  1. with the Lord's table, we want to take time to reflect on what Jesus has done for us.

  2. And so we're turning to the letter that Paul wrote to the church at Rome this morning to do that.

  3. Now, this letter of Paul's is a challenging letter.

  4. It's much easier to just read through the narratives of the Gospels,

  5. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, than it is to read through this letter.

  6. This letter is packed.

  7. In fact, Paul is known for making the most of every word and not wasting any breath.

  8. He's got some of the longest sentences in the Bible.

  9. And here, in this letter, he's making a case for some very important truths.

  10. And all of these important truths have to do with the Gospel, the good news of Jesus.

  11. And he takes almost the entire letter to logically build his argument,

  12. and he touches these various truths and themes together throughout as he builds his argument

  13. to bring forth what he wants to say about the Gospel of Jesus.

  14. So it's hard to just dip into this book for a little bit this morning,

  15. but we can't just leave it off to the side and avoid it.

  16. So we're going to go into Romans this morning and do some work to try to dig into this

  17. and see something for ourselves here this morning.

  18. Romans is all about the Gospel.

  19. It's all about the Gospel.

  20. And that's kind of an old word.

  21. Maybe some of you are like, what's the Gospel, you know?

  22. It comes from an older English word, God spell,

  23. which literally, broken apart, means good news or message or word.

  24. And this is what Paul wanted to tell the Roman Church about,

  25. the good news of Jesus.

  26. And not just the church at Rome.

  27. This good news that Paul is so eager to share,

  28. he's been preaching this all over the Mediterranean world,

  29. from city to city to city.

  30. Now, what is the Gospel, this good news of Jesus?

  31. If you're a member, this is a question that we asked you last year during membership review,

  32. to put it into your own words.

  33. What is the Gospel?

  34. And some of you gave the more typical Sunday school answer,

  35. that Jesus came, died on the cross for our sins,

  36. to atone for them, so that we could be forgiven,

  37. and so that we could receive eternal life.

  38. And that is the heart of the good news.

  39. But some of you others pointed to other things

  40. that are part of the larger story of the Gospel.

  41. Because the good news of Jesus is big.

  42. It's not just a few little things that Jesus has done for us.

  43. It's a big, deep, rich, full package deal of blessing,

  44. and grace, and favor that comes to us through Jesus.

  45. Let's listen to what Paul has to say about this back in the beginning of his letter.

  46. You can stay in chapter 3, it'll be on the screen here.

  47. Back in chapter 1, verse 14, he says,

  48. I'm obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks,

  49. both to the wise and the foolish.

  50. That's why I'm so eager to preach the Gospel also to you who are in Rome.

  51. For I'm not ashamed of the Gospel,

  52. because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes,

  53. first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.

  54. Proclaiming and sharing the good news about Jesus is Paul's calling,

  55. it's his mission, it's his passion.

  56. You can just hear it in his words.

  57. But now after telling us this, we expect Paul to go on to share the good news,

  58. to tell us what is the Gospel about Jesus.

  59. And we half expect Paul to just maybe tell us the story,

  60. much like Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John did.

  61. Paul, what's the Gospel?

  62. What's the good news of Jesus?

  63. Well, amazingly, this entire letter of Romans is Paul's answer to that question.

  64. And he has a very different way of explaining and saying it than Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John.

  65. Why?

  66. Because the good news of Jesus, as I said before,

  67. it's more than just a few things that Jesus did for us.

  68. It's a rich and deep, wonderful multitude of things

  69. that God has been planning from long ago

  70. and has now brought to pass through his son Jesus

  71. for the benefit of those who believe in him.

  72. So this is how Paul introduces the good news of Jesus here in Romans.

  73. He says,

  74. I'm not ashamed of the Gospel because it is the power of God

  75. that brings salvation to everyone who believes,

  76. first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.

  77. He goes on,

  78. For in the Gospel, the righteousness of God is revealed.

  79. A righteousness that is by faith from first to last.

  80. Now that's probably not the words that most of us would choose

  81. to describe the Gospel.

  82. Somebody asked you,

  83. What's the Gospel?

  84. Probably most of us would not be thinking in our minds,

  85. Let me tell you,

  86. It's the story of the righteousness of God.

  87. But that's exactly how Paul answers the question.

  88. And then he begins to explain what he means by that.

  89. He goes on to explain in these first few chapters

  90. the big story of our world.

  91. How mankind has rejected and rebelled against God.

  92. How man has been living unrighteously.

  93. And because of this,

  94. He says,

  95. All humanity stands guilty before God.

  96. God's justice hangs over us.

  97. It's been revealed that we deserve God's righteous wrath,

  98. says Paul.

  99. His just punishment for the sins that we have committed.

  100. This is chapters 1, 2, and the first part of chapter 3.

    Isaiah 1 chapter mention

  101. And in the midst of this, Paul also says,

  102. Just in case there are any of you who are thinking,

  103. Well, that doesn't apply to me.

  104. Like, I'm a good person.

  105. I haven't been doing a bunch of wicked things and sinning.

  106. I'm not guilty of that.

  107. I've been keeping God's commands.

  108. I've been living a good, a righteous life.

  109. Just in case anybody's thinking this,

  110. Paul says,

  111. For them,

  112. No.

  113. You too are guilty before God.

  114. Because nobody has kept God's holy law

  115. well enough to be righteous in His sight.

  116. I'm paraphrasing.

  117. I'm summing it up here.

  118. Some of you, says Paul,

  119. are hypocritical,

  120. self-righteous,

  121. proud.

  122. You think you are good.

  123. You think you're righteous.

  124. But it's all an external show that you put on

  125. while in your hearts

  126. wickedness.

  127. You're far from God.

  128. You don't love Him.

  129. You don't fear Him.

  130. No.

  131. Everybody, says Paul,

  132. is guilty before God.

  133. Listen to how Paul says it here now

  134. in chapter 3,

  135. verse 9.

  136. We have already made the charge

  137. that Jews and Gentiles alike

  138. are all under the power of sin.

  139. As it is written,

  140. there is no one righteous.

  141. Not even one.

  142. There is no one who understands.

  143. There is no one who seeks God.

  144. All have turned away.

  145. They have together become worthless.

  146. There is no one who does good.

  147. Not even one.

  148. Their throats are open graves.

  149. Their tongues practice deceit.

  150. The poison of vipers is on their lips.

  151. Their mouths are full of cursing

  152. and bitterness.

  153. Their feet are swift to shed blood.

  154. Ruin and misery mark their ways.

  155. And the way of peace they do not know.

  156. There is no fear of God

  157. before their eyes.

  158. This is how it looks here on earth

  159. from God's point of view.

  160. Of course, we don't see it that way many times.

  161. We often think that we're pretty good.

  162. We do our best to try to minimize our sins.

  163. But according to God's evaluation,

  164. as we just heard,

  165. not a single one of us is righteous

  166. before God in God's sight.

  167. Not a single one of us is good

  168. like He is.

  169. Maybe you remember the time

  170. that a rich man came up to Jesus

  171. and asked Him a question.

  172. Mark chapter 10 verse 17.

    Mark 10:17

  173. He said,

  174. Good teacher,

  175. what must I do to inherit eternal life?

  176. Jesus answered him and said,

  177. Why do you call me good?

  178. No one is good

  179. except God alone.

  180. Jesus Himself,

  181. speaking the words of the Father,

  182. proclaimed this same truth

  183. that there is no one righteous,

  184. not even one.

  185. We are all guilty before God.

  186. As we just heard,

  187. Paul goes on here in Romans

  188. to tell us

  189. how human beings have managed to sin

  190. with almost every part of their bodies.

  191. I won't read it again.

  192. Their throats,

  193. their tongues,

  194. their lips,

  195. their mouths,

  196. their feet,

  197. their eyes.

  198. Do you hear this?

  199. No one,

  200. not a single person

  201. is righteous.

  202. Paul goes on,

  203. verse 19.

  204. He says,

  205. We know that whatever the law says,

  206. it says to those who are under the law,

  207. so that every mouth may be silenced

  208. and the whole world held accountable to God.

  209. In other words,

  210. what was spoken at Mount Sinai

  211. was spoken to the Jews who were there.

  212. But it wasn't just for the Jews who were there.

  213. It was for the whole world

  214. that God said all that He said at Mount Sinai.

  215. It was so that all of us would know and understand

  216. what God's just and righteous standard is.

  217. What true goodness is.

  218. Verse 20.

  219. Therefore,

  220. Paul says,

  221. no one will be declared righteous in God's sight

  222. by the works of the law.

  223. Rather,

  224. through the law,

  225. we become conscious

  226. of sin.

  227. Do you hear this?

  228. No one,

  229. not a single person

  230. will be declared

  231. good or righteous

  232. by keeping commandments,

  233. by observing the law.

  234. Why?

  235. Because none of us is able to

  236. keep it.

  237. We all fall short of that.

  238. We can't.

  239. So Paul says,

  240. rather,

  241. through the law,

  242. we become conscious

  243. of sin.

  244. What does the law do?

  245. One of the purposes of the law

  246. that God gave,

  247. this is the first books of the Bible.

  248. Genesis,

  249. Exodus,

  250. Leviticus,

  251. Numbers,

  252. Deuteronomy.

  253. One of the purposes of the law

  254. is to show us

  255. that we are indeed

  256. sinners.

  257. That we fall short.

  258. that we are guilty

  259. before this holy God

  260. who created the world.

  261. And this is probably

  262. one reason

  263. why we tend not to like

  264. the Old Testament

  265. and prefer

  266. the New Testament

  267. because

  268. it's true.

  269. Parts of the Old Testament

  270. are like that.

  271. They're like a mirror

  272. that God is holding up to us

  273. saying,

  274. see,

  275. this is

  276. what you are.

  277. You are guilty.

  278. You are sinful.

  279. You are deserving

  280. of justice.

  281. Let me encourage you

  282. at this point.

  283. Don't neglect

  284. the Old Testament.

  285. The books of the law,

  286. those scathing words

  287. of the prophets,

  288. we need them.

  289. We need them

  290. to become conscious

  291. of sin.

  292. To become aware

  293. of where we truly

  294. stand before God.

  295. God.

  296. It's only

  297. there,

  298. looking in the mirror

  299. of the law,

  300. the righteous law

  301. of God,

  302. that we see

  303. our true need

  304. for the remedy

  305. that God has provided.

  306. Let's hear about

  307. that remedy now.

  308. I'll go back

  309. and read this.

  310. Therefore,

  311. no one will be

  312. declared righteous

  313. in God's sight

  314. by the works

  315. of the law.

  316. Rather,

  317. through the law,

  318. we become conscious

  319. of our sin.

  320. But now,

  321. says Paul,

  322. apart from the law,

  323. the righteousness

  324. of God

  325. has been revealed

  326. to which the law

  327. and the prophets

  328. testify.

  329. This righteousness

  330. is given

  331. through faith

  332. in Jesus Christ

  333. to all who believe.

  334. There's no difference

  335. between Jew and Gentile

  336. for all have sinned

  337. and all fall short

  338. of the glory of God.

  339. And all are justified

  340. freely by His grace

  341. through the redemption

  342. that came

  343. by Christ Jesus.

  344. These are some

  345. of the most wonderful words

  346. in the whole Bible.

  347. Do you hear what Paul

  348. is saying here?

  349. He's saying,

  350. I've just told you now

  351. the bad news.

  352. That we are all guilty

  353. before God.

  354. Deserving of God's wrath.

  355. No matter how hard you try,

  356. you can never keep

  357. God's law and commandments

  358. well enough

  359. to be righteous

  360. in His sight.

  361. But now,

  362. listen,

  363. God has done something new

  364. through Jesus Christ.

  365. There's good news.

  366. God has revealed

  367. His righteousness.

  368. a way to get

  369. a right standing

  370. with God.

  371. And we don't get it

  372. through keeping the law,

  373. he says.

  374. It's apart from the law.

  375. We don't get it

  376. by trying to obey

  377. all of His commands

  378. better.

  379. No,

  380. this righteousness,

  381. this right standing

  382. with God

  383. is given

  384. by God

  385. to all who believe

  386. through faith

  387. in Jesus Christ,

  388. says Paul.

  389. This is the good news

  390. that I've been longing

  391. to tell all of you

  392. in Rome.

  393. God has sent Jesus

  394. and by believing in Him,

  395. by faith in Him,

  396. you can have

  397. a right standing

  398. with God.

  399. You can be considered

  400. righteous

  401. in His sight.

  402. And it doesn't matter

  403. one bit

  404. whether you're a Jew

  405. or a Gentile,

  406. says Paul.

  407. Either way,

  408. you're a guilty sinner

  409. who falls short

  410. of God's glory

  411. and either way,

  412. you are justified.

  413. You are made

  414. right

  415. in God's sight

  416. by faith

  417. in Jesus Christ

  418. as a gift

  419. of His grace.

  420. These are sweet words.

  421. Do you hear

  422. what Paul is saying?

  423. Do you hear

  424. what God is speaking

  425. through this apostle here?

  426. Even though you,

  427. like everyone else,

  428. are guilty

  429. and deserve

  430. God's punishment,

  431. even though you

  432. are not righteous,

  433. you can be

  434. declared righteous.

  435. And it's the gift

  436. of God

  437. to all who believe

  438. in Jesus,

  439. the Christ.

  440. I love the language

  441. of grace

  442. in Paul's words here.

  443. This is not a right

  444. standing with God

  445. that we get

  446. by doing good,

  447. by keeping commands,

  448. by earning it.

  449. In fact,

  450. all of chapter 4,

  451. which we won't go to today,

  452. is dedicated

  453. to making that

  454. crystal clear.

  455. You can't earn it.

  456. It comes as a free gift,

  457. unearned.

  458. But to make this clear

  459. in this verse

  460. that we're looking at

  461. right here,

  462. Paul gives us

  463. a few different words

  464. that tell us

  465. of the gift,

  466. of the freeness

  467. of this gift.

  468. Notice the language

  469. he uses here

  470. in verse 24.

  471. He says,

  472. all are justified

  473. freely

  474. by his grace.

  475. First,

  476. there's the word

  477. justified.

  478. The word used here

  479. means to pronounce

  480. or to declare

  481. someone righteous.

  482. Not guilty.

  483. It means,

  484. with regard to justice,

  485. to give us

  486. that favorable

  487. verdict that we

  488. long for

  489. in the courts

  490. of God.

  491. Not guilty.

  492. But of course,

  493. as we've just heard,

  494. that's not the verdict

  495. that we deserve.

  496. And so it doesn't

  497. come to us

  498. because we've earned it.

  499. It comes to us

  500. apart from

  501. what we've done

  502. for ourselves.

  503. This points us

  504. in the direction

  505. of gift.

  506. But then Paul

  507. adds to this word.

  508. He says,

  509. we are justified,

  510. we are made

  511. righteous

  512. freely.

  513. This adverb

  514. in the original language

  515. is actually

  516. the noun

  517. for gift.

  518. And then

  519. the ending

  520. is changed

  521. to just kind of

  522. make it into

  523. an adverb.

  524. Quite literally,

  525. it would be

  526. something like,

  527. all are justified

  528. giftly.

  529. But we don't have

  530. that word in English,

  531. so it's translated

  532. freely

  533. as a gift.

  534. No strings attached.

  535. It's something given.

  536. Not because it's been

  537. earned

  538. or deserved

  539. or worked for.

  540. Think about a gift.

  541. It's something

  542. that you just

  543. hand to someone.

  544. You give it to them.

  545. Maybe you see

  546. that they're in need

  547. of something

  548. and you have

  549. that something

  550. and they can't

  551. get that something.

  552. They can't afford it

  553. maybe.

  554. But you have it

  555. and so you give it

  556. to them.

  557. You just hand it

  558. over to them.

  559. Finally,

  560. there's the third

  561. phrase that Paul

  562. uses

  563. to make this clear

  564. that it's free,

  565. that it's a gift.

  566. We are all

  567. justified freely

  568. by His grace.

  569. By His grace.

  570. I love that word.

  571. What is God's grace?

  572. God's grace

  573. is His goodwill.

  574. It's His kindness.

  575. It's His benevolence.

  576. It's that

  577. favorable disposition

  578. that He has

  579. towards us.

  580. The desire

  581. to meet our needs,

  582. to bless us,

  583. to treat us kindly,

  584. to do good

  585. to us.

  586. God's grace

  587. has to do

  588. with His

  589. generous,

  590. giving nature.

  591. In fact,

  592. the word grace

  593. in the language

  594. of the New Testament

  595. is derived

  596. from a word

  597. that just means

  598. gift again

  599. or favor.

  600. So you bring

  601. all of these together

  602. and there's just

  603. no mistaking it here.

  604. Even though we are

  605. all guilty,

  606. even though we all

  607. fall short

  608. of God's glory,

  609. says Paul,

  610. unrighteous,

  611. all of us

  612. can be made

  613. righteous

  614. in God's sight

  615. and we can have

  616. this

  617. as a free gift

  618. from God

  619. because of His

  620. goodness,

  621. His generous,

  622. kind,

  623. loving nature.

  624. No works

  625. required,

  626. no law-keeping

  627. required,

  628. no strings

  629. attached.

  630. And what do we

  631. have to do

  632. to receive

  633. this gift?

  634. Well,

  635. Paul tells us

  636. all throughout

  637. this passage.

  638. This right standing

  639. comes to us

  640. through faith

  641. in Jesus Christ

  642. to all

  643. who believe.

  644. That's it.

  645. Believe.

  646. It's not what

  647. we must do

  648. as in

  649. earning it.

  650. We couldn't

  651. earn it.

  652. Instead,

  653. it's who we

  654. must trust.

  655. It's who we

  656. must believe.

  657. This is an

  658. attitude of the

  659. heart.

  660. And we

  661. find out

  662. that it's

  663. not so much

  664. about what

  665. we can do

  666. to get this.

  667. It's about

  668. what God,

  669. what Jesus

  670. has done

  671. for us

  672. and us

  673. believing that

  674. by which

  675. we are

  676. brought into

  677. this right

  678. standing with

  679. God.

  680. Notice

  681. the emphasis

  682. of Paul.

  683. This

  684. righteousness,

  685. this gift

  686. of God

  687. to be

  688. not guilty

  689. in his

  690. sight.

  691. It comes

  692. through

  693. Jesus

  694. Christ.

  695. Here in

  696. verse 24,

  697. it came,

  698. the redemption

  699. comes by

  700. Jesus Christ,

  701. Christ Jesus.

  702. He says it

  703. again and

  704. again all

  705. through this

  706. gospel.

  707. There is

  708. only one

  709. way to

  710. get a

  711. right standing

  712. with God

  713. and it's

  714. through

  715. Jesus

  716. Christ

  717. and what

  718. he has

  719. done

  720. for us.

  721. let's

  722. talk for

  723. a moment

  724. about what

  725. Jesus

  726. did

  727. to

  728. redeem

  729. us.

  730. This

  731. is all

  732. driving

  733. to this

  734. central

  735. point,

  736. this

  737. central

  738. moment.

  739. How do

  740. we get

  741. a not

  742. guilty

  743. verdict

  744. with

  745. God

  746. through

  747. Jesus

  748. Christ?

  749. Paul

  750. finally

  751. tells us

  752. what it

  753. is that

  754. Jesus

  755. has done

  756. in

  757. verse

  758. 25.

  759. He

  760. says

  761. God

  762. presented

  763. Christ

  764. as a

  765. sacrifice

  766. of

  767. atonement

  768. through

  769. the

  770. shedding

  771. of

  772. his

  773. blood.

  774. We'll

  775. unpack

  776. this a

  777. little

  778. bit

  779. quickly

  780. here.

  781. Through

  782. the

  783. shedding

  784. of

  785. his

  786. blood,

  787. this

  788. right

  789. standing

  790. with

  791. God

  792. that

  793. we

  794. can

  795. have,

  796. it

  797. came

  798. by

  799. the

  800. death

  801. of

  802. Jesus.

  803. This

  804. is

  805. Paul's

  806. way

  807. of

  808. referring

  809. to

  810. the

  811. suffering

  812. and

  813. death

  814. of

  815. Jesus

  816. on

  817. the

  818. cross.

  819. What

  820. happened

  821. when

  822. Jesus

  823. died

  824. on

  825. the

  826. cross?

  827. It

  828. was

  829. much

  830. more

  831. than

  832. just

  833. some

  834. political

  835. rebel

  836. being

  837. executed,

  838. which is

  839. what the

  840. world

  841. saw.

  842. Paul

  843. tells us

  844. what

  845. happened

  846. in that

  847. moment.

  848. A

  849. sacrifice

  850. of

  851. atonement

  852. was

  853. being

  854. made.

  855. This

  856. points us

  857. back to

  858. the Old

  859. Testament

  860. and the

  861. language

  862. of

  863. atonement.

  864. The

  865. sacrifices

  866. that were

  867. offered at

  868. the

  869. tabernacle

  870. and later

  871. at the

  872. temple

  873. to atone

  874. for the

  875. sins

  876. of the

  877. people.

  878. But

  879. notice

  880. here in

  881. verse 25

  882. who

  883. brings

  884. the

  885. sacrifice.

  886. It's

  887. not

  888. us,

  889. the

  890. guilty,

  891. but

  892. God,

  893. the

  894. gracious.

  895. God

  896. presented

  897. Christ

  898. as an

  899. atoning

  900. sacrifice,

  901. as a

  902. wrath

  903. removing

  904. sacrifice

  905. for our

  906. sins.

  907. and the

  908. benefits

  909. of this

  910. we

  911. receive

  912. by faith,

  913. by

  914. believing.

  915. There it

  916. is again.

  917. I'll

  918. finish off

  919. the verse

  920. here.

  921. He did

  922. this to

  923. demonstrate

  924. his

  925. righteousness

  926. because

  927. in his

  928. forbearance

  929. he had

  930. left the

  931. sins

  932. committed

  933. beforehand

  934. unpunished.

  935. He did

  936. it to

  937. demonstrate

  938. his

  939. righteousness

  940. at the

  941. present

  942. time

  943. so as

  944. to be

  945. just

  946. and the

  947. one who

  948. justifies.

  949. those who

  950. have

  951. faith

  952. in

  953. Jesus.

  954. There's

  955. lots

  956. here but

  957. basically

  958. it amounts

  959. to this.

  960. God

  961. is in

  962. the

  963. business

  964. of

  965. leaving

  966. sins

  967. unpunished.

  968. He

  969. has been

  970. doing it

  971. since the

  972. Garden of

  973. Eden,

  974. since the

  975. days of

  976. Abraham,

  977. Isaac,

  978. and Jacob,

  979. through the

  980. days of

  981. Israel.

  982. None

  983. of them

  984. and none

  985. of us

  986. are

  987. righteous,

  988. not even

  989. one.

  990. We've

  991. all sinned.

  992. We all

  993. fall short

  994. of God's

  995. glory.

  996. God

  997. has been

  998. leaving

  999. sins

  1000. unpunished,

  1001. but God's

  1002. justice

  1003. demands that

  1004. all sins

  1005. be punished.

  1006. And so

  1007. Christ came

  1008. to take the

  1009. punishment that

  1010. they deserved

  1011. long ago

  1012. and the

  1013. punishment that

  1014. we deserve

  1015. here today

  1016. so we

  1017. could be

  1018. justified,

  1019. given that

  1020. right standing

  1021. with God

  1022. despite what

  1023. we deserve.

  1024. God's

  1025. death on

  1026. Jesus'

  1027. death on

  1028. the cross

  1029. was all

  1030. about,

  1031. says Paul.

  1032. As Jesus

  1033. hung there,

  1034. he was

  1035. offering a

  1036. wrath-removing

  1037. sacrifice for

  1038. you and

  1039. for me so

  1040. that our

  1041. verdict of

  1042. guilty could

  1043. be changed

  1044. to not

  1045. guilty and

  1046. yet justice

  1047. still be

  1048. done.

  1049. And this is

  1050. what we want

  1051. to celebrate

  1052. today as we

  1053. come again

  1054. to the

  1055. Lord's

  1056. table.

  1057. Jesus'

  1058. body,

  1059. represented by

  1060. the bread,

  1061. was broken.

  1062. He was

  1063. killed.

  1064. He died.

  1065. His blood

  1066. that was

  1067. shed

  1068. represents

  1069. his life

  1070. given

  1071. and poured

  1072. out for

  1073. us.

  1074. The

  1075. greatest of

  1076. all gifts

  1077. was offered

  1078. here at

  1079. the cross

  1080. to all

  1081. who will

  1082. believe,

  1083. whether Jew

  1084. or Gentile,

  1085. a free

  1086. gift,

  1087. no strings

  1088. attached,

  1089. nothing

  1090. needing to

  1091. be done

  1092. to earn

  1093. it,

  1094. to deserve

  1095. it.

  1096. You and

  1097. me can

  1098. have a

  1099. right standing

  1100. with God

  1101. and be

  1102. declared

  1103. righteous

  1104. forever.

  1105. Our verdict

  1106. changed

  1107. and it

  1108. comes

  1109. through

  1110. faith in

  1111. Jesus the

  1112. King

  1113. and his

  1114. suffering

  1115. in our

  1116. place

  1117. and death

  1118. at the

  1119. cross.

  1120. Maybe you're

  1121. here this

  1122. morning and

  1123. you're wondering

  1124. why would

  1125. he do

  1126. that

  1127. for a

  1128. wretched

  1129. sinner like

  1130. me?

  1131. Well,

  1132. Paul's answer

  1133. here is because

  1134. of his grace.

  1135. He is that

  1136. kind of a

  1137. God.

  1138. He is

  1139. kind,

  1140. good,

  1141. gracious,

  1142. there's

  1143. real love

  1144. in the

  1145. heart of

  1146. God

  1147. for you

  1148. and for

  1149. me.

  1150. Do you

  1151. believe it?

  1152. The cross

  1153. proves it.

  1154. We're

  1155. going to

  1156. go to

  1157. worship now.

  1158. We're

  1159. going to

  1160. sing.

  1161. We'll have

  1162. a chance

  1163. through the

  1164. songs to

  1165. reflect on

  1166. this and

  1167. then we'll

  1168. serve and

  1169. partake of

  1170. the table

  1171. and we'll

  1172. sing some

  1173. more after

  1174. that.

  1175. We're

  1176. going to

  1177. partake now

  1178. of the

  1179. Lord's

  1180. table and

  1181. if you

  1182. believe in

  1183. Jesus that

  1184. he is that

  1185. sacrifice of

  1186. atonement for

  1187. your sins,

  1188. then this

  1189. table is

  1190. open to

  1191. you and

  1192. I invite

  1193. you to

  1194. partake,

  1195. to eat of

  1196. the bread and

  1197. drink of the

  1198. cup when it

  1199. comes around.

  1200. I'll invite

  1201. Dave and

  1202. Charles to

  1203. come forward

  1204. and to

  1205. serve the

  1206. elements and

  1207. we'll wait

  1208. until everybody

  1209. who wishes to

  1210. partake has

  1211. been served

  1212. and then we'll

  1213. eat and drink

  1214. together all in

  1215. unison.

  1216. wedding for

  1217. But

  1218. you

  1219. Amen.

  1220. Amen.

  1221. Amen.

  1222. Amen.

  1223. Amen.

  1224. Amen.

  1225. Amen.

  1226. Let's pray.

1227. Father in heaven, we thank you so much for this gift that you have given to us.

1228. Lord Jesus, we thank you for being willing to suffer like you did.

  1229. We don't deserve it.

1230. But we are so grateful.

1231. We look forward to the eternity to heaven that you have purchased for us.

1232. Life forever with you because of what you did for us.

  1233. Thank you.

1234. We eat and drink in remembrance of you.

  1235. Amen.

  1236. Amen.

  1237. Amen.

  1238. Amen.

  1239. Amen.

  1240. Amen.

  1241. do

  1242. do

  1243. do
