  1. All right, well, we're continuing on this morning

  2. with the teaching of Jesus in John chapter 15.

    John 15 chapter mention

  3. This morning's message is a part two

  4. flowing out of what we talked about last Sunday.

  5. If you missed last Sunday,

  6. you can listen to the sermon audio online

  7. on our website under sermons.

  8. So I'm just gonna read John chapter 15,

    John 15 chapter mention

  9. verse one to six again,

  10. and then just quickly recap the main things

  11. that we talked about last Sunday.

  12. And then we'll move on to explore this passage

  13. a little deeper.

  14. So this is Jesus talking in John chapter 15.

    John 15 chapter mention

  15. I am the true vine,

  16. and my Father is the gardener.

  17. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit,

  18. while every branch that does bear fruit,

  19. He prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.

  20. You are already clean

  21. because of the word I have spoken to you.

  22. Remain in me

  23. as I also remain in you.

  24. No branch can bear fruit by itself.

  25. It must remain in the vine.

  26. Neither can you bear fruit

  27. unless you remain in me.

  28. I am the vine.

  29. You are the branches.

  30. If you remain in me

  31. and I in you,

  32. you will bear much fruit.

  33. Apart from me,

  34. you can do nothing.

  35. If you do not remain in me,

  36. you are like a branch that is thrown away

  37. and withers.

  38. Such branches are picked up,

  39. thrown into the fire,

  40. and burned.

  41. So we talked about how God is the gardener last Sunday.

  42. God is at work,

  43. like a gardener is at work,

  44. to bring about a fruitful vineyard,

  45. a people full of good fruit.

  46. And we talked a little about

  47. what good fruit means last Sunday.

  48. It means things like righteousness,

  49. justice,

  50. love,

  51. compassion,

  52. honesty,

  53. peace,

  54. and so on.

  55. And these things stand in contrast

  56. to the bad fruit,

  57. injustice,

  58. oppression,

  59. deceitfulness,

  60. bloodshed,

  61. greed,

  62. and so on.

  63. And we talked about

  64. how Jesus is the true vine.

  65. We looked at a couple places

  66. where God spoke about

  67. the people of Israel

  68. in the past,

  69. in the Old Testament,

  70. with the metaphor of

  71. vineyard,

  72. and vines,

  73. and fruit.

  74. And we saw how Jesus

  75. stands out.

  76. Up until now,

  77. the vineyard God has planted

  78. has,

  79. on the whole,

  80. brought forth

  81. bad fruit.

  82. fruit.

  83. And it had to do

  84. with the people themselves

  85. who were sinners

  86. just like us.

  87. But now,

  88. God has planted

  89. the true vine,

  90. Jesus,

  91. into his vineyard.

  92. And he is the true

  93. source of life

  94. and of all that is good.

  95. God has planted

  96. the true vineyard.

  97. And we talked a little

  98. about how

  99. we are the branches,

  100. those of us

  101. who believe in Jesus.

  102. We talked about

  103. how branches

  104. are secondary shoots

  105. coming off

  106. the primary shoot.

  107. And I encourage us

  108. to think about

  109. whether we have that

  110. straight in our hearts

  111. and minds.

  112. And finally,

  113. we talked about

  114. our utter need

  115. to remain in Jesus,

  116. to abide in him,

  117. which means

  118. to stay closely

  119. connected to him,

  120. walking in close

  121. relationship with him.

  122. So now we want

  123. to continue meditating

  124. on these words

  125. of Jesus.

  126. Let's come back

  127. to what we talked

  128. about last Sunday,

  129. that God is the gardener

  130. at work,

  131. tending

  132. and pruning.

  133. we see this

  134. in verse

  135. chapter 2.

  136. We see this

  137. in verse 2.

  138. He cuts off

  139. every branch

  140. in me,

  141. that's the gardener,

  142. he cuts off

  143. every branch

  144. in me

  145. that bears no fruit,

  146. while every branch

  147. that does bear fruit

  148. he prunes

  149. so that it will be

  150. even more fruitful.

  151. As I said

  152. last Sunday,

  153. Jesus wants us

  154. to come to terms

  155. with the mindset

  156. of God,

  157. the gardener.

  158. Just like when I go

  159. to all the work

  160. of planting plants

  161. in my garden

  162. and tending them,

  163. like some of you

  164. did this past summer,

  165. what do I want

  166. from those plants

  167. after all that work?

  168. Well,

  169. I want as much

  170. delicious fruit

  171. as possible.

  172. God has that

  173. same mindset

  174. toward us,

  175. he wants to see

  176. as much good fruit

  177. as possible

  178. come from our lives.

  179. Now,

  180. we have to be careful

  181. here

  182. that we don't

  183. misunderstand Jesus.

  184. Jesus is not saying

  185. that we need to do

  186. enough good works

  187. in order to be saved.

  188. The Bible is clear

  189. on this.

  190. We are saved

  191. and we are joined

  192. to Christ

  193. by faith,

  194. by believing in him

  195. and not because

  196. of good works.

  197. God's saving

  198. love comes to us

  199. while we are

  200. still sinners,

  201. still guilty,

  202. still people

  203. who have sin

  204. and do sin.

  205. But then once

  206. we are joined

  207. to Christ,

  208. we begin to

  209. grow like

  210. a branch

  211. of a plant

  212. grows.

  213. we begin

  214. to change

  215. as we drink

  216. from the nourishing

  217. sap of the vine.

  218. We are now

  219. connected to the

  220. source of all

  221. life

  222. and of all

  223. goodness.

  224. And now

  225. because of that

  226. connection to Christ,

  227. we become

  228. able

  229. to bear

  230. good fruit.

  231. and God,

  232. like a gardener,

  233. begins to work

  234. on us

  235. and in us

  236. and through us

  237. by the power

  238. of his Holy Spirit.

  239. And good things

  240. begin to come

  241. out of us

  242. like never before.

  243. Our overall

  244. mindset

  245. and attitude

  246. begins to change

  247. from living

  248. for myself,

  249. for my own

  250. pleasure,

  251. to now

  252. living for you,

  253. Jesus,

  254. for your

  255. pleasure.

  256. We begin

  257. to pray

  258. more and more

  259. that same

  260. prayer that

  261. Jesus prayed.

  262. Not my

  263. will,

  264. not what I

  265. want,

  266. but your

  267. will,

  268. what you

  269. want,

  270. be done,

  271. Father.

  272. We begin

  273. to let go

  274. of that

  275. impulse that

  276. we had

  277. to store

  278. up for

  279. ourselves

  280. treasures

  281. here on

  282. earth

  283. and instead

  284. begin to

  285. store up

  286. for ourselves

  287. treasures

  288. in heaven.

  289. We begin

  290. to let go

  291. of that

  292. desire

  293. to get

  294. more and

  295. more,

  296. to establish

  297. our own

  298. little kingdom

  299. here on

  300. earth,

  301. and instead

  302. we desire

  303. to see

  304. God's

  305. kingdom

  306. established.

  307. Once we

  308. are joined

  309. to Christ,

  310. good fruit

  311. begins to

  312. grow.

  313. But here's

  314. the truth

  315. that we see

  316. coming out

  317. of Jesus'

  318. words here.

  319. God doesn't

  320. just sit

  321. back and

  322. watch this

  323. happen.

  324. Now some

  325. people do

  326. their garden

  327. in that

  328. way.

  329. They plant

  330. the seeds

  331. in the

  332. ground,

  333. they give

  334. it one

  335. good soaking,

  336. and then

  337. they just

  338. leave it.

  339. From then

  340. on, if it

  341. rains, it

  342. rains.

  343. If a late

  344. frost comes,

  345. it comes.

  346. If the

  347. plant shoot

  348. is about

  349. to snap

  350. off without

  351. some kind

  352. of supporting

  353. stake or

  354. cage,

  355. oh well.

  356. We might

  357. call this

  358. passive

  359. gardening,

  360. or hands-off

  361. gardening.

  362. And as it

  363. usually goes,

  364. the hands-off

  365. gardener gets

  366. from their

  367. plants what

  368. they put

  369. in, often

  370. a meager

  371. harvest.

  372. But God

  373. is not like

  374. that with

  375. us.

  376. He is

  377. an active

  378. gardener,

  379. says Jesus

  380. here in

  381. verse 2.

  382. He is

  383. hands-on.

  384. He is

  385. pruning

  386. and tending

  387. because he

  388. is not

  389. content for

  390. a meager

  391. harvest from

  392. our lives.

  393. Let me

  394. say that

  395. again.

  396. God is

  397. not content

  398. for a

  399. meager

  400. harvest

  401. from our

  402. lives.

  403. He wants

  404. much fruit,

  405. much good

  406. fruit.

  407. Let's fast

  408. forward for

  409. just a second

  410. to verse

  411. 8.

  412. Verse 8,

  413. Jesus says,

  414. this is to

  415. my Father's

  416. glory,

  417. that you

  418. bear much

  419. fruit,

  420. showing

  421. yourselves

  422. to be

  423. my disciples.

  424. So,

  425. what brings

  426. glory to

  427. God the

  428. Father?

  429. That you,

  430. that I,

  431. bear much

  432. fruit,

  433. fruit,

  434. not that

  435. you and

  436. I bear

  437. slim pickings,

  438. but that

  439. we bear

  440. much fruit.

  441. What brings

  442. glory to

  443. God the

  444. Father?

  445. That you

  446. and I

  447. show

  448. ourselves

  449. to be

  450. a disciple

  451. of Jesus,

  452. that we

  453. make it so

  454. obvious to

  455. the world

  456. that we are

  457. joined to

  458. him by

  459. our lives,

  460. by our

  461. many good

  462. words,

  463. by our

  464. many good

  465. actions,

  466. by our

  467. many good

  468. attitudes.

  469. And now

  470. the wonderful

  471. truth here

  472. in verse 2

  473. is that we

  474. are not

  475. left all

  476. by ourselves

  477. to do this,

  478. to make this

  479. change in

  480. ourselves

  481. happen,

  482. to bear much

  483. good fruit

  484. for God.

  485. Jesus says

  486. here in

  487. verse 2

  488. that God

  489. himself is

  490. at work

  491. on us,

  492. on each

  493. branch of

  494. the vine

  495. to ensure

  496. that our

  497. fruitfulness

  498. increases,

  499. that the

  500. good coming

  501. from our

  502. lives

  503. grows.

  504. And so

  505. this is why

  506. I often

  507. cringe inside

  508. when I hear

  509. people say

  510. things like,

  511. you know,

  512. it's good to

  513. be religious,

  514. it's good to

  515. believe in

  516. Jesus,

  517. so long as

  518. you don't

  519. get carried

  520. away with

  521. it,

  522. so long as

  523. you don't

  524. become too

  525. religious.

  526. Sometimes we

  527. here in the

  528. church are

  529. even tempted

  530. to have the

  531. same mentality.

  532. Let Christ

  533. have a place

  534. in your life,

  535. but don't let

  536. him take over

  537. your whole

  538. life.

  539. That mentality

  540. is the

  541. complete opposite

  542. of what God

  543. desires for

  544. his people,

  545. for those

  546. who are

  547. joined to

  548. Christ.

  549. If we're

  550. trying to be

  551. content with

  552. just bare

  553. minimum fruit

  554. in our

  555. lives,

  556. bare minimum

  557. Christianity,

  558. bare minimum

  559. obedience to

  560. Christ,

  561. bare minimum

  562. Bible reading,

  563. bare minimum

  564. prayer,

  565. bare minimum

  566. fellowship,

  567. bare minimum

  568. church involvement,

  569. if we're trying

  570. to be content

  571. with bare

  572. minimum

  573. Christianity,

  574. we are

  575. completely at

  576. odds with

  577. what God

  578. is looking

  579. for and

  580. working toward

  581. in our

  582. lives.

  583. He doesn't

  584. want bare

  585. minimum fruit.

  586. He wants

  587. much fruit.

  588. Think about

  589. this.

  590. Whenever you

  591. feel that

  592. temptation,

  593. and we all

  594. feel it,

  595. to do bare

  596. minimum

  597. Christianity,

  598. know this.

  599. God wants

  600. the exact

  601. opposite for

  602. you,

  603. and he is

  604. going to work

  605. on you.

  606. He is

  607. going to

  608. work in

  609. you,

  610. he's going

  611. to work

  612. around you

  613. to make

  614. you more

  615. fruitful.

  616. He's going

  617. to bring

  618. his pruning

  619. cheers to

  620. bear on

  621. you.

  622. Well,

  623. that doesn't

  624. sound good,

  625. that sounds

  626. kind of

  627. scary,

  628. but deep

  629. down inside,

  630. we know

  631. it's good.

  632. I mean,

  633. what kind

  634. of person

  635. do you

  636. want to

  637. be?

  638. Do you

  639. want to

  640. be like

  641. the Lord

  642. Jesus?

  643. Loving,

  644. compassionate,

  645. doing what's

  646. right,

  647. joyful?

  648. Do you

  649. want your

  650. life to

  651. be full

  652. of that?

  653. Or do

  654. you want

  655. to be like

  656. everyone else

  657. in the world,

  658. where it's

  659. just all

  660. about me,

  661. selfish,

  662. stubborn,

  663. greedy,

  664. often miserable,

  665. doing whatever

  666. I want and

  667. whatever I feel

  668. like?

  669. hear this,

  670. God's

  671. pruning

  672. comes,

  673. not because

  674. he's harsh,

  675. not because

  676. he's just

  677. utilitarian,

  678. not because

  679. he's like

  680. that commercial

  681. grower that

  682. only cares

  683. about the

  684. profitability

  685. of the

  686. plant,

  687. no,

  688. God's

  689. pruning

  690. comes because

  691. he is

  692. good,

  693. because he

  694. is loving,

  695. because he

  696. is kind,

  697. because he

  698. wants from

  699. us what

  700. is what's

  701. actually best

  702. for us,

  703. what someday

  704. we'll realize

  705. is what we

  706. really wanted

  707. and needed

  708. all along

  709. in our

  710. lives.

  711. God's

  712. pruning

  713. makes the

  714. difference

  715. between us

  716. getting to

  717. the end

  718. of our

  719. lives

  720. and being

  721. filled with

  722. regret

  723. at a

  724. wasted

  725. life

  726. as we

  727. watch

  728. everything

  729. slip away

  730. from us,

  731. realizing

  732. that it

  733. doesn't

  734. last,

  735. that we

  736. didn't do

  737. anything

  738. for the

  739. life to

  740. come.

  741. God's

  742. pruning

  743. makes a

  744. difference

  745. between

  746. that

  747. and us

  748. being able

  749. to look

  750. back

  751. and see

  752. that our

  753. lives

  754. made a

  755. real

  756. lasting

  757. difference

  758. for

  759. eternity.

  760. So let's

  761. talk about

  762. pruning.

  763. When it

  764. comes to

  765. ordinary

  766. plants,

  767. there are

  768. different kinds

  769. of pruning.

  770. Probably the

  771. one that

  772. most of

  773. us have

  774. done or

  775. are most

  776. familiar with

  777. is like

  778. the kind

  779. we do

  780. when we

  781. prune the

  782. hedge or

  783. when we

  784. prune the

  785. bush.

  786. We do

  787. it so that

  788. it has a

  789. nice shape

  790. and so that

  791. it looks

  792. good so

  793. it's not

  794. all gangly

  795. and straggly.

  796. That's not

  797. the kind of

  798. pruning that

  799. Jesus is

  800. talking about

  801. here.

  802. He says

  803. that the

  804. kind of

  805. pruning

  806. God does

  807. is for a

  808. very specific

  809. purpose.

  810. It's to

  811. maximize

  812. fruit production

  813. on each

  814. and every

  815. branch.

  816. Every branch

  817. that does

  818. bear fruit

  819. he prunes

  820. so that

  821. it will

  822. be even

  823. more

  824. fruitful.

  825. So we

  826. might wonder

  827. how does

  828. pruning

  829. lead to

  830. more fruit?

  831. Well I'm

  832. going to be

  833. honest with

  834. you.

  835. I'm not a

  836. plant scientist

  837. or an

  838. expert on

  839. plants but

  840. the gist

  841. of it is

  842. something like

  843. this.

  844. As a

  845. plant grows

  846. it will

  847. often put

  848. energy and

  849. resources into

  850. other smaller

  851. branches and

  852. leaves that

  853. are not

  854. necessary for

  855. fruit.

  856. It's a

  857. plant.

  858. Being a

  859. plant it

  860. doesn't have

  861. a mind.

  862. It just

  863. kind of does

  864. what plants

  865. do.

  866. It's not

  867. thinking about

  868. maximizing the

  869. fruit.

  870. It's just

  871. following the

  872. programming that's

  873. inside of it

  874. for the kind

  875. of organism

  876. that God

  877. made it to

  878. be.

  879. It's like

  880. a complex

  881. living

  882. automated

  883. machine and

  884. it just

  885. kind of

  886. unfolds and

  887. does what

  888. it does.

  889. But then

  890. when you

  891. introduce an

  892. intelligent

  893. mind, a

  894. gardener, into

  895. the picture, a

  896. gardener can

  897. take this

  898. automated

  899. living

  900. machine and

  901. tweak it and

  902. make changes to

  903. it and tune

  904. it so that

  905. this machine is

  906. more beneficial,

  907. produces more

  908. fruit.

  909. That's the

  910. kind of pruning

  911. that God

  912. does on

  913. us.

  914. If the

  915. goal is

  916. maximum

  917. fruit, then

  918. not every

  919. little branch,

  920. not every

  921. little leaf is

  922. needed on

  923. the plant.

  924. In

  925. unscientific

  926. terms, some

  927. of the

  928. plant's energy

  929. and resources

  930. are going

  931. towards more

  932. green growth

  933. rather than

  934. fruit.

  935. But there's a

  936. way to channel

  937. more of the

  938. plant's energy

  939. and resources

  940. into the

  941. production of

  942. fruit.

  943. How?

  944. By cutting

  945. off those

  946. smaller branches

  947. and leaves

  948. that are not

  949. needed for

  950. fruit production.

  951. According to

  952. Jesus, this is

  953. the kind of

  954. pruning that

  955. God is doing

  956. for his

  957. people.

  958. He wants

  959. much fruit

  960. and so he

  961. is cleaning

  962. off from

  963. each branch

  964. the unnecessary

  965. shoots and

  966. leaves.

  967. at the

  968. least, this

  969. means that

  970. God is at

  971. work on

  972. us and

  973. in us,

  974. making

  975. changes to

  976. our lives.

  977. Now, I

  978. would have

  979. loved to have

  980. been there

  981. with the

  982. disciples and

  983. Jesus and

  984. probably at

  985. this point

  986. just put up

  987. my hand and

  988. ask the

  989. question,

  990. so Jesus,

  991. what exactly

  992. does the

  993. pruning of

  994. God look

  995. like in

  996. our lives?

  997. What kind

  998. of changes

  999. does he

  1000. make so

  1001. that we

  1002. bring more

  1003. fruit?

  1004. But since I

  1005. wasn't there,

  1006. we're left to

  1007. kind of take a

  1008. guess at how

  1009. God prunes

  1010. his people.

  1011. It doesn't say

  1012. right here in

  1013. the passage.

  1014. And I see

  1015. two different

  1016. ways that God

  1017. prunes his

  1018. people.

  1019. The first way

  1020. is the way

  1021. that most of

  1022. us, most

  1023. teachers, most

  1024. pastors probably

  1025. think of first.

  1026. And the second

  1027. way is in

  1028. verse 3.

  1029. So let's

  1030. start with the

  1031. first way that

  1032. God prunes

  1033. his people.

  1034. Most Christians

  1035. look at this

  1036. and agree that

  1037. God prunes his

  1038. people by his

  1039. sovereign work

  1040. in them, on

  1041. them, and

  1042. around them.

  1043. Now what do I

  1044. mean by that?

  1045. Let me give you

  1046. some examples.

  1047. Just like with

  1048. a branch of a

  1049. plant, God

  1050. sometimes removes

  1051. and strips off

  1052. unnecessary things.

  1053. from our

  1054. lives.

  1055. Maybe he sees

  1056. that our energy

  1057. and our resources

  1058. are going towards

  1059. this and that

  1060. and this way

  1061. and that way

  1062. instead of toward

  1063. producing fruit.

  1064. And so

  1065. sometimes he

  1066. takes away

  1067. things that

  1068. would become a

  1069. hindrance or a

  1070. distraction for

  1071. us.

  1072. Sometimes he

  1073. closes the door

  1074. on an opportunity

  1075. that we'd only be

  1076. taking for earthly

  1077. gain, for

  1078. ourselves, for

  1079. our own benefit.

  1080. there was a

  1081. young man who

  1082. loved to play

  1083. high school

  1084. football and

  1085. football became

  1086. the most important

  1087. thing in his

  1088. life.

  1089. Jesus was

  1090. secondary.

  1091. One day when he

  1092. was playing, he

  1093. was badly

  1094. injured.

  1095. It was bad

  1096. enough that he

  1097. would not be able

  1098. to play competitively

  1099. again.

  1100. Yet in the midst

  1101. of his crushed

  1102. ambitions, God

  1103. was at work in

  1104. his life, drawing

  1105. his heart closer,

  1106. closer to

  1107. relationship with

  1108. him.

  1109. And this young

  1110. man gave himself

  1111. more fully, more

  1112. deeply to Jesus

  1113. and to following

  1114. him.

  1115. He had a totally

  1116. different path than

  1117. he thought he would

  1118. go on.

  1119. He ended up serving

  1120. the Lord in all

  1121. kinds of wonderful

  1122. ways, directing a

  1123. Bible camp, serving

  1124. as a pastor.

  1125. just like when you

  1126. prune a branch on

  1127. a plant.

  1128. It forever changes

  1129. the direction of

  1130. the growth.

  1131. I know another

  1132. young man who

  1133. deeply longed to

  1134. be married, but

  1135. after his first

  1136. relationship didn't

  1137. work out, he was

  1138. crushed.

  1139. God used that

  1140. also in the same

  1141. similar sort of

  1142. way to draw his

  1143. heart closer, to

  1144. get his attention, to

  1145. make him into a

  1146. compassionate young

  1147. man.

  1148. Then he started

  1149. dating another gal

  1150. and that didn't

  1151. work out either.

  1152. Then he started

  1153. dating a third

  1154. young lady and by

  1155. that time he longed

  1156. so much to be

  1157. married that he

  1158. would have married

  1159. her if she would

  1160. have had him, but

  1161. then all of a

  1162. sudden she broke

  1163. up with him.

  1164. Finally, he tried

  1165. one last time with

  1166. a fourth young lady

  1167. and this time it

  1168. all worked out.

  1169. And to this day

  1170. this individual would

  1171. tell you that he

  1172. is so glad God

  1173. didn't let him

  1174. marry any of the

  1175. first three girls

  1176. because the wife

  1177. that he has now

  1178. he recognizes is

  1179. the perfect companion

  1180. for him and for

  1181. the kind of ministry

  1182. that they're doing

  1183. together.

  1184. Just like with a

  1185. plant, we sometimes

  1186. don't know what

  1187. changes need to be

1188. made in our lives to

  1189. bring more good

  1190. fruit.

  1191. Truly, only God

  1192. the gardener knows

  1193. what's best for each

  1194. one of us.

  1195. Think about this.

  1196. If we were in

  1197. charge of writing our

  1198. own life story from

  1199. beginning to end,

  1200. we probably, most of

  1201. us, wouldn't include

  1202. any of those pruning

  1203. kinds of things.

  1204. Things that are

  1205. painful.

  1206. injuries,

  1207. sicknesses,

  1208. loss,

  1209. hardships,

  1210. failures,

  1211. broken relationships.

  1212. Maybe you're going

  1213. through some of those

  1214. things right now.

1215. But could it be that

  1216. the very trouble in

  1217. your life that you're

  1218. facing is the pruning

  1219. work of God?

  1220. God working on you

  1221. and in you,

  1222. in his love,

1223. to set you up to

  1224. bear more good

  1225. fruit in your life

  1226. for higher joys

  1227. than you ever thought

  1228. possible.

  1229. Does God do this

  1230. sort of thing?

  1231. There are other

  1232. passages of

  1233. scripture that tell

  1234. us yes.

  1235. The author of

  1236. Hebrews is likely

  1237. talking about the

  1238. same sort of thing

  1239. with a different

  1240. metaphor,

  1241. with that of the

  1242. father-child relationship

  1243. and discipline.

  1244. This is what he

  1245. says in Hebrews

    Hebrews 12:5

  1246. chapter 12,

  1247. verse 5.

  1248. He says,

  1249. have you completely

  1250. forgotten this word

  1251. of encouragement

  1252. that addresses you

  1253. as a father

  1254. addresses his son?

  1255. It says,

  1256. my son,

  1257. do not make light

  1258. of the Lord's

  1259. discipline.

  1260. And do not lose

  1261. heart when he

  1262. rebukes you because

  1263. the Lord disciplines

  1264. the one he loves.

  1265. And he chastens

  1266. everyone he

  1267. accepts as his

  1268. son.

  1269. Endure hardship

  1270. as discipline.

  1271. God is treating

  1272. you as his

  1273. children.

  1274. For what children

  1275. are not disciplined

  1276. by their father?

  1277. And if we skip

  1278. down to verse 10,

  1279. they are earthly

  1280. fathers,

  1281. disciplined us for

  1282. a little while as

  1283. they thought best.

  1284. God disciplines us

  1285. for our good

  1286. in order that we

  1287. may share in

  1288. his holiness.

  1289. No discipline

  1290. seems pleasant

  1291. at the time,

  1292. but painful.

  1293. Later on,

  1294. however,

  1295. it produces a

  1296. harvest of

  1297. righteousness

  1298. and peace

  1299. for those who

  1300. have been trained

  1301. by it.

  1302. It's a similar

  1303. sort of idea.

  1304. God uses things

  1305. that are difficult

  1306. and painful

  1307. hardship

  1308. to bring

  1309. loving correction

  1310. for our good,

  1311. for our benefit,

  1312. so that there

  1313. will be a harvest,

  1314. so that there

  1315. will be fruit

  1316. that comes from

  1317. our lives,

  1318. that we may share

  1319. in his holiness.

  1320. James,

  1321. in his letter,

  1322. says a similar

  1323. sort of thing.

  1324. James 1,

    James 1:2

  1325. verse 2,

  1326. he writes,

  1327. consider it pure

  1328. joy,

  1329. my brothers and

  1330. sisters,

  1331. whenever you face

  1332. trials of many

  1333. kinds,

  1334. because you know

  1335. that the testing

  1336. of your faith

  1337. produces

  1338. perseverance.

  1339. Let perseverance

  1340. finish its work

  1341. so that you may

  1342. be mature

  1343. and complete,

  1344. not lacking

  1345. anything.

  1346. Here,

  1347. God speaks of

  1348. how we should

  1349. welcome trials

  1350. in our lives

  1351. because God

  1352. produces good

  1353. character.

  1354. He produces

  1355. maturity

  1356. in us

  1357. through them.

  1358. Good fruit,

  1359. much good fruit.

  1360. So yes,

  1361. God will at times

  1362. bring the pruning

  1363. shears

  1364. to bear on our

  1365. lives.

  1366. Jesus says so.

  1367. Every branch

  1368. that does bear fruit,

  1369. he prunes,

  1370. so that it will

  1371. be even more

  1372. fruitful.

  1373. But isn't it a

  1374. comfort to know

  1375. that God is the

  1376. one who holds

  1377. the pruning shears

  1378. of hardship

  1379. in his hand?

  1380. Isn't it a

  1381. comfort to know

  1382. that God is the

  1383. one who allows

  1384. loss and

  1385. difficulty and

  1386. illness for a

  1387. purpose?

  1388. purpose,

  1389. not just

  1390. willy-nilly,

  1391. but for a

  1392. purpose,

  1393. to cut off

  1394. the right

  1395. leaves and

  1396. the unnecessary

  1397. shoots in our

  1398. lives,

  1399. for maximum

  1400. fruit,

  1401. maximum good

  1402. to come from

  1403. us and for

  1404. us.

  1405. And it

  1406. isn't easy to

  1407. go through

  1408. this,

  1409. to be pruned

  1410. by the

  1411. gardener.

  1412. Think about

  1413. the story of

  1414. Job.

  1415. what did

  1416. he say?

  1417. He said,

  1418. the Lord

  1419. gives and

  1420. the Lord

  1421. takes away.

  1422. Job was

  1423. pruned.

  1424. Look at all

  1425. that he lost.

  1426. He lost

  1427. everything.

  1428. God took it

  1429. away from him

  1430. and no,

  1431. Job didn't

  1432. know in the

  1433. midst of it

  1434. why,

  1435. what God's

  1436. purpose was.

  1437. Not until the

  1438. very end when

  1439. God finally

  1440. brought about

  1441. all the good

  1442. that he intended

  1443. through it.

  1444. And he was

  1445. able to look

  1446. back and say

  1447. that his

  1448. life was

  1449. far more

  1450. blessed

  1451. after

  1452. than it

  1453. was before.

  1454. So that's

  1455. the first

  1456. kind of

  1457. pruning.

  1458. The kind

  1459. that we

  1460. usually think

  1461. of when we

  1462. read Jesus'

  1463. words here.

  1464. Our minds

  1465. often go to

  1466. trials and

  1467. hardships,

  1468. difficulties

  1469. that God

  1470. uses in our

  1471. lives,

  1472. to the ways

  1473. that God

  1474. sovereignly

  1475. directs our

  1476. lives to

  1477. keep us on

  1478. track,

  1479. going in the

  1480. right direction.

  1481. But then we

  1482. come to

  1483. verse 3.

  1484. Jesus,

  1485. speaking to

  1486. his disciples,

  1487. says,

  1488. you are

  1489. already clean

  1490. because of

  1491. the word I

  1492. have spoken

  1493. to you.

  1494. Maybe you're

  1495. wondering like I

  1496. was this week,

  1497. what on earth

  1498. does that mean?

  1499. What does it

  1500. have to do

  1501. with all

  1502. this talk

  1503. of pruning

  1504. and branches?

  1505. You might

  1506. be wondering.

  1507. If you have

  1508. the latest

  1509. NIV in

  1510. front of you,

  1511. you'll notice

  1512. that there's

  1513. a footnote

  1514. that goes

  1515. with the

  1516. word prunes

  1517. in verse 2.

  1518. You can look

  1519. down to the

  1520. bottom of the

  1521. page and it

  1522. says this,

  1523. the Greek

  1524. for he

  1525. prunes

  1526. also means

  1527. he cleans.

  1528. So in

  1529. Greek,

  1530. the verb

  1531. that they

  1532. used to

  1533. describe pruning

  1534. was just

  1535. simply clean,

  1536. to clean.

  1537. They didn't

  1538. have a more

  1539. specific word

  1540. like we do

  1541. in English.

  1542. So what

  1543. Jesus says

  1544. here in

  1545. verse 3,

  1546. it is

  1547. connected to

  1548. what he

  1549. said in

  1550. verse 2.

  1551. God prunes

  1552. each branch

  1553. to bear

  1554. more fruit.

  1555. Literally,

  1556. he cleans

  1557. each branch

  1558. of its

  1559. unneeded

  1560. growth so

  1561. that it

  1562. bears even

  1563. more fruit.

  1564. But now

  1565. Jesus says

  1566. to his

  1567. disciples,

  1568. you are

  1569. already

  1570. clean

  1571. because of

  1572. the word

  1573. I have

  1574. spoken to

  1575. you.

  1576. Now I'm

  1577. going to

  1578. just be

  1579. honest with

  1580. you.

  1581. I'm not

  1582. 100% sure

  1583. what Jesus

  1584. means by

  1585. this.

  1586. I looked

  1587. at some

  1588. good

  1589. commentaries,

  1590. I checked

  1591. out some

  1592. other sources

  1593. and other

  1594. teachers and

  1595. what they

  1596. say,

  1597. and it

  1598. seems that

  1599. they're somewhat

  1600. unclear about

  1601. it as

  1602. well.

  1603. Jesus has

  1604. been known

  1605. already in

  1606. this gospel

  1607. to kind of

  1608. make a play

  1609. on this

  1610. word clean.

  1611. We saw

  1612. that already

  1613. when Jesus

  1614. washed the

  1615. disciples'

  1616. feet and

  1617. Peter talked

  1618. about getting

  1619. a whole bath

  1620. and Jesus

  1621. says,

  1622. no,

  1623. you're already

  1624. clean,

  1625. but not

  1626. every one

  1627. of you,

  1628. referring to

  1629. Judas.

  1630. So there's a

  1631. couple different

  1632. ideas that

  1633. people have

  1634. about these

  1635. words.

  1636. Some think

  1637. that this

  1638. means that

  1639. the disciples

  1640. are already

  1641. saved,

  1642. that they're

  1643. already made

  1644. righteous through

  1645. faith in

  1646. Jesus.

  1647. Of course,

  1648. Judas is not

  1649. with them at

  1650. this moment.

  1651. He's gone

  1652. out of the

  1653. room to work

  1654. out his

  1655. betrayal.

  1656. Another idea

  1657. is that this

  1658. is a figure

  1659. of speech.

  1660. Not that

  1661. Jesus is

  1662. saying,

  1663. you are

  1664. already pure

  1665. or you are

  1666. already free

  1667. from sin,

  1668. but that

  1669. Jesus is

  1670. saying,

  1671. don't worry.

  1672. You guys,

  1673. as you are

  1674. right now,

  1675. are already

  1676. in the place

  1677. that God

  1678. wants you

  1679. to be.

  1680. He's

  1681. pleased with

  1682. you because

  1683. you've

  1684. accepted and

  1685. believed my

  1686. word.

  1687. A third

  1688. idea is

  1689. that we

  1690. should

  1691. translate

  1692. this word

  1693. clean in

  1694. verse 3

  1695. as pruned.

  1696. You are

  1697. already

  1698. pruned.

  1699. Not that

  1700. you'll never

  1701. need more

  1702. pruning,

  1703. but that for

  1704. now,

  1705. God has

  1706. been doing

  1707. that pruning

  1708. at the

  1709. right moments

  1710. in each of

  1711. your lives.

  1712. And for

  1713. right now,

  1714. you are

  1715. ready.

  1716. You are

  1717. set up

  1718. to bear

  1719. much good

  1720. fruit.

  1721. Again,

  1722. these are

  1723. guesses at

  1724. what Jesus

  1725. means when

  1726. he says,

  1727. you are

  1728. already

  1729. clean or

  1730. you are

  1731. already

  1732. pruned.

  1733. But one

  1734. thing we

  1735. can say

  1736. for sure

  1737. is why

  1738. and how

  1739. they got

  1740. that way.

  1741. Jesus

  1742. says,

  1743. you are

  1744. already

  1745. clean or

  1746. pruned

  1747. because of

  1748. the word

  1749. I have

  1750. spoken to

  1751. you.

  1752. At the

  1753. very least,

  1754. I think

  1755. Jesus means

  1756. to say that

  1757. God's

  1758. pruning

  1759. work doesn't

  1760. just come by

  1761. altering our

  1762. circumstances

  1763. sacrifices or

  1764. by taking

  1765. things away

  1766. in our

  1767. lives.

  1768. It seems

  1769. that Jesus

  1770. is pointing

  1771. to a

  1772. second way

  1773. that God

  1774. prunes his

  1775. people,

  1776. that he

  1777. prunes them

  1778. through the

  1779. words of

  1780. Jesus.

  1781. Perhaps we

  1782. might say it

  1783. this way,

  1784. not all

  1785. change in

  1786. our lives

  1787. has to

  1788. come the

  1789. hard way.

  1790. Could it

  1791. be that

  1792. Jesus has

  1793. often spoken

  1794. and commanded

  1795. and corrected

  1796. and rebuked?

  1797. And these

  1798. disciples,

  1799. they have

  1800. often believed

  1801. and embraced

  1802. and obeyed

  1803. and accepted

  1804. his words,

  1805. leading to

  1806. real change

  1807. in their

  1808. lives.

  1809. If this

  1810. is what

  1811. Jesus means,

  1812. then God's

  1813. pruning work

  1814. in our lives

  1815. can come also

  1816. through the

  1817. words of

  1818. Jesus and

  1819. us simply

  1820. believing them

  1821. and obeying

  1822. them,

  1823. doing what

  1824. he said,

  1825. putting our

  1826. energy and

  1827. our resources

  1828. into the

  1829. things that

  1830. he's told

  1831. us to

  1832. do.

  1833. And this

  1834. makes sense

  1835. when we

  1836. hear Jesus

  1837. say things

  1838. like he

  1839. did in

  1840. the Sermon

  1841. on the

  1842. Mount.

  1843. Do not

  1844. worry about

  1845. your life,

  1846. what you

  1847. will eat

  1848. or drink,

  1849. or about

  1850. your body,

  1851. what you

  1852. will wear,

  1853. but seek

  1854. first his

  1855. kingdom and

  1856. his righteousness

  1857. and all

  1858. these things

  1859. will be given

  1860. to you as

  1861. well.

  1862. If you

  1863. think about

  1864. these words,

  1865. this word

  1866. right here

  1867. is a

  1868. pruning

  1869. word.

  1870. It's God

  1871. speaking through

  1872. Jesus,

  1873. telling us

  1874. that we

  1875. should put

  1876. our energy

  1877. and our

  1878. resources

  1879. over here

  1880. towards fruit

  1881. production and

  1882. not over here

  1883. to the things

  1884. that are

  1885. unnecessary.

  1886. And so if we

  1887. simply accept

  1888. this and

  1889. believe it

  1890. and obey it,

  1891. God is at

  1892. work in us

  1893. doing the

  1894. pruning,

  1895. bringing about

  1896. the good fruit

  1897. that he desires

  1898. in our lives.

  1899. and if we

  1900. disregard these

  1901. words,

  1902. if we don't

  1903. listen to

  1904. these words,

  1905. well,

  1906. maybe God

  1907. then might

  1908. bring the

  1909. other sort

  1910. of pruning

  1911. into our

  1912. lives and

  1913. put us in

  1914. a situation

  1915. where we

  1916. can no

  1917. longer look

  1918. to these

  1919. things.

  1920. So let me

  1921. recap a little

  1922. bit and just

  1923. bring this to a

  1924. close.

  1925. God is not

  1926. content for a

  1927. meager harvest

  1928. from our

  1929. lives.

  1930. When we

  1931. believe in

  1932. Jesus and

  1933. are joined to

  1934. him, he

  1935. wants our

  1936. lives to

  1937. overflow with

  1938. goodness.

  1939. And we

  1940. can and we

  1941. will so long

  1942. as we remain

  1943. in close

  1944. relationship with

  1945. Jesus, the

  1946. source of that

  1947. goodness,

  1948. walking closely

  1949. with him.

  1950. And praise the

  1951. Lord.

  1952. Lord, we're

  1953. not left to

  1954. ourselves to

  1955. do this.

  1956. We often

  1957. falter.

  1958. We often

  1959. fail.

  1960. But the one

  1961. who never

  1962. falters and

  1963. never fails is

  1964. at work in

  1965. us and on

  1966. us and

  1967. around us,

  1968. carefully pruning

  1969. us through the

  1970. words that he

  1971. speaks and the

  1972. ways he directs

  1973. our path.

  1974. Let's pray.

  1975. Father in

  1976. heaven, thank

  1977. you that you

  1978. do not leave

  1979. us to

  1980. ourselves.

  1981. We know

  1982. that we

  1983. would fall,

  1984. we would

  1985. falter, we

  1986. would flunk

  1987. out of it.

  1988. Thank you

  1989. that you love

  1990. us enough to

  1991. do the

  1992. pruning, to

  1993. allow the

  1994. hard things to

  1995. come into our

  1996. lives.

  1997. thank you that

  1998. one day every

  1999. single one of

  2000. us who

  2001. believes in

  2002. your name and

  2003. belongs to

  2004. Jesus will get

  2005. to the end of

  2006. our lives and

  2007. look back and

  2008. not see that it

  2009. was all a waste.

  2010. we love you and

  2011. we pray and ask

  2012. that you would

  2013. produce much

  2014. fruit in each

  2015. one of us through

  2016. our church.

  2017. We pray that this

  2018. whole community

  2019. would see that we

  2020. are your disciples

  2021. Jesus.

  2022. We ask this for

  2023. your glory and

  2024. your name.

  2025. Amen.

  2026. Amen.
