  1. Well, this morning as we come to the Word of God, we're going to do something a little different than usual.

  2. We're going to take a Sunday off from the Gospel of John, and we're going to hear from another place in God's Word.

  3. The Apostle Paul, in his letter to Timothy, said this to Timothy.

  4. He said,

  5. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture.

  6. So not just a little bit of reading Scripture out loud from time to time in public, but devote yourself to it.

  7. Give yourself wholly to it.

  8. And so I want you to imagine this morning that we are living back in time in the first century.

  9. It's not too long ago that Jesus was there in Israel.

  10. Not too long ago that he was crucified, rose from the dead, and ascended into heaven.

  11. And here we are a good ways away in the city of Colossae.

  12. We live in Asia Minor, which is now modern-day Turkey.

  13. Since Jesus came, news has been spreading like wildfire about him.

  14. And bringing the news are these men called apostles of Jesus.

  15. Literally, in the common tongue, sent messengers of Jesus.

  16. And they're doing the same kinds of signs and wonders that we heard Jesus did while he was there among the Jewish people.

  17. Things which no mere man can do.

  18. Things which even the best of our world's magicians and healers can't do.

  19. Many of you know the story of how the early churches were established.

  20. The apostle Paul's missionary adventures are written out for us in the book of Acts.

  21. He went from place to place, traveling all around the Mediterranean world, spreading the news of Jesus, and speaking on behalf of the Lord.

  22. And in many cities and towns all around the Mediterranean, fellowships, churches, began to form.

  23. They began to grow as they heard the word about Christ and believed in him.

  24. And the apostles, from time to time, came back to visit these churches.

  25. And from time to time, they wrote letters to the churches.

  26. And as the churches would gather week after week, they would read aloud together these letters of the apostles.

  27. Just like Paul wrote at the end of his first letter to the Thessalonians.

  28. He charged them before the Lord to read this letter aloud to all the believers there.

  29. So what we're about to do is a lot like how they did it back then in the days of the early church.

  30. And so I want you to imagine this morning that you belong to the church of Colossae.

  31. You never had the privilege of seeing or meeting any of these apostles like Paul in person.

  32. But you heard about Jesus secondhand through a good friend named Epaphras.

  33. He himself saw Paul and met with him in person.

  34. And ever since Epaphras came back to Colossae with news of that encounter,

  35. all of us here who believe in Jesus, we've been steadily growing in our faith.

  36. And now imagine that someone has just arrived, a messenger carrying with him a letter from the apostle Paul himself,

  37. addressed to us, to our little church here in Colossae.

  38. From the miracle-working, good news-telling, apostle Paul himself.

  39. And now imagine that we are all gathered for the first time to hear what Paul would say to us on behalf of the Lord Jesus.

  40. Let me read you Paul's letter to the Colossians in full.

  41. Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy, our brother.

  42. To God's holy people in Colossae, the faithful brothers and sisters in Christ,

  43. grace and peace to you from God our Father.

  44. Father, we always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you.

  45. Because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus,

  46. and of the love you have for all God's people.

  47. The faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven,

  48. and about which you have already heard in the true message of the gospel that has come to you.

  49. In the same way, the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world,

  50. just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and truly understood God's grace.

  51. You learned it from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant,

  52. who is a faithful minister of Christ on our behalf,

  53. and who also told us of your love in the Spirit.

  54. For this reason, since the day we heard about you,

  55. we have not stopped praying for you.

  56. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will,

  57. through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives,

  58. so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord,

  59. and please him in every way,

  60. bearing fruit in every good work,

  61. growing in the knowledge of God,

  62. being strengthened with all power,

  63. according to his glorious might,

  64. so that you may have great endurance and patience,

  65. and giving joyful thanks to the Father,

  66. who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people

  67. in the kingdom of light.

  68. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness

  69. and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves,

  70. in whom we have redemption,

  71. the forgiveness of sins,

  72. the Son is the image of the invisible God,

  73. the firstborn over all creation,

  74. for in him all things were created,

  75. things in heaven and on earth,

  76. visible and invisible,

  77. whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities,

  78. all things have been created through him and for him.

  79. He is before all things,

  80. and in him all things hold together.

  81. And he is the head of the body,

  82. the church.

  83. He is the beginning

  84. and the firstborn from among the dead,

  85. so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

  86. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him

  87. and through him to reconcile to himself all things,

  88. whether things on earth or things in heaven,

  89. by making peace through his blood shed on the cross.

  90. Once you were alienated from God

  91. and were enemies in your minds

  92. because of your evil behavior,

  93. but now he has reconciled you

  94. by Christ's physical body through death

  95. to present you holy in his sight,

  96. without blemish and free from accusation,

  97. if you continue in your faith,

  98. established and firm,

  99. and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel.

  100. This is the gospel that you heard

  101. and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven

  102. and of which I, Paul, became a servant.

  103. Now, I rejoice in what I am suffering for you

  104. and I fill up in my flesh

  105. what is still lacking in regard to Christ's afflictions

  106. for the sake of his body,

  107. which is the church.

  108. I have become its servant by the commission

  109. God gave me to present to you

  110. the word of God in its fullness,

  111. the mystery that has been kept hidden

  112. for ages and generations,

  113. but is now disclosed to the Lord's people.

  114. To them, God has chosen to make known

  115. among the Gentiles

  116. the glorious riches of this mystery,

  117. which is Christ in you,

  118. the hope of glory.

  119. He is the one we proclaim,

  120. admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom

  121. so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ.

  122. To this end,

  123. I strenuously contend with all the energy

  124. Christ so powerfully works in me.

  125. I want you to know how hard I'm contending for you

  126. and for those at Laodicea

  127. and for all who have not met me personally.

  128. My goal is that they may be encouraged in heart

  129. and united in love

  130. so that they may have the full riches

  131. of complete understanding

  132. in order that they may know the mystery of God,

  133. namely, Christ,

  134. in whom are hidden

  135. all the treasures

  136. of wisdom

  137. and knowledge.

  138. I tell you this

  139. so that no one may deceive you

  140. by fine-sounding arguments.

  141. For though I am absent from you in body,

  142. I am present with you in spirit

  143. and delight to see how disciplined

  144. you are

  145. and how firm

  146. your faith in Christ is.

  147. So then,

  148. just as you received Christ Jesus

  149. as Lord,

  150. continue to live your lives in Him,

  151. rooted

  152. and built up in Him,

  153. strengthened in the faith

  154. as you were taught

  155. and overflowing with thankfulness.

  156. See to it that no one takes you captive

  157. through hollow

  158. and deceptive philosophy

  159. which depends on human tradition

  160. and the elemental spiritual forces

  161. of this world

  162. rather than on Christ.

  163. For in Christ,

  164. all the fullness of deity

  165. dwells

  166. in bodily form.

  167. And in Christ,

  168. you have been brought to fullness.

  169. He is the head

  170. over every power

  171. and authority.

  172. in Him,

  173. you were also circumcised

  174. with a circumcision

  175. not performed by human hands.

  176. Your whole self,

  177. ruled by the flesh,

  178. was put off

  179. when you were circumcised

  180. by Christ.

  181. Having been buried

  182. with Him

  183. in baptism,

  184. in which you were also

  185. raised with Him

  186. through your faith

  187. in the working of God

  188. who raised Him

  189. from the dead,

  190. when you were dead

  191. in your sins

  192. and in the uncircumcision

  193. of your flesh,

  194. God made you

  195. alive

  196. with Christ.

  197. He forgave us

  198. all our sins

  199. having canceled

  200. the charge

  201. of our legal indebtedness

  202. which stood against us

  203. and condemned us.

  204. He has taken it away,

  205. nailing it to the cross.

  206. And having disarmed

  207. the powers and authorities,

  208. He made a public spectacle

  209. of them,

  210. triumphing over them

  211. by the cross.

  212. Therefore,

  213. do not let anyone judge you

  214. by what you eat

  215. or drink

  216. or with regard

  217. to a religious festival,

  218. a new moon celebration

  219. or a Sabbath day.

  220. These are a shadow

  221. of the things

  222. that were to come.

  223. The reality,

  224. however,

  225. is found

  226. in Christ.

  227. Do not let anyone

  228. who delights

  229. in false humility

  230. and the worship

  231. of angels

  232. disqualify you.

  233. Such a person

  234. also goes into

  235. great detail

  236. about what they have seen.

  237. They are puffed up

  238. with idle notions

  239. by their unspiritual mind.

  240. They have lost connection

  241. with the head

  242. from whom the whole body,

  243. supported

  244. and held together

  245. by its ligaments

  246. and sinews,

  247. grows

  248. as God causes it

  249. to grow.

  250. Since you died

  251. with Christ

  252. to the elemental

  253. spiritual forces

  254. of this world,

  255. why,

  256. as though you still

  257. belong to the world,

  258. do you submit

  259. to its rules?

  260. Do not handle,

  261. do not taste,

  262. do not touch.

  263. These rules,

  264. which have to do

  265. with things

  266. that are all

  267. destined to perish

  268. with use,

  269. are based on

  270. merely human commands

  271. and teachings.

  272. Such regulations,

  273. indeed,

  274. have an appearance

  275. of wisdom

  276. with their self-imposed

  277. worship,

  278. their false humility,

  279. and their harsh

  280. treatment of the body.

  281. But they lack

  282. any value

  283. in restraining

  284. sensual indulgence.

  285. since then,

  286. you have been

  287. raised with Christ.

  288. Set your hearts

  289. on things above,

  290. where Christ is,

  291. seated at the right

  292. hand of God.

  293. Set your minds

  294. on things above,

  295. not on earthly things.

  296. For you died,

  297. and your life

  298. is now hidden

  299. with Christ

  300. in God.

  301. when Christ,

  302. who is

  303. your life,

  304. appears,

  305. you also

  306. will appear

  307. with him

  308. in glory.

  309. Put to death,

  310. therefore,

  311. whatever belongs

  312. to your earthly nature,

  313. sexual immorality,

  314. impurity,

  315. lust,

  316. evil desires,

  317. and greed,

  318. which is

  319. idolatry.

  320. Because of these,

  321. the wrath of God

  322. is coming.

  323. You used to walk

  324. in these ways,

  325. in the life

  326. you once lived,

  327. but now you must

  328. also rid yourselves

  329. of all such things

  330. as these,

  331. anger,

  332. rage,

  333. malice,

  334. slander,

  335. and filthy language

  336. from your lips.

  337. do not lie

  338. to each other,

  339. since you have

  340. taken off

  341. your old self

  342. with its practices

  343. and have put on

  344. the new self,

  345. which is being

  346. renewed

  347. in knowledge,

  348. in the image

  349. of its creator.

  350. Here there is

  351. no Gentile

  352. or Jew,

  353. circumcised

  354. or uncircumcised,

  355. barbarian,

  356. Scythian,

  357. slave,

  358. or free,

  359. but Christ

  360. is all

  361. and is in all.

  362. Therefore,

  363. as God's

  364. chosen people,

  365. holy

  366. and dearly

  367. loved,

  368. clothe yourselves

  369. with compassion,

  370. kindness,

  371. humility,

  372. gentleness,

  373. and patience.

  374. Bear with each other

  375. and forgive

  376. one another.

  377. if any of you

  378. has a grievance

  379. against someone,

  380. forgive as the Lord

  381. forgave you.

  382. And over

  383. all these virtues,

  384. put on love,

  385. which binds them

  386. all together

  387. in perfect unity.

  388. Let the peace

  389. of Christ

  390. rule

  391. in your hearts,

  392. since as members

  393. of one body,

  394. you were called

  395. to peace.

  396. and be thankful.

  397. Let the message

  398. of Christ

  399. dwell among you

  400. richly

  401. as you teach

  402. and admonish

  403. one another

  404. with all wisdom

  405. through psalms,

  406. hymns,

  407. and songs

  408. from the Spirit,

  409. singing to God

  410. with gratitude

  411. in your hearts.

  412. and whatever you do,

  413. whether in word

  414. or deed,

  415. do it all

  416. in the name

  417. of the Lord Jesus,

  418. giving thanks

  419. to God

  420. the Father

  421. through him.

  422. Wives,

  423. submit

  424. yourselves

  425. to your husbands

  426. as is fitting

  427. in the Lord.

  428. husbands,

  429. love your wives

  430. and do not

  431. be harsh

  432. with them.

  433. Children,

  434. obey

  435. your parents

  436. in everything

  437. for this

  438. pleases

  439. the Lord.

  440. Fathers,

  441. do not

  442. embitter

  443. your children

  444. or they

  445. will become

  446. discouraged.

  447. Slaves,

  448. obey

  449. your earthly

  450. masters

  451. in everything

  452. and do it

  453. not only

  454. when their

  455. eye is on you

  456. and to curry

  457. their favor

  458. but with

  459. sincerity

  460. of heart

  461. and reverence

  462. for the Lord.

  463. Whatever you do,

  464. work at it

  465. with all your

  466. heart

  467. as working

  468. for the Lord,

  469. not for human

  470. masters

  471. since you know

  472. that you will

  473. receive

  474. an inheritance

  475. from the Lord

  476. as your reward.

  477. It is the

  478. Lord Christ

  479. you are

  480. serving.

  481. Anyone who

  482. does wrong

  483. will be repaid

  484. for their

  485. wrongs

  486. and there

  487. is no

  488. favoritism.

  489. Masters,

  490. provide your

  491. slaves with

  492. what is right

  493. and fair

  494. because you

  495. know that

  496. you also

  497. have a

  498. master

  499. in heaven.

  500. Devote

  501. yourselves

  502. to prayer,

  503. being watchful

  504. and thankful

  505. and pray

  506. for us

  507. too

  508. that God

  509. may open

  510. a door

  511. for our

  512. message

  513. so that

  514. we may

  515. proclaim

  516. the mystery

  517. of Christ

  518. for which

  519. I am

  520. in chains.

  521. Pray that

  522. I may

  523. proclaim it

  524. clearly

  525. as I

  526. should.

  527. Be wise

  528. in the way

  529. you act

  530. toward

  531. outsiders.

  532. Make the

  533. most of

  534. every

  535. opportunity.

  536. let your

  537. conversation

  538. be always

  539. full of

  540. grace,

  541. seasoned

  542. with salt

  543. so that

  544. you may

  545. know how

  546. to answer

  547. everyone.

  548. Tychicus

  549. will tell

  550. you all

  551. the news

  552. about me.

  553. He is a

  554. dear brother,

  555. a faithful

  556. minister and

  557. fellow servant

  558. in the Lord.

  559. I'm sending

  560. him to you

  561. for the

  562. express purpose

  563. that you

  564. may know

  565. about our

  566. circumstances

  567. and that he

  568. may encourage

  569. your hearts.

  570. He's coming

  571. with Onesimus,

  572. our faithful

  573. and dear

  574. brother who

  575. is one

  576. of you.

  577. They will

  578. tell you

  579. everything that

  580. is happening

  581. here.

  582. My fellow

  583. prisoner,

  584. Aristarchus,

  585. sends you

  586. his greetings,

  587. as does

  588. Mark,

  589. the cousin

  590. of Barnabas.

  591. You have

  592. received

  593. instructions

  594. about him.

  595. If he

  596. comes to

  597. you,

  598. welcome him.

  599. Jesus,

  600. who is

  601. called

  602. Justice,

  603. also sends

  604. greetings.

  605. These are

  606. the only

  607. Jews among

  608. my co-workers

  609. for the

  610. kingdom of

  611. God,

  612. and they

  613. have proved

  614. a comfort

  615. to me.

  616. Epaphras,

  617. who is

  618. one of

  619. you,

  620. and a

  621. servant of

  622. Christ Jesus,

  623. sends greetings.

  624. He is

  625. always wrestling

  626. in prayer for

  627. you,

  628. that you may

  629. stand firm

  630. in all the

  631. will of

  632. God,

  633. mature,

  634. and fully

  635. assured.

  636. I vouch for

  637. him that he

  638. is working

  639. hard for you

  640. and for those

  641. at Laodicea

  642. and Hierapolis.

  643. Our dear

  644. friend Luke,

  645. the doctor,

  646. and Demas,

  647. send greetings.

  648. Give my

  649. greetings to

  650. the brothers

  651. and sisters

  652. at Laodicea
