  1. Jesus is many things to us.

  2. He's our Savior.

  3. He's our Messiah, our King.

  4. He's the Son of God.

  5. He's the Son of Man.

  6. We've been learning over the last little while through John's Gospel

  7. about how He is our Good Shepherd

  8. and the gate,

  9. the way,

  10. the truth,

  11. the life,

  12. the resurrection,

  13. the light of the world.

  14. God's provision from heaven,

  15. the Word who became flesh and dwelt among us,

  16. the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.

  17. He is so precious

  18. and He is many things to us.

  19. But this morning as we come to the Lord's table,

  20. we want to consider how Jesus is our High Priest.

  21. The author of Hebrews is the one who in his letter to the Hebrews

  22. has the most to say about this.

  23. So we're going to be looking at a few different places in his letter to the Hebrews

  24. to focus a little more on how Jesus is our High Priest.

  25. The author of Hebrews first brings this up in Hebrews chapter 2,

    Hebrews 2:14–17

  26. verse 14 to 17.

  27. He says this,

  28. Since the children have flesh and blood,

  29. he too shared in their humanity,

  30. so that by his death,

  31. he might break the power of him who holds the power of death,

  32. that is, the devil,

  33. and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

  34. For surely it is not angels he helps,

  35. but Abraham's descendants.

  36. For this reason,

  37. he had to be made like them,

  38. fully human in every way,

  39. in order that he might become a merciful

  40. and faithful High Priest

  41. in service to God,

  42. and that he might make atonement for the sins

  43. of the people.

  44. The author of Hebrews has a way of saying a lot

  45. about everything in very few words,

  46. and he doesn't usually stick to just one topic at a time.

  47. He weaves his topics all together

  48. and expands upon all of them,

  49. all the way through his letter.

  50. So there'll be lots that we skip over today

  51. in order to trace out this theme of Jesus is our High Priest.

  52. The first thing that we learn

  53. is that Jesus came to share in our humanity.

  54. John said it at the beginning of his Gospel,

  55. that the Word who was with God and was God

  56. became flesh and dwelt among us.

  57. This is the author of Hebrews saying the same thing in his own words.

  58. He too shared in their humanity.

  59. Just as the children have flesh and blood,

  60. so he too, Jesus, came to have flesh and blood.

  61. So Jesus, verse 17,

  62. continues on with this thought.

  63. For this reason, he had to be made like them,

  64. fully human in every way.

  65. So Jesus was not just partly,

  66. not just outwardly human.

  67. He was not just flesh and blood exterior or body

  68. with divine insides.

  69. No.

  70. The author of Hebrews says that he had to be made

  71. like us in every way,

  72. like his brothers in every respect,

  73. in all things,

  74. fully human.

  75. Why?

  76. Well, there's multiple reasons given,

  77. but the one we want to see this morning

  78. is in verse 17.

  79. For this reason,

  80. he had to be made like them,

  81. fully human in every way,

  82. in order that he might become

  83. a merciful and faithful high priest

  84. in service to God,

  85. and that he might make atonement

  86. for the sins of the people.

  87. The high priest in the Old Testament

  88. was the go-between,

  89. the one who would offer sacrifices

  90. to atone for the sins of the people.

  91. Our sin and our guilt is an awful thing.

  92. It makes us unworthy

  93. even to come near to God's presence.

  94. It makes us unworthy

  95. even to speak to God on our own.

  96. And so God instituted a priesthood.

  97. Men who were to live especially pure

  98. and holy and righteous lives,

  99. and who would stand in the gap

  100. between God and people,

  101. who would speak to God

  102. on behalf of the people,

  103. who would offer sacrifices

  104. of atonement for the people.

  105. The high priest was like a representative.

  106. He represented the people to God.

  107. And in order to do this job,

  108. you have to be one of the people.

  109. You might think of it like an ambassador

  110. for foreign affairs.

  111. How can you be an ambassador

  112. for your country

  113. if you're not even a citizen

  114. of that country?

  115. You can't.

  116. It's a similar kind of thing here.

  117. The only way to carry out

  118. this needed service of priest

  119. is to be one of the people

  120. whom you serve.

  121. And as the author of Hebrews

  122. will tell us all throughout this book,

  123. the priests who descended from Aaron

  124. and Levi

  125. could only do so much for the people.

  126. There was need for a better,

  127. a greater high priest

  128. than could ever come

  129. from Aaron or his sons.

  130. And so God sent his son,

  131. the word,

  132. into our world

  133. to take on flesh and blood,

  134. to share in our humanity

  135. in every respect

  136. so that we could have

  137. the high priest

  138. that we most desperately needed.

  139. One of us

  140. who would serve us mercifully

  141. with compassion

  142. and one who would serve God

  143. and see that what God desired

  144. would be done for his people

  145. and that he might make atonement

  146. for the sins

  147. of the people.

  148. These are such humbling words.

  149. Do you realize

  150. that you cannot come to God

  151. on your own behalf?

  152. You cannot make atonement

  153. for your own sins.

  154. We have need of someone

  155. to do it for us.

  156. Someone who does not share

  157. in our guilt

  158. and yet is one of us

  159. having flesh and blood

  160. as we have.

  161. chapter 3, verse 1.

  162. Therefore, he says,

  163. holy brothers and sisters

  164. who share in the heavenly calling,

  165. fix your thoughts on Jesus,

  166. whom we acknowledge

  167. as our apostle

  168. and high priest.

  169. We're not going to talk

  170. about apostle today,

  171. but high priest.

  172. He says,

  173. fix your thoughts

  174. on Jesus.

  175. Think about him.

  176. consider him.

  177. He's the one

  178. who we confess.

  179. He's the one

  180. who we acknowledge

  181. as our high priest.

  182. Fix your thoughts

  183. on him right now.

  184. And then the author

  185. of Hebrews goes on

  186. to tell us about how

  187. Jesus was faithful

  188. to God.

  189. God appointed him

  190. and he was faithful

  191. to the one

  192. who appointed him.

  193. He tells us that

  194. Jesus was more faithful

  195. more worthy of honor

  196. than even Moses was.

  197. And then he reminds us

  198. of how God related

  199. to the Israelites

  200. long ago

  201. in the days of Moses.

  202. He reminds us of how

  203. the Israelites

  204. rebelled against God.

  205. They tested God.

  206. They tried God.

  207. Their hearts

  208. were always going astray.

  209. They were often acting

  210. like they didn't even know

  211. God.

  212. And so God punished them.

  213. He forbid a whole

  214. generation of them

  215. from entering

  216. the rest of the promised land.

  217. These words make me tremble

  218. because in many ways

  219. we're more like

  220. the Israelites

  221. than unlike them.

  222. Aren't we?

  223. Prone to complaining,

  224. grumbling,

  225. hearts always going astray,

  226. even at times

  227. doing the things

  228. that we know

  229. are wrong

  230. or choosing

  231. not to do

  232. the things

  233. that we know

  234. are good

  235. and right.

  236. The author of Hebrews

  237. turns to his readers

  238. and even to us

  239. and he pleads

  240. with us.

  241. Don't be like them.

  242. If you hear

  243. God's voice

  244. speaking to you,

  245. he says,

  246. do not harden

  247. your hearts

  248. like they did

  249. in the wilderness.

  250. He says,

  251. see to it,

  252. brothers

  253. and sisters,

  254. that none of you

  255. has a sinful

  256. and unbelieving heart

  257. that turns away

  258. from the living God.

  259. But encourage

  260. one another

  261. daily,

  262. as long as it is

  263. called today,

  264. so that none of you

  265. may be hardened

  266. by sin's

  267. deceitfulness.

  268. Sin is still

  269. a big problem

  270. even for us

  271. who know the Lord.

  272. It can deceive.

  273. It can harden

  274. our hearts.

  275. It's constantly

  276. there inviting us

  277. to turn away

  278. from God.

  279. And it's not just

  280. the bad things

  281. that we do

  282. or the good things

  283. that we fail to do.

  284. It's even the inward

  285. thoughts

  286. and attitudes

  287. of our heart

  288. where sin

  289. continues to

  290. hold sway

  291. in our lives.

  292. A little later

  293. in chapter 4,

  294. the author of Hebrews

  295. says this to us,

  296. verse 12.

  297. He says,

  298. the word of God

  299. is alive

  300. and active,

  301. sharper than

  302. any double-edged sword.

  303. It penetrates

  304. even to dividing

  305. soul and spirit,

  306. joints and marrow.

  307. It judges

  308. the thoughts

  309. and attitudes

  310. of the heart.

  311. Nothing

  312. in all creation

  313. is hidden

  314. from God's sight.

  315. Everything

  316. is uncovered

  317. and laid bare

  318. before the eyes

  319. of Him

  320. to whom

  321. we must give

  322. account.

  323. Sin is a great

  324. problem for us.

  325. He tells us

  326. that one day

  327. we will all

  328. have to give

  329. an account

  330. for everything

  331. the Lord

  332. has watched

  333. us do.

  334. Say

  335. and even

  336. think

  337. and desire

  338. the thoughts

  339. and attitudes

  340. of the heart.

  341. And this is

  342. why we need

  343. an even

  344. greater

  345. high priest.

  346. He goes on

  347. in chapter 4,

  348. verse 14.

  349. He says,

  350. therefore,

  351. since we

  352. have a great

  353. high priest

  354. who has

  355. ascended

  356. into heaven,

  357. Jesus,

  358. the Son of

  359. God,

  360. let us hold

  361. firmly to the

  362. faith we

  363. profess.

  364. For we do not

  365. have a high priest

  366. who is unable

  367. to empathize

  368. with our

  369. weaknesses,

  370. but we

  371. have one

  372. who has

  373. been tempted

  374. in every

  375. way,

  376. just as we

  377. are,

  378. yet

  379. without sin.

  380. Let us

  381. then approach

  382. God's

  383. throne of

  384. grace

  385. with confidence

  386. so that we

  387. may receive

  388. mercy

  389. and find

  390. grace

  391. to help

  392. us

  393. in our

  394. time of

  395. need.

  396. We have

  397. a great

  398. sin problem

  399. just like

  400. the Israelites

  401. of long

  402. ago,

  403. yes,

  404. but we

  405. have an

  406. even

  407. greater

  408. high priest

  409. than the

  410. Israelites

  411. ever did

  412. back then,

  413. Jesus,

  414. the Son

  415. of God.

  416. Listen to

  417. what it says

  418. about him.

  419. It says,

  420. because he

  421. is a

  422. high priest,

  423. truly human

  424. as we

  425. are,

  426. he is

  427. able to

  428. empathize

  429. with our

  430. weaknesses.

  431. That's

  432. precious,

  433. isn't it?

  434. Jesus

  435. understands

  436. the

  437. feebleness

  438. and the

  439. fickleness

  440. of our

  441. human hearts,

  442. how emotions

  443. come and

  444. emotions go,

  445. how one

  446. minute we're

  447. eager to do

  448. what is good

  449. and the

  450. next minute

  451. we feel

  452. the desire

  453. of the

  454. temptation

  455. to do

  456. what is

  457. not.

  458. And yet

  459. amazingly,

  460. Jesus never

  461. once gave

  462. in to

  463. temptation.

  464. He never

  465. once sinned.

  466. Sometimes as

  467. we hear this,

  468. we might think,

  469. well, if Jesus

  470. never sinned or

  471. he never had

  472. sin in his

  473. heart,

  474. how could he

  475. possibly know

  476. what it's like

  477. to feel tempted

  478. the way that I

  479. do?

  480. temptation,

  481. it is true

  482. that temptation

  483. came to

  484. Jesus in a

  485. different sort

  486. of way,

  487. never out of

  488. a sinful

  489. heart because

  490. his heart

  491. was pure.

  492. And yet,

  493. just as the

  494. author of

  495. Hebrews tells

  496. us, the

  497. temptations

  498. that he

  499. felt were

  500. just as

  501. real,

  502. just as

  503. same strength

  504. and the

  505. same power.

  506. He had the

  507. same creaturely

  508. weaknesses that

  509. we have,

  510. hunger,

  511. fatigue,

  512. thirst,

  513. bodily

  514. discomfort,

  515. pain from

  516. wounds,

  517. itches that

  518. call to be

  519. scratched.

  520. And he had a

  521. whole other set

  522. of temptations

  523. that we do

  524. not have,

  525. the temptation

  526. to take hold

  527. of what was

  528. rightfully his,

  529. the temptation

  530. not to lay

  531. down his

  532. life and

  533. suffer and

  534. go to the

  535. cross.

  536. Because Jesus

  537. never gave

  538. in to

  539. temptation,

  540. he knows

  541. its strength,

  542. its full

  543. strength and

  544. full power

  545. even better

  546. than we do.

  547. And that's

  548. the kind of

  549. high priest

  550. that we

  551. need,

  552. isn't it?

  553. One who

  554. understands

  555. our weaknesses,

  556. one who

  557. understands just

  558. what we're

  559. going through,

  560. one who

  561. understands why

  562. we are coming

  563. back yet

  564. again to

  565. seek God's

  566. forgiveness.

  567. And notice

  568. what it says

  569. here.

  570. He doesn't

  571. say, because

  572. we have

  573. Jesus, a

  574. great high

  575. priest, we

  576. can come

  577. back to

  578. God for

  579. grace and

  580. forgiveness an

  581. extra 100

  582. times in our

  583. lives before

  584. we are cut

  585. off.

  586. We almost

  587. expect him to

  588. say that

  589. sometimes,

  590. don't we?

  591. me, but

  592. he says the

  593. opposite.

  594. He says,

  595. since we

  596. have a

  597. great high

  598. priest,

  599. Jesus, the

  600. son of God,

  601. let us hold

  602. firmly to

  603. the faith we

  604. profess.

  605. Let us

  606. approach God's

  607. throne with

  608. confidence.

  609. Do you hear

  610. that?

  611. This is the

  612. same God who

  613. struck people

  614. dead in past

  615. times for their

  616. sin.

  617. This is the

  618. same God who

  619. you did not

  620. dare to set a

  621. toe into the

  622. most holy

  623. place of his

  624. temple unless

  625. you were the

  626. high priest,

  627. and that only

  628. once a year

  629. with the

  630. blood of a

  631. sacrifice.

  632. But now,

  633. since we have

  634. Jesus for our

  635. high priest,

  636. let us

  637. approach God's

  638. throne,

  639. his throne,

  640. with confidence,

  641. like right

  642. into his

  643. presence.

  644. Even the

  645. mention of

  646. God's throne

  647. after reading

  648. through the

  649. Old Testament

  650. again this

  651. year,

  652. strikes a

  653. chord of

  654. fear into

  655. my heart.

  656. It's from

  657. there that

  658. God rules.

  659. It's from

  660. there that

  661. God gives

  662. out his

  663. righteous

  664. judgments

  665. upon sinners

  666. like you and

  667. me.

  668. And yet,

  669. because of

  670. Jesus,

  671. our high

  672. priest,

  673. God's throne

  674. is now for

  675. us a throne

  676. of grace,

  677. a place

  678. where God

  679. gives generously

  680. to us,

  681. gives blessing,

  682. gives favor.

  683. so long as

  684. your heart

  685. is firmly

  686. set on

  687. Jesus,

  688. your high

  689. priest,

  690. the one

  691. who has

  692. made

  693. atonement

  694. for you,

  695. walk right

  696. in to

  697. the presence

  698. of God

  699. and find

  700. the gifts

  701. of grace

  702. that you

  703. need,

  704. the help

  705. that you

  706. need,

  707. he says,

  708. the mercy,

  709. the forgiveness

  710. that you need,

  711. so that we

  712. may receive

  713. mercy

  714. and grace

  715. to help us

  716. in our time

  717. of need.

  718. And I love

  719. how general

  720. that is.

  721. In our time

  722. of need,

  723. what time

  724. of need?

  725. Any time

  726. of need.

  727. Are you in

  728. need of

  729. forgiveness

  730. for sins

  731. that you've

  732. committed?

  733. Come to

  734. the throne

  735. of grace.

  736. Are you

  737. feeling weary

  738. and worn?

  739. come to

  740. the throne

  741. of grace.

  742. Are you

  743. feeling lonely

  744. and despairing?

  745. Come to

  746. the throne

  747. of grace.

  748. Feeling

  749. anxious

  750. or worried,

  751. come to

  752. God's throne

  753. of grace.

  754. Feeling

  755. tempted to

  756. sin,

  757. come to

  758. God's throne

  759. of grace.

  760. What's

  761. your need

  762. this morning?

  763. Whatever

  764. it is,

  765. come to

  766. God's throne

  767. of grace

  768. and find

  769. grace

  770. and help

  771. in your

  772. time of

  773. need.

  774. Because of

  775. Jesus,

  776. you are

  777. welcome

  778. in God's

  779. presence.

  780. More than

  781. welcome,

  782. you are

  783. invited.

  784. More than

  785. invited,

  786. you are

  787. urged

  788. strongly

  789. to come

  790. in.

  791. Jesus,

  792. our

  793. high

  794. priest,

  795. has

  796. secured

  797. that

  798. privilege

  799. for us

  800. on our

  801. behalf.

  802. The author

  803. of Hebrews

  804. then goes

  805. on to

  806. compare

  807. Jesus

  808. to the

  809. priests

  810. of

  811. Levi.

  812. Just

  813. as the

  814. priests

  815. of Levi,

  816. Jesus

  817. too was

  818. appointed

  819. by God.

  820. He was

  821. called

  822. by God

  823. to the

  824. special

  825. role of

  826. service

  827. on our

  828. behalf.

  829. He

  830. too is

  831. able to

  832. deal

  833. gently

  834. with

  835. those

  836. who

  837. are

  838. ignorant

  839. and

  840. are

  841. going

  842. astray

  843. because

  844. he

  845. himself

  846. has

  847. been

  848. subject

  849. to

  850. human

  851. weakness.

  852. He

  853. too is

  854. familiar

  855. with

  856. pain

  857. and

  858. suffering.

  859. But,

  860. says the

  861. author of

  862. Hebrews,

  863. Jesus

  864. is a

  865. greater

  866. high

  867. priest

  868. than

  869. Aaron

  870. or his

  871. sons

  872. ever

  873. could

  874. be.

  875. He's

  876. of a

  877. different

  878. and much

  879. superior

  880. order

  881. of

  882. priests

  883. altogether.

  884. And,

  885. he's

  886. not like

  887. the

  888. priests

  889. of

  890. Levi

  891. who

  892. lived

  893. and

  894. died

  895. and

  896. then

  897. a

  898. new

  899. one

  900. would

  901. be

  902. appointed

  903. and

  904. then

  905. die

  906. and

  907. then

  908. a

  909. new

  910. one

  911. would

  912. be

  913. appointed

  914. and

  915. then

  916. die.

  917. No,

  918. he

  919. tells

  920. us

  921. Jesus

  922. has

  923. become

  924. a

  925. high

  926. priest

  927. forever.

  928. Not

  929. on the

  930. basis

  931. or

  932. regulation

  933. as

  934. to

  935. his

  936. ancestry

  937. but

  938. on

  939. the

  940. basis

  941. of

  942. the

  943. power

  944. of

  945. an

  946. indestructible

  947. life.

  948. Chapter

  949. 6

  950. verse

  951. 20

  952. He

  953. has

  954. become

  955. a

  956. high

  957. priest

  958. forever.

  959. The

  960. Lord

  961. has

  962. sworn

  963. and

  964. will

  965. not

  966. change

  967. his

  968. mind

  969. you

  970. are

  971. a

  972. priest

  973. forever.

  974. Chapter

  975. 7

  976. verse

  977. 23

  978. Now

  979. there

  980. have

  981. been

  982. many

  983. of

  984. those

  985. priests

  986. since

  987. death

  988. prevented

  989. them

  990. from

  991. continuing

  992. in

  993. office.

  994. That's

  995. the

  996. priests

  997. of

  998. Levi.

  999. But

  1000. because

  1001. Jesus

  1002. lives

  1003. forever

  1004. he

  1005. has

  1006. a

  1007. permanent

  1008. priesthood.

  1009. Therefore

  1010. he

  1011. is

  1012. able

  1013. to

  1014. save

  1015. completely

  1016. those

  1017. who

  1018. come

  1019. to

  1020. God

  1021. through

  1022. him

  1023. because

  1024. he

  1025. always

  1026. lives

  1027. to

  1028. intercede

  1029. for

  1030. them.

  1031. Such

  1032. a

  1033. high

  1034. priest

  1035. truly

  1036. meets

  1037. our

  1038. need.

  1039. One

  1040. who

  1041. is

  1042. holy,

  1043. blameless,

  1044. pure,

  1045. set

  1046. apart

  1047. from

  1048. sinners,

  1049. exalted

  1050. above

  1051. the

  1052. heavens.

  1053. Unlike

  1054. the other

  1055. high

  1056. priests,

  1057. he does

  1058. not need

  1059. to offer

  1060. sacrifices

  1061. day

  1062. after day,

  1063. first for

  1064. his own

  1065. sins and

  1066. then for

  1067. the sins

  1068. of the

  1069. people.

  1070. He

  1071. sacrificed

  1072. for their

  1073. sins

  1074. once

  1075. for all

  1076. when he

  1077. offered

  1078. himself.

  1079. I love

  1080. these words

  1081. so much.

  1082. This

  1083. arrangement

  1084. that we

  1085. have with

  1086. Jesus

  1087. as our

  1088. great

  1089. and better

  1090. high

  1091. priest,

  1092. this

  1093. arrangement

  1094. is

  1095. permanent.

  1096. Jesus

  1097. will

  1098. always

  1099. be there

  1100. for us.

  1101. You

  1102. are a

  1103. priest

  1104. forever.

  1105. Not

  1106. just

  1107. standing

  1108. in the

  1109. gap

  1110. between

  1111. God

  1112. and

  1113. us,

  1114. but

  1115. permanently

  1116. bridging

  1117. the

  1118. gap

  1119. forever.

  1120. Such

  1121. that there

  1122. really is

  1123. in a

  1124. sense,

  1125. now no

  1126. gap.

  1127. We

  1128. may come

  1129. to Jesus

  1130. and there

  1131. is nothing

  1132. to prevent

  1133. us from

  1134. coming

  1135. right to

  1136. God,

  1137. right into

  1138. his

  1139. presence.

  1140. The

  1141. curtain

  1142. separating

  1143. the most

  1144. holy

  1145. place

  1146. was torn

  1147. from

  1148. top to

  1149. bottom

  1150. when

  1151. Jesus

  1152. offered

  1153. his

  1154. sacrifice

  1155. on our

  1156. behalf.

  1157. The

  1158. way is

  1159. open

  1160. to

  1161. God

  1162. forever.

  1163. And

  1164. Jesus,

  1165. he says,

  1166. will

  1167. always be

  1168. there to

  1169. intercede

  1170. for us.

  1171. And

  1172. what's

  1173. surprising,

  1174. at least

  1175. from the

  1176. perspective

  1177. of the

  1178. Old

  1179. Testament,

  1180. is the

  1181. sacrifice

  1182. that

  1183. Jesus,

  1184. our

  1185. high

  1186. priest,

  1187. offered.

  1188. He

  1189. sacrificed

  1190. for their

  1191. sins

  1192. once for

  1193. all

  1194. when he

  1195. offered

  1196. himself.

  1197. It's

  1198. not the

  1199. body and

  1200. blood of

  1201. an animal

  1202. slain that

  1203. atones for

  1204. our sins,

  1205. but the

  1206. body and

  1207. blood of

  1208. the priest

  1209. himself.

  1210. Jesus

  1211. offered

  1212. himself,

  1213. priest

  1214. and

  1215. sacrifice.

  1216. Chapter

  1217. 9,

  1218. verse 11.

  1219. But when

  1220. Christ came

  1221. as high

  1222. priest of

  1223. the good

  1224. things that

  1225. are now

  1226. already here,

  1227. he went

  1228. through the

  1229. greater and

  1230. more perfect

  1231. tabernacle that

  1232. is not made

  1233. with human

  1234. hands,

  1235. that is to

  1236. say,

  1237. is not a

  1238. part of

  1239. this creation.

  1240. He did

  1241. not enter

  1242. by means

  1243. of the

  1244. blood of

  1245. goats and

  1246. calves,

  1247. but he

  1248. entered the

  1249. most holy

  1250. place once

  1251. for all by

  1252. his own

  1253. blood,

  1254. thus obtaining

  1255. eternal

  1256. redemption.

  1257. The

  1258. sacrifice

  1259. that Jesus

  1260. offered was

  1261. himself,

  1262. his own

  1263. body and

  1264. blood,

  1265. broken and

  1266. shed to

  1267. atone for

  1268. our sins.

  1269. And not

  1270. just to

  1271. atone for

  1272. them temporarily

  1273. or until

  1274. the next

  1275. time that

  1276. we sin,

  1277. but to

  1278. atone for

  1279. them once

  1280. for all,

  1281. obtaining

  1282. for us

  1283. eternal

  1284. redemption,

  1285. case closed,

  1286. it is

  1287. finished,

  1288. saved

  1289. forever.

  1290. A little

  1291. further down

  1292. in that same

  1293. chapter,

  1294. verse 25

  1295. of chapter

  1296. 9.

  1297. Nor did

  1298. he enter

  1299. heaven to

  1300. offer himself

  1301. again and

  1302. again the

  1303. way the

  1304. high priest

  1305. enters the

  1306. most holy

  1307. place every

  1308. year with

  1309. blood that

  1310. is not his

  1311. own.

  1312. Otherwise,

  1313. Christ would

  1314. have had to

  1315. suffer many

  1316. times since

  1317. the creation

  1318. of the

  1319. world.

  1320. But he,

  1321. Christ,

  1322. has appeared

  1323. once for

  1324. all at the

  1325. culmination of

  1326. the ages to

  1327. do away with

  1328. sin by the

  1329. sacrifice of

  1330. himself.

  1331. Once for

  1332. all.

  1333. Do you

  1334. hear that?

  1335. If you

  1336. have come

  1337. to Jesus

  1338. and have

  1339. Christ as

  1340. your high

  1341. priest,

  1342. he has

  1343. done away

  1344. with your

  1345. sin once

  1346. for all,

  1347. for all

  1348. time,

  1349. by the

  1350. sacrifice of

  1351. himself.

  1352. Chapter 10,

  1353. verse 11.

  1354. Day after

  1355. day,

  1356. every priest

  1357. stands and

  1358. performs his

  1359. religious duties.

  1360. Again and

  1361. again,

  1362. he offers the

  1363. same sacrifices

  1364. which can

  1365. never take

  1366. away sins.

  1367. But when

  1368. this priest,

  1369. referring to

  1370. Jesus,

  1371. had offered

  1372. for all

  1373. time one

  1374. sacrifice for

  1375. sins,

  1376. he sat

  1377. down at

  1378. the right

  1379. hand of

  1380. God.

  1381. And since

  1382. that time,

  1383. he waits

  1384. for his

  1385. enemies to

  1386. be made

  1387. his footstool.

  1388. For by one

  1389. sacrifice,

  1390. he has made

  1391. perfect forever

  1392. those who

  1393. are being

  1394. made holy.

  1395. I know I've

  1396. skipped over so

  1397. much here.

  1398. we don't have

  1399. time to look

  1400. at all of

  1401. it,

  1402. but we

  1403. have a

  1404. better high

  1405. priest than

  1406. any of the

  1407. Levites ever

  1408. could have

  1409. been.

  1410. He has

  1411. offered a

  1412. better sacrifice

  1413. than they

  1414. could ever

  1415. offer.

  1416. He offered

  1417. that sacrifice

  1418. in the

  1419. greater and

  1420. more perfect

  1421. tabernacle in

  1422. heaven,

  1423. and by doing

  1424. this,

  1425. Jesus secured

  1426. for us a

  1427. better covenant,

  1428. a better

  1429. arrangement with

  1430. God for the

  1431. rest of

  1432. eternity.

  1433. again, the

  1434. author of

  1435. Hebrews now

  1436. turns to

  1437. his readers,

  1438. to us,

  1439. and pleads

  1440. with us.

  1441. Therefore,

  1442. brothers and

  1443. sisters,

  1444. since we have

  1445. confidence to

  1446. enter the most

  1447. holy place by

  1448. the blood of

  1449. Jesus, by a

  1450. new and

  1451. living way

  1452. open for us

  1453. through the

  1454. curtain, that

  1455. is his body,

  1456. and since we

  1457. have a great

  1458. priest over

  1459. the house of

  1460. God, let us

  1461. draw near to

  1462. God with a

  1463. sincere heart

  1464. and with the

  1465. full assurance

  1466. that faith

  1467. brings.

  1468. I love these

  1469. words.

  1470. Since we have

  1471. all this, a

  1472. great high

  1473. priest, and

  1474. all that he

  1475. has done for

  1476. us, what

  1477. should we do?

  1478. Let us draw

  1479. near to God

  1480. with a

  1481. sincere heart

  1482. and with

  1483. full assurance

  1484. by faith.

  1485. Let me ask

  1486. you this.

  1487. Do you want

  1488. to be close

  1489. to God?

  1490. Do you want

  1491. to have a

  1492. close friendship

  1493. relationship

  1494. with God?

  1495. You can.

  1496. we can

  1497. because of

  1498. what Jesus,

  1499. our high

  1500. priest, has

  1501. done in

  1502. service of

  1503. us.

  1504. And so

  1505. draw near.

  1506. Come to

  1507. him.

  1508. As we come

  1509. to the Lord's

  1510. table this

  1511. morning, we

  1512. come not

  1513. only to

  1514. remember a

  1515. perfect lamb

  1516. who was

  1517. slain, but

  1518. also a great

  1519. high priest who

  1520. went to work

  1521. on our behalf.

  1522. a great high

  1523. priest who

  1524. had flesh and

  1525. blood just

  1526. as we do

  1527. and who

  1528. offered that

  1529. flesh and

  1530. blood in

  1531. sacrifice for

  1532. our sins so

  1533. that we would

  1534. be redeemed

  1535. forever.

  1536. The juice that

  1537. we are about to

  1538. drink represents

  1539. Jesus' blood.

  1540. The bread,

  1541. his body.

  1542. in just a few

  1543. moments, Charles

  1544. and Rod are

  1545. going to come

  1546. forward and

  1547. they're going to

  1548. serve the bread

  1549. and the cup.

  1550. And if you've

  1551. put your trust

  1552. in Jesus as

  1553. your great

  1554. high priest,

  1555. then please

  1556. partake with

  1557. us.

  1558. Celebrate with

  1559. us.

  1560. We'll wait until

  1561. everybody who

  1562. wishes to

  1563. partake has been

  1564. served and then

  1565. we'll eat and

  1566. drink all together

  1567. in unison.

  1568. But in these

  1569. next few moments

  1570. of quiet

  1571. reflection,

  1572. before we serve

  1573. the elements,

  1574. I just want to

  1575. invite you,

  1576. whether for the

  1577. first time or

  1578. for the

  1579. thousandth time,

  1580. to draw near

  1581. to God and

  1582. put your trust

  1583. in Jesus,

  1584. our great

  1585. high priest

  1586. again.

  1587. Maybe there's

  1588. sins that you

  1589. need to confess

  1590. and ask

  1591. forgiveness for.

  1592. Maybe there's a

  1593. particular weakness

  1594. or failing in your

  1595. life that you

  1596. need to ask

  1597. God for help

  1598. with.

  1599. Maybe there's

  1600. some kind of

  1601. other need,

  1602. totally different

  1603. that you have.

  1604. Maybe you just

  1605. want to express

  1606. your love and

  1607. thanksgiving and

  1608. praise to God.

  1609. The way is

  1610. open.

  1611. Draw near with

  1612. a sincere heart.

  1613. Come to the

  1614. throne of grace

  1615. in these next

  1616. moments in quiet

  1617. prayer.

  1618. Jesus, our

  1619. high priest,

  1620. has made that

  1621. possible.

  1622. study with

  1623. young people,

  1624. a

  1625. break from

  1626. socks.

  1627. After

  1628. keeping

  1629. iti published

  1630. iox.com

  1631. Thank you.

  1632. Thank you.

  1633. Thank you.

  1634. Thank you.

  1635. Thank you.

  1636. Thank you.

  1637. Thank you.

  1638. Thank you.

  1639. Thank you.
