  1. All right, well, this morning I'm going to completely abandon my usual style and method,

  2. and I'm going to tell you right at the start of the message what my main point is and what

  3. the aim is.

  4. This one's for you, Ellie.

  5. This morning, I want to encourage and motivate you to spend countless hours in 2023 with

  6. God in the pages of His Word.

  7. Now, I realize that Christmas is two weeks away, and probably the last thing on your

  8. mind right now is when and where and how much you will read the Bible this next year.

  9. I know that there's lots left to do in preparation for Christmas.

  10. We're just two weeks away, and there's probably shopping and preparations and decorating and

  11. cleaning and tidying, and the list goes on.

  12. And you're right, most of the things of 2023 can just wait until 2023.

  13. But there's one thing that I hope you'll start to think about now before you wake up to a

  14. new year, and it's arguably the most essential and important thing that we can give our time

  15. to in this new year ahead.

  16. It's so foundational to how this next year will go for you and for me.

  17. And so I am praying that by the end of this message, you will take a Bible reading plan

  18. off of the table right there at the back of the sanctuary and resolve to spend countless

  19. hours with our great God and Savior in the pages of His Word and follow through with it.

  20. Let me start by asking you this question.

  21. How do you want 2023 to go?

  22. What kind of year do you want it to be?

  23. Do you believe that the time you spend reading your Bible can make all the difference in the year ahead?

  24. What is this book?

  25. This is the most precious and valuable book on planet Earth.

  26. It's the collection of the many times and various ways that God has spoken to us.

  27. It's the true story of what's been going on in our world since God made it.

  28. And through these pages are written the very words that God has said to men and women and even

  29. children through the ages.

  30. There is no other book like this.

  31. If this book contains the very words of God,

  32. should we not read it and meditate on it again in this year ahead?

  33. Why spend countless hours scrolling through feeds filled with the words of men

  34. when we can spend countless hours turning through these pages that are filled with the words of the living God?

  35. I hope that some of my enthusiasm and passion is contagious,

  36. but I know that it's not enough to change your heart.

  37. And so this morning we want to look at a number of passages from God's Word

  38. that can motivate us and encourage us to give ourselves to His Word in the year ahead.

  39. We're going to start with John 17, verse 3.

    John 17:3

  40. All these passages will be on the screen.

  41. And my first reason out of five

  42. for why you should spend countless hours in God's Word in 2023

  43. is because this book is at the heart of our relationship with God.

  44. It's not just a history book or some ancient writings.

  45. This is a book through which we can have relationship with God.

  46. Jesus was praying to His Father in this passage in John 17.

  47. He said,

  48. Father, the hour has come.

  49. Glorify Your Son that Your Son may glorify You.

  50. For You granted Him authority over all people

  51. that He might give eternal life to all those You have given Him.

  52. Now this is eternal life,

  53. that they know You,

  54. the only true God,

  55. and Jesus Christ,

  56. whom You have sent.

  57. What is life?

  58. Let's just set aside that adjective eternal for just a moment.

  59. What is life?

  60. This is life,

  61. that they may know You,

  62. the only true God,

  63. and Jesus Christ,

  64. whom You have sent.

  65. How do we know who God is?

  66. We know it from His Word,

  67. from what He has said about Himself,

  68. and revealed to us in the pages of the Bible.

  69. How do we know who Jesus is?

  70. How do we get to know Him better?

  71. We know it through the eyewitnesses accounts

  72. that we have right here

  73. in the Word of God.

  74. Do you want to experience more fully

  75. that abundant life,

  76. that joy

  77. of having relationship with Christ

  78. in this year ahead?

  79. Then you need to get to know Him even better.

  80. And you can do that

  81. by spending countless hours

  82. reading and meditating

  83. on the things God has revealed

  84. about Himself in His book.

  85. This book is at the heart

  86. of our relationship with God.

  87. For my second point,

  88. I'm going to borrow a little from David Jeremiah

  89. and something I heard from him

  90. here in Sunday school a couple weeks back.

  91. This book is the place

  92. where our faith grows.

  93. Another reason why we should spend

  94. countless hours reading it

  95. in this coming year

  96. we often use this language

  97. of growing in our faith.

  98. And it sounds wonderful.

  99. Yeah, I want to grow in my faith.

  100. Can we grow in our faith?

  101. Well, the Bible says,

  102. yes.

  103. Paul, speaking to the church

  104. at Thessalonica,

  105. said this in 2 Thessalonians 1 verse 3.

    2 Thessalonians 1:3

  106. We ought always to thank God for you,

  107. brothers and sisters,

  108. and rightly so,

  109. because your faith is growing

  110. more and more.

  111. Can our faith grow?

  112. Yes, it can.

  113. It can increase.

  114. But how does it happen?

  115. Paul wrote this to the church at Rome.

  116. Romans 10 verse 17.

    Romans 10:17

  117. Faith comes from hearing

  118. and hearing from the word of Christ

  119. or hearing from the word of God

  120. depending on your translation.

  121. The point Paul's making here

  122. is that faith comes

  123. when we hear the word of God.

  124. We cannot trust

  125. unless we have something

  126. to trust in.

  127. And God has spoken.

  128. He's given us words.

  129. He's revealed himself to us

  130. so that we could put our faith

  131. in him

  132. and in his word.

  133. And so we can grow

  134. in our faith in God

  135. as we hear and read

  136. and come to understand

  137. more about him.

  138. And the more that we know him

  139. in these pages of his word,

  140. the more we trust him.

  141. The more we see

  142. just how trustworthy he is.

  143. So this book, the Bible,

  144. is the place

  145. where our faith grows

  146. because this is the place

  147. where God speaks.

  148. And think about this.

  149. We want to grow in our faith.

  150. The more that we trust God,

  151. the more faith we have in him,

  152. it changes and affects

  153. everything in our lives,

  154. doesn't it?

  155. Worry gives way to the peace

  156. that passes all understanding.

  157. The problems and the challenges

  158. that we face in our daily lives,

  159. they begin to shrink

  160. as our faith grows

  161. because we know

  162. the good and gracious king

  163. who has promised

  164. to carry us through them.

  165. The one who calms storms

  166. with a word.

  167. As our faith grows,

  168. God leads us down paths

  169. that we might have been reluctant

  170. to choose.

  171. Paths that really will

  172. spare us hardship

  173. and heartache,

  174. pain and trouble.

  175. This book, the Bible,

  176. is the place

  177. where our faith grows.

  178. Do you want your faith

  179. to increase in 2023?

  180. Do you want all the benefits

  181. that come with that?

  182. Then resolve

  183. to spend countless hours

  184. in this coming year

  185. in God's word,

  186. in the greenhouse of faith,

  187. the pages of his word.

  188. number three.

  189. This book is the place

  190. where we find everything

  191. we need for life.

  192. 2 Peter 1, verse 3.

    2 Peter 1:3

  193. Peter writes and he says,

  194. God's divine power

  195. has given us

  196. everything we need

  197. for a godly life

  198. through our knowledge

  199. of him

  200. who called us

  201. by his own glory

  202. and goodness.

  203. Through these,

  204. he has given us

  205. his very great

  206. and precious promises

  207. so that through them

  208. you may participate

  209. in the divine nature,

  210. having escaped the corruption

  211. in the world

  212. caused by evil desires.

  213. Do you hear this?

  214. We know that God's words

  215. are powerful.

  216. When we go back

  217. to the beginning,

  218. Genesis chapter 1,

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  219. we read about

  220. how God's words

  221. brought the whole universe

  222. into being.

  223. He spoke and it was.

  224. That same divine power

  225. has also provided you and me

  226. with everything we need

  227. for a godly life.

  228. for life

  229. and godliness.

  230. How does it come to us?

  231. Through our knowledge

  232. of him.

  233. There it is again.

  234. How do we get to know him?

  235. Through the pages

  236. of his word.

  237. This is where he has

  238. revealed himself

  239. through the centuries.

  240. So this book

  241. is the place

  242. where we find

  243. everything

  244. that we need

  245. for a godly life.

  246. Now we might be tempted

  247. to push back here

  248. and say,

  249. really?

  250. Everything?

  251. You know,

  252. I believe the Bible

  253. has lots to help me

  254. with some things.

  255. Maybe spiritual things,

  256. maybe the things

  257. about salvation.

  258. But everything?

  259. Well, I didn't write this.

  260. This is

  261. God's own word.

  262. Everything

  263. we need

  264. for life

  265. and godliness

  266. or for a godly life,

  267. God's word

  268. provides us

  269. with the knowledge

  270. of God

  271. that we need.

  272. That's what it says.

  273. I think that's what it means.

  274. Think about it.

  275. What does God's word,

  276. the Bible,

  277. touch on?

  278. does it not provide

  279. the comprehensive framework

  280. and understanding

  281. of all that we need

  282. to know

  283. for life,

  284. for a godly life?

  285. It tells us

  286. how the universe began,

  287. where life came from,

  288. where we came from,

  289. how and why

  290. God made us,

  291. what the purpose

  292. of our lives is,

  293. how defying God

  294. ruined everything,

  295. how God

  296. in his goodness

  297. has been working

  298. mercifully

  299. to redeem

  300. and save

  301. and restore.

  302. It gives us

  303. many pictures

  304. of how everything

  305. will come

  306. to its final end

  307. in our world,

  308. what the final destiny

  309. will be for the universe

  310. and everything in it.

  311. This book

  312. reveals to us

  313. who God is,

  314. his glory,

  315. his many wonderful

  316. attributes,

  317. how he relates

  318. to all kinds

  319. of people

  320. in all kinds

  321. of situations.

  322. This book

  323. is full of wise words

  324. and loving instruction

  325. for every area

  326. of life,

  327. from the beginning

  328. of life

  329. to the end

  330. of life.

  331. God gives us

  332. what he knows

  333. is essential

  334. for relationships,

  335. for marriage,

  336. for parenting,

  337. finances,

  338. prayer,

  339. worship,

  340. work,

  341. administration,

  342. planning,

  343. speaking,

  344. justice,

  345. for knowing good

  346. and evil,

  347. for helping

  348. the needy,

  349. for how to

  350. prioritize,

  351. for character

  352. building,

  353. for encouraging

  354. those who are

  355. discouraged,

  356. for how to live

  357. together as the

  358. people of God

  359. back then

  360. and today,

  361. for how to make

  362. peace with others,

  363. for how to endure

  364. hardship and suffering,

  365. for how to handle

  366. temptation,

  367. for how to make

  368. decisions,

  369. for how to act

  370. wisely in countless

  371. practical ways,

  372. for how to love

  373. and be a neighbor.

  374. And the list

  375. could go on.

  376. This book

  377. really does

  378. reveal to us

  379. everything that we

  380. need for life,

  381. for a godly life.

  382. It touches on

  383. every emotion

  384. that we will

  385. experience.

  386. It speaks to us

  387. about what to do

  388. with all of them,

  389. whether it's anger

  390. or frustration

  391. or grief

  392. or unforgiveness

  393. or bitterness,

  394. sorrow,

  395. worry,

  396. anxiety,

  397. fear,

  398. doubt and unbelief,

  399. joy,

  400. happiness,

  401. passion,

  402. zeal,

  403. laziness,

  404. apathy,

  405. the list goes on.

  406. It speaks to all

  407. of it.

  408. And what's so

  409. beautiful about

  410. this book is that

  411. it doesn't just

  412. come to us

  413. all this knowledge

  414. of God in the

  415. form of a rule book

  416. or a dictionary

  417. or an encyclopedia.

  418. God gives it all

  419. through a great

  420. variety of genres.

  421. History

  422. and poetry,

  423. law

  424. and love song,

  425. liturgy

  426. and victory

  427. chant,

  428. proverbs

  429. and parables,

  430. spectacular

  431. visions

  432. and dreams,

  433. records

  434. and personal

  435. letters,

  436. covenants

  437. and confessions,

  438. prophecies

  439. and proclamation,

  440. wisdom

  441. and oracle,

  442. all of these

  443. woven together

  444. through the

  445. great narrative

  446. telling us

  447. the story

  448. of God

  449. and of us

  450. and our world.

  451. This book

  452. really is the place

  453. where we find

  454. everything we need

  455. for life

  456. and godliness,

  457. the place

  458. where we grow

  459. in our knowledge

  460. of God.

  461. So,

  462. why should we

  463. spend countless

  464. hours

  465. in God's words

  466. in 2023?

  467. three,

  468. we've heard

  469. a few

  470. different reasons.

  471. Number one,

  472. this book

  473. is at the heart

  474. of our relationship

  475. with God.

  476. This book

  477. is the place

  478. where our faith

  479. grows.

  480. This book

  481. is the place

  482. where we find

  483. everything we need

  484. for life

  485. and godliness.

  486. And number four,

  487. this book

  488. is full

  489. of very

  490. great

  491. and precious

  492. promises.

  493. We're still

  494. in 2 Peter

  495. chapter one

  496. verse four.

  497. Peter says,

  498. through these,

  499. through his

  500. greatness

  501. and glory,

  502. he has given

  503. us his very

  504. great

  505. and precious

  506. promises

  507. so that through

  508. them you may

  509. participate

  510. in the divine

  511. nature.

  512. Having escaped

  513. the corruption

  514. in the world

  515. caused by evil

  516. desires.

  517. Do you know

  518. that the Bible

  519. is full

  520. of very

  521. great

  522. and precious

  523. promises?

  524. One pastor

  525. said it this way.

  526. He said,

  527. the entire Bible

  528. can be summed

  529. up like this.

  530. Old Testament

  531. promises

  532. made.

  533. New Testament

  534. promises

  535. kept.

  536. God's word

  537. is full

  538. of promises

  539. and not

  540. just any

  541. old promises

  542. but very

  543. great

  544. promises.

  545. Precious

  546. promises.

  547. And as we

  548. read through

  549. God's word

  550. we see that

  551. we see part

  552. of why they're

  553. so precious

  554. is because

  555. God always

  556. keeps his

  557. promises.

  558. He is

  559. faithful.

  560. He proves

  561. it over

  562. and over

  563. and over

  564. again

  565. throughout

  566. history.

  567. Let me

  568. ask you

  569. something.

  570. Do you

  571. want to

  572. know

  573. all that

  574. God has

  575. in store

  576. for you?

  577. If you

  578. are a

  579. Christian,

  580. if you

  581. are a

  582. believer

  583. in Jesus?

  584. I do.

  585. It's all

  586. in here.

  587. Countless

  588. promises.

  589. Both the

  590. details of

  591. what he

  592. has promised

  593. and the

  594. assurance

  595. that he

  596. will deliver

  597. on those

  598. promises

  599. through our

  600. relationship

  601. with Jesus.

  602. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 1:20

  603. chapter 1

  604. verse 20.

  605. I love

  606. this verse.

  607. Paul says,

  608. for no matter

  609. how many

  610. promises God

  611. has made,

  612. they are

  613. yes in

  614. Christ.

  615. It's as

  616. though Paul

  617. reflects back

  618. on all the

  619. promises God

  620. has made

  621. throughout

  622. history,

  623. throughout the

  624. Old Testament

  625. and he

  626. says,

  627. the answer

  628. to all

  629. of them

  630. is yes,

  631. I will

  632. do that

  633. for you

  634. through Jesus

  635. Christ,

  636. my son,

  637. through the

  638. union that

  639. we have

  640. with him

  641. when we

  642. come to

  643. believe and

  644. be born

  645. again.

  646. God keeps

  647. every promise

  648. he's ever

  649. made to

  650. Jesus,

  651. the son of

  652. man,

  653. and all

  654. those who

  655. have been

  656. united with

  657. him through

  658. his death

  659. and resurrection

  660. by faith.

  661. It's a

  662. wonderful

  663. assurance that

  664. God gives.

  665. But notice

  666. what else

  667. Peter has

  668. to say

  669. about these

  670. very great

  671. and precious

  672. promises.

  673. He has

  674. given us

  675. his very

  676. great and

  677. precious

  678. promises so

  679. that through

  680. them you

  681. may participate

  682. in the

  683. divine nature.

  684. What does

  685. that mean?

  686. I love

  687. this verse.

  688. God speaking

  689. through Peter,

  690. God is

  691. not afraid

  692. to tell

  693. us how

  694. close we

  695. can get

  696. to him

  697. through his

  698. promises.

  699. We get

  700. so close

  701. to God

  702. through the

  703. promises that

  704. we find in

  705. the pages

  706. of his

  707. word that

  708. we become

  709. partakers

  710. of the

  711. divine

  712. nature.

  713. Would you

  714. like to

  715. partake

  716. of God's

  717. divine

  718. nature?

  719. Would you

  720. like to

  721. participate

  722. and be

  723. brought

  724. into

  725. this

  726. wonderful

  727. person,

  728. God,

  729. this

  730. glorious

  731. God?

  732. Would you

  733. like to

  734. have that

  735. most intimate

  736. of relationships

  737. with him?

  738. Peter says

  739. that's what

  740. these very

  741. great and

  742. precious

  743. promises

  744. do for

  745. us.

  746. That's where

  747. they lead

  748. us.

  749. Now some

  750. of you

  751. might be

  752. thinking,

  753. whoa,

  754. this sounds

  755. close to

  756. blasphemy.

  757. Are you

  758. saying that

  759. we are

  760. going to

  761. become

  762. God?

  763. No.

  764. Let me

  765. clarify.

  766. Peter's not

  767. saying that

  768. we become

  769. God,

  770. but that

  771. we become

  772. partakers

  773. in God's

  774. nature.

  775. How does

  776. it work?

  777. Well,

  778. elsewhere,

  779. Jesus and

  780. Paul teach

  781. us very

  782. clearly that

  783. we who

  784. believe in

  785. Christ and

  786. are born

  787. again by

  788. his spirit

  789. we become

  790. one with

  791. Jesus.

  792. We are

  793. united to

  794. Christ so

  795. deeply,

  796. born again

  797. by his

  798. spirit.

  799. So much

  800. so are we

  801. one, are we

  802. united that

  803. we are said

  804. to be co-heirs

  805. with Christ,

  806. sons of

  807. God,

  808. adopted into

  809. the family.

  810. We get to

  811. share in

  812. Christ's

  813. glory.

  814. we get to

  815. share in

  816. his reign.

  817. And there

  818. are many

  819. things that

  820. Christ has

  821. that we

  822. will have

  823. forever.

  824. Life,

  825. immortality,

  826. holiness,

  827. perfection,

  828. incorruptibility,

  829. glory.

  830. And like

  831. Jesus, we

  832. will have the

  833. most intimate

  834. relationship with

  835. God that

  836. we can

  837. ever imagine.

  838. Let's look at

  839. a couple

  840. quick passages.

  841. Colossians

    Colossians 1:27

  842. chapter 1

  843. verse 27.

  844. To them

  845. God has

  846. chosen to

  847. make known

  848. among the

  849. Gentiles the

  850. glorious riches

  851. of this

  852. mystery which

  853. is Christ

  854. in you.

  855. The hope

  856. of glory.

  857. A little

  858. later in the

  859. same letter,

  860. Colossians

    Colossians 3:3

  861. chapter 3

  862. verses 3

  863. and 4,

  864. Paul says

  865. to them,

  866. for you

  867. died and

  868. your life

  869. is now

  870. hidden with

  871. Christ in

  872. God.

  873. When Christ

  874. who is your

  875. life appears,

  876. you also

  877. will appear

  878. with him

  879. in glory.

  880. There's this

  881. union that

  882. we have

  883. with Jesus.

  884. And a

  885. passage we

  886. haven't got

  887. to yet in

  888. John chapter

    John 17 chapter mention

  889. 17 is

  890. Jesus prays

  891. to his

  892. father.

  893. He says,

  894. my prayer is

  895. not for my

  896. disciples alone,

  897. that's the

  898. ones with

  899. him that

  900. evening.

  901. I pray

  902. also for

  903. those who

  904. will believe

  905. in me

  906. through their

  907. message,

  908. that all of

  909. them may be

  910. one,

  911. Father,

  912. just as you

  913. are in me

  914. and I

  915. am in you.

  916. May they

  917. also be in

  918. us so that

  919. the world

  920. may believe

  921. that you

  922. have sent

  923. me.

  924. I have

  925. given them

  926. the glory

  927. that you

  928. gave me,

  929. that they

  930. may be

  931. one as

  932. we are

  933. one.

  934. I in

  935. them and

  936. you in

  937. me so

  938. that they

  939. may be

  940. brought to

  941. complete

  942. unity.

  943. These are

  944. wonderful

  945. words.

  946. There is

  947. only one

  948. God and

  949. there will

  950. only ever

  951. be one

  952. God.

  953. We

  954. sometimes

  955. refer to

  956. God as

  957. the

  958. Trinity,

  959. Father,

  960. Son,

  961. and Holy

  962. Spirit.

  963. And the

  964. good news

  965. of Jesus

  966. is that

  967. we by

  968. faith can

  969. become

  970. united to

  971. a member

  972. of the

  973. Trinity,

  974. united with

  975. Christ,

  976. that he

  977. and his

  978. spirit live

  979. in us

  980. and we

  981. in them.

  982. And so

  983. God lives

  984. in us

  985. and we

  986. in him.

  987. We can

  988. become

  989. partakers

  990. in this

  991. way of

  992. his divine

  993. nature.

  994. And this

  995. comes as a

  996. gift of

  997. his glory

  998. and goodness

  999. through

  1000. his promises.

  1001. through

  1002. believing

  1003. his promises

  1004. and receiving

  1005. what they

  1006. offer.

  1007. So we

  1008. ought to

  1009. give

  1010. ourselves

  1011. to

  1012. countless

  1013. hours

  1014. in this

  1015. book,

  1016. carefully

  1017. reading it,

  1018. meditating on

  1019. it in this

  1020. year ahead,

  1021. because it's

  1022. through the

  1023. promises found

  1024. here that we

  1025. can become

  1026. partakers of

  1027. the divine

  1028. nature,

  1029. lovingly

  1030. joined to

  1031. God

  1032. forever.

  1033. this book

  1034. is full

  1035. of

  1036. very

  1037. great

  1038. and

  1039. precious

  1040. promises

  1041. which

  1042. believed

  1043. and

  1044. embraced

  1045. will

  1046. lead us

  1047. up

  1048. into

  1049. the

  1050. glory

  1051. of

  1052. God,

  1053. into

  1054. union

  1055. with

  1056. God,

  1057. through

  1058. union

  1059. with

  1060. Christ.

  1061. There's a

  1062. second half

  1063. to this

  1064. one,

  1065. a part

  1066. B for

  1067. those of

  1068. you who

  1069. love

  1070. outlines.

  1071. God's

  1072. very

  1073. great

  1074. and precious

  1075. promises,

  1076. not only do

  1077. they make

  1078. us

  1079. partakers

  1080. of the

  1081. divine

  1082. nature,

  1083. but it's

  1084. actually

  1085. through

  1086. them that

  1087. we are

  1088. empowered

  1089. to

  1090. overcome

  1091. evil

  1092. here in

  1093. the world

  1094. right now.

  1095. Back to

  1096. 2 Peter 1

    2 Peter 1:4

  1097. verse 4.

  1098. He has

  1099. given us

  1100. his very

  1101. great and

  1102. precious

  1103. promises so

  1104. that through

  1105. them you

  1106. may participate

  1107. in the

  1108. divine

  1109. nature,

  1110. having

  1111. escaped

  1112. the

  1113. corruption

  1114. in the

  1115. world

  1116. caused

  1117. by evil

  1118. desires.

  1119. How do

  1120. we

  1121. break

  1122. free

  1123. from

  1124. the

  1125. allure

  1126. of

  1127. sin?

  1128. How do

  1129. we win

  1130. the battle

  1131. when we're

  1132. tempted

  1133. and enticed

  1134. to do

  1135. evil?

  1136. How are we

  1137. set free

  1138. from the

  1139. corruption

  1140. in this

  1141. world?

  1142. Peter says

  1143. it's by,

  1144. it's through

  1145. the very

  1146. great and

  1147. precious

  1148. promises

  1149. that God

  1150. has made.

  1151. Now what

  1152. does that

  1153. mean?

  1154. what does

  1155. that look

  1156. like?

  1157. Sin and

  1158. temptation

  1159. make promises

  1160. to us as

  1161. well.

  1162. Do this

  1163. thing and

  1164. it will make

  1165. you happy.

  1166. Try this

  1167. thing over

  1168. here, it

  1169. will satisfy

  1170. you, it

  1171. will give

  1172. you what

  1173. you long

  1174. for.

  1175. And these

  1176. promises that

  1177. sin and

  1178. temptation make,

  1179. they're powerful.

  1180. We feel them

  1181. so deeply.

  1182. But these

  1183. promises of

  1184. sin and

  1185. temptation start

  1186. to lose their

  1187. power and

  1188. their appeal

  1189. when we see

  1190. the far

  1191. greater promises

  1192. that God

  1193. has made to

  1194. us, to

  1195. those who

  1196. love him.

  1197. Let me give

  1198. an example.

  1199. I'd love to

  1200. be rich and

  1201. have all the

  1202. pleasures and

  1203. comforts of

  1204. this world.

  1205. But Christ

  1206. warns me that

  1207. if I were

  1208. even able to

  1209. obtain all of

  1210. that, it

  1211. wouldn't last.

  1212. the day

  1213. would come

  1214. when my

  1215. life would

  1216. be demanded

  1217. from me.

  1218. Death will

  1219. come knocking

  1220. on my

  1221. door.

  1222. And so

  1223. Jesus promises

  1224. me that if

  1225. I give up

  1226. my life for

  1227. me in this

  1228. world and

  1229. lay it down,

  1230. die to

  1231. myself and

  1232. follow him,

  1233. he will give

  1234. me something

  1235. far greater

  1236. that does

  1237. last forever,

  1238. eternal life

  1239. and the

  1240. salvation of

  1241. my soul for

  1242. eternity.

  1243. This is

  1244. just one of

  1245. many very

  1246. great and

  1247. precious promises

  1248. that kills

  1249. the appeal

  1250. of earthly

  1251. riches.

  1252. It breaks

  1253. the power of

  1254. greed.

  1255. It helps us

  1256. escape the

  1257. corruption in

  1258. the world

  1259. caused by

  1260. evil desire,

  1261. specifically the

  1262. evil desire to

  1263. get more and

  1264. more and more

  1265. and more for

  1266. myself.

  1267. And amazingly,

  1268. this promise of

  1269. Christ breaks

  1270. the power of

  1271. greed by

  1272. offering me

  1273. a superior

  1274. treasure.

  1275. Something that

  1276. just when I get

  1277. my gaze on it,

  1278. it enables me to

  1279. let go of the

  1280. treasures of this

  1281. world, the

  1282. things this world

  1283. loves so dearly.

  1284. It's truly a

  1285. wonderful thing.

  1286. How does God

  1287. help us win

  1288. against temptation?

  1289. He offers

  1290. more.

  1291. He guarantees

  1292. something better

  1293. in its place.

  1294. Superior

  1295. pleasures,

  1296. delights,

  1297. experiences,

  1298. greater possessions

  1299. than this earth

  1300. contains for a

  1301. life that never

  1302. ends in the

  1303. glorious kingdom

  1304. of God when

  1305. Jesus returns.

  1306. The promises of

  1307. God give us the

  1308. power that we

  1309. need to say

  1310. no to temptation

  1311. and to evil

  1312. desires.

  1313. Which means

  1314. that to

  1315. overcome sin

  1316. and temptation

  1317. in 2023,

  1318. we need to

  1319. keep these

  1320. very great

  1321. and precious

  1322. promises right

  1323. there in front

  1324. of us.

  1325. Reading them,

  1326. meditating on

  1327. them, even

  1328. memorizing them.

  1329. Do you see the

  1330. benefit of spending

  1331. countless hours

  1332. in these pages

  1333. days in the

  1334. year ahead?

  1335. This book is at

  1336. the heart of our

  1337. relationship with

  1338. God.

  1339. This book is the

  1340. place where our

  1341. faith grows.

  1342. This book is the

  1343. place where we find

  1344. everything we need

  1345. for life.

1346. This book is full of

  1347. very great and

  1348. precious promises

  1349. which enable us to

  1350. partake in the

  1351. divine nature and

  1352. escape the

  1353. corruption in the

  1354. world caused by

  1355. evil desires.

  1356. And number

  1357. five, this book

  1358. is full of the

  1359. instructions that

  1360. we need to

  1361. stand firm

  1362. through 2023 and

  1363. through the rest

  1364. of our lives.

  1365. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 7:24

  1366. 7, verse 24.

  1367. Jesus said this,

  1368. he said,

  1369. everyone who

  1370. hears these

  1371. words of mine

  1372. and puts them

  1373. into practice is

  1374. like a wise man

  1375. who built his

  1376. house on the

  1377. rock.

  1378. The rain came

  1379. down and the

  1380. streams rose and

  1381. the winds blew

  1382. and beat against

  1383. that house, yet it

  1384. did not fall because

  1385. it had its foundation

  1386. on the rock.

  1387. But everyone who

  1388. hears these words

  1389. of mine and does

  1390. not put them into

  1391. practice is like a

  1392. foolish man who

  1393. built his house on

  1394. sand.

  1395. The rain came

  1396. down, the streams

  1397. rose and the winds

  1398. blew and beat

  1399. against that house

  1400. and it fell.

  1401. with a great

  1402. crash.

  1403. This little

  1404. parable gives us

  1405. such a powerful

  1406. illustration.

  1407. How will you

  1408. fare through the

  1409. storms, through the

  1410. challenges, through

  1411. the difficulties of

  1412. this coming year,

  1413. 2023?

  1414. Jesus says it all

  1415. depends on whether

  1416. you hear his words

  1417. and put them into

  1418. practice.

  1419. practice.

1420. And to put them into

  1421. practice, you must

  1422. first hear what he

  1423. has to say.

  1424. And to hear what

  1425. Jesus says, you must

  1426. spend time in this

  1427. book listening to

1428. what he has to say.

  1429. Jesus says if you

  1430. hear his words and

  1431. don't put them into

  1432. practice, you're a

  1433. fool.

  1434. You're an idiot.

  1435. The way you're living

1436. your life is like a

  1437. guy building his main

  1438. residence on the

  1439. sand of a beach.

  1440. church.

  1441. How short-sighted.

  1442. It's going to be a

  1443. disaster.

1444. Why is he a fool?

  1445. Because he was told

  1446. where and how he

  1447. should build it.

  1448. And he chose to

  1449. ignore it.

  1450. Foolishness.

  1451. But there's something

  1452. even more foolish

  1453. than this.

  1454. The person who has

  1455. all the words of

  1456. Christ right here

  1457. in his Bible

  1458. and doesn't even

  1459. open it to listen,

  1460. to hear.

  1461. Imagine that you

  1462. were there as Jesus

  1463. was speaking these

  1464. words to the crowd.

  1465. And you look beside

  1466. you and there's this

  1467. guy there who's got a

  1468. scowl on his face.

  1469. And he takes his

  1470. fingers and he puts

  1471. them in his ears.

  1472. I don't need to

  1473. listen to this guy.

  1474. That's you.

  1475. That's me.

1476. When we look at our

  1477. Bible sitting on the

  1478. shelf or on the

  1479. coffee table and say,

  1480. eh, I don't need to

  1481. do that.

  1482. I've got better

  1483. things to do, more

  1484. important things to

  1485. do.

  1486. That's boring.

  1487. You're an idiot,

  1488. says Jesus.

  1489. You're a fool.

  1490. If you disregard my

  1491. words, the house of

  1492. your life will go

  1493. splat.

  1494. So let's resolve

  1495. today, before this

1496. new year, to not be

  1497. idiots and fools, let's

  1498. resolve today to spend

  1499. countless hours with

  1500. Jesus, listening to

  1501. his word, reading it,

  1502. meditating on it in

  1503. 2023.

1504. This book is at the

  1505. heart of our

  1506. relationship with God.

  1507. This book is the

  1508. place where our faith

  1509. grows.

  1510. This book is the

  1511. place where we find

  1512. everything we need for

  1513. life.

  1514. It's full of very

  1515. great and precious

  1516. promises, and it's

  1517. full of the instructions

1518. that we need to stand

  1519. firm through 2023 and

1520. the rest of our lives.

  1521. As elders, we were

  1522. talking about this, and

  1523. we've agreed that each

1524. of us elders are going to

  1525. read through the Bible,

  1526. the whole thing, in

  1527. 2023.

1528. We want this to be the

  1529. normal for those in

  1530. leadership in our

  1531. church.

  1532. kind of the unwritten

  1533. expectation for everyone

1534. who serves as an elder in

  1535. this church, that every

  1536. year we carefully and

  1537. prayerfully read through

  1538. God's word, cover to

  1539. cover.

1540. And we want to encourage

1541. all of you, we want to

1542. invite you to join us, to

1543. read God's word with us.

1544. And so on the table at the

  1545. back, we've made available a

1546. few different kinds of Bible

1547. reading plans so that you can

  1548. do that.

  1549. Now, we know that

  1550. everybody's at a different

  1551. place.

1552. For some of you, you've

  1553. maybe never tried this

  1554. before.

1555. And so reading through the

1556. whole Bible may be a bit

  1557. much for you.

  1558. We've got a plan for you.

1559. Five by five by five plan,

1560. five minutes a day, five

1561. days a week, read through

1562. the whole New Testament in

  1563. the year.

1564. And you get two days a week

1565. just to catch up and

1566. reflect in case you get

  1567. behind.

  1568. We've got a plan for kids.

1569. We want all the kids to

  1570. read.

  1571. Parents, help your kids

  1572. read through God's word

  1573. this year.

  1574. We've got a plan back

  1575. there called the sweeter

  1576. than honey plan.

1577. And it just takes kids

  1578. right through select

  1579. chapters through the main

1580. story of the Bible with a

1581. good mix of old and new

  1582. testaments, Psalms, and

  1583. Proverbs.

  1584. If you're thinking, yeah, I

1585. want to feast on God's word

  1586. this year.

1587. Give me the whole Bible this

  1588. year.

1589. We've got two plans for you.

1590. We've got one that takes you

  1591. through the Old Testament

  1592. chronologically.

1593. It even puts the Psalms and

1594. the prophets in their place

1595. in the narrative so you can

1596. kind of know when they

1597. happen and when they spoke.

1598. That's at the back there.

  1599. And we've got a plan called

1600. the book at a time plan where

1601. you just work through a book

1602. at a time alternating back

1603. and forth between the Old

  1604. and the New Testament.

1605. And all of these plans are

1606. just 25 readings per month so

1607. you get days for catch up and

  1608. reflection.

  1609. Christian, and let's do

  1610. this.

1611. This could be a really good

1612. year for us as a church.

1613. This is how we grow in our

  1614. faith as a church.

  1615. If you're really up for a

  1616. challenge, maybe you've

  1617. already been through the

1618. Bible several times and you

1619. just want to go deeper, I've

1620. got something special for you.

1621. I will give you your own copy

1622. of the Holman Bible Atlas with

1623. all the maps, all the stuff that

1624. talks about what happened in

  1625. those trickier parts, where

1626. the Assyrian Empire went down

1627. to attack and blah, blah,

  1628. blah, blah, blah.

  1629. It's all back there.

1630. You can have a look at that

1631. and just throw your name down

  1632. there.

1633. If you want a copy of that, I

1634. will give that to you as my

  1635. Christmas gift this year.

1636. Read through it with your

1637. Bible reading plan this year.

  1638. Finally, if you don't have a

1639. Bible, we would love to just

1640. give you one as a church.

1641. We've got Bibles for kids of a

  1642. couple different ages.

1643. We've got Bibles for just nice

1644. Bibles for you if you're an

1645. adult and we would be happy to

  1646. just give you that.

1647. We want to see you know God and

1648. know his son Jesus and we want

1649. this to be an awesome year for

  1650. everyone.

  1651. Let's pray.

1652. Father in heaven, thank you for

1653. the gift of your word.

1654. I pray and ask that you would

1655. work in our hearts, that we would

1656. hunger and thirst for it, that we

1657. would know that we do not live by

1658. bread alone, but by every word that

  1659. proceeds from your mouth.

1660. Work that into each one of us, we

  1661. pray in Jesus' name.

  1662. Amen.
