  1. well read and it's in the Old Testament. It's a minor prophet. It's the book of Habakkuk.

  2. And so it's about the fourth book from the end. And I got interested in reading Habakkuk this fall

  3. when Ellie and I were doing devotions. And, you know, we read through it and it just didn't,

  4. you know, if you read one chapter a night, it just doesn't flow. And then we hit the last two verses

  5. and it just, it really caught me because it just, it just spoke right when we're doing harvest. It

  6. just spoke. So I thought, I'm going to reread through Habakkuk and study it. And it really,

  7. wow, does it ever hit. It's an interesting book because it's, it's a, it's a dialogue between God

  8. and Habakkuk. He makes a, he does, he makes some verses. God does some verses. Habakkuk makes some

  9. verses. God talks to him and then Habakkuk finishes off. So if we, if you want to look,

  10. look at your, in your book. So the, just before Zephaniah and just after Nahum. So the book is

  11. written in the timeframe is about 626 BC. So it's just, yeah, about 626 years before Christ.

  12. Nahum, Zephaniah and Jeremiah were all contemporaries. So the book was written about the same time as

  13. those other books. And the Assyrians, you know, they had been the big player in the field and they

  14. were, they're now off the field. And Babylon is the mighty power. Like Babylon is the great power.

  15. Babylon had just defeated the Egyptians. They kind of went past Israel and defeated Egypt. And then,

  16. and then Jeremiah in his book announced that Babylon would invade Judah, destroying Jerusalem and destroy

  17. the temple, sending Israel into exile. And this happened between 606 and 586.

  18. So if we open our, open our book, cause I'm going to read the whole chapter or the whole book. It's only

  19. three chapters. Habakkuk was very distressed. The oracle that Habakkuk, the prophesied, prophet received,

  20. how long, O Lord, must I call for help? But you do not listen or cry out to you violence,

  21. but you do not save. Why do you make me look at injustice? Why do you tolerate wrong?

  22. Destruction and violence are before me. There is strife and conflict abounds.

  23. Therefore, the law is paralyzed and justice never prevails. The wicked hem in the righteous so that justice

  24. is perverted.

  25. Habakkuk was very distressed. He points out that violence, injustice, wrong, destruction, strife,

  26. and conflict abound. This is a picture of Israel. This is a, they were spiraling downward,

  27. ever so away from God, more and more, since David was king in 1015 BC. So almost 400 years.

  28. There was, there was a real mixture of religious ideas. Solomon's temple mixed with idolatry.

  29. God's law, the Ten Commandments, the book of Leviticus, Deuteronomy, they were ignored.

  30. You know, you can think of the horribleness. Children were being sacrificed to the god of Molech.

  31. Like they had a, they built a statue, a metal statue. They get a fire burning in this thing that was red hot.

  32. And then they put their kids on it. That's the kind of depravity that these people had.

  33. They would burn up, barbecue their own children. So this is, this is what, this is what,

  34. that Habakkuk was, he was, he was just really distraught. These were terrible times.

  35. You know, the temple prostitutes at the high places, you know, and it just,

  36. they had gone totally away from God. They had just ignored God.

  37. And, but we look at that, we read this, but then it hits me.

  38. Look at Habakkuk's attitude to God. Let's reread those verses.

  39. So we look at that.

  40. Look at Habakkuk's attitude. He is blaming God for being inept, uncaring.

  41. It's as if it's God's fault that the law is being ignored.

  42. Israel felt this after, you know, Israel felt this after the Holocaust.

  43. It was this, this kind of the same attitude. You know, they were, yeah, we're God's people,

  44. but you allowed the Germans, you allowed Hitler to kill us.

  45. So it's very much the same attitude, and it's kind of prevalent in Israel today.

  46. We're often, personally, we're often like Habakkuk.

  47. We often accuse God of ignoring what has happened.

  48. You know, how many times do we say, God, if only you would do this, but you're not doing anything.

  49. And God is.

  50. How often does it feel like the ceiling is lead-lined, and God does not hear our prayers?

  51. Ah, God, why don't you answer me?

  52. You're just, you're just not doing anything.

  53. God's rebuttal.

  54. The Lord's answer, verses 5 to 11.

  55. Look at the nations and watch.

  56. Be utterly amazed, for I'm going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if it were told.

  57. I'm raising up the Babylonians, that ruthless and impetuous people who sweep across the whole earth to seize dwelling places not their own.

  58. They're a feared and dreaded people.

  59. They're feared and dreaded.

  60. They are a law to themselves and promote their own honor.

  61. Their horses are swifter than leopards, fiercer than wolves at dusk.

  62. Their cavalry gallops headlong.

  63. Their horsemen come from afar.

  64. They fly like vultures, swooping to devour.

  65. They all come bent on violence.

  66. Their hordes advance like a desert wind and gather prisoners like sand.

  67. They deride kings, scoff at rulers.

  68. They laugh at all fortified cities.

  69. They build earthen ramps and capture them.

  70. Then they sweep past like the winds and go on.

  71. Guilty men whose own strength is their God.

  72. Babylonians.

  73. Ruthless, impetuous people.

  74. If you read through the Bible, right from Genesis to Revelation, there is nothing ever positive described in Babylonians.

  75. The Babylonians started out with the Tower of Babel.

  76. That they came, they had this idea that we're going to be this, we're going to do our own thing.

  77. We're going to build this tower.

  78. Ignore God.

  79. We're going to be our own people.

  80. And, you know, Nebuchadnezzar was, you know, he was the king destroying.

  81. He was the one that took out the Israelites.

  82. And then to the fall of Babylon in Revelation 18.

  83. I'm going to read Revelation 18.

  84. And this describes what's going to happen.

  85. Or what the Babylonians are like.

  86. Revelation 18, verses 1 to 8.

    Revelation 18:1–8

  87. After this, I saw another angel come down from heaven.

  88. He had great authority and the earth was illuminated by his splendor.

  89. With a mighty voice he shouted,

  90. Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great.

  91. She has become a house of demons.

  92. And a haunt for every evil spirit.

  93. A haunt for every unclean and undetestable bird.

  94. For all the nations have drunk maddening wine of her adulteries.

  95. The kings of the earth committed adultery with her.

  96. And the merchants of her earth grew rich from her excessive luxuries.

  97. Then I heard another voice from heaven.

  98. I'll just go that far.

  99. But, yeah, this is, you know, Babylon at the end times,

  100. which could be coming very soon.

  101. Babylon is just, you know, she is described as,

  102. as a, you know, a home.

  103. She has become a home for demons.

  104. A haunt for every evil spirit.

  105. A haunt for every unclean and detestable birds.

  106. So she, Babylon is always described as a horrible place.

  107. Because it's, it's always been against God.

  108. Right from the, right from the Tower of Babel.

  109. So, it's interesting.

  110. Abraham was from the Ur of the Chaldeans.

  111. Chaldeans and Babylonians are an interchangeable name.

  112. So, Abraham came from that people.

  113. He, he originated.

  114. And then they left and then became the nation of Israel.

  115. But that was quite a few hundred years before,

  116. thousands of years before this.

  117. So, let's go back to, you know, we read,

  118. we read how God is foretelling how, how the,

  119. how the armies are even going to invade.

  120. They come, like, it's, it's like the German Blitzkrieg.

  121. They don't just come in like a slow marking.

  122. They come with, oh, armies, horses, fast.

  123. They take over.

  124. They wipe out.

  125. They destroy.

  126. They, they use earthen ramps.

  127. And, you know, like they, you know, you have your fortified cities.

  128. Well, they, they have shields.

  129. They build the earthen ramp under the shields.

  130. You can't stop them.

  131. You can't stop the Babylonians.

  132. They come in and they destroy.

  133. And they take everyone as captives.

  134. And that's what happened.

  135. Later on, when, uh, you think of Daniel and Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

  136. They were kids when this happened.

  137. They got taken down to Babylon.

  138. So let's, um, next part.

  139. Oh, Lord, are you not from everlasting?

  140. My God, my Holy One, we will not die.

  141. Oh, Lord, you have appointed them to execute judgment.

  142. Oh, Rock, you have ordained them to punish.

  143. Your eyes are too pure to look on evil.

  144. You cannot tolerate wrong.

  145. Why, then, do you tolerate the treacherous?

  146. Why are you silent?

  147. Why, the wicked swallow up those more righteous than themselves.

  148. You have made them like fish in the sea, like sea creatures that have no ruler.

  149. The wicked foe pulls all them up with hooks, catches them in his net.

  150. He gathers them up in his dragnet, and so he rejoices and is glad.

  151. Therefore, he sacrifices to his net, and burns incense to his dragnet.

  152. And by his net, he lives in luxury and enjoys the tracest food.

  153. And he is kept on emptying his net, destroying nations without mercy.

  154. So this is just Habakkuk's, God, why are you allowing this people to come?

  155. We're Israelite, as bad as we are.

  156. We're a whole lot better than the Babylonians.

  157. Like, unbelievable.

  158. Like, we're not going out there destroying.

  159. And then he describes how the Babylonians, you know, they pull them up with hooks, catches them in his net, gathers them in his dragnet.

  160. So he just uses metaphors to show that this is what the people, this is what the Babylonians do.

  161. They just drag the people, haul them home, sacrifice to their gods, thanking the Babylonian gods for allowing them to have more, take over more countries, take over more people.

  162. Because that was their engine.

  163. You know, they used slaves.

  164. Where we have tractors, they had slaves.

  165. When a slave dies, you need another slave.

  166. Where do you get another slave?

  167. Take over another country.

  168. So it kind of, it becomes, they're expanding their kingdom to keep expanding so that they can live in the lap of luxury.

  169. And they're, the Babylonians, sacrifice to their gods so that they can, you know, they enjoy the choices through Babylonia was the big kingdom.

  170. And remember, Nebuchadnezzar, and Daniel, this is, this was, he was, that was his kingdom.

  171. Verse chapter 2, 1 and 2.

  172. I will stand at my watch and station myself on the rampart.

  173. I will look to see what he has says to me and what, and what answers I am to give to this complaint.

  174. You know, so, um, Habakkuk is just, I am standing here, tell me what, you know, I don't see any good happening.

  175. I'm frustrated.

  176. I'm mad.

  177. Then the Lord's answer.

  178. Chapter 2.

  179. Then the Lord replied, write down the revelation and make a plane on tablets so that a herald may run with it.

  180. For the revelation awaits an appointed time.

  181. It speaks of the end and will not be proved false.

  182. Though it lingers, wait for it.

  183. It will certainly come and will not delay.

  184. The Lord's answer.

  185. So he wants the Israelites to see what is going to happen.

  186. Like, this is a prophecy happening in short term.

  187. Like, they, you know, they already knew that the Babylonians took out the Egyptians.

  188. So they knew well what these people were capable of.

  189. And they, you know, some of the other false prophets were saying, don't worry about it.

  190. They're not going to bother you.

  191. Good things are going to happen.

  192. And God is using Habakkuk, Jeremiah, Zephaniah, all these guys to say, whoa, change your ways or this will happen.

  193. And, you know, write down the revelation.

  194. Make it plain.

  195. Verse 3 is really interesting.

  196. For the revelation awaits an appointed time.

  197. It speaks of the end.

  198. It speaks of the end.

  199. And it will not be proved false.

  200. Though it linger, wait for it.

  201. It will certainly come and will not delay.

  202. This speaks.

  203. This is one of these prophecies that's relevant for five years from that time.

  204. Or ten years, whatever time frame he wrote in.

  205. It also speaks of what happens to Israel in the end days.

  206. Many of the same things, you know, like talked about will happen to Israel.

  207. Like it's, you know, as we're studying, going through David Hawkins' study in Revelation,

  208. it talks about the destruction that's doomed for Israel because of their, just because they're God's chosen people.

  209. And Satan wants to take them out because if he can take them out and take Jerusalem out, God can't come back to that land.

  210. So it's, you know, there's a whole lot more to this story than what I can talk about, but it's here.

  211. And then talks about the leader of Babylon.

  212. See, he is puffed up.

  213. His delights are not upright.

  214. Right?

  215. Important verse.

  216. But the righteous will live by his faith.

  217. Indeed, wine betrays him.

  218. He is arrogant and never at rest because he is greedy as the grave.

  219. Unlike death is never satisfied.

  220. He gathers to himself all the nations and take captive all people.

  221. Yeah.

  222. Yeah.

  223. Yeah.

  224. Yeah.

  225. Habakkuk is shocked that God would choose an evil empire to decimate or to discipline Israel.

  226. And, yeah.

  227. In this next section, the Lord answers and describes the Babylonian leaders.

  228. It also contains four lows that are extreme warnings to those who do sins.

  229. They apply to us equally today.

  230. They're not just dusty old warnings.

  231. They're relevant to us.

  232. Nebuchadnezzar, the king, was a hyper-narcissist.

  233. Remember, he had a 90-foot golden statue built.

  234. All government officials were to worship him.

  235. Not just, you know, all the people, but all the government officials were to come together,

  236. worship his image, or be thrown into the fiery furnace.

  237. And if you remember the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, they did not.

  238. They honored God, and he saved them.

  239. But right in the middle of that is the very important phrase,

  240. but the righteous will live by his faith.

  241. So those who are still righteous, those who are righteous in God,

  242. those who believe in him, will live by their faith.

  243. So it's interesting how that exact phrase is repeated three times in the New Testament.

  244. Romans 1, 16 and 17.

  245. I am not ashamed of the gospel because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes,

  246. first for the Jew, then for the Gentiles.

  247. For in the gospel, a righteousness from God is revealed,

  248. a righteousness that is by faith from first to last.

  249. Just as it is written, the righteous will live by faith.

  250. Next, Galatians.

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  251. Chapter 3, 6 to 11.

  252. Consider Abraham.

  253. He believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness.

  254. Understand then that those who believe are children of Abraham.

  255. The Spirit foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith

  256. and announce the gospel in advance to Abraham.

  257. All nations will be blessed through you

  258. so that those who have faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

  259. All who rely on observing the law are under a curse,

  260. for it is written,

  261. Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the book of the law.

  262. Clearly, no one is justified before God by the law because the righteous will live by faith.

  263. And then third, Hebrews.

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  264. Chapter 10, 35 to 39.

  265. Do not throw away your confidence.

  266. They will be richly rewarded.

  267. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God,

  268. you will receive what has been promised.

  269. For in just a little while,

  270. he who is coming will delay.

  271. Well, he who is coming will come and not delay.

  272. But my righteous one will live by faith.

  273. And if he shrinks back, I will not be pleased with him.

  274. But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed,

  275. but of those who believe and are saved.

  276. Three times the verse is quoted in the New Testament

  277. and always an encouragement to us to live courageously.

  278. Yeah, four and five describes the arrogant attitude,

  279. a very sharp contrast to the righteous will live by faith.

  280. So, you know, Habakkuk is describing,

  281. he's encouraging the people that if you live by faith,

  282. you know, the righteous will live by faith.

  283. The Babylonians, they're worshiping other things.

  284. Their God is their stomach.

  285. They're, you know, they live for the immediate.

  286. They live for the gratification.

  287. Verse six.

  288. So it's just stolen goods written to everyone,

  289. not just Babylon.

  290. This is a warning to those who feel ill-gotten gain gives prosperity.

  291. You know, that's today.

  292. You know, there's lots of people that would just as soon rip you off.

  293. If they could get ahead of you in a business deal,

  294. all the better.

  295. And the laws about land ownership are being ignored,

  296. causing great inequity in Israel.

  297. 7 and 8.

  298. Will your debtors suddenly arise?

  299. Will they not wake up and make you tremble?

  300. Then you will become their victim,

  301. because you have plundered many nations.

  302. The people who are left will plunder you,

  303. for you have shed men's blood.

  304. You have destroyed lands and cities and everyone in them.

  305. And that describes Babylon.

  306. The Medes and Persians overtook Babylon after seven years, remember?

  307. The writing on the wall.

  308. That was the story of the last,

  309. the Babylonian doofus having a party,

  310. and he takes the fine cutlery and stuff from Israel,

  311. the Israelite stuff,

  312. and he's having a big party,

  313. and all of a sudden this hand is writing on the wall.

  314. And he's done.

  315. An hour later, he's gone.

  316. The Medes and Persians take over.

  317. Verse 9.

  318. Woe.

  319. Woe to him who builds his realm by unjust gain,

  320. sets his nest on high to escape the clutches of ruin.

  321. Unjust gain.

  322. Illegal business dealings.

  323. Covetousness.

  324. Now we,

  325. God had set up ways for equality among the Jews.

  326. Like there was, like it says,

  327. there will always be poor among you.

  328. Some people are better businessmen,

  329. some people are better workers,

  330. some people are widows.

  331. God had a plan in the nation Israel

  332. to take care of those.

  333. It wasn't a welfare state,

  334. but it was a way of doing things.

  335. And there was a way that you could

  336. use your land as equity,

  337. borrow against it,

  338. and then get it back.

  339. And it's written in Deuteronomy chapter 15.

    Deuteronomy 15 chapter mention

  340. At the end of every seven years,

  341. you must cancel debts.

  342. This is how it is to be done.

  343. Every creditor must cancel the loan

  344. he has made to his fellow Israelite.

  345. He shall not require payment

  346. from his fellow Israelites or brothers

  347. because the Lord's time for canceling debts

  348. has been proclaimed.

  349. You may require payment from a foreigner,

  350. but you must cancel any debt your brother owes you.

  351. However, there should be no poor among you.

  352. For in the land the Lord your God

  353. has given you to possess as your inheritance,

  354. he will richly bless you.

  355. If, big if,

  356. God's promises, if,

  357. if only you fully obey the Lord your God

  358. and are careful to follow all his commands

  359. I am giving you today.

  360. For the Lord your God will bless you

  361. as he has promised.

  362. You will lend to many nations,

  363. but will borrow from none.

  364. You will rule over many nations,

  365. but none will rule over you.

  366. So he's,

  367. he's promised these things to happen.

  368. If someone,

  369. one of your fellow Israelites

  370. puts up the land to get money

  371. and then you're to give it back to them.

  372. Even if it's one year out

  373. to give them the money

  374. and then give them back.

  375. You will prosper.

  376. This was God's promise.

  377. If,

  378. you follow his commands.

  379. They weren't following his commands.

  380. And,

  381. over and over they,

  382. he,

  383. you know,

  384. he sent prophets,

  385. he sent disasters,

  386. he sent Assyrians,

  387. he sent many things.

  388. You know,

  389. they,

  390. they,

  391. they did not want to listen.

  392. Um,

  393. 10 and 11.

  394. You applauded the ruin

  395. of many people,

  396. shaming your own house,

  397. forfeiting your life.

  398. The stones of the walls

  399. will cry out

  400. and the beams of the woodwork

  401. will echo it.

  402. So,

  403. the lands,

  404. the people,

  405. the cities

  406. that were conquered,

  407. taken over,

  408. never fully at peace.

  409. Like,

  410. you're a conquered people,

  411. now you're under the rule

  412. of the Babylonians

  413. and they,

  414. they really didn't care about you.

  415. So,

  416. it was never,

  417. never a great peaceful time.

  418. It was a horrible time.

  419. But,

  420. even the,

  421. even the stones,

  422. archaeology,

  423. proves this right.

  424. You go back

  425. and you look at some of these,

  426. uh,

  427. cities that were destroyed,

  428. the archaeology proves that.

  429. chapter,

  430. verse 12.

  431. Woe to him

  432. who builds a city

  433. with bloodshed,

  434. establishes a town

  435. by crime.

  436. Warning for nations

  437. that want to be,

  438. to want to rule the world.

  439. Every empire faces this.

  440. From Babylonians

  441. through the English

  442. and the Americans.

  443. You know,

  444. like,

  445. yeah,

  446. there's,

  447. you know,

  448. we think this was,

  449. this was something

  450. that happened eons ago.

  451. Well,

  452. you know,

  453. you look at,

  454. uh,

  455. how they treated,

  456. uh,

  457. South America.

  458. Like,

  459. Spain with South America,

  460. England with Africa,

  461. and,

  462. and,

  463. uh,

  464. India and this and that.

  465. You know,

  466. they have,

  467. they had an attitude.

  468. And it wasn't honoring to God.

  469. This has not the Lord Almighty

  470. determined that a person,

  471. that people's labor

  472. is only fuel for the fire

  473. that the lane,

  474. that the nations exhaust.

  475. What have we really acquired

  476. that is not temporary?

  477. We think,

  478. wow,

  479. we've got our maid,

  480. we've got this built.

  481. it,

  482. it,

  483. it doesn't last.

  484. Like,

  485. you know,

  486. even the pyramids

  487. are falling apart.

  488. They're not permanent.

  489. Verse 14,

  490. prophetic.

  491. For the earth

  492. will be filled

  493. with the knowledge

  494. and the glory

  495. of the Lord

  496. as the waters

  497. cover the sea.

  498. This is a,

  499. this is telling us,

  500. this isn't right now.

  501. the world

  502. the world

  503. has the ability

  504. to hear,

  505. like radio,

  506. TV,

  507. they have the world,

  508. the ability to hear

  509. about the glory of God,

  510. but they're ignoring it.

  511. When,

  512. when Christ returns,

  513. the world

  514. will be covered

  515. with his glory.

  516. To Habakkuk

  517. and,

  518. and also us,

  519. this is encouraging,

  520. knowing that

  521. the world

  522. does not just end

  523. in flames

  524. as in Jerusalem.

  525. And if we go to

  526. Revelation 19,

  527. we read

  528. 1911

  529. to

  530. 16.

  531. I saw heaven

  532. standing open

  533. and there before me

  534. was a white horse

  535. whose ruler,

  536. whose rider is called

  537. faithful and true.

  538. With justice

  539. he judges

  540. and makes war.

  541. I guess this is the,

  542. no,

  543. I made a mistake there.

  544. I was going to read

  545. that later.

  546. But that is,

  547. that is Christ.

  548. that he is,

  549. he is coming back.

  550. So,

  551. the,

  552. the world

  553. will be covered

  554. with his glory.

  555. You know,

  556. so this is encouraging

  557. to know that,

  558. that Jesus

  559. is coming back

  560. and that the world

  561. will understand.

  562. 15.

  563. Final,

  564. third,

  565. fourth rule,

  566. fourth rule.

  567. Nasty one.

  568. Woe to him

  569. who gives drink

  570. to his neighbors,

  571. pouring it

  572. from wineskins

  573. till they are drunk,

  574. so that he can gaze

  575. on their naked bodies.

  576. This is a,

  577. this is a

  578. very relevant

  579. warning.

  580. Yeah,

  581. you're going to get,

  582. get somebody drunk

  583. so that you can do

  584. profane things with them.

  585. This is not just something

  586. that's,

  587. oh,

  588. an old dusty.

  589. No,

  590. this is pertinent.

  591. God is warning us

  592. this happens.

  593. It started with Noah.

  594. Noah

  595. grew grapes,

  596. became drunk,

  597. and his son,

  598. Ham,

  599. and looked upon him.

  600. Maybe more than that,

  601. according to

  602. David Hawkins.

  603. And Noah's

  604. cursed Ham's descendants,

  605. the Canaanites.

  606. And we look at

  607. the fall of Babylon,

  608. and again,

  609. I read,

  610. read part of that

  611. in Revelation 18,

  612. and it talks about

  613. the drunkenness,

  614. like drunken

  615. with power.

  616. So in the end times,

  617. in the final seven years,

  618. the,

  619. the Babylonian kingdom

  620. will be drunk

  621. with power.

  622. They will be

  623. all powerful.

  624. They will be,

  625. you can't do anything

  626. if it isn't allowed.

  627. And they are,

  628. you know,

  629. and then God

  630. will judge them.

  631. 16 and 17.

  632. You will be filled

  633. with shame

  634. instead of glory.

  635. Now it is your turn.

  636. Drink and be exposed.

  637. The cup from the Lord's

  638. right hand

  639. is coming around to you,

  640. and disgrace

  641. will cover your glory.

  642. The violence

  643. you have done

  644. to Babylon

  645. will overwhelm you,

  646. and your destruction

  647. of animals

  648. will terrify you.

  649. For you have shed

  650. man's bloods,

  651. and you have destroyed

  652. lands and cities

  653. and everyone in them.

  654. Again,

  655. after Babylon

  656. conquers Israel,

  657. it will be punished.

  658. Now,

  659. this

  660. is a warning

  661. for Israel.

  662. Of what value

  663. is an idol

  664. since a man

  665. has carved it

  666. or an image

  667. that teaches lies

  668. for he who makes it

  669. trust in his own creation.

  670. He makes idols

  671. that cannot speak.

  672. Woe to him

  673. who says to would

  674. come to life

  675. or lifeless stone.

  676. Wake up.

  677. Can it give guidance?

  678. It is covered

  679. with gold and silver.

  680. There is no breath in it.

  681. But the Lord

  682. is in his holy temple.

  683. Let all the earth

  684. be silent before him.

  685. Habakkuk

  686. is directly

  687. talking to Israel

  688. about idols.

  689. This isn't just

  690. for the Babylonians,

  691. even though they

  692. have their idols.

  693. This is focusing

  694. on Israel.

  695. This is focusing

  696. on Israel.

  697. And right from

  698. the Tower of Babel

  699. through the Ten Commandments

  700. in Exodus 20,

  701. in Exodus 32,

  702. the golden calf,

  703. remember,

  704. Moses was up

  705. on the mountain

  706. for a month

  707. and while he was up there,

  708. the people,

  709. they threw gold

  710. into their fire

  711. and out

  712. jumped the golden calf.

  713. Just jumped out.

  714. Anyways,

  715. so all along,

  716. he has been

  717. warning these people

  718. that,

  719. you know,

  720. and then punishment.

  721. Remember,

  722. Elijah had

  723. a contest

  724. to build an altar

  725. and lightning

  726. came down

  727. and destroyed it

  728. and licked up

  729. the water.

  730. The Babylonians,

  731. they were cutting

  732. themselves

  733. and dancing

  734. and this and that,

  735. nothing happened.

  736. At the end of it,

  737. he said,

  738. okay,

  739. let's kill them all.

  740. So they killed

  741. 450 prophets.

  742. A little while later,

  743. Jehu

  744. got all the

  745. prophets of Baal

  746. to come in

  747. to their temple

  748. and he was,

  749. we're gonna have

  750. a big celebration,

  751. right?

  752. And then he had

  753. 80 guards

  754. on the outside

  755. and says,

  756. your life for theirs

  757. if any of them escape.

  758. So they killed them all.

  759. So God has

  760. punished

  761. these people,

  762. these priests,

  763. these terrible priests

  764. all through history

  765. and yet still

  766. the Israelites

  767. still wanna follow that

  768. because it's easier

  769. to see something solid

  770. than,

  771. you know,

  772. when you're praying

  773. to a God

  774. and you don't hear

  775. an answer,

  776. then you wanna say,

  777. well,

  778. I'll worship

  779. the God of fertility

  780. or the God of rain

  781. or the God of this

  782. or this God

  783. will protect me

  784. and if I do this,

  785. the Egyptians

  786. will help me.

  787. Again,

  788. Zephaniah,

  789. one couple pages

  790. later,

  791. talks in verse 4 to 6.

  792. I will stretch out

  793. my hand against Judah

  794. and against all

  795. who live in Jerusalem.

  796. I will cut off

  797. from her high places

  798. every remnant

  799. of Baal,

  800. the name of the pagans

  801. and the idolatrous priests.

  802. Those who bow down

  803. on the housetops

  804. worship the starry skies,

  805. those who bow down

  806. and swear to the Lord

  807. and who also swear

  808. by Molech,

  809. those who turn back

  810. from following the Lord

  811. will neither seek the Lord

  812. nor inquire of Him.

  813. So these are,

  814. these are powerful words

  815. that he's talking

  816. about idols.

  817. And,

  818. God's zeal never waned.

  819. whatever we,

  820. today,

  821. today,

  822. whatever we view

  823. as of equal importance

  824. to God,

  825. jobs,

  826. possessions,

  827. family,

  828. sports,

  829. entertainment,

  830. anything,

  831. anything,

  832. is still an abomination.

  833. God is still

  834. prominent.

  835. He is number one.

  836. Everything,

  837. we have jobs,

  838. we can do sports,

  839. we can watch

  840. entertainment,

  841. but to,

  842. to put it above God

  843. is,

  844. is an abomination.

  845. And,

  846. you know,

  847. the day,

  848. the day of judgment

  849. will be filled

  850. with people

  851. regretting

  852. their choices.

  853. Finally,

  854. and I'm running

  855. out of time,

  856. chapter three,

  857. the wow chapter.

  858. Prayer of Habakkuk,

  859. the prophet.

  860. Lord,

  861. I have heard

  862. of your fame.

  863. I stood in awe

  864. of your deeds,

  865. O Lord.

  866. Renew them

  867. in our day,

  868. in our time,

  869. make them known.

  870. In wrath,

  871. remember mercy.

  872. This is a different

  873. attitude.

  874. This is a different

  875. guy.

  876. After God's

  877. revelation to Habakkuk

  878. about what will

  879. happen to Israel

  880. and the punishment

  881. of Babylon,

  882. plus idolatry,

  883. he has a true

  884. picture of God.

  885. He is seeing God

  886. for who he is.

  887. Heard of your fame,

  888. stand in awe

  889. of your deed.

  890. This is,

  891. you know,

  892. we compare that

  893. to chapter one.

  894. How long,

  895. O Lord,

  896. must I call?

  897. Cry out to you.

  898. Why do you

  899. make me look?

  900. Destruction and

  901. violence are before me.

  902. Therefore,

  903. and he's blaming God.

  904. Now,

  905. he's praising God.

  906. His splendor

  907. was like the sunrise.

  908. Rays flashed

  909. from his hand

  910. where his power

  911. was hidden.

  912. Plagues

  913. were before him.

  914. Pestilence

  915. followed his steps.

  916. So again,

  917. he's looking at

  918. God who forgot

  919. who God is.

  920. Glory

  921. covers the heavens.

  922. He sees God

  923. as not

  924. something that

  925. he had a little idol.

  926. He sees the whole

  927. glory of God.

  928. And then he realizes,

  929. plagues

  930. went before him.

  931. This means that

  932. God

  933. allowed

  934. nasty things

  935. to happen

  936. for the people

  937. to wake up.

  938. Wake up,

  939. people.

  940. This is happening.

  941. You know,

  942. and we,

  943. God,

  944. you know,

  945. like he doesn't

  946. just have a sign

  947. even though he did

  948. have the prophets

  949. and all these things

  950. and blessings.

  951. He still had to

  952. wake them up

  953. and they didn't

  954. wake up.

  955. Amen.

  956. He stood,

  957. shook the earth,

  958. looked,

  959. and made the nations

  960. tremble.

  961. The ancient mountains

  962. crumbled

  963. and the age-old hills

  964. collapsed.

  965. His ways

  966. are eternal.

  967. Again,

  968. natural disasters

  969. are wake-up call.

  970. In Revelation,

  971. many events

  972. will occur.

  973. Today,

  974. we ignore God

  975. and take credit

  976. that man,

  977. that man

  978. isn't responsible

  979. for climate change.

  980. Okay,

  981. interesting fact,

  982. La Palma volcano,

  983. right?

  984. Going off there,

  985. Canary Islands

  986. just off of Africa.

  987. In two months,

  988. more sulfur dioxide

  989. has been emitted

  990. than all the continent

  991. of Europe

  992. in a year.

  993. So,

  994. for man to say,

  995. well,

  996. because we did this,

  997. we're changing

  998. the climate.

  999. Well,

  1000. how do you climate?

  1001. There's almost 50 volcanoes

  1002. going off

  1003. around the world

  1004. right now.

  1005. More than any,

  1006. like they're ramping up

  1007. really quickly.

1008. And for man to say,

  1009. well,

  1010. because I'm burning

1011. a little bit too much gasoline,

  1012. man is in charge.

  1013. Again,

1014. this is kind of like Babylon.

1015. That we will make a tower.

  1016. It's man that's in charge.

  1017. And this is,

  1018. this is what's,

  1019. this is what's happening.

  1020. Now,

1021. were you angry with the rivers?

  1022. Oh,

  1023. Lord,

  1024. was your wrath

  1025. against the streams?

1026. Did you rage against the sea?

  1027. Were you,

1028. when you rode with your horses

  1029. in your vicious,

  1030. a victorious chariots,

  1031. you uncovered your bow,

1032. you called for many arrows,

  1033. you split the world,

  1034. earth with rivers,

  1035. the mountains saw you

  1036. and rather ride,

  1037. torrents of water

  1038. swept by the deep.

  1039. again

1040. time of Noah, great changes

  1041. while things were happening

1042. Noah was on the boat underneath the ocean

  1043. things were happening

  1044. sun and moon

1045. stood still in the heavens, the glint of your

1046. flying arrows, the lightning of your flashing

1047. appears, in wrath you stood

  1048. strode through the earth

1049. and in anger you thrashed the nations

1050. you came out to deliver your people

1051. to save your anointed one, you crushed the leaders

1052. of the land of wickedness, you stripped

1053. them from head to foot, with your own

1054. spear you pierced his head

1055. when his warriors stormed out to scatter

1056. us, gloating as they were about to

1057. devour the wretched who were in hiding

1058. you trampled the sea with your horses

  1059. judgment against

  1060. Babylon

  1061. remember

1062. Jesus came the first time

  1063. as a gentle, humble

1064. man who was nailed to

  1065. nailed and

  1066. who healed and prophesied

  1067. Jesus will come back

  1068. as a warrior

1069. we read already in Revelation 19

  1070. he comes back with

  1071. riding his horse

  1072. vengeful

  1073. now these are the

1074. these are the verses that really caught my eye

  1075. well 16

  1076. 17 does

  1077. 16

1078. I heard and my heart pounded

  1079. my lips

  1080. quivered

  1081. at the sound

  1082. decay

  1083. crept into my bones

  1084. and my legs trembled

1085. yet I wait patiently for the day of calamity

1086. to come on the nations

  1087. invading us

  1088. Habakkuk

1089. was terrified of God's revelation

  1090. you know he knows

1091. that Jerusalem will be destroyed

  1092. the temple destroyed

  1093. people killed

  1094. it was horrible

  1095. but he will

1096. he will wait patiently for

  1097. for the judgment on

  1098. Babylon

  1099. now verse 2nd

1100. we've only got two verses left

1101. this is the one that caught us

  1102. we're combining

  1103. we're out there

  1104. you know

  1105. 12 bushel peas

  1106. we've got nothing

  1107. though the fig tree

  1108. does not bud

  1109. there are no grapes

  1110. on the vine

  1111. though the olive crop

  1112. fails

  1113. and the fields

  1114. produce no food

1115. though there is no sheep

  1116. in the pen

  1117. and no cattle

  1118. in the stalls

  1119. whoa

  1120. can you ever describe

  1121. harvest 2021

  1122. except with those words

  1123. you know we know

1124. how are we going to pay our bills

1125. how are things going to happen

  1126. yeah

  1127. it just

  1128. it's a wake up call

  1129. it's just a wake up call

  1130. God knows these things

  1131. he knows

1132. this is going to happen

  1133. to the Israelites

  1134. the most important verse

  1135. the most important verse

  1136. 18

  1137. yet

  1138. it's a powerful word

  1139. yet

  1140. I will rejoice

  1141. in the Lord

  1142. I will be joyful

  1143. in God my Savior

  1144. the sovereign Lord

  1145. is my strength

  1146. he makes me

  1147. he makes my feet

  1148. like the feet

  1149. of a deer

  1150. and he enables me

1151. to go on the heights

  1152. yet

  1153. even though

  1154. Habakkuk

  1155. is foreseeing

  1156. the destruction

  1157. of Jerusalem

  1158. he is

  1159. seeing

  1160. the destruction

  1161. of the temple

  1162. like the beautiful temple

  1163. that Solomon built

  1164. he's

  1165. seeing

  1166. he's foreseeing

  1167. all the people

  1168. getting killed

  1169. he's foreseeing

  1170. the destruction

  1171. of the cropland

1172. that they're going to starve

  1173. though the fig tree

  1174. does not bud

  1175. no grapes

  1176. on the vine

  1177. though the olive crop

  1178. fails

  1179. the field

  1180. produce no food

  1181. no sheep

  1182. in the pen

  1183. no cattle

  1184. in the stalls

  1185. yet

  1186. I will rejoice

  1187. in the Lord

  1188. I will be joyful

  1189. in God

  1190. my Savior

  1191. the sovereign Lord

  1192. is my strength

  1193. he makes me

  1194. makes my feet

  1195. like the feet

  1196. of a deer

  1197. enables me

1198. to go on the heights

  1199. this verse

  1200. is the climax

  1201. of the chapter

  1202. Habakkuk

  1203. goes from lamenting

  1204. over God

  1205. being

  1206. an inept

  1207. ignorant

  1208. you know

  1209. inept

  1210. in what he does

  1211. ignoring Israel's

  1212. sins

  1213. to realizing

  1214. that no matter

  1215. what happens

  1216. he will

  1217. he will find

  1218. strength

  1219. and joy

  1220. in the Lord

  1221. so Habakkuk's

  1222. revelation

  1223. of who

  1224. God

  1225. is

  1226. enabled them

  1227. to see

  1228. the power

  1229. of God

  1230. and

  1231. you know

  1232. we just

  1233. we just

  1234. we have to

  1235. take that

  1236. to our heart

  1237. who is God

  1238. what are we

  1239. doing

  1240. are we

  1241. are we

  1242. glorifying him

  1243. are we joyous

  1244. in the Lord

  1245. even though

  1246. you know

  1247. bad things

  1248. are happening

  1249. through the ages

  1250. many nations

  1251. have faced

  1252. invasions

  1253. and even

  1254. today

  1255. we look at

  1256. say Ukraine

  1257. Taiwan

  1258. they face

  1259. imminent war

  1260. Israel is

  1261. fighting battles

  1262. over Iran

  1263. you know

  1264. the picture

  1265. of death

  1266. and destruction

  1267. around the world

  1268. is real

  1269. but the promise

  1270. of God

  1271. you know

  1272. God promises

  1273. to be with us

  1274. he promises

  1275. to be our

  1276. we have salvation

  1277. if you believe

  1278. in God

  1279. you have salvation

  1280. and I think

  1281. it hit me

  1282. no matter

  1283. what we face

  1284. we have a God

  1285. who is not an

  1286. idol

  1287. who is not

  1288. idol

  1289. but is an

  1290. active

  1291. savior

  1292. Paul's letter

  1293. to the Philippians

  1294. sums up

  1295. all that we

  1296. can face

  1297. in verse

  1298. chapter

  1299. Philippians

    Philippians 1 chapter mention

  1300. chapter 1

  1301. 19 to 21

  1302. for I know

  1303. that

  1304. through your

  1305. prayers

  1306. and the help

  1307. given by the

  1308. spirit of Jesus

  1309. Christ

  1310. what has

  1311. happened to me

  1312. will turn out

  1313. for my

  1314. deliverance

  1315. I eagerly

  1316. wait

  1317. eagerly expect

  1318. and hope

  1319. that I will

  1320. in no way

  1321. be ashamed

  1322. but will have

  1323. courage

  1324. sufficient courage

  1325. so that

  1326. now as always

  1327. Christ will be

  1328. exalted in my

  1329. body

  1330. whether by life

  1331. or by death

  1332. and that famous

  1333. verse

  1334. for to me

  1335. to live

  1336. is Christ

  1337. and to die

  1338. is gain

  1339. so as

  1340. as we

  1341. go through

  1342. all the

  1343. turmoil

  1344. like in this

  1345. next

  1346. year

  1347. things

  1348. can go

  1349. we may

  1350. face stuff

  1351. that we

  1352. can never

  1353. imagine

  1354. you know

  1355. like when

  1356. wars

  1357. and rumors

  1358. of wars

  1359. earthquakes

  1360. that are

  1361. happening

  1362. tsunamis

  1363. that could

  1364. happen

  1365. all these

  1366. things

  1367. you know

  1368. this virus

  1369. that's going

  1370. or the

  1371. coronavirus

  1372. it could

  1373. get worse

  1374. all these

  1375. things

  1376. we're looking

  1377. at

  1378. man

  1379. it could

  1380. get worse

  1381. we take

  1382. and we know

  1383. that to live

  1384. is Christ

  1385. to die

  1386. is gain

  1387. but I think

  1388. Habakkuk sums

  1389. it up

  1390. best

  1391. as we live

  1392. our lives

  1393. but the

  1394. righteous

  1395. will live

  1396. by his

  1397. faith

  1398. so if there's

  1399. any encouragement

  1400. you can take

  1401. from the

  1402. sermon

  1403. it's the

  1404. righteous

  1405. will live

  1406. by his

  1407. faith

  1408. thank you

  1409. спасибо

  1410. to

  1411. the
