  1178. our world

  1179. today,

  1180. do you

  1181. feel safe?

  1182. Do you

  1183. feel safe?

  1184. Are you

  1185. worried?

  1186. Are you

  1187. fretting?

  1188. Are you

  1189. panicked?

  1190. Like Jesus'

  1191. disciples are

  1192. in this

  1193. moment.

  1194. Do you

  1195. feel safe?

  1196. If Jesus

  1197. is your

  1198. shepherd,

  1199. you are.

  1200. Let your

  1201. heart hear

  1202. these words

  1203. one more

  1204. time.

  1205. I give

  1206. my sheep

  1207. eternal

  1208. life.

  1209. They shall

  1210. never perish.

  1211. No one

  1212. will snatch

  1213. them out

  1214. of my

  1215. hand.

  1216. my hope

  1217. and my

  1218. prayer is

  1219. that these

  1220. words will

  1221. sink deep

  1222. into our

  1223. hearts.

  1224. And that

  1225. as a result

  1226. we will have

  1227. peace.

  1228. We will have

  1229. a calm in

  1230. our hearts.

  1231. Even as we

  1232. look out at

  1233. what's going

  1234. on in our

  1235. world today,

  1236. we are going

  1237. to be just

  1238. fine.

  1239. We are in

  1240. the care of

  1241. our Lord

  1242. Jesus.

  1243. We are in

  1244. the care of

  1245. God,

  1246. the Father.

  1247. Father,

  1248. we don't

  1249. need to

  1250. hide in

  1251. our homes.

  1252. We don't

  1253. need to

  1254. worry about

  1255. what will

  1256. happen if

  1257. we can

  1258. have confidence,

  1259. we can have

  1260. boldness,

  1261. because this

  1262. is the end

  1263. of our

  1264. story.

  1265. And my

  1266. hope and

  1267. prayer is

  1268. that that

  1269. will enable

  1270. us to

  1271. continue to

  1272. reach out to

  1273. the people in

  1274. this community,

  1275. to love

  1276. them, to

  1277. invite them

  1278. into our

  1279. homes, to

  1280. go over to

  1281. their homes,

  1282. knock on the

  1283. door,

  1284. share with

  1285. them the

  1286. love of

  1287. Jesus and

  1288. the truth

  1289. of Jesus.

  1290. Let's

  1291. pray.

  1292. Lord Jesus,

  1293. thank you so

  1294. much for

  1295. these words.

  1296. You are the

  1297. ultimate.

  1298. Father, you

  1299. are the

  1300. ultimate, the

  1301. one true

  1302. God.

  1303. Put our

  1304. hearts at

  1305. rest, we

  1306. ask.

  1307. you know

  1308. the things

  1309. that we've

  1310. been thinking

  1311. about this

  1312. week, you

  1313. know the

  1314. news articles

  1315. that we've

  1316. read, you

  1317. know the

  1318. media posts

  1319. that we've

  1320. seen.

  1321. Put our

  1322. hearts at

  1323. rest, Lord,

  1324. with these

  1325. words.

  1326. Thank you

  1327. for an

  1328. unshakable hope

  1329. and confidence

  1330. that will

  1331. come true

  1332. when you

  1333. return.

  1334. Lord.

  1335. We pray this

  1336. in your

  1337. name.

  1338. Amen.
