  1. Well, we'll begin our time in God's Word this morning by reading our passage, and it comes from the Gospel of John, chapter 14.

    John 14 chapter mention

  2. If you have your Bible with you, you can open it up. We'll be reading the first six verses.

  3. The Gospel of John, chapter 14, verses 1 to 6. This is Jesus talking.

    John 14:1–6

  4. Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God. Believe also in me.

  5. My Father's house has many rooms. If that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?

  6. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me, that you also may be where I am.

  7. You know the way to the place where I am going.

  8. Thomas said to him, Lord, we don't know where you're going, so how can we know the way?

  9. Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life.

  10. No one comes to the Father except through me.

  11. Many of these words of Jesus are quite familiar to us.

  12. Some of them are often quoted or found in devotionals, such as verse 1.

  13. Do not let your hearts be troubled.

  14. Believe in God. Believe also in me.

  15. Some of them are found in songs, such as verse 2.

  16. My Father's house has many rooms, or as the old King James says, mansions.

  17. If that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?

  18. And some of these words are known to be among Jesus' greatest claims.

  19. Verse 6.

  20. I am the way, the truth, and the life.

  21. No one comes to the Father except through me.

  22. So if you've been following Jesus for a while now, you probably know these words quite well.

  23. These words are all somewhat direct and straightforward.

  24. And so often when we read them, we imagine Jesus speaking them right to us.

  25. But I wonder sometimes if we have taken the time to reflect on how these words hit the men

  26. that were seated around the table that night with Jesus.

  27. It's the night of Jesus' betrayal.

  28. The Passover meal has just been served.

  29. The bread and the cup passed around.

  30. Judas has already left the building.

  31. And Jesus is giving his last words to his disciples before his arrest and execution.

  32. There's been kind of an ominous tone to this night so far.

  33. Jesus has been quite troubled, we heard earlier.

  34. He's been speaking about his betrayal.

  35. He's been hinting at his death through this symbolic gesture with bread and with cup.

  36. And just now he has told them right before this, which we heard last week or a week before,

  37. he will be with them only a little while longer.

  38. He's about to go somewhere that they cannot follow him.

  39. So I want you to imagine this morning that you are one of the disciples seated around the table with Jesus this night,

  40. seeing and hearing these things.

  41. What are you thinking?

  42. Perhaps you're thinking,

  43. what's going on here?

  44. What are you talking about, Jesus?

  45. Why are you so troubled?

  46. A traitor among us?

  47. Who?

  48. You're leaving us?

  49. When?

  50. Like tonight?

  51. Tomorrow?

  52. Surely not while we're here in Jerusalem.

  53. With all that's going on,

  54. the disciples were deeply troubled that night.

  55. Probably they were quite anxious,

  56. having no clear picture about how things were going to unfold,

  57. what was coming next.

  58. And usually when trouble arose,

  59. Jesus was their emotional rock.

  60. I think about that time when there was a storm out on the Sea of Galilee

  61. and Jesus was sleeping in the boat.

  62. That was kind of a picture of how Jesus often was in the midst of trouble with his disciples.

  63. He was calm.

  64. He was cool.

  65. He was collected.

  66. Seemingly unbothered by the threats and the plots of the religious leaders.

  67. As fearless as a man can be.

  68. And he was always encouraging them.

  69. But now even Jesus seems deeply troubled.

  70. So if I'm sitting at the table with Jesus

  71. and he's troubled,

  72. I'm starting to feel a little unsettled.

  73. And now you're telling us, Jesus, that you're going away?

  74. You're leaving us all on our own?

  75. Well, Jesus sees the anxiety and the unsettledness in their hearts.

  76. He can read the confusion and the distress in their faces.

  77. So he looks around the table

  78. and he says these words,

  79. Do not let your hearts be troubled.

  80. Now, if that was all Jesus said,

  81. these words might feel kind of cliche,

  82. maybe a little empty.

  83. I mean, how many of you have been in a situation

  84. where somebody saw that you were worried

  85. and they just kind of said to you,

  86. Don't worry about it.

  87. Just stop worrying.

  88. Don't worry.

  89. I mean, those words by themselves,

  90. they don't really help a whole lot.

  91. Whenever we hear that,

  92. we're kind of waiting to hear

  93. what the person's going to say next.

  94. Like, why shouldn't I worry?

  95. Do you have some good news for me?

  96. Is there something you see in this situation

  97. or understand about it that I don't?

  98. Maybe you've got some timely wisdom

  99. or encouragement for me.

  100. I mean, I'm feeling anxious about things.

  101. And oftentimes when we feel anxious,

  102. it seems, to us at least,

  103. that we're anxious for good reason.

  104. So there's got to be more here than just,

  105. Well, don't let your hearts be troubled.

  106. Jesus isn't just saying,

  107. Stop feeling that way.

  108. It's not good.

  109. It's bad for you.

  110. There's got to be more.

  111. What truth will Jesus speak

  112. to put our hearts at rest?

  113. To give us deep, inward peace

  114. instead of anxiety

  115. in the midst of this storm that's brewing?

  116. Well, one of the things we often hear

  117. from other people is,

  118. Don't worry.

  119. Everything's going to be all right.

  120. Everything's going to be okay.

  121. Nothing bad's going to happen.

  122. Does Jesus say that?

  123. No.

  124. I mean, if Jesus did say that to the disciples,

  125. we might take that as a comfort

  126. because Jesus is right about

  127. what's coming down the line

  128. a hundred percent of the time.

  129. That would be quite comforting.

  130. But most of the time

  131. when other people say this to us,

  132. you know,

  133. everything's going to be all right.

  134. We know that they're just trying

  135. to make us feel better

  136. or to ease our fears.

  137. And maybe inside,

  138. as they say that to us,

  139. we're wondering,

  140. Well, how do you know

  141. that it's going to go well?

  142. That everything's going to be all right?

  143. What if my fears,

  144. what if my concerns are reasonable?

  145. What if there is some real

  146. potential of danger here?

  147. Something I should be worrying about?

  148. No.

  149. Jesus doesn't say

  150. everything's going to be just fine.

  151. Because the truth is,

  152. God allows us

  153. to go through things

  154. that aren't always just fine.

  155. Jesus is about to suffer

  156. something terrible.

  157. Something bad is about to happen.

  158. And even though it will,

  159. in the end,

  160. it will all be fine,

  161. in the meantime,

  162. it's going to be awful.

  163. It's going to be horrible.

  164. It'll be almost unbearable

  165. for the disciples.

  166. So Jesus doesn't give them

  167. some false hope.

  168. Instead,

  169. he points their attention

  170. to the only thing

  171. that can be their anchor

  172. in the midst of the storm

  173. that's coming.

  174. Jesus says,

  175. believe in God.

  176. Believe also in me.

  177. Now there's some variety

  178. in the translations here.

  179. You may notice this

  180. in your Bibles.

  181. Some have it as a statement.

  182. You believe in God?

  183. Believe also in me.

  184. Others have it as a question.

  185. Do you believe in God?

  186. Believe also in me.

  187. And some have it

  188. as a kind of parallel commands.

  189. Believe in God.

  190. Believe also in me.

  191. And unfortunately,

  192. today it's not possible

  193. to know which one Jesus meant

  194. because in the original language

  195. it could be either a statement,

  196. a question,

  197. or a command.

  198. All of it is spelled

  199. the exact same way.

  200. Probably the Greeks

  201. in John's day

  202. would have understood

  203. simply by the context

  204. which it was.

  205. And we're kind of left today

  206. to guess.

  207. My guess is that

  208. Jesus is just simply

  209. encouraging them

  210. to believe in God.

  211. That this is a command.

  212. That this is a word

  213. of instruction.

  214. Just as he often did

  215. when he chided them

  216. for their lack of faith.

  217. Believe in God.

  218. What will set the hearts

  219. of the disciples at rest

  220. with the uncertainty

  221. and sorrow

  222. and grief

  223. of the days ahead?

  224. God will.

  225. No thing

  226. can give peace.

  227. True peace,

  228. a settled heart

  229. will only come

  230. through relationship

  231. with God.

  232. And so Jesus instructs

  233. the disciples

  234. to look to him.

  235. And not just

  236. to look to him

  237. but to believe in him,

  238. to trust him.

  239. have you ever had

  240. this experience before

  241. where you're worried

  242. about something

  243. or maybe even

  244. you're just worried

  245. and overwhelmed

  246. about everything

  247. and you open

  248. your Bible

  249. and you start

  250. to pray

  251. and you begin

  252. to read

  253. and take to heart

  254. the things

  255. that you're reading.

  256. Things about God,

  257. things about you,

  258. things about our world

  259. and suddenly,

  260. almost unexplainably,

  261. it's like the worry

  262. just lifts.

  263. The anxiety

  264. evaporates

  265. and this deep

  266. settled peace

  267. sets in

  268. to your heart.

  269. all of a sudden

  270. you come to see

  271. that you don't need

  272. to worry

  273. about anything

  274. because God

  275. is powerful,

  276. he's good,

  277. he's in control

  278. of everything,

  279. he's directing

  280. everything

  281. for our good,

  282. he loves us,

  283. he knows

  284. what we need,

  285. he's watching

  286. over us

  287. and even

  288. if he allows us

  289. to go through

  290. something

  291. that's hard,

  292. he promises us

  293. in these pages

  294. to be with us,

  295. to carry us

  296. through it

  297. and we find

  298. in these pages

  299. assurance

  300. that he never

  301. breaks his promises.

  302. We read

  303. in these pages

  304. that no matter

  305. how it goes

  306. in the short term,

  307. in the long term,

  308. we win,

  309. we have victory

  310. through Jesus,

  311. everlasting life

  312. with him.

  313. I hope you've

  314. had that experience

  315. before,

  316. I know I have

  317. and it's such

  318. a blessing.

  319. The great

  320. antidote

  321. to anxiety

  322. and worry

  323. is simply

  324. this,

  325. believe

  326. in God,

  327. put your trust

  328. in God

  329. and Jesus

  330. follows this

  331. up with a

  332. second word

  333. of instruction,

  334. he says,

  335. believe also

  336. in me.

  337. We're going

  338. to see this

  339. more and more

  340. in the verses

  341. ahead here,

  342. Jesus will

  343. emphasize his

  344. oneness

  345. with God

  346. the Father,

  347. he will speak

  348. to the disciples

  349. in terms

  350. which put him

  351. on the same

  352. level

  353. as God.

  354. Trust in

  355. God,

  356. he says,

  357. trust also

  358. in me.

  359. Now,

  360. what does this

  361. mean for the

  362. disciples?

  363. Think about

  364. their story,

  365. think about

  366. what they've

  367. been through.

  368. Jesus is

  369. calling them

  370. to count

  371. as true

  372. everything

  373. that he has

  374. been saying

  375. to them

  376. up until

  377. now,

  378. everything

  379. they've come

  380. to believe

  381. about him

  382. up until

  383. now.

  384. It's like

  385. Jesus is

  386. saying,

  387. hold on

  388. to that

  389. faith that

  390. you have

  391. in me.

  392. Believe

  393. in me.

  394. And why

  395. is this

  396. so important?

  397. Because

  398. from a

  399. human

  400. perspective,

  401. everything

  402. is about

  403. to go

  404. wrong

  405. for Jesus

  406. in the

  407. next

  408. hours.

  409. By

  410. tomorrow,

  411. they will

  412. see his

  413. dead body

  414. hanging on

  415. a Roman

  416. cross.

  417. And the

  418. temptation

  419. to doubt

  420. all that

  421. Jesus has

  422. said to

  423. them over

  424. the past

  425. weeks and

  426. months and

  427. years will

  428. be very

  429. strong.

  430. The majority

  431. of the Jews

  432. will be decrying

  433. Jesus as a

  434. blasphemer and

  435. a fraud,

  436. a man worthy

  437. of death.

  438. Some will be

  439. saying,

  440. look, if he

  441. really was the

  442. Messiah, this

  443. would never

  444. have happened

  445. to him.

  446. if he

  447. really was

  448. the son

  449. of God,

  450. he'd be

  451. able to

  452. save

  453. himself.

  454. So this

  455. is the

  456. moment of

  457. testing.

  458. This is the

  459. big question.

  460. Will the

  461. disciples hold

  462. on to their

  463. faith in

  464. Jesus through

  465. all this?

  466. Or will

  467. their faith

  468. in him

  469. wither and

  470. die as

  471. they watch

  472. this unfold?

  473. Believe in

  474. me also,

  475. says Jesus.

  476. You're going

  477. to have to

  478. simply trust

  479. me through

  480. all this.

  481. Those of

  482. you who

  483. have had

  484. children or

  485. have spent

  486. time with

  487. young children,

  488. perhaps you

  489. found yourself

  490. saying words

  491. like these

  492. to your

  493. kids.

  494. Just trust

  495. me.

  496. the worry

  497. in a

  498. child's

  499. heart can

  500. sometimes

  501. gush and

  502. flow with

  503. such strength.

  504. What about

  505. this,

  506. mom?

  507. Dad,

  508. what about

  509. that?

  510. What if

  511. this happens

  512. to our

  513. family?

  514. And on

  515. and on

  516. it can

  517. go and

  518. come.

  519. And you

  520. find yourself

  521. saying those

  522. words,

  523. trust me.

  524. As

  525. parents,

  526. we've lived

  527. a few years

  528. longer than

  529. our children

  530. have.

  531. We know

  532. how things

  533. go.

  534. We have

  535. experience.

  536. We know

  537. when the

  538. fears and

  539. the anxiety

  540. of our

  541. children are

  542. so far

  543. beyond the

  544. realm of

  545. possibility

  546. that it's

  547. just simply

  548. not going

  549. to happen

  550. that way.

  551. But no

  552. matter how

  553. hard we

  554. try to

  555. reason with

  556. them,

  557. sometimes we

  558. simply come

  559. to that

  560. moment in

  561. the conversation

  562. where we

  563. just ask

  564. them to

  565. trust us.

  566. To just

  567. lay aside

  568. all those

  569. worries and

  570. fears about

  571. a situation

  572. and to

  573. accept what

  574. we tell

  575. them about

  576. what's going

  577. on.

  578. What are

  579. we doing?

  580. We're calling

  581. our kids to

  582. take their

  583. eyes,

  584. off of

  585. the endless

  586. uncertainties

  587. and instead

  588. to just put

  589. their eyes

  590. on us.

  591. Someone they

  592. know who

  593. has been

  594. there,

  595. who has

  596. been through

  597. that,

  598. who understands

  599. how this

  600. works.

  601. Just trust

  602. me,

  603. says Jesus.

  604. Believe in

  605. me.

  606. Even though

  607. you can't see

  608. what's coming,

  609. even though

  610. your feelings

  611. and your

  612. thoughts will

  613. betray you,

  614. believe in

  615. me.

  616. Remember the

  617. things I

  618. said.

  619. Remember the

  620. things I

  621. did.

  622. As surely

  623. as you can

  624. trust God

  625. to look after

  626. you,

  627. you can

  628. trust me.

  629. Believe in

  630. me,

  631. says Jesus.

  632. All the

  633. things I said

  634. to you,

  635. they will all

  636. hold true,

  637. even through

  638. the storm

  639. that's

  640. coming.

  641. Well,

  642. how about

  643. you this

  644. morning,

  645. today,

  646. here?

  647. Do you

  648. have some

  649. anxieties,

  650. some fears,

  651. some worries

  652. that have been

  653. gnawing away

  654. at you?

  655. Certain trains

  656. of anxious

  657. thoughts that

  658. keep coming

  659. back,

  660. that have

  661. been troubling

  662. you over the

  663. past days,

  664. maybe weeks.

  665. We may not

  666. be in the

  667. exact same

  668. situation as

  669. the disciples

  670. were that

  671. night.

  672. I mean,

  673. they were

  674. about to

  675. live through

  676. arguably some

  677. of the

  678. most soul

  679. wrenching,

  680. sorrowful

  681. trouble

  682. imaginable.

  683. But did

  684. God fail

  685. them?

  686. Did

  687. Jesus

  688. fail

  689. them?

  690. If God

  691. could bring

  692. them through

  693. their time

  694. of trouble,

  695. can he not

  696. bring you

  697. through yours

  698. and me

  699. through mine?

  700. If Jesus

  701. promises to

  702. them held

  703. true,

  704. even though

  705. they watched

  706. him die,

  707. before their

  708. very eyes,

  709. will his

  710. promises to

  711. you and

  712. me not

  713. hold true

  714. as well?

  715. I believe

  716. Jesus would

  717. say these

  718. very same

  719. words to

  720. us today

  721. about whatever

  722. troubles,

  723. whatever anxieties,

  724. whatever worries

  725. are rising in

  726. our own

  727. hearts.

  728. Do not

  729. let your

  730. hearts be

  731. troubled.

  732. Believe

  733. in God.

  734. Believe

  735. also in

  736. me.

  737. now we

  738. come to

  739. verse

  740. two.

  741. Very

  742. familiar,

  743. precious

  744. words.

  745. He says

  746. to them,

  747. my father's

  748. house has

  749. many rooms.

  750. If that

  751. were not

  752. so,

  753. would I

  754. have told

  755. you that

  756. I am

  757. going there

  758. to prepare

  759. a place

  760. for you?

  761. And if

  762. I go

  763. and prepare

  764. a place

  765. for you,

  766. I will

  767. come back

  768. and take

  769. you to

  770. be with

  771. me,

  772. that you

  773. also may

  774. be where

  775. I am.

  776. Finally,

  777. here comes

  778. the specific

  779. truth that

  780. the disciples

  781. have been

  782. waiting for,

  783. the truth

  784. that will

  785. undo their

  786. anxieties

  787. and settle

  788. their troubled

  789. hearts.

  790. What are the

  791. disciples worried

  792. about here?

  793. Well,

  794. as we've

  795. seen,

  796. there's lots

  797. of things

  798. going on

  799. that they

  800. could be

  801. worried

  802. about,

  803. but one

  804. of the

  805. specific

  806. things

  807. that they're

  808. worried

  809. about

  810. is Jesus

  811. leaving

  812. them.

  813. Glance

  814. back up

  815. to verse

  816. 33 of

  817. the previous

  818. chapter.

  819. Jesus

  820. says,

  821. My children,

  822. I will

  823. be with

  824. you only

  825. a little

  826. longer.

  827. Where I

  828. am going,

  829. you cannot

  830. come.

  831. And it

  832. was Peter

  833. who asked

  834. the Lord,

  835. Lord,

  836. where are

  837. you going?

  838. Verse

  839. 36,

  840. and Lord,

  841. why can't

  842. I follow

  843. you now?

  844. verse 37,

  845. and now

  846. it's Thomas

  847. expressing his

  848. concern.

  849. Lord,

  850. we don't

  851. know where

  852. you're going,

  853. so how can

  854. we know

  855. the way?

  856. This is a

  857. big deal

  858. for the

  859. disciples.

  860. They've been

  861. with Jesus

  862. for the

  863. past three

  864. years now,

  865. following

  866. him everywhere

  867. he goes,

  868. traveling with

  869. him,

  870. living with

  871. him,

  872. eating their

  873. meals with

  874. him.

  875. By now,

  876. some of

  877. their lives

  878. and what

  879. they were

  880. doing before

  881. this,

  882. their jobs,

  883. all of it's

  884. kind of starting

  885. to fade into

  886. the background.

  887. They've been

  888. part of this

  889. incredible

  890. experience.

  891. They've found

  892. the Messiah,

  893. God's chosen

  894. king for

  895. Israel,

  896. and they've

  897. been following

  898. with great

  899. anticipation,

  900. waiting to

  901. see how all

  902. of this

  903. will unfold,

  904. how God

  905. will restore

  906. the kingdom

  907. to Israel.

  908. And what's

  909. more,

  910. they've been

  911. there through

  912. all of the

  913. tensions that

  914. have been

  915. rising between

  916. Jesus and

  917. the religious

  918. leaders,

  919. tensions that

  920. are now at

  921. a breaking

  922. point.

  923. And you're

  924. telling us

  925. now that

  926. you're leaving

  927. us?

  928. That you're

  929. going away?

  930. Well, no

  931. wonder they're

  932. feeling troubled

  933. in heart,

  934. worried,

  935. anxious,

  936. unsettled.

  937. But now

  938. Jesus gives

  939. them the

  940. truth that

  941. they need

  942. to set

  943. their hearts

  944. at rest.

  945. My

  946. Father's

  947. house has

  948. many rooms.

  949. If that

  950. were not so,

  951. would I have

  952. told you that

  953. I'm going

  954. there to

  955. prepare a

  956. place for

  957. you?

  958. And if

  959. I go

  960. and prepare

  961. a place

  962. for you,

  963. I will

  964. come back

  965. and take

  966. you to be

  967. with me,

  968. that you

  969. also may

  970. be where

  971. I am.

  972. What is

  973. the overall

  974. truth here

  975. that will

  976. set their

  977. hearts at

  978. rest?

  979. The truth

  980. is that

  981. even though

  982. Jesus is

  983. going away,

  984. even though

  985. Jesus is

  986. leaving,

  987. there's a

  988. purpose.

  989. And there's

  990. a promise

  991. that he will

  992. return and

  993. that they

  994. will be

  995. together again.

  996. First, the

  997. purpose.

  998. Why is

  999. Jesus leaving?

  1000. for what

  1001. reason is

  1002. he going

  1003. away?

  1004. Jesus

  1005. says, I'm

  1006. going to

  1007. prepare a

  1008. place for

  1009. you.

  1010. And if

  1011. I'm there

  1012. at the

  1013. table, I'm

  1014. imagining all

  1015. kinds of

  1016. questions rising

  1017. in my own

  1018. mind, things

  1019. the disciples

  1020. might be

  1021. thinking of,

  1022. questions like,

  1023. well, what

  1024. kind of

  1025. preparations?

  1026. What needs

  1027. to be prepared

  1028. there in

  1029. that place?

  1030. What kind

  1031. of place are

  1032. you talking

  1033. about?

  1034. where is

  1035. it?

  1036. And

  1037. unfortunately,

  1038. Jesus doesn't

  1039. elaborate in

  1040. detail on

  1041. every one of

  1042. these questions.

  1043. He doesn't

  1044. say what kind

  1045. of preparations

  1046. need to be

  1047. made.

  1048. He doesn't

  1049. say what

  1050. needs to be

  1051. done there

  1052. to prepare

  1053. this place

  1054. in the

  1055. Father's

  1056. house.

  1057. And so

  1058. we're back

  1059. to just

  1060. trust me,

  1061. believe me,

  1062. there's work

  1063. that I need

  1064. to do to

  1065. make things

  1066. ready so

  1067. that there's

  1068. a place for

  1069. you in my

  1070. Father's house,

  1071. says Jesus.

  1072. But then

  1073. with that

  1074. purpose comes

  1075. a promise,

  1076. a wonderful

  1077. promise.

  1078. Jesus says,

  1079. if I am

  1080. going to

  1081. prepare for

  1082. you a place

  1083. in my

  1084. Father's house,

  1085. then most

  1086. certainly I

  1087. will come

  1088. back and

  1089. take you

  1090. to be with

  1091. me so

  1092. that you

  1093. also may

  1094. be where I

  1095. am.

  1096. So the

  1097. disciples are

  1098. worried that

  1099. Jesus is

  1100. leaving and

  1101. the truth

  1102. that will set

  1103. their hearts

  1104. at rest is

  1105. that he's not

  1106. leaving forever.

  1107. I will

  1108. come back

  1109. and I

  1110. will take

  1111. you to

  1112. be with

  1113. me.

  1114. This won't

  1115. be the end

  1116. of our time

  1117. together,

  1118. says Jesus.

  1119. Oh, it's

  1120. been a sweet

  1121. past three

  1122. years for

  1123. these men

  1124. to be on

  1125. the journey

  1126. with Jesus,

  1127. to do life

  1128. together with

  1129. Jesus so

  1130. closely.

  1131. But know

  1132. this, says

  1133. Jesus,

  1134. this is not

  1135. the end of

  1136. our time

  1137. together.

  1138. I must

  1139. go, I

  1140. must make

  1141. preparation,

  1142. but I

  1143. will come

  1144. back and

  1145. you will

  1146. be with

  1147. me again.

  1148. Like this,

  1149. close,

  1150. personal

  1151. relationship,

  1152. fellowship,

  1153. just like

  1154. we've had.

  1155. It will

  1156. go on

  1157. when I

  1158. return.

  1159. So there's

  1160. so much

  1161. here that

  1162. the disciples

  1163. don't

  1164. understand,

  1165. that they

  1166. can't see

  1167. of the

  1168. future.

  1169. future.

  1170. But Jesus

  1171. gives them

  1172. a purpose

  1173. for his

  1174. leaving and

  1175. a promise

  1176. to trust

  1177. that will

  1178. carry them

  1179. through the

  1180. storm ahead

  1181. and that

  1182. will hold

  1183. them for

  1184. the rest

  1185. of their

  1186. lives.

  1187. God

  1188. will

  1189. do it.

  1190. What about

  1191. us today?

  1192. Even though

  1193. we live

  1194. 2,000 years

  1195. later,

  1196. even though

  1197. we haven't

  1198. been with

  1199. Jesus like

  1200. the disciples

  1201. have,

  1202. I hope you

  1203. know that

  1204. this purpose,

  1205. this promise

  1206. is for us

  1207. as well.

  1208. you know,

  1209. some days

  1210. when we

  1211. look out

  1212. at our

  1213. world,

  1214. or when

  1215. we read

  1216. what's going

  1217. on in

  1218. the news,

  1219. it's all

  1220. too easy

  1221. to become

  1222. anxious,

  1223. to become

  1224. troubled in

  1225. heart,

  1226. to get

  1227. unsettled.

  1228. But we

  1229. have not

  1230. been left

  1231. alone.

  1232. And we

  1233. have hope.

  1234. Jesus

  1235. has gone

  1236. away,

  1237. yes,

  1238. that he

  1239. has promised.

  1240. I will

  1241. come back

  1242. and I

  1243. will take

  1244. you to

  1245. be with

  1246. me.

  1247. And so

  1248. no matter

  1249. what goes

  1250. on in

  1251. our world,

  1252. we can

  1253. take hold

  1254. of these

  1255. words for

  1256. ourselves.

  1257. Do not

  1258. let your

  1259. hearts be

  1260. troubled.

  1261. Believe

  1262. in God.

  1263. Believe

  1264. also in

  1265. me.

  1266. I'm

  1267. coming

  1268. back for

  1269. you,

  1270. says

  1271. Jesus.

  1272. Amen.

  1273. Come,

  1274. Lord

  1275. Jesus.

  1276. Come.

  1277. Let's

  1278. pray.

  1279. Amen.

  1280. Lord,

  1281. this was a

  1282. long time

  1283. ago that

  1284. you said

  1285. these things.

  1286. And it's

  1287. hard for us

  1288. to be

  1289. patient.

  1290. But I

  1291. pray that

  1292. our faith

  1293. would not

  1294. waver or

  1295. fail.

  1296. I pray

  1297. that today

  1298. each one

  1299. of us

  1300. in our

  1301. moments of

  1302. testing and

  1303. trial,

  1304. in the

  1305. troubles that

  1306. come our

  1307. way,

  1308. I pray that

  1309. each one

  1310. of us

  1311. would find

  1312. peace

  1313. in you,

  1314. in your

  1315. promise

  1316. to be with

  1317. us and

  1318. to return

  1319. for us.

  1320. thank you

  1321. that we

  1322. do not

  1323. have to

  1324. go this

  1325. life alone

  1326. and that

  1327. we have

  1328. such

  1329. wonderful

  1330. hope to

  1331. look forward

  1332. to for

  1333. all eternity

  1334. with you.

  1335. May your

  1336. name be

  1337. glorified.

  1338. Amen.

  1339. Amen.
