  1. This morning we're going to partake again of the Lord's table.

  2. The table has bread on it and it's got grape juice.

  3. And as most of you here know, the bread represents the body of Jesus

  4. and the cup represents the blood of Jesus.

  5. These are heavy symbols.

  6. We're here this morning to remember a death.

  7. And this is hard.

  8. It's heavy.

  9. But this death, the death of Jesus, is the most important thing that there is to know

  10. and believe and embrace in the entire universe.

  11. To appreciate this death, we need to first acknowledge our sins.

  12. And we're going to do that this morning with the help of King David,

  13. David, a man who lived long ago.

  14. David, even though he was a man after God's own heart,

  15. was a sinner just like me and just like you.

  16. Even though he loved goodness and righteousness,

  17. even though he was a worship leader and composed music expressing his love for God,

  18. he was still a sinner just like you and me.

  19. If you know the story of David, God chose him to be the king of Israel.

  20. And through great hardship and trial, God established David as the king of all the nation

  21. after the death of King Saul.

  22. And God gave David amazing success in battle against all the surrounding enemy nations.

  23. But David, too, was a sinner like you and me.

  24. We're going to read his story this morning in 2 Samuel chapter 11.

    2 Samuel 11 chapter mention

  25. In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war,

  26. David sent Joab, the commander of the army,

  27. out with the king's men and the whole Israelite army.

  28. They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah.

  29. But David remained in Jerusalem.

  30. One evening, David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace.

  31. From the roof, he saw a woman bathing.

  32. The woman was very beautiful.

  33. And David sent someone to find out about her.

  34. The man said,

  35. She's Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam,

  36. and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.

  37. Then David sent messengers to get her.

  38. She came to him.

  39. And he slept with her.

  40. Now she was purifying herself from her monthly uncleanness.

  41. Then she went back home.

  42. The woman conceived and sent word to David, saying,

  43. I'm pregnant.

  44. So David sent this word to Joab,

  45. Send me Uriah the Hittite.

  46. And Joab sent him to David.

  47. When Uriah came to him,

  48. David asked him how Joab was,

  49. how the soldiers were,

  50. and how the war was going.

  51. Then David said to Uriah,

  52. Go down to your house and wash your feet.

  53. So Uriah left the palace,

  54. and a gift from the king was sent after him.

  55. But Uriah slept at the entrance to the palace

  56. with all his master's servants,

  57. and did not go down to his house.

  58. David was told,

  59. Uriah did not go home.

  60. So he asked Uriah,

  61. Haven't you just come from a military campaign?

  62. Why didn't you go home?

  63. Uriah said to David,

  64. The ark and Israel and Judah are staying in tents,

  65. and my commander Joab and my lord's men

  66. are camped in the open country.

  67. How could I go to my house to eat and drink

  68. and make love to my wife?

  69. As surely as you live,

  70. I will not do such a thing.

  71. Then David said to him,

  72. Stay here one more day,

  73. and tomorrow I will send you back.

  74. So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next.

  75. At David's invitation,

  76. he ate and drank with him,

  77. and David made him drunk.

  78. But in the evening,

  79. Uriah went out to sleep on his mat

  80. among his master's servants.

  81. He did not go home.

  82. In the morning,

  83. David wrote a letter to Joab

  84. and sent it with Uriah.

  85. In it, he wrote,

  86. Put Uriah out in front

  87. where the fighting is fiercest.

  88. Then withdraw from him

  89. so he will be struck down and die.

  90. So while Joab had the city under siege,

  91. he put Uriah at a place

  92. where he knew the strongest defenders were.

  93. When the men of the city came out

  94. and fought against Joab,

  95. some of the men in David's army fell.

  96. Moreover,

  97. Uriah the Hittite died.

  98. Joab sent David a full account of the battle.

  99. He instructed the messenger,

  100. When you've finished giving the king

  101. this account of the battle,

  102. the king's anger may flare up,

  103. and he may ask you,

  104. Why did you get so close to the city to fight?

  105. Didn't you know they would shoot arrows from the wall?

  106. Who killed Abimelech, son of Jerob-Besheth?

  107. Didn't a woman drop an upper millstone on him from the wall

  108. so that he died in Thebez?

  109. Why did you get so close to the wall?

  110. If he asks you this,

  111. then say to him,

  112. Moreover,

  113. your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead.

  114. The messenger set out,

  115. and when he arrived,

  116. he told David everything Joab had sent him to say.

  117. The messenger said to David,

  118. The men overpowered us and came out against us in the open,

  119. but we drove them back to the entrance of the city gate.

  120. Then the archers shot arrows at your servants from the wall,

  121. and some of the king's men died.

  122. Moreover,

  123. your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead.

  124. David told the messenger,

  125. Say this to Joab,

  126. Don't let this upset you.

  127. The sword devours one as well as another.

  128. Press the attack against the city and destroy it.

  129. Say this to encourage Joab,

  130. When Uriah's wife heard that her husband was dead,

  131. she mourned for him.

  132. After the time of mourning was over,

  133. David had her brought to his house,

  134. and she became his wife and bore him a son.

  135. But the thing David had done displeased the Lord.

  136. The Lord sent Nathan to David.

  137. When Nathan came to him,

  138. he said,

  139. There were two men in a certain town,

  140. one rich and the other poor.

  141. The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle,

  142. but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought.

  143. He raised it,

  144. and it grew up with him and his children.

  145. It shared his food,

  146. drank from his cup,

  147. and even slept in his arms.

  148. It was like a daughter to him.

  149. Now a traveler came to the rich man,

  150. but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle

  151. to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him.

  152. Instead,

  153. he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man

  154. and prepared it for the one who had come to him.

  155. David burned with anger against the man

  156. and said to Nathan,

  157. As surely as the Lord lives,

  158. the man who did this must die.

  159. He must pay for that lamb four times over

  160. because he did such a thing and had no pity.

  161. Then Nathan said to David,

  162. You are the man.

  163. This is what the Lord,

  164. the God of Israel,

  165. says,

  166. I anointed you king over Israel,

  167. and I delivered you from the hand of Saul.

  168. I gave your master's house to you

  169. and your master's wives into your arms.

  170. I gave you all Israel and Judah,

  171. and if all this had been too little,

  172. I would have given you even more.

  173. Why did you despise the word of the Lord

  174. by doing what is evil in his eyes?

  175. You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword

  176. and took his wife to be your own.

  177. You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites.

  178. Now, therefore,

  179. the sword will never depart from your house

  180. because you despised me

  181. and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite

  182. to be your own.

  183. This is what the Lord says,

  184. Out of your own household,

  185. I'm going to bring calamity on you.

  186. Before your very eyes,

  187. I will take your wives

  188. and give them to one who is close to you,

  189. and he will sleep with your wives

  190. in broad daylight.

  191. You did it in secret,

  192. but I will do this thing

  193. in broad daylight before all Israel.

  194. Then David said to Nathan,

  195. I have sinned against the Lord.

  196. Nathan replied,

  197. The Lord has taken away your sin.

  198. You are not going to die,

  199. but because by doing this

  200. you have shown utter contempt for the Lord,

  201. the son born to you will die.

  202. This is a heart-wrenching story.

  203. Even the best of men

  204. can commit the worst of sins.

  205. He knew what he was supposed to be doing.

  206. It was the time when kings go off to war

  207. and probably many of the other kings

  208. were out there on the battlefield

  209. with their armies,

  210. but this king decided to stay home

  211. where it was comfortable

  212. and cozy

  213. while his men

  214. risked their lives.

  215. David's men were out there

  216. sleeping on the hard ground

  217. in tents.

  218. And what was David doing?

  219. Enjoying the comforts

  220. of his palace.

  221. Going for a leisurely stroll

  222. up on the roof.

  223. He notices

  224. a beautiful woman

  225. bathing

  226. and his heart

  227. is overcome

  228. with lust.

  229. After finding out

  230. that she is the wife

  231. of another man,

  232. he decides to take her anyway.

  233. To be with her

  234. as if she was his wife.

  235. Deliberately

  236. breaking the seventh commandment.

  237. We don't know.

  238. Perhaps David was thinking

  239. I'm the king.

  240. I can do as I please.

  241. But then he found out

  242. that Bathsheba

  243. was now pregnant

  244. with his child.

  245. And he goes to

  246. great lengths

  247. as we just heard

  248. to cover up

  249. and to hide

  250. this evil thing

  251. that he had done.

  252. He sends a messenger

  253. all the way out

  254. to where the army

  255. is camped

  256. to bring back

  257. the husband

  258. of Bathsheba.

  259. all part of

  260. an elaborate plan

  261. to cover this up

  262. expecting that he will go

  263. and be with his wife

  264. and he can make it look like

  265. all along

  266. this is Uriah's child.

  267. But Uriah can't stop

  268. thinking

  269. about what his companions

  270. his fellow soldiers

  271. are going through

  272. as they're camped out

  273. in the open

  274. in tents.

  275. Could he really go

  276. and enjoy the comforts

  277. of his home

  278. and his wife

  279. and then go back

  280. out to the army

  281. and tell them

  282. all about the great time

  283. that he had

  284. and the special treatment

  285. he got for the king

  286. while they were out there

  287. risking their lives

  288. missing their wives

  289. and families?

  290. It seems that

  291. the harder David tries

  292. to get Uriah

  293. to go home

  294. and to be with his wife

  295. and to cover up

  296. this sin

  297. the more obvious

  298. it becomes

  299. that David

  300. is in a wicked

  301. frame of mind

  302. here he is

  303. feasting with Uriah

  304. in the palace

  305. making him drunk

  306. hoping to get him

  307. to do

  308. what he wants him

  309. to do

  310. while his men

  311. are out there

  312. fighting

  313. putting their lives

  314. on the line

  315. finally David

  316. decides to do

  317. another great evil

  318. to cover up

  319. his sin

  320. he breaks

  321. the sixth commandment

  322. and he

  323. gives the order

  324. for Bathsheba's

  325. husband

  326. to be killed

  327. to be murdered

  328. and he seems

  329. so cold

  330. and calm

  331. and calculated

  332. about it

  333. he even sends

  334. the message

  335. sealing Uriah's

  336. fate with him

  337. and what is

  338. David's response

  339. when he hears

  340. that Uriah

  341. is dead

  342. don't worry

  343. about it

  344. people die

  345. all the time

  346. in battle

  347. don't let it

  348. bother you

  349. and with Uriah

  350. out of the way

  351. David

  352. carries out

  353. the fullness

  354. of his adultery

  355. taking Uriah's

  356. wife

  357. to be his own

  358. problem solved

  359. thought David

  360. I wonder

  361. how do you see

  362. David

  363. in this story

  364. there he is

  365. sinning

  366. and sinning

  367. some more

  368. and then

  369. trying to cover

  370. it up

  371. and then

  372. sinning

  373. some more

  374. all the while

  375. not too bothered

  376. it would seem

  377. by what he has

  378. done

  379. it's not

  380. that bad

  381. I mean

  382. I've made

  383. some mistakes

  384. but as long

  385. as nobody

  386. knows about

  387. them

  388. it'll be

  389. alright

  390. who's the hero

  391. of this story

  392. it's certainly

  393. not David

  394. we probably

  395. tend to look

  396. at Uriah

  397. as the hero

  398. and he certainly

  399. shines here

  400. as a man

  401. of character

  402. but he's also

  403. the tragic

  404. casualty

  405. imagine

  406. yourself

  407. in Uriah's

  408. shoes

  409. how would

  410. you feel

  411. if you were

  412. him

  413. and you knew

  414. what your

  415. king

  416. had done

  417. to your

  418. dear wife

  419. no

  420. the real

  421. hero

  422. in this

  423. story

  424. is the

  425. good

  426. and just

  427. God

  428. who will

  429. not allow

  430. David

  431. to just

  432. get away

  433. with this

  434. and so

  435. God

  436. sends

  437. his

  438. prophet

  439. Nathan

  440. God

  441. gives

  442. Nathan

  443. the exact

  444. words

  445. to bring

  446. the

  447. fullest

  448. conviction

  449. possible

  450. to David's

  451. heart

  452. David

  453. even

  454. goes so

  455. far

  456. as to

  457. pronounce

  458. the sentence

  459. that he

  460. deserves

  461. before he

  462. realizes

  463. that it's

  464. him

  465. this story

  466. is about

  467. he says

  468. the man

  469. who did

  470. this

  471. must die

  472. because he

  473. did such

  474. a thing

  475. and had

  476. no pity

  477. you

  478. are the

  479. man

  480. said

  481. God

  482. to David

  483. David

  484. realized

  485. that he

  486. couldn't hide

  487. his sin

  488. from God

  489. God

  490. was going

  491. to ensure

  492. that he

  493. did not

  494. get away

  495. with it

  496. and David

  497. crumbled

  498. in repentance

  499. before the

  500. Lord

  501. he said

  502. I have

  503. sinned

  504. against

  505. the

  506. Lord

  507. David

  508. was broken

  509. in his

  510. heart

  511. as he

  512. admitted

  513. what he

  514. had done

  515. that he

  516. was guilty

  517. and that

  518. God

  519. was right

  520. and it's

  521. here in the

  522. midst of all

  523. this that

  524. David came

  525. to pray

  526. the words

  527. we read

  528. in Psalm

  529. 51

  530. if you have

  531. your Bible

  532. open

  533. you're welcome

  534. to turn to it

  535. what was

  536. David's prayer

  537. right in the

  538. midst of this

  539. it was

  540. this

  541. have mercy

  542. on me

  543. oh God

  544. according

  545. to your

  546. unfailing

  547. love

  548. according

  549. to your

  550. great

  551. compassion

  552. blot out

  553. my

  554. transgressions

  555. wash

  556. away

  557. all my

  558. iniquity

  559. and cleanse

  560. me from

  561. my sin

  562. for I

  563. know

  564. my

  565. transgressions

  566. and my

  567. sin is

  568. always

  569. before me

  570. against

  571. you

  572. you only

  573. have I

  574. sinned

  575. and done

  576. what is

  577. evil

  578. in your

  579. sight

  580. so you

  581. are right

  582. in your

  583. verdict

  584. and justified

  585. when you

  586. judge

  587. surely I

  588. was sinful

  589. at birth

  590. sinful from

  591. the time

  592. my mother

  593. conceived

  594. me

  595. yet you

  596. desired

  597. faithfulness

  598. even in

  599. the womb

  600. you taught

  601. me wisdom

  602. in that

  603. secret

  604. place

  605. cleanse

  606. me

  607. with

  608. hyssop

  609. and I

  610. will be

  611. clean

  612. wash

  613. me

  614. and I

  615. will be

  616. whiter

  617. than

  618. snow

  619. let me

  620. hear joy

  621. and gladness

  622. let the

  623. bones

  624. you have

  625. crushed

  626. rejoice

  627. hide

  628. your face

  629. from my

  630. sins

  631. and blot

  632. out all

  633. my

  634. iniquity

  635. create

  636. in me

  637. a pure

  638. heart

  639. oh

  640. God

  641. and renew

  642. a steadfast

  643. spirit

  644. within me

  645. do not

  646. cast me

  647. from your

  648. presence

  649. or take

  650. your

  651. holy

  652. spirit

  653. from me

  654. restore

  655. to me

  656. the joy

  657. of your

  658. salvation

  659. and grant

  660. me a

  661. willing spirit

  662. to sustain

  663. me

  664. then I

  665. will teach

  666. transgressors

  667. your ways

  668. so that

  669. sinners

  670. will turn

  671. back to

  672. you

  673. deliver me

  674. from the

  675. guilt

  676. of bloodshed

  677. oh

  678. God

  679. you who

  680. are God

  681. my savior

  682. and my

  683. tongue

  684. will sing

  685. of your

  686. righteousness

  687. open my

  688. lips

  689. Lord

  690. and my

  691. mouth

  692. will declare

  693. your praise

  694. you do

  695. not delight

  696. in sacrifice

  697. or I

  698. would bring

  699. it

  700. you do

  701. not take

  702. pleasure

  703. in burnt

  704. offerings

  705. my

  706. sacrifice

  707. oh

  708. God

  709. is a

  710. broken

  711. spirit

  712. a

  713. broken

  714. and

  715. contrite

  716. heart

  717. you

  718. God

  719. will not

  720. despise

  721. David

  722. David

  723. came to

  724. feel

  725. the

  726. depth

  727. of his

  728. guilt

  729. have

  730. you

  731. David

  732. acknowledged

  733. to God

  734. the

  735. ugliness

  736. and the

  737. evil

  738. of the

  739. things

  740. that he

  741. had

  742. done

  743. have

  744. you

  745. David

  746. knew

  747. that

  748. sinning

  749. was a

  750. perpetual

  751. problem

  752. in his

  753. life

  754. my

  755. sin

  756. is

  757. always

  758. before

  759. you

  760. do

  761. you

  762. know

  763. that

  764. David

  765. came to

  766. agree

  767. with God

  768. about the

  769. rightness

  770. of his

  771. verdict

  772. have

  773. you

  774. David

  775. was truly

  776. broken

  777. over

  778. his

  779. sin

  780. are

  781. you

  782. this

  783. prayer

  784. that

  785. David

  786. prays

  787. here

  788. this

  789. is

  790. what

  791. repentance

  792. is

  793. it's

  794. what

  795. it

  796. looks

  797. like

  798. look

  799. at

  800. what

  801. David

  802. asks

  803. God

  804. to

  805. do

  806. in

  807. verse

  808. 7

  809. cleanse

  810. me

  811. he

  812. prays

  813. what

  814. David

  815. means

  816. is

  817. that

  818. he

  819. knows

  820. the

  821. evil

  822. things

  823. he

  824. has

  825. done

  826. have

  827. made

  828. him

  829. filthy

  830. in

  831. the

  832. sight

  833. of

  834. God

  835. wash

  836. me

  837. he

  838. prays

  839. and

  840. I

  841. will

  842. be

  843. whiter

  844. than

  845. snow

  846. my

  847. guilt

  848. my

  849. sins

  850. have

  851. made

  852. me

  853. dirty

  854. they

  855. have

  856. stained

  857. me

  858. but

  859. notice

  860. the

  861. faith

  862. that

  863. David

  864. expresses

  865. here

  866. God

  867. if

  868. you

  869. wash

  870. me

  871. you

  872. can

  873. make

  874. me

  875. clean

  876. you

  877. can

  878. take

  879. that

  880. stain

  881. away

  882. the

  883. dirtiness

  884. of

  885. my

  886. sin

  887. verse

  888. 9

  889. David

  890. says

  891. blot

  892. out

  893. all

  894. my

  895. iniquity

  896. it's

  897. as though

  898. he's

  899. saying

  900. I

  901. know

  902. God

  903. that

  904. you

  905. keep

  906. the

  907. official

  908. records

  909. on

  910. everything

  911. that

  912. I

  913. have

  914. done

  915. and

  916. I

  917. can't

  918. change

  919. what

  920. I've

  921. done

  922. or

  923. what

  924. I

  925. deserve

  926. but

  927. you

  928. can

  929. spill

  930. the

  931. ink

  932. over

  933. that

  934. part

  935. of

  936. my

  937. record

  938. so

  939. that

  940. even

  941. you

  942. can't

  943. read

  944. it

  945. or

  946. see

  947. it

  948. anymore

  949. and

  950. it's

  951. as though

  952. David

  953. in the

  954. midst

  955. of

  956. all

  957. this

  958. realizes

  959. what

  960. has

  961. led

  962. him

  963. to

  964. do

  965. this

  966. evil

  967. in

  968. the

  969. first

  970. place

  971. I

  972. mean

  973. it's

  974. if

  975. God

  976. forgives

  977. and

  978. wipes

  979. away

  980. the

  981. sin

  982. cleans

  983. off

  984. the

  985. record

  986. that

  987. deals

  988. with

  989. the

  990. past

  991. but

  992. what

  993. about

  994. the

  995. future

  996. David

  997. knows

  998. that

  999. he

  1000. is

  1001. inclined

  1002. to

  1003. sin

  1004. again

  1005. even

  1006. after

  1007. all

  1008. this

  1009. he

  1010. realizes

  1011. that

  1012. there's

  1013. not

  1014. just

  1015. his

  1016. actions

  1017. that

  1018. have

  1019. been

  1020. dirty

  1021. but

  1022. that

  1023. the

  1024. dirtiness

  1025. of

  1026. his

  1027. actions

  1028. has

  1029. come

  1030. out

  1031. of

  1032. the

  1033. dirtiness

  1034. of

  1035. his

  1036. heart

  1037. and

  1038. so

  1039. he

  1040. prays

  1041. create

  1042. in

  1043. me

  1044. a

  1045. pure

  1046. heart

  1047. oh

  1048. God

  1049. take

  1050. away

  1051. completely

  1052. that

  1053. dirtiness

  1054. that

  1055. sinfulness

  1056. in

  1057. my

  1058. heart

  1059. God

  1060. do you

  1061. long

  1062. for a

  1063. pure

  1064. heart

  1065. do you

  1066. long

  1067. for God

  1068. to take

  1069. away

  1070. every

  1071. selfish

  1072. and

  1073. sinful

  1074. desire

  1075. of your

  1076. heart

  1077. and make

  1078. you

  1079. clean

  1080. there's

  1081. nothing

  1082. on this

  1083. earth

  1084. that I

  1085. long

  1086. for

  1087. more

  1088. verse

  1089. 14

  1090. is

  1091. rather

  1092. jarring

  1093. David

  1094. prays

  1095. deliver

  1096. me

  1097. from

  1098. the

  1099. guilt

  1100. of

  1101. blood

  1102. shed

  1103. you

  1104. who

  1105. are

  1106. God

  1107. my

  1108. savior

  1109. what

  1110. do

  1111. you

  1112. think

  1113. do

  1114. you

  1115. think

  1116. that

  1117. God

  1118. should

  1119. answer

  1120. that

  1121. prayer

  1122. do you

  1123. think

  1124. he should

  1125. forgive

  1126. this

  1127. adulterous

  1128. murderer

  1129. and

  1130. spare him

  1131. the punishment

  1132. that he

  1133. deserves

  1134. it's as

  1135. though

  1136. David

  1137. realizes

  1138. there's

  1139. no

  1140. kind

  1141. of

  1142. sacrifice

  1143. that I

  1144. can

  1145. bring

  1146. that

  1147. will

  1148. truly

  1149. atone

  1150. for

  1151. what

  1152. I've

  1153. done

  1154. verse

  1155. 16

  1156. you

  1157. do

  1158. not

  1159. delight

  1160. in

  1161. sacrifice

  1162. or

  1163. I

  1164. would

  1165. bring

  1166. it

  1167. you

  1168. do

  1169. not

  1170. take

  1171. pleasure

  1172. in

  1173. burnt

  1174. offerings

  1175. what

  1176. does

  1177. David

  1178. have

  1179. to

  1180. give

  1181. no

  1182. amount

  1183. of

  1184. bulls

  1185. or

  1186. rams

  1187. or

  1188. grain

  1189. offerings

  1190. is

  1191. really

  1192. going

  1193. to

  1194. do

  1195. it

  1196. all

  1197. I

  1198. have

  1199. to

  1200. offer

  1201. you

  1202. God

  1203. is

  1204. my

  1205. broken

  1206. heart

  1207. and

  1208. my

  1209. repentant

  1210. spirit

  1211. should

  1212. God

  1213. forgive

  1214. this

  1215. adulterous

  1216. murderer

  1217. and

  1218. spare

  1219. him

  1220. the

  1221. punishment

  1222. he

  1223. deserves

  1224. looking

  1225. back

  1226. to

  1227. verse

  1228. one

  1229. David

  1230. appeals

  1231. to

  1232. the

  1233. mercy

  1234. of

  1235. God

  1236. to

  1237. the

  1238. compassion

  1239. of

  1240. God

  1241. to

  1242. the

  1243. unfailing

  1244. love

  1245. of

  1246. God

  1247. and

  1248. as

  1249. the

  1250. story

  1251. goes

  1252. God

  1253. does

  1254. forgive

  1255. David

  1256. of

  1257. all

  1258. this

  1259. wickedness

  1260. so

  1261. that

  1262. David

  1263. does

  1264. not

  1265. receive

  1266. the

  1267. punishment

  1268. he

  1269. deserves

  1270. we

  1271. read

  1272. this

  1273. back

  1274. in

  1275. Samuel

  1276. chapter

  1277. 12

  1278. verse

  1279. 13

  1280. David

  1281. said

  1282. to

  1283. Nathan

  1284. I

  1285. have

  1286. sinned

  1287. against

  1288. the

  1289. Lord

  1290. Nathan

  1291. replied

  1292. the

  1293. Lord

  1294. has

  1295. taken

  1296. away

  1297. your

  1298. sin

  1299. you

  1300. are

  1301. not

  1302. going

  1303. to

  1304. die

  1305. but

  1306. because

  1307. by

  1308. doing

  1309. this

  1310. you

  1311. have

  1312. shown

  1313. utter

  1314. contempt

  1315. for

  1316. the

  1317. Lord

  1318. the

  1319. son

  1320. born

  1321. to

  1322. you

  1323. will

  1324. die

  1325. this

  1326. is

  1327. maybe

  1328. the

  1329. hardest

  1330. part

  1331. of

  1332. the

  1333. story

  1334. for

  1335. all

  1336. of

  1337. us

  1338. how

  1339. God

  1340. why

  1341. does

  1342. God

  1343. seem

  1344. to

  1345. punish

  1346. the

  1347. innocent

  1348. child

  1349. instead

  1350. of

  1351. David

  1352. how

  1353. could

  1354. he

  1355. do

  1356. that

  1357. why

  1358. should

  1359. the

  1360. innocent

  1361. son

  1362. of

  1363. David

  1364. bear

  1365. the

  1366. punishment

  1367. for

  1368. his

  1369. sin

  1370. I

  1371. wish

  1372. I

  1373. could

  1374. tell

  1375. you

  1376. this

  1377. morning

  1378. that

  1379. the

  1380. child

  1381. doesn't

  1382. die

  1383. but

  1384. the

  1385. child

  1386. does

  1387. die

  1388. at

  1389. some

  1390. point

  1391. we

  1392. have

  1393. to

  1394. accept

  1395. by

  1396. faith

  1397. that

  1398. God

  1399. reserves

  1400. the

  1401. right

  1402. to

  1403. give

  1404. life

  1405. and

  1406. to

  1407. take

  1408. it

  1409. away

  1410. from

  1411. any

  1412. one

  1413. of

  1414. us

  1415. at

  1416. any

  1417. moment

  1418. he

  1419. is

  1420. God

  1421. and

  1422. we

  1423. are

  1424. not

  1425. he

  1426. is

  1427. pure

  1428. he

  1429. is

  1430. free

  1431. from

  1432. sin

  1433. he

  1434. is

  1435. just

  1436. he

  1437. only

  1438. ever

  1439. does

  1440. what

  1441. is

  1442. right

  1443. and

  1444. we

  1445. are

  1446. not

  1447. as

  1448. David

  1449. just

  1450. expressed

  1451. we

  1452. are

  1453. sinful

  1454. even

  1455. from

  1456. the

  1457. womb

  1458. so

  1459. hard

  1460. as

  1461. it

  1462. is

  1463. we

  1464. simply

  1465. have

  1466. to

  1467. accept

  1468. this

  1469. by

  1470. faith

  1471. God

  1472. is

  1473. not

  1474. being

  1475. unjust

  1476. with

  1477. this

  1478. punishment

  1479. and

  1480. once

  1481. we

  1482. come

  1483. to

  1484. terms

  1485. with

  1486. that

  1487. we

  1488. see

  1489. a ray

  1490. of

  1491. grace

  1492. God

  1493. is

  1494. pointing

  1495. to

  1496. something

  1497. here

  1498. should

  1499. God

  1500. forgive

  1501. this

  1502. adulterous

  1503. murderer

  1504. and

  1505. spare

  1506. him

  1507. the

  1508. punishment

  1509. he

  1510. deserves

  1511. should

  1512. God

  1513. forgive

  1514. you

  1515. for

  1516. all the

  1517. wicked

  1518. things

  1519. that

  1520. you've

  1521. done

  1522. and

  1523. spare

  1524. you

  1525. the

  1526. punishment

  1527. that

  1528. you

  1529. deserve

  1530. amazingly

  1531. God

  1532. loves

  1533. this

  1534. man

  1535. David

  1536. with

  1537. an

  1538. unfailing

  1539. love

  1540. despite

  1541. what

  1542. he's

  1543. done

  1544. amazingly

  1545. God

  1546. has

  1547. compassion

  1548. on him

  1549. despite

  1550. what

  1551. he's

  1552. done

  1553. and

  1554. amazingly

  1555. God

  1556. can

  1557. take

  1558. away

  1559. David's

  1560. guilt

  1561. David's

  1562. sin

  1563. he can

  1564. blot

  1565. out

  1566. his

  1567. transgressions

  1568. and

  1569. he does

  1570. it

  1571. it would

  1572. seem

  1573. by punishing

  1574. the innocent

  1575. son of

  1576. David

  1577. for his

  1578. sin

  1579. now let

  1580. me be

  1581. clear

  1582. David's

  1583. innocent

  1584. child

  1585. dying

  1586. did not

  1587. atone

  1588. for David's

  1589. sin

  1590. it

  1591. couldn't

  1592. but it

  1593. does

  1594. foreshadow

  1595. an innocent

  1596. son of

  1597. David

  1598. who would

  1599. come

  1600. at a

  1601. later

  1602. time

  1603. a son

  1604. of David

  1605. whose

  1606. undeserved

  1607. death

  1608. is

  1609. enough

  1610. to

  1611. atone

  1612. for

  1613. David's

  1614. sin

  1615. I'm

  1616. talking

  1617. about

  1618. Jesus

  1619. who

  1620. died

  1621. not

  1622. just

  1623. for

  1624. David's

  1625. sin

  1626. but

  1627. for

  1628. mine

  1629. and

  1630. for

  1631. yours

  1632. for

  1633. the

  1634. sins

  1635. of the

  1636. whole

  1637. world

  1638. does

  1639. it

  1640. seem

  1641. fair

  1642. does

  1643. it

  1644. seem

  1645. just

  1646. that

  1647. God

  1648. would

  1649. punish

  1650. the

  1651. innocent

  1652. Jesus

  1653. to

  1654. take

  1655. away

  1656. our

  1657. sins

  1658. yet

  1659. because

  1660. God

  1661. is

  1662. compassionate

  1663. and

  1664. merciful

  1665. and

  1666. full

  1667. of

  1668. this

  1669. unfailing

  1670. love

  1671. for

  1672. you

  1673. and

  1674. for

  1675. me

  1676. he

  1677. chose

  1678. to

  1679. punish

  1680. the

  1681. son

  1682. of

  1683. David

  1684. Jesus

  1685. to

  1686. take

  1687. away

  1688. our

  1689. sins

  1690. so

  1691. that

  1692. we

  1693. could

  1694. be

  1695. spared

  1696. the

  1697. punishment

  1698. that

  1699. we

  1700. deserve

  1701. and

  1702. that's

  1703. what

  1704. this

  1705. table

  1706. behind

  1707. me

  1708. is

  1709. all

  1710. about

  1711. it's

  1712. here

  1713. we

  1714. remember

  1715. the

  1716. death

  1717. of

  1718. Jesus

  1719. his

  1720. body

  1721. was

  1722. broken

  1723. his

  1724. blood

  1725. was

  1726. shed

  1727. and

  1728. he

  1729. didn't

  1730. deserve

  1731. it

  1732. we

  1733. did

  1734. he

  1735. did

  1736. it

  1737. so

  1738. that

  1739. we

  1740. could

  1741. be

  1742. cleansed

  1743. and

  1744. washed

  1745. so

  1746. that

  1747. that

  1748. stain

  1749. that

  1750. we

  1751. couldn't

  1752. remove

  1753. could

  1754. be

  1755. gone

  1756. and

  1757. so

  1758. if

  1759. you

  1760. have

  1761. repented

  1762. like

  1763. David

  1764. did

  1765. of

  1766. your

  1767. sins

  1768. and

  1769. you

  1770. are

  1771. trusting

  1772. in

  1773. Jesus

  1774. and

  1775. his

  1776. death

  1777. to

  1778. save

  1779. you

  1780. to

  1781. forgive

  1782. you

  1783. to

  1784. atone

  1785. for

  1786. you

  1787. I

  1788. want

  1789. to

  1790. invite

  1791. you

  1792. to

  1793. partake

  1794. together

  1795. with

  1796. us

  1797. of

  1798. the

  1799. bread

  1800. and

  1801. the

  1802. cup

  1803. I'll

  1804. ask

  1805. Dave

  1806. Spellacy

  1807. and

  1808. Rod

  1809. if

  1810. you

  1811. would

  1812. come

  1813. up

  1814. and

  1815. pass

  1816. out

  1817. the

  1818. elements

  1819. and

  1820. if

  1821. you

  1822. have

  1823. done

  1824. this

  1825. if

  1826. you've

  1827. repented

  1828. and

  1829. believed

  1830. in

  1831. Jesus

  1832. you're

  1833. welcome

  1834. to

  1835. partake

  1836. you're

  1837. welcome

  1838. to

  1839. remember

  1840. with

  1841. us

  1842. and

  1843. if

  1844. not

  1845. please

  1846. just

  1847. signal

  1848. with

  1849. your

  1850. hand

  1851. to

  1852. let

  1853. the

  1854. elements

  1855. pass

  1856. you

  1857. by

  1858. we're

  1859. going

  1860. to

  1861. wait

  1862. until

  1863. everyone

  1864. who

  1865. wishes

  1866. to

  1867. partake

  1868. has

  1869. been

  1870. served

  1871. and

  1872. then

  1873. I'll

  1874. give

  1875. thanks

  1876. and

  1877. we'll

  1878. eat

  1879. and

  1880. drink

  1881. all

  1882. together

  1883. to

  1884. Sill

  1885. van

  1886. r

  1887. on

  1888. another

  1889. can

  1890. t

  1891. use

  1892. c

  1893. to

  1894. Amen.

  1895. Amen.

  1896. Amen.

  1897. Amen.

  1898. Amen.

  1899. Amen.

  1900. Amen.

  1901. Amen.

  1902. Amen.

  1903. Amen.

  1904. Amen.

1905. Father in heaven, we thank you so much for your mercy and your compassion.

1906. We have sinned, all of us, so many times we can't even keep count.

1907. But we thank you that Jesus' blood can atone, can wash clean, can blot out our transgressions completely.

  1908. Amen.

1909. We pray the prayer of David.

1910. Restore to us the joy of your salvation.

1911. Thank you for this gift and this love.

  1912. In Jesus' name, amen.

  1913. So, there's my need.

  1914. Thank you, David.

  1915. Share this.

  1916. Make next two gifts.

  1917. Thank you.

  1918. There is a blessing.

  1919. Thank you.

1920. This morning's service would have to end with sadness

1921. if that was the end of the story.

1922. But praise God it isn't.

  1923. Three days later,

1924. Jesus was busted out of that tomb.

1925. God raised him from the dead.

1926. His death brought our forgiveness

1927. and his resurrection brings us life forever.

1928. And that restored relationship with God.

1929. And so we have so much because of that to look forward to.

1930. I'm going to invite our worship team to come up

1931. and lead us in song again.
