  1. Our passage this morning comes from the book of Romans.

  2. If you have your Bible with you, feel free to open it up to Romans chapter 7.

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  3. As we initially read it, it won't be on the screen,

  4. so you can use the Bibles in the seats in front of you, or you can use your own.

  5. Romans was a letter written to the church at Rome by the Apostle Paul,

  6. and this letter was written about 20 to 30 years after Jesus died

  7. and rose and ascended into heaven.

  8. And this letter is one of the heavier letters in the Bible.

  9. And what I mean by that is Paul writes this letter to teach the church

  10. about a number of different themes.

  11. And kind of throughout the whole letter, he's developing several arguments,

  12. and each section builds on the one that came before.

  13. Almost every paragraph and sentence of Romans is packed full of truth

  14. about God and Jesus and sin and how we're saved and God's great plan

  15. and the truth about how we should live as followers of Jesus.

  16. So we're just going to jump right into one passage here in Romans chapter 7 this morning.

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  17. And we won't have the chance to talk about everything Paul says here in these two paragraphs,

  18. but what we will see, I hope and pray, will be a blessing to you this morning.

  19. So we pick it up in Romans chapter 7, verse 14.

    Romans 7:14

  20. We know that the law is spiritual.

  21. Paul is talking about the law of God,

  22. as in the law that God gave through Moses at Mount Sinai to the Israelites all those years ago.

  23. So probably a helpful thing to think of when you hear that is the Ten Commandments,

  24. something from the law that most of us are familiar with.

  25. Paul says,

  26. We know that the law is spiritual,

  27. but I am unspiritual,

  28. sold as a slave to sin.

  29. I do not understand what I do.

  30. For what I want to do, I do not do.

  31. But what I hate, I do.

  32. And if I do what I do not want to do,

  33. I agree that the law is good.

  34. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it,

  35. but it is sin living in me.

  36. For I know that good itself does not dwell in me,

  37. that is, in my sinful nature.

  38. For I have the desire to do what is good,

  39. but I cannot carry it out.

  40. For I do not do the good I want to do,

  41. but the evil I do not want to do.

  42. This I keep on doing.

  43. Now, if I do what I do not want to do,

  44. it is no longer I who do it,

  45. but it is sin living in me that does it.

  46. So I find this law at work.

  47. Although I want to do good,

  48. evil is right there with me.

  49. For in my inner being,

  50. I delight in God's law,

  51. but I see another law at work in me,

  52. waging war against the law of my mind,

  53. and making me a prisoner of the law of sin

  54. at work within me.

  55. What a wretched man I am!

  56. Who will rescue me from this body of death?

  57. I really treasure these words.

  58. In fact, for as long as I can remember,

  59. since I was a boy,

  60. these words have resonated deeply with me.

  61. There's something Paul describes here

  62. from his own experience

  63. that is true to each of our experiences.

  64. Paul describes the battle within,

  65. that inner conflict that we all feel and face.

  66. Paul begins this very emotional

  67. and passionate description

  68. by referring to the law.

  69. He says that the law is spiritual,

  70. but then all of a sudden,

  71. he reflects on himself.

  72. The law is spiritual,

  73. but I am unspiritual,

  74. sold as a slave to sin.

  75. What is Paul doing here?

  76. He is lamenting.

  77. He's thinking about the law of God

  78. and how good it is.

  79. How good are those commands

  80. that God has given?

  81. They are the good and the beautiful

  82. and the right things.

  83. They are the way of love.

  84. But I, says Paul,

  85. I am not full of the spiritual stuff

  86. that I see in the law,

  87. in those commands.

  88. I am unspiritual,

  89. sold as a slave to sin.

  90. When we talk about sin,

  91. we usually think of it

  92. as the bad things that we do.

  93. And it is.

  94. But notice how Paul describes sin here.

  95. Not just the bad things he does,

  96. it's more.

  97. It's worse.

  98. It's a thing that enslaves him.

  99. Sold as a slave to sin.

  100. It's like a slave master

  101. that owns him,

  102. that has him under its control

  103. so that he is not free.

  104. And then Paul goes on

  105. to describe his own experience

  106. as a slave to sin.

  107. He says,

  108. I do not understand what I do.

  109. For what I want to do,

  110. I do not do.

  111. But what I hate,

  112. I do.

  113. It's almost like a tone

  114. of frustration here.

  115. Almost like Paul is perplexed.

  116. Like, what's going on with me?

  117. What's wrong with me?

  118. There are things that I recognize

  119. as good and beautiful and right.

  120. And there are things

  121. that I recognize as wrong

  122. and ugly and evil.

  123. And I hate those evil things.

  124. I don't like them one bit.

  125. But I keep finding myself

  126. not doing the good

  127. and the right and the beautiful

  128. and instead doing

  129. the ugly, the wrong,

  130. the things I hate.

  131. I think every single one of us

  132. can relate to that

  133. because every single one of us

  134. has experienced

  135. that inward conflict,

  136. that inward battle.

  137. Even our world acknowledges

  138. this battle.

  139. We've all seen

  140. at least one movie or TV show

  141. with the little angel

  142. on one shoulder

  143. and the little devil

  144. on the other shoulder.

  145. We all know

  146. that this battle is real.

  147. We might experience it

  148. in some different kinds of ways.

  149. We might be tempted

  150. by different things

  151. or drawn to different things.

  152. But it's the same battle,

  153. the same conflict

  154. in all of us

  155. underneath it all.

  156. For example,

  157. you know that it's wrong

  158. and ugly

  159. and evil

  160. to say that hurtful thing

  161. about this person

  162. standing in front of you

  163. just to make this friend

  164. over here laugh.

  165. but you say it anyway.

  166. And the laugh

  167. of your friend over here,

  168. it feels good,

  169. it feels worth it

  170. for the moment,

  171. but then you look back

  172. and you see the hurt

  173. on the face

  174. of the person in front of you

  175. that you just insulted.

  176. And in your heart,

  177. you know

  178. that it was wrong

  179. and that you shouldn't

  180. have said it.

  181. What I want to do,

  182. I do not do.

  183. But what I hate,

  184. I do.

  185. He goes on.

  186. And if I do

  187. what I do not want to do,

  188. I agree

  189. that the law is good.

  190. At least this inward struggle

  191. or battle

  192. shows that I have a conscience.

  193. At least it shows

  194. that I have an inward sense

  195. of what is good

  196. and right

  197. and beautiful.

  198. I know

  199. deep down in here

  200. what God's law says.

  201. I agree

  202. that it's good.

  203. I want to live

  204. like He says

  205. I should.

  206. But there's a problem

  207. with me.

  208. There's something else

  209. in me

  210. that wants

  211. the opposite.

  212. He says

  213. as it is.

  214. It is no longer

  215. I myself

  216. who do it

  217. but it is

  218. sin

  219. living in me.

  220. Now we have to be careful here.

  221. I don't think Paul is saying

  222. well

  223. I'm not really guilty

  224. of my sins

  225. of doing those wrong things.

  226. It wasn't me

  227. that did it.

  228. It was

  229. sin

  230. in me.

  231. No

  232. the thing that

  233. is responsible

  234. is still

  235. in Him.

  236. It's still

  237. in us.

  238. And he calls

  239. that thing

  240. sin

  241. living in us

  242. living in me.

  243. Do you hear that?

  244. Paul talks about sin

  245. like it's alive.

  246. A thing that

  247. lives

  248. in us.

  249. and at this point

  250. we might like

  251. to just look

  252. at what Paul says

  253. here and say

  254. well

  255. this is good

  256. I'll put the blame

  257. on that thing

  258. in me

  259. and I'll kind of

  260. you know

  261. deflect the guilt

  262. away from my

  263. true self.

  264. But unfortunately

  265. sin is not like

  266. some parasite

  267. inside of our bodies

  268. or another organism

  269. living in our bodies.

  270. It's worse than that.

  271. It lives in us

  272. because it is us.

  273. It's part of us.

  274. It's hijacked

  275. our very selves

  276. our very bodies

  277. and even worse

  278. our hearts

  279. and our minds

  280. have been infected

  281. and corrupted

  282. by it.

  283. We wish

  284. that we could

  285. blame

  286. it on

  287. the sin

  288. living in us

  289. and kind of

  290. deflect the guilt

  291. away from ourselves

  292. but the Bible

  293. tells us

  294. that there's no

  295. separating of those.

  296. We can't separate

  297. ourselves

  298. from the sin

  299. inside of us.

  300. We are its slave

  301. and it owns us

  302. and has control

  303. over us.

  304. It's not some

  305. other person

  306. inside of us

  307. or some other

  308. entity inside of us

  309. it's us.

  310. We welcomed

  311. this corruption

  312. this thing

  313. called sin

  314. into ourselves

  315. long ago

  316. when we rebelled

  317. against God

  318. at the beginning.

  319. Paul talks about

  320. that in chapter 5.

  321. We won't go there

  322. this morning.

  323. Let's keep on

  324. here in chapter 7

  325. verse 18

  326. For I know

  327. that good itself

  328. does not dwell

  329. in me

  330. that is

  331. in my sinful nature.

  332. Sinful nature

  333. is how the translation

  334. on the screen

  335. renders it

  336. the New International

  337. Version

  338. literally it's flesh

  339. I know

  340. that good itself

  341. does not dwell

  342. in me

  343. that is

  344. in my flesh

  345. and this term

  346. flesh

  347. Paul uses a lot

  348. in other places.

  349. He uses it to mean

  350. more than just

  351. our physical flesh

  352. our body

  353. and so

  354. it somehow

  355. refers to that

  356. that place

  357. from where that

  358. bent towards evil

  359. comes from

  360. inside of us.

  361. That's why

  362. the translation

  363. sinful nature

  364. but let's not

  365. miss the main

  366. point of what

  367. Paul is saying

  368. here.

  369. He's saying

  370. I know

  371. that good itself

  372. does not dwell

  373. in me.

  374. There's a sense

  375. in which good

  376. is unnatural

  377. to us

  378. and it's not

  379. the way that God

  380. made us to be

  381. in the beginning

  382. but something

  383. happened.

  384. We rebelled

  385. against God

  386. and we lost

  387. our goodness.

  388. We lost

  389. our innocence.

  390. We became

  391. so corrupt

  392. that selfishness

  393. is now

  394. what comes

  395. naturally

  396. instead of

  397. goodness.

  398. Goodness now

  399. is like

  400. almost like

  401. a thing

  402. that's not

  403. there anymore

  404. it's a thing

  405. outside of us

  406. and foreign

  407. to us

  408. like God

  409. is good.

  410. He really

  411. does care

  412. about other

  413. people.

  414. about the

  415. things he

  416. has made

  417. but we

  418. are not

  419. like him

  420. anymore.

  421. I know

  422. that good

  423. itself

  424. does not

  425. dwell

  426. in me.

  427. How does

  428. Paul know

  429. this?

  430. Well he points

  431. us back

  432. to the

  433. inward

  434. conflict.

  435. He says

  436. for I have

  437. the desire

  438. to do

  439. what is

  440. good

  441. but I

  442. cannot

  443. carry it

  444. out.

  445. I recognize

  446. what's

  447. good.

  448. Deep

  449. down I

  450. know

  451. what's

  452. good.

  453. I even

  454. desire it

  455. but I

  456. feel powerless

  457. to do

  458. it.

  459. It's like

  460. there are

  461. two choices

  462. before me.

  463. Vegetables

  464. and candy.

  465. I can't

  466. bring myself

  467. to eat

  468. those

  469. vegetables.

  470. I know

  471. that they're

  472. good.

  473. That's

  474. premium

  475. fuel for

  476. this body.

  477. I just

  478. every time

  479. I'm confronted

  480. with that

  481. choice.

  482. I love

  483. the candy.

  484. I want

  485. the candy.

  486. I know

  487. it's

  488. making me

  489. fat.

  490. I know

  491. it's

  492. rotting

  493. my teeth

  494. but I

  495. just feel

  496. powerless

  497. in that

  498. moment of

  499. decision

  500. to do

  501. the good

  502. and not

  503. the

  504. junk food.

  505. It's a

  506. bad analogy

  507. because of

  508. course candy

  509. is something

  510. that even

  511. God has

  512. given us

  513. as a good

  514. gift to

  515. enjoy

  516. in moderation.

  517. Maybe a

  518. better analogy

  519. is roast

  520. beef dinner

  521. and a

  522. bowl of

  523. raw

  524. sewage.

  525. Maybe

  526. that's more

  527. like the

  528. choice

  529. before us.

  530. And this

  531. is why

  532. Paul is

  533. frustrated

  534. because he

  535. sees in

  536. himself

  537. this sick

  538. and twisted

  539. bent,

  540. this preference

  541. for the

  542. raw sewage

  543. over the

  544. roast beef

  545. dinner.

  546. I have

  547. the desire

  548. to do

  549. what is

  550. good but

  551. I cannot

  552. carry it

  553. out.

  554. It's like

  555. it's wired

  556. deeply into

  557. my very

  558. soul.

  559. I can't

  560. help myself.

  561. I just

  562. keep going

  563. back for

  564. more of

  565. it.

  566. And this

  567. is what

  568. sin is.

  569. It's evil.

  570. It's wrong.

  571. It's at

  572. its worst.

  573. It's

  574. disgusting.

  575. At its

  576. best,

  577. it's just

  578. bland and

  579. dim and

  580. empty.

  581. We all

  582. know it.

  583. we tend

  584. to minimize

  585. it though.

  586. We tend

  587. to minimize

  588. the sin

  589. that we

  590. have in

  591. our own

  592. lives.

  593. But it's

  594. there.

  595. And it

  596. stinks.

  597. It's easy

  598. to look over

  599. at somebody

  600. else who's

  601. maybe arrogant

  602. and obnoxious

  603. and just

  604. loves themselves

  605. and can only

  606. talk about

  607. themselves and

  608. we think,

  609. whew, I'm

  610. so glad I'm

  611. not like

  612. that.

  613. God.

  614. But have

  615. we ever

  616. stopped to

  617. think that

  618. perhaps we

  619. are just

  620. as blind

  621. to our

  622. own sin

  623. as he

  624. is to

  625. his?

  626. Sin is

  627. ugly.

  628. God and

  629. his commands

  630. and laws

  631. are beautiful

  632. and good.

  633. Let's think

  634. for a moment

  635. on what God

  636. has commanded.

  637. Let's think

  638. of some of

  639. those things.

  640. we'll just

  641. look at

  642. three of

  643. the Ten

  644. Commandments.

  645. You shall

  646. not steal.

  647. It's good.

  648. It's beautiful

  649. when you can

  650. go to work

  651. and earn

  652. and purchase

  653. and own

  654. something

  655. and have

  656. that thing

  657. belong to

  658. you so that

  659. you can use

  660. it when you

  661. need it

  662. and enjoy

  663. it because

  664. you like

  665. it.

  666. And it's

  667. wrong.

  668. It's ugly

  669. when someone

  670. simply comes

  671. along and

  672. takes that

  673. thing from

  674. you.

  675. They did

  676. nothing

  677. for it.

  678. You did

  679. the work

  680. for it.

  681. You bought

  682. it.

  683. It belongs

  684. to you

  685. and they

  686. just take

  687. it for

  688. themselves.

  689. Or we

  690. could look

  691. at the

  692. command to

  693. honor your

  694. father and

  695. mother.

  696. It's

  697. good.

  698. It's

  699. beautiful

  700. when after

  701. years of

  702. caring for

  703. every little

  704. need of

  705. your children

  706. who start

  707. life

  708. completely

  709. helpless,

  710. it's

  711. good and

  712. beautiful

  713. when your

  714. children

  715. honor you

  716. and treat

  717. you with

  718. respect and

  719. kindness

  720. and recognize

  721. all the

  722. love,

  723. every

  724. sacrifice

  725. that you

  726. made for

  727. them.

  728. And it's

  729. wrong and

  730. it's ugly

  731. when they

  732. curse you

  733. and say,

  734. you,

  735. dad,

  736. I don't

  737. have to

  738. listen to

  739. you.

  740. I'm not

  741. going to

  742. do what

  743. you want

  744. me to

  745. do.

  746. I'm going

  747. to do

  748. whatever I

  749. want to

  750. do.

  751. Or we

  752. could look

  753. at the

  754. seventh

  755. commandment.

  756. You

  757. shall not

  758. commit

  759. adultery.

  760. God has

  761. commanded

  762. this.

  763. It's

  764. good and

  765. beautiful

  766. when wedding

  767. vows are

  768. made and

  769. kept.

  770. It's

  771. good and

  772. beautiful when

  773. husbands and

  774. wives are

  775. loyal to

  776. each other

  777. and love

  778. each other

  779. and cherish

  780. each other

  781. and protect

  782. and honor

  783. and are

  784. faithful to

  785. each other

  786. helping each

  787. other through

  788. life, both

  789. the good

  790. times and

  791. the hard

  792. times.

  793. And it's

  794. wrong and

  795. it's ugly

  796. when wedding

  797. vows and

  798. promises are

  799. broken,

  800. when husbands

  801. betray their

  802. wives and

  803. give themselves

  804. to other

  805. women just

  806. to satisfy

  807. their lust

  808. or craving.

  809. It's wrong

  810. and it's

  811. ugly when

  812. women leave

  813. their husbands

  814. and give

  815. themselves to

  816. another man

  817. because,

  818. well,

  819. things aren't

  820. going as

  821. well as

  822. they did

  823. before.

  824. And this

  825. man over

  826. here,

  827. he treats

  828. me better.

  829. Oftentimes

  830. in these

  831. cases,

  832. we see some

  833. of the damage

  834. that comes

  835. from that.

  836. Families are

  837. torn apart.

  838. Children are

  839. forced to

  840. grow up,

  841. going back

  842. and forth

  843. between two

  844. homes or

  845. without a

  846. dad or

  847. a mom.

  848. this is

  849. oftentimes what

  850. happens when

  851. someone commits

  852. adultery.

  853. Broken

  854. vows lead

  855. to broken

  856. hearts,

  857. lead to

  858. broken

  859. homes.

  860. These are

  861. just a few

  862. examples of

  863. the goodness

  864. of God's

  865. law and

  866. the ugliness

  867. of sin.

  868. I got

  869. thinking about

  870. this.

  871. Wouldn't it

  872. be a wonderful

  873. world if

  874. everyone in

  875. the world

  876. just lived

  877. the way

  878. God told

  879. us to?

  880. I mean,

  881. think about

  882. that.

  883. If everyone

  884. in the

  885. world just

  886. treated each

  887. other with

  888. kindness,

  889. honor,

  890. respect,

  891. spoke the

  892. truth,

  893. kept our

  894. word,

  895. our promises,

  896. never stole,

  897. never killed,

  898. and the

  899. list goes

  900. on.

  901. It'd be a

  902. wonderful place

  903. to live.

  904. life.

  905. But the

  906. problem is

  907. we can't

  908. live like

  909. that because

  910. as Paul

  911. says,

  912. we are no

  913. longer free

  914. like we

  915. were made

  916. to be in

  917. the beginning.

  918. We are

  919. slaves to

  920. this thing

  921. living in

  922. us,

  923. sin.

  924. Paul goes

  925. on, he

  926. says,

  927. for I do

  928. not do

  929. the good

  930. I want

  931. to do,

  932. but the

  933. evil I do

  934. not want

  935. to do.

  936. This I

  937. keep on

  938. doing.

  939. So I

  940. find this

  941. law at

  942. work.

  943. Although I

  944. want to

  945. do good,

  946. evil is

  947. right there

  948. with me.

  949. For in

  950. my inner

  951. being I

  952. delight in

  953. God's

  954. law,

  955. but I

  956. see another

  957. law at

  958. work in

  959. me,

  960. waging war

  961. against the

  962. law of my

  963. mind and

  964. making me a

  965. prisoner of

  966. the law

  967. of sin

  968. at work

  969. within me.

  970. Here it

  971. is.

  972. This is the

  973. problem with

  974. the whole

  975. world right

  976. here.

  977. We often

  978. read the

  979. news and

  980. we hear

  981. about all

  982. the messed

  983. up and

  984. twisted and

  985. evil stuff

  986. going on.

  987. Some of you

  988. got texts

  989. on your

  990. phone this

  991. morning saying

  992. that somebody

  993. has been going

  994. around stabbing

  995. people.

  996. people.

  997. And then

  998. we hear

  999. people in

  1000. the world

  1001. proposing

  1002. solutions to

  1003. this problem.

  1004. We need

  1005. changes in

  1006. government.

  1007. We need

  1008. better policies

  1009. and laws.

  1010. We need a

  1011. better justice

  1012. system.

  1013. We need to

  1014. fix systemic

  1015. problems.

  1016. We need to

  1017. do better at

  1018. promoting peace

  1019. and stopping

  1020. war.

  1021. And if you

  1022. over here and

  1023. you over here

  1024. and you over

  1025. there would

  1026. just stop

  1027. behaving the

  1028. way that you

  1029. are and

  1030. start behaving

  1031. the way that

  1032. you should,

  1033. this world

  1034. would be a

  1035. better place.

  1036. But all of

  1037. this is not

  1038. the reason.

  1039. It's not the

  1040. root issue

  1041. of the

  1042. problem.

  1043. It's not

  1044. the root

  1045. issue of

  1046. the evil

  1047. we see in

  1048. the world

  1049. today.

  1050. There is a

  1051. systemic

  1052. problem.

  1053. But it's

  1054. much, much

  1055. deeper than

  1056. matters of

  1057. race,

  1058. privilege,

  1059. legislation.

  1060. The

  1061. systemic

  1062. problem is

  1063. something we

  1064. all have.

  1065. And it's

  1066. this.

  1067. There is

  1068. another law

  1069. at work

  1070. within me,

  1071. within all

  1072. of us,

  1073. waging war

  1074. inside of

  1075. me and

  1076. making me a

  1077. prisoner and

  1078. a slave of

  1079. sin.

  1080. It is that

  1081. principle, that

  1082. power of sin

  1083. within us.

  1084. That's the

  1085. systemic problem

  1086. with the

  1087. world.

  1088. God.

  1089. And that's

  1090. what Paul's

  1091. lamenting

  1092. here.

  1093. Even the

  1094. good Jew

  1095. that he

  1096. has been

  1097. growing up

  1098. all these

  1099. years taught

  1100. from the

  1101. time he

  1102. was a

  1103. little boy

  1104. to obey

  1105. the commands

  1106. of God

  1107. and what

  1108. the good

  1109. commands of

  1110. God are.

  1111. And yet,

  1112. what does

  1113. he say?

  1114. He says,

  1115. all this

  1116. time I've

  1117. been seeing

  1118. another law

  1119. at work

  1120. inside of

  1121. me.

  1122. There's been

  1123. this battle,

  1124. this war that's

  1125. raging inside of

  1126. me.

  1127. Although I

  1128. want to do

  1129. good, evil

  1130. is right there

  1131. with me.

  1132. And all I

  1133. feel is pull.

  1134. And

  1135. oftentimes,

  1136. says Paul,

  1137. I do the

  1138. thing I don't

  1139. want to do.

  1140. I do the

  1141. thing I

  1142. hate.

  1143. So much

  1144. so that it's

  1145. as though Paul

  1146. just weeps

  1147. about it.

  1148. He says,

  1149. what a wretched

  1150. man I am.

  1151. Who will

  1152. rescue me from

  1153. this body of

  1154. death?

  1155. There's things

  1156. I've done.

  1157. There's things

  1158. that we've all

  1159. done and

  1160. things that we

  1161. know we've

  1162. done and we

  1163. know we're

  1164. not proud of

  1165. them.

  1166. I hate the

  1167. me that chose

  1168. to do those

  1169. things.

  1170. What a wretched

  1171. man I am.

  1172. Who will

  1173. rescue me

  1174. from this

  1175. body of

  1176. death?

  1177. Do you

  1178. hear the

  1179. frustration

  1180. and the

  1181. angst in

  1182. Paul's tone

  1183. here?

  1184. The inner

  1185. regret and

  1186. turmoil?

  1187. And it

  1188. almost seems

  1189. like a

  1190. question that

  1191. expects the

  1192. answer to be

  1193. no one.

  1194. Like,

  1195. nobody can.

  1196. Who can fix

  1197. this brokenness

  1198. inside of me?

  1199. I've tried and

  1200. I've tried and

  1201. I've tried but

  1202. I can't do

  1203. it.

  1204. But then

  1205. Paul tells us

  1206. the good news

  1207. that we've all

  1208. been hoping

  1209. for.

  1210. He says,

  1211. thanks be to

  1212. God who

  1213. delivers me

  1214. through Jesus

  1215. Christ our

  1216. Lord.

  1217. Lord.

  1218. God.

  1219. There is

  1220. someone who

  1221. can fix the

  1222. brokenness

  1223. inside of

  1224. me.

  1225. There is

  1226. someone who

  1227. can make

  1228. right all

  1229. the wrongs

  1230. that I've

  1231. done.

  1232. There is

  1233. someone who

  1234. can give

  1235. me victory

  1236. in that

  1237. inward

  1238. battle.

  1239. There is

  1240. someone who

  1241. someday will

  1242. put an end

  1243. to that war

  1244. going on

  1245. inside of

  1246. me for

  1247. good.

  1248. And that

  1249. someone is

  1250. God.

  1251. God.

  1252. And he

  1253. has done

  1254. all this

  1255. and he

  1256. will do

  1257. all that

  1258. remains of

  1259. this through

  1260. Jesus Christ

  1261. our Lord.

  1262. Think back

  1263. over the

  1264. story of

  1265. Jesus.

  1266. Jesus

  1267. atoned for

  1268. our sins,

  1269. making right

  1270. what has been

  1271. made wrong.

  1272. He suffered

  1273. the punishment

  1274. that we

  1275. deserve for

  1276. all of those

  1277. things that

  1278. we've done

  1279. when he died

  1280. on the cross.

  1281. and he

  1282. was able

  1283. to do

  1284. it because

  1285. he had

  1286. no sins

  1287. of his

  1288. own.

  1289. Perfect

  1290. son of

  1291. God

  1292. that he

  1293. was.

  1294. Not only

  1295. that, but

  1296. Jesus teaches

  1297. us how to

  1298. fight that

  1299. inward battle.

  1300. We see

  1301. Jesus go

  1302. head to

  1303. head with

  1304. the devil

  1305. himself in

  1306. the wilderness.

  1307. He was

  1308. tempted and

  1309. he won.

  1310. God

  1311. and we

  1312. hear him

  1313. urge his

  1314. disciples

  1315. and us

  1316. pray so

  1317. that you

  1318. will not

  1319. fall into

  1320. temptation.

  1321. We hear

  1322. him urge us

  1323. if you

  1324. love me

  1325. you will

  1326. keep my

  1327. commands.

  1328. And then

  1329. we see how

  1330. his disciples

  1331. they sometimes

  1332. failed and

  1333. gave in

  1334. anyway.

  1335. They did

  1336. the wrong

  1337. thing.

  1338. And then

  1339. again we

  1340. see the

  1341. depth of

  1342. his love

  1343. for them

  1344. still.

  1345. Forgiving

  1346. them.

  1347. Wiping

  1348. the slate

  1349. clean.

  1350. Giving

  1351. them

  1352. another

  1353. chance.

  1354. Next

  1355. Sunday we're

  1356. going to

  1357. see how

  1358. it's the

  1359. spirit of

  1360. Jesus.

  1361. The Holy

  1362. Spirit of

  1363. God who

  1364. Jesus gives

  1365. to every

  1366. believer.

  1367. And that

  1368. spirit enables

  1369. and gives

  1370. us power to

  1371. overcome and

  1372. win this

  1373. inward battle

  1374. like we

  1375. never could

  1376. do it

  1377. before.

  1378. And then

  1379. finally there's

  1380. the promise

  1381. of Jesus.

  1382. that when he

  1383. returns he's

  1384. going to

  1385. raise all

  1386. who believe

  1387. in him to

  1388. new life.

  1389. Eternal life.

  1390. And Paul

  1391. tells us in

  1392. another letter

  1393. that we're

  1394. going to

  1395. receive a

  1396. new body

  1397. and it

  1398. will be

  1399. incorruptible.

  1400. From that

  1401. day forward

  1402. we will be

  1403. free of the

  1404. corruption and

  1405. taint of

  1406. sin forever.

  1407. That will be

  1408. the day that

  1409. the inward

  1410. battle ends

  1411. for good.

  1412. All of

  1413. this, all

  1414. of these good

  1415. things come

  1416. from God

  1417. as a gift

  1418. of love

  1419. and mercy

  1420. through Jesus

  1421. Christ

  1422. our Lord.

  1423. Which brings

  1424. us this

  1425. morning to

  1426. the table.

  1427. Let me

  1428. read you

  1429. Paul's own

  1430. way of

  1431. telling us

  1432. how this

  1433. works just

  1434. in the next

  1435. few verses.

  1436. We'll just

  1437. go through

  1438. this quickly.

  1439. Paul says,

  1440. therefore,

  1441. there is

  1442. now no

  1443. condemnation

  1444. for those

  1445. who are

  1446. in Christ

  1447. Jesus.

  1448. Why?

  1449. Because,

  1450. he says,

  1451. through Christ

  1452. Jesus,

  1453. the law of

  1454. the Spirit

  1455. who gives

  1456. life has

  1457. set you free

  1458. from the law

  1459. of sin

  1460. and death.

  1461. How does

  1462. it work?

  1463. He goes

  1464. on.

  1465. for what

  1466. the law

  1467. was powerless

  1468. to do

  1469. because it

  1470. was weakened

  1471. by the

  1472. flesh,

  1473. God did

  1474. by sending

  1475. his own

  1476. son in

  1477. the likeness

  1478. of sinful

  1479. flesh to

  1480. be a sin

  1481. offering.

  1482. And so,

  1483. God condemned

  1484. sin,

  1485. that's our

  1486. sins,

  1487. in the

  1488. flesh,

  1489. that's

  1490. Jesus'

  1491. flesh,

  1492. in order

  1493. that the

  1494. righteous

  1495. requirement

  1496. of the

  1497. law

  1498. might be

  1499. fully met

  1500. in us.

  1501. That's the

  1502. good news

  1503. according to

  1504. Paul.

  1505. And he'll

  1506. go on and

  1507. he'll talk

  1508. about how

  1509. the Spirit

  1510. is then

  1511. given and

  1512. we have

  1513. new power

  1514. to fight

  1515. the battle

  1516. within

  1517. but the

  1518. decisive

  1519. turning point

  1520. in this

  1521. battle

  1522. is one

  1523. here

  1524. at the

  1525. cross.

  1526. That's what

  1527. Paul's

  1528. talking about.

  1529. God

  1530. condemned

  1531. sin.

  1532. That's our

  1533. sins.

  1534. In the

  1535. flesh,

  1536. that's

  1537. Jesus'

  1538. body,

  1539. so that

  1540. the righteous

  1541. requirements

  1542. of the

  1543. law might

  1544. be fully

  1545. met in

  1546. us,

  1547. so that

  1548. there is

  1549. now no

  1550. condemnation

  1551. from God

  1552. for those

  1553. of us

  1554. who are

  1555. in

  1556. Christ

  1557. Jesus.

  1558. Our

  1559. forgiveness,

  1560. our life,

  1561. our victory

  1562. over this

  1563. power of

  1564. sin and

  1565. death,

  1566. it came

  1567. through the

  1568. suffering and

  1569. death of

  1570. Jesus

  1571. on our

  1572. behalf,

  1573. on the

  1574. cross.

  1575. It was

  1576. there that

  1577. God condemned,

  1578. he punished

  1579. Jesus for

  1580. our sins.

  1581. This was

  1582. the plan

  1583. and gift

  1584. of God

  1585. to save

  1586. us.

  1587. And this

  1588. was the

  1589. loving

  1590. decision of

  1591. Jesus

  1592. made to

  1593. rescue us.

  1594. And so

  1595. once a

  1596. month we

  1597. mark this

  1598. love,

  1599. this

  1600. sacrifice

  1601. with bread

  1602. and cup,

  1603. just like

  1604. Jesus taught

  1605. us to on

  1606. the night

  1607. of his

  1608. betrayal.

  1609. The bread

  1610. that's broken

  1611. and shared

  1612. out represents

  1613. the body

  1614. of Jesus,

  1615. which was

  1616. broken,

  1617. died for

  1618. us.

  1619. And the

  1620. cup represents

  1621. the blood

  1622. of Jesus,

  1623. also another

  1624. symbol of

  1625. his death,

  1626. which atones

  1627. for us.

  1628. And we

  1629. eat and

  1630. drink this

  1631. bread and

  1632. cup to

  1633. signify that

  1634. yes,

  1635. we have

  1636. come to

  1637. share in

  1638. all that

  1639. Jesus'

  1640. sacrifice

  1641. secures for

  1642. us.

  1643. And so

  1644. this morning

  1645. if you

  1646. believe in

  1647. Jesus,

  1648. if you've

  1649. made that

  1650. decision,

  1651. if you've

  1652. made that

  1653. declaration,

  1654. yes,

  1655. Jesus is

  1656. the Lord.

  1657. He is my

  1658. Lord.

  1659. Then I

  1660. invite you to

  1661. partake with

  1662. us this

  1663. morning of

  1664. the bread

  1665. and of the

  1666. cup as we

  1667. pass them

  1668. around.

  1669. It's a

  1670. solemn thing

  1671. that we

  1672. do,

  1673. but it's

  1674. a deeply

  1675. sweet thing

  1676. that we

  1677. do,

  1678. because it's

  1679. all about

  1680. the love

  1681. of Christ,

  1682. which saved

  1683. us and

  1684. which set

  1685. us free

  1686. from sin

  1687. and

  1688. condemnation.

  1689. So I

  1690. want to

  1691. invite you

  1692. to pray

  1693. now quietly

  1694. in your

  1695. hearts in

  1696. these next

  1697. minutes.

  1698. I want to

  1699. invite you to

  1700. examine yourselves.

  1701. confess your

  1702. sins to

  1703. God and

  1704. to give

  1705. thanks to

  1706. him for

  1707. the body

  1708. and the

  1709. blood of

  1710. Jesus,

  1711. which was

  1712. broken and

  1713. shed for

  1714. you.

  1715. After a few

  1716. minutes of

  1717. this, I'll

  1718. invite Charles

  1719. to come up

  1720. and pass out

  1721. the elements.

  1722. If you do

  1723. not wish to

  1724. participate,

  1725. just raise

  1726. your hand

  1727. quietly and

  1728. signal that.

  1729. Otherwise,

  1730. we'll wait

  1731. until everybody

  1732. who wishes to

  1733. partake has

  1734. been served.

  1735. And then we'll

  1736. eat and we'll

  1737. drink together

  1738. in unison.

  1739. Amen.

  1740. morning.

  1741. How many

  1742. do you

  1743. know

  1744. Amen.

  1745. Amen.

  1746. Amen.

  1747. Amen.

  1748. Amen.

  1749. Amen.

1750. I wrestled for a moment whether to put that image up on the screen,

1751. but it brings home to our hearts the reality of the love that Jesus had for us,

1752. that he did that for us.

1753. So let's eat and drink in celebration of that love.

  1754. Amen.

1755. Father in heaven, we thank you for sending Jesus.

1756. Lord Jesus, we thank you for being willing to do this for us.

1757. Thank you that we can have complete forgiveness,

1758. complete peace between us and you,

  1759. life forever,

1760. and that one day this war which rages inside of us will be gone,

  1761. never to be remembered.

1762. We give you praise and we give you thanks for your great sacrifice

1763. and the love that you have for us.

1764. To your name be the glory.

  1765. Amen.

  1766. Amen.

  1767. Amen.

  1768. Amen.

  1769. Amen.

  1770. Amen.

  1771. Amen.

  1772. Amen.

  1773. Amen.
