  1. If you have your Bible with you, you can open it up to the Gospel of John, chapter 14.

    John 14 chapter mention

  2. The words will also be on the screen, so you can follow along there.

  3. There's also Bibles in the seats in front of you.

  4. That's the black book.

  5. Some of you have been here through the whole journey that we've been making through the Gospel of John.

  6. Others of you have caught pieces of it, and some of you, this is totally new.

  7. So I'm going to just take a minute to remind you of what's happening in the story here in John, chapter 14.

    John 14 chapter mention

  8. Jesus is in the upper room with his disciples.

  9. It's the evening of his betrayal and arrest.

  10. They've just partaken of the Last Supper together, and Judas, the betrayer, has left the building to put his plan into motion.

  11. And so now Jesus has been telling his disciples what's soon to happen, and he's been giving them words of comfort and offering them hope.

  12. They are troubled.

  13. We'll pick up the conversation in John, chapter 14, verse 25.

    John 14:25

  14. Jesus says,

  15. All this I have spoken while still with you.

  16. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things,

  17. and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

  18. We talked about this a couple weeks ago.

  19. It's as though Jesus is saying, yes, I am going to be leaving you, but there's no need to worry or be anxious.

  20. Everything's taken care of.

  21. You're not going to be left all by yourselves just to figure this out on your own.

  22. God, my Father, will send his Holy Spirit, and he will be to you like I have been to you.

  23. A counselor.

  24. A teacher.

  25. And you won't have to worry about forgetting any of the things that I've said to you,

  26. because when he comes to you, he will remind you of everything that I said.

  27. Jesus goes on in verse 27 and says,

  28. Peace I leave with you.

  29. My peace I give you.

  30. I do not give to you as the world gives.

  31. Do not let your hearts be troubled.

  32. And do not be afraid.

  33. Jesus speaks of giving them peace.

  34. Now, peace can mean many different things depending on the context.

  35. So what kind of peace is Jesus talking about here?

  36. Well, it seems clear enough from the context that he's not talking about the kind of peace between nations,

  37. like a peace treaty,

  38. or the ceasing of hostility or conflict,

  39. like happens in relationships,

  40. the next thing that Jesus says is,

  41. Do not let your hearts be troubled.

  42. And do not be afraid.

  43. And so this context suggests that Jesus is talking about inward peace.

  44. Peace for the heart.

  45. And for the mind.

  46. It's obvious that the disciples are deeply troubled.

  47. And worried.

  48. They're afraid.

  49. As we've talked about before,

  50. Jesus is about to leave them.

  51. And so this is on their minds.

  52. They're also thinking about how they're going to face the hostility of the religious leaders

  53. with Jesus gone.

  54. They're troubled about this.

  55. How is this all going to go?

  56. They have uncertainties.

  57. And it's pretty obvious that they're quite worried about this,

  58. because this is now the second time in the same evening that Jesus has said these very words.

  59. Do not let your hearts be troubled.

  60. He said that right at the beginning in verse 1.

  61. What is it that the disciples need here and now?

  62. This very night as they watch and witness Jesus being torn away from them

  63. and abused and slandered.

  64. What they need is peace of heart.

  65. They need a settled confidence that God is in control.

  66. They need a deep assurance deep in here

  67. that everything is going to go as it should

  68. and that it will turn out for good.

  69. Peace of heart.

  70. Peace of mind.

  71. Now where does that come from?

  72. How do we get that in moments like these?

  73. Jesus tells the disciples that the world offers peace.

  74. He doesn't go into details about what kind of peace the world offers,

  75. but I think we kind of know, we have a sense of that from our own experience,

  76. from our own lives.

  77. The world has its comforts and promises

  78. which are aimed at settling our fears

  79. and quieting the troubles of our hearts.

  80. But the problem with the peace that the world offers

  81. is that it doesn't work.

  82. It doesn't really settle our hearts

  83. and quiet our fears.

  84. When the world's peace comes in the form of entertainment

  85. or experience,

  86. it may distract us from the trouble

  87. or the fear or the worry temporarily.

  88. Or when it comes in the form of a pill

  89. or a drink,

  90. it may alter the hormonal balance in our bodies

  91. and affect how we feel temporarily.

  92. But eventually these forms of peace wear off.

  93. And the deep troubles and fears of the soul are still there.

  94. It's like putting a band-aid on an infectious sore.

  95. Or like sticking our head in the sands,

  96. trying to forget the real troubles that are going on all around us

  97. and pretend for a moment that they're not there.

  98. At other times our world offers peace in the form of a promise.

  99. Maybe you've heard somebody say something like this to you.

  100. Don't worry.

  101. Everything's going to be all right.

  102. The problem with this promise is that it has no basis.

  103. It has no foundation.

  104. How do you know if it's going to be all right?

  105. What does it even mean for things to be all right?

  106. Does it mean that nothing bad is going to happen to me?

  107. Does it mean that you won't go through suffering

  108. or pain or hardship?

  109. And if so, how do you know that?

  110. These promises of peace that the world gives

  111. ring hollow and empty.

  112. And we kind of know that when people say things like this to us,

  113. you know, don't worry.

  114. Everything's going to be all right.

  115. We know that many say it just to make us feel better.

  116. If they really believe that nothing bad is going to happen,

  117. we kind of know that they can't really be sure of that.

  118. They're not in control of all the factors of our lives.

  119. Jesus says,

  120. I do not give you peace like the world gives.

  121. I'm not offering you empty and hollow promises

  122. or just mere wishful thinking,

  123. temporary distractions,

  124. medication to alter your feelings.

  125. Jesus says,

  126. my peace,

  127. I give you.

  128. It's a different kind.

  129. What do you mean, Jesus?

  130. How does Jesus give peace to the men here in this room this night?

  131. Inward peace.

  132. When we hear this,

  133. we might be tempted to kind of fill in the details of the story,

  134. the rest of it with our imaginations.

  135. We imagine maybe Jesus saying,

  136. my peace,

  137. I give you.

  138. And then Jesus went around the room to each person

  139. and laid his hand on their heart.

  140. And there was a glowing flash of light

  141. that emanated from his hand as he did so.

  142. And one by one,

  143. Jesus gave his peace

  144. to each person there in the room.

  145. Is that what John records?

  146. No.

  147. That's not what happened.

  148. The peace of Jesus is not something

  149. that just comes through some magical touch

  150. or through the laying on of hands.

  151. How does Jesus give his peace to them?

  152. How does he give his peace to us?

  153. Where does that settledness of heart

  154. that we long for in the midst of trials come from?

  155. What is it that really silences the whispers

  156. that we hear from our fears?

  157. Jesus' peace comes to them in this way.

  158. He gives it to them

  159. by reminding them of the truth,

  160. by giving them promises

  161. that aren't empty but certain.

  162. And he gives it to them

  163. by reminding them of who really is in control,

  164. of their lives,

  165. of all the factors in the story.

  166. Let's see this as we read what Jesus says next.

  167. Peace I leave with you.

  168. My peace I give you.

  169. I do not give to you as the world gives.

  170. Do not let your hearts be troubled

  171. and do not be afraid.

  172. You heard me say,

  173. I am going away

  174. and I am coming back to you.

  175. Jesus tells them the truth.

  176. We talked about this a couple weeks back.

  177. He said, I am going away

  178. but I am coming back.

  179. Jesus doesn't say,

  180. don't worry, I am not going anywhere.

  181. I am not leaving.

  182. He tells them the truth.

  183. I am leaving.

  184. But with the truth,

  185. he gives them the certain,

  186. the sure promise.

  187. I am going away

  188. but I am coming back.

  189. Don't forget that I said that.

  190. That is the certain truth.

  191. That is the promise

  192. that you can hold on to.

  193. That will silence those lying whispers

  194. rising up inside of you

  195. as you sit there and think,

  196. he is going to abandon us.

  197. Or as you look up and see,

  198. he is dead.

  199. They killed him.

  200. Maybe he wasn't the Messiah after all.

  201. Jesus' peace is given.

  202. It comes through believing his promise

  203. that yes,

  204. he will come back to them.

  205. It is trusting that.

  206. It is embracing that.

  207. That silences the fears

  208. and settles the hearts.

  209. What else does Jesus say here?

  210. He says,

  211. if you loved me,

  212. you would be glad

  213. that I am going to the Father.

  214. For the Father is greater than I.

  215. I have told you now

  216. before it happens

  217. so that when it does happen,

  218. you will believe.

  219. I will not say much more to you.

  220. For the Prince of this world is coming.

  221. He has no hold over me.

  222. But he comes

  223. so that the world may learn

  224. that I love the Father

  225. and do exactly

  226. what my Father has commanded me.

  227. Now there's lots in there

  228. and I know that

  229. some of these words

  230. raise some other questions for us.

  231. But before we get to those,

  232. I just want you to notice

  233. the overall sense

  234. that Jesus gives here

  235. of what's going to happen.

  236. I'm going to the Father,

  237. he says.

  238. And it's a good thing.

  239. It's a right thing.

  240. It's an appropriate thing.

  241. It's something that you can be glad about.

  242. And I'm telling you this now

  243. before it happens

  244. so that when it does happen,

  245. you will believe.

  246. When you see me going to the Father,

  247. you're going to look back

  248. on this conversation.

  249. You're going to see that it happened

  250. just as I told you it would.

  251. So my telling you now,

  252. ahead of time,

  253. I'm doing it on purpose.

  254. I'm trying to give you confidence.

  255. I'm showing you

  256. that you can trust my word,

  257. that I keep my promises.

  258. It's going to help you believe.

  259. And then Jesus goes on

  260. to tell them about

  261. how the prince of this world

  262. is coming.

  263. But he reassures them

  264. that the prince of this world,

  265. he has no hold over me.

  266. In fact,

  267. the prince of this world

  268. is coming

  269. so that

  270. for a divine purpose,

  271. says Jesus,

  272. so that the world

  273. may learn something

  274. about me.

  275. Now just the way

  276. that Jesus

  277. says all this,

  278. it speaks loud

  279. and clear

  280. that God

  281. is in control

  282. of the whole situation.

  283. None of what's about

  284. to happen tonight,

  285. later on in the garden,

  286. or tomorrow,

  287. or in the days ahead

  288. is a surprise to me

  289. or to my father.

  290. says Jesus.

  291. It's all part of the plan.

  292. And it's what's fitting.

  293. It's what's right.

  294. Even the scary part

  295. about this coming prince,

  296. it's not as though

  297. Jesus or the father

  298. will be caught off guard here.

  299. The sense we get

  300. is that this prince

  301. will be permitted

  302. by God to come

  303. and to do what he will

  304. with Jesus

  305. so that the very plan

  306. and purpose of God

  307. will be fulfilled.

  308. So this is another way

  309. that Jesus gives

  310. his kind of peace

  311. to his disciples.

  312. It's kind of implied

  313. in everything

  314. that he says here.

  315. Look,

  316. God is in control.

  317. This is all happening

  318. according to his plan

  319. and his purpose.

  320. He is in control.

  321. He is in control.

  322. He is in control.

  323. He is working out

  324. his plan.

  325. He is going to bring

  326. about something good

  327. through all this.

  328. peace.

  329. This is one of the

  330. big differences

  331. between the peace

  332. that Jesus gives

  333. and the kind of peace

  334. that the world offers.

  335. Jesus doesn't say,

  336. don't worry,

  337. nothing bad

  338. is going to happen.

  339. That's often

  340. the kind of peace

  341. that the world offers.

  342. You know,

  343. be optimistic.

  344. Think positively

  345. and it will come true

  346. for you.

  347. No,

  348. Jesus speaks the truth.

  349. There is something bad.

  350. There is something dark

  351. coming.

  352. The prince of this world

  353. is coming.

  354. That's the devil.

  355. But Jesus' peace comes

  356. when we believe

  357. the truth

  358. that God is in control

  359. and working

  360. even through

  361. the bad stuff

  362. that comes.

  363. it's going to look

  364. for a moment

  365. like the devil

  366. has triumphed

  367. and won.

  368. Jesus,

  369. the son of God,

  370. will be hanging there

  371. dead on the cross.

  372. His body will be lying there

  373. lifeless in the tomb.

  374. But Jesus says,

  375. rest assured,

  376. the coming prince

  377. has no hold

  378. over me.

  379. I love the way

  380. Jesus says this.

  381. Quite literally,

  382. it reads,

  383. on me,

  384. he has nothing.

  385. He comes

  386. to fulfill

  387. God's purpose.

  388. It's almost like

  389. he's saying,

  390. he's just a pawn

  391. the prince

  392. of this world.

  393. In fact,

  394. his coming

  395. is going to glorify

  396. Jesus.

  397. It's going to show

  398. the whole world

  399. just how much

  400. Jesus loves

  401. the father

  402. and how far

  403. the son

  404. is willing

  405. to go

  406. to obey

  407. his father.

  408. It's like

  409. the devil's plan

  410. to take Jesus

  411. out is just

  412. going to backfire

  413. and instead

  414. he's going

  415. to find

  416. that all

  417. along

  418. he's played

  419. the role

  420. of a spotlight

  421. that illuminates

  422. the worthiness

  423. of the true

  424. king

  425. of the world.

  426. So true peace,

  427. it doesn't come

  428. from empty promises

  429. that everything's

  430. going to be okay

  431. or that nothing

  432. bad's going

  433. to happen.

  434. True peace,

  435. the peace

  436. of Jesus

  437. comes when

  438. we believe,

  439. when we

  440. trust Jesus,

  441. when we

  442. trust God.

  443. when we

  444. put our faith

  445. in him

  446. that when

  447. the bad

  448. things happen,

  449. God is at

  450. work for good

  451. through them.

  452. When we

  453. trust that

  454. in the end

  455. he will

  456. triumph,

  457. he will

  458. bring

  459. something

  460. wonderful

  461. out of

  462. the heartache,

  463. the pain,

  464. the loss,

  465. the struggle,

  466. the struggle,

  467. people.

  468. So how

  469. do we

  470. receive this

  471. peace of

  472. Jesus,

  473. this peace

  474. that he

  475. offers?

  476. It's not

  477. a crazy

  478. magical formula,

  479. it's not a

  480. hard thing,

  481. it's not

  482. always easy

  483. to do,

  484. but it is

  485. simple.

  486. We receive

  487. it simply

  488. by believing

  489. the truth

  490. that Jesus

  491. speaks,

  492. the word

  493. of God.

  494. by trusting

  495. the truth

  496. that he

  497. has spoken,

  498. the promises

  499. that he's

  500. given us,

  501. that specific

  502. truth that

  503. God is in

  504. control,

  505. it's when we

  506. believe that,

  507. it's when we

  508. trust that,

  509. that that

  510. unsettledness

  511. melts away.

  512. It can't

  513. stand.

  514. Now one of

  515. the questions

  516. that sometimes

  517. comes up here

  518. in this passage

  519. and I don't

  520. want to skip

  521. over it

  522. completely,

  523. we've been

  524. trying to

  525. work through

  526. and capture

  527. as much

  528. as we can

  529. here in

  530. the gospel

  531. of John,

  532. comes from

  533. verse 28,

  534. Jesus says

  535. this,

  536. I'm going

  537. to the

  538. father for

  539. the father

  540. is greater

  541. than I.

  542. Why does

  543. Jesus say

  544. that the

  545. father is

  546. greater than

  547. him?

  548. Some of you

  549. may have

  550. wondered that

  551. when you get

  552. to this

  553. place.

  554. if Jesus

  555. is God,

  556. isn't he

  557. equal to

  558. the father?

  559. There's been

  560. all kinds of

  561. discussion and

  562. debate over

  563. this back in

  564. the first

  565. centuries of

  566. church history.

  567. People pointed

  568. to this verse

  569. and said,

  570. see,

  571. Jesus wasn't

  572. God.

  573. He even

  574. acknowledged that

  575. God was

  576. greater than

  577. he was.

  578. He was just

  579. a man.

  580. Well,

  581. I'm going to,

  582. I could probably

  583. preach a whole

  584. sermon on this,

  585. but I'm going to

  586. try to condense it

  587. down into a

  588. couple minutes

  589. here,

  590. give you the

  591. short answer.

  592. Jesus was

  593. most certainly

  594. God.

  595. He is the

  596. divine son.

  597. He claimed to

  598. be one with

  599. the father.

  600. We saw that

  601. in John.

  602. He claimed to

  603. have the father

  604. in him and

  605. to himself be

  606. in the father.

  607. We heard that

  608. in John.

  609. He took the

  610. name of God

  611. upon his own

  612. lips.

  613. He said,

  614. before Abraham

  615. was,

  616. I am.

  617. And there

  618. are many other

  619. passages which

  620. point clearly to

  621. the truth that

  622. Jesus is God.

  623. So why does

  624. he,

  625. being God,

  626. claim that the

  627. father is

  628. greater?

  629. In what sense

  630. is the father

  631. greater than

  632. the son?

  633. I can think

  634. of two senses.

  635. Number one,

  636. the father is

  637. greater than

  638. the son with

  639. regard to the

  640. son's humanity.

  641. Jesus was

  642. truly God,

  643. man.

  644. But also,

  645. at the same

  646. time,

  647. he was truly

  648. man,

  649. truly human.

  650. The divine

  651. word,

  652. as we read

  653. back at the

  654. beginning,

  655. took upon

  656. himself a

  657. human nature

  658. and became

  659. a man.

  660. And God

  661. is greater

  662. than man.

  663. God is the

  664. creator.

  665. Man is the

  666. creature.

  667. God is the

  668. ruler of all

  669. and man's

  670. role in all

  671. of that is to

  672. be subservient

  673. to him under

  674. his good

  675. authority.

  676. And so,

  677. with regard to

  678. Jesus'

  679. humanity,

  680. God is

  681. greater than

  682. Jesus.

  683. Maybe you've

  684. read that in

  685. 1 Peter where

  686. it talks about

  687. Jesus,

  688. refers to God

  689. as the God

  690. and father of

  691. our Lord

  692. Jesus.

  693. He is the

  694. God of

  695. Jesus too.

  696. Jesus'

  697. true

  698. humanness

  699. stands in

  700. contrast to

  701. God's divine

  702. nature.

  703. So that's the

  704. first way.

  705. The second

  706. way that the

  707. father is

  708. greater than

  709. Jesus has to

  710. do with the

  711. humble and

  712. lowly role

  713. or state

  714. that Jesus

  715. is in.

  716. It's not

  717. just that

  718. Jesus is

  719. human.

  720. The Bible

  721. tells us that

  722. Christ was in

  723. very nature

  724. God and yet

  725. he chose

  726. to lower

  727. himself,

  728. to humble

  729. himself,

  730. to lay

  731. down or

  732. put aside

  733. some of

  734. his glory.

  735. We'll see in

  736. John 17.

  737. Some of his

  738. divine rights

  739. and privileges.

  740. And so,

  741. even though

  742. Jesus is

  743. equally worthy

  744. of glory,

  745. along with

  746. God the

  747. Father,

  748. he has

  749. taken up

  750. for a time

  751. this lowly

  752. position.

  753. He has

  754. come to

  755. serve the

  756. very ones

  757. that he

  758. created.

  759. And this

  760. position does

  761. not allow

  762. him to

  763. exalt and

  764. glorify

  765. himself.

  766. That's why

  767. we read that

  768. it's the

  769. Father who

  770. must glorify

  771. and exalt

  772. the Son.

  773. It's the

  774. Father who

  775. gives authority

  776. to the

  777. Son.

  778. So,

  779. the Father is

  780. greater than

  781. the Son

  782. with regard to

  783. role or

  784. status for

  785. the time

  786. being.

  787. This is

  788. why Jesus

  789. speaks in

  790. verse 31

  791. of the

  792. Father

  793. commanding

  794. him to

  795. do

  796. things

  797. and of

  798. himself as

  799. obeying

  800. those commands.

  801. Jesus

  802. himself said

  803. it this way

  804. back in

  805. John 13

    John 13:16

  806. verse 16.

  807. He said,

  808. no servant

  809. is greater

  810. than his

  811. master,

  812. nor is a

  813. messenger

  814. greater than

  815. the one

  816. who sent

  817. him.

  818. In other

  819. words,

  820. the master

  821. is greater

  822. than the

  823. servant,

  824. and the

  825. one who

  826. sends the

  827. messenger is

  828. greater than

  829. the messenger.

  830. Well,

  831. we know from

  832. the story of

  833. the Gospels

  834. that Jesus

  835. has come

  836. both to

  837. be the

  838. servant of

  839. his master,

  840. the Father,

  841. and the

  842. messenger of

  843. the one who

  844. has sent

  845. him,

  846. his Father.

  847. So,

  848. these are

  849. two ways

  850. that the

  851. Father is

  852. greater than

  853. Jesus.

  854. And,

  855. you know,

  856. we might be

  857. tempted to

  858. think,

  859. well,

  860. who really

  861. needs to

  862. know this?

  863. Except theologians

  864. and Bible

  865. scholars and

  866. pastors.

  867. This all

  868. sounds kind

  869. of heady and

  870. quite mysterious.

  871. But notice

  872. what Jesus

  873. says right

  874. here in

  875. John chapter

    John 14:31

  876. 14,

  877. verse 31.

  878. He says,

  879. the prince of

  880. this world is

  881. coming so

  882. that the

  883. world may

  884. learn that

  885. I love the

  886. Father and

  887. do exactly

  888. what my

  889. Father has

  890. commanded me.

  891. God wants

  892. not just the

  893. Bible scholars

  894. and theologians,

  895. he wants

  896. the whole

  897. world to

  898. understand this

  899. subservient

  900. role and

  901. relationship that

  902. Jesus has had

  903. with his

  904. Father as a

  905. man.

  906. This is part

  907. of the plan

  908. of God to

  909. bring glory

  910. to his

  911. son Jesus.

  912. It may not

  913. be fully

  914. apparent now

  915. how that will

  916. all work,

  917. but one day

  918. it will be.

  919. He wants the

  920. whole world to

  921. see this

  922. about Jesus,

  923. that Jesus

  924. in both

  925. his deity

  926. and in

  927. his humanity

  928. is worthy

  929. of glory

  930. and honor

  931. and praise,

  932. is worthy

  933. to be exalted,

  934. is worthy

  935. to wear the

  936. crown and

  937. be the king

  938. of the whole

  939. world over

  940. all the

  941. nations.

  942. So yes,

  943. the Father is

  944. greater than

  945. Jesus,

  946. and no,

  947. it doesn't

  948. diminish his

  949. divinity.

  950. humanity,

  951. it's just

  952. the reality

  953. of his

  954. true humanity

  955. and his

  956. humble role

  957. and service

  958. that he has

  959. come to

  960. offer.

  961. So what

  962. can we take

  963. from all

  964. this part

  965. of the story

  966. here in

  967. John for

  968. ourselves

  969. today?

  970. Well, I

  971. want to come

  972. back to the

  973. talk of

  974. peace.

  975. Maybe you

  976. are going

  977. through something

  978. right now.

  979. in your

  980. life where

  981. you can

  982. honestly say,

  983. I feel

  984. troubled in

  985. heart,

  986. or I'm

  987. afraid,

  988. or I'm

  989. worried about

  990. something,

  991. struggling.

  992. Maybe you've

  993. been wrestling

  994. in your

  995. heart,

  996. not just a

  997. little bit,

  998. but for a

  999. while.

  1000. Maybe you've

  1001. been looking

  1002. for that

  1003. inward peace

  1004. that Jesus

  1005. offers here

  1006. to his

  1007. disciples.

  1008. A true

  1009. peace that

  1010. will just

  1011. settle it.

  1012. Maybe you've

  1013. been trying

  1014. some of the

  1015. world's offers

  1016. of peace,

  1017. and you've

  1018. been finding

  1019. that they are

  1020. empty,

  1021. and they don't

  1022. last,

  1023. they don't

  1024. deliver on

  1025. what they

  1026. promise.

  1027. whatever it

  1028. is that

  1029. you're going

  1030. through today,

  1031. Jesus

  1032. offers you

  1033. his peace.

  1034. How do we

  1035. receive that?

  1036. believe.

  1037. Believe.

  1038. Trust him.

  1039. Look again

  1040. on his

  1041. words.

  1042. Look again

  1043. at his

  1044. promises.

  1045. promises.

  1046. It's there

  1047. that we

  1048. find our

  1049. hearts truly

  1050. settle, and

  1051. fears dissipate.

  1052. When we see

  1053. again that God

  1054. is in control,

  1055. that he has a

  1056. plan, that he's

  1057. going to bring

  1058. good, that the

  1059. end of this

  1060. story is triumph,

  1061. for Jesus and

  1062. his people.

  1063. Let me remind

  1064. you of that.

  1065. Same thing

  1066. that Jesus

  1067. said to his

  1068. disciples.

  1069. Jesus is

  1070. coming back.

  1071. And again,

  1072. there will be a

  1073. showdown between

  1074. the prince of

  1075. this world and

  1076. the Lord Jesus.

  1077. And again,

  1078. it will be seen

  1079. that the

  1080. prince of this

  1081. world has no

  1082. hold over

  1083. Jesus.

  1084. With these

  1085. things in view,

  1086. let me encourage

  1087. you with whatever

  1088. you're going

  1089. through, do

  1090. not let your

  1091. hearts be

  1092. troubled.

  1093. Do not be

  1094. afraid.

  1095. lastly, I want

  1096. to point you to

  1097. one thing that

  1098. we notice about

  1099. Jesus here that

  1100. really blessed me

  1101. this week.

  1102. You know, it's

  1103. easy for us to

  1104. think of Jesus as

  1105. the commanding

  1106. king.

  1107. Just like we

  1108. read back up in

  1109. verse 15, if you

  1110. love me, keep my

  1111. commands.

  1112. And Jesus is a

  1113. commanding king.

  1114. But do you see

  1115. in these verses

  1116. just how tender

  1117. and gentle

  1118. and sensitive

  1119. Jesus is

  1120. towards his

  1121. disciples?

  1122. He doesn't beat

  1123. them down.

  1124. He doesn't say,

  1125. just stop worrying

  1126. already.

  1127. Enough.

  1128. Get over it.

  1129. He's gentle.

  1130. He's tender.

  1131. He sees their

  1132. state of mind,

  1133. their state of

  1134. heart, and he

  1135. calls them out of

  1136. it to trust, to

  1137. believe.

  1138. He wants them to

  1139. have peace in

  1140. their hearts.

  1141. I mean, think

  1142. about that.

  1143. Jesus cares about

  1144. how you feel.

  1145. that matters to

  1146. him.

  1147. He's not just a

  1148. commanding king.

  1149. He is also a

  1150. sympathetic brother.

  1151. He knows our

  1152. weakness, our

  1153. frailty.

  1154. He sees those

  1155. worries and fears

  1156. that we carry.

  1157. And he has the

  1158. antidote.

  1159. He has what we

  1160. long for.

  1161. true, lasting,

  1162. inward peace.

  1163. So come to

  1164. him and find

  1165. that in him.

  1166. Let's pray.

  1167. Father in heaven, we

  1168. bow before you and

  1169. we offer up our

  1170. hearts to you.

  1171. We offer up the

  1172. struggles.

  1173. We offer up the

  1174. worries.

  1175. peace.

  1176. We ask that you

  1177. would come deep

  1178. into our hearts

  1179. and give us

  1180. peace.

  1181. Remind us of the

  1182. specific truths,

  1183. each one of us,

  1184. that we need to

  1185. know from you

  1186. today.

  1187. Thank you that you

  1188. are a wonderful and

  1189. compassionate Savior.

  1190. thank you for dying

  1191. on the cross for

  1192. us, for taking

  1193. care of all of

  1194. our sin and our

  1195. guilt, and that

1196. one day we get to

  1197. look forward to

  1198. your glorious

  1199. kingdom and life

  1200. with you and with

  1201. each other forever.

1202. To your name be the

  1203. glory.

  1204. Amen.
