  1. All right, well this morning we're continuing on with Jesus and his teaching on the night of his betrayal.

  2. We're in John chapter 15. If you have a Bible with you, you can open it up to that passage.

    John 15 chapter mention

  3. Or there's the black Bibles in front of you there under the seats, or it'll be on screen this morning.

  4. We've been exploring some of the different elements of Jesus' analogy here with vine and branches and fruit.

  5. We've talked about how God is the gardener, how he's at work like a gardener to bring about a fruitful vineyard, a people full of good fruit.

  6. We've talked about how Jesus is the true vine, how he is the source of life and of all that is good.

  7. We've talked about how we are the branches, those of us who believe in him.

  8. And we talked at length two weeks ago about pruning and how God does that pruning work in our lives so that we will be even more fruitful.

  9. Well, this morning we're going to come back to this passage, but we're going to come at it from yet another angle.

  10. Our focus this morning is going to be on this word that we see in verse four, remain, or as some translations that you may be more familiar with, abide.

  11. In verse four, Jesus says, remain in me as I also remain in you.

  12. No branch can bear fruit by itself.

  13. It must remain in the vine.

  14. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

  15. What does it mean to remain or abide in Jesus?

  16. How do we do that?

  17. What is Jesus wanting these men to do?

  18. This will be our focus for this morning.

  19. And then we'll end by reflecting on this sweet reality that Jesus remains in us.

  20. I suspect that many of us wrestle with this simple command that Jesus gives.

  21. Remain in me.

  22. It's so easy to say it.

  23. But what does it mean?

  24. How do we do it?

  25. We're looking for clues to this right here in this passage in what Jesus said.

  26. And the first one comes to us here in verse four.

  27. Jesus says, remain in me.

  28. As I also remain in you.

  29. No branch can bear fruit by itself.

  30. It must remain in the vine.

  31. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

  32. So Jesus uses this analogy from the vineyard to explain a little of what it means to remain in him.

  33. He says, it's like with the branch of a plant.

  34. Of course, Jesus is referring to grapevines.

  35. But most of us are not too familiar with grapevines.

  36. So let's imagine something similar grown in our climate.

  37. Tomato plants.

  38. Picture in your mind a tomato plant.

  39. Imagine that main shoot.

  40. The vine.

  41. And then the branches coming off of that main shoot.

  42. Jesus says, no branch can bear fruit by itself.

  43. So just picture one of those branches of your tomato plant by itself just lying there on the ground.

  44. Broken off.

  45. Separated from the vine.

  46. Will it produce fruit like that?

  47. No, says Jesus.

  48. In order for the fruit to grow, it must remain in the vine.

  49. It must stay connected.

  50. It must continue to be attached.

  51. Now let's translate the metaphor of vines and branches to people.

  52. That's what Jesus does here.

  53. He says, just as it is with the branch and the vine, so it is with you.

  54. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

  55. So God, the gardener, wants to see good fruit come from our lives.

  56. Things like I mentioned a couple weeks back.

  57. Love.

  58. Honesty.

  59. Faithfulness.

  60. Self-control.

  61. Gentleness.

  62. Compassion.

  63. Forgiveness.

  64. Holiness.

  65. But just like the branch of a plant,

  66. you cannot bring forth these good things

  67. by yourself.

  68. On your own.

  69. I was thinking about this this week.

  70. You know, if all this stuff I just mentioned

  71. is the stuff that God wants to see in our lives,

  72. if that's what pleases Him,

  73. can we please God on our own

  74. without Jesus?

  75. Can we live that loving life

  76. with God's kind of love

  77. that He wants us to live

  78. towards others

  79. without Jesus?

  80. Your pride may tell you,

  81. yes,

  82. but Jesus says, no.

  83. No branch can bear fruit by itself

  84. on its own.

  85. We need Christ

  86. to live a life that pleases God.

  87. We need Jesus

  88. and what He gives

  89. and what He does in us

  90. to bring forth that good fruit

  91. that God is looking for in our lives.

  92. And so Jesus says,

  93. you must remain in me

  94. like a branch.

  95. You must remain in the vine

  96. to bear fruit.

  97. Now this word remain

  98. in the original language

  99. that John wrote in,

  100. it simply means to stay

  101. or to continue.

  102. There's nothing out of the ordinary

  103. about the word.

  104. Its meaning comes from the analogy

  105. here

  106. as Jesus uses it.

  107. To remain in Jesus

  108. is like a branch of a plant

  109. staying connected

  110. to that plant,

  111. continuing to be

  112. enjoined

  113. to the main shoot.

  114. In other words,

  115. Jesus is saying,

  116. don't leave off from me.

  117. Don't walk away from me.

  118. Stay fastened to me.

  119. Stay joined to me.

  120. What is this command

  121. in this analogy

  122. really about?

  123. It's about relationship.

  124. Stay in relationship with me,

  125. says Jesus.

  126. This is what it's all about.

  127. And in case there's any doubt,

  128. we need only look a couple verses

  129. down to verse 9

  130. and Jesus will say it

  131. loud and clear.

  132. As the Father has loved me,

  133. so have I loved you.

  134. Now remain in my love.

  135. If that's not an invitation

  136. or call to relationship,

  137. I don't know what is.

  138. This whole analogy

  139. of vine and branches,

  140. it tells us something

  141. of the kind of relationship

  142. that God desires

  143. with his people.

  144. It's meant to be

  145. a permanent

  146. and ongoing

  147. relationship.

  148. Think about the connection

  149. between a plant

  150. and its branches.

  151. How are the branches

  152. connected to the plant?

  153. Well, it's not like this.

  154. There's some kind of

  155. an interlocking mechanism

  156. here that allows him

  157. to stay connected

  158. for a time.

  159. But the way this is designed,

  160. it can connect

  161. and disconnect

  162. and connect

  163. and disconnect

  164. as much as you want,

  165. as much as you need.

  166. These things, though,

  167. are only meant

  168. to be together

  169. when this thing

  170. runs out of battery.

  171. Is that how our relationship

  172. with Jesus should be?

  173. We come to him,

  174. we relate to him,

  175. just when we're really

  176. in need of something

  177. from him.

  178. The rest of the time,

  179. though,

  180. we're kind of off

  181. on our own,

  182. living as independent

  183. agents,

  184. not too worried

  185. about him.

  186. No.

  187. The branch of a plant

  188. is meant to be

  189. connected

  190. all the time.

  191. Ongoing.

  192. Permanent.

  193. It's a part of the plant.

  194. And it has to stay there.

  195. In the same way,

  196. we're meant to be

  197. in a continual,

  198. ongoing,

  199. permanent relationship

  200. with Jesus,

  201. our Savior.

  202. We also see here

  203. in this analogy

  204. that this is meant

  205. to be a very deep

  206. and intimate

  207. relationship

  208. between Jesus

  209. and us.

  210. Think again

  211. about how

  212. the branch

  213. is attached

  214. to the tree.

  215. It's not

  216. plug and play

  217. like your iPhone.

  218. There's a real sense

  219. in which that branch

  220. is a part

  221. of the tree.

  222. It's one

  223. with the plant.

  224. In fact,

  225. sometimes we don't

  226. even bother

  227. to distinguish

  228. between the branch

  229. and the tree.

  230. We just say

  231. that whole thing,

  232. the tomato plant,

  233. the whole thing,

  234. it's all a plant

  235. or that tree.

  236. It's all the tree.

  237. And this is a picture

  238. of the kind

  239. of relationship

  240. that Jesus desires

  241. with these men

  242. and with you

  243. and with me

  244. where we are

  245. one with him.

  246. We are so deeply

  247. joined with him

  248. that we are a part

  249. of him

  250. and he

  251. of us.

  252. We're not just,

  253. you know,

  254. loosely affiliated

  255. with him.

  256. We're not just

  257. in today's vernacular

  258. subscribe to his channel.

  259. It's not as though

  260. we've just clicked

  261. the like

  262. and the follow button

  263. on Jesus' profile

  264. and we just

  265. take our regular updates

  266. and that's about it.

  267. No,

  268. this kind of relationship

  269. that Jesus has

  270. for us,

  271. it's a deep,

  272. it's an intimate

  273. relationship

  274. where we become

  275. one with him,

  276. united with him.

  277. Paul,

  278. in his letters,

  279. didn't even hesitate

  280. to refer to all

  281. who belong to Jesus

  282. as members

  283. of his body,

  284. that is the body

  285. of Christ.

  286. Just like your hand

  287. or your foot

  288. is a member

  289. of your body.

  290. And so,

  291. remain in me

  292. like a branch

  293. remains in the vine.

  294. It speaks of this

  295. deep and intimate

  296. relationship

  297. that we have

  298. with Jesus.

  299. Again,

  300. verse 9

  301. leads us

  302. in this direction.

  303. As the Father

  304. has loved me,

  305. so have I

  306. loved you.

  307. Now remain

  308. in my love.

  309. As Jesus

  310. calls these men

  311. to a certain

  312. kind of

  313. love relationship

  314. with him,

  315. he thinks about

  316. the love relationship

  317. that he has

  318. with his Father.

  319. And it is a rich,

  320. deep,

  321. and intimate

  322. relationship.

  323. That's the kind

  324. of relationship

  325. that he is

  326. pulling and

  327. calling his

  328. followers to.

  329. And so,

  330. when Jesus says,

  331. remain in me

  332. like a branch

  333. remains in the vine,

  334. he's calling us

  335. to continually

  336. give ourselves

  337. to him,

  338. to this kind

  339. of relationship

  340. with him,

  341. this ongoing,

  342. intimate,

  343. love relationship.

  344. relationship.

  345. Now we might

  346. wonder,

  347. why does Jesus

  348. seem to emphasize

  349. this so much?

  350. If you

  351. have kind of

  352. skimmed through

  353. the whole passage,

  354. you'll notice

  355. that he talks

  356. about this

  357. quite a bit.

  358. Remain in me.

  359. Neither can you

  360. bear fruit

  361. unless you

  362. remain in me.

  363. Verse 5,

  364. remain in me.

  365. Verse 6,

  366. if you do not

  367. remain in me.

  368. Verse 7,

  369. if you remain

  370. in me.

  371. And verse 9,

  372. how many times

  373. he says it,

  374. it's amazing.

  375. Why is this

  376. such a big deal?

  377. What's the

  378. temptation

  379. or the danger?

  380. Well,

  381. according to Jesus,

  382. there is a real

  383. danger

  384. if you do not

  385. remain

  386. in him.

  387. Verse 6,

  388. if you do not

  389. remain in me,

  390. you're like a

  391. branch that is

  392. thrown away

  393. and withers.

  394. Such branches

  395. are picked up,

  396. thrown into the

  397. fire,

  398. and burned.

  399. That's stated

  400. pretty strongly,

  401. isn't it?

  402. But if we're

  403. following this

  404. analogy,

  405. it makes

  406. perfect sense.

  407. It's not just

  408. that we can't

  409. bear fruit

  410. without Jesus,

  411. it's that

  412. without Jesus,

  413. we will wither,

  414. we will die

  415. spiritually.

  416. That's how it

  417. goes with the

  418. branch of a

  419. plant or the

  420. branch of a

  421. tree.

  422. When it gets

  423. separated from

  424. the tree,

  425. what happens

  426. to it is it

  427. just sits there

  428. on the ground.

  429. Eventually,

  430. the life that

  431. was in it

  432. disappears.

  433. Its flexibility

  434. and greenness

  435. just fades

  436. away.

  437. The leaves

  438. turn brown

  439. and crunchy.

  440. The branch

  441. itself becomes

  442. gray and

  443. dry and

  444. brittle.

  445. And it's

  446. now good

  447. for almost

  448. nothing

  449. except for

  450. getting a

  451. fire going.

  452. It kind of

  453. amazes me

  454. just how

  455. relevant Jesus

  456. is 2,000

  457. years later.

  458. I think about

  459. this all the

  460. time when I

  461. go out into

  462. my backyard.

  463. We have a

  464. huge poplar

  465. tree in our

  466. backyard and it

  467. seems like

  468. every time I

  469. go out there

  470. there's at

  471. least one or

  472. more branches

  473. that have

  474. broken off,

  475. that have

  476. fallen down on

  477. the ground.

  478. And guess what

  479. we do with

  480. them.

  481. We pick

  482. them up,

  483. we put

  484. them in a

  485. trash bin,

  486. designated

  487. sticks,

  488. and I

  489. drive them

  490. out to

  491. the dump

  492. and dump

  493. them in

  494. the burn

  495. pit.

  496. there's a

  497. very real

  498. danger to

  499. leaving off

  500. from Jesus,

  501. to walking

  502. away from

  503. him.

  504. You will

  505. wither.

  506. You will

  507. die, says

  508. Jesus.

  509. If you

  510. choose to

  511. walk away

  512. from Jesus

  513. and go and

  514. live for

  515. yourself, do

  516. things your

  517. own way,

  518. rejecting him,

  519. you won't be

  520. connected to

  521. Jesus, the

  522. vine.

  523. And if

  524. you aren't

  525. connected to

  526. him, then

  527. you won't

  528. have what

  529. he gives,

  530. what the

  531. vine gives

  532. to the

  533. branch, which

  534. is life.

  535. We need

  536. a continuing

  537. relationship

  538. with Jesus,

  539. an abiding

  540. relationship, and

  541. without that,

  542. we're in real

  543. danger.

  544. Now, I know

  545. there's some

  546. debate about how

  547. we should take

  548. these words of

  549. Jesus, and the

  550. question rolling

  551. around in some

  552. of your minds

  553. is, well, can

  554. we lose our

  555. salvation?

  556. Are you saying

  557. that?

  558. Is Jesus

  559. saying that?

  560. Jesus says a

  561. similar sort of

  562. thing at the

  563. beginning of this

  564. section in verse

  565. two.

  566. He says, the

  567. Father cuts off

  568. every branch in

  569. me that bears no

  570. fruit.

  571. This is a really

  572. important discussion,

  573. and so we're

  574. actually going to

  575. save that question

  576. for next Sunday.

  577. I don't want to

  578. rush it.

  579. I don't want

  580. anybody to get

  581. any funny ideas.

  582. we'll talk about

  583. it next week, but

  584. for now, I hope

  585. you don't just

  586. dismiss this

  587. warning of

  588. Jesus here in

  589. verse six.

  590. If you do not

  591. remain in me, you

  592. are like a branch

  593. that is thrown

  594. away and withers.

  595. Such branches are

  596. picked up, thrown

  597. into the fire, and

  598. burned.

  599. Jesus said this to

  600. Peter, to James, and

  601. to John that

  602. night, and so we

  603. ought to take it to

  604. heart as well.

  605. The relationship

  606. that we have with

  607. Jesus is everything.

  608. It is our life.

  609. Not just our

  610. earthly life, not

  611. just abundant life,

  612. but it is our

  613. life, eternal life.

  614. It comes in and

  615. through our

  616. continuing relationship

  617. with Jesus.

  618. Listen again to

  619. how John said it

  620. back in chapter

  621. three, verse

  622. thirty-six.

  623. He said,

  624. whoever believes

  625. in the Son has

  626. eternal life, but

  627. whoever rejects the

  628. Son will not see

  629. life, for God's

  630. wrath remains on

  631. them.

  632. Listen again to

  633. how John will say

  634. it many years later

  635. in his first letter

  636. to the churches.

  637. First John, chapter

  638. five, verse eleven.

  639. He writes, God

  640. has given us

  641. eternal life, and

  642. this life is in

  643. his Son.

  644. Whoever has the

  645. Son has life.

  646. Whoever does not

  647. have the Son of

  648. God does not have

  649. life.

  650. life.

  651. Why is Jesus so

  652. concerned that we

  653. stay in this kind

  654. of a close,

  655. intimate, connected

  656. relationship with

  657. him?

  658. Because just like

  659. the branch of a

  660. tree, our life

  661. depends on it.

  662. If we remain in

  663. him, we will have

  664. life.

  665. We will have all

  666. the good things that

  667. come through Christ.

  668. Christ.

  669. But if we do not,

  670. we will perish.

  671. So remaining in

  672. Jesus, this is of

  673. the utmost importance

  674. for every follower

  675. of Jesus.

  676. And this relationship,

  677. it's not just a

  678. one-way street.

  679. Jesus doesn't say,

  680. no matter what you

  681. do, I will remain

  682. in you, and you

  683. will bear much

  684. fruit.

  685. No, it's a real

  686. relationship that

  687. Jesus is after.

  688. It's a two-way

  689. street.

  690. He urges and

  691. commands us,

  692. remain in me.

  693. There's something we

  694. must do for our

  695. part in this

  696. relationship.

  697. And it's not a

  698. big list of good

  699. works.

  700. And it's not that

  701. we must bear our

  702. own fruit.

  703. It's a relational

  704. thing.

  705. We must give

  706. ourselves to

  707. him continually

  708. for the rest of

  709. our lives.

  710. Remain in me.

  711. Stay in me.

  712. And this is not

  713. just something that

  714. we do automatically.

  715. I mean, think

  716. about that.

  717. If every single

  718. follower of Jesus

  719. just does this

  720. automatically, Jesus

  721. wouldn't need to

  722. say this.

  723. He certainly

  724. wouldn't emphasize

  725. it so much.

  726. He wouldn't warn

  727. us about what would

  728. happen if we don't

  729. do it.

  730. it's not

  731. automatic.

  732. It's not

  733. something that we

  734. do without even

  735. intending to or

  736. thinking about.

  737. We do need to

  738. make some sort

  739. of effort.

  740. Jesus tells them

  741. to remain in

  742. him because it's

  743. something they

  744. must intentionally

  745. decide to do

  746. day after day,

  747. year after year.

  748. And so we come

  749. now to this

  750. final question.

  751. How do we do

  752. relationship with

  753. Jesus?

  754. We might be

  755. tempted to think

  756. that the disciples

  757. had it easy.

  758. After all, they

  759. were with Jesus.

  760. They could see

  761. him face to

  762. face.

  763. They could just

  764. talk to him and

  765. ask him questions

  766. and they could

  767. listen to his

  768. responses.

  769. They could walk

  770. with him on the

  771. road.

  772. But it's

  773. here I think we

  774. must realize Jesus

  775. doesn't say remain

  776. with me, but

  777. remain in me.

  778. He doesn't say

  779. remain with me.

  780. We've been hearing

  781. Jesus talk this

  782. very night about

  783. how he's about to

  784. leave his disciples

  785. and they will not

  786. be able to follow

  787. him.

  788. Jesus is about to

  789. be taken from

  790. them.

  791. crucified.

  792. And yes, he

  793. will have several

  794. visits with them

  795. after he rises

  796. from the dead, but

  797. not long after that

  798. he will be taken

  799. up to heaven and

  800. the disciples will

  801. no longer be with

  802. Jesus, at least

  803. not like they

  804. used to.

  805. And I think it's

  806. here that we

  807. realize what these

  808. words in John 15

  809. are all about.

  810. Jesus is preparing

  811. them for a

  812. different way of

  813. relating to him.

  814. than they have

  815. right now.

  816. Even though they

  817. cannot remain with

  818. him, they can

  819. remain in him.

  820. This relationship

  821. he has with them

  822. is going to

  823. continue even

  824. while he's

  825. away.

  826. But it's going to

  827. look different.

  828. And here's the

  829. wonderful truth about

  830. how it will be

  831. different.

  832. Jesus will not

  833. be with them.

  834. He'll be even

  835. closer.

  836. He'll be in

  837. them.

  838. Remain in me

  839. as I also

  840. remain in you.

  841. Do you hear

  842. that?

  843. if you remain

  844. in me and I

  845. in you, you

  846. will bear much

  847. fruit.

  848. Do you hear

  849. this?

  850. Yes, Jesus is

  851. calling them to

  852. remain in him.

  853. But Jesus is

  854. also assuring

  855. them, I will

  856. remain in you.

  857. Do you hear

  858. this?

  859. Jesus will be

  860. doing his part

  861. of the relationship

  862. with us.

  863. He'll be like a

  864. vine does to

  865. the branch,

  866. giving us all

  867. that we need

  868. for life.

  869. He'll be giving

  870. us everything

  871. that we need

  872. to bear much

  873. good fruit.

  874. He'll be

  875. continuing to

  876. love us just

  877. as the father

  878. has loved him.

  879. And the truth

  880. is the part

  881. that he plays

  882. on his side

  883. of this

  884. relationship

  885. is far

  886. greater because

  887. he is the

  888. vine.

  889. Yes, we

  890. need to

  891. remain in

  892. him, but

  893. no, we're

  894. not left

  895. completely to

  896. ourselves to

  897. do it.

  898. He remains

  899. in us.

  900. at times

  901. we do

  902. drift away,

  903. give into

  904. temptation,

  905. blow it,

  906. sin,

  907. but Jesus

  908. remains in

  909. us.

  910. He draws

  911. us back.

  912. He

  913. disciplines

  914. us lovingly.

  915. He forgives.

  916. there's a

  917. sense in

  918. which we

  919. could go

  920. back to

  921. the beginning

  922. of the

  923. message and

  924. look at

  925. this whole

  926. thing now

  927. through Jesus

  928. side of

  929. this

  930. relationship.

  931. I will

  932. remain in

  933. you,

  934. says Jesus.

  935. Like a

  936. tree holds

  937. and nourishes

  938. and gives

  939. life to

  940. its branches.

  941. I will

  942. stay connected

  943. to you,

  944. says Jesus.

  945. In

  946. relationship

  947. with you,

  948. I will

  949. not let

  950. you go.

  951. I will

  952. not abandon

  953. you.

  954. I will

  955. not leave

  956. you.

  957. I will

  958. not just

  959. let you

  960. fall to

  961. the ground.

  962. He's the

  963. one that

  964. desires this

  965. permanent,

  966. ongoing,

  967. intimate,

  968. and deep

  969. relationship

  970. with us.

  971. And so

  972. as long as

  973. you remain

  974. in me,

  975. I will

  976. remain in

  977. you,

  978. says Jesus.

  979. I will

  980. see to it

  981. that you

  982. bear much

  983. fruit.

  984. And all

  985. of this

  986. Jesus will

  987. do in

  988. them and

  989. he does

  990. in us

  991. through

  992. his spirit,

  993. the Holy

  994. Spirit who

  995. he gives

  996. to us.

  997. So yes,

  998. the relationship

  999. between Jesus

  1000. and his

  1001. disciples will

  1002. change from

  1003. here on

  1004. out,

  1005. but not

  1006. for the

  1007. worse.

  1008. It will

  1009. change for

  1010. the better.

  1011. So how

  1012. do we

  1013. do

  1014. relationship

  1015. with

  1016. Jesus?

  1017. How do

  1018. we

  1019. remain in

  1020. him?

  1021. I want

  1022. to get

  1023. down to

  1024. the

  1025. practical,

  1026. but I

  1027. want to

  1028. connect it

  1029. to the

  1030. story that

  1031. we're

  1032. reading

  1033. here.

  1034. We do

  1035. it the

  1036. same way

  1037. these

  1038. eleven

  1039. men

  1040. learned

  1041. to do

  1042. it

  1043. after

  1044. Jesus

  1045. left.

  1046. No

  1047. longer

  1048. could they

  1049. see his

  1050. human

  1051. face

  1052. right there

  1053. in front

  1054. of them,

  1055. but they

  1056. learned to

  1057. trust in

  1058. his unseen

  1059. presence

  1060. within them

  1061. by his

  1062. spirit.

  1063. No longer

  1064. could they

  1065. see him

  1066. walking down

  1067. the road

  1068. right there

  1069. in front

  1070. of them.

  1071. So they

  1072. learned to

  1073. walk by

  1074. faith,

  1075. obeying the

  1076. commands and

  1077. the instructions

  1078. that he had

  1079. given them

  1080. about all

  1081. kinds of

  1082. things in

  1083. life,

  1084. wherever they

  1085. were,

  1086. with whomever

  1087. they were

  1088. with.

  1089. No longer

  1090. did they

  1091. see him

  1092. right there

  1093. in front

  1094. of them,

  1095. just open

  1096. up his

  1097. lips and

  1098. start

  1099. teaching,

  1100. but they

  1101. learned to

  1102. listen to

  1103. the Holy

  1104. Spirit he

  1105. gave later

  1106. and his

  1107. reminders of

  1108. what Jesus

  1109. said,

  1110. even leading

  1111. them to

  1112. write down

  1113. the very

  1114. words that

  1115. Jesus spoke

  1116. to them.

  1117. In one

  1118. sense,

  1119. doing

  1120. relationship

  1121. with Jesus

  1122. is unlike

  1123. any other

  1124. relationship

  1125. that we

  1126. have.

  1127. He lives

  1128. in us

  1129. by his

  1130. spirit.

  1131. He's

  1132. unseeable

  1133. with our

  1134. eyes,

  1135. he's

  1136. untouchable

  1137. with our

  1138. hands,

  1139. and yet

  1140. we are

  1141. commanded

  1142. to believe

  1143. in him,

  1144. to trust

  1145. him,

  1146. to speak

  1147. to him,

  1148. to listen

  1149. to him,

  1150. to serve

  1151. him,

  1152. to obey

  1153. him,

  1154. this one

  1155. living in

  1156. us who

  1157. we can't

  1158. see.

  1159. But in

  1160. another

  1161. sense,

  1162. doing

  1163. relationship

  1164. with Jesus

  1165. is very

  1166. much like

  1167. other

  1168. relationships

  1169. that we

  1170. have.

  1171. We talk

  1172. to him

  1173. when we

  1174. pray,

  1175. we listen

  1176. to him

  1177. as we

  1178. read and

  1179. reflect on

  1180. the words

  1181. that he

  1182. spoke.

  1183. Like the

  1184. disciples,

  1185. we learn

  1186. from his

  1187. example and

  1188. his actions

  1189. as we read

  1190. and reflect

  1191. on the

  1192. things that

  1193. he did

  1194. and how

  1195. he lived

  1196. when he

  1197. was here.

  1198. We serve

  1199. him and

  1200. we do

  1201. his work

  1202. by obeying

  1203. his commands

  1204. wherever we

  1205. are with

  1206. whoever we're

  1207. with in

  1208. anticipation of

  1209. the day when

  1210. he returns

  1211. and we will

  1212. see him

  1213. face to

  1214. face.

  1215. This is how

  1216. we do

  1217. relationship

  1218. with Jesus.

  1219. This is how

  1220. we remain

  1221. in him.

  1222. we could

  1223. boil it

  1224. down

  1225. really

  1226. simply

  1227. to just

  1228. a few

  1229. words.

  1230. Words of

  1231. some of

  1232. those familiar

  1233. songs.

  1234. Trust

  1235. and obey.

  1236. Or the

  1237. kids song

  1238. read your

  1239. Bible,

  1240. pray every

  1241. day.

  1242. And it

  1243. might irk

  1244. you to hear

  1245. that this

  1246. is it.

  1247. That this

  1248. is how we

  1249. do it.

  1250. Like that's

  1251. it.

  1252. Trust and

  1253. obey.

  1254. Read your

  1255. Bible, pray

  1256. every day.

  1257. That's how

  1258. we do

  1259. relationship

  1260. with Jesus.

  1261. I mean,

  1262. come on.

  1263. Reading a

  1264. book,

  1265. talking to

  1266. the air.

  1267. But that's

  1268. the secret.

  1269. It all

  1270. comes down

  1271. to what's

  1272. in your

  1273. heart as

  1274. you approach

  1275. this book.

  1276. As you

  1277. get down

  1278. on your

  1279. knees to

  1280. pray.

  1281. What's in

  1282. your heart

  1283. as you sit

  1284. down and

  1285. read your

  1286. Bible?

  1287. Are you

  1288. there just

  1289. to check

  1290. off another

  1291. box?

  1292. And be

  1293. a good

  1294. Christian?

  1295. Or do

  1296. you sit

  1297. down to

  1298. read this

  1299. book with

  1300. a hard

  1301. attitude of

  1302. Lord, I

  1303. am here

  1304. to listen

  1305. to you

  1306. speak for

  1307. your servant

  1308. is listening.

  1309. That's the

  1310. hard attitude

  1311. of relationship.

  1312. What's in

  1313. your heart

  1314. as you get

  1315. down on

  1316. your knees

  1317. to pray?

  1318. I guess

  1319. I'll have

  1320. to pray

  1321. again here.

  1322. I'm

  1323. supposed to

  1324. do that

  1325. to be a

  1326. good Christian

  1327. even though

  1328. I don't

  1329. really feel

  1330. like it.

  1331. It kind

  1332. of feels

  1333. like I'm

  1334. just talking

  1335. to the

  1336. air.

  1337. Or do

  1338. you come

  1339. with this

  1340. heart

  1341. attitude?

  1342. Lord

  1343. Jesus,

  1344. I'm tired.

  1345. I'm worn

  1346. out today.

  1347. I don't

  1348. even feel

  1349. like praying

  1350. but I

  1351. know that

  1352. you are the

  1353. one that I

  1354. need to

  1355. talk to

  1356. now.

  1357. And you

  1358. pray.

  1359. That's the

  1360. heart attitude

  1361. of relationship.

  1362. And it

  1363. makes all

  1364. the difference.

  1365. If you're

  1366. wondering why

  1367. this doesn't

  1368. feel like

  1369. relationship,

  1370. could it be

  1371. that you

  1372. haven't been

  1373. treating these

  1374. things like

  1375. relationship?

  1376. Reading your

  1377. Bible.

  1378. Prayer.

  1379. prayer.

  1380. That's how

  1381. we talk

  1382. to and

  1383. listen to

  1384. Christ today.

  1385. He speaks

  1386. today through

  1387. his words.

  1388. The same

  1389. words he

  1390. spoke long

  1391. ago.

  1392. This is how

  1393. we remain

  1394. in Jesus.

  1395. Doing the

  1396. things he

  1397. has commanded

  1398. us to do

  1399. day after

  1400. day.

  1401. Serving

  1402. our king

  1403. even while

  1404. he's away.

  1405. This is how

  1406. we remain

  1407. in Jesus.

  1408. And so I

  1409. want to

  1410. encourage you

  1411. today simply

  1412. in this way.

  1413. Give

  1414. yourself

  1415. wholly,

  1416. completely

  1417. to him.

  1418. To that

  1419. relationship

  1420. with him

  1421. through his

  1422. word,

  1423. through prayer,

  1424. through

  1425. obedience,

  1426. through worship,

  1427. through complete

  1428. surrender.

  1429. He is the

  1430. vine.

  1431. And we are

  1432. the branches.

  1433. God

  1434. let's pray.

  1435. Father in

  1436. heaven,

  1437. it's a

  1438. wonderful

  1439. relationship

  1440. you have

  1441. made for

  1442. us with

  1443. our Savior

  1444. Jesus.

  1445. And there

  1446. are depths

  1447. to it that

  1448. we long

  1449. to grow in

  1450. and understand.

  1451. And I pray

  1452. that that

  1453. would be what

  1454. happens for

  1455. each one of

  1456. us here.

  1457. Whether

  1458. young or

  1459. old,

  1460. that we

  1461. would never

  1462. grow tired

  1463. or disinterested,

  1464. but that we

  1465. would continue

  1466. to know the

  1467. depths of

  1468. your love

  1469. for us.

  1470. That we

  1471. would continue

  1472. to find

  1473. sweet

  1474. joy

  1475. in walking

  1476. with you

  1477. day by

  1478. day.

  1479. Help us

  1480. to remain

  1481. in you.

  1482. Protect us

  1483. from anything

  1484. in our

  1485. world,

  1486. in our

  1487. own hearts,

  1488. that we

  1489. try to

  1490. separate us

  1491. from you.

  1492. Thank you

  1493. for the

  1494. assurance that

  1495. you remain

  1496. in us.

  1497. In Jesus'

  1498. name,

  1499. amen.
