  1. This morning service is going to look and feel a little different than the typical service.

  2. I was thinking about what to do just to kind of help us prepare for Resurrection Sunday,

  3. which is already next Sunday.

  4. And today's officially Palm Sunday.

  5. And we actually just talked about and spent some time focusing on the triumphal entry

  6. and what happened on Palm Sunday a couple weeks back as we've been working through the Gospel of John.

  7. And so what kind of came to my heart and to my mind was we don't typically do a Good Friday service here at our church.

  8. But in order to really celebrate Jesus rising from the dead,

  9. I think we first need to take some time to reflect on how he came to die and why.

  10. And so that'll be the focus of our service this morning.

  11. There'll be a fair bit more singing and we'll have a fair bit of scripture reading

  12. and it'll kind of all be mixed throughout.

  13. So I'll invite you to stand whenever we sing.

  14. Just feel free to stand on up and join in the singing.

  15. Or if you'd rather just feel like you want to be quiet and just sit and sing quietly or just listen,

  16. you're welcome to do that as well.

  17. This morning's scripture readings will be mostly, I think all of them will be from the Gospel of Luke,

  18. just so that you know where I'm reading from.

  19. We begin at Palm Sunday.

  20. Reading from Luke chapter 19.

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  21. Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them.

  22. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them,

  23. Why are you untying that colt?

  24. They replied,

  25. The Lord needs it.

  26. They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it.

  27. As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road.

  28. When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives,

  29. the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen.

  30. Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord.

  31. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest.

  32. Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus,

  33. Teacher, rebuke your disciples.

  34. I tell you, he replied,

  35. If they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.

  36. I'm forgiven because you were forsaken.

  37. I'm accepted.

  38. You were condemned.

  39. And I'm alive and well.

  40. Your spirit is within me.

  41. Because you died and rose again.

  42. Amazing love, how can it be

  43. That you, my King, would die for me?

  44. Amazing love, I know it's true.

  45. And it's my joy to honor you.

  46. In all I do, I honor you.

  47. I'm forgiven.

  48. I'm forgiven.

  49. I'm forgiven.

  50. I'm forgiven.

  51. Because you were forsaken.

  52. I'm forgiven.

  53. I'm forgiven.

  54. I'm forgiven.

  55. You were condemned.

  56. I'm forgiven.

  57. You could Social program.

  58. You were forgiven.

  59. You were Hurts, I have cleaned, and you were in the morning.

  60. Amazing love, how can it be

  61. That you, my King, would die for me

  62. Amazing love, I know it's true

  63. And it's my joy to honor you in all I do

  64. I honor you

  65. You are my King

  66. You are my King

  67. Jesus, you are my King

  68. Jesus, you are my King

  69. Amazing love, how can it be

  70. That you, my King, would die for me

  71. Amazing love, I know it's true

  72. And it's my joy to honor you in all I do

  73. I honor you

  74. In all I do

  75. Let me honor you

  76. Go ahead and be seated

  77. One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts

  78. And proclaiming the good news

  79. The chief priests and the teachers of the law

  80. Together with the elders

  81. Came up to him

  82. Tell us by what authority you are doing these things

  83. They said, who gave you this authority?

  84. He replied

  85. I will also ask you a question

  86. Tell me

  87. John's baptism

  88. Was it from heaven?

  89. Or of human origin?

  90. They discussed it among themselves and said

  91. If we say from heaven

  92. He will ask

  93. Why didn't you believe him?

  94. But if we say of human origin

  95. All the people will stone us

  96. Because they are persuaded

  97. That John was a prophet

  98. So they answered

  99. We don't know where it was from

  100. Jesus said

  101. Neither will I tell you

  102. By what authority I'm doing these things

  103. He went on to tell the people this parable

  104. A man planted a vineyard

  105. Rented it to some farmers

  106. And went away for a long time

  107. At harvest time

  108. He sent a servant to the tenants

  109. So they would give him

  110. Some of the fruit of the vineyard

  111. But the tenants beat him

  112. And sent him away empty-handed

  113. He sent another servant

  114. But that one also they beat

  115. And treated shamefully

  116. And sent away empty-handed

  117. He sent still a third

  118. And they wounded him

  119. And threw him out

  120. Then the owner of the vineyard said

  121. What shall I do?

  122. I will send my son

  123. Whom I love

  124. Perhaps they will respect him

  125. But when the tenants saw him

  126. They talked the matter over

  127. This is the heir, they said

  128. Let's kill him

  129. And the inheritance will be ours

  130. So they threw him

  131. Out of the vineyard

  132. And killed him

  133. What then will the owner

  134. Of the vineyard do to them?

  135. He will come

  136. And kill those tenants

  137. And give the vineyard to others

  138. When the people heard this

  139. They said

  140. May it never be

  141. Jesus looked directly at them

  142. And asked

  143. Then what is the meaning

  144. Of that which is written?

  145. The stone the builders rejected

  146. Has become the cornerstone

  147. The teachers of the law

  148. And the chief priests

  149. Looked for a way

  150. To arrest him immediately

  151. Because they knew

  152. He had spoken this parable

  153. Against them

  154. But they were afraid

  155. Of the people

  156. Each day

  157. Jesus was teaching

  158. At the temple

  159. And each evening

  160. He went out

  161. To spend the night

  162. On the hill

  163. Called the Mount of Olives

  164. And all the people

  165. Came early in the morning

  166. To hear him

  167. At the temple

  168. Come early in the roof

  169. Well

  170. Let him meal

  171. My hope is built on nothing less

  172. Than Jesus' blood and righteousness

  173. I dare not trust the sweetest frame

  174. But wholly trust in Jesus' name

  175. Christ alone, cornerstone

  176. Weak made strong

  177. In the Savior's love through the storm

  178. He is Lord, Lord of all

  179. When darkness seems to hide His face

  180. I rest on His unchanging grace

  181. Through every high and stormy gale

  182. My anchor holds within the veil

  183. My anchor holds within the veil

  184. Christ alone, cornerstone

  185. Weak made strong

  186. In the Savior's love through the storm

  187. He is Lord, Lord of all

  188. When He shall come with trumpet sound

  189. Oh, may I then in Him be found

  190. Dressed in His righteousness alone

  191. Faultless to stand before the throne

  192. Now the festival of unleavened bread

  193. Called the Passover was approaching

  194. And the chief priests and the teachers of the law

  195. Were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus

  196. For they were afraid of the people

  197. Then Satan entered Judas

  198. Called Iscariot, one of the twelve

  199. And Judas went to the chief priests

  200. And the officers of the temple guard

  201. And discussed with them how he might betray Jesus

  202. They were delighted

  203. And agreed to give him money

  204. He consented and watched

  205. For an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them

  206. When no crowd was present

  207. Then came the day of unleavened bread

  208. On which the Passover lamb

  209. Had to be sacrificed

  210. Jesus sent Peter and John

  211. Saying

  212. Go and make preparations for us

  213. To eat the Passover

  214. Where do you want us to prepare for it?

  215. They asked

  216. He replied

  217. As you enter the city

  218. A man carrying a jar of water

  219. Will meet you

  220. Follow him to the house that he enters

  221. And say to the owner of the house

  222. The teacher asks

  223. Where is the guest room

  224. Where I may eat the Passover

  225. With my disciples?

  226. He will show you a large room

  227. Upstairs

  228. All furnished

  229. Make preparations there

  230. They left

  231. And found things

  232. Just as Jesus had told them

  233. So they prepared the Passover

  234. When the hour came

  235. Jesus and his apostles

  236. Reclined at the table

  237. And he said to them

  238. I have eagerly desired

  239. To eat this Passover with you

  240. Before I suffer

  241. For I tell you

  242. I will not eat it again

  243. Until it finds fulfillment

  244. In the kingdom of God

  245. After taking the cup

  246. He gave thanks

  247. And said

  248. Take this and divide it among you

  249. For I tell you

  250. I will not drink again

  251. From the fruit of the vine

  252. Until the kingdom of God comes

  253. And he took bread

  254. Gave thanks

  255. And broke it

  256. And gave it to them

  257. Saying

  258. This is my body

  259. Given for you

  260. Do this in remembrance of me

  261. In the same way

  262. After the supper

  263. He took the cup

  264. Saying

  265. This cup

  266. Is the new covenant

  267. In my blood

  268. Which is poured out

  269. For you

  270. But the hand of him

  271. Who is going to betray me

  272. Is with mine

  273. On the table

  274. The son of man

  275. Will go

  276. As it has been decreed

  277. But woe

  278. To that man

  279. Who betrays him

  280. They began to question

  281. Among themselves

  282. Which of them

  283. It might be

  284. Who would do this

  285. Your only son

  286. No sin to hide

  287. But you have sent him

  288. From your side

  289. To walk upon

  290. This guilty song

  291. And to become

  292. The Lamb of God

  293. O Lamb of God

  294. Sweet Lamb of God

  295. I love the Holy Lamb of God

  296. O wash me in his precious blood

  297. My Jesus Christ

  298. The Lamb of God

  299. Your gift of love

  300. They crucified

  301. They laughed and scorned him

  302. As he died

  303. The humble king

  304. They named a fraud

  305. And sacrificed the Lamb of God

  306. O Lamb of God

  307. Sweet Lamb of God

  308. I love the Holy Lamb of God

  309. O wash me in his precious blood

  310. Jesus Christ

  311. The Lamb of God

  312. I was so lost

  313. I should have died

  314. But you have brought me

  315. To your side

  316. To be led by

  317. Your staff and rock

  318. And to be called

  319. The Lamb of God

  320. O Lamb of God

  321. Sweet Lamb of God

  322. I love the Holy Lamb of God

  323. I love the Holy Lamb of God

  324. O wash me in his precious blood

  325. My Jesus Christ

  326. The Lamb of God

  327. Jesus went out as usual

  328. To the Mount of Olives

  329. And his disciples followed him

  330. On reaching the place

  331. He said to them

  332. Pray that you will not

  333. Fall into temptation

  334. He withdrew about a stone's throw

  335. Beyond them

  336. Nelt down and prayed

  337. Father

  338. If you are willing

  339. Take this cup from me

  340. Yet not my will

  341. But yours be done

  342. An angel from heaven

  343. Appeared to him

  344. And strengthened him

  345. And being in anguish

  346. He prayed more earnestly

  347. And his sweat was like

  348. Drops of blood

  349. Falling to the ground

  350. When he rose

  351. From prayer

  352. And went back

  353. To the disciples

  354. He found them

  355. Asleep

  356. Exhausted

  357. From sorrow

  358. Why are you sleeping?

  359. He asked them

  360. Get up

  361. And pray

  362. So that you will not

  363. Fall into temptation

  364. While he was still speaking

  365. A crowd

  366. Came up

  367. And the man

  368. Who was called

  369. Judas

  370. One of the twelve

  371. Was leading them

  372. He approached

  373. Jesus

  374. To kiss him

  375. But Jesus

  376. Asked him

  377. Judas

  378. Are you betraying

  379. The son of man

  380. With a kiss?

  381. When Jesus' followers

  382. Saw what was going to happen

  383. They said

  384. Lord

  385. Should we strike

  386. With our swords?

  387. And one of them

  388. Struck the servant

  389. Of the high priest

  390. Cutting off

  391. His right ear

  392. But Jesus answered

  393. No more of this

  394. And he touched

  395. The man's ear

  396. And healed him

  397. Then Jesus said

  398. To the chief priests

  399. The officers

  400. Of the temple guard

  401. And the elders

  402. Who had come for him

  403. Am I leading a rebellion

  404. That you have come

  405. With swords

  406. And clubs?

  407. Every day

  408. I was with you

  409. In the temple courts

  410. And you did not

  411. Lay a hand on me

  412. But this is your hour

  413. When darkness reigns

  414. Then seizing him

  415. They led him away

  416. And took him

  417. Into the house

  418. Of the high priest

  419. Peter followed

  420. At a distance

  421. And when some there

  422. Had kindled a fire

  423. In the middle of the courtyard

  424. And had sat down together

  425. Peter sat down with them

  426. A servant girl

  427. Saw him

  428. Seated there

  429. In the firelight

  430. She looked closely

  431. At him

  432. And said

  433. This man was with him

  434. But he denied it

  435. Woman

  436. I don't know him

  437. He said

  438. A little later

  439. Someone else

  440. Saw him

  441. And said

  442. You also are one of them

  443. Man I am not

  444. Peter replied

  445. About an hour later

  446. Another asserted

  447. Certainly this fellow

  448. Was with him

  449. For he's a Galilean

  450. Peter replied

  451. Man

  452. I don't know

  453. What you're talking about

  454. Just as he was speaking

  455. The rooster crowed

  456. The Lord turned

  457. And looked straight

  458. At Peter

  459. Then Peter remembered

  460. The word the Lord

  461. Had spoken to him

  462. Before the rooster

  463. Crows today

  464. You will disown me

  465. Three times

  466. And he went outside

  467. And wept

  468. Bitterly

  469. You can remain seated

  470. For this one

  471. Man of sorrows

  472. Lamb of God

  473. By his own

  474. Betray

  475. The sin of man

  476. And wrath of God

  477. Has been on Jesus' lay

  478. Oh that rugged cross

  479. My salvation

  480. Where your love poured out

  481. Over me

  482. Now my soul cries out

  483. Hallelujah

  484. Praise and honor

  485. Father unto thee

  486. The men who were guarding Jesus

  487. Began mocking and beating him

  488. They blindfolded him

  489. And demanded

  490. Prophesy

  491. Who hit you?

  492. And they said

  493. Many other insulting things

  494. To him

  495. At daybreak

  496. The council of the elders

  497. Of the people

  498. Both the chief priests

  499. And the teachers of the law

  500. Met together

  501. And Jesus was led before them

  502. If you are the Messiah

  503. They said

  504. Tell us

  505. Jesus answered

  506. If I tell you

  507. You will not believe me

  508. And if I asked you

  509. You would not answer

  510. But from now on

  511. The son of man

  512. Will be seated

  513. At the right hand

  514. Of the mighty God

  515. They all asked him

  516. Are you then

  517. The son of God?

  518. He replied

  519. You say that I am

  520. Then they said

  521. Why do we need

  522. Any more testimony?

  523. We have heard it

  524. From his own lips

  525. Then the whole assembly

  526. Rose

  527. And led him

  528. Off to Pilate

  529. And they began

  530. To accuse him

  531. Saying

  532. We have found this man

  533. Subverting our nation

  534. He opposes payment

  535. Of taxes

  536. To Caesar

  537. And claims to be

  538. Messiah

  539. A king

  540. So Pilate asked Jesus

  541. Are you

  542. The king of the Jews?

  543. You have said so

  544. Jesus replied

  545. Then Pilate announced

  546. To the chief priests

  547. And the crowd

  548. I find no basis

  549. For a charge

  550. Against this man

  551. But they insisted

  552. He stirs up the people

  553. All over Judea

  554. By his teaching

  555. He started in Galilee

  556. And has come all the way here

  557. On hearing this

  558. Pilate asked if the man

  559. Was a Galilean

  560. When he learned

  561. That Jesus was under

  562. Herod's jurisdiction

  563. He sent him to Herod

  564. Who was also in Jerusalem

  565. At that time

  566. When Herod saw Jesus

  567. He was greatly pleased

  568. Because for a long time

  569. He had been wanting

  570. To see him

  571. From what he had heard

  572. About him

  573. He hoped to see him

  574. Perform a sign

  575. Of some sort

  576. He plied him

  577. With many questions

  578. But Jesus gave him

  579. No answer

  580. The chief priests

  581. And the teachers

  582. Of the law

  583. Were standing there

  584. Vehemently accusing him

  585. Then Herod and his soldiers

  586. Ridiculed and mocked him

  587. Dressing him

  588. In an elegant robe

  589. They sent him back

  590. To Pilate

  591. That day

  592. Herod and Pilate

  593. Became friends

  594. Before this

  595. They had been enemies

  596. Pilate called together

  597. The chief priests

  598. The rulers

  599. And the people

  600. And said to them

  601. You brought me

  602. This man

  603. As one

  604. Who was inciting

  605. The people

  606. To rebellion

  607. I have examined

  608. Him in your presence

  609. And have found

  610. No basis

  611. For your charges

  612. Against him

  613. Neither has Herod

  614. For he sent him

  615. Back to us

  616. As you can see

  617. He has done nothing

  618. To deserve death

  619. Therefore

  620. I will punish him

  621. And then release him

  622. But the whole crowd

  623. Shouted

  624. Away with this man

  625. Release Barabbas

  626. To us

  627. Barabbas

  628. Barabbas had been

  629. Thrown into prison

  630. For an insurrection

  631. In the city

  632. And for murder

  633. Wanting to release

  634. Jesus

  635. Pilate appealed

  636. To them again

  637. But they kept shouting

  638. Crucify him

  639. Crucify him

  640. For the third time

  641. He spoke to them

  642. Why

  643. What crime

  644. Has this man committed

  645. I have found in him

  646. No grounds

  647. For the death penalty

  648. Therefore

  649. I will have him

  650. Punished

  651. And then release him

  652. But with loud shouts

  653. They insistently

  654. Demanded that he

  655. Be crucified

  656. And their shouts

  657. Prevailed

  658. So Pilate decided

  659. To grant

  660. Their demand

  661. He released the man

  662. Who had been thrown

  663. Into the prison

  664. For insurrection

  665. And murder

  666. The one they asked for

  667. And surrendered Jesus

  668. To their will

  669. Silent as he stood

  670. Accused

  671. Beaten

  672. Mocked

  673. And scorned

  674. Bowing to the Father's will

  675. He took a crown of thorns

  676. Oh that rugged cross

  677. My salvation

  678. Where your love poured out over me

  679. Now my soul cries out

  680. Hallelujah

  681. Praise and honor

  682. Unto thee

  683. Sent of heaven

  684. God's own son

  685. To purchase and redeem

  686. And reconcile

  687. The very ones

  688. Who nailed him

  689. To the tree

  690. Oh that rugged cross

  691. My salvation

  692. Where your love poured out

  693. Over me

  694. Now my soul cries out

  695. Hallelujah

  696. Praise and honor

  697. Unto thee

  698. Praise and honor

  699. Unto thee

  700. As the soldiers

  701. Led Jesus away

  702. They seized Simon

  703. From Cyrene

  704. Who was on his way

  705. In from the country

  706. And put the cross

  707. On him

  708. And made him carry it

  709. Behind Jesus

  710. A large number

  711. Of people

  712. Followed him

  713. Including women

  714. Who mourned

  715. And wailed for him

  716. Jesus turned

  717. And said to them

  718. Daughters of Jerusalem

  719. Do not weep for me

  720. Weep for yourselves

  721. And for your children

  722. For the time will come

  723. When you will say

  724. Blessed are the childless women

  725. The wombs that never bore

  726. And the breasts

  727. That never nursed

  728. Then they will say

  729. To the mountains

  730. Fall on us

  731. And to the hills

  732. Cover us

  733. For if people do these things

  734. When the tree is green

  735. What will happen

  736. When it is dry

  737. Two other men

  738. Both criminals

  739. Were also led out

  740. With him to be executed

  741. When they came to the place

  742. Called the skull

  743. They crucified him there

  744. Along with the criminals

  745. One on his right

  746. The other on his left

  747. Jesus said

  748. Father

  749. Forgive them

  750. For they do not know

  751. What they are doing

  752. And they divided up his clothes

  753. By casting lots

  754. The people stood watching

  755. And the rulers

  756. Even sneered at him

  757. They said

  758. He saved others

  759. Let him save himself

  760. If he is God's Messiah

  761. The chosen one

  762. The soldiers also came up

  763. And mocked him

  764. They offered him

  765. Wine vinegar

  766. And said

  767. If you are the king of the Jews

  768. Save yourself

  769. There was a written notice

  770. Above him

  771. Which read

  772. This is the king

  773. Of the Jews

  774. One of the criminals

  775. Who hung there

  776. Hurled insults at him

  777. Aren't you the Messiah

  778. Save yourself

  779. And us

  780. But the other criminal

  781. Rebuked him

  782. Don't you fear God

  783. He said

  784. Since you are under

  785. The same sentence

  786. We are punished justly

  787. We are getting

  788. What our deeds deserve

  789. But this man

  790. Has done nothing wrong

  791. Then he said

  792. Jesus

  793. Remember me

  794. When you come

  795. Into your kingdom

  796. Jesus answered him

  797. Truly

  798. I tell you

  799. Today

  800. You will be with me

  801. In paradise

  802. I know a place

  803. A wonderful place

  804. Where accused and condemned

  805. Find mercy and grace

  806. Where the wrongs we have done

  807. And the wrongs done to us

  808. Nailed there with him

  809. There on the cross

  810. At the cross

  811. At the cross

  812. He died for our sin

  813. At the cross

  814. He gave us life again

  815. I know a place

  816. A wonderful place

  817. Where accused and condemned

  818. Find mercy and grace

  819. Where the wrongs we have done

  820. Where the wrongs we have done

  821. And the wrongs done to us

  822. Nailed there with him

  823. There on the cross

  824. At the cross

  825. At the cross

  826. He died for our sin

  827. At the cross

  828. At the cross

  829. At the cross

  830. At the cross

  831. At the cross

  832. At the cross

  833. You died for our sin

  834. At the cross

  835. At the cross

  836. At the cross

  837. At the cross

  838. At the cross

  839. You died for our sin

  840. At the cross

  841. At the cross

  842. You gave us life again

  843. I know a place

  844. A wonderful place

  845. You may be seated

  846. It was now about noon

  847. And darkness came over the whole land

  848. Until three in the afternoon

  849. For the sun stopped shining

  850. And the curtain of the temple

  851. Was torn in two

  852. Jesus called out with a loud voice

  853. Father

  854. Into your hands

  855. I commit my spirit

  856. When he had said this

  857. He breathed his last

  858. The centurion

  859. Seeing what had happened

  860. Praised God

  861. And said

  862. Surely this was

  863. A righteous man

  864. When all the people

  865. Who had gathered

  866. To witness this sight

  867. Saw what took place

  868. They beat their breasts

  869. And went away

  870. But all those who knew him

  871. Including the women

  872. Who had followed him

  873. From Galilee

  874. Stood at a distance

  875. Watching these things

  876. Now there was a man

  877. Named Joseph

  878. A member of the council

  879. A good and upright man

  880. Who had not consented

  881. To their decision

  882. And action

  883. He came from the Judean town

  884. Of Arimathea

  885. And he himself

  886. Was waiting

  887. For the kingdom of God

  888. Going to Pilate

  889. He asked for Jesus' body

  890. Then he took it down

  891. Wrapped it in linen cloth

  892. And placed it in a tomb

  893. Cut in the rock

  894. One which no one

  895. Had yet been laid

  896. It was preparation day

  897. And the Sabbath

  898. Was about to begin

  899. The women who had come

  900. With Jesus from Galilee

  901. Followed Joseph

  902. And saw the tomb

  903. And how his body

  904. Was laid in it

  905. Then they went home

  906. And prepared spices

  907. And perfumes

  908. But they rested

  909. On the Sabbath

  910. In obedience to the commandment

  911. This is the story of Jesus

  912. How he died

  913. How his body came to be

  914. Laid in that cold

  915. Dark tomb

  916. This is how he died

  917. But just as important

  918. Is why he died

  919. And we've been singing about it

  920. Amazing love

  921. That rugged cross

  922. My salvation

  923. Where the wrongs

  924. We have done

  925. Were nailed there with him

  926. There at the cross

  927. And at the cross

  928. He died for our sin

  929. And at the cross

  930. He gave us life again

  931. We've been singing about it

  932. But just in case

  933. You missed it

  934. Or you're focusing

  935. On other things

  936. In the songs

  937. I want to say it to you again

  938. As plainly as I can

  939. Jesus died for you

  940. Because he loves you

  941. So that your sins

  942. Could be forgiven

  943. Atoned for

  944. And so that you could have

  945. Everlasting life

  946. With God

  947. A restored

  948. Personal

  949. Intimate relationship

  950. With God

  951. Forever

  952. Forever

  953. There are sadly

  954. A lot of churches

  955. Today

  956. Who will hardly

  957. Even mention

  958. The word sin

  959. And I understand

  960. Why

  961. Who wants to be

  962. Reminded about

  963. Our own

  964. Guiltiness

  965. Who wants to be

  966. Reminded about

  967. All the times

  968. In the Bible

  969. All the places

  970. In the Bible

  971. That God says

  972. That we deserve

  973. To be punished

  974. For our sins

  975. Many people

  976. Want to avoid

  977. That topic

  978. If we're honest

  979. Even though

  980. We talk about it

  981. A fair bit

  982. Here in our church

  983. None of us

  984. Wants to talk

  985. About the specifics

  986. Of how we still

  987. Do sin

  988. And blow it

  989. Day after day

  990. And week after week

  991. It's much more

  992. Comfortable

  993. Much easier

  994. To just hide

  995. Those things

  996. Cover that stuff up

  997. That we've

  998. Said

  999. Or thought

  1000. Or done

  1001. That we know

  1002. We shouldn't

  1003. Have

  1004. It's easier

  1005. To just tell

  1006. Ourselves

  1007. That we're fine

  1008. That we're good

  1009. Enough

  1010. That we're better

  1011. Than most

  1012. But God has

  1013. A different

  1014. Evaluation of us

  1015. He has a

  1016. Different verdict

  1017. For us

  1018. According to him

  1019. We are so

  1020. Truly guilty

  1021. And so

  1022. Deserving of

  1023. Punishment

  1024. That it required

  1025. The awful

  1026. Suffering

  1027. And death

  1028. Of God's

  1029. Own perfect

  1030. Son

  1031. Jesus

  1032. To remedy

  1033. That

  1034. We can try

  1035. To minimize

  1036. Our sins

  1037. We can try

  1038. And avoid

  1039. Bringing that

  1040. Topic up

  1041. With other

  1042. People

  1043. But it doesn't

  1044. Really work

  1045. We will always

  1046. Carry deep

  1047. Within us

  1048. That nagging

  1049. Feeling

  1050. Of guilt

  1051. Until

  1052. Until we

  1053. Finally admit

  1054. Our sins

  1055. And admit

  1056. Our need

  1057. For Jesus

  1058. Death

  1059. And for

  1060. God's

  1061. Forgiveness

  1062. Because deep

  1063. Down inside

  1064. We know

  1065. That the things

  1066. That we have

  1067. Done are wrong

  1068. Many of them

  1069. I asked a bunch

  1070. Of mostly unchurched

  1071. Teenagers

  1072. On Friday night

  1073. What they think

  1074. Some of the sins

  1075. Are

  1076. And they knew

  1077. They gave a

  1078. Pretty accurate

  1079. List

  1080. Because every

  1081. One of them

  1082. Has a conscience

  1083. Given to them

  1084. By God

  1085. But the good

  1086. News of Jesus

  1087. Is that we

  1088. Don't have to

  1089. Cover up our

  1090. Sins anymore

  1091. We don't have

  1092. To live with

  1093. Guilt

  1094. Any longer

  1095. God has

  1096. Provided the

  1097. Remedy

  1098. The solution

  1099. The way to

  1100. Be forgiven

  1101. The way for

  1102. Our sins

  1103. To be atoned

  1104. For

  1105. And it

  1106. Comes to us

  1107. Through Jesus

  1108. And his

  1109. Suffering and

  1110. Death

  1111. At the cross

  1112. By God's

  1113. Amazing

  1114. Love

  1115. And mercy

  1116. He provided

  1117. Someone who

  1118. Would willingly

  1119. Take upon

  1120. Himself

  1121. Our punishment

  1122. So that we

  1123. Could go free

  1124. And be restored

  1125. To God

  1126. This is the

  1127. Why

  1128. Of Jesus

  1129. Death

  1130. At the cross

  1131. Which leaves

  1132. Us one final

  1133. Piece

  1134. For each of

  1135. Us to consider

  1136. What should

  1137. I do

  1138. In response

  1139. To Jesus

  1140. Death

  1141. At the cross

  1142. The answer

  1143. To this

  1144. Question

  1145. For you

  1146. Depends on

  1147. Where you're

  1148. At in your

  1149. Relationship

  1150. With God

  1151. This morning

  1152. Perhaps you've

  1153. Never honestly

  1154. Poured out your

  1155. Heart to God

  1156. Maybe you've

  1157. Never admitted

  1158. To God

  1159. That you're

  1160. A sinful

  1161. Person

  1162. And need

  1163. His forgiveness

  1164. If that's you

  1165. Then I want

  1166. To urge you

  1167. To do that

  1168. The Bible's

  1169. Word for this

  1170. Is repent

  1171. It means

  1172. Praying to God

  1173. Admitting

  1174. That you've

  1175. Sinned against

  1176. Him

  1177. And that the

  1178. Things that

  1179. You've

  1180. And the things

  1181. That you've

  1182. Done that are

  1183. Wrong

  1184. It means

  1185. Agreeing with

  1186. Him that

  1187. Yes

  1188. I know

  1189. That I deserve

  1190. Your punishment

  1191. And then at

  1192. The end of

  1193. All that

  1194. Humbly asking

  1195. Him to

  1196. Forgive you

  1197. For your

  1198. Sins

  1199. Through Jesus

  1200. And what he

  1201. Did at the

  1202. Cross for you

  1203. This is one

  1204. Way to

  1205. Respond

  1206. To repent

  1207. But perhaps

  1208. You've done

  1209. That already

  1210. Maybe you're

  1211. Wondering what

  1212. Else do I

  1213. Need to do

  1214. What else

  1215. Does God

  1216. Require of

  1217. Me

  1218. Here's the

  1219. Good news

  1220. There's only

  1221. One other

  1222. Thing required

  1223. And it's

  1224. Not for

  1225. You to do

  1226. A big

  1227. Long list

  1228. Of good

  1229. Works

  1230. To make

  1231. Up for

  1232. The bad

  1233. Ones

  1234. Jesus said

  1235. It again

  1236. And again

  1237. The thing

  1238. That you

  1239. Need to

  1240. Do to

  1241. Receive

  1242. His

  1243. Gracious

  1244. Gift

  1245. Of

  1246. Forgiveness

  1247. Of

  1248. Everlasting

  1249. Life

  1250. Is simply

  1251. This

  1252. To believe

  1253. In him

  1254. I love

  1255. The way

  1256. The apostle

  1257. Paul said

  1258. It so

  1259. Simply to

  1260. The Philippian

  1261. Jailer

  1262. In the

  1263. Book of

  1264. Acts

  1265. He asked

  1266. Paul

  1267. What do

  1268. I need

  1269. To do

  1270. To be

  1271. Saved

  1272. Paul

  1273. Looked at

  1274. Him and

  1275. Said

  1276. Believe in

  1277. The Lord

  1278. Jesus

  1279. And you

  1280. Will be

  1281. Saved

  1282. That's it

  1283. That's the

  1284. Good news

  1285. Salvation

  1286. Is a free

  1287. Gift from

  1288. God

  1289. And anyone

  1290. Can receive

  1291. It

  1292. Who simply

  1293. Believes

  1294. In Jesus

  1295. In Jesus

  1296. Sincerely

  1297. From their

  1298. Heart

  1299. So that's

  1300. A second

  1301. Way to

  1302. Respond

  1303. To repent

  1304. And to

  1305. Believe

  1306. Maybe you're

  1307. Here this

  1308. Morning and

  1309. You've done

  1310. Both of

  1311. These

  1312. Things

  1313. But in

  1314. Your heart

  1315. You feel

  1316. Maybe a

  1317. Measure of

  1318. Brokenness

  1319. As you

  1320. Listen again

  1321. To the

  1322. Story of

  1323. Jesus and

  1324. How he

  1325. Died

  1326. Because you

  1327. Know that

  1328. Quite recently

  1329. You've not

  1330. Really been

  1331. Living the

  1332. Way that

  1333. God wants

  1334. You to

  1335. Perhaps

  1336. Living intentionally

  1337. Disobeying

  1338. The things

  1339. That he

  1340. Has asked

  1341. Us to

  1342. Do

  1343. What should

  1344. We do

  1345. In this

  1346. Case

  1347. The

  1348. Bible

  1349. Tells us

  1350. Very much

  1351. Like repent

  1352. To simply

  1353. Confess

  1354. Confess

  1355. These wrong

  1356. Things to

  1357. God again

  1358. In my

  1359. Favorite

  1360. Bible

  1361. Verses

  1362. 1 John

  1363. 1

  1364. 9

  1365. If we

  1366. Confess

  1367. Our sins

  1368. God is

  1369. Faithful

  1370. And just

  1371. And will

  1372. Forgive us

  1373. Our sins

  1374. And cleanse

  1375. Us from

  1376. All unrighteousness

  1377. He says

  1378. My dear

  1379. Friends

  1380. I write

  1381. This so

  1382. That you

  1383. Will not

  1384. Sin

  1385. But if

  1386. Anybody

  1387. Does

  1388. Sin

  1389. We have

  1390. An advocate

  1391. With the

  1392. Father

  1393. Jesus Christ

  1394. The righteous

  1395. One

  1396. He is the

  1397. Atoning

  1398. Sacrifice

  1399. For our

  1400. Sins

  1401. So even

  1402. If you've

  1403. Been a

  1404. Long time

  1405. Christian

  1406. The cross

  1407. Is still

  1408. Your remedy

  1409. What Jesus

  1410. Did there

  1411. Is the thing

  1412. That can put

  1413. Your heart

  1414. At rest

  1415. Even as you

  1416. Consider the

  1417. Sins that you

  1418. Committed this

  1419. Past week

  1420. Finally

  1421. A fourth

  1422. Response

  1423. Which we're

  1424. Going to hear

  1425. About a little

  1426. Bit in these

  1427. Next few

  1428. Songs

  1429. There is

  1430. In the

  1431. Cross of

  1432. Christ

  1433. An invitation

  1434. Not only

  1435. To repent

  1436. And believe

  1437. And to

  1438. Confess

  1439. But also

  1440. To come

  1441. And die

  1442. With him

  1443. Jesus

  1444. Said

  1445. If anyone

  1446. Would come

  1447. After me

  1448. That is

  1449. To follow

  1450. Me

  1451. To be

  1452. To be

  1453. My follower

  1454. My disciple

  1455. He must

  1456. Deny himself

  1457. Take up

  1458. His cross

  1459. And follow

  1460. Me

  1461. True belief

  1462. In Jesus

  1463. Develops

  1464. And matures

  1465. Into an

  1466. All-in

  1467. Commitment

  1468. To Jesus

  1469. Total

  1470. Devotion

  1471. To Jesus

  1472. A complete

  1473. Allegiance

  1474. To Jesus

  1475. Just as

  1476. Surely

  1477. As a

  1478. Tomato

  1479. Seed

  1480. Develops

  1481. Into a

  1482. Full-blown

  1483. Tomato

  1484. Plant

  1485. In the

  1486. Same

  1487. Way

  1488. A sincere

  1489. Faith

  1490. In the

  1491. Heart

  1492. By God's

  1493. Working

  1494. And power

  1495. Develops

  1496. Into a

  1497. Fully

  1498. Committed

  1499. Follower

  1500. Of Jesus

  1501. Such

  1502. That more

  1503. And more

  1504. You'll

  1505. Give up

  1506. Your life

  1507. In order

  1508. To follow

  1509. Him

  1510. You will

  1511. Obey

  1512. His

  1513. Commands

  1514. More

  1515. And more

  1516. And it's

  1517. Not a

  1518. Burdensome

  1519. Thing

  1520. It's a

  1521. Joyful

  1522. Thing

  1523. You will

  1524. Die

  1525. To yourself

  1526. And live

  1527. For him

  1528. Maybe

  1529. You're

  1530. Like the

  1531. Rich

  1532. Young

  1533. Ruler

  1534. You

  1535. Regard

  1536. Jesus

  1537. Quite

  1538. Highly

  1539. You've

  1540. Made

  1541. Every

  1542. Effort

  1543. To

  1544. Repent

  1545. To

  1546. Believe

  1547. To

  1548. Confess

  1549. Your

  1550. Sins

  1551. And

  1552. Keep

  1553. Short

  1554. Accounts

  1555. With

  1556. God

  1557. But

  1558. Perhaps

  1559. The

  1560. One

  1561. Thing

  1562. You

  1563. Lack

  1564. Is

  1565. Simply

  1566. To

  1567. Give

  1568. Up

  1569. Everything

  1570. And

  1571. Follow

  1572. Him

  1573. All

  1574. In

  1575. Words

  1576. Like

  1577. Surrender

  1578. Devotion

  1579. Allegiance

  1580. Lord

  1581. Capture

  1582. This

  1583. Response

  1584. To

  1585. Jesus

  1586. And so

  1587. I

  1588. Simply

  1589. Want to

  1590. Ask

  1591. You

  1592. This

  1593. Morning

  1594. As

  1595. We've

  1596. Heard

  1597. The story

  1598. Of

  1599. Jesus

  1600. Death

  1601. Again

  1602. What

  1603. Do

  1604. You

  1605. Need

  1606. To

  1607. Do

  1608. In

  1609. Response

  1610. To

  1611. Jesus

  1612. Repent

  1613. Believe

  1614. Confess

  1615. Surrender

  1616. To

  1617. Him

  1618. As

  1619. Lord

  1620. And

  1621. King

  1622. Of

  1623. Your

  1624. Life

  1625. live

  1626. Shane

  1627. As

1628. I'll invite you to stand and we'll sing a few more songs together.

1629. On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, the emblem of suffering and shame.

1630. And I love that old cross where the dearest and best for a world of lost sinners was slain.

1631. So I'll cherish the old rugged cross till my trophies at last I lay down.

1632. I will cling to the old rugged cross and exchange it someday for a crown.

1633. Oh, that old rugged cross so despised by the world has a wondrous attraction for me.

1634. For the dear Lamb of God left his glory above to bear it to dark Calvary.

1635. So I'll cherish the old rugged cross till my trophies at last I lay down.

1636. I will cling to the old rugged cross and exchange it someday for a crown.

1637. In that old rugged cross stained with blood so divine, a wondrous beauty I see.

1638. For it was on that old cross Jesus suffered and died to pardon and sanctify me.

1639. So I'll cherish the old rugged cross till my trophies at last I lay down.

1640. I will cling to the old rugged cross and exchange it someday for a crown.

1641. I will cling to the old rugged cross and exchange it someday for a crown.

1642. There's a place where mercy reigns and never dies.

1643. There's a place where streams of grace flow deep and wide.

1644. There's a place whereash where all the love I've ever found.

1645. Comes like a flood, comes flowing down.

1646. At the cross, at the cross I surrender my life.

1647. I'm in awe of You, I'm in awe of You.

1648. Where your love ran red and my sin washed white, I owe all to you.

1649. I owe all to you, Jesus.

1650. There's a place where sin and shame are powerless.

1651. Where my heart has peace with God and forgiveness.

1652. There's a place where sin and shame are powerless.

1653. There's a place where sin and shame are powerless.

1654. There's a place where sin and shame are powerless.

1655. Where all the love I've ever found comes like a flood, comes blowing down.

1656. At the cross, at the cross, I surrender my life.

1657. And I'm in awe of you.

1658. I'm in awe of you.

1659. Where your love ran red and my sin washed white, I owe all to you.

1660. I owe all to you.

1661. Here my hope is found.

  1662. Here on holy ground.

  1663. Here I bow down.

  1664. Here I bow.

  1665. Here arms open wide.

1666. Here you save my life.

  1667. Here I bow down.

  1668. Here I bow.

1669. At the cross, at the cross, I surrender my life.

1670. I'm in awe of you.

1671. I'm in awe of you.

1672. I'm in awe of you.

1673. Where your love ran red and my sin washed white, I owe all to you.

1674. I owe all to you.

1675. At the cross, at the cross, I surrender my life.

1676. And I'm in awe of you.

1677. I'm in awe of you.

1678. I'm in awe of you.

1679. Where your love ran red and my sin washed white, I owe all to you.

1680. I owe all to you, Jesus.

1681. We'll sing one more together.

1682. When I surveyed the wondrous cross, On which the Prince of Glory died.

1683. My riches gained I count but loss.

1684. And pour contempt on all my pride.

1685. See from His head, His hands, His feet.

1686. Sorrow and love flow mingled down.

1687. Did e'er such love and sorrow mean?

1688. Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

  1689. Oh, the wonderful cross.

  1690. Oh, the wonderful cross.

1691. Bids me come and die, And find that I may truly live.

  1692. Oh, the wonderful cross.

1693. All who gather here, By grace draw near, And bless your name.

1694. Were the whole realm of nature mine, That were an offering far too small.

1695. Love so amazing, So divine.

1696. And find that I may truly live.

  1697. Oh, the wonderful cross.

1698. And find that I may truly live.

  1699. Oh, the wonderful cross.

  1700. Oh, the wonderful cross.

1701. Bids me come and die, And find that I may truly live.

  1702. Oh, the wonderful cross.

  1703. Oh, the wonderful cross.

  1704. Oh, the wonderful cross.

  1705. Oh, the wonderful cross.

  1706. Oh, the wonderful cross.

  1707. Oh, the wonderful cross.

1708. All who gather here, By grace draw near, And bless your name.

1709. Let's sing that one more time.

  1710. Oh, the wonderful cross.

  1711. Oh, the wonderful cross.

  1712. Oh, the wonderful cross.

  1713. Oh, the wonderful cross.

  1714. Oh, the wonderful cross.

1715. Bids me come and die, And find that I may truly live.

  1716. Oh, the wonderful cross.

  1717. Oh, the wonderful cross.

  1718. Oh, the wonderful cross.

  1719. Oh, the wonderful cross.

1720. All who gather here, By grace draw near, And bless your name.

1721. And bless your name, Amen, Amen.

1722. in each of our hearts this week

1723. as we reflect on your death

1724. and prepare to celebrate your resurrection.

1725. To your name be the glory.

  1726. Amen.

  1727. You may be seated.
