  1. If you have your Bible with you, you can open it up to John chapter 15.

    John 15 chapter mention

  2. We're continuing to plug away at this teaching of Jesus.

  3. These words of Jesus were spoken to his disciples on the night of his betrayal.

  4. And this is after the Last Supper, but before they get to the Garden of Gethsemane.

  5. Jesus has been using this analogy of vine and branches and fruit to convey some really important truths to these men.

  6. As we've seen so far, all of this is about relationship.

  7. The relationship of the Father with his Son Jesus, gardener and vine.

  8. And the relationship of the branches, those followers of Jesus with Jesus the vine.

  9. And last week we considered the sober warnings of Jesus about just how important it is for all his followers to remain in him.

  10. So that we might bear the fruit that God desires.

  11. And we took comfort in the assurance of Jesus that he will remain in us and hold us.

  12. Well, this morning we're going to move fairly quickly through a number of verses here.

  13. And then we're going to camp a little bit on just one thought that Jesus said here in John chapter 15.

    John 15 chapter mention

  14. So let's pick this up in verse 7.

  15. Jesus said,

  16. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish and it will be done for you.

  17. This could be a whole sermon right here, but I'm going to not do that.

  18. Again, we heard this earlier.

  19. Jesus promises to answer their prayers and give them the things that they ask for.

  20. And again, it seems a lot like a blank check.

  21. It's almost like he's just encouraging them.

  22. You know, write whatever you want in that blank.

  23. Ask and I will do it for you.

  24. But then we notice again that there are some qualifications that go with that.

  25. Requirements for this blank check of prayer to be cash, to be delivered on.

  26. First, it requires that they remain in him.

  27. That they are walking in relationship with him.

  28. Continuing to trust and obey and follow.

  29. And second, Jesus adds in something new.

  30. He says,

  31. If my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish and it will be done for you.

  32. If my words remain in you.

  33. Over the years, I've had a Christian brother or two who I've asked this question to.

  34. So what are you reading in your Bible these days?

  35. And the answer has been,

  36. Well, reading is not really my preferred method of relating to God.

  37. It's not really my love language.

  38. I feel closest to God when I'm just praying or out on a stroll in nature.

  39. I'm always glad to hear that someone feels close to God.

  40. And I'm always glad to hear that people are praying and enjoying the beauty of God's creation.

  41. But according to Jesus, our relationship with him, our remaining in him, has to include his words.

  42. Jesus gives us words.

  43. And they're to be at the core of our relationship with him.

  44. He gives us words of truth.

  45. Words of encouragement.

  46. Words of rebuke.

  47. Words of promise.

  48. Words of hope.

  49. Words of instruction.

  50. Commands.

  51. All kinds of words.

  52. And we have many of them right here in our Bibles.

  53. And so this is one of the qualifications, the guarding statements to this whatever you wish.

  54. Ask whatever you wish and it will be done for you.

  55. If my words remain in you.

  56. If you are holding on to the things that I say.

  57. If we're not continually surrendering ourselves to these words of Jesus.

  58. Obeying them.

  59. Trusting them.

  60. Then we don't have the assurance that Jesus will do for us whatever we ask.

  61. This is God's way of kind of guarding that whatever.

  62. That seeming blank check of prayer.

  63. And ensuring that we don't just use prayer for our own selfish ambition.

  64. Or to satisfy our own greed or pride.

  65. If you remain in me and my words remain in you.

  66. Ask whatever you wish and it will be done for you.

  67. This is to my Father's glory.

  68. That you bear much fruit.

  69. Showing yourselves to be my disciples.

  70. Notice the flow here.

  71. The goal of asking in prayer is to bring glory to the Father.

  72. The result of asking in prayer is that we might bear much fruit.

  73. Think about this.

  74. It's not just the words of Jesus that are indispensable to this relationship that we have with him.

  75. It's also this prayerful asking.

  76. How is the Father glorified?

  77. How does this much fruit come in our lives?

  78. It comes as we ask whatever we wish.

  79. And receive it from God.

  80. But sometimes I wonder if all too often we fall back into that faithless frame of mind.

  81. Where we just, you know, decide not to pray.

  82. Not to ask for things.

  83. What's the point?

  84. God will do what he will do.

  85. But that's not what Jesus says here.

  86. He says God is glorified.

  87. We will bear much fruit as we ask for things and receive them from him.

  88. One of the verses in the Bible that haunts me in a good way, I think,

  89. is a statement made by James in James chapter 4 verse 2.

    James 4:2

  90. Now there's a context to that statement, but the statement's true either way.

  91. However you look at it, at the end there, he says,

  92. How many things do we not have simply because we have not asked God for them?

  93. Now as I just mentioned, there are reasons why what we ask might not be given.

  94. If we're not remaining in Jesus, if his words are not remaining in us,

  95. and James will even go on here in this passage to give some more reasons.

  96. If we're just asking to gratify ourselves or out of wrong motives,

  97. we ought not to expect to receive what we ask for.

  98. But those things aside, this is still true.

  99. You do not have sometimes because you do not ask God.

  100. How many things do we not have simply because we haven't asked God for them?

  101. Because we don't believe he cares enough.

  102. Or we don't believe that he can do something like that

  103. because it just seems so hard or so impossible.

  104. This is why prayer on Sunday mornings like we just did

  105. and prayer this Thursday evening are so important.

  106. God in his wisdom and sovereignty has decided

  107. to give to those who ask.

  108. To bring fruit from prayers that are prayed

  109. and requests that are made.

  110. Think back over some of those stories in the Old Testament.

  111. How many times did God act and intervene in response

  112. to the prayer of a man or woman?

  113. Countless times.

  114. Now sometimes he graciously acts even when we don't pray.

  115. And that's a wonderful thing.

  116. He is a gracious and compassionate God.

  117. And he loves sinners.

  118. But many times, often the pattern we see is that he acts

  119. and he gives and he does things in response

  120. to the humble prayers of his people.

  121. Verse 8.

  122. This is to my Father's glory

  123. that you bear much fruit

  124. showing yourselves to be my disciples.

  125. Now we talked about this verse already

  126. in a few messages,

  127. but I just want to note one more thing from this verse.

  128. God gets glory

  129. when we show ourselves to be Jesus' disciples.

  130. You know, sometimes we get worried

  131. about what outsiders,

  132. people who don't believe in Christ,

  133. think of us and about our faith.

  134. We worry that if we're too Christian,

  135. we might offend them,

  136. push them away.

  137. And the temptation can sometimes run very strong

  138. just to, you know, kind of hide our faith

  139. and to live as an undercover follower of Christ.

  140. But God wants you and me

  141. to show ourselves to be disciples of Jesus.

  142. He wants it to be known.

  143. He wants it to be seen.

  144. He wants it to be obvious

  145. by the much good fruit in our lives,

  146. which will include our conduct and our love,

  147. but also our words,

  148. our testimony to the King.

  149. And so I want to encourage you this morning

  150. don't let the fear of man intimidate you.

  151. And don't let the praise of man allure you.

  152. Jesus is the King.

  153. And one day the whole world is going to see that

  154. when He comes.

  155. Verse 9.

  156. As the Father has loved me,

  157. so have I loved you.

  158. Now remain in my love.

  159. If you keep my commands,

  160. you will remain in my love

  161. just as I have kept my Father's commands

  162. and remain in His love.

  163. I have told you this

  164. so that my joy may be in you

  165. and so that your joy may be complete.

  166. Love and obedience are the theme of these verses

  167. and we're going to come back

  168. and linger over them another day.

  169. But for this morning,

  170. let's focus in on what Jesus says

  171. here in verse 11.

  172. This is one of my favorite verses in the Bible.

  173. I have told you this

  174. so that my joy may be in you

  175. and that your joy may be complete.

  176. Do you know that Jesus wants you

  177. to be happy?

  178. And now I know that

  179. many Christian teachers out there

  180. have tried to make a distinction

  181. between joy and happiness

  182. and there's some truth to that.

  183. There's some truth to how we use those words today.

  184. Sometimes we do use that word happy

  185. in a really fleeting and shallow way

  186. like Happy Meals at McDonald's.

  187. You know,

  188. buy this meal for your kids

  189. and it will make them happy.

  190. But happy can still be used

  191. to refer to joy

  192. as a synonym for joy

  193. like in the hymn,

  194. Trust and Obey.

  195. For there's no other way

  196. to be happy in Jesus

  197. than to trust and obey.

  198. At their core,

  199. happiness and joy

  200. are synonyms.

  201. They mean the same thing.

  202. They both refer to

  203. an inward delight,

  204. an inward satisfaction,

  205. an inward pleasure

  206. that we come to have

  207. or to feel.

  208. The question is not so much

  209. about which is the right word

  210. but about what can make us

  211. truly happy

  212. or who.

  213. Ever since the Garden of Eden

  214. long ago,

  215. the devil has been preaching

  216. and one of his main messages

  217. is this.

  218. God wants you

  219. to be miserable.

  220. He wants you to go unfulfilled.

  221. He wants you to be unsatisfied.

  222. He wants you to have

  223. less than the best.

  224. He offers you no inward delight.

  225. Come,

  226. taste and see

  227. this fruit from the tree

  228. that he told you not to eat of.

  229. This will bring you

  230. great delight.

  231. It's a lie.

  232. probably referring back

  233. to all that he said before.

  234. All this talk

  235. of remaining in Jesus

  236. and his words

  237. remaining in us

  238. and remaining in his love.

  239. Referring to all that,

  240. Jesus says,

  241. I have told you this

  242. so that my joy

  243. may be in you

  244. and so that your joy

  245. may be complete.

  246. I want you

  247. to be happy.

  248. and embracing

  249. this truth,

  250. these core truths

  251. about my relationship

  252. with you,

  253. that's where you're

  254. going to find it.

  255. Give yourselves to me.

  256. Give yourselves

  257. to my love.

  258. Give yourselves

  259. to my words,

  260. to prayer.

  261. This is what will make

  262. your joy

  263. complete.

  264. Complete.

  265. Not just a little bit

  266. of joy.

  267. Not just

  268. some joy.

  269. But complete.

  270. Maximum.

  271. Full.

  272. The meter

  273. to the top.

  274. Do you know

  275. that Jesus

  276. wants that for you?

  277. He doesn't want you

  278. to be miserable.

  279. How would that

  280. bring glory to him?

  281. How does that show

  282. his matchless worth

  283. and beauty?

  284. No.

  285. God wants you

  286. to be the happiest

  287. that you can be.

  288. The challenge is

  289. will we trust

  290. that our life

  291. in Christ

  292. and our obedience

  293. to Christ

  294. and our relationship

  295. with Christ

  296. is the way

  297. to that fullness

  298. of joy?

  299. Or

  300. will we look

  301. for that joy

  302. instead

  303. in lesser things?

  304. Created things?

  305. Now don't get me

  306. wrong.

  307. The things of earth

  308. have been created

  309. for our joy.

  310. I don't want to

  311. create a false

  312. dichotomy here.

  313. 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 5:17

  314. chapter 5

  315. verse 17

  316. Paul says

  317. command those

  318. who are rich

  319. in this present

  320. world

  321. to put their

  322. hope in God

  323. who richly

  324. provides us

  325. with everything

  326. for our

  327. enjoyment.

  328. And in

  329. 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 4:4

  330. chapter 4

  331. verse 4

  332. everything

  333. God created

  334. is good

  335. and nothing

  336. is to be

  337. rejected

  338. if it is

  339. received

  340. with thanksgiving.

  341. The things

  342. of earth

  343. have been

  344. created

  345. for our

  346. joy.

  347. But notice

  348. that they're

  349. meant to

  350. give us

  351. joy

  352. like

  353. gifts

  354. give us

  355. joy.

  356. They are

  357. good things

  358. that we're

  359. meant to

  360. enjoy

  361. as we

  362. acknowledge

  363. the one

  364. who gave

  365. them to

  366. us

  367. and the

  368. love that

  369. he has

  370. in giving

  371. them.

  372. I love

  373. the way

  374. that C.S.

  375. Lewis

  376. captures this

  377. in his

  378. meditations

  379. in a

  380. tool shed.

  381. And I

  382. didn't have

  383. time to

  384. dig out

  385. the exact

  386. quotation

  387. and I'm

  388. taking some

  389. major

  390. liberalities

  391. in my

  392. quoting of

  393. this but

  394. hopefully the

  395. gist is

  396. enough to

  397. get by

  398. with here.

  399. Imagine that

  400. you're in a

  401. dark tool shed

  402. and you look

  403. up and you

  404. see this

  405. little beam

  406. of light

  407. coming through

  408. one of the

  409. cracks in

  410. the roof.

  411. That little

  412. ray,

  413. that beam

  414. of light,

  415. it's such a

  416. good thing

  417. in the

  418. darkness of

  419. the tool shed.

  420. It lets you

  421. see a little

  422. bit of what's

  423. around you.

  424. As you pass

  425. your hand

  426. through it,

  427. you can feel

  428. the warmth

  429. on your skin.

  430. It gives you

  431. a measure of

  432. happiness,

  433. that little

  434. ray of

  435. light here

  436. in the

  437. darkness.

  438. C.S.

  439. Lewis said

  440. that enjoying

  441. the good

  442. things of

  443. earth is

  444. like that.

  445. God has

  446. filled the

  447. whole world

  448. with all

  449. kinds of

  450. these little

  451. rays of

  452. light,

  453. good things

  454. that do

  455. good for

  456. us,

  457. that we

  458. can enjoy.

  459. But we

  460. need to

  461. remember that

  462. that little

  463. beam shining

  464. down in the

  465. tool shed

  466. does not

  467. exist on

  468. its own.

  469. It has a

  470. source and

  471. you can look

  472. up along

  473. the beam

  474. and trace

  475. it back

  476. to its

  477. source,

  478. something that's

  479. even more

  480. wonderful and

  481. awesome,

  482. the sun.

  483. in the same

  484. way, the

  485. things of

  486. earth, all

  487. the good

  488. created

  489. things that

  490. God has

  491. given us,

  492. they have

  493. their source

  494. and we

  495. are meant

  496. to trace

  497. them back

  498. up to the

  499. source and

  500. to receive

  501. those things,

  502. to enjoy

  503. them as

  504. gifts from

  505. the God

  506. who has

  507. given them.

  508. complete

  509. and full

  510. joy comes

  511. from

  512. relationship

  513. with the

  514. source,

  515. with the

  516. vine,

  517. with Jesus,

  518. with the

  519. Father.

  520. God does

  521. want us

  522. to be

  523. happy,

  524. but he

  525. is the

  526. source of

  527. all joy

  528. and happiness.

  529. That's what

  530. I want for

  531. you, says

  532. Jesus.

  533. maximum

  534. joy,

  535. fullest of

  536. happinesses,

  537. and that's

  538. why I'm

  539. telling you

  540. all this

  541. stuff about

  542. my relationship

  543. with you

  544. and how

  545. you need

  546. to remain

  547. in me

  548. and my

  549. words

  550. and prayer.

  551. How could

  552. this be,

  553. you might

  554. wonder?

  555. How could

  556. anyone be

  557. truly happy

  558. when someone

  559. else is

  560. telling them

  561. what to

  562. do?

  563. This is a

  564. question we

  565. can all

  566. sympathize with

  567. because

  568. the devil

  569. has another

  570. sermon that

  571. he loves

  572. to preach.

  573. You can't

  574. be happy

  575. unless you

  576. are the

  577. boss,

  578. unless you

  579. are in

  580. charge of

  581. your own

  582. life,

  583. making the

  584. decisions,

  585. calling the

  586. shots.

  587. That's where

  588. true satisfaction

  589. and happiness

  590. is found.

  591. Freedom to

  592. do whatever

  593. I please.

  594. this too

  595. is a lie.

  596. If we

  597. just look

  598. up one

  599. verse

  600. before this,

  601. we read,

  602. if you

  603. keep my

  604. commands,

  605. you will

  606. remain in

  607. my love

  608. just as I

  609. have kept

  610. my father's

  611. commands and

  612. remain in

  613. his love.

  614. love.

  615. Even

  616. Jesus,

  617. the son

  618. of God,

  619. the word

  620. who became

  621. flesh,

  622. even Jesus

  623. lived as a

  624. man under

  625. authority.

  626. He had the

  627. father's

  628. commands coming

  629. to him.

  630. He had God

  631. the father

  632. telling him

  633. what to do.

  634. Yes.

  635. But what

  636. does Jesus

  637. say?

  638. He says,

  639. I remained

  640. in,

  641. I lived

  642. in my

  643. father's

  644. love by

  645. obeying

  646. his commands.

  647. Fullness

  648. of joy

  649. doesn't come

  650. from having

  651. this illusion

  652. that we

  653. are now

  654. somehow free

  655. to do

  656. whatever we

  657. want.

  658. If Jesus

  659. could so

  660. deeply enjoy

  661. his father's

  662. love in

  663. the place

  664. of submission

  665. and obedience

  666. with his

  667. father

  668. telling him

  669. what to

  670. do,

  671. so can

  672. we.

  673. Most of

  674. you probably

  675. know someone

  676. in your

  677. life who's

  678. maybe a

  679. little younger

  680. than you,

  681. a little less

  682. experienced

  683. than you

  684. are.

  685. Maybe you've

  686. had a

  687. conversation

  688. with them

  689. where you

  690. see them

  691. and how

  692. they've

  693. kind of

  694. got their

  695. sights

  696. locked

  697. on something.

  698. And if I

  699. can just

  700. get this

  701. thing,

  702. I'll be

  703. happy.

  704. I'll be

  705. set.

  706. And this

  707. is how

  708. I'm going

  709. to do

  710. it.

  711. And as

  712. you listen

  713. to them,

  714. you think

  715. back to

  716. maybe how

  717. you learned

  718. that lesson

  719. the hard

  720. way when

  721. you were

  722. younger.

  723. It might

  724. be plain as

  725. day to

  726. you that

  727. they just

  728. aren't seeing

  729. clearly.

  730. This isn't

  731. the thing

  732. that will

  733. make them

  734. happy.

  735. This won't

  736. be a

  737. blessing in

  738. their lives.

  739. And the

  740. way that

  741. they're prepared

  742. to get it,

  743. it might even

  744. be damaging.

  745. It might even

  746. have lasting

  747. consequences.

  748. And so you

  749. tell them,

  750. don't do it.

  751. do this

  752. instead.

  753. This is

  754. going to be

  755. much better

  756. for you.

  757. Is that

  758. not what

  759. Jesus is

  760. doing when

  761. he gives

  762. his commands

  763. to us?

  764. Is he not

  765. the one who

  766. sees clearly

  767. the consequences

  768. and the

  769. effects of

  770. our decisions?

  771. is it

  772. possible that

  773. all along

  774. he only

  775. commands us

  776. to do

  777. things because

  778. he loves us

  779. so much

  780. and knows

  781. what's best

  782. for us,

  783. what we

  784. truly need,

  785. what will

  786. really make

  787. us happy?

  788. And so I

  789. want to just

  790. encourage all

  791. of us simply

  792. this morning,

  793. surrender your

  794. life to

  795. Jesus,

  796. the vine.

  797. it's only

  798. through him

  799. that we

  800. can have

  801. this fullest

  802. of joys.

  803. Maybe you're

  804. here and

  805. you've never

  806. done this.

  807. If that's

  808. you, I

  809. want to

  810. encourage you,

  811. do it

  812. today.

  813. Maybe you're

  814. here and

  815. you do

  816. believe,

  817. but not

  818. all the

  819. way,

  820. just kind

  821. of part

  822. way.

  823. I want

  824. to encourage

  825. you,

  826. surrender

  827. your life

  828. to Jesus,

  829. be baptized,

  830. make that

  831. declaration that

  832. he is the

  833. king.

  834. hand the

  835. reins of

  836. your life

  837. over to

  838. him

  839. completely.

  840. He is

  841. the good

  842. and gracious

  843. king.

  844. Maybe you're

  845. here and

  846. you've already

  847. done that,

  848. but the

  849. joy just

  850. isn't here.

  851. Have you

  852. drifted from

  853. Jesus'

  854. words?

  855. From

  856. prayer?

  857. Draw near

  858. to him

  859. again,

  860. and he

  861. will draw

  862. near to

  863. you.

  864. finally,

  865. there is

  866. a time

  867. to weep

  868. and mourn.

  869. Even

  870. Jesus

  871. cried

  872. and wept

  873. at times.

  874. We do

  875. still live

  876. in a

  877. broken

  878. world.

  879. Sometimes

  880. this joy

  881. that Jesus

  882. speaks of,

  883. it has

  884. to coexist

  885. in our

  886. hearts

  887. with grief

  888. and sorrow.

  889. But there

  890. is coming

  891. a day,

  892. Jesus

  893. said,

  894. when every

  895. tear

  896. will be

  897. wiped

  898. away.

  899. A day

  900. of no

  901. more sorrow,

  902. no more

  903. pain,

  904. no more

  905. crying.

  906. Jesus

  907. will return,

  908. he will

  909. reign,

  910. he will

  911. defeat and

  912. silence the

  913. devil forever,

  914. and God

  915. will make

  916. all things

  917. new.

  918. And this

  919. fullest of

  920. joys will

  921. be all

  922. that's left.

  923. It will be

  924. the only,

  925. it will be

  926. the always,

  927. forever,

  928. for all

  929. who belong

  930. to Jesus.

  931. I'll end

  932. with these

  933. words of

  934. Christ himself.

  935. Look,

  936. I am

  937. coming soon.

  938. And yes,

  939. I am

  940. coming soon.

  941. Amen.

  942. Come,

  943. Lord Jesus.

  944. Let's pray.

  945. Father in

  946. heaven,

  947. work this

  948. joy in

  949. us,

  950. we pray.

  951. Draw us

  952. closer into

  953. fellowship with

  954. you,

  955. relationship with

  956. you.

  957. Take us

  958. deeper than

  959. we've ever

  960. been with

  961. you before,

  962. and open

  963. up this

  964. fullness of

  965. joy that

  966. we all

  967. long to

  968. have.

  969. Strengthen

  970. us with

  971. that joy,

  972. we pray,

  973. for your

  974. glory.

  975. In Jesus'

  976. name,

  977. amen.
