  1. Well, this past week and a bit, I've been reading through the Gospel of Mark.

  2. And I was amazed again at just how quickly Mark takes us from the beginning,

  3. where it all started at Jesus' baptism, to the cross.

  4. It's almost like you can sense the cross looming the whole way through.

  5. In one particular moment, Peter, one of Jesus' disciples,

  6. comes to that wonderful moment of declaring what he believes about Jesus.

  7. Mark 8, verse 29, he says,

    Mark 8:29

  8. You are the Messiah.

  9. How exciting!

  10. You are God's chosen king, promised and prophesied long ago.

  11. And how does Jesus respond to Peter?

  12. Peter, Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.

  13. He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things

  14. and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the teachers of the law,

  15. and that he must be killed.

  16. And after three days, rise again.

  17. Just when the excitement was likely flooding Peter's heart,

  18. you are the king that we've long been waiting for.

  19. Jesus almost seems to snuff it out with these foreboding words.

  20. Yes, but first, the cross.

  21. First, I must suffer, be rejected, and die.

  22. He spoke plainly about this,

  23. and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

  24. But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples,

  25. he rebuked Peter.

  26. Get behind me, Satan, he said.

  27. You do not have in mind the concerns of God,

  28. but merely human concerns.

  29. It's as if Peter's saying,

  30. no, no, Jesus, you mustn't say such things.

  31. You mustn't talk like this.

  32. Let's not talk of suffering or rejection or failure here.

  33. But Jesus responds very strongly,

  34. no, Peter, stop it.

  35. You're wrong.

  36. You do not have in mind the concerns of God,

  37. but merely human concerns.

  38. I got thinking about those words this week.

  39. Peter's expressing the human concerns.

  40. No, you're not going to die.

  41. May it never be.

  42. Don't even talk like this, Jesus.

  43. You're the Messiah.

  44. May you live and reign forever.

  45. However, these are the human concerns.

  46. But God has his concerns in all this.

  47. God has his things that he wants to accomplish here.

  48. Things that he wants to do for his people,

  49. for you, for me.

  50. And those things that he wants to do requires the suffering,

  51. the rejection,

  52. and the death of his dear son first.

  53. The cross looms over Jesus here and now.

  54. Jesus is the Messiah.

  55. He is the king.

  56. Yes.

  57. He is the son of man who, a few verses down,

  58. will come in his father's glory with the holy angels.

  59. Yes.

  60. But first, the cross.

  61. Not long after this moment,

  62. six days later to be exact,

  63. we catch a glimpse of the glory that Jesus will come with at the end.

  64. Or rather, Peter, James, and John do,

  65. as they see Jesus transfigured on the mountain.

  66. A beautiful, even if brief, foretaste

  67. of who Jesus is

  68. and what he will be when he returns.

  69. But then again, not too long after that,

  70. they are traveling the back roads with Jesus through Galilee

  71. and hearing him say this

  72. in Mark chapter 9, 31 and 32.

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  73. The son of man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.

  74. They will kill him.

  75. And after three days, he will rise again.

  76. But they did not understand what he meant

  77. and were afraid to ask him about it.

  78. The cross looms over Jesus here too,

  79. holding back for now the wonder and the joy

  80. of what they saw up on the mountain

  81. when his face shone gloriously before them.

  82. Well, finally, Jesus and his company

  83. begin their journey up to Jerusalem for the last time.

  84. Mark chapter 10, verse 32.

    Mark 10:32

  85. They were on their way up to Jerusalem

  86. with Jesus leading the way.

  87. And the disciples were astonished

  88. while those who followed were afraid.

  89. Again, he took the 12 aside

  90. and told them what was going to happen to him.

  91. We are going up to Jerusalem, he said,

  92. and the son of man will be delivered over

  93. to the chief priests and the teachers of the law.

  94. They will condemn him to death

  95. and will hand him over to the Gentiles

  96. who will mock him

  97. and spit on him,

  98. flog him,

  99. and kill him.

  100. Three days later,

  101. he will rise.

  102. The cross looms over Jesus here as well.

  103. Jesus knew it was coming.

  104. He even knew the details beforehand.

  105. He would be delivered over to the chief priests

  106. and the teachers of the law.

  107. They would condemn him to death

  108. and would hand him over to the Romans,

  109. the Gentiles.

  110. The Roman soldiers would mock him

  111. and spit on him,

  112. flog him,

  113. and kill him.

  114. And yet Jesus marches on

  115. to Jericho,

  116. then to Bethphagia,

  117. then to Bethany.

  118. And finally,

  119. he rides right into the city of Jerusalem

  120. on a colt.

  121. And at first,

  122. all seems quite well.

  123. The crowd with him

  124. makes quite the noise.

  125. Hosanna!

  126. Blessed is he who comes

  127. in the name of the Lord.

  128. Blessed is the coming kingdom

  129. of our father David,

  130. they shout.

  131. Hosanna!

  132. Hosanna!

  133. In the highest heaven!

  134. It was quite the procession.

  135. But it wasn't long

  136. before the excitement

  137. of this procession

  138. gave way

  139. to these somber words

  140. of Jesus

  141. at the Passover meal

  142. later that week.

  143. While they were reclining

  144. at the table,

  145. eating,

  146. he said,

  147. truly,

  148. I tell you,

  149. one of you

  150. will betray me.

  151. One who is eating

  152. with me.

  153. They were saddened

  154. and one by one

  155. they said to him,

  156. surely you don't mean me.

  157. It is one of the twelve,

  158. he replied,

  159. one who dips bread

  160. into the bowl

  161. with me.

  162. The Son of Man

  163. will go

  164. just as it is written

  165. about him.

  166. But woe to that man

  167. who betrays

  168. the Son of Man.

  169. it would be better

  170. for him

  171. if he had not been born.

  172. While they were eating,

  173. Jesus took bread

  174. and when he had given

  175. thanks,

  176. he broke it

  177. and gave it to them

  178. saying,

  179. take it.

  180. This

  181. is my body.

  182. then he took

  183. a cup

  184. and when he had

  185. given thanks,

  186. he gave it to them

  187. and they all

  188. drank from it.

  189. This is my

  190. blood

  191. of the covenant

  192. which is poured

  193. out for many,

  194. he said to them.

  195. Truly,

  196. I tell you,

  197. I will not

  198. drink again

  199. from the fruit

  200. of the vine

  201. until that day

  202. when I drink it

  203. new

  204. in the kingdom

  205. of God.

  206. Here again,

  207. here at the table

  208. with his disciples,

  209. the cross

  210. looms

  211. over Jesus.

  212. The Son of Man

  213. will go

  214. just as it is

  215. written

  216. about him.

  217. I will be

  218. betrayed.

  219. I will die,

  220. says Jesus.

  221. My body

  222. will be broken.

  223. My blood

  224. poured out.

  225. But there's

  226. a reason

  227. it must

  228. go this way.

  229. My death

  230. has a great

  231. purpose

  232. and it's

  233. to secure

  234. a covenant

  235. between God

  236. and many.

  237. To broker

  238. an arrangement,

  239. I will die.

  240. To see to it

  241. that the promises

  242. of God

  243. are kept

  244. to many.

  245. To you.

  246. To me.

  247. My blood

  248. will be poured

  249. out.

  250. Even here

  251. at the table,

  252. Jesus reminds

  253. them,

  254. as he did

  255. time and time

  256. again,

  257. I will rise

  258. again.

  259. But I wonder

  260. if they heard it

  261. that night.

  262. there will

  263. come a day

  264. when I drink

  265. this cup

  266. with you

  267. again

  268. in the

  269. kingdom of

  270. God.

  271. But first,

  272. the cross.

  273. And just as

  274. Jesus had told

  275. them these four

  276. times,

  277. so it went.

  278. He was

  279. betrayed.

  280. He was

  281. delivered over

  282. to the chief

  283. priests

  284. and the teachers

  285. of the law

  286. by Judas,

  287. one of the

  288. twelve.

  289. He was

  290. condemned to

  291. death by

  292. the chief

  293. priests and

  294. the teachers

  295. of the law,

  296. handed over

  297. to the

  298. Gentiles,

  299. the Romans,

  300. and was

  301. mocked by

  302. the soldiers,

  303. spit on,

  304. flogged,

  305. and finally

  306. crucified,

  307. executed as

  308. though he

  309. were a

  310. criminal.

  311. But you

  312. know,

  313. without

  314. Jesus'

  315. suffering

  316. and death,

  317. we'd all

  318. be lost.

  319. We'd have

  320. no hope.

  321. There would

  322. be no

  323. new covenant.

  324. There would

  325. be no

  326. better

  327. arrangement

  328. with God

  329. to be had.

  330. No

  331. forgiveness.

  332. We would

  333. all get

  334. just what

  335. we deserve

  336. from God,

  337. each of

  338. us,

  339. for our

  340. sins.

  341. We could

  342. have no

  343. Messiah

  344. and no

  345. king,

  346. without

  347. first

  348. having

  349. a

  350. cross.

  351. There

  352. came a

  353. moment

  354. before

  355. Jesus

  356. was

  357. handed

  358. over

  359. in the

  360. garden

  361. when he

  362. was

  363. praying

  364. and

  365. pouring

  366. out

  367. his

  368. heart

  369. to

  370. the

  371. father.

  372. In

  373. the

  374. garden,

  375. Mark

  376. tells

  377. us

  378. that

  379. he

  380. fell

  381. to

  382. the

  383. ground

  384. and

  385. prayed

  386. that

  387. if

  388. it

  389. was

  390. possible

  391. the

  392. hour

  393. might

  394. pass

  395. from

  396. him.

  397. Abba,

  398. father,

  399. everything

  400. is

  401. possible

  402. for

  403. you.

  404. Take

  405. this

  406. cup

  407. from

  408. me.

  409. Yet

  410. not

  411. what

  412. I

  413. will,

  414. but

  415. what

  416. you

  417. will.

  418. The

  419. suffering

  420. and the

  421. agony

  422. of

  423. Jesus

  424. on

  425. the

  426. cross

  427. was

  428. horrible

  429. and

  430. Jesus

  431. knew

  432. it

  433. would

  434. be.

  435. But

  436. unlike

  437. Peter,

  438. he

  439. had

  440. in

  441. his

  442. mind

  443. and

  444. in

  445. his

  446. heart

  447. the

  448. concerns

  449. of

  450. God

  451. and

  452. not

  453. just

  454. the

  455. concerns

  456. of

  457. men.

  458. He

  459. prayed,

  460. not

  461. my

  462. will,

  463. but

  464. what

  465. you

  466. will

  467. be

  468. done.

  469. He

  470. bent

  471. his

  472. will

  473. to

  474. the

  475. fathers.

  476. He

  477. submitted

  478. his

  479. wants

  480. and

  481. desires

  482. to

  483. the

  484. fathers

  485. and

  486. he

  487. chose

  488. to

  489. do

  490. what

  491. was

  492. needed,

  493. what

  494. was

  495. required

  496. for

  497. our

  498. salvation,

  499. for

  500. the

  501. salvation

  502. of

  503. his

  504. friends,

  505. the

  506. disciples,

  507. and

  508. for

  509. all

  510. who

  511. would

  512. repent

  513. and

  514. believe

  515. in

  516. him.

  517. And

  518. then

  519. he

  520. went

  521. through

  522. with

  523. it.

  524. He

  525. suffered

  526. and

  527. died.

  528. Do

  529. you

  530. know

  531. that

  532. God

  533. has

  534. you

  535. in

  536. his

  537. concerns?

  538. Do

  539. you

  540. know

  541. that

  542. Jesus

  543. has

  544. you

  545. in

  546. his

  547. heart?

  548. That

  549. both

  550. father

  551. and

  552. son

  553. love

  554. you

  555. like

  556. nobody

  557. in

  558. this

  559. world

  560. ever

  561. could.

  562. Week

  563. after week

  564. as I

  565. read my

  566. Bible,

  567. I see

  568. again

  569. just how

  570. far

  571. short

  572. I fall

  573. of God's

  574. holy and

  575. perfect

  576. standard.

  577. I

  578. see my

  579. own

  580. sins

  581. glaring

  582. but

  583. the

  584. cross

  585. of our

  586. Savior

  587. Jesus

  588. does

  589. for me

  590. what I

  591. can't

  592. do

  593. for

  594. myself.

  595. It

  596. gives me

  597. forgiveness,

  598. hope,

  599. the

  600. guarantee

  601. of all

  602. that God

  603. has

  604. promised

  605. for his

  606. people.

  607. Eternal

  608. life

  609. and

  610. citizenship

  611. in this

  612. glorious

  613. kingdom of

  614. God

  615. that will

  616. soon

  617. break

  618. forth

  619. upon

  620. our

  621. world.

  622. This is

  623. what we

  624. remember

  625. when we

  626. come to

  627. the

  628. Lord's

  629. table

  630. and

  631. pass

  632. out

  633. the

  634. bread

  635. and

  636. the

  637. cup.

  638. We

  639. remember

  640. the

  641. love

  642. of

  643. our

  644. Lord.

  645. We

  646. remember

  647. the

  648. mercy

  649. of

  650. God.

  651. We

  652. remember

  653. the

  654. cross

  655. that

  656. came

  657. before

  658. the

  659. crown

  660. and

  661. saved

  662. us

  663. forever.

  664. if you

  665. believe

  666. this

  667. with

  668. all

  669. your

  670. heart

  671. this

  672. table

  673. is

  674. for

  675. you.

  676. And

  677. in

  678. these

  679. next

  680. moments

  681. as we

  682. pass

  683. out

  684. the

  685. elements

  686. and

  687. partake

  688. I

  689. invite

  690. you

  691. to

  692. partake

  693. with

  694. us

  695. if

  696. this

  697. is

  698. your

  699. faith.

  700. If

  701. it's

  702. not

  703. if

  704. you're

  705. not

  706. sure

  707. I

  708. would

  709. ask

  710. that

  711. you

  712. would

  713. abstain.

  714. we'll

  715. wait

  716. until

  717. everyone

  718. has

  719. been

  720. served

  721. and

  722. once

  723. we

  724. all

  725. have

  726. been

  727. served

  728. we'll

  729. partake

  730. together

  731. in

  732. unison.

  733. Take

  734. the

  735. next

  736. few

  737. minutes

  738. to

  739. pray

  740. quietly

  741. and

  742. to

  743. reflect

  744. on

  745. what

  746. the

  747. Lord

  748. Jesus

  749. has

  750. done

  751. for

  752. us.

  753. O

  754. O

  755. O

  756. O
