  1. Well, sometimes as we're reading our Bibles, we come to passages that are difficult.

  2. And as I've said before, there's different reasons for why they're difficult.

  3. The Bible was originally written in different languages,

  4. and so sometimes translation makes it difficult, bringing that over into English.

  5. Other times the translation is good, but it's what's spoken about that's difficult to understand.

  6. God tells us about spiritual realities, being born again by the Spirit, how the Holy Spirit works in our lives.

  7. And sometimes those things are difficult for us to get our heads around.

  8. But sometimes it's not an issue of translation or understanding what the passage says.

  9. It's that the passage itself and what it says is difficult to accept.

  10. Maybe it offends us.

  11. Or it says something that we don't really like or don't want to hear.

  12. Well, we are the Davidson Community Bible Church,

  13. and we do believe that God has spoken through these pages, every word.

  14. And He doesn't make mistakes.

  15. So when we get to those passages, we come with a little bit of fear and trembling,

  16. but we've got to take our time to stop and to listen and consider what the Lord has said to us.

  17. So that's one of those passages that we've got before us today.

  18. We're in the story of Jesus as told by John.

  19. We're still in John chapter 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  20. If you have a Bible with you, I won't have anything on the screen this morning.

  21. I didn't get time to do that, but ask if you just follow along in your Bible.

  22. There's also the pew Bibles in front of you, the black books in the seats there.

  23. And here's where we're at in the story.

  24. Jesus has just come into Jerusalem.

  25. Triumphal entry.

  26. Most of you know the story.

  27. And it's the final week leading up to his death.

  28. And he's had a conversation with some of the people, the Jews, there in the city,

  29. which we've been following along in chapter 12.

  30. And last week we heard about how he was pleading with them

  31. to believe in the light while they have the light,

  32. while they have the opportunity, before that window of opportunity closes.

  33. And this is the end of that conversation.

  34. John tells us how it ended in verse 36 of John chapter 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  35. When Jesus had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.

  36. So we don't really know where Jesus went,

  37. but if we look at the other Gospels, we can kind of piece things together.

  38. During this week leading up to his death,

  39. Jesus would come into the city of Jerusalem during the day.

  40. And he would teach the people.

  41. He would speak to the people.

  42. And then oftentimes in the evening, he would make his way out of the city.

  43. And there's a couple different places he would hang out with,

  44. oftentimes his disciples.

  45. The Mount of Olives, some of the gardens and groves around there.

  46. And then eventually probably make his way out to Bethany,

  47. where maybe he stayed.

  48. We don't know for sure if he slept at the house of Mary and Martha and Lazarus.

  49. But that was kind of his pattern.

  50. So Jesus has been in the spotlight.

  51. He's come into the city.

  52. There's been this discussion with the crowds.

  53. And now he goes off the radar, but not for long,

  54. just probably for the evening.

  55. And we'll see him again soon.

  56. But John now takes a moment to kind of step back and address us,

  57. the people who are reading his account,

  58. and give us some help to understand what's going on here.

  59. I mean, we just heard Jesus talking to this crowd.

  60. And in the midst of this, or right leading into this conversation,

  61. God spoke in an audible voice to Jesus.

  62. And we might be wondering,

  63. how is it that the people could hear that

  64. and walk away from that and still not believe?

  65. Well, John is now going to tell us a little bit

  66. and try to give us some help to understand

  67. what's really going on here between Jesus and the people.

  68. Verse 37.

  69. John writes this,

  70. Even after Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence,

  71. they still would not or did not believe in him.

  72. Even after Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence,

  73. they still would not believe in him.

  74. This is quite the statement.

  75. And in the original language,

  76. which is a little bit more flexible with word order,

  77. they would often emphasize things

  78. by just moving it right up to the front of the sentence.

  79. And what's emphasized here is so many.

  80. Even after Jesus had performed so many signs,

  81. John says,

  82. in their presence.

  83. Let's think about that for a moment.

  84. In their presence.

  85. Literally, in front of them, before them.

  86. In the sight of them.

  87. Now, this doesn't mean, of course,

  88. that each person there was hovering right over top of Jesus

  89. as he performed each miracle.

  90. But it does mean that these things were close enough to them,

  91. that they were done openly enough,

  92. that virtually everybody in Jerusalem

  93. probably knows somebody

  94. who has been affected by the miracles that Jesus did,

  95. by the signs that he performed,

  96. by the healings.

  97. John's already told us about three people

  98. in his gospel

  99. in Jerusalem or the vicinity.

  100. We heard about the man at the Pool of Bethesda

  101. who couldn't walk for 38 years.

  102. Jesus healed him.

  103. We heard about the man who had been born blind

  104. in John chapter 9.

    John 9 chapter mention

  105. Jesus gave him sight.

  106. And then we heard, just recently,

  107. about Lazarus,

  108. who lived in Bethany,

  109. just outside the city.

  110. Many of the people in Jerusalem

  111. had been to his funeral.

  112. And there were also a crowd of them

  113. who were out there

  114. that witnessed his resurrection from the dead.

  115. So that's just three.

  116. But John says,

  117. not just three,

  118. but so many signs in their presence.

  119. It reminds me of what we read

  120. way back near the beginning.

  121. John chapter 2,

  122. verse 32.

  123. Sorry.

  124. John chapter 2, verse 23.

    John 2:23

  125. This was three years ago.

  126. At the Passover in Jerusalem,

  127. at the very beginning of Jesus' ministry,

  128. it says this,

  129. Now while he was in Jerusalem

  130. at the Passover festival,

  131. many people saw the signs he was performing

  132. and believed in his name.

  133. So the people of Jerusalem

  134. are no strangers

  135. to what Jesus has been doing.

  136. It's not as though they just

  137. heard about the signs.

  138. Oh yeah, way over in Galilee

  139. he did that.

  140. No, right here in Jerusalem,

  141. Jesus had been performing signs.

  142. Nicodemus was one of the religious leaders

  143. who saw them.

  144. We know that you are a man

  145. who has come from God

  146. because who could perform

  147. do the things you're doing

  148. if God were not with him,

  149. he said.

  150. In fact,

  151. when we bring all the gospel accounts together,

  152. we see that Jesus

  153. has been doing

  154. so many signs,

  155. so many miracles,

  156. so many healings,

  157. it's just,

  158. you couldn't even begin

  159. to number them.

  160. I mean, consider this,

  161. when people started

  162. to go out to him,

  163. he would heal them,

  164. word was spreading,

  165. this was back in the early days

  166. of Jesus,

  167. more people would hear about that

  168. and if they had some kind of malady,

  169. they were going out,

  170. people were flocking out to Jesus

  171. from all over the nation.

  172. It says in Matthew 4,

    Matthew 4:23

  173. verse 23,

  174. he was healing

  175. all their diseases,

  176. all their sicknesses,

  177. all their sicknesses,

  178. with the exception of

  179. Nazareth,

  180. Jesus' hometown,

  181. where it says he only did

  182. a few miracles,

  183. and with the couple times

  184. where the Pharisees

  185. came right up to his face

  186. and said,

  187. show us a sign

  188. and then we'll believe.

  189. And of course,

  190. Jesus wouldn't do it then.

  191. With the exception

  192. of those two things,

  193. Jesus has been doing

  194. miracles,

  195. healings,

  196. signs,

  197. left,

  198. right,

  199. and center.

  200. In Galilee,

  201. in Jerusalem,

  202. wherever he goes,

  203. this is the picture

  204. that we get

  205. from the Gospels.

  206. John chapter 7,

    John 7:31

  207. verse 31.

  208. Even in Jerusalem,

  209. they acknowledge this.

  210. still,

  211. many in the crowd

  212. believed in him.

  213. They said,

  214. when the Messiah comes,

  215. will he perform

  216. more signs

  217. than this man?

  218. In other words,

  219. like how many more

  220. do we need to see?

  221. Like,

  222. it's obvious,

  223. isn't it?

  224. How many would we expect

  225. the Messiah to do?

  226. He's done so many.

  227. Even the religious leaders

  228. could not deny

  229. that Jesus had done

  230. many signs.

  231. They too

  232. witnessed some of them.

  233. John chapter 11,

    John 11:47

  234. verse 47.

  235. At the meeting

  236. of the Sanhedrin,

  237. they asked,

  238. what are we accomplishing?

  239. Here is this man

  240. performing

  241. many signs.

  242. Isn't that something?

  243. even Jesus' opponents

  244. admitted

  245. that he'd been

  246. not just,

  247. you know,

  248. a couple different

  249. recoveries,

  250. coincidentally,

  251. for different people.

  252. Many signs,

  253. they said.

  254. We might wonder,

  255. well,

  256. why did John

  257. only tell us

  258. about a few

  259. that he's done

  260. in Jerusalem?

  261. Well,

  262. as we hear

  263. at the very end

  264. of the book

  265. of John,

    John 20:30

  266. chapter 20,

  267. verse 30,

  268. Jesus performed

  269. many other signs

  270. in the presence

  271. of his disciples

  272. which are not

  273. recorded in this book.

  274. And again,

  275. at the very end

  276. of the gospel,

  277. the last thing

  278. John tells us,

  279. Jesus did many

  280. other things as well.

  281. If every one of them

  282. were written down,

  283. I suppose that even

  284. the whole world

  285. would not have room

  286. for the books

  287. that would be written.

  288. And so,

  289. John is not

  290. exaggerating

  291. when he says

  292. so many signs

  293. were done

  294. in their presence.

  295. Miracles,

  296. healings,

  297. probably everybody

  298. there in Jerusalem

  299. knew of at least

  300. one person,

  301. if not,

  302. had, you know,

  303. a direct connection

  304. to some person

  305. who had been touched

  306. by the life

  307. of Jesus,

  308. by the healing

  309. of Jesus.

  310. And yet,

  311. this is the sad

  312. statement

  313. that John

  314. gives us.

  315. They still

  316. would not

  317. believe in him.

  318. Literally,

  319. it's did not.

  320. They still

  321. did not

  322. believe in him.

  323. What a sad

  324. statement.

  325. We might wonder,

  326. why?

  327. How could this be?

  328. You might think

  329. of yourself

  330. in their shoes,

  331. like if I was

  332. seeing all these

  333. things,

  334. I'd believe.

  335. We're a little

  336. biased because

  337. most of us

  338. already believe

  339. in Jesus.

  340. How could it be

  341. that they saw

  342. all those miracles

  343. of Jesus,

  344. healings,

  345. signs,

  346. and yet did not

  347. believe,

  348. would not

  349. listen to him?

  350. Well,

  351. John

  352. actually

  353. gives an answer

  354. here in verse

  355. 38 to 40.

  356. And this is where

  357. it gets difficult.

  358. They still

  359. would not

  360. believe in him.

  361. Verse 38,

  362. this was to

  363. fulfill the word

  364. of Isaiah the prophet,

  365. Lord,

  366. who has believed

  367. our message?

  368. And to whom

  369. has the arm of the Lord

  370. been revealed?

  371. So John

  372. tells us that

  373. people did not

  374. believe Jesus

  375. in order that

  376. prophecy would be

  377. fulfilled.

  378. Really,

  379. there's two ways

  380. to take that.

  381. How do those

  382. thoughts link

  383. together?

  384. There's two ways.

  385. In order that,

  386. or so that,

  387. the word that

  388. Isaiah spoke

  389. long ago

  390. would be fulfilled.

  391. Or some people,

  392. not the majority,

  393. but some people

  394. suggest that

  395. it's,

  396. they did not

  397. believe with

  398. the result

  399. that the word

  400. of Isaiah the

  401. prophet would

  402. be fulfilled.

  403. I think we

  404. kind of gravitate

  405. towards that,

  406. that one a little

  407. more.

  408. It seems to get

  409. God off the hook

  410. a little bit.

  411. The other,

  412. in order that

  413. the word of

  414. the prophets

  415. be fulfilled,

  416. almost seems to

  417. implicate God

  418. a little bit.

  419. It almost seems

  420. to suggest that

  421. maybe he was

  422. working or

  423. doing something

  424. that he had

  425. a purpose for

  426. them not

  427. believing in

  428. all of this.

  429. And so we

  430. might,

  431. we might wonder,

  432. well,

  433. what's going on?

  434. What do you

  435. mean here,

  436. John?

  437. Which one is

  438. it?

  439. If we keep

  440. following what

  441. John says,

  442. though,

  443. it probably

  444. becomes pretty

  445. clear.

  446. I'm going to

  447. read it again,

  448. starting from

  449. the top.

  450. Even after

  451. Jesus had

  452. performed so

  453. many signs in

  454. their presence,

  455. they still

  456. did not

  457. believe in

  458. him.

  459. This was to

  460. fulfill the

  461. word of

  462. Isaiah the

  463. prophet,

  464. Lord,

  465. who has

  466. believed our

  467. message?

  468. And to

  469. whom has

  470. the arm of

  471. the Lord

  472. been revealed?

  473. For this

  474. reason,

  475. says John,

  476. they could

  477. not believe

  478. because,

  479. as Isaiah

  480. says elsewhere,

  481. he has

  482. blinded their

  483. eyes and

  484. hardened their

  485. hearts,

  486. so they can

  487. neither see

  488. with their

  489. eyes nor

  490. understand with

  491. their hearts

  492. nor turn.

  493. And I

  494. would heal

  495. them.

  496. This is

  497. where the

  498. passage gets

  499. difficult.

  500. Verse 39,

  501. especially,

  502. for this

  503. reason,

  504. says John,

  505. they could

  506. not believe.

  507. They could

  508. not believe.

  509. You can

  510. look it up

  511. in all of

  512. the major

  513. English

  514. translations.

  515. It says the

  516. same thing.

  517. they could

  518. not believe.

  519. Christian

  520. standard

  521. Bible,

  522. relatively new

  523. translation,

  524. it actually

  525. says what

  526. could not

  527. means.

  528. It says they

  529. were unable

  530. to believe.

  531. believe.

  532. And then the

  533. reason.

  534. Because,

  535. as Isaiah

  536. says,

  537. he has

  538. blinded

  539. their eyes

  540. and hardened

  541. their hearts.

  542. signs.

  543. Maybe even

  544. now the

  545. questions are

  546. starting to

  547. rise in

  548. your own

  549. mind.

  550. Well,

  551. but what

  552. about,

  553. how,

  554. what,

  555. how could,

  556. before we

  557. get to the

  558. questions,

  559. are you

  560. hearing what

  561. John is

  562. saying?

  563. for this

  564. reason,

  565. they could

  566. not believe.

  567. That's the

  568. people that

  569. saw his

  570. signs.

  571. Because,

  572. he has

  573. blinded

  574. their eyes

  575. and hardened

  576. their hearts.

  577. Maybe the

  578. first question

  579. on your mind

  580. is,

  581. well,

  582. would God

  583. do that?

  584. would he

  585. send Jesus

  586. with a

  587. message,

  588. and that

  589. message is,

  590. believe in

  591. me,

  592. and at the

  593. same time,

  594. harden the

  595. hearts of

  596. the people

  597. that Jesus

  598. was sent

  599. to?

  600. Blind the

  601. eyes of the

  602. people that

  603. he was sent

  604. to?

  605. I mean,

  606. what's going

  607. on here?

  608. I don't know

  609. how else to

  610. read this,

  611. but it

  612. seems that

  613. that's what's

  614. going on

  615. here.

  616. I mean,

  617. look back

  618. up to

  619. verse 36.

  620. Jesus is

  621. there pleading

  622. with the

  623. people.

  624. He's saying,

  625. believe in

  626. the light

  627. while you

  628. have the

  629. light.

  630. And then

  631. just write

  632. down the

  633. page.

  634. For this

  635. reason,

  636. they could

  637. not believe.

  638. Could not

  639. believe.

  640. Because he

  641. has blinded

  642. their eyes

  643. and hardened

  644. their hearts.

  645. Is it

  646. possible

  647. that there's

  648. more going

  649. on here

  650. between

  651. Jesus

  652. and the

  653. people

  654. than meets

  655. the eye?

  656. I think

  657. so.

  658. I think

  659. so.

  660. The question

  661. is not,

  662. would God

  663. do it?

  664. The question

  665. is,

  666. why?

  667. We might

  668. do well

  669. to remember

  670. that there's

  671. another time

  672. that God

  673. has done

  674. something like

  675. this.

  676. We've been

  677. learning about

  678. it with the

  679. kids and

  680. alive.

  681. God sent

  682. Moses to

  683. Pharaoh.

  684. Even before

  685. he went,

  686. I will

  687. harden

  688. Pharaoh's

  689. heart.

  690. And he

  691. will not

  692. say yes.

  693. But still

  694. give the

  695. message.

  696. Give the

  697. command.

  698. And he

  699. did.

  700. And Pharaoh

  701. did exactly

  702. what God

  703. said he

  704. would.

  705. He hardened

  706. his heart.

  707. He refused

  708. to obey.

  709. And as the

  710. plagues kept

  711. coming,

  712. at some

  713. point you

  714. would think,

  715. man,

  716. Pharaoh's

  717. got to

  718. get it

  719. here.

  720. But then

  721. it starts

  722. telling us

  723. in those

  724. latter

  725. plagues,

  726. it was

  727. God who

  728. was hardening

  729. the heart

  730. of Pharaoh,

  731. making his

  732. heart stubborn

  733. so that he

  734. would not

  735. respond.

  736. And yet

  737. he still

  738. sent Moses

  739. each time

  740. and said,

  741. give him

  742. the command,

  743. let my

  744. people go.

  745. That's

  746. strange,

  747. isn't it?

  748. He's

  749. working on

  750. both sides

  751. of the

  752. equation.

  753. Is that

  754. what's going

  755. on here

  756. with Jesus

  757. and the

  758. people?

  759. I think

  760. so.

  761. But why?

  762. Why would

  763. God do

  764. that?

  765. I think

  766. the key

  767. comes as

  768. we start

  769. looking into

  770. a little

  771. bit of

  772. Isaiah's

  773. prophecy.

  774. That's

  775. who he

  776. quotes,

  777. the prophet

  778. Isaiah.

  779. So I

  780. encourage you

  781. to flip

  782. back.

  783. We're just

  784. going to

  785. look at it

  786. a little

  787. bit.

  788. I'll

  789. remind you

  790. of the

  791. story of

  792. Isaiah a

  793. little bit.

  794. I'm not

  795. going to

  796. tell the

  797. whole thing.

  798. You probably

  799. know the

  800. story of

  801. Israel.

  802. As a

  803. nation,

  804. on the

  805. whole,

  806. they would

  807. continually

  808. turn away

  809. from God.

  810. And though

  811. there was

  812. times of

  813. renewal and

  814. revival,

  815. where they

  816. turned to

  817. the Lord,

  818. then they

  819. would turn

  820. away again.

  821. And they

  822. just kept

  823. spiraling

  824. downward,

  825. further and

  826. further away

  827. from God.

  828. The Ten

  829. Commandments,

  830. which we're

  831. about to

  832. learn about

  833. and alive,

  834. the Israelites

  835. more and

  836. more were

  837. doing the

  838. very opposite

  839. of those

  840. things.

  841. Worshiping

  842. other gods.

  843. There was

  844. corruption in

  845. the leadership.

  846. There was

  847. wickedness all

  848. over the

  849. place.

  850. God was

  851. sending the

  852. prophets to

  853. plead with

  854. the people,

  855. to repent,

  856. to turn

  857. away from

  858. their sin.

  859. We're going

  860. to look

  861. actually at

  862. 2 Chronicles

    2 Chronicles 36:15

  863. 36,

  864. verse 15.

  865. This just

  866. tells the

  867. end of the

  868. story of

  869. the era of

  870. the kings.

  871. This is

  872. still a ways

  873. after Isaiah

  874. prophesied,

  875. but this is

  876. how it went.

  877. It's a good

  878. summary.

  879. 2 Chronicles

  880. 36,

  881. 15.

  882. Yahweh,

  883. the God

  884. of their

  885. ancestors,

  886. sent word

  887. to them

  888. through his

  889. messengers,

  890. that's the

  891. prophets,

  892. again and

  893. again,

  894. because he

  895. had pity

  896. on his

  897. people and

  898. on his

  899. dwelling place.

  900. But they

  901. mocked God's

  902. messengers,

  903. despised his

  904. words,

  905. and scoffed

  906. at his

  907. prophets until

  908. the wrath of

  909. Yahweh was

  910. aroused against

  911. his people,

  912. and there was

  913. no remedy.

  914. He brought

  915. up against

  916. them the

  917. king of

  918. the Babylonians

  919. who killed

  920. their young

  921. men with

  922. the sword

  923. in the

  924. sanctuary,

  925. and who

  926. did not

  927. spare young

  928. men or

  929. young women,

  930. the elderly

  931. or the

  932. infirm.

  933. God gave

  934. them all

  935. into the

  936. hands of

  937. Nebuchadnezzar.

  938. Verse 19,

  939. they set

  940. fire to

  941. God's temple

  942. and broke

  943. down the

  944. wall of

  945. Jerusalem.

  946. They burned

  947. all the

  948. palaces and

  949. destroyed

  950. everything of

  951. value there,

  952. and the

  953. survivors,

  954. many of

  955. them,

  956. most of

  957. them,

  958. were carried

  959. off into

  960. exile.

  961. Babylon.

  962. Isaiah

  963. came long

  964. before this,

  965. but do you

  966. hear what the

  967. word of the

  968. Lord is saying?

  969. It's not as

  970. though God

  971. wasn't patiently

  972. pleading with

  973. the people all

  974. along.

  975. He was.

  976. He sent

  977. prophet after

  978. prophet after

  979. prophet after

  980. prophet,

  981. but God was

  982. saying to

  983. them,

  984. eventually there

  985. will come a

  986. time when

  987. enough is

  988. enough.

  989. I will not

  990. tolerate

  991. wickedness and

  992. sin forever.

  993. That's what's

  994. going on with

  995. the story of

  996. Isaiah.

  997. Isaiah chapter

    Isaiah 1:18

  998. 1 verse 18,

  999. probably at the

  1000. beginning of

  1001. Isaiah's ministry,

  1002. Isaiah himself

  1003. even pleads with

  1004. the people to

  1005. repent.

  1006. God speaks

  1007. through him.

  1008. In Isaiah

    Isaiah 1:18

  1009. 1 verse 18,

  1010. he says,

  1011. Come now,

  1012. let us settle

  1013. the matter,

  1014. says the

  1015. Lord.

  1016. Though your

  1017. sins are like

  1018. scarlet,

  1019. they shall be

  1020. white as snow.

  1021. Though they are

  1022. red as crimson,

  1023. they shall be

  1024. like wool.

  1025. If you are

  1026. willing and

  1027. obedient,

  1028. you will eat

  1029. the good things

  1030. of the land.

  1031. But if you

  1032. resist and

  1033. rebel,

  1034. you will be

  1035. devoured by

  1036. the sword.

  1037. Even there

  1038. through Isaiah,

  1039. God was

  1040. pleading with

  1041. the people

  1042. saying,

  1043. Come,

  1044. repent,

  1045. humble yourself.

  1046. Let's settle

  1047. this.

  1048. I will forgive

  1049. you of all

  1050. the wicked

  1051. things you

  1052. have done.

  1053. You can

  1054. continue to

  1055. remain in

  1056. the land

  1057. even.

  1058. But if

  1059. not,

  1060. he gave

  1061. the warning,

  1062. there will

  1063. come a

  1064. time,

  1065. when enough

  1066. is enough.

  1067. Punishment

  1068. will come.

  1069. He's a

  1070. holy God.

  1071. He will

  1072. not tolerate

  1073. sin or

  1074. wickedness

  1075. forever.

  1076. And so

  1077. when we

  1078. come to

  1079. Isaiah

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  1080. chapter 6,

  1081. this is

  1082. that moment

  1083. when enough

  1084. is enough.

  1085. Some of

  1086. you may

  1087. know the

  1088. story.

  1089. Isaiah

  1090. has a

  1091. vision of

  1092. the Lord

  1093. seated on

  1094. a throne

  1095. in glory.

  1096. I won't

  1097. go through

  1098. the whole

  1099. thing.

  1100. But at

  1101. some point

  1102. here,

  1103. the Lord

  1104. speaks to

  1105. Isaiah.

  1106. Or I

  1107. guess he

  1108. speaks just

  1109. generally and

  1110. asks the

  1111. question in

  1112. verse 8.

  1113. Then I

  1114. heard the

  1115. voice of

  1116. the Lord

  1117. saying,

  1118. whom shall

  1119. I send?

  1120. And who

  1121. will go

  1122. for us?

  1123. And I

  1124. said,

  1125. Isaiah,

  1126. here am I.

  1127. Send me.

  1128. Isaiah

  1129. volunteers,

  1130. verse 9,

  1131. go and

  1132. tell this

  1133. people,

  1134. be ever

  1135. hearing,

  1136. but never

  1137. understanding.

  1138. Be ever

  1139. seeing,

  1140. but never

  1141. perceiving.

  1142. Make the

  1143. heart of

  1144. this people

  1145. calloused.

  1146. Make their

  1147. ears dull

  1148. and close

  1149. their eyes.

  1150. Otherwise,

  1151. they might see

  1152. with their

  1153. eyes,

  1154. hear with

  1155. their ears,

  1156. understand with

  1157. their hearts,

  1158. and turn

  1159. and be

  1160. healed.

  1161. It's a

  1162. sobering

  1163. word.

  1164. This is your

  1165. assignment,

  1166. Isaiah.

  1167. This is your

  1168. mission.

  1169. The time has

  1170. come when

  1171. enough is

  1172. enough.

  1173. And this is

  1174. my judgment.

  1175. This is my

  1176. punishment.

  1177. Deaf ears,

  1178. blind eyes,

  1179. calloused

  1180. hearts.

  1181. Isaiah

  1182. says,

  1183. for how

  1184. long,

  1185. Lord?

  1186. And God

  1187. answers in

  1188. verse 11,

  1189. until the

  1190. cities lie

  1191. ruined and

  1192. without

  1193. inhabitant,

  1194. until the

  1195. houses are

  1196. left deserted

  1197. and the

  1198. fields ruined

  1199. and ravaged,

  1200. until the

  1201. Lord has

  1202. sent everyone

  1203. far away and

  1204. the land is

  1205. utterly forsaken.

  1206. And though a

  1207. tenth remains in

  1208. the land,

  1209. it will again

  1210. be laid

  1211. waste.

  1212. There's only a

  1213. glimmer of hope

  1214. that comes at

  1215. the end.

  1216. But as the

  1217. terebinth and

  1218. oak leave

  1219. stumps when

  1220. they are cut

  1221. down, so the

  1222. holy seed will

  1223. be the stump in

  1224. the land.

  1225. So there came

  1226. a time in

  1227. Israel's story

  1228. when eventually

  1229. God said,

  1230. enough is

  1231. enough.

  1232. There's no

  1233. turning back.

  1234. There's no

  1235. opportunity from

  1236. this point

  1237. forward to

  1238. repent and

  1239. to change

  1240. punishment.

  1241. It's coming

  1242. for your

  1243. sin.

  1244. And I think

  1245. this is what

  1246. John is talking

  1247. about.

  1248. He's saying

  1249. here in

  1250. John chapter

    John 12 chapter mention

  1251. 12,

  1252. the reason the

  1253. people here

  1254. that are

  1255. witnessing all

  1256. these signs

  1257. could not

  1258. believe,

  1259. were unable

  1260. to believe,

  1261. is because

  1262. God is doing

  1263. the same

  1264. thing here

  1265. and now

  1266. today,

  1267. in Jesus'

  1268. day,

  1269. with the

  1270. Jewish people

  1271. as he was

  1272. doing back

  1273. then.

  1274. it had

  1275. come about

  1276. that by

  1277. God's own

  1278. determination,

  1279. for many

  1280. of them,

  1281. the verdict

  1282. was enough

  1283. is enough.

  1284. now I don't

  1285. know how

  1286. that worked

  1287. for each

  1288. individual

  1289. person.

  1290. Maybe it

  1291. was on an

  1292. individual

  1293. basis.

  1294. Maybe some

  1295. of them,

  1296. they'd been

  1297. hearing the

  1298. preaching of

  1299. John the

  1300. baptizer,

  1301. and then

  1302. they just

  1303. made the

  1304. choice to

  1305. harden their

  1306. hearts.

  1307. No,

  1308. no,

  1309. no,

  1310. no.

  1311. But eventually

  1312. comes that

  1313. moment where

  1314. God hardens

  1315. their hearts

  1316. and closes

  1317. the window

  1318. of opportunity

  1319. that they

  1320. have to

  1321. believe and

  1322. to respond.

  1323. We talked

  1324. about that a

  1325. little bit

  1326. last week.

  1327. Jesus is

  1328. pleading with

  1329. them,

  1330. believe in

  1331. the light

  1332. while you

  1333. have the

  1334. light.

  1335. There is a

  1336. window of

  1337. opportunity

  1338. for all

  1339. of us.

  1340. But it

  1341. seems that

  1342. that window

  1343. of opportunity

  1344. for some,

  1345. for the

  1346. Jewish people,

  1347. was closed

  1348. even in the

  1349. midst of

  1350. Jesus'

  1351. ministry.

  1352. Not for

  1353. all of

  1354. them.

  1355. You'll

  1356. remember how

  1357. John began

  1358. the gospel.

  1359. He said

  1360. that Jesus

  1361. came to

  1362. his own

  1363. and his

  1364. own did

  1365. not receive

  1366. him.

  1367. But as

  1368. many as

  1369. received him

  1370. who believed

  1371. in his name,

  1372. he gave the

  1373. right to

  1374. become children

  1375. of God.

  1376. So the

  1377. general,

  1378. on the

  1379. whole,

  1380. story of

  1381. Israel was

  1382. they rejected

  1383. their Messiah,

  1384. but not

  1385. everyone.

  1386. Not

  1387. everyone did.

  1388. One more

  1389. passage that

  1390. kind of

  1391. confirms or

  1392. brings this

  1393. into focus

  1394. well for

  1395. us is in

  1396. Romans chapter

    Romans 11:7

  1397. 11,

  1398. verse 7.

  1399. In fact,

  1400. all of

  1401. Romans 9-11

  1402. really digs

  1403. into this

  1404. issue,

  1405. the story

  1406. of Israel.

  1407. How is it

  1408. that God

  1409. is going to

  1410. keep his

  1411. promises and

  1412. his covenants

  1413. with Israel

  1414. and yet they

  1415. rejected the

  1416. Messiah?

  1417. Many of

  1418. them on

  1419. the whole.

  1420. That's the

  1421. whole topic

  1422. of this

  1423. section,

  1424. Romans 9-11.

  1425. We won't

  1426. look at it

  1427. all,

  1428. but just

  1429. jump in

  1430. in verse

  1431. 7.

  1432. Listen to

  1433. this.

  1434. Paul says,

  1435. What then?

  1436. What the

  1437. people of

  1438. Israel sought

  1439. so earnestly

  1440. they did

  1441. not obtain.

  1442. The elect

  1443. among them

  1444. did,

  1445. but the

  1446. others were

  1447. hardened,

  1448. as it is

  1449. written.

  1450. God gave

  1451. them a

  1452. spirit of

  1453. stupor,

  1454. eyes that

  1455. could not

  1456. see,

  1457. and ears

  1458. that could

  1459. not hear

  1460. to this

  1461. very day.

  1462. Paul is

  1463. reflecting

  1464. back on

  1465. why did

  1466. all the

  1467. children of

  1468. Israel

  1469. reject the

  1470. Messiah?

  1471. He explains

  1472. that there

  1473. was a

  1474. remnant,

  1475. just like in

  1476. the Old

  1477. Testament days,

  1478. that was

  1479. chosen by

  1480. grace and

  1481. enabled to

  1482. see, to

  1483. believe, but

  1484. that the

  1485. others were

  1486. hardened.

  1487. A punishment

  1488. from God.

  1489. He was

  1490. saying enough

  1491. is enough.

  1492. The window

  1493. of opportunity,

  1494. at least in

  1495. that generation

  1496. for those

  1497. people, was

  1498. closed.

  1499. You could

  1500. think about

  1501. the kinds

  1502. of people

  1503. that Jesus

  1504. ran into

  1505. during his

  1506. ministry.

  1507. The Pharisees,

  1508. the leaders

  1509. of Israel,

  1510. corrupt.

  1511. They had

  1512. hard hearts

  1513. to Jesus.

  1514. It wasn't

  1515. that God

  1516. just out of

  1517. nowhere,

  1518. decided,

  1519. well, some

  1520. of you guys

  1521. are going

  1522. to get

  1523. mercy and

  1524. others not.

  1525. No, they

  1526. had had

  1527. opportunity,

  1528. and yet they

  1529. had been

  1530. resisting and

  1531. refusing to

  1532. listen all

  1533. along the

  1534. way.

  1535. And so it

  1536. seems that

  1537. what John is

  1538. saying here is

  1539. that even

  1540. as the signs

  1541. kept increasing,

  1542. Jesus kept

  1543. doing more,

  1544. it was obvious

  1545. right in front

  1546. of their

  1547. faces.

  1548. many of

  1549. them could

  1550. not believe

  1551. because God

  1552. had already

  1553. said enough

  1554. is enough

  1555. with some

  1556. in that

  1557. generation

  1558. and hardened

  1559. their hearts

  1560. and blinded

  1561. their eyes.

  1562. These are

  1563. sobering

  1564. words.

  1565. What's there

  1566. here for us?

  1567. I want to

  1568. draw us

  1569. back to

  1570. what we

  1571. talked about

  1572. last Sunday.

  1573. There is a

  1574. window of

  1575. opportunity for

  1576. each one of

  1577. us to put

  1578. our faith in

  1579. Jesus, to

  1580. respond to

  1581. God's gracious

  1582. offer of

  1583. salvation, his

  1584. plea to

  1585. believe.

  1586. all of us

  1587. have sinned,

  1588. we have all

  1589. done wrong,

  1590. none of us

  1591. deserves

  1592. salvation.

  1593. In fact, we

  1594. all deserve

  1595. the opposite.

  1596. And that

  1597. window,

  1598. it's really

  1599. God who

  1600. determines

  1601. how long

  1602. that will

  1603. stay open

  1604. for each

  1605. one of

  1606. us.

  1607. And I

  1608. think deep

  1609. down inside

  1610. we all

  1611. know that,

  1612. that window

  1613. closes, we

  1614. know for

  1615. sure when

  1616. we die,

  1617. there's no

  1618. opportunities

  1619. after we

  1620. die to

  1621. believe, to

  1622. receive

  1623. salvation.

  1624. But I

  1625. think we're

  1626. seeing here

  1627. that God

  1628. even has

  1629. the sovereign

  1630. right to

  1631. close that

  1632. window even

  1633. sooner in

  1634. our lives.

  1635. It's a

  1636. sobering

  1637. thought.

  1638. So what

  1639. do we do

  1640. with this?

  1641. Well, if

  1642. you're here

  1643. this morning

  1644. and you

  1645. have not

  1646. put your

  1647. faith in

  1648. Jesus and

  1649. received him

  1650. as your

  1651. Lord and

  1652. Savior, I

  1653. want to

  1654. encourage you,

  1655. today is

  1656. the day to

  1657. believe.

  1658. Not tomorrow,

  1659. not someday.

  1660. We don't know

  1661. how long we

  1662. have before

  1663. God closes

  1664. that door of

  1665. opportunity for

  1666. us.

  1667. As God

  1668. says elsewhere

  1669. in his word,

  1670. today if you

  1671. hear his

  1672. voice, do

  1673. not harden

  1674. your hearts.

  1675. Believe in

  1676. the light while

  1677. you have the

  1678. light so that

  1679. you may become

  1680. children of

  1681. light.

  1682. Most of us

  1683. here in this

  1684. room have made

  1685. that decision

  1686. already.

  1687. God

  1688. and I hope

  1689. that you

  1690. know that

  1691. because of

  1692. Jesus being

  1693. in Christ,

  1694. born of

  1695. his spirit,

  1696. you are

  1697. safe.

  1698. You are

  1699. secure.

  1700. This blinding

  1701. of eyes and

  1702. hardening of

  1703. hearts will

  1704. never come to

  1705. you.

  1706. Jesus paid the

  1707. punishment and

  1708. that covers you.

  1709. you are

  1710. secure forever.

  1711. But it

  1712. doesn't mean

  1713. that there is

  1714. no place for

  1715. fear, for

  1716. reverence towards

  1717. this holy God.

  1718. My mind kept

  1719. going back to

  1720. Philippians chapter

  1721. two verse

  1722. 11 and we

  1723. will end with

  1724. this.

  1725. Sorry,

  1726. two verse

  1727. 12.

  1728. Paul writes

  1729. this to the

  1730. believers in

  1731. Philippi.

  1732. Therefore, my

  1733. dear friends,

  1734. as you have

  1735. always obeyed,

  1736. not only in

  1737. my presence,

  1738. but now much

  1739. more in my

  1740. absence,

  1741. continue to

  1742. work out your

  1743. salvation with

  1744. fear and

  1745. trembling.

  1746. For it is

  1747. God who

  1748. works in

  1749. you to

  1750. will and

  1751. to act in

  1752. order to

  1753. fulfill his

  1754. good purpose.

  1755. even though

  1756. we are safe

  1757. and secure

  1758. in Christ,

  1759. let us

  1760. not forget

  1761. that we

  1762. have a

  1763. holy God

  1764. and we

  1765. ought not

  1766. to go on

  1767. doing the

  1768. things that

  1769. Christ died

  1770. to atone

  1771. for,

  1772. those sins,

  1773. those wicked

  1774. things.

  1775. Paul says,

  1776. continue to

  1777. obey.

  1778. God worked

  1779. in the

  1780. heart of

  1781. Pharaoh and

  1782. hardened it.

  1783. It seems

  1784. that he

  1785. also worked

  1786. in the

  1787. hearts of

  1788. some who

  1789. were listening

  1790. to Jesus

  1791. and hardened

  1792. them.

  1793. But,

  1794. to those of

  1795. us who are

  1796. in Christ,

  1797. it says that

  1798. God works

  1799. in us

  1800. to will

  1801. and to

  1802. act in

  1803. order to

  1804. fulfill his

  1805. good purpose.

  1806. we're not

  1807. on our

  1808. own in

  1809. this.

  1810. God is

  1811. the one

  1812. who enables

  1813. us,

  1814. gives us

  1815. power to

  1816. obey,

  1817. to do

  1818. what is

  1819. good,

  1820. to do

  1821. what is

  1822. right.

  1823. And so,

  1824. that's what I

  1825. take from

  1826. these words.

  1827. We have a

  1828. holy God,

  1829. a free

  1830. God,

  1831. a God

  1832. who graciously

  1833. gives us

  1834. chances again

  1835. and again

  1836. and again,

  1837. and yet a

  1838. God who

  1839. will not

  1840. put up

  1841. with sin

  1842. and wickedness

  1843. forever.

  1844. And so,

  1845. we should

  1846. tremble before

  1847. that.

  1848. We should.

  1849. Let's pray.

  1850. Father in

  1851. heaven,

  1852. thank you

  1853. for these

  1854. words.

  1855. I'll admit

  1856. on behalf

  1857. of everyone,

  1858. not the

  1859. words I

  1860. wanted to

  1861. hear at

  1862. first,

  1863. or the

  1864. words I

  1865. wanted to

  1866. see as

  1867. I began

  1868. my prep,

  1869. but it's

  1870. the truth,

  1871. it's your

  1872. word.

  1873. I pray

  1874. that you

  1875. would help

  1876. us to

  1877. wrestle with

  1878. these words

  1879. well and

  1880. to take

  1881. you very

  1882. seriously.

  1883. Thank you

  1884. that you

  1885. are an

  1886. amazing,

  1887. gracious,

  1888. merciful God.

  1889. We do

  1890. not understand

  1891. all of your

  1892. ways,

  1893. all of your

  1894. dealings with

  1895. people,

  1896. with your

  1897. special people,

  1898. Israel,

  1899. with us,

  1900. the church,

  1901. 2,000 years

  1902. later,

  1903. but we are

  1904. so thankful

  1905. that you

  1906. have given

  1907. so many of

  1908. us in this

  1909. room grace

  1910. and that we

  1911. have come to

  1912. put our faith

  1913. in you and

  1914. to be saved.

  1915. And I pray,

  1916. Lord,

  1917. that we would

  1918. continue to

  1919. work to see

  1920. others come

  1921. to that as

  1922. well.

  1923. and we

  1924. trust you

  1925. with the

  1926. results.

  1927. You are

  1928. the God

  1929. who is

  1930. capable of

  1931. softening

  1932. hearts.

  1933. Soften the

  1934. hearts of

  1935. all in our

  1936. midst who

  1937. don't believe

  1938. and all in

  1939. this community

  1940. who don't

  1941. believe.

  1942. We pray

  1943. in Jesus'

  1944. name.

  1945. Amen.
