  1. Well, this morning we're going to be partaking together of the Lord's table.

  2. And it's a familiar thing that we do each month, the bread and the cup.

  3. But it's also one of the most precious things that we do as a church.

  4. We celebrate something very special when we do it.

  5. And so to help us reflect again on the meaning of this table,

  6. we're looking to what the Apostle Paul wrote in 1 Thessalonians,

  7. a letter to the church at Thessalonica.

  8. In this letter, Paul celebrates how the good news of Jesus

  9. caused a massive impact on the people who believed in this city of Thessalonica.

  10. There were many in Thessalonica who were hostile to the message about Jesus.

  11. But there were some there who embraced it.

  12. And it was obvious that they accepted it

  13. because doing so was risky, very dangerous.

  14. And yet Paul tells us about how they began to follow Jesus with joy,

  15. even in the midst of suffering.

  16. You could imagine how opposition like this might tempt us to withdraw,

  17. to retreat, to stay quiet about our faith in Jesus.

  18. But Paul says that it wasn't that way when you Thessalonians believed.

  19. You began to tell people all around you about Jesus.

  20. The Lord's message rang out from you into the surrounding region, says Paul.

  21. And it was obvious to all the people around them that they truly believed in Jesus

  22. because all the people around them saw how they just stopped worshipping idols.

  23. That was a prevalent practice in that city.

  24. And instead they began worshipping the one true God.

  25. Paul says that their faith, even from the early days,

  26. was marked with an eager expectation.

  27. They believed everything they heard about Jesus

  28. and they were waiting for something.

  29. Paul says,

  30. You turned to God from idols

  31. to serve the living and true God

  32. and to wait for his Son from heaven,

  33. whom he raised from the dead.

  34. Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.

  35. So almost 2,000 years ago,

  36. there they were in the city of Thessalonica

  37. embracing what they heard about Jesus,

  38. turning away from the cherished idols of the city in which they lived,

  39. telling the people all around them about Jesus

  40. and waiting for Jesus, the Messiah,

  41. to come back and to rescue them from the coming wrath.

  42. This is such an interesting description of Jesus here in verse 10.

  43. Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.

  44. You know, there were so many other ways

  45. that Paul could have finished that sentence

  46. or described Jesus here.

  47. Jesus, the good shepherd.

  48. Jesus, the gentle and lowly of heart.

  49. Jesus, the Lamb of God,

  50. who takes away the sins of the world.

  51. Jesus, the one who put those religious hypocrites in their place.

  52. But this is how Paul describes Jesus.

  53. Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.

  54. Somebody, I forget who, said that this little snippet of the verse

  55. is the gospel in a nutshell.

  56. The good news of Jesus.

  57. He is the one who rescues us

  58. from the wrath of God that is coming.

  59. Now, when we hear the coming wrath,

  60. I'm guessing that for some of you,

  61. those words strike a nerve.

  62. For some of us, they may get us thinking

  63. that God is just angry with us

  64. and just waiting to punish us.

  65. For others, you may be thinking

  66. that Paul is just using this kind of language

  67. to guilt them into believing

  68. or submitting.

  69. Some of you may be embarrassed by these words.

  70. The coming wrath.

  71. Don't talk about that, Josh.

  72. Or at least if we talk about it here in church,

  73. that's fine.

  74. But don't talk about that outside these four walls

  75. because we don't want to offend people

  76. or turn them off.

  77. But Paul didn't shy away from telling people

  78. the truth

  79. about the coming wrath of God.

  80. And with that,

  81. he gave them the good news

  82. that Jesus rescues us

  83. from that wrath

  84. that's coming.

  85. So let's talk about this coming wrath

  86. for a moment.

  87. Why is there a wrath of God

  88. coming

  89. in the future

  90. on our world?

  91. The Bible's answer

  92. is that all of humanity

  93. sinned

  94. against God.

  95. In the beginning,

  96. we rebelled.

  97. God created us.

  98. He loved us.

  99. He was good to us.

  100. He gave us

  101. good commands.

  102. He gave us freedom

  103. to obey

  104. or disobey

  105. those commands.

  106. And long ago,

  107. the Bible tells us

  108. that in the beginning,

  109. we chose to disobey.

  110. And we received

  111. the consequence

  112. for our actions

  113. guilt

  114. came on all humanity.

  115. And ever since

  116. that day,

  117. every single one of us

  118. has been choosing

  119. personally

  120. to disobey,

  121. to do

  122. things

  123. that are sinful.

  124. And not just a little bit,

  125. but a lot.

  126. Paul describes

  127. in this letter

  128. what some of the people

  129. in Thessalonica

  130. were doing

  131. to the Thessalonian

  132. believers.

  133. They were

  134. persecuting anyone

  135. in Thessalonica

  136. who believed

  137. in Jesus.

  138. They were doing

  139. everything in their power

  140. to stop

  141. the message

  142. about Jesus

  143. from spreading.

  144. and referring

  145. to these opponents.

  146. Paul says

  147. in chapter 2,

  148. verse 16,

  149. in this way,

  150. they always

  151. heap up

  152. their sins

  153. to the limit.

  154. And so,

  155. he says,

  156. right after,

  157. the wrath of God

  158. has come upon them

  159. at last

  160. or

  161. fully.

  162. so,

  163. it's not just

  164. that we've done

  165. a teeny

  166. little bit

  167. of bad stuff

  168. here and there.

  169. These persecutors

  170. in Thessalonica

  171. are an example

  172. of what we are all

  173. naturally

  174. bent towards

  175. because of sin

  176. in us.

  177. Apart from Jesus,

  178. we heap up

  179. our sins

  180. to the limit.

  181. We try to get away

  182. with as much

  183. as we possibly can.

  184. And it's because

  185. of this defiance

  186. and evil

  187. that the wrath

  188. of God

  189. is coming

  190. on the world.

  191. Now,

  192. it's quite common

  193. for us to think

  194. when we hear

  195. that word wrath,

  196. it's quite common

  197. for us to point

  198. a finger at God

  199. and say,

  200. see,

  201. I told you,

  202. God isn't good.

  203. He's not kind.

  204. He's not compassionate.

  205. He's full of wrath.

  206. He's full of anger.

  207. He's mean-spirited.

  208. He's vindictive.

  209. He takes pleasure

  210. in crushing

  211. poor people like us.

  212. Maybe you've heard

  213. people say that.

  214. But as we read

  215. through the Bible,

  216. we begin to see

  217. that this accusation

  218. just isn't true.

  219. God is not mean-spirited.

  220. He's not vindictive.

  221. He doesn't take pleasure

  222. in crushing

  223. poor people like us.

  224. That's what evil men

  225. in our world do.

  226. But God is not like that.

  227. He is a God of wrath.

  228. And He is a God

  229. who gets angry.

  230. But why does He get angry?

  231. Why is He wrathful?

  232. Well, the more we read

  233. the Bible,

  234. the better we see

  235. that for God to be good

  236. and love what is good,

  237. He must also hate

  238. what is evil.

  239. For God to do right,

  240. He must also deal

  241. with those who do wrong.

  242. What kind of God

  243. would He be

  244. if He just did nothing

  245. to those who perpetrate

  246. evil all over the earth?

  247. What kind of God

  248. would He be

  249. if He just let people

  250. do terrible things

  251. to other people

  252. and get away with it?

  253. How long should God

  254. put up with those

  255. who promote evil?

  256. Forever?

  257. For God to be good,

  258. there has to come a day

  259. when He brings the world

  260. to right,

  261. when He rights the wrongs,

  262. when He brings justice

  263. for all the oppressed,

  264. for all those

  265. who have been victims.

  266. there has to be a day

  267. when all who act corruptly

  268. are cleansed

  269. from God's good earth.

  270. God is not angry

  271. because He is mean-spirited.

  272. He is angry

  273. because He sees our sins

  274. and our sinfulness

  275. for what it really is.

  276. Sometimes I think

  277. it's helpful to think

  278. in human terms here.

  279. Have you ever witnessed

  280. somebody do something

  281. hurtful to someone else?

  282. Maybe a bully

  283. on the playground

  284. who's picking on

  285. someone smaller.

  286. Maybe a parent

  287. who is verbally abusive

  288. to their young children.

  289. Maybe somebody

  290. who's going around

  291. and spreading

  292. false rumors

  293. to destroy

  294. another person's reputation.

  295. have you ever

  296. witnessed something

  297. like that

  298. and just felt

  299. the anger

  300. rising up within you?

  301. And you just want

  302. to jump into the fray

  303. and come to that person's defense.

  304. It's in those moments

  305. that I think

  306. it's the closest

  307. we get

  308. as human beings

  309. to having

  310. a righteous

  311. anger.

  312. A good anger.

  313. anger.

  314. We are angry

  315. at the evil

  316. being done

  317. because we see

  318. how it hurts

  319. the people we love.

  320. That's maybe

  321. a picture

  322. a little bit

  323. of what God's

  324. anger is like

  325. towards sin.

  326. He is angry

  327. at the evil

  328. being done

  329. because He sees

  330. how it affects

  331. everything.

  332. He sees

  333. how our sins

  334. hurt the people

  335. around us.

  336. He sees

  337. how our sinful bent

  338. ruins what was

  339. made good

  340. and beautiful

  341. and perfect.

  342. He sees

  343. how our sins

  344. warp

  345. and twist

  346. things

  347. and make them

  348. ugly

  349. and sick.

  350. And so

  351. His anger

  352. about sin

  353. is a righteous

  354. anger.

  355. It is a good

  356. anger

  357. unlike most

  358. of the anger

  359. that we

  360. feel

  361. ourselves.

  362. Where we

  363. might think

  364. of it

  365. this way.

  366. Imagine

  367. that you've

  368. just finished

  369. painting a

  370. masterpiece.

  371. Beautiful

  372. fall scene

  373. of the trees

  374. and all their

  375. colors.

  376. And you

  377. take that

  378. beautiful

  379. painting

  380. off the

  381. easel,

  382. put it

  383. down on

  384. the table

  385. for a

  386. moment

  387. to adjust

  388. your

  389. easel

  390. and somebody

  391. comes by

  392. and they

  393. accidentally

  394. knock over

  395. a jar

  396. of black

  397. ink and

  398. it spills

  399. right over

  400. top of

  401. the whole

  402. painting.

  403. The ink

  404. soaks and

  405. seeps deeply

  406. into the

  407. canvas

  408. and you

  409. look at it

  410. and what

  411. can you do

  412. but just

  413. admit that

  414. there's a

  415. very real

  416. sense in

  417. which this

  418. beautiful

  419. masterpiece

  420. is now

  421. ruined.

  422. It's no

  423. longer

  424. beautiful.

  425. It can't

  426. really be

  427. fixed.

  428. It's no

  429. longer

  430. worthy to

  431. be hung

  432. on the

  433. wall for

  434. display or

  435. given as

  436. a gift.

  437. The good

  438. thing to

  439. do, the

  440. right thing

  441. to do,

  442. is to

  443. throw it

  444. away, to

  445. destroy it,

  446. to start

  447. over fresh

  448. and new.

  449. There is a

  450. sense in

  451. which God's

  452. wrath is

  453. like that

  454. too.

  455. It is that

  456. good part of

  457. him that is

  458. willing to

  459. do what

  460. must be

  461. done at

  462. some point

  463. for the

  464. masterpiece

  465. that he

  466. created,

  467. which was

  468. spoiled by

  469. sin.

  470. And so

  471. there is

  472. coming a

  473. day in

  474. which the

  475. world as

  476. we know

  477. it, the

  478. Bible tells

  479. us, will

  480. be totally

  481. destroyed by

  482. God.

  483. And it

  484. won't be a

  485. mean-spirited

  486. wrath, but a

  487. wrath so

  488. noble and

  489. good that it

  490. will do the

  491. right thing

  492. and do

  493. away with

  494. what is

  495. spoiled.

  496. Thankfully,

  497. that's not

  498. a perfect

  499. analogy because

  500. in the midst

  501. of all

  502. this, there

  503. is this

  504. wonderful

  505. news.

  506. There is a

  507. way to be

  508. saved from

  509. God's wrath,

  510. the coming

  511. wrath of God.

  512. And that way

  513. is through

  514. Jesus, the

  515. rescuer.

  516. He has

  517. come to

  518. rescue us

  519. from the

  520. coming wrath.

  521. He came into

  522. our world.

  523. He lived a

  524. perfect, holy

  525. life.

  526. And in

  527. his death on

  528. the cross, he

  529. received the

  530. wrath of God

  531. on himself.

  532. And it was

  533. all part of a

  534. great exchange,

  535. the Bible tells

  536. us.

  537. For all who

  538. will believe in

  539. his name, he

  540. took our

  541. punishment and

  542. he gave us

  543. his righteousness

  544. so that when

  545. that day of

  546. wrath comes,

  547. God will look

  548. at all who

  549. accepted this

  550. gift and say,

  551. their sin is

  552. paid for.

  553. Someone has

  554. already suffered

  555. on their

  556. behalf the

  557. punishment they

  558. deserve.

  559. Their guilt,

  560. their sin,

  561. it's forgiven.

  562. And we will be

  563. spared and

  564. rescued from

  565. the coming

  566. wrath.

  567. Now all

  568. this talk

  569. about the

  570. day of God's

  571. wrath, it

  572. might get us

  573. thinking, what

  574. is that day

  575. going to look

  576. like?

  577. That's a really

  578. good question.

  579. Some of the

  580. prophets who

  581. came before

  582. Jesus spoke

  583. about that

  584. day.

  585. They called

  586. it the day

  587. of the

  588. Lord.

  589. And if you

  590. look at those

  591. words in your

  592. Old Testament,

  593. in your Bible,

  594. the Lord is

  595. capitalized.

  596. It's actually

  597. his name,

  598. the day of

  599. Yahweh,

  600. the day of

  601. the Lord.

  602. And we see in

  603. the Old Testament

  604. that there have

  605. been several

  606. days called

  607. the day of

  608. the Lord.

  609. And all of

  610. them have this

  611. thing in common.

  612. God on those

  613. days poured out

  614. judgment on a

  615. nation or on

  616. a people because

  617. of their immense

  618. wickedness and

  619. sin.

  620. But we also

  621. see in the midst

  622. of all that,

  623. God telling us

  624. about an

  625. ultimate,

  626. final day

  627. of the

  628. Lord,

  629. where God

  630. will pour

  631. out judgment

  632. on the

  633. whole world

  634. because of

  635. its immense

  636. wickedness

  637. and sin.

  638. The simplest

  639. way to get a

  640. feel for what

  641. the day of

  642. the Lord will

  643. be like is

  644. to just read

  645. through Revelation,

  646. the last book

  647. of the Bible.

  648. In Revelation,

  649. the Apostle

  650. John receives

  651. a vision from

  652. Jesus.

  653. Jesus.

  654. And this

  655. vision has

  656. for centuries

  657. captivated

  658. everybody who

  659. reads it.

  660. The vision

  661. tells a story

  662. of what will

  663. happen at

  664. the end.

  665. It tells of

  666. the moment

  667. when God's

  668. day, the

  669. day of the

  670. Lord, will

  671. break forth

  672. upon the

  673. world.

  674. It begins

  675. around the

  676. end of

  677. chapter 6 and

  678. it goes all

  679. the way through

  680. till chapter

  681. 20.

  682. And while

  683. there's plenty

  684. of debate and

  685. speculation as

  686. to the precise

  687. interpretation of

  688. all the

  689. details of

  690. this vision,

  691. the order in

  692. which it will

  693. happen and

  694. the duration

  695. of that day,

  696. the overall

  697. sense that we

  698. get is that

  699. it will be a

  700. dreadful day

  701. for everyone

  702. on whom God's

  703. wrath falls.

  704. God will send

  705. down in

  706. judgment

  707. plagues,

  708. sickness,

  709. disease,

  710. famine,

  711. scorching

  712. heat,

  713. destruction

  714. of many

  715. of the

  716. good

  717. resources

  718. of the

  719. earth,

  720. natural

  721. disasters

  722. of magnitudes

  723. and frequencies

  724. the likes of

  725. which we've

  726. never seen

  727. before.

  728. There will

  729. be darkness,

  730. violence,

  731. pestilence,

  732. wars,

  733. and death.

  734. And all

  735. of it

  736. deserved

  737. for the

  738. immense

  739. wickedness

  740. and sin

  741. of all

  742. who live

  743. on earth.

  744. To the

  745. believers at

  746. Thessalonica,

  747. Paul actually

  748. wrote about

  749. this coming

  750. wrath.

  751. I'm just

  752. going to

  753. read a

  754. little of

  755. what he

  756. wrote in

  757. chapter 5

  758. of his

  759. letter.

  760. Chapter 5

  761. verse 1,

  762. Paul says

  763. this,

  764. Now brothers

  765. and sisters,

  766. about times

  767. and dates,

  768. we do not

  769. need to

  770. write to

  771. you,

  772. for you

  773. know very

  774. well that

  775. the day

  776. of the

  777. Lord will

  778. come like

  779. a thief

  780. in the

  781. night.

  782. While

  783. people are

  784. saying,

  785. peace and

  786. safety,

  787. destruction

  788. will come

  789. on them

  790. suddenly,

  791. as labor

  792. pains on

  793. a pregnant

  794. woman,

  795. and they

  796. will not

  797. escape.

  798. Paul tells

  799. us here that

  800. the day of

  801. the Lord,

  802. the day of

  803. God's holy

  804. judgment,

  805. will take

  806. our world

  807. by surprise.

  808. He says,

  809. I don't even

  810. need to write

  811. to you about

  812. times and

  813. dates for

  814. this.

  815. That's

  816. perhaps a

  817. word that

  818. we should

  819. all keep

  820. in mind.

  821. God has

  822. not given

  823. us the

  824. times and

  825. the dates

  826. of when

  827. this will

  828. occur,

  829. but what

  830. he does

  831. tell us is

  832. that it

  833. will take

  834. the world

  835. by surprise.

  836. The day of

  837. the Lord will

  838. not be on

  839. the world's

  840. calendar at

  841. all.

  842. They won't

  843. see it

  844. coming.

  845. It will

  846. not be

  847. expected.

  848. It will

  849. catch them

  850. off guard,

  851. just like a

  852. thief catches

  853. somebody off

  854. guard,

  855. a homeowner,

  856. when they

  857. break into

  858. the yard and

  859. steal something

  860. unexpectedly in

  861. the night.

  862. The day of

  863. God's wrath

  864. will come

  865. suddenly,

  866. seemingly out

  867. of nowhere,

  868. just like

  869. contractions

  870. just come

  871. out of

  872. nowhere for

  873. a woman

  874. who is

  875. about to

  876. go into

  877. intense

  878. labor.

  879. Paul even

  880. tells us

  881. that the

  882. saying of

  883. the day,

  884. when this

  885. day comes,

  886. will be

  887. peace and

  888. safety.

  889. Everybody

  890. will be

  891. thinking,

  892. wow,

  893. we've

  894. done it,

  895. this is

  896. good.

  897. And when

  898. it's least

  899. expected,

  900. Paul says,

  901. destruction

  902. will come

  903. upon our

  904. world in

  905. an instant

  906. from God

  907. and people

  908. will not

  909. escape.

  910. But now

  911. listen to

  912. these encouraging

  913. words of

  914. Paul which

  915. follow.

  916. Verse 4,

  917. but you

  918. brothers and

  919. sisters are

  920. not in

  921. darkness so

  922. that this

  923. day should

  924. surprise you

  925. like a

  926. thief.

  927. You are

  928. all children

  929. of the

  930. light and

  931. children of

  932. the day.

  933. We do

  934. not belong

  935. to the

  936. night or

  937. to the

  938. darkness.

  939. So then,

  940. let us not

  941. be like

  942. others who

  943. are asleep,

  944. but let

  945. us be

  946. awake and

  947. sober.

  948. For those

  949. who sleep,

  950. sleep at

  951. night,

  952. and those

  953. who get

  954. drunk,

  955. get drunk

  956. at night.

  957. But since

  958. we belong

  959. to the

  960. day,

  961. let us be

  962. sober,

  963. putting on

  964. faith and

  965. love as

  966. a breastplate

  967. and the

  968. hope of

  969. salvation as

  970. a helmet.

  971. For God

  972. did not

  973. appoint us

  974. to suffer

  975. wrath,

  976. but to

  977. receive

  978. salvation

  979. through our

  980. Lord Jesus

  981. Christ.

  982. Jesus,

  983. who rescues

  984. us from

  985. the coming

  986. wrath.

  987. The world

  988. will be

  989. caught off

  990. guard by

  991. the day of

  992. God's

  993. wrath,

  994. the day

  995. of the

  996. Lord.

  997. But you,

  998. brothers and

  999. sisters,

  1000. need not

  1001. fear.

  1002. You need

  1003. not worry,

  1004. says Paul.

  1005. This day

  1006. is not going

  1007. to surprise

  1008. you like

  1009. a thief

  1010. surprises

  1011. a homeowner.

  1012. For those

  1013. of us who

  1014. are in

  1015. Christ Jesus,

  1016. we're expecting

  1017. something

  1018. different.

  1019. And Paul

  1020. goes into

  1021. metaphors of

  1022. light and

  1023. darkness and

  1024. being asleep

  1025. and awake.

  1026. I'm just

  1027. going to

  1028. skip right

  1029. over that

  1030. down to

  1031. verse 9

  1032. because it's

  1033. here that

  1034. Paul gives

  1035. us the

  1036. clear statement

  1037. of how it

  1038. will turn

  1039. out for

  1040. us when

  1041. that day

  1042. comes.

  1043. For all

  1044. who believe

  1045. in Jesus,

  1046. God did

  1047. not appoint

  1048. us to

  1049. suffer

  1050. wrath,

  1051. but to

  1052. receive

  1053. salvation

  1054. through our

  1055. Lord Jesus

  1056. Christ.

  1057. I love

  1058. these words.

  1059. The terrible

  1060. wrath of

  1061. God that

  1062. the world

  1063. deserves,

  1064. that even

  1065. we deserve

  1066. for our

  1067. sins,

  1068. it will

  1069. not fall

  1070. on us

  1071. if we

  1072. belong to

  1073. Christ.

  1074. God did

  1075. not appoint

  1076. us to

  1077. suffer

  1078. wrath.

  1079. Instead,

  1080. we will

  1081. be saved

  1082. from it.

  1083. He

  1084. appointed

  1085. us to

  1086. receive

  1087. salvation

  1088. through

  1089. our Lord

  1090. Jesus

  1091. Christ.

  1092. And how

  1093. does it

  1094. happen that

  1095. we get a

  1096. pass on

  1097. that coming

  1098. day?

  1099. how does

  1100. it happen

  1101. that we're

  1102. saved from

  1103. going through

  1104. that and

  1105. suffering on

  1106. that day?

  1107. Paul tells

  1108. us in

  1109. verse 10,

  1110. he died

  1111. for us

  1112. so that

  1113. whether we

  1114. are awake

  1115. or asleep,

  1116. we may

  1117. live together

  1118. with him.

  1119. Jesus'

  1120. death

  1121. for us

  1122. is at

  1123. the center

  1124. of our

  1125. salvation.

  1126. It's the

  1127. reason we

  1128. won't have to

  1129. go through

  1130. that.

  1131. It's the

  1132. basis for

  1133. why we

  1134. will not

  1135. be condemned

  1136. with eternal

  1137. fire at the

  1138. final judgment.

  1139. it all

  1140. comes back

  1141. to the

  1142. cross.

  1143. And what

  1144. happened with

  1145. Jesus at

  1146. the cross

  1147. when his

  1148. body was

  1149. broken and

  1150. his blood

  1151. was shed

  1152. for us.

  1153. And I love

  1154. the way that

  1155. Paul says

  1156. it here.

  1157. He says

  1158. he died

  1159. for us so

  1160. that whether

  1161. we are awake

  1162. or asleep,

  1163. he's using

  1164. the metaphor

  1165. whether we

  1166. are dead

  1167. or alive

  1168. before he

  1169. comes,

  1170. he died

  1171. for us

  1172. so that

  1173. we may

  1174. live together

  1175. with him.

  1176. He did

  1177. it so

  1178. that he

  1179. might live

  1180. together

  1181. with you

  1182. and with

  1183. me.

  1184. He wanted

  1185. to have

  1186. that with

  1187. you,

  1188. life with

  1189. you,

  1190. life with

  1191. me.

  1192. It was

  1193. for love

  1194. that he

  1195. died.

  1196. It was

  1197. so that

  1198. we could

  1199. have a

  1200. sweet,

  1201. wonderful

  1202. relationship

  1203. with

  1204. him,

  1205. living

  1206. with

  1207. him

  1208. forever

  1209. that he

  1210. died.

  1211. I don't

  1212. know about

  1213. you,

  1214. but some

  1215. days I

  1216. actually thank

  1217. my wife

  1218. and my

  1219. kids for

  1220. putting up

  1221. with me,

  1222. for bearing

  1223. with me.

  1224. I'm far

  1225. from perfect

  1226. and there

  1227. are days

  1228. that I

  1229. don't even

  1230. like being

  1231. with myself.

  1232. but do

  1233. you know

  1234. that Jesus,

  1235. the Son

  1236. of God

  1237. wants to

  1238. live with

  1239. you?

  1240. Let that

  1241. sink into

  1242. your heart.

  1243. He wants

  1244. to live

  1245. with you

  1246. so much

  1247. that he

  1248. was willing

  1249. to die

  1250. that agonizing

  1251. death on

  1252. the cross.

  1253. that's

  1254. what the

  1255. table that

  1256. we celebrate

  1257. this morning

  1258. is all

  1259. about.

  1260. It's here we

  1261. celebrate

  1262. Jesus who

  1263. saves us

  1264. from the

  1265. coming wrath

  1266. and who

  1267. died for

  1268. us so

  1269. that we

  1270. could live

  1271. together

  1272. with him

  1273. forever.

  1274. So we're

  1275. going to

  1276. take a

  1277. moment of

  1278. quiet now

  1279. and I

  1280. want to

  1281. encourage

  1282. you to

  1283. pray,

  1284. to talk

  1285. to the

  1286. Lord,

  1287. to reflect

  1288. on your

  1289. own sins

  1290. and to

  1291. confess your

  1292. sins to

  1293. God in

  1294. these moments

  1295. and to

  1296. think about

  1297. the love

  1298. of Christ

  1299. for you.

  1300. And after

  1301. we've done

  1302. that for a

  1303. few minutes,

  1304. Charles is

  1305. going to

  1306. come up

  1307. and he's

  1308. going to

  1309. distribute

  1310. the bread.

  1311. Actually,

  1312. we'll have

  1313. Charles and

  1314. Rod come

  1315. up and

  1316. distribute

  1317. the bread

  1318. and the

  1319. cup.

  1320. And if

  1321. you believe

  1322. in Jesus

  1323. and he

  1324. is your

  1325. Lord,

  1326. then I

  1327. want to

  1328. invite you

  1329. to partake

  1330. and join

  1331. with us

  1332. as we

  1333. eat and

  1334. drink from

  1335. this table.

  1336. We'll wait

  1337. until everybody

  1338. has been

  1339. served and

  1340. then we'll

  1341. eat together.

  1342. and

  1343. raise

  1344. in the

  1345. a

  1346. and

  1347. notable

  1348. on

  1349. Amen.

  1350. Amen.

  1351. Amen.

  1352. Amen.

  1353. Amen.

  1354. Amen.

  1355. Amen.

  1356. Amen.

  1357. Amen.

  1358. Amen.

  1359. Amen.

  1360. Amen.

  1361. Amen.

  1362. Amen.

  1363. Amen.

  1364. Let's give thanks.

1365. Lord Jesus, from the bottom of our hearts, we say thank you.

1366. Thank you for suffering as you did to save us.

1367. Thank you that we can have hope and life and joy and a future with you forever because

1368. of what you did on the cross.

  1369. We love you.

  1370. Amen.
