  1. Well, have you ever experienced that phenomenon

  2. where you become so used to seeing something

  3. that you see it, but you don't really notice it anymore?

  4. Maybe it's something on the wall in your house.

  5. Maybe it's a picture from your wedding

  6. or some kind of keepsake that you put on display.

  7. You know it's there and you walk past it all the time.

  8. You see it there again and again and again,

  9. and yet somehow seeing it there,

  10. it just doesn't really register anymore.

  11. You see it there, but you don't really appreciate it

  12. like you used to.

  13. You know it's a picture of a special moment

  14. or a wonderful scene,

  15. but it's been a long time since you really stopped

  16. and looked at the expression on the people's faces

  17. in the picture

  18. or at the details that really bring out the beauty

  19. in that scene.

  20. This morning as we come to the word of God,

  21. we come to one of the greatest

  22. and most important things that Jesus ever said,

  23. but perhaps something so great and so important

  24. that it's become quite familiar,

  25. so familiar that maybe we've stopped seeing it

  26. and hearing it altogether.

  27. Jesus is in the upper room with his disciples.

  28. It's the night of his betrayal and arrest.

  29. Judas has already left the house to put his plan into action.

  30. And as we heard last week,

  31. Jesus is calling for the careful attention

  32. of his closest followers

  33. because his time with them is running out.

  34. Imagine Jesus here at the table

  35. looking around into each face,

  36. looking into your face

  37. and saying these words,

  38. a new command I give to you,

  39. love one another

  40. as I have loved you.

  41. So you must love one another.

  42. By this, everyone will know

  43. that you are my disciples

  44. if you have love

  45. for one another.

  46. Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

  47. It comes from John chapter 13.

    John 13 chapter mention

  48. Yet I wonder if these words

  49. have become to you so familiar

  50. that you see them,

  51. but you don't really notice them anymore.

  52. You hear them,

  53. but you don't really carry in your heart

  54. the full appreciation of them

  55. like you used to.

  56. I mean, isn't it easy

  57. to just hear Jesus say this

  58. and think,

  59. oh yeah, love.

  60. Yep.

  61. We need to love each other.

  62. Next,

  63. what else did Jesus say?

  64. Tell me something new.

  65. Tell me something I haven't heard already.

  66. I mean, we all kind of know this, don't we?

  67. This is kind of Christianity 101.

  68. This is like basic, foundational,

  69. elementary stuff of being a Christian, right?

  70. Love.

  71. Yep.

  72. I learned about that a long time ago.

  73. So then here's my question.

  74. Why, of all the things

  75. that Jesus could be saying

  76. to his disciples

  77. in this last words kind of moment,

  78. why is he telling them

  79. to love one another?

  80. I mean, these are grown men

  81. that he's talking to.

  82. These are best buds

  83. who have just been

  84. on one of the most amazing adventures

  85. of a lifetime

  86. over the past three years.

  87. Why is he speaking to them

  88. like children?

  89. Telling them something so basic,

  90. so obvious,

  91. so elementary.

  92. I mean, this is what those of us

  93. with kids say to our children,

  94. isn't it?

  95. When they get into fights

  96. with each other,

  97. we say,

  98. stop it, guys.

  99. Stop being unkind to one another.

  100. You need to love one another.

  101. And they look at you,

  102. and you say,

  103. well, is that thing

  104. that you were doing to her loving?

  105. No.

  106. No.

  107. No.

  108. So why is Jesus speaking

  109. to these grown men,

  110. these adults here in the room

  111. around the table

  112. like they're selfish little children?

  113. Is it possible

  114. that full-grown adults

  115. like you and me

  116. are still often acting

  117. like selfish little children?

  118. Well, we don't actually

  119. have to wonder

  120. because we actually know

  121. that these full-grown adults

  122. around the table,

  123. Peter, James, John,

  124. and the others,

  125. we know

  126. that just before this,

  127. they were actually arguing

  128. and fighting

  129. at the table.

  130. Luke, in his gospel,

  131. tells us right after Judas

  132. kind of left the room

  133. to betray Jesus,

  134. a dispute also arose

  135. among the disciples

  136. as to which of them

  137. was considered

  138. to be the greatest.

  139. So yes,

  140. they were behaving

  141. like self-centered children,

  142. and they needed to be told,

  143. the way that you are

  144. treating each other

  145. is unkind.

  146. You need to love one another.

  147. And so the first step

  148. to really noticing

  149. these words of Jesus again

  150. and appreciating them

  151. is admitting

  152. that this command,

  153. these words

  154. that Jesus is saying,

  155. they're not just

  156. for kids,

  157. for children.

  158. They're not just something

  159. that we needed to hear

  160. back at the beginning

  161. of our faith journey.

  162. Jesus isn't wasting

  163. his breath here

  164. by telling them something

  165. that they don't really

  166. need to hear

  167. because they've been living

  168. like this the whole time.

  169. No.

  170. This command

  171. is precisely

  172. what they needed

  173. to hear.

  174. And I want to say

  175. to you this morning,

  176. it's precisely

  177. what we

  178. here in this room

  179. need to hear

  180. as well,

  181. as much as

  182. our own children do.

  183. It's something

  184. we all have need of,

  185. to love one another.

  186. In some cases,

  187. to stop treating

  188. the other person

  189. as if it's all about me.

  190. In other cases,

  191. to stop speaking

  192. to the other

  193. unkind words

  194. or words behind

  195. their back.

  196. In some cases,

  197. to stop having

  198. an attitude

  199. towards

  200. that person

  201. of,

  202. I'm better than you

  203. or I'm more mature

  204. than you.

  205. In other cases,

  206. to stop ignoring

  207. or giving the cold

  208. shoulder

  209. to someone.

  210. In some cases,

  211. to stop holding

  212. a grudge

  213. against that person

  214. for that thing

  215. that they did

  216. to you one time

  217. or maybe that short

  218. list of things

  219. that they did

  220. or said to you

  221. over the years

  222. and more.

  223. Love one another.

  224. It means

  225. not just stopping

  226. that selfish

  227. attitudes,

  228. those ways,

  229. those unkind behaviors.

  230. It means

  231. also starting

  232. and doing

  233. the kind things,

  234. the good things,

  235. the right things

  236. to one another.

  237. Believe it or not,

  238. I've even heard

  239. Christians say about me,

  240. not about me,

  241. but to me,

  242. about other Christians.

  243. I've heard them say,

  244. well,

  245. I'm not angry

  246. at that person.

  247. I'm not holding anything

  248. against them.

  249. I just don't want

  250. to be around them

  251. or have anything

  252. to do with them.

  253. Listen,

  254. Jesus didn't say,

  255. a new command I give you,

  256. stop treating each other badly.

  257. that's a start,

  258. but it doesn't go

  259. the whole way.

  260. Jesus is not looking

  261. for a bunch of followers

  262. who are apathetic

  263. and uncaring

  264. and indifferent

  265. towards one another

  266. and just kind of show up

  267. on Sunday,

  268. go through the motions

  269. and then go their separate ways

  270. and have nothing to do

  271. with each other's lives.

  272. No.

  273. The command is,

  274. love one another.

  275. Think about one another

  276. the thoughts

  277. that love thinks.

  278. Say to one another

  279. the kind of words

  280. that love speaks.

  281. Do to one another

  282. the kind of things

  283. that love does.

  284. Initiate with one another.

  285. Give generously

  286. to one another.

  287. Serve and meet

  288. the needs of each other.

  289. Cry with those

  290. who are mourning.

  291. Celebrate

  292. with those

  293. who are rejoicing.

  294. Actually care

  295. about the other person

  296. and what's going on

  297. in their lives.

  298. Speak to them

  299. in such a way

  300. as to build them up

  301. and help them

  302. and encourage them.

  303. Move towards

  304. the needy

  305. with a willing heart

  306. and with open hands.

  307. Listen to what

  308. that other person

  309. is saying.

  310. Find out what's really

  311. going on in their lives.

  312. Bear with that brother

  313. or sister

  314. when they are

  315. less than lovely.

  316. All of these things

  317. are examples

  318. of what it

  319. sometimes looks like

  320. to love one another.

  321. And as I was thinking

  322. about it this week

  323. you know

  324. it's kind of a really

  325. hard thing to describe

  326. or to define

  327. love.

  328. Because love

  329. thinks

  330. and says

  331. and does

  332. a thousand

  333. different things

  334. depending on the situation.

  335. Depending on the situation.

  336. Depending on the need.

  337. Depending on what you have.

  338. Depending on the kind

  339. of relationship it is.

  340. It's amazing really.

  341. Love is

  342. one of the most

  343. beautiful things

  344. that we know.

  345. It's like a

  346. mysterious

  347. and precious jewel

  348. with countless

  349. faces.

  350. and it's beauty

  351. comes from God

  352. himself.

  353. As it says

  354. in 1 John

    1 John 4 chapter mention

  355. chapter 4

  356. God

  357. is

  358. love.

  359. It's who he is.

  360. And a little bit

  361. down from that

  362. we love

  363. because he

  364. first

  365. loved us.

  366. love

  367. is that

  368. holy

  369. and most

  370. beautiful

  371. thing

  372. about God

  373. and his

  374. glory.

  375. That

  376. goodness

  377. inside of him

  378. that just

  379. flows

  380. out of him

  381. to his

  382. creation.

  383. It's not

  384. just a basic

  385. or elementary

  386. thing in the

  387. Christian life.

  388. Love

  389. loving

  390. is the

  391. highest

  392. glory

  393. to which

  394. we are

  395. called

  396. to be like

  397. our good

  398. kind

  399. patient

  400. generous

  401. compassionate

  402. and intentional

  403. God.

  404. And so

  405. that's why

  406. Jesus is

  407. taking

  408. this precious

  409. time that he

  410. has left

  411. to give

  412. them

  413. this

  414. instruction

  415. because it's

  416. not just

  417. something that

  418. we need

  419. to learn

  420. at the

  421. beginning

  422. and then

  423. we're good

  424. to go.

  425. No.

  426. Loving

  427. one another

  428. is the

  429. full expression

  430. of God's

  431. glory

  432. in us

  433. that we

  434. are being

  435. saved

  436. in order

  437. to attain

  438. to

  439. for the

  440. rest of

  441. eternity.

  442. And it's

  443. not just

  444. one of

  445. many

  446. commands

  447. that Jesus

  448. gives.

  449. It's one

  450. of the

  451. highest,

  452. the greatest,

  453. the most

  454. important

  455. commands

  456. that he

  457. gives.

  458. Those of

  459. you who

  460. know the

  461. story,

  462. do you

  463. know what

  464. Jesus,

  465. do you

  466. remember

  467. what Jesus

  468. said earlier

  469. in the

  470. week when

  471. he was

  472. questioned

  473. by that

  474. expert

  475. in the

  476. law?

  477. That

  478. guy said

  479. to Jesus,

  480. teacher,

  481. which is

  482. the

  483. greatest

  484. commandment

  485. in the

  486. law?

  487. Jesus

  488. replied,

  489. love the

  490. Lord your

  491. God with

  492. all your

  493. heart and

  494. with all

  495. your soul

  496. and with

  497. all your

  498. mind.

  499. This is the

  500. first and

  501. greatest

  502. commandment,

  503. he said.

  504. And the

  505. second is

  506. like it.

  507. Love your

  508. neighbor as

  509. yourself.

  510. All the

  511. law and

  512. the prophets

  513. hang on

  514. these two

  515. commandments,

  516. said Jesus.

  517. Do you

  518. hear that?

  519. Loving God

  520. is the

  521. first,

  522. it's the

  523. greatest

  524. commandment.

  525. And loving

  526. our neighbors,

  527. loving one

  528. another is

  529. the second

  530. greatest

  531. commandment.

  532. love.

  533. So this

  534. whole thing

  535. of being

  536. commanded

  537. to love

  538. by Jesus,

  539. it's the

  540. first command

  541. that we

  542. should all

  543. learn.

  544. The one

  545. that we

  546. should focus

  547. on obeying

  548. and doing

  549. the most

  550. in our

  551. lives.

  552. It's the

  553. greatest and

  554. highest calling

  555. of every

  556. follower of

  557. Jesus.

  558. It's the

  559. thing that

  560. should most

  561. characterize

  562. our lives

  563. as followers

  564. of Christ.

  565. love.

  566. And not

  567. only that,

  568. says Jesus,

  569. but the

  570. whole of

  571. the instruction

  572. that God

  573. gave to

  574. Israel

  575. through

  576. Moses,

  577. the law,

  578. and the

  579. whole of

  580. the instruction

  581. that God

  582. gave to

  583. the nation

  584. of Israel

  585. afterwards,

  586. the prophets,

  587. all of that

  588. can be summed

  589. up by these

  590. two commands.

  591. The command

  592. to love.

  593. It's

  594. amazing.

  595. It tells

  596. us

  597. a couple

  598. things.

  599. It really

  600. is the

  601. most important

  602. instruction

  603. that we

  604. are given

  605. by God.

  606. Fulfilling

  607. all the

  608. other

  609. instructions

  610. that God

  611. gives,

  612. all the

  613. other

  614. commands

  615. God

  616. gives

  617. is bound

  618. up inside

  619. of these

  620. two.

  621. Love

  622. God

  623. and love

  624. one another.

  625. Love your

  626. neighbor.

  627. And second,

  628. it tells us

  629. again that

  630. loving is a

  631. many-faceted

  632. thing.

  633. I mean,

  634. think of the

  635. variety of

  636. things that

  637. God has

  638. said in

  639. the law

  640. and in

  641. the prophets

  642. that came

  643. afterwards.

  644. It's like

  645. saying that

  646. the entirety

  647. of the

  648. instruction

  649. given in

  650. the Old

  651. Testament,

  652. in all its

  653. variety,

  654. was calling

  655. people to

  656. just two

  657. things.

  658. Love for

  659. God

  660. and love

  661. for one

  662. another.

  663. God

  664. in fact,

  665. I would

  666. suggest to

  667. you this

  668. morning that

  669. the whole

  670. Bible has

  671. been given

  672. to us

  673. by God

  674. to show

  675. us what

  676. love really

  677. looks like

  678. in action.

  679. First,

  680. coming from

  681. God to

  682. us,

  683. and second,

  684. how it

  685. should flow

  686. from us

  687. to one

  688. another.

  689. So this

  690. is what

  691. Jesus said

  692. earlier in

  693. the week

  694. about our

  695. calling as

  696. God's people

  697. to love,

  698. but now

  699. here Jesus

  700. says a

  701. similar sort

  702. of thing

  703. to his

  704. disciples at

  705. the table

  706. on the eve

  707. of his

  708. betrayal,

  709. and there

  710. are just a

  711. few details

  712. in the way

  713. that Jesus

  714. says it

  715. that catch

  716. our attention.

  717. For starters,

  718. Jesus calls

  719. this a new

  720. commandment,

  721. a new

  722. command,

  723. again highlighting

  724. its importance.

  725. Think about

  726. what else Jesus

  727. has been doing

  728. at this table

  729. this very

  730. evening

  731. that's new.

  732. He's been

  733. giving the

  734. disciples a

  735. new way

  736. to mark

  737. the Passover,

  738. a thing

  739. to do

  740. in remembrance

  741. of him.

  742. He's told

  743. them that

  744. there's going

  745. to be a

  746. new covenant

  747. inaugurated,

  748. a new

  749. arrangement

  750. between God

  751. and his

  752. people that

  753. will be put

  754. into effect

  755. by his

  756. blood,

  757. his death.

  758. And then we

  759. come to this

  760. commandment,

  761. a new

  762. commandment

  763. to go with

  764. the new

  765. covenant.

  766. You'll

  767. remember that

  768. the old

  769. covenant that

  770. was made

  771. was made

  772. with the

  773. people of

  774. Israel at

  775. Mount Sinai.

  776. You'll

  777. remember that

  778. it came

  779. with

  780. commandments,

  781. ten of

  782. them,

  783. written on

  784. stone tablets

  785. and others

  786. given alongside.

  787. And one of

  788. those old

  789. commandments,

  790. not one of

  791. the ten,

  792. but one of

  793. the ones

  794. given alongside

  795. was what we

  796. just heard.

  797. It was,

  798. love your

  799. neighbor as

  800. yourself.

  801. love,

  802. which kind

  803. of brings

  804. us to

  805. this question.

  806. What's so

  807. new about

  808. this command

  809. to love

  810. one another?

  811. It seems

  812. like a kind

  813. of an old

  814. command.

  815. Why does

  816. Jesus say

  817. that this is

  818. a new

  819. command?

  820. And it's

  821. here we

  822. have to

  823. notice the

  824. next important

  825. detail.

  826. Jesus says,

  827. love one

  828. another as

  829. I have

  830. loved you.

  831. that's a

  832. little different

  833. than love

  834. your neighbor

  835. as yourself.

  836. In both

  837. cases,

  838. God is

  839. giving us

  840. a pattern

  841. to follow,

  842. some

  843. description

  844. of how

  845. we should

  846. love the

  847. other person.

  848. The old

  849. command that

  850. God gave

  851. was that

  852. we should

  853. love them

  854. in the same

  855. way that

  856. we love

  857. ourselves.

  858. And we

  859. all mostly

  860. love ourselves

  861. very much.

  862. We do

  863. all kinds

  864. of things

  865. for ourselves,

  866. for our own

  867. benefit,

  868. to make

  869. ourselves

  870. happy,

  871. to meet

  872. our own

  873. needs.

  874. And God

  875. was then

  876. calling us

  877. to show

  878. the same

  879. care and

  880. commitment

  881. that we

  882. show to

  883. ourselves,

  884. not just

  885. to ourselves,

  886. but also

  887. to the people

  888. around us,

  889. to our

  890. neighbors.

  891. But what's

  892. new about

  893. the new

  894. command is

  895. how we

  896. should love

  897. one another.

  898. Do you

  899. hear what

  900. Jesus says?

  901. No longer

  902. are we merely

  903. to model how

  904. we love

  905. one another

  906. after how

  907. we love

  908. ourselves.

  909. Now,

  910. says Jesus,

  911. in this new

  912. arrangement,

  913. as my

  914. people,

  915. I want you

  916. to model

  917. how you

  918. love one

  919. another

  920. after how

  921. I have

  922. loved

  923. you.

  924. Love one

  925. another

  926. as I

  927. have loved

  928. you.

  929. So you

  930. must love

  931. one another.

  932. another.

  933. And right

  934. here, we

  935. need to

  936. really

  937. pause.

  938. We need

  939. to linger.

  940. The

  941. temptation

  942. is to

  943. think,

  944. maybe,

  945. oh, well,

  946. how did

  947. Jesus love

  948. his

  949. disciples?

  950. Well,

  951. I'll do

  952. my best

  953. to love

  954. people like

  955. that,

  956. and then

  957. we just

  958. move on

  959. to the

  960. next thing,

  961. and we

  962. continue

  963. on the

  964. story.

  965. Check.

  966. I got

  967. the love

  968. command

  969. figured

  970. out.

  971. What's

  972. next?

  973. But have

  974. we got

  975. the love

  976. command

  977. figured

  978. out?

  979. This is

  980. the big

  981. question

  982. that we

  983. need to

  984. meditate

  985. long

  986. about.

  987. How did

  988. Jesus

  989. love

  990. his

  991. disciples?

  992. How did

  993. Jesus

  994. love

  995. his

  996. disciples?

  997. You

  998. know what?

  999. Let's

  1000. break out

  1001. of sermon

  1002. monologue

  1003. mode for

  1004. a second

  1005. here.

  1006. Let me

  1007. just put

  1008. it out

  1009. to you.

  1010. Let's

  1011. open it

  1012. up for

  1013. discussion.

  1014. How did

  1015. Jesus

  1016. love

  1017. his

  1018. disciples?

  1019. There's

  1020. lots of

  1021. right

  1022. answers

  1023. to

  1024. this.

  1025. Shout

  1026. them

  1027. out.

  1028. He

  1029. went to

  1030. the

  1031. cross.

  1032. Yes,

  1033. he died

  1034. for us.

  1035. And that's

  1036. probably the

  1037. first one

  1038. that comes

  1039. to mind.

  1040. It's the

  1041. biggest.

  1042. It's the

  1043. one that

  1044. shows

  1045. his

  1046. greatest,

  1047. the

  1048. greatness

  1049. of his

  1050. love for

  1051. us.

  1052. What

  1053. else?

  1054. he

  1055. spent time

  1056. with them.

  1057. Yes.

  1058. He washed

  1059. their feet.

  1060. A humble

  1061. act.

  1062. He was

  1063. patient with

  1064. them.

  1065. How many

  1066. times did

  1067. he try to

  1068. explain things

  1069. to them

  1070. and they

  1071. got,

  1072. it's like

  1073. they didn't

  1074. get it.

  1075. He didn't

  1076. get really

  1077. frustrated and

  1078. just say,

  1079. I'm done

  1080. with you

  1081. guys.

  1082. No,

  1083. he bore

  1084. with them.

  1085. He was

  1086. patient with

  1087. them.

  1088. Yeah.

  1089. He taught

  1090. them.

  1091. Yeah.

  1092. He forgave

  1093. them.

  1094. Yeah.

  1095. I think

  1096. of Peter

  1097. who denied

  1098. the Lord

  1099. three times

  1100. on the night

  1101. that he was

  1102. betrayed.

  1103. He said,

  1104. I don't

  1105. even know

  1106. that guy.

  1107. And Jesus

  1108. forgave him.

  1109. As I got

  1110. thinking about

  1111. this, I

  1112. realized there

  1113. are so

  1114. many ways.

  1115. He chose

  1116. them.

  1117. He initiated

  1118. with them.

  1119. He spoke

  1120. the truth to

  1121. them even

  1122. when it was

  1123. hard for

  1124. them to

  1125. hear it.

  1126. He invited

  1127. them along

  1128. for the

  1129. ride, the

  1130. adventure.

  1131. He revealed

  1132. his true

  1133. nature to

  1134. them.

  1135. He spoke

  1136. words of

  1137. encouragement

  1138. to them

  1139. like a

  1140. father does

  1141. to his

  1142. children.

  1143. There's a

  1144. time where

  1145. he made

  1146. breakfast for

  1147. them.

  1148. He cared

  1149. about their

  1150. needs even

  1151. more than

  1152. his own

  1153. needs when

  1154. he was in

  1155. his time

  1156. of deepest

  1157. trouble.

  1158. And the

  1159. list goes

  1160. on and

  1161. on and

  1162. on.

  1163. Suddenly,

  1164. I hope we

  1165. realize that we

  1166. need to go

  1167. back and read

  1168. through all

  1169. the Gospels

  1170. again and

  1171. just pay a

  1172. little bit

  1173. closer attention

  1174. to how

  1175. Jesus treated

  1176. people, how

  1177. he treated

  1178. all his

  1179. followers all

  1180. along the

  1181. way.

  1182. We can't

  1183. just say,

  1184. well, Jesus

  1185. did the

  1186. ultimate and

  1187. died for

  1188. them and so

  1189. we need to

  1190. love one

  1191. another really

  1192. deeply, really

  1193. self-sacrificially.

  1194. That's true.

  1195. That was the

  1196. greatest demonstration

  1197. of his love.

  1198. But there's

  1199. even more to

  1200. how Jesus

  1201. loved his

  1202. disciples than

  1203. that.

  1204. There's all

  1205. these countless

  1206. ways, some

  1207. of which you

  1208. guys mentioned,

  1209. that he's

  1210. loved them,

  1211. that's leading

  1212. up to that

  1213. moment where

  1214. he gives

  1215. his life for

  1216. them.

  1217. Then we

  1218. could go and

  1219. read through

  1220. Acts and the

  1221. epistles.

  1222. We could see

  1223. what the

  1224. apostles pointed

  1225. back to in

  1226. their letters

  1227. about how

  1228. Jesus loved

  1229. them and

  1230. taught them

  1231. to love in

  1232. different

  1233. situations, in

  1234. different

  1235. relationships,

  1236. different

  1237. contexts.

  1238. And so this

  1239. is why I say

  1240. that we really

  1241. have to linger

  1242. here.

  1243. We can't just

  1244. breeze past

  1245. this thing

  1246. that defines

  1247. the new

  1248. command.

  1249. As I have

  1250. loved you,

  1251. so you

  1252. must love

  1253. one another.

  1254. I was

  1255. thinking,

  1256. what can we

  1257. do to help

  1258. ourselves see

  1259. that we're

  1260. not done

  1261. with this

  1262. command?

  1263. I thought

  1264. about printing

  1265. up some

  1266. massive

  1267. looking

  1268. bookmarks

  1269. that just

  1270. had this

  1271. massive

  1272. heart that

  1273. just comes

  1274. right out

  1275. of your

  1276. Bible so

  1277. that everywhere

  1278. you go with

  1279. this thing,

  1280. it's like I

  1281. cannot not

  1282. see as I

  1283. have loved

  1284. you.

  1285. I'm not done

  1286. with that

  1287. yet.

  1288. I need to

  1289. keep learning.

  1290. How have

  1291. you loved

  1292. me, Lord?

  1293. And would

  1294. you teach me

  1295. to love

  1296. others, the

  1297. people in

  1298. my life like

  1299. that?

  1300. Don't worry,

  1301. I didn't

  1302. print those

  1303. up.

  1304. But maybe

  1305. that would

  1306. help some

  1307. of you.

  1308. I don't

  1309. know.

  1310. might help

  1311. me.

  1312. This

  1313. command to

  1314. love is

  1315. not just a

  1316. once in a

  1317. while thing.

  1318. It's not

  1319. just a, well

  1320. yeah, I

  1321. think I did

  1322. that at

  1323. least once

  1324. yesterday sort

  1325. of thing.

  1326. No.

  1327. It's an

  1328. everyday, all

  1329. of your life

  1330. sort of thing.

  1331. Consider for a

  1332. moment the

  1333. prayer of Paul

  1334. for the

  1335. Philippians.

  1336. This is what

  1337. Paul prayed as

  1338. he wrote in

  1339. his letter.

  1340. He said,

  1341. this is my

  1342. prayer, that

  1343. your love

  1344. may abound

  1345. more and

  1346. more in

  1347. knowledge and

  1348. depth of

  1349. insight so

  1350. that you may

  1351. be able to

  1352. discern what

  1353. is best and

  1354. may be pure

  1355. and blameless

  1356. for the day

  1357. of Christ,

  1358. filled with the

  1359. fruit of

  1360. righteousness that

  1361. comes through

  1362. Jesus Christ

  1363. to the glory

  1364. and praise of

  1365. God.

  1366. Now there's a

  1367. whole sermon

  1368. right there,

  1369. but just notice

  1370. for a second

  1371. the language.

  1372. Love for one

  1373. another is not

  1374. something we

  1375. achieve and

  1376. then kind of

  1377. move on from

  1378. to next things.

  1379. It's something

  1380. that we always

  1381. have room to

  1382. grow in.

  1383. And there's a

  1384. certain knowledge

  1385. and there's a

  1386. certain depth

  1387. of insight by

  1388. which our

  1389. love increases.

  1390. What knowledge,

  1391. what insight

  1392. is that?

  1393. it's

  1394. understanding

  1395. more and

  1396. more how

  1397. Jesus loved

  1398. people, how

  1399. he loved

  1400. us, you,

  1401. me.

  1402. He's the

  1403. ultimate example

  1404. of God's

  1405. glorious love.

  1406. And then there,

  1407. of course, is the

  1408. ultimate act of

  1409. love which Jesus

  1410. did for us.

  1411. We talked about

  1412. it already,

  1413. Charles mentioned

  1414. it.

  1415. He laid down

  1416. his life for

  1417. us.

  1418. He died for

  1419. us.

  1420. Even as we

  1421. consider this,

  1422. I mean, we

  1423. can never get to

  1424. the bottom of

  1425. just how much

  1426. he loves us.

  1427. He loved us to

  1428. do that for us.

  1429. We could talk

  1430. about how sinful

  1431. and deserving of

  1432. God's wrath that

  1433. we are.

  1434. We could talk

  1435. about how shameful

  1436. and painful his

  1437. suffering was and

  1438. what he endured

  1439. for our sake.

  1440. We could talk

  1441. about all the

  1442. spiritual blessings

  1443. and the blessings

  1444. of the life to

  1445. come that Jesus

  1446. wants to give us

  1447. for free.

  1448. Not because we

  1449. deserve them,

  1450. but simply because

  1451. he loves us.

  1452. All of these

  1453. required the

  1454. ultimate sacrifice

  1455. of the cross.

  1456. His love for us

  1457. is bottomless.

  1458. It's beyond

  1459. measure.

  1460. And Jesus has

  1461. commanded us to

  1462. love one another

  1463. in the same way

  1464. as he loved us.

  1465. At the very least,

  1466. it means that we

  1467. love one another

  1468. lavishly,

  1469. extravagantly,

  1470. as deeply as

  1471. his spirit

  1472. enables us

  1473. to do it.

  1474. Forgetting

  1475. ourselves,

  1476. leaving ourselves

  1477. behind for the

  1478. sake of one

  1479. another,

  1480. being there

  1481. with and for

  1482. one another

  1483. right to the

  1484. end,

  1485. even if it's

  1486. costly.

  1487. This is it.

  1488. This is the

  1489. most important

  1490. thing in the

  1491. Christian life,

  1492. except for our

  1493. call to love

  1494. God himself.

  1495. This is it.

  1496. This is

  1497. Christianity

  1498. at its core.

  1499. And in case

  1500. we miss the

  1501. importance of it,

  1502. Jesus says it

  1503. twice.

  1504. Love one

  1505. another as I

  1506. have loved you.

  1507. So you must

  1508. love one

  1509. another.

  1510. Why did he

  1511. say it twice?

  1512. Because it's

  1513. too important,

  1514. it's too great

  1515. to just say it

  1516. once.

  1517. Verse 35.

  1518. By this,

  1519. everyone will

  1520. know that you

  1521. are my

  1522. disciples

  1523. if you love

  1524. one another.

  1525. father.

  1526. Actually,

  1527. he just

  1528. snuck it

  1529. in the

  1530. third time

  1531. there.

  1532. What is

  1533. Jesus saying?

  1534. He's saying

  1535. the mark

  1536. of a true

  1537. Christian

  1538. is love

  1539. for his

  1540. fellow man.

  1541. There's a

  1542. way that the

  1543. people of the

  1544. world can

  1545. know that

  1546. you really

  1547. are a true

  1548. follower of

  1549. Jesus.

  1550. They will

  1551. see it in

  1552. the love

  1553. that you

  1554. have for

  1555. other people,

  1556. for one

  1557. another.

  1558. another.

  1559. There's a

  1560. way that the

  1561. people of

  1562. Davidson and

  1563. this surrounding

  1564. community can

  1565. know for

  1566. certain that

  1567. we are true

  1568. followers of

  1569. Jesus the

  1570. Christ.

  1571. Do they see

  1572. it in our

  1573. love for one

  1574. another?

  1575. Or do we

  1576. look much the

  1577. same as the

  1578. rest of

  1579. humanity?

  1580. Fighting and

  1581. arguing,

  1582. gossiping and

  1583. slandering,

  1584. breaking

  1585. our promises,

  1586. being self

  1587. absorbed,

  1588. splitting and

  1589. dividing over

  1590. this and that

  1591. and the other

  1592. thing?

  1593. If that's all

  1594. that people see

  1595. of us,

  1596. what are they

  1597. to conclude

  1598. about us?

  1599. But that we're

  1600. nothing like the

  1601. Jesus that we

  1602. confess.

  1603. Listen,

  1604. Jesus says

  1605. there is a

  1606. way for

  1607. people to

  1608. know that

  1609. you are my

  1610. disciple.

  1611. They will

  1612. know because

  1613. of the way

  1614. that you love

  1615. and treat

  1616. other people.

  1617. they will

  1618. see that the

  1619. way that you

  1620. treat them is

  1621. out of this

  1622. world.

  1623. It's rare.

  1624. It's

  1625. exceptional.

  1626. It's

  1627. outstanding.

  1628. They'll think,

  1629. man, this

  1630. guy who met me

  1631. just three weeks

  1632. ago cares more

  1633. about me than

  1634. my own family

  1635. or my friends.

  1636. I've known for

  1637. years.

  1638. They're around for

  1639. me when things

  1640. are good, but

  1641. when things are

  1642. going bad, where

  1643. are they?

  1644. But this

  1645. Jesus follower

  1646. who goes to

  1647. the Bible

  1648. church is

  1649. there for me

  1650. through thick

  1651. and thin.

  1652. There's got to

  1653. be more to

  1654. this Jesus

  1655. than I

  1656. originally

  1657. thought.

  1658. There's so

  1659. much more

  1660. that we could

  1661. say about all

  1662. this.

  1663. We could talk

  1664. about how it's

  1665. the spirit of

  1666. Christ living

  1667. in us who

  1668. enables us to

  1669. love like this

  1670. the way that

  1671. Jesus did.

  1672. We could talk

  1673. about what

  1674. love does and

  1675. says and thinks

  1676. towards people in

  1677. all kinds of

  1678. situations.

  1679. We could talk

  1680. about how

  1681. valuable our

  1682. lives are if

  1683. love's missing.

  1684. 1 Corinthians

  1685. 13.

  1686. This really is

  1687. one of those

  1688. things, one of

  1689. those times where

  1690. the whole rest of

  1691. the Bible adds

  1692. to the meaning

  1693. of Jesus'

  1694. command.

  1695. It gives us

  1696. understanding about

  1697. how we should

  1698. love as we

  1699. ought to.

  1700. But that's

  1701. where we all

  1702. need to be on

  1703. the journey.

  1704. We need to be

  1705. reading.

  1706. We need to be

  1707. meditating on

  1708. God's word daily

  1709. so that we can

  1710. grow not just in

  1711. our faith, not

  1712. just in our

  1713. understanding, not

  1714. just in our

  1715. hope and our

  1716. joy, but in

  1717. our love for

  1718. each other.

  1719. Let's pray.

  1720. Lord Jesus, we

  1721. thank you for

  1722. this command which

  1723. you speak not

  1724. just to your

  1725. disciples then and

  1726. there in the

  1727. room, but to us

  1728. today, all of us

  1729. who believe in

  1730. your name.

  1731. Give us ears to

  1732. hear.

  1733. Make us truly,

  1734. deeply loving

  1735. people.

  1736. Help us to

  1737. give up, to lay

  1738. down our lives in

  1739. whatever ways that

  1740. looks like for each

1741. one of us to live

  1742. this out, to

  1743. bless the people

  1744. that you've placed

  1745. in our lives.

  1746. Fill us with your

  1747. Holy Spirit.

  1748. We ask in Jesus'

  1749. name.

  1750. Amen.
