  1. If you have your Bible with you, you can open it up to John chapter 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  2. John chapter 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  3. We're picking up where we left off last Sunday.

  4. And last Sunday we heard about a special dinner that Jesus had with Mary and Martha and Lazarus

  5. in the village of Bethany, just three kilometers outside of Jerusalem.

  6. And we heard about how Mary poured out on Jesus her very expensive perfume, probably her

  7. most valuable possession as a gift of love and worship.

  8. We also heard about how Jesus' whereabouts has again become known to not just the religious

  9. leaders, but to many of the people of Jerusalem.

  10. And how they, finding out about Jesus being there in Bethany, have now come out to see

  11. both Jesus and Lazarus and how many were coming to believe in Jesus.

  12. Let's pick up the story in John chapter 12, verse 12.

    John 12:12

  13. John chapter 12, verse 12.

    John 12:12

  14. The next day, the great crowd that had come for the festival heard that Jesus was on his

  15. way to Jerusalem.

  16. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, Hosanna, blessed is he who comes

  17. in the name of the Lord, blessed is the King of Israel.

  18. Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it as it is written.

  19. Do not be afraid, daughter Zion.

  20. See, your King is coming, seated on a donkey's colt.

  21. The triumphal entry.

  22. This is a big moment in the story of Jesus.

  23. John tells us that it happened soon after his visit in Bethany.

  24. Either the day after the dinner or the day after the crowd arrived to see Jesus, they came.

  25. And then this next day was the triumphal entry.

  26. John tells us here in verse 12 that a great crowd came out from Jerusalem to meet him.

  27. But notice which crowd.

  28. This is not the same crowd back in verse 9.

  29. This crowd is a different crowd.

  30. They're the ones who have come to Jerusalem for the Passover generally.

  31. And now they've heard that Jesus is now on his way out of Bethany to Jerusalem.

  32. And so hearing this, they now make their way out to meet Jesus.

  33. John tells us in the next verse,

  34. they took palm branches and went out to meet him.

  35. So picture this in your mind.

  36. Word is spreading from house to house

  37. that Jesus is just down the road and now he's on his way right now into the city of Jerusalem.

  38. This is the same Jesus that's been the talk of the whole city.

  39. The one that they've all been asking about.

  40. Where is he?

  41. Is he coming to the festival?

  42. And as the word is spreading

  43. that Jesus is now on his way,

  44. these people are running out of their houses.

  45. They're finding palm branches,

  46. whether from trees in the city or just outside the city.

  47. Maybe even climbing them, some of them.

  48. Breaking off the branches

  49. and then with branches tucked under their arms,

  50. they're running down the road

  51. towards Bethany

  52. to meet Jesus.

  53. Well, what's with the palm branches?

  54. The only significance of the palm branches

  55. that's in the Bible that we hear about

  56. has to do with a different festival,

  57. the festival of tabernacles.

  58. But this is Passover.

  59. The general consensus among Christian scholars and historians is this.

  60. About 200 years before this took place,

  61. palm branches became a national symbol in Israel.

  62. They were used when they rededicated the temple to the Lord

  63. about 200 years before this.

  64. And then about 20 years after that,

  65. a man named Simon the Maccabee

  66. drove the Syrian forces

  67. out of the Jerusalem citadel.

  68. And when that happened,

  69. there was celebration and music

  70. and the crowds grabbed palm branches

  71. and waved them.

  72. It was a moment of victory,

  73. a moment of national liberation.

  74. And that all took place

  75. in the time between the Old and the New Testaments.

  76. But now here again,

  77. Israel and Jerusalem

  78. are not free and independent.

  79. This time it's not the Syrians,

  80. but the Romans who are in power.

  81. But there is great hope by many

  82. that this man,

  83. who is now on his way into the city,

  84. is the long-awaited Messiah.

  85. The king who will reign over Israel

  86. and liberate us from the rule of the Romans,

  87. who will lead us to victory.

  88. And so the palm branches

  89. probably are a kind of a tangible expression

  90. of this hope

  91. that Jesus will lead us to triumph

  92. again as a nation.

  93. For some,

  94. that yes,

  95. he is the Messiah

  96. we've been waiting for.

  97. And this feeling comes out

  98. in the words of the crowd.

  99. They were shouting,

  100. Hosanna!

  101. Blessed is he who comes

  102. in the name of the Lord.

  103. Blessed is the king of Israel.

  104. The cry Hosanna

  105. is a Hebrew expression.

  106. And it literally means,

  107. save!

  108. Or give salvation now.

  109. It actually comes from the Psalms.

  110. And it was a passage

  111. that every Jew would have known

  112. because it was used often in festivals.

  113. Let me read a little bit

  114. from Psalm 118.

  115. This is from Psalm 118,

    Psalms 118:19

  116. verse 19.

  117. And this appears on the screen in prose,

  118. but it's actually poetic.

  119. It's like a song.

  120. So,

  121. Open for me the gates of the righteous.

  122. I will enter and give thanks to the Lord.

  123. This is the gate of the Lord

  124. through which the righteous may enter.

  125. I will give you thanks

  126. for you answered me.

  127. You have become my salvation.

  128. The stone the builders rejected

  129. has become the cornerstone.

  130. The Lord has done this

  131. and it is marvelous in our eyes.

  132. The Lord has done it this very day.

  133. Let us rejoice today

  134. and be glad.

  135. Lord,

  136. save us.

  137. That save us is literally

  138. Hosanna.

  139. And the Lord is literally

  140. Yahweh,

  141. the name of God.

  142. Yahweh,

  143. save us.

  144. Yahweh,

  145. grant us success.

  146. Blessed is he who comes

  147. in the name of Yahweh.

  148. From the house of Yahweh,

  149. we bless you.

  150. Yahweh is God

  151. and he has made his light shine on us

  152. with bows in hand.

  153. Join in the festal procession

  154. up to the horns

  155. of the altar.

  156. These were the words

  157. of the song

  158. that was sung long ago

  159. and still sung in Israel

  160. at the time.

  161. Great song of joy.

  162. Song of worship

  163. and praise.

  164. He is our deliverer,

  165. the Lord.

  166. The one who saves us.

  167. And so we cry,

  168. Hosanna.

  169. Yes,

  170. Lord,

  171. save us.

  172. This phrase is not just a plea

  173. for deliverance.

  174. It's also an acknowledgement

  175. that we have one

  176. who is mighty,

  177. who is strong,

  178. who is powerful enough

  179. to save us from our enemies.

  180. And so it became,

  181. by this time,

  182. very much

  183. a statement of praise,

  184. a word of praise.

  185. And as the people

  186. cry,

  187. Hosanna,

  188. oh,

  189. there's a lot of meaning now

  190. in this moment

  191. as they're saying this

  192. while Jesus

  193. is walking down the road.

  194. Perhaps

  195. for some

  196. in saying this word,

  197. there's that plea

  198. for salvation.

  199. Though probably

  200. for many

  201. who used it this way,

  202. not the kind of salvation

  203. that Jesus

  204. has been talking about.

  205. More like it's the

  206. come and

  207. liberate us

  208. from the Romans,

  209. save us,

  210. deliver us

  211. kind of salvation.

  212. But there is also

  213. in this word

  214. the praise part of it.

  215. And I think

  216. perhaps

  217. some of these people

  218. are getting it.

  219. Yes,

  220. Jesus is the Messiah.

  221. He is the one

  222. who can save us,

  223. who can deliver us.

  224. Not just from the Romans,

  225. but in every sense,

  226. he's the one.

  227. Hosanna.

  228. Hosanna.

  229. Hosanna.

  230. The second thing

  231. that John

  232. notes them saying,

  233. blessed is he

  234. who comes

  235. in the name

  236. of the Lord,

  237. in the name

  238. of Yahweh,

  239. our God.

  240. This is good.

  241. This is true.

  242. This is who Jesus is.

  243. And then finally,

  244. he reports them saying,

  245. blessed is the king

  246. of Israel.

  247. this final proclamation

  248. makes it clear

  249. what this moment

  250. is all about.

  251. Let's not forget

  252. that there's already

  253. a man sitting

  254. on a throne of sorts

  255. in Jerusalem.

  256. Let's not forget

  257. that there's already

  258. a Roman governor

  259. over this region

  260. under Caesar,

  261. the Roman emperor,

  262. who has laid claim

  263. to this territory

  264. as his own.

  265. So this is a big deal.

  266. What the people

  267. are doing

  268. and saying

  269. in this moment

  270. is actually

  271. kind of risky.

  272. They are making

  273. this into

  274. what very much

  275. looks like

  276. a royal

  277. coronation procession

  278. for Jesus,

  279. a new king,

  280. parading him

  281. all the way

  282. into Jerusalem,

  283. an occupied nation

  284. that seems

  285. that seems to

  286. already have

  287. a king.

  288. But there's

  289. something about

  290. this procession

  291. that's very

  292. different than

  293. others.

  294. Look at how

  295. Jesus comes

  296. into the city

  297. in verse 14.

  298. Jesus found

  299. a young donkey

  300. and sat on it

  301. as it is written,

  302. do not be afraid,

  303. daughter Zion.

  304. See,

  305. your king is coming,

  306. seated

  307. on a donkey's

  308. colt.

  309. Jesus does not

  310. come in

  311. riding on a

  312. war horse

  313. with an army

  314. ready for battle

  315. behind him.

  316. This is not

  317. at all

  318. a military

  319. procession

  320. as if he's

  321. now coming

  322. to rule

  323. or to take

  324. over the city

  325. by force.

  326. He comes

  327. on a donkey,

  328. a lowly

  329. and relatively

  330. gentle creature

  331. which symbolizes

  332. peace.

  333. John tells us

  334. that this

  335. was the

  336. fulfillment

  337. of the

  338. word of

  339. Zechariah

  340. long ago.

  341. Zechariah

    Zechariah 9:9

  342. chapter 9

  343. verses 9

  344. and 10.

  345. God spoke

  346. through Zechariah

  347. and this is

  348. what Zechariah

  349. said.

  350. Rejoice

  351. greatly,

  352. daughter Zion.

  353. Shout,

  354. daughter Jerusalem.

  355. see your

  356. king comes

  357. to you

  358. righteous

  359. and victorious

  360. lowly

  361. and riding

  362. on a donkey

  363. on a colt

  364. the foal

  365. of a donkey.

  366. The prophecy

  367. goes on.

  368. I will take

  369. away the chariots

  370. from Ephraim

  371. and the war

  372. horses from

  373. Jerusalem

  374. and the battle

  375. bow will be

  376. broken.

  377. He will

  378. proclaim peace

  379. to the nations.

  380. His rule

  381. will extend

  382. from sea

  383. to sea

  384. and from

  385. the river

  386. to the ends

  387. of the earth.

  388. So God

  389. long ago

  390. through the

  391. prophet Zechariah

  392. told his people

  393. that the Messiah

  394. would come.

  395. The king

  396. would come

  397. just like this.

  398. Lowly,

  399. gentle,

  400. riding on a donkey.

  401. And I love

  402. what John says

  403. about this

  404. in verse 16.

  405. He says

  406. at first

  407. his disciples,

  408. this includes

  409. him by the way,

  410. did not

  411. understand all

  412. this.

  413. Only after

  414. Jesus was

  415. glorified

  416. did they

  417. realize

  418. that these

  419. things

  420. in Zechariah

  421. had been

  422. written about

  423. Jesus

  424. and that

  425. these things

  426. had been

  427. done to him.

  428. I love this.

  429. You know,

  430. it's not like

  431. John and the

  432. other disciples

  433. at the beginning

  434. of Jesus'

  435. ministry

  436. all sat down

  437. with Jesus

  438. and they

  439. opened up

  440. the scriptures

  441. and they

  442. made a list

  443. of all

  444. the prophecies

  445. that Jesus

  446. was to

  447. fulfill

  448. and then

  449. said,

  450. all right,

  451. let's get

  452. some prophecies

  453. fulfilled.

  454. What do we

  455. got to do?

  456. Check,

  457. check,

  458. check.

  459. No.

  460. John freely

  461. admits,

  462. we didn't

  463. even know

  464. what the deal

  465. was with

  466. the donkey.

  467. Jesus,

  468. why a donkey?

  469. Why a young

  470. donkey?

  471. It wasn't

  472. until later.

  473. Can you

  474. imagine that

  475. after Jesus

  476. had died

  477. and rose

  478. and ascended?

  479. There they

  480. are hearing

  481. the words

  482. of Zechariah

  483. or reading

  484. them.

  485. Look at

  486. this.

  487. This is

  488. exactly what

  489. happened.

  490. We were

  491. there.

  492. We saw

  493. him.

  494. You guys,

  495. you were

  496. the ones

  497. that went

  498. and got

  499. the donkey

  500. for him.

  501. You were

  502. fulfilling

  503. prophecy

  504. and you

  505. didn't

  506. even know

  507. it.

  508. Amazing.

  509. And that's

  510. how it

  511. was.

  512. In fact,

  513. probably not

  514. just with

  515. this one

  516. incident,

  517. but probably

  518. all over

  519. the scriptures

  520. in the Old

  521. Testament,

  522. as the

  523. disciples went

  524. back,

  525. as they

  526. looked into

  527. the scriptures,

  528. here,

  529. there,

  530. everywhere,

  531. what they

  532. had just

  533. witnessed

  534. with Jesus

  535. was being

  536. proclaimed and

  537. described hundreds

  538. of years before

  539. any of it came

  540. to pass.

  541. And many of

  542. these things,

  543. they were

  544. fulfilled and

  545. in that moment

  546. the disciples

  547. didn't even have

  548. a clue that

  549. this is that

  550. fulfillment right

  551. here.

  552. We're part

  553. of it.

  554. That's how it

  555. works with

  556. God.

  557. God,

  558. he really

  559. does know

  560. the end

  561. from the

  562. beginning.

  563. And he

  564. is able to

  565. work and

  566. ensure that

  567. none of his

  568. words fall

  569. to the ground,

  570. that every

  571. single one of

  572. them is

  573. fulfilled,

  574. regardless of

  575. the actions

  576. or the

  577. decisions that

  578. the characters

  579. in the story

  580. are taking.

  581. It's awesome.

  582. It's evidence

  583. that he is the

  584. Almighty and that

  585. Jesus is the

  586. one sent

  587. from him.

  588. We'll come

  589. back another

  590. time to what

  591. it means for

  592. Jesus to be

  593. glorified.

  594. Jesus is going

  595. to bring that

  596. up in chapter

  597. 17.

  598. But for now,

  599. let's come down

  600. to verse 17.

  601. John goes on,

  602. he says,

  603. Now the crowd

  604. that was with

  605. him when he

  606. called Lazarus

  607. from the tomb

  608. and raised him

  609. from the dead

  610. continued to

  611. spread the word.

  612. Many people,

  613. because they

  614. had heard that

  615. he had performed

  616. this sign,

  617. went out to

  618. meet him.

  619. Now there's a

  620. bit of a

  621. question here

  622. as to which

  623. crowd is which,

  624. which crowd is

  625. when,

  626. and which

  627. crowd is where.

  628. Some see in

  629. these words

  630. two crowds,

  631. one traveling

  632. out from

  633. Bethany with

  634. Jesus and

  635. one traveling

  636. out from

  637. Jerusalem to

  638. meet Jesus.

  639. Others also

  640. see two crowds,

  641. but it's one

  642. who had been

  643. at Lazarus'

  644. resurrection and

  645. ever since has

  646. been spreading

  647. the word,

  648. and one who

  649. is now going

  650. out to meet

  651. Jesus because

  652. of the word

  653. that they

  654. heard.

  655. And if that's

  656. the case,

  657. then how many

  658. of the ones

  659. who were at

  660. Lazarus'

  661. resurrection came

  662. out yesterday

  663. to Bethany,

  664. and how many

  665. are now coming

  666. out now?

  667. And you can

  668. kind of see

  669. where this all

  670. gets mixed up

  671. a little bit.

  672. And a lot of

  673. this seems to

  674. hinge on a,

  675. I guess there's

  676. a manuscript

  677. variant.

  678. There's two

  679. different streams

  680. of manuscripts,

  681. and it's the

  682. difference of a

  683. single Greek

  684. letter as to

  685. the word,

  686. whether it's

  687. this word or

  688. that word.

  689. Is it that the

  690. crowd being with

  691. Jesus when he

  692. raised Lazarus

  693. from the dead,

  694. that crowd was

  695. testifying?

  696. Or is it the

  697. crowd being with

  698. Jesus was

  699. testifying that he

  700. raised Lazarus

  701. from the dead?

  702. And it's difficult

  703. to say.

  704. But here's what is

  705. clear.

  706. John wants us to

  707. know, why are all

  708. these people doing

  709. something like this?

  710. I mean, running

  711. out of the city

  712. with palm branches

  713. to declare Jesus

  714. king.

  715. This is serious.

  716. The man that

  717. they're going out

  718. to welcome and

  719. declare his king

  720. is a wanted man.

  721. And John tells us

  722. here in verse 18,

  723. one of the big

  724. factors in people's

  725. minds is this.

  726. Many people,

  727. because they had

  728. heard that he had

  729. performed this sign,

  730. that's raising

  731. Lazarus from the

  732. dead.

  733. Because they heard

  734. that, they went

  735. out to meet him.

  736. Literally, for this

  737. reason, the crowd

  738. met Jesus, because

  739. they heard this sign

  740. he had done.

  741. So however you

  742. interpret it, you've

  743. got two groups of

  744. people.

  745. One of these groups

  746. is testifying about

  747. how Jesus called

  748. Lazarus out of the

  749. tomb and raised him

  750. from the dead.

  751. And the other group

  752. is hearing this

  753. testimony and saying,

  754. wow, that's

  755. amazing.

  756. If that's the

  757. case, this could

  758. be the Messiah.

  759. And so out they

  760. go to meet him.

  761. This is key.

  762. Without the

  763. resurrection of

  764. Lazarus, there

  765. might not have been

  766. a triumphal entry.

  767. It was the critical

  768. event leading up to

  769. this moment.

  770. And it's, you know,

  771. as I was thinking

  772. about this, it's

  773. difficult to say,

  774. what are all these

  775. people thinking in

  776. the crowd?

  777. Are some genuinely

  778. believing in Jesus

  779. that he is the

  780. Messiah?

  781. Probably.

  782. Are some more

  783. interested in him as

  784. a political savior and

  785. king?

  786. Probably.

  787. Are some just going

  788. out there to see the

  789. miracle man?

  790. Probably.

  791. For some is real

  792. faith beginning to

  793. grow?

  794. Probably.

  795. We can only guess.

  796. We don't know.

  797. But it caused quite

  798. the stir that day as

  799. they paraded him into

  800. the city, declaring

  801. him to be the king

  802. that comes in the

  803. name of Yahweh, with

  804. shouts and singing.

  805. Verse 19.

  806. So the Pharisees said

  807. to one another, see,

  808. this is getting us

  809. nowhere.

  810. Look how the whole

  811. world has gone after

  812. him.

  813. I love this.

  814. The Pharisees are

  815. exasperated.

  816. They're so

  817. frustrated.

  818. Let's look back for a

  819. second to chapter 11

  820. verse 57.

  821. There John tells us

  822. that the chief priests

  823. and the Pharisees had

  824. given orders that

  825. anyone who found out

  826. where Jesus was should

  827. report it so that they

  828. might arrest him.

  829. Are the people

  830. listening to the

  831. orders of the

  832. Pharisees and the

  833. chief priests?

  834. Not at all.

  835. All of these people,

  836. this massive crowd,

  837. they're completely

  838. disregarding the

  839. orders of the

  840. religious leaders.

  841. In fact, they're

  842. doing the very

  843. opposite.

  844. Instead of reporting

  845. Jesus, they're going

  846. out to welcome him

  847. as king.

  848. So I guess the

  849. Pharisees are

  850. frustrated.

  851. frustrated.

  852. They've lost, it

  853. seems, what little

  854. control they had over

  855. the people.

  856. And what do we do

  857. with all these people

  858. now?

  859. If they don't follow

  860. us, if they don't

  861. obey us, if they don't

  862. submit to us, how do you

  863. bring consequences and

  864. instill a fear of

  865. authority, a respect of

  866. authority into a group

  867. that's so large?

  868. They're very frustrated.

  869. This is getting us

  870. nowhere.

  871. They've been trying to

  872. turn the people against

  873. Jesus and right now in

  874. this moment, it seems

  875. like they have utterly

  876. failed.

  877. Look how the whole world

  878. has gone after him.

  879. Seems like the kind of

  880. exaggeration that we

  881. sometimes do when we get

  882. really angry or really

  883. emotional.

  884. Everything is going

  885. wrong.

  886. The whole world has

  887. gone after him.

  888. Well, not the whole

  889. world was, but it sure

  890. felt like that to the

  891. Pharisees that day.

  892. But there's another

  893. sense in which there is

  894. some truth to this

  895. frustrated remark of the

  896. Pharisees.

  897. Passover was a big time

  898. of year.

  899. Historical records

  900. suggest that the number

  901. of people in the city

  902. of Jerusalem at Passover

  903. time swelled up to

  904. somewhere between one to

  905. three million people.

  906. And where did all these

  907. people come from?

  908. They didn't just come

  909. from all over Israel.

  910. They came from all over

  911. the world, so to speak.

  912. There's a list in Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  913. chapter 2 of the various

  914. nations that were

  915. represented at Pentecost,

  916. a different festival.

  917. It's probably a good place

  918. to start as we think

  919. about where people may

  920. have traveled just to be

  921. here in Jerusalem for this

  922. Passover, as far as Persia,

  923. Mesopotamia, Asia Minor,

  924. all over Egypt, Libya,

  925. Greece, even Rome.

  926. It was people from all

  927. over the place that now

  928. made up this great crowd

  929. that had come for the

  930. festival.

  931. We're hearing the

  932. testimony of how Jesus

  933. raised Lazarus from the

  934. dead and now running out

  935. and bringing him in.

  936. A very diverse group.

  937. And so in a sense,

  938. indeed, the whole world

  939. is going after Jesus

  940. just as it should.

  941. But you can start to see

  942. here how the religious

  943. leaders get to a place

  944. where they are so consumed

  945. with hate and anger

  946. and jealousy towards Jesus

  947. that they would stop at

  948. nothing to take him out.

  949. Well, what do we do

  950. with this whole account?

  951. What's in this for us

  952. here in 2022?

  953. As I was thinking about

  954. this, you know, for a

  955. moment here in the story,

  956. it was popular to be a

  957. Jesus follower.

  958. After all the disciples

  959. and Jesus had been through

  960. and the times nearly

  961. arrested and nearly stoned,

  962. for a brief moment,

  963. it's suddenly popular

  964. to be a follower of Jesus.

  965. The disciples, I imagine,

  966. were drinking this in.

  967. How refreshing.

  968. After all we've seen

  969. and been through,

  970. to hear this massive crowd

  971. singing praise

  972. and celebrating

  973. all in favor of Jesus,

  974. our King,

  975. our Messiah.

  976. I'm sure it was a day

  977. of rejoicing.

  978. But by the end of the week,

  979. it's not going to feel

  980. like this

  981. at all.

  982. Jesus will be dead,

  983. falsely accused,

  984. mistreated,

  985. and murdered.

  986. His death demanded

  987. by the crowd

  988. in Jerusalem.

  989. And suddenly,

  990. it will not be popular

  991. at all

  992. to be a Jesus follower

  993. or to claim him

  994. as King.

  995. And I got thinking

  996. about how it's been

  997. in our world since then.

  998. We've seen this popularity pattern

  999. repeated throughout history,

  1000. haven't we?

  1001. In different places,

  1002. God has been gracious.

  1003. There's been renewal.

  1004. There's been revival

  1005. here and there.

  1006. Whole nations,

  1007. at times,

  1008. have declared themselves Christian,

  1009. have helped

  1010. to translate the Bible.

1011. New nations have been founded

  1012. by settlers,

1013. many of whom were Christians.

  1014. We might think back

1015. to the days of Billy Graham.

  1016. Celebrated around the world

  1017. as a preacher

  1018. of the gospel.

  1019. Even the Russians

  1020. invited him

  1021. to come over

1022. and preach the gospel there

  1023. because they didn't want

  1024. to be left out.

  1025. And there's this

  1026. sort of popular pride

  1027. for the moment

  1028. in being Christian.

  1029. but then suddenly

  1030. it's gone

1031. and it's no longer popular

1032. to be a Jesus follower.

  1033. Think of the disciples

1034. here in the midst of this.

1035. One day in the crowd

  1036. proclaiming Jesus is King.

  1037. Days later

  1038. in the crowd

  1039. cowering in fear

  1040. while the crowd

  1041. demands that

  1042. the King

  1043. be executed.

1044. and as I was thinking

  1045. about this

  1046. I got thinking

  1047. it doesn't really matter

  1048. whether Jesus

  1049. is popular

  1050. today

  1051. or how popular

1052. it is to be a follower

  1053. of his today.

  1054. All that matters

  1055. today

  1056. is the truth

  1057. of whether he is

  1058. the King

  1059. of God's choosing

  1060. the Messiah.

  1061. It doesn't matter

  1062. what the world

  1063. around us

  1064. thinks about Jesus

  1065. or is saying

  1066. about Jesus.

  1067. All that matters

  1068. is whether he is

  1069. indeed

  1070. worthy

  1071. of our hosannas.

1072. Let me take a step

  1073. back from that.

  1074. We do care

  1075. about the people

  1076. around us

  1077. who don't believe

  1078. that Jesus

  1079. is the Messiah.

  1080. We want them

  1081. to believe

  1082. as we do

  1083. but what I'm getting

  1084. at is this

  1085. will we let

  1086. the opinions

  1087. of others

  1088. of our world

  1089. of the people

  1090. around us

  1091. will we let

  1092. their opinions

  1093. of Jesus

  1094. soften

  1095. or dampen

  1096. our hosannas.

  1097. Are you the kind

  1098. of Jesus follower

  1099. who only loves

1100. to join in the procession

  1101. and sing the praise

  1102. when everybody's doing it

  1103. and it seems

  1104. like a good time?

  1105. Is the King

  1106. of God's choosing

  1107. not worthy

  1108. of our loudest praise

  1109. our highest praise

  1110. today

  1111. and every day

  1112. no matter

  1113. what the world

  1114. thinks

  1115. and what the world

  1116. is doing?

  1117. Let's go back

  1118. for a moment

  1119. to Zechariah

    Zechariah 9 chapter mention

  1120. chapter 9.

  1121. Rejoice greatly

  1122. daughter Zion

  1123. shout

  1124. daughter Jerusalem

  1125. see

  1126. your King

  1127. comes to you

  1128. righteous

  1129. and victorious

  1130. lowly

  1131. and riding

  1132. on a donkey

  1133. on a colt

  1134. the foal

  1135. of a donkey

  1136. but what else

  1137. does Zechariah

  1138. say

  1139. about this King?

  1140. He says

  1141. he will proclaim

  1142. peace

  1143. to the nations

  1144. his rule

  1145. will extend

  1146. from sea to sea

  1147. and from the river

  1148. to the ends

  1149. of the earth

  1150. do you hear that?

  1151. this same King

  1152. who rode into Jerusalem

  1153. on a donkey

  1154. will someday come

  1155. to proclaim

  1156. peace

  1157. to the nations

  1158. and his rule

  1159. will know

  1160. no bounds

  1161. from sea to sea

  1162. he will be King

  1163. to the ends

  1164. of the earth

  1165. but are you

  1166. going to wait

  1167. till then

  1168. to sing

  1169. Hosanna?

  1170. Listen

  1171. every Sunday

  1172. when we come together

  1173. we have the opportunity

  1174. and the privilege

  1175. to lift our voices

  1176. in song

  1177. and in praise

  1178. and to sing

  1179. Hosanna

  1180. and blessing

  1181. to our King

  1182. whether it's popular

  1183. in the world

  1184. or not

  1185. doesn't matter

  1186. whether it's popular

  1187. to be in church

  1188. on Sunday mornings

  1189. in Davidson

  1190. doesn't matter

1191. Jesus is the same King

  1192. back then

  1193. today

  1194. and forever

  1195. so let's not wait

  1196. until Palm Sunday

1197. to make a joyful noise

  1198. to rejoice greatly

1199. let's do it every Sunday

  1200. let's not worry about

  1201. what that person

  1202. sitting over there

  1203. in the church

  1204. will think

  1205. if they hear us

  1206. singing at the top

  1207. of our lungs

  1208. to Jesus

1209. Jesus is worthy of it

  1210. he's the King

  1211. before whom

  1212. every person

  1213. will one day

  1214. bow down

  1215. think about that

  1216. everybody in the Canadian

  1217. government today

  1218. will one day

  1219. bow down

  1220. before him

  1221. the Queen of England

  1222. who's never bowed down

1223. to anyone in her life

  1224. probably

  1225. will bow down

  1226. before Jesus

1227. the President of the United States

  1228. the entire Assembly

  1229. of the United Nations

  1230. every person

  1231. represented in that group

  1232. will bow down

  1233. someday

  1234. to Jesus

  1235. he's coming back

  1236. to this earth

1237. and he will rule it all

  1238. but let's not wait

  1239. until that day

1240. to let the whole world

  1241. know

  1242. the truth

  1243. of our great King

  1244. every Sunday

  1245. should be Palm Sunday

  1246. for us

  1247. till he comes

  1248. again

  1249. to rule

  1250. to Zion

  1251. or

  1252. takes us

  1253. to be with him

  1254. Hosanna

  1255. in the highest

  1256. our King

  1257. has come

  1258. and he's coming

  1259. again

  1260. let's pray

  1261. Father in heaven

  1262. what a great hope

  1263. we have

  1264. what an awesome

  1265. thing you are doing

  1266. help us to keep

  1267. our eyes on that

  1268. in these days

  1269. it's tough

  1270. there are so many

  1271. things that pull

  1272. our attention away

1273. but you are the one

  1274. who saves us

  1275. and Jesus

  1276. you are our King

  1277. I pray that you

  1278. would give us

  1279. eyes of faith

  1280. to see that

  1281. and to live

  1282. in light of that

  1283. and you're coming

  1284. again

  1285. today

  1286. and every day

  1287. glory to you

  1288. Amen
