  1. Well, as we come to the Word of God this morning, we're continuing on in the Gospel of John.

  2. For those of you who haven't been here, we've been working through this account of the story of Jesus.

  3. And it's been a few years, I think, now.

  4. We're still working our way through.

  5. Today we're going to pick up the pace just a little bit,

  6. and we're going to hear Jesus touch on a number of things.

  7. We're in John 14, verse 15.

    John 14:15

  8. John 14, verse 15.

    John 14:15

  9. This is the night of Jesus' betrayal and arrest.

  10. And He's kind of having this last conversation with His disciples and giving them comfort and encouragement.

  11. This is what He says to them.

  12. If you love Me, keep My commands.

  13. And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another advocate to help you.

  14. And to be with you forever.

  15. The Spirit of Truth.

  16. The world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him.

  17. But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you.

  18. I will not leave you as orphans.

  19. I will come to you.

  20. Before long, the world will not see Me anymore.

  21. But you will see Me.

  22. Because I live, you also will live.

  23. On that day, you will realize that I am in My Father,

  24. and you are in Me, and I am in you.

  25. Whoever has My commands and keeps them is the one who loves Me.

  26. The one who loves Me will be loved by My Father.

  27. And I too will love them and show Myself to them.

  28. Then Judas, not Judas Iscariot, said,

  29. But Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?

  30. Jesus replied,

  31. Anyone who loves Me will obey My teaching.

  32. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.

  33. Anyone who does not love Me will not obey My teaching.

  34. These words you hear are not My own.

  35. They belong to the Father who sent Me.

  36. Well, there's a lot of things in this section of the conversation that Jesus has with the disciples that night.

  37. I counted at least eight.

  38. There could be more.

  39. We'll just run over them really fast.

  40. First of all, Jesus urges His disciples to keep His commands.

  41. Second, He talks about the Spirit of Truth who is coming.

  42. Third, He talks more about His leaving and returning and gives assurance that He's coming back.

  43. Four, He talks about how the disciples will live because Jesus lives.

  44. Five, He talks about a moment of clear understanding.

  45. There's going to be this moment in which the disciples realize that Jesus is indeed in the Father.

  46. And along with that, a moment in which they understand that Jesus is in them, and they are in Him.

  47. Seven, Jesus talks about how He and God will love the disciples and come to them and live with them.

  48. And then finally, Jesus reminds them that the words that He is speaking to them are not His own,

  49. but that they are the words of God, the Father Himself, the One who sent Him.

  50. So, lots in here.

  51. Eight things.

  52. All of them are important.

  53. All of them are worth taking time to reflect on, but we couldn't possibly fully linger over each one this morning.

  54. So, we're just going to focus on the one that seems to hold them all together, number three.

  55. And then we'll look at the one that Jesus emphasizes the most on this evening with His disciples.

  56. So, Jesus talks some more about His leaving and His returning.

  57. And He gives assurance to His disciples that He is coming back for them.

  58. This is something that we heard a little bit about already.

  59. It's how the chapter started.

  60. If you were here, the disciples are worried.

  61. They're anxious.

  62. Why?

  63. Well, Jesus has just told them that He's about to leave them.

  64. And where He's going, He says,

  65. You can't come with me.

  66. Once again, imagine yourself in the room with the disciples as Jesus says this to you.

  67. Jesus has done many wonderful things over the past three years.

  68. But He has also stirred up a hornet's nest of opposition.

  69. And things are about to get ugly and violent.

  70. So, we imagine for the disciples that this is not what they want to hear.

  71. You're leaving us?

  72. You're going away?

  73. Like, all by ourselves?

  74. What are we going to do?

  75. Well, what Jesus says here in verse 18 is powerful.

  76. He says,

  77. I will not leave you as orphans.

  78. I will come to you.

  79. Jesus speaks to the fear in their hearts.

  80. What are they worried about?

  81. They're worried that Jesus is about to abandon them.

  82. They're worried that they're going to have to find their way on their own,

  83. all by themselves,

  84. like a child that has been left by His parents.

  85. And Jesus says,

  86. Listen, I'm not about to do that to you.

  87. No way.

  88. I'm not just going to abandon you like that.

  89. I will not leave you as orphans.

  90. No.

  91. No.

  92. I will come to you.

  93. I am coming back.

  94. And in the meantime,

  95. it will seem to the world as if I'm gone.

  96. The world won't see me anymore.

  97. But you will see me.

  98. In the meantime, while I'm gone,

  99. I will ask my Father,

  100. and He will give you the Spirit of Truth.

  101. And He will be with you.

  102. He will be like I have been to you.

  103. He will be a counselor.

  104. He will guide you.

  105. He will lead you.

  106. He will help you.

  107. He will be with you.

  108. And Jesus says,

  109. He will be in you.

  110. To stay.

  111. In my absence,

  112. He will be there.

  113. And when that day comes,

  114. you will know,

  115. you will realize that I have not abandoned you.

  116. No.

  117. You will see me.

  118. Though the world does not see me,

  119. you will.

  120. And you will realize

  121. that even though I'm apart from you in body,

  122. I am with you.

  123. And I am in you

  124. by my Spirit.

  125. And you are in me.

  126. These are awesome words of comfort

  127. and encouragement.

  128. You know,

  129. sometimes it's hard

  130. when we look out at the world.

  131. What do we see?

  132. We see like the world sees.

  133. We see the absence of Jesus.

  134. We see things going on.

  135. And it's not like the story

  136. that we read about when Jesus was here.

  137. And sometimes doubt creeps in.

  138. And we wonder,

  139. will things ever be like they were

  140. when He was here again?

  141. It's been so long

  142. since Jesus walked the earth

  143. shoulder to shoulder with us.

  144. Where is He?

  145. When is He going to come back?

  146. When will you show yourself to the world?

  147. As Judas asked.

  148. We may even wrestle with deeper doubts.

  149. What if He never really came at all?

  150. Or what if all this that I've believed,

  151. what if it's just some elaborate hoax

  152. or a conspiracy theory?

  153. It's here in this place of doubt

  154. and even despair

  155. that Jesus' words just shine

  156. like a glorious ray of light

  157. into the darkness.

  158. I will not leave you as orphans.

  159. I will come to you.

  160. I'm coming back.

  161. There will be a day

  162. when we will no longer see

  163. the absence of Jesus.

  164. A day when Jesus returns

  165. in personal flesh,

  166. bodily,

  167. and everything that we've had to believe,

  168. everything that we have accepted by faith,

  169. will be plain and undeniable

  170. before every eye in the world.

  171. His return will be visible to every eye.

  172. But for now,

  173. like the disciples,

  174. we must walk by faith.

  175. We must see Jesus with eyes of faith

  176. while the world does not see Him.

  177. We must learn to accept this guidance

  178. of this other counselor,

  179. the Spirit of Truth,

  180. an invisible,

  181. intangible Spirit

  182. that the world can't see

  183. or know

  184. or detect.

  185. But Jesus says

  186. He will be in you.

  187. He will be in you

  188. and I will be in you,

  189. says Jesus.

  190. These are awesome words of comfort,

  191. not just for the disciples

  192. in their days of doubt

  193. and darkness,

  194. but for us as well.

  195. And in the midst of these words,

  196. Jesus says one thing

  197. three times.

  198. Verse 15,

  199. If you love me,

  200. you will keep my commands.

  201. Verse 21,

  202. Whoever has my commands

  203. and keeps them

  204. is the one who loves me.

  205. And verse 23,

  206. Anyone who loves me

  207. will obey my teaching

  208. or literally

  209. will keep my word.

  210. This must be important.

  211. I mean,

  212. Jesus says it three times.

  213. I mean,

  214. think about this.

  215. You're going away on a trip

  216. and you're leaving

  217. the care of your house

  218. to somebody else

  219. and you're doing the walkthrough

  220. before you go.

  221. You're giving them

  222. the instructions

  223. and that one thing

  224. that is the most important,

  225. that if they do nothing else,

  226. you tell them about it

  227. at the beginning.

  228. You tell them about it

  229. in the middle

  230. as you're giving

  231. your instructions

  232. and you remind them

  233. about it one more time

  234. at the end.

  235. This is so important.

  236. Don't miss this.

  237. Well,

  238. Jesus does the same

  239. sort of thing here.

  240. Three times he tells them,

  241. If you love me,

  242. you will keep my commands

  243. or something very similar.

  244. So these are words

  245. that we can't just hurry past.

  246. We got to sit

  247. and reflect

  248. for a few minutes

  249. on what Jesus is saying.

  250. If you love me,

  251. you will keep my commands.

  252. Let's start by talking

  253. about that word commands.

  254. Let's maybe see

  255. a show of hands.

  256. Is there anybody here

  257. that loves to be commanded

  258. to do things?

  259. Nobody?

  260. Well,

  261. the Apostle Paul

  262. seemed to suggest

  263. in his letter

  264. to the church at Rome

  265. that there's a reason

  266. for that.

  267. All of us have sin in us.

  268. We're born with sin

  269. and because of that

  270. we just have this tendency

  271. to rebel.

  272. From birth,

  273. our natural bent

  274. is that when we're commanded

  275. to do something,

  276. we grumble about it,

  277. we complain about it,

  278. and we even rebel against it.

  279. We don't like being told

  280. what to do.

  281. We want to do

  282. what we want to do.

  283. And so this word command,

  284. I don't know about you,

  285. but maybe it sets you

  286. on edge a little bit.

  287. And then it kind of

  288. strikes us oddly,

  289. doesn't it,

  290. that in the same breath

  291. as Jesus speaks about

  292. commanding us,

  293. he speaks about love.

  294. Like what?

  295. How can these two things

  296. be together?

  297. What a strange thing.

  298. We don't love being commanded

  299. and we don't like to mix

  300. love and duty.

  301. Friendship and obligation

  302. or expectations.

  303. And so these words of Jesus,

  304. they just have a way

  305. of jumbling up our emotions

  306. even as we come to them,

  307. even as we hear them

  308. we got to get past that though

  309. if we really want to consider

  310. what Jesus is saying.

  311. This word commands,

  312. it makes us think

  313. about the kind of relationship

  314. that Jesus has

  315. with the men around the table.

  316. Theirs is the kind of relationship

  317. where Jesus commands them

  318. to do things,

  319. not suggests,

  320. not encourages,

  321. not instructs them,

  322. he commands them

  323. to do things.

  324. So I mean like

  325. what kind of relationship

  326. is this between Jesus

  327. and his disciples?

  328. Well, it's not just a friendship,

  329. there's not commanding

  330. in friendships.

  331. I mean they have a friendship.

  332. It's not just camaraderie,

  333. they have that too.

  334. It's not just coworkers,

  335. they've been working

  336. on all kinds of things together.

  337. It's not that Jesus

  338. is their employer.

  339. They're not getting paid a cent

  340. to do any of this.

  341. They're following Jesus

  342. around of their own free will.

  343. And Jesus is not

  344. their military officer

  345. or their commander.

  346. This is not an army.

  347. So who is Jesus

  348. that he commands them

  349. and they must obey?

  350. Well, there's more than one

  351. right answer to that question,

  352. but I'm only going to highlight one.

  353. who is Jesus?

  354. He is their king.

  355. He's the Messiah.

  356. Messiah, Christ.

  357. It means anointed one.

  358. It points us back

  359. to the prophet Samuel

  360. who God sent to pour oil

  361. on the head of King David

  362. to show that yes,

  363. this is my chosen king

  364. who will rule over my people Israel.

  365. and kings command.

  366. They give orders.

  367. They have authority.

  368. And it's funny, you know,

  369. Jesus, I mean,

  370. he doesn't in any way

  371. minimize the fact

  372. that he has this kind

  373. of authority over them.

  374. He just speaks as if it's normal.

  375. If you love me,

  376. you will keep my commands.

  377. I've given you commands,

  378. not suggestions,

  379. not encouragements,

  380. not instructions

  381. that are optional commands.

  382. Jesus commands his followers,

  383. the disciples,

  384. by extension, us,

  385. but he has the right to.

  386. He's the Messiah.

  387. He's the king of Israel

  388. and for all God's people.

  389. So he has authority.

  390. And as I was thinking about this,

  391. you know,

  392. we really need to let this word

  393. commands work on us.

  394. Yes,

  395. Jesus gives his followers

  396. orders,

  397. commands

  398. to do things,

  399. to not do things.

  400. And it's not because

  401. he's domineering

  402. or controlling.

  403. He has every right

  404. to command us

  405. just because of who he is.

  406. He's here to give us

  407. God's commands for us.

  408. He serves God

  409. as our king.

  410. And this should really

  411. change the way

  412. that we think

  413. about all that Jesus said

  414. and taught.

  415. If you're a follower of Jesus,

  416. if you believe in his name,

  417. if you believe

  418. that he is the Messiah,

  419. just like the men

  420. around the table,

  421. the disciples,

  422. you too

  423. are obligated

  424. to obey

  425. his commands.

  426. He is the king.

  427. That's the kind

  428. of relationship

  429. Jesus has

  430. with his followers.

  431. He gives commands

  432. and we are to obey them.

  433. But now let's consider

  434. where love

  435. enters into this.

  436. Three times

  437. Jesus

  438. makes it clear

  439. that love

  440. is somehow

  441. a part of this.

  442. In verse 15

  443. he says,

  444. if you love me,

  445. you will keep

  446. my commands.

  447. In verse 21,

  448. whoever has

  449. my commands

  450. and keeps them

  451. is the one

  452. who loves me.

  453. In verse 23,

  454. again,

  455. anyone who loves me

  456. will obey

  457. my teaching.

  458. What does love

  459. have to do

  460. with obedience

  461. to a commanding king?

  462. well,

  463. first,

  464. Jesus says

  465. that our love

  466. for him

  467. should be the basis

  468. of our obedience.

  469. It's the foundation

  470. for our obedience

  471. to his commands.

  472. If you love me,

  473. you will do this.

  474. You will do the things

  475. I have commanded.

  476. Now,

  477. this might be hard

  478. for us to accept

  479. or it might,

  480. in some of our hearts,

  481. it might just rub us

  482. the wrong way.

  483. Maybe your mind

  484. goes to some

  485. unhealthy relationship

  486. that you've been

  487. a part of

  488. or that you've seen.

  489. Maybe you think

  490. of somebody

  491. who's tried

  492. to manipulate you

  493. or who's tried

  494. to coerce you

  495. into doing something

  496. that you didn't

  497. want to do

  498. and maybe said

  499. something similar

  500. to this.

  501. If you love me,

  502. you'll do what I say.

  503. Perhaps the first

  504. thing we need

  505. to do here

  506. is to remember

  507. that Jesus

  508. is not like

  509. the manipulators

  510. that we have

  511. known and seen.

  512. He is the perfect

  513. son of God.

  514. He has come

  515. to command us

  516. to do the things

  517. that God

  518. commands us to do

  519. and wants us to do.

  520. And God has the right.

  521. He has that place.

  522. I mean,

  523. he's God.

  524. He made us.

  525. We belong to him.

  526. Not only that,

  527. but he's good.

  528. He's glorious.

  529. He's worthy

  530. of not just our praise

  531. and our worship,

  532. but also our obedience.

  533. And then the Bible

  534. goes even further

  535. and tells us

  536. that the way

  537. that God loves us

  538. is such that

  539. he gives us commands

  540. not just because

  541. he can or wants to,

  542. but for our benefit,

  543. for our good,

  544. because that is

  545. what leads to

  546. the happy,

  547. the joyful,

  548. the prosperous life

  549. that he wants

  550. us to have.

  551. So no,

  552. Jesus is not

  553. trying to manipulate

  554. or coerce us

  555. into some kind of

  556. sick or twisted

  557. subservience.

  558. Rather,

  559. Jesus is showing us

  560. what a good

  561. and healthy relationship

  562. looks like

  563. between king

  564. and citizens

  565. of the kingdom,

  566. between God

  567. and his people.

  568. It looks like this.

  569. we obey

  570. his commands

  571. and we do it

  572. because we love him.

  573. Our obedience flows

  574. out of our love

  575. for the king.

  576. The best picture

  577. I can think of this,

  578. I hope that you guys

  579. have seen

  580. or read this,

  581. but

  582. maybe you've

  583. watched

  584. the Lord of the Rings,

  585. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings,

  586. or read the book.

  587. There's a

  588. vile and self-interested

  589. steward

  590. in that story,

  591. a steward of the

  592. kingdom of Gondor.

  593. And everything about

  594. the way he governs

  595. just makes you feel

  596. sick.

  597. It's all about him.

  598. That's all he cares about.

  599. But then there is

  600. Aragorn,

  601. the rightful heir

  602. to the throne

  603. of Gondor.

  604. And everything about him

  605. is noble.

  606. He's humble.

  607. He's gentle.

  608. He's kind.

  609. He's wise.

  610. He's courageous.

  611. He brings out

  612. the best in others.

  613. He leads through

  614. love

  615. and service.

  616. Wherever Aragorn

  617. goes in the story,

  618. he helps the afflicted.

  619. He protects

  620. the weak.

  621. He puts his life

  622. on the line

  623. for others.

  624. And he does all this

  625. without a throne

  626. before he even

  627. becomes king.

  628. And so all throughout

  629. the story,

  630. we kind of watch

  631. as all the good

  632. characters in the story

  633. become increasingly

  634. more and more happy

  635. to pledge their

  636. allegiance

  637. to this man,

  638. to this king.

  639. They want him

  640. to be king

  641. because of how

  642. good he is.

  643. It's an honor

  644. to serve him,

  645. to be commanded

  646. by him.

  647. He is worthy

  648. of the throne.

  649. He's the kind of

  650. leader and authority

  651. that we want,

  652. that we need.

  653. And it's under

  654. his governance

  655. and command

  656. that we will all

  657. flourish and prosper

  658. and have the freedom

  659. that we long for

  660. and be protected

  661. from the enemy.

  662. It's a great picture

  663. of how it is

  664. with Jesus.

  665. Our obedience

  666. should flow

  667. out of our love

  668. for him.

  669. We obey his commands

  670. because we love him,

  671. because he is

  672. that kind of

  673. good king

  674. that we want

  675. and need.

  676. Everything about him

  677. is wonderful.

  678. He's good.

  679. He's gracious.

  680. He's humble.

  681. He's kind.

  682. He's wise.

  683. Courageous.

  684. He laid down

  685. his life

  686. for us.

  687. It's an honor

  688. to serve the king,

  689. to be commanded

  690. by this king.

  691. Well,

  692. now is the place

  693. where we should

  694. really pause

  695. and think about

  696. our love for Jesus.

  697. Jesus says,

  698. if you love me,

  699. an if statement,

  700. it kind of forces us

  701. to that question.

  702. Do I love Jesus?

  703. Do you love Jesus?

  704. And as we reflect

  705. on that,

  706. maybe we're thinking,

  707. well,

  708. what does that even mean?

  709. What does it mean

  710. to love Jesus?

  711. What kind of love

  712. are we talking about here?

  713. Maybe like just the feeling?

  714. How does that work?

  715. If you feel love

  716. towards me,

  717. you will obey

  718. my commands?

  719. I don't think

  720. that really fits.

  721. Love is a feeling,

  722. but as most of us

  723. have learned by now,

  724. feelings are pretty fickle.

  725. They come and they go.

  726. They're affected

  727. by all sorts of things,

  728. by how much sleep

  729. we got last night,

  730. or by when the last time

  731. we ate was,

  732. or by what the weather

  733. looks like outside.

  734. It's wonderful

  735. when we feel love

  736. towards someone

  737. or something.

  738. We want to feel that

  739. all the time

  740. towards Jesus,

  741. towards the members

  742. of our family,

  743. right?

  744. But I think we all know

  745. that really loving

  746. a person,

  747. it's more than

  748. just a feeling.

  749. It has to do

  750. with how we treat them,

  751. sometimes

  752. despite how we feel

  753. towards them.

  754. love.

  755. This gets to that

  756. other side of love,

  757. that deeper element

  758. to love.

  759. It has to do with

  760. our care

  761. and concern

  762. for others.

  763. It has to do

  764. with how we treat them,

  765. not just how we feel

  766. about them.

  767. And family relationships

  768. are the place

  769. where we get

  770. lots of opportunity

  771. to see love

  772. in action.

  773. here we see

  774. that commitment

  775. side of love,

  776. that loyalty

  777. side of love,

  778. that I'm going to be

  779. there

  780. and care for you

  781. and support you

  782. in sickness

  783. and in health,

  784. for better

  785. or for worse.

  786. Love is not

  787. just a feeling.

  788. There are times

  789. when love

  790. is a choice.

  791. it's in action.

  792. It's that deeper

  793. attitude

  794. towards others.

  795. So now,

  796. take this deeper

  797. truth about love

  798. and hear these

  799. words of Jesus

  800. again.

  801. If you love me,

  802. you will keep

  803. my commands.

  804. Jesus is not

  805. promising that

  806. obeying him

  807. will always

  808. feel easy

  809. or that we'll

  810. always like

  811. to do it

  812. or love

  813. to do it.

  814. In fact,

  815. there are many

  816. times when we

  817. must just

  818. simply choose.

  819. to obey,

  820. to do the thing

  821. Jesus has commanded

  822. because we love

  823. him

  824. despite how

  825. we're feeling.

  826. I was reading

  827. through the Psalms

  828. this week

  829. and here's a prayer

  830. of David

  831. in Psalm 141

    Psalms 141:4

  832. verse 4.

  833. He prays to God

  834. and says,

  835. do not let my heart

  836. be drawn

  837. to what is evil

  838. so that I take part

  839. in wicked deeds

  840. along with those

  841. who are evildoers.

  842. Now,

  843. why would you

  844. pray a prayer

  845. like that?

  846. Why would you

  847. ask something

  848. like that

  849. unless you

  850. feel that pull

  851. in your heart

  852. towards the

  853. things that

  854. are evil?

  855. There are times

  856. when we must

  857. choose to obey

  858. Jesus,

  859. to do what he

  860. commanded

  861. because we love

  862. him

  863. even though we

  864. don't feel like

  865. it.

  866. Let's look down

  867. a little bit

  868. to verse 21.

  869. Jesus says there,

  870. whoever has

  871. my commands

  872. and keeps them

  873. is the one

  874. who loves me.

  875. It's said maybe

  876. a little bit

  877. differently.

  878. Literally,

  879. the one having

  880. my commands

  881. and keeping them,

  882. that one

  883. is the one

  884. who loves me.

  885. another truth

  886. emerges here.

  887. Obedience

  888. to Jesus'

  889. commands

  890. is the mark

  891. of the person

  892. who truly

  893. loves Jesus.

  894. There is a

  895. visible

  896. and obvious

  897. indicator of

  898. whether a person

  899. really loves

  900. Jesus.

  901. Do they keep

  902. the commands

  903. of Jesus?

  904. Now we're

  905. being asked

  906. a different

  907. question.

  908. Not do I

  909. love,

  910. but am I

  911. actually obeying

  912. the commands

  913. that Jesus

  914. gave?

  915. We look down

  916. to verse 23

  917. now.

  918. This is the

  919. last time

  920. he says it.

  921. Whoever has

  922. my commands

  923. and keeps

  924. them.

  925. No,

  926. sorry,

  927. there it is.

  928. Anyone who

  929. loves me

  930. will obey

  931. my teaching,

  932. literally,

  933. will keep

  934. my word.

  935. My father

  936. will love

  937. him and

  938. we will

  939. come to

  940. him and

  941. make our

  942. home with

  943. him.

  944. This is a

  945. wonderful

  946. promise.

  947. There is

  948. and there

  949. will be

  950. more to

  951. this relationship

  952. than just

  953. our loving

  954. Jesus and

  955. our obeying

  956. his commands.

  957. love will

  958. flow both

  959. ways.

  960. Our love

  961. flows to

  962. Jesus as

  963. we obey

  964. him and

  965. it flows

  966. from the

  967. father,

  968. from God

  969. to us

  970. as we

  971. obey him.

  972. My father

  973. will love

  974. the person

  975. who loves

  976. me and

  977. keeps my

  978. word.

  979. This is

  980. perhaps a

  981. special love.

  982. I mean,

  983. it seems that

  984. God has

  985. loved everyone

  986. even just

  987. by sending

  988. Jesus in

  989. the first

  990. place.

  991. But there

  992. is perhaps

  993. a love

  994. upon that

  995. love for

  996. those who

  997. love his

  998. son and

  999. keep his

  1000. word.

  1001. My father

  1002. will love

  1003. that person,

  1004. says Jesus.

  1005. And then

  1006. this sweet

  1007. promise which

  1008. follows,

  1009. and we

  1010. will come

  1011. to him.

  1012. We will

  1013. come to

  1014. that person.

  1015. not just

  1016. I will

  1017. come to

  1018. him,

  1019. but we,

  1020. father and

  1021. son,

  1022. we will

  1023. come to

  1024. him.

  1025. This will

  1026. no longer

  1027. be what

  1028. seems like

  1029. a long

  1030. distance

  1031. relationship.

  1032. Jesus says

  1033. we will

  1034. come to

  1035. him and

  1036. we will

  1037. make our

  1038. home with

  1039. him.

  1040. That's

  1041. what this

  1042. is all

  1043. about.

  1044. It's about

  1045. a relationship

  1046. between God

  1047. and us.

  1048. maybe you

  1049. remember back

  1050. to earlier

  1051. in the

  1052. chapter.

  1053. In my

  1054. father's

  1055. house,

  1056. there are

  1057. many

  1058. rooms.

  1059. Same

  1060. word here.

  1061. Many

  1062. dwelling

  1063. spaces,

  1064. many abodes.

  1065. That's what

  1066. he's saying

  1067. here.

  1068. We will

  1069. come to

  1070. him,

  1071. we will

  1072. make our

  1073. home,

  1074. our

  1075. dwelling

  1076. with

  1077. him.

  1078. That's

  1079. the promise.

  1080. a good

  1081. king and

  1082. his people

  1083. together.

  1084. A good

  1085. God and

  1086. his people

  1087. together,

  1088. living together

  1089. forever.

  1090. That's the

  1091. trajectory

  1092. here.

  1093. But just

  1094. like the

  1095. disciples,

  1096. for now,

  1097. we live in

  1098. the meantime.

  1099. Jesus hasn't

  1100. come back

  1101. yet,

  1102. and this is

  1103. how God

  1104. wants us

  1105. to live.

  1106. in

  1107. anticipation

  1108. of the

  1109. return of

  1110. the king,

  1111. if you

  1112. love me,

  1113. you will

  1114. keep my

  1115. commands.

  1116. That's the

  1117. end of my

  1118. sermon this

  1119. morning,

  1120. but now

  1121. it's your

  1122. turn to

  1123. preach to

  1124. me.

  1125. I mean,

  1126. we couldn't

  1127. go through

  1128. this whole

  1129. message and

  1130. really get a

  1131. lot of

  1132. benefit out

  1133. of it if

  1134. we didn't

  1135. even talk

  1136. about what

  1137. the commands

  1138. of Jesus

  1139. are,

  1140. right?

  1141. It's not

  1142. enough to

  1143. just have a

  1144. general change

  1145. of heart or

  1146. attitude towards

  1147. the commands

  1148. of Jesus.

  1149. We actually

  1150. have to do

  1151. them.

  1152. We have to

  1153. obey them.

  1154. So what are

  1155. they?

  1156. So I'm

  1157. going to turn

  1158. the sermon

  1159. over to you

  1160. guys for a

  1161. little bit

  1162. here.

  1163. What are the

  1164. commands of

  1165. Jesus to

  1166. his followers?

  1167. Love one

  1168. another.

  1169. Make

  1170. disciples of

  1171. all nations.

  1172. preach the

  1173. gospel,

  1174. the good

  1175. news.

  1176. Don't be

  1177. shy.

  1178. Shut them

  1179. out.

  1180. There's lots

  1181. of them.

  1182. Do unto

  1183. others as

  1184. you would

  1185. have them

  1186. do unto

  1187. you.

  1188. Treat them.

  1189. Yeah.

  1190. Okay.

  1191. Yeah.

  1192. Love the

  1193. Lord your

  1194. God with

  1195. all your

  1196. heart,

  1197. soul,

  1198. mind,

  1199. and strength

  1200. above all

  1201. things.

  1202. What else?

  1203. Pray.

  1204. Yeah.

  1205. What else?

  1206. Obey his

  1207. commands.

  1208. Yep.

  1209. That's one

  1210. of them.

  1211. To love

  1212. truth.

  1213. Remain in

  1214. me or

  1215. abide in

  1216. me.

  1217. Yes.

  1218. Stay

  1219. connected to

  1220. me.

  1221. forgive.

  1222. Forgive.

  1223. Yes.

  1224. Forgive.

  1225. That's a

  1226. tough one.

  1227. What else?

  1228. Love your

  1229. enemies.

  1230. Seek first

  1231. his kingdom

  1232. and his

  1233. righteousness.

  1234. Yeah.

  1235. acknowledge

  1236. there is

  1237. no

  1238. God

  1239. except

  1240. Jesus.

  1241. Okay.

  1242. Yeah.

  1243. Acknowledge

  1244. Jesus.

  1245. Do not

  1246. be anxious

  1247. about

  1248. anything.

  1249. Do not

  1250. worry about

  1251. your life,

  1252. what you

  1253. will eat

  1254. or drink

  1255. or what

  1256. you will

  1257. wear.

  1258. fear not.

  1259. Fear not.

  1260. Yeah.

  1261. Yes.

  1262. Take up

  1263. your cross

  1264. and follow

  1265. me,

  1266. said Jesus.

  1267. Repent.

  1268. Turn away

  1269. from your

  1270. sins.

  1271. Yes.

  1272. Trust.

  1273. Yeah.

  1274. Believe in

  1275. God.

  1276. Believe also

  1277. in me,

  1278. said Jesus.

  1279. Okay.

  1280. Yeah.

  1281. Present your

  1282. body as a

  1283. living sacrifice.

  1284. This is a

  1285. great sample

  1286. that you've

  1287. given of

  1288. the commands

  1289. of Jesus.

  1290. It's so

  1291. important that

  1292. we know what

  1293. they are because

  1294. how can we

  1295. do them

  1296. if we don't

  1297. know what

  1298. they are.

  1299. This is the

  1300. kind of life

  1301. that Jesus

  1302. is calling

  1303. us to.

  1304. And it's

  1305. not that

  1306. we'll do

  1307. it perfectly.

  1308. He knows

  1309. that.

  1310. Jesus died

  1311. so that we

  1312. could be

  1313. forgiven for

  1314. all of our

  1315. falling short

  1316. of that.

  1317. But this

  1318. is what

  1319. he has

  1320. called us

  1321. to do,

  1322. how he's

  1323. called us

  1324. to live.

  1325. All of

  1326. these things

  1327. and the

  1328. ones that we

  1329. didn't even

  1330. get to yet,

  1331. these are

  1332. the commands

  1333. of Jesus

  1334. and Jesus

  1335. says,

  1336. if you

  1337. love me,

  1338. you will

  1339. keep my

  1340. commands.

  1341. Let's

  1342. pray.

  1343. Father in

  1344. heaven,

  1345. thank you

  1346. for your

  1347. word.

  1348. Thank you

  1349. for the

  1350. truth that

  1351. you bring

  1352. to us.

  1353. I pray

  1354. and ask

  1355. Lord that

  1356. you would

  1357. help us

  1358. as we

  1359. seek to

  1360. live in

  1361. obedience

  1362. to Jesus.

  1363. Lord,

  1364. we confess

  1365. right now

  1366. it's not

  1367. easy and

  1368. there's so

  1369. many times

  1370. that we

  1371. want to

  1372. do other

  1373. things.

  1374. We want

  1375. to do

  1376. some of

  1377. the things

  1378. you told

  1379. us not

  1380. to do

  1381. or we

  1382. want to

  1383. just shirk

  1384. off the

  1385. things that

  1386. you called

  1387. us to do.

  1388. And so we

  1389. pray and ask

  1390. like David

  1391. did that you

  1392. would not

  1393. allow our

  1394. hearts to

  1395. go there,

  1396. to be drawn

  1397. to those

  1398. things.

  1399. We ask

  1400. that you

  1401. would enable

  1402. us,

  1403. that you

  1404. would fill

  1405. us with

  1406. a holy

  1407. desire to

  1408. serve you

  1409. remind us

  1410. every day

  1411. of just

  1412. the awesome

  1413. and wonderful

  1414. king that

  1415. you are,

  1416. of your

  1417. great love

  1418. for us,

  1419. and lead

  1420. us in

  1421. obedience,

  1422. lead us

  1423. in doing

  1424. all those

  1425. works that

  1426. you prepared

  1427. in advance

  1428. for us

  1429. to do,

  1430. for the

  1431. blessing and

  1432. building up

  1433. of each

  1434. other,

  1435. our families,

  1436. and for the

  1437. people here

  1438. in Davidson.

  1439. We ask

  1440. this for the

  1441. glory of

  1442. Christ.

  1443. Amen.
