  1. All right, well, as we open up the Word of God this morning, our message is kind of a part two

  2. to last Sunday's message. Last Sunday, we finally came to these words of Jesus that we find in John

    John 14:12

  3. chapter 14, verse 12. He said, very truly, I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I

  4. have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the

  5. Father. And so last Sunday, we acknowledged the plain sense of these words. They seem to say that

  6. whoever believes in Jesus will perform miracles like he did. And we acknowledge that this kind of

  7. makes us uncomfortable, many of us, because many of us who believe in Jesus have never performed a

  8. miracle. So we looked at various ways that Christians have tried to interpret these words.

  9. Generally, our Pentecostal brothers and sisters will point to this verse and say that performing

  10. miracles is something that every Christian can and should do, so long as we have the faith and believe.

  11. We can expect to perform miracles like Jesus did. And last Sunday, I pointed us to what Paul said

  12. in 1 Corinthians 12, verse 29, where he said, do all work miracles? Implied answer, no.

    1 Corinthians 12:29

  13. So most of us do not accept the Pentecostal interpretation. Then we considered how some have

  14. tried to define the works of Jesus very broadly, to include all sorts of things that Jesus did,

  15. not just the miracles. According to this view, Jesus is not saying that every believer will do miracles,

  16. but that every believer will do some kind of the works that Jesus has been doing. And for most of us,

  17. it turns out that that's the non-miraculous works of Jesus. And I suggested that defining works this way

  18. doesn't work, because Jesus has just appealed to his works in the verse before as the evidence that he is in

  19. the Father and that the Father is in him. It has to at least include his miracles. And in case there's

  20. any doubt about this, we could fast forward in the conversation this night of Jesus' betrayal,

  21. a little farther forward to John chapter 15, verse 24. And Jesus will say this later to his disciples.

    John 15:24

  22. He'll say, if I had not done among them, that's the people of the world, the works that no one else did,

  23. they would not be guilty of sin. As it is, they have seen, and yet they have hated both me and my Father.

  24. Notice how Jesus describes the works that he's been doing. He says that they are the works that no one

  25. else has been doing. The works no one else did. They're not just the works of compassion or service.

  26. they're not just the works of calling people to faith and to repent like John the Baptist did.

  27. They're the works that nobody else has been doing, that nobody else could do. The supernatural

  28. miracles brought about by the power of God. And of course, yes, the disciples did share in doing

  29. some of those works as Jesus gave them authority and power to do it.

  30. So, the works of Jesus must include his miracles. Those are the things that no one else has done

  31. in the lifetime of these people. And so, I suggested last Sunday that there's another way to understand

  32. this passage. And it goes like this. Very truly, I tell you here in the room with me this evening,

  33. Jesus speaking to his disciples, his apostles, whoever of you believes in me will do the works

  34. I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I'm going to the Father.

  35. I suggested that Jesus was not giving a timeless principle for every believer throughout the ages,

  36. but that Jesus was making a statement about what the 11 apostles there in the room could expect

  37. once he was gone. They could expect that if they believed in him, they too would do the works that

  38. Jesus had been doing. Supernaturally enabled miracles like Jesus did. And then we looked at one of those

  39. miracles in the book of Acts, the healing of the man who had been born lame at the gate called Beautiful.

  40. And I suggested that the book of Acts really tells the story of how these 11 men in the room with Jesus

  41. this night came to do the works that Jesus has been doing, just as he said they would. Now, all of this

  42. kind of raised some big questions. For starters, what did Jesus mean when he said that they would do even

  43. greater works than Jesus did? Last Sunday, I said we'd chat about that this Sunday, but after my

  44. sermon ballooned to over 45 minutes long, I decided to chop that section out completely and put it on a

  45. piece of paper on a handout that you can grab off the back table on your way out if that's of interest

  46. to you. My short answer is, I do not know. There are at least three possibilities, and I would guess that

  47. it probably has something to do with the fact that Jesus is going to the Father. It seems that this is

  48. going to bring about a change, a significant change in how this ministry will look for the apostles when

  49. he's gone, which brings us to these next two verses. Jesus says to the men in the room,

  50. These verses are ones that we often point to as our assurance that God will answer our prayers.

  51. But I wonder, have we been too quick to just take these words and apply them to ourselves?

  52. Have we considered where these words fit in the conversation that night? As I suggested last

  53. Sunday, Jesus is telling these 11 men in the room, the apostles, that if they believe in him,

  54. they will do the works that he has been doing. Miracles.

  55. Does he now change the subject completely to just prayer in general? Or is it possible that Jesus

  56. is still talking about the same thing? If you believe in me, you, my apostles, will do the works

  57. I have been doing. That's miracles. Because I am going to the Father, and here's how it will work.

  58. From then on, whatever you ask in my name, I will do it for you, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

  59. So often we just kind of take these two verses about prayer and just kind of rip them right off the page,

  60. and just that's all we look at. But there's a context here. There's a flow.

  61. If you just kind of read it all the way through in one go, do you hear that?

  62. Whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing,

  63. and they will do even greater things than these,

  64. because I am going to the Father, and I will do whatever you ask in my name,

  65. so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

  66. I want to suggest the possibility that what Jesus is saying here is that

  67. the disciples will do the works that Jesus has been doing,

  68. miracles, by asking in Jesus' name.

  69. Now, this might still be a promise of answered prayer that we can all claim,

  70. but before we get to that, we have to first consider what Jesus is saying

  71. to these 11 men sitting there in the room with him.

  72. It seems, from the context, that this promise of answered prayer

  73. has to do with them doing the works that Jesus has been doing.

  74. And maybe at this point we kind of need to take a step back

  75. and just consider this whole conversation between Jesus and his disciples

  76. on the night of his betrayal.

  77. They've just had the Last Supper.

  78. They're having this conversation.

  79. They're going to end up out at the Garden of Gethsemane this very night.

  80. And there are going to be lots of things that Jesus says to them

  81. that are basically timeless principles for every believer.

  82. For example, in the next chapter,

  83. Jesus will give this analogy of the vine and the branches.

  84. I am the vine.

  85. You are the branches.

  86. Remain in me.

  87. And this is basically a timeless principle for every believer.

  88. We need to remain in Christ.

  89. We need to stay connected to him.

  90. He is the vine.

  91. We are the branches.

  92. And we know this because John, later in his letter,

  93. will encourage all believers to do the same thing.

  94. In 1 John 2, verse 27,

    1 John 2:27

  95. he'll say,

  96. Remain in him.

  97. And there are lots of things like this that Jesus will say to the eleven this night

  98. that directly apply to us, just like this.

  99. He encourages them to love each other,

  100. to serve one another.

  101. All of these things are reiterated throughout the New Testament

  102. that all believers,

  103. that we should be doing this.

  104. We should be doing these things.

  105. But then we have to acknowledge in a few places in this conversation

  106. that there are some things Jesus said

  107. that are bound to these particular eleven men in the room with Jesus.

  108. For example,

  109. at the end of chapter 15,

  110. Jesus warns the disciples about what's coming,

  111. not for every believer,

  112. but just for them.

  113. He says,

  114. And you also must testify,

  115. for you have been with me from the beginning.

  116. All this I told you so that you will not fall away.

  117. They will put you out of the synagogue.

  118. In fact, the time is coming when anyone who kills you

  119. will think they're offering a service to God.

  120. These are obviously words for the eleven there that night

  121. and not for all of us.

  122. It's the eleven apostles who have been there with Jesus

  123. from the beginning of his ministry.

  124. And it's the eleven apostles

  125. who will be excommunicated,

  126. kicked out of the synagogues

  127. in the days ahead.

  128. So coming back to these words that we're looking at,

  129. John 14, 13,

  130. let's first think about what these words mean to the apostles,

  131. to the disciples there in the room with Jesus.

  132. Jesus says to them,

  133. And I will do whatever you ask in my name

  134. so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

  135. You may ask me for anything in my name

  136. and I will do it.

  137. You know, it kind of sounds like Jesus is giving them a blank check,

  138. doesn't it?

  139. Whatever you ask in my name,

  140. I will do.

  141. And that word whatever,

  142. I mean, that's a strong word.

  143. It's not just,

  144. well, the things that you ask in my name.

  145. No, it's whatever.

  146. In fact, the old King James translation

  147. even adds that extra oomph.

  148. What so ever you ask

  149. in my name,

  150. I will do it.

  151. So Jesus seems to be giving them a blank check,

  152. a special calling card,

  153. a special kind of mobile prayer plan.

  154. He's giving them the privilege

  155. of being able to call upon him

  156. to do anything

  157. and the assurance that he will do it.

  158. But the blank check

  159. has a few security features,

  160. we'll call them.

  161. It has a few safeguards

  162. that ensure that it will be used appropriately.

  163. They can write whatsoever they want

  164. in the blank of that check.

  165. But here's the catch.

  166. What they write has to be

  167. in the name of Jesus.

  168. And it has to be

  169. so that the Father

  170. may be glorified in the Son.

  171. I will do whatever you ask

  172. in my name,

  173. says Jesus,

  174. and so that

  175. the Father

  176. may be glorified

  177. in the Son.

  178. Those are the safeguards,

  179. like the security features.

  180. They have freedom

  181. to call upon Jesus

  182. to do things.

  183. In the context here,

  184. to do miracles.

  185. But what they ask,

  186. it has to be

  187. in Jesus' name.

  188. which means

  189. for the sake

  190. of the name

  191. of Jesus

  192. that they ask it.

  193. So, I mean,

  194. think about this.

  195. Is Peter going to be

  196. praying and asking

  197. for a new

  198. top-of-the-line

  199. yacht

  200. to go sailing

  201. with his buddies

  202. on the Sea of Galilee?

  203. Would that be

  204. for Jesus' sake

  205. or would that be

  206. for Peter's sake?

  207. It's almost like

  208. it's embedded

  209. in the SIM card

  210. of this mobile prayer plan.

  211. For it to work,

  212. they have to be asking

  213. for something

  214. that would further

  215. the name,

  216. the mission,

  217. the work,

  218. the purpose

  219. of Jesus.

  220. And they've had

  221. three years

  222. with Jesus

  223. to learn from him

  224. about what

  225. those kinds of things

  226. would be.

  227. So that's the first

  228. safeguard

  229. to this

  230. blank check

  231. being given

  232. to the apostles

  233. of Jesus.

  234. They can ask

  235. whatsoever,

  236. but they must ask

  237. in Jesus' name

  238. for the sake

  239. of Jesus' name.

  240. The second

  241. safeguard is this.

  242. Jesus

  243. tells them

  244. that he will do

  245. whatever they ask

  246. in his name

  247. so that the Father

  248. may be glorified

  249. in the Son.

  250. So Jesus

  251. is telling them

  252. the purpose

  253. of this blank check.

  254. Yeah,

  255. you can ask

  256. whatsoever,

  257. but the purpose

  258. of this,

  259. me granting

  260. this request,

  261. it's to bring glory

  262. to God,

  263. the Father.

  264. And for a moment

  265. we can just notice

  266. where Jesus

  267. fits into this

  268. whole discussion.

  269. Notice that it's

  270. Jesus,

  271. he's the one

  272. answering the prayers.

  273. Look at that

  274. verse 14.

  275. You may ask me

  276. for anything

  277. in my name

  278. and I will do it.

  279. So Jesus

  280. is deeply involved

  281. in this transaction.

  282. They ask

  283. in prayer

  284. and Jesus

  285. delivers

  286. the things

  287. asked for

  288. and glory

  289. comes to God

  290. as Jesus

  291. does this.

  292. So that's

  293. the second

  294. safeguard.

  295. They're being

  296. given this

  297. sacred

  298. and special

  299. gift

  300. to call on God

  301. to have

  302. Jesus

  303. himself

  304. grant

  305. whatsoever

  306. they ask.

  307. But whatsoever

  308. they ask

  309. will have to be

  310. something that

  311. brings glory

  312. to God.

  313. They'll not be

  314. able to ask

  315. for,

  316. you know,

  317. the ability

  318. to walk

  319. across water

  320. just because

  321. I'm feeling

  322. too lazy

  323. to walk

  324. around the

  325. lake.

  326. They won't be

  327. able to ask

  328. God to do

  329. a miracle

  330. just so that

  331. they can show

  332. people that

  333. I'm awesome,

  334. I've got

  335. special powers.

  336. they will

  337. not receive

  338. what they

  339. ask for

  340. if the

  341. things that

  342. they ask

  343. for are

  344. evil

  345. or sinful

  346. or if

  347. they're just

  348. asking to

  349. scratch the

  350. itch of

  351. their own

  352. greed

  353. or lust

  354. or covetousness

  355. or revenge.

  356. The answer

  357. will be no

  358. because those

  359. things don't

  360. bring glory

  361. to God

  362. and the

  363. whole purpose

  364. of this

  365. privilege

  366. that Jesus

  367. extends

  368. is to

  369. bring glory

  370. to God

  371. and so

  372. whatever they

  373. ask it's

  374. got to

  375. fit with

  376. that.

  377. So now

  378. we're going

  379. to go to

  380. the book

  381. of Acts

  382. and we're

  383. going to

  384. see how

  385. this unfolded

  386. in real

  387. history.

  388. If you have

  389. your Bible

  390. you can

  391. flip over

  392. to Acts

    Acts 3 chapter mention

  393. chapter 3

  394. and we did

  395. read this

  396. passage last

  397. Sunday

  398. but we're

  399. going to

  400. read it

  401. again

  402. because

  403. it tells

  404. the story

  405. of how

  406. Peter and

  407. John

  408. did this

  409. very thing.

  410. How

  411. Peter

  412. performed

  413. a miracle

  414. did one

  415. of the

  416. works

  417. that

  418. Jesus

  419. did

  420. and how

  421. he did

  422. it.

  423. Let me

  424. read this

  425. for you

  426. it won't

  427. be on the

  428. screen

  429. you'll just

  430. have to

  431. listen.

  432. One day

  433. Peter and

  434. John were

  435. going up

  436. to the

  437. temple

  438. at the

  439. time of

  440. prayer

  441. at 3

  442. in the

  443. afternoon.

  444. Now a

  445. man who

  446. was lame

  447. from

  448. birth

  449. was being

  450. carried

  451. to the

  452. temple

  453. gate

  454. called

  455. Beautiful

  456. where he

  457. was put

  458. every day

  459. to beg

  460. from those

  461. going into

  462. the temple

  463. courts.

  464. When he

  465. saw Peter

  466. and John

  467. about to

  468. enter he

  469. asked them

  470. for money.

  471. Peter

  472. looked

  473. straight at

  474. him

  475. as did

  476. John.

  477. Then Peter

  478. said look

  479. at us.

  480. So the

  481. man gave

  482. them his

  483. attention

  484. expecting to

  485. get something

  486. from them.

  487. Then Peter

  488. said silver

  489. or gold

  490. I do

  491. not have

  492. but what

  493. I do

  494. have

  495. I give

  496. you.

  497. In the

  498. name of

  499. Jesus

  500. Christ

  501. of

  502. Nazareth

  503. walk.

  504. Taking

  505. him by

  506. the right

  507. hand he

  508. helped

  509. him up

  510. and

  511. instantly

  512. the man's

  513. feet and

  514. ankles

  515. became

  516. strong.

  517. The man

  518. jumped to

  519. his feet

  520. and began

  521. to walk.

  522. Then he

  523. went with

  524. them into

  525. the temple

  526. courts

  527. walking

  528. and jumping

  529. and praising

  530. God.

  531. When all

  532. the people

  533. saw him

  534. walking

  535. and praising

  536. God they

  537. recognized him

  538. as the same

  539. man who

  540. used to sit

  541. begging at

  542. the temple

  543. gate called

  544. Beautiful and

  545. they were

  546. filled with

  547. wonder and

  548. amazement at

  549. what had

  550. happened to

  551. him.

  552. While the

  553. man held

  554. on to

  555. Peter and

  556. John all

  557. the people

  558. were astonished

  559. and came

  560. running to

  561. them in

  562. the place

  563. called

  564. Solomon's

  565. Colonnade.

  566. When Peter

  567. saw this he

  568. said to

  569. them fellow

  570. Israelites

  571. why does

  572. this surprise

  573. you?

  574. Why do

  575. you stare

  576. at us

  577. as if by

  578. our own

  579. power or

  580. godliness we

  581. had made

  582. this man

  583. walk?

  584. The God

  585. of Abraham

  586. Isaac and

  587. Jacob the

  588. God of our

  589. fathers has

  590. glorified his

  591. servant

  592. Jesus.

  593. You handed

  594. Jesus over to

  595. be killed

  596. and you

  597. disowned him

  598. before Pilate

  599. though he had

  600. decided to

  601. let him go.

  602. You disowned

  603. the holy

  604. and righteous

  605. one and

  606. asked that a

  607. murderer be

  608. released to

  609. you.

  610. You killed

  611. the author

  612. of life

  613. but God

  614. raised him

  615. from the

  616. dead.

  617. We are

  618. witnesses

  619. of this.

  620. By faith

  621. in the name

  622. of Jesus

  623. this man

  624. whom you see

  625. and know

  626. was made

  627. strong.

  628. It's Jesus

  629. name and

  630. faith that

  631. comes through

  632. him that

  633. has completely

  634. healed him

  635. as you

  636. can all

  637. see.

  638. I love

  639. this story.

  640. Peter

  641. one of the

  642. eleven

  643. apostles

  644. performs

  645. a miracle.

  646. He does

  647. one of the

  648. works that

  649. Jesus had

  650. been doing

  651. and notice

  652. how he does

  653. it.

  654. He calls

  655. on the

  656. name of

  657. Jesus

  658. to heal

  659. this lame

  660. man.

  661. He says

  662. in the

  663. name of

  664. Jesus

  665. Christ of

  666. Nazareth

  667. walk.

  668. And

  669. later on

  670. we didn't

  671. see this

  672. but Peter

  673. will tell

  674. the

  675. Sanhedrin

  676. the reason

  677. he did

  678. this was

  679. just as

  680. an act

  681. of kindness

  682. just like

  683. Jesus had

  684. done for

  685. so many

  686. people who

  687. he healed.

  688. Peter

  689. calls on

  690. the name

  691. of Jesus

  692. to heal

  693. this lame

  694. man and

  695. Jesus answers

  696. right on

  697. the spot

  698. by healing

  699. him.

  700. And what

  701. was the

  702. result?

  703. Did it

  704. bring glory

  705. to God?

  706. Well verse

  707. eight tells

  708. us that the

  709. man was

  710. praising God.

  711. he was

  712. glorifying

  713. God.

  714. And then

  715. when all

  716. the attention

  717. of all

  718. the witnesses

  719. came to

  720. Peter,

  721. what did

  722. Peter do?

  723. He said

  724. that it

  725. was God

  726. that did

  727. the miracle

  728. and he

  729. did it

  730. to glorify

  731. Jesus.

  732. Peter

  733. denied

  734. healing

  735. this man

  736. by his

  737. own

  738. power.

  739. He gave

  740. all the

  741. credit,

  742. all the

  743. glory

  744. to Jesus

  745. Christ

  746. of

  747. Nazareth.

  748. He

  749. proclaimed

  750. Christ

  751. to all

  752. the people

  753. there.

  754. that he

  755. was

  756. crucified,

  757. that he

  758. rose from

  759. the dead,

  760. that he

  761. was now

  762. in heaven,

  763. and that

  764. it's by

  765. his name

  766. which means

  767. his authority,

  768. his power,

  769. that this

  770. man stands

  771. before you

  772. healed,

  773. is what he

  774. preached to

  775. the Sanhedrin

  776. the next

  777. day.

  778. So this

  779. right here,

  780. it's an

  781. example of

  782. how John

    John 14:13

  783. chapter 14

  784. verse 13

  785. and 14

  786. was fulfilled.

  787. It's an

  788. example of

  789. the blank

  790. check

  791. that was

  792. given to

  793. the apostles,

  794. it's an

  795. example of

  796. it being

  797. cached,

  798. and glory

  799. coming to

  800. the Father

  801. and to

  802. the Son

  803. as a

  804. result.

  805. Now I've

  806. been kind of

  807. tiptoeing around

  808. this until

  809. now,

  810. but probably

  811. we're all

  812. still wondering,

  813. okay,

  814. so that's

  815. how Jesus

  816. answered the

  817. prayers of

  818. the apostles

  819. to do the

  820. miraculous works

  821. that they

  822. did in Acts,

  823. but what

  824. about my

  825. prayers?

  826. What about

  827. all of our

  828. prayers?

  829. I mean,

  830. 2,000 years

  831. later,

  832. is Jesus

  833. giving us

  834. assurance of

  835. answered prayer

  836. here?

  837. Or is that

  838. assurance just

  839. for the

  840. apostles,

  841. for the

  842. special work

  843. that they're

  844. doing?

  845. This is a

  846. really important

  847. question,

  848. and I want

  849. to start

  850. by saying

  851. this.

  852. I think

  853. that we

  854. would be

  855. wise to

  856. acknowledge

  857. that there

  858. is a

  859. difference

  860. between the

  861. apostles

  862. and the

  863. rest of

  864. us.

  865. Just as

  866. Paul said

  867. in 1 Corinthians

  868. 12,

  869. 29,

  870. he said,

  871. are all

  872. apostles?

  873. Implied

  874. answer,

  875. no.

  876. Notice how

  877. the apostle

  878. Peter,

  879. in the story

  880. we just

  881. heard,

  882. he called

  883. in the

  884. name of

  885. Jesus,

  886. and Jesus

  887. answered

  888. with a

  889. miracle

  890. right on

  891. the spot.

  892. God.

  893. The sense

  894. we get

  895. from that

  896. story,

  897. as well as

  898. other places

  899. in the

  900. New Testament,

  901. is that

  902. this kind

  903. of prayer

  904. for a

  905. miracle

  906. answer

  907. was normal

  908. for the

  909. apostles.

  910. They asked

  911. in the name

  912. of Jesus

  913. for the

  914. glory of

  915. God,

  916. and it

  917. seems

  918. Jesus just

  919. answered

  920. right away,

  921. right there

  922. on the

  923. spot.

  924. God.

  925. In fact,

  926. the ability

  927. to perform

  928. miracles

  929. was a

  930. mark of

  931. a true

  932. apostle.

  933. Paul said

  934. this in

  935. his letter

  936. to the

  937. Corinthians,

  938. 2 Corinthians

  939. 12.12.

  940. He said,

  941. I persevered

  942. in demonstrating

  943. among you

  944. the marks

  945. of a true

  946. apostle,

  947. including

  948. signs,

  949. wonders,

  950. and miracles.

  951. So there

  952. was a

  953. special

  954. privilege

  955. in prayer

  956. given to

  957. the apostles

  958. for the

  959. works that

  960. they had

  961. to do.

  962. But

  963. doing

  964. miracles

  965. is not

  966. the only

  967. thing

  968. that the

  969. apostles

  970. were urged

  971. to pray

  972. for.

  973. Later on

  974. in the

  975. evening,

  976. Jesus will

  977. be talking

  978. to his

  979. disciples

  980. about some

  981. other

  982. things,

  983. how they

  984. will weep

  985. when he's

  986. crucified,

  987. how they

  988. will rejoice

  989. when they

  990. see him

  991. again raised

  992. from the

  993. dead.

  994. He's

  995. comforting

  996. them,

  997. and he

  998. says this

  999. to them,

  1000. very

  1001. truly I

  1002. tell you,

  1003. my father

  1004. will give

  1005. you whatever

  1006. you ask

  1007. in my

  1008. name.

  1009. Ask,

  1010. and you

  1011. will receive,

  1012. and your

  1013. joy will

  1014. be complete.

  1015. Here,

  1016. Jesus isn't

  1017. talking about

  1018. asking for

  1019. miracles.

  1020. He just

  1021. seems to

  1022. give the

  1023. same sort

  1024. of blank

  1025. check and

  1026. the assurance

  1027. of answered

  1028. prayer in

  1029. general.

  1030. And for

  1031. what purpose?

  1032. So that

  1033. your joy

  1034. may be

  1035. complete.

  1036. So that

  1037. your happiness

  1038. will be

  1039. full.

  1040. We're so

  1041. used to

  1042. thinking about

  1043. how our

  1044. prayers need

  1045. to bring

  1046. glory to

  1047. God and

  1048. what we

  1049. ask for,

  1050. but actually

  1051. they're also

  1052. so that we

  1053. can have

  1054. joy in

  1055. God.

  1056. As we

  1057. read carefully

  1058. through all

  1059. the passages

  1060. about prayer

  1061. in the New

  1062. Testament,

  1063. it becomes

  1064. clear that

  1065. we,

  1066. all of us

  1067. who are

  1068. not

  1069. apostles,

  1070. actually have

  1071. the same

  1072. kind of

  1073. assurance that

  1074. Jesus gave

  1075. to the

  1076. eleven that

  1077. night,

  1078. that yes,

  1079. Jesus will

  1080. answer and

  1081. grant our

  1082. requests,

  1083. whatever we

  1084. ask,

  1085. so long as

  1086. we ask with

  1087. those few

  1088. safeguards in

  1089. mind,

  1090. so long as

  1091. we ask for

  1092. the sake of

  1093. Jesus' name

  1094. and for the

  1095. glory of

  1096. God,

  1097. so long as

  1098. we ask

  1099. according

  1100. to what

  1101. God

  1102. wills,

  1103. 1 John

  1104. 5,

  1105. 14,

  1106. so long as

  1107. we're living

  1108. in obedience

  1109. to God's

  1110. commands and

  1111. doing the

  1112. things that

  1113. please him,

  1114. 1 John

  1115. 3,

  1116. 22,

  1117. we can

  1118. ask for

  1119. whatever

  1120. and the

  1121. answer is

  1122. yes.

  1123. Remember

  1124. what Jesus

  1125. taught not

  1126. just the

  1127. apostles but

  1128. the crowds,

  1129. like everybody,

  1130. he told

  1131. them,

  1132. ask and it

  1133. will be given

  1134. to you,

  1135. seek and you

  1136. will find,

  1137. knock and

  1138. the door

  1139. will be

  1140. open to

  1141. you.

  1142. He

  1143. encouraged us

  1144. not to

  1145. think of

  1146. God as

  1147. stingy and

  1148. begrudging,

  1149. but as our

  1150. loving heavenly

  1151. father who

  1152. delights to

  1153. give us

  1154. good gifts

  1155. like a

  1156. father does

  1157. his children.

  1158. He taught

  1159. all his

  1160. disciples to

  1161. pray,

  1162. to seek the

  1163. glory of

  1164. God,

  1165. hallowed be

  1166. thy name.

  1167. He taught

  1168. all of his

  1169. disciples to

  1170. ask for the

  1171. things that

  1172. they need

  1173. each day.

  1174. Give us

  1175. this day

  1176. our daily

  1177. bread.

  1178. And as the

  1179. church grew

  1180. and spread

  1181. over the

  1182. world,

  1183. the apostles

  1184. were there,

  1185. they were

  1186. teaching,

  1187. they were

  1188. encouraging

  1189. believers

  1190. everywhere to

  1191. pray for the

  1192. same things

  1193. with that

  1194. same sort

  1195. of assurance.

  1196. Pray

  1197. continually,

  1198. said Paul.

  1199. He said,

  1200. I encourage

  1201. the men in

  1202. the church

  1203. to lift up

  1204. holy hands

  1205. in prayer.

  1206. Paul urged

  1207. the people

  1208. in Timothy's

  1209. church to

  1210. make requests,

  1211. make prayers,

  1212. all kinds of

  1213. petitions to

  1214. God for

  1215. everybody.

  1216. James encouraged

  1217. believers,

  1218. if you lack

  1219. wisdom,

  1220. ask God.

  1221. And if you

  1222. ask believing,

  1223. he'll give it

  1224. to you

  1225. generously.

  1226. Also in

  1227. James,

  1228. is any of you

  1229. in trouble?

  1230. Let him

  1231. pray,

  1232. said James.

  1233. and one

  1234. of my

  1235. favorites,

  1236. 1 John 3

  1237. 22.

  1238. Dear friends,

  1239. if our hearts

  1240. do not

  1241. condemn us,

  1242. we have

  1243. confidence

  1244. before God

  1245. and receive

  1246. from him

  1247. anything we

  1248. ask,

  1249. because we

  1250. keep his

  1251. commands and

  1252. do what

  1253. pleases him.

  1254. As I skim

  1255. through the

  1256. New Testament

  1257. again this

  1258. week,

  1259. I was just

  1260. kind of blown

  1261. away by

  1262. how many

  1263. times we

  1264. are all

  1265. urged to

  1266. pray,

  1267. to ask

  1268. God for

  1269. things.

  1270. And so,

  1271. I want to

  1272. tell you this

  1273. morning that

  1274. prayer is not

  1275. just the

  1276. privilege of

  1277. the apostles

  1278. only.

  1279. It's the

  1280. privilege of

  1281. every believer,

  1282. all who

  1283. belong to

  1284. Jesus.

  1285. Now that

  1286. said,

  1287. the answers

  1288. to our

  1289. prayers might

  1290. not always

  1291. be on the

  1292. spot,

  1293. right away,

  1294. where it

  1295. seems like

  1296. the apostles,

  1297. it was,

  1298. as they did

  1299. the miracles,

  1300. as they did

  1301. the works

  1302. God gave

  1303. them to

  1304. do.

  1305. And I'll

  1306. say too

  1307. that we

  1308. shouldn't

  1309. try to

  1310. take

  1311. Jesus'

  1312. assurance,

  1313. this promise

  1314. to answer

  1315. our prayers,

  1316. to do

  1317. whatever we

  1318. ask,

  1319. and turn

  1320. it into

  1321. a formula.

  1322. There is a

  1323. bit of a

  1324. temptation to

  1325. do that,

  1326. but God

  1327. is not a

  1328. vending

  1329. machine.

  1330. There are

  1331. times when

  1332. God's

  1333. answer is

  1334. yes,

  1335. but not

  1336. yet.

  1337. The timing

  1338. is not

  1339. right.

  1340. Or yes,

  1341. that is

  1342. my will,

  1343. but not

  1344. in this

  1345. way.

  1346. I have

  1347. something

  1348. even

  1349. better

  1350. in store.

  1351. And so

  1352. we need to

  1353. keep those

  1354. things in

  1355. mind as

  1356. we seek

  1357. to trust

  1358. this promise

  1359. of Jesus

  1360. to answer

  1361. our prayers

  1362. and to

  1363. give us

  1364. the things

  1365. we ask

  1366. for.

  1367. So I

  1368. want to

  1369. just end

  1370. by encouraging

  1371. each one

  1372. of you,

  1373. just as I

  1374. was encouraged

  1375. this week,

  1376. it can be

  1377. so easy

  1378. to slip

  1379. into despair

  1380. over the

  1381. things that

  1382. happen to

  1383. us in our

  1384. lives,

  1385. or as we

  1386. look out

  1387. into our

  1388. world,

  1389. to slip

  1390. into despair.

  1391. God

  1392. and to

  1393. his son,

  1394. Jesus.

  1395. Ask

  1396. and it

  1397. will be

  1398. given to

  1399. you.

  1400. Seek

  1401. and you

  1402. will find.

  1403. Knock

  1404. and the

  1405. door will

  1406. be opened

  1407. to you.

  1408. For

  1409. everyone who

  1410. asks

  1411. receives,

  1412. the one

  1413. who seeks

  1414. finds,

  1415. and to

  1416. the one

  1417. who knocks,

  1418. the door

  1419. will be

  1420. opened.

  1421. Let's

  1422. pray.

  1423. Father in

  1424. heaven,

  1425. thank you

  1426. so much

  1427. for this

  1428. wide open

  1429. invitation

  1430. to pray

  1431. and for

  1432. the reminder

  1433. that you

  1434. are there

  1435. listening,

  1436. taking

  1437. everything

  1438. that we

  1439. ask for

  1440. and say

  1441. to heart,

  1442. and we

  1443. thank you

  1444. that you

  1445. are a

  1446. loving

  1447. heavenly

  1448. father

  1449. and that

  1450. your

  1451. answer

  1452. to us

  1453. is yes

  1454. when we

  1455. ask in

  1456. the ways

  1457. that you

  1458. have told

  1459. us to.

  1460. I pray

  1461. that we

  1462. would.

  1463. Each person

  1464. here,

  1465. I pray

  1466. that we

  1467. would ask

  1468. you for

  1469. things,

  1470. that we

  1471. wouldn't

  1472. try to

  1473. just do

  1474. this life

  1475. all by

  1476. ourselves,

  1477. on our

  1478. own.

  1479. There are

  1480. troubles in

  1481. this life,

  1482. in this

  1483. world,

  1484. and you

  1485. have

  1486. resources

  1487. for us.

  1488. You have

  1489. things for

  1490. us to

  1491. help us

  1492. through.

  1493. And so I

  1494. pray that we

  1495. would ask

  1496. for the

  1497. glory of

  1498. your son.

  1499. Amen.
