  1. All right, well we are continuing on through the Gospel of John.

  2. So if you have your Bible with you, you can open it up to the Gospel of John, chapter 15.

    John 15 chapter mention

  3. It's the night of Jesus' betrayal.

  4. Jesus is now with the eleven disciples.

  5. Judas has left to put the plan into motion.

  6. This is before they go into the Garden of Gethsemane.

  7. And Jesus is continuing to encourage and comfort and teach these eleven men.

  8. And this whole chapter is just Jesus speaking to them.

  9. It's his words to them.

  10. We're picking it up this morning in John, chapter 15, verse 18.

    John 15:18

  11. Jesus says to them,

  12. If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.

  13. If you belong to the world, it would love you as its own.

  14. As it is, you do not belong to the world.

  15. But I have chosen you out of the world.

  16. That is why the world hates you.

  17. Remember what I told you.

  18. A servant is not greater than his master.

  19. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.

  20. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also.

  21. They will treat you this way because of my name.

  22. For they do not know the one who sent me.

  23. Much of what Jesus has to say at this point in the evening is rather sobering.

  24. These first words of verse 18 really set the tone for this section.

  25. If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.

  26. We've been hearing Jesus talk about our relationship with him.

  27. Vine and branches and fruit.

  28. And love and joy.

  29. But now the subject changes and the tone gets serious.

  30. Jesus is beginning to prepare these men for what's coming.

  31. The world will hate you, says Jesus.

  32. There's going to be hatred, animosity, opposition, and yes, even persecution coming your way.

  33. Things are going to get nasty.

  34. But as Jesus tells them this, there's some comfort in his words as well.

  35. And it's not that kind of empty, feel-good assurance.

  36. Don't worry, everything's going to be all right.

  37. Instead, Jesus gives the kind of comfort, I'm going to call them anchoring truths.

  38. Or guiding lights.

  39. Because when things get difficult, when the storms of life hit, we sometimes find ourselves disoriented.

  40. Wondering which way's up, which way's down.

  41. Searching for answers.

  42. Trying to understand what's going on and why.

  43. Why is this happening?

  44. And in those moments, we need something to really anchor onto and get our bearings.

  45. We need a guiding light, a fixed point in the midst of the darkness.

  46. And that's the kind of comfort Jesus offers them here.

  47. The world will hate you, says Jesus.

  48. But there is a reason.

  49. And understanding those reasons will help you through it.

  50. So Jesus gives his disciples at least three reasons why the world will hate them.

  51. Reason number one, he says, the world will hate you because you do not belong to the world anymore.

  52. Verse 19.

  53. If you belong to the world, it would love you as its own.

  54. As it is, you do not belong to the world.

  55. But I have chosen you out of the world.

  56. That is why the world hates you.

  57. The world here generally means the people of the world.

  58. And Jesus makes it clear that each of the disciples themselves were, at one time, part of the world.

  59. Jesus says, I have chosen you out of the world.

  60. Meaning, you used to be part of it.

  61. But now Jesus does an interesting thing.

  62. He seems to kind of draw a line in the sand between them, the disciples, and the world.

  63. He sort of creates two groups here.

  64. He says to the disciples, if you were literally of the world, if you belonged to the world, the world would love you as its own.

  65. But I have now chosen you out of the world.

  66. To put it in our way of saying things, the world will hate you because you are no longer one of them.

  67. And we can talk about that word hate.

  68. Hate in our English language, it's a very strong word.

  69. It's like the strongest form of dislike.

  70. But it can also include everything below it, too.

  71. It can include disdain.

  72. It can include dislike.

  73. It can include people that would insult you.

  74. I mean, all of that's kind of lumped in under there.

  75. The world will hate you, says Jesus, because you are no longer one of them.

  76. And this is quite the statement.

  77. Jesus has come into this world, and there is this separation taking place here.

  78. There are now the followers of Jesus, and there is the world.

  79. And Jesus seems to be suggesting you can be either one or the other.

  80. This kind of hinges on whether or not you accept Jesus and are going to follow him or not.

  81. And probably Jesus uses the world to describe those who are not his followers,

  82. because it's the majority, really, who do not receive Jesus or who are opposed to Jesus.

  83. So it's as if he's saying, you can belong to the world and be one of them,

  84. or you can belong to me and be one of mine.

  85. And you, my disciples, now that you are no longer one of them, one of the world,

  86. you are mine.

  87. For I have chosen you out of the world.

  88. And that is why the world hates you, disdains you, despises you, does not love you.

  89. Jesus lays it plainly before them and before us.

  90. There is a cost to following him.

  91. It will include a change in your allegiance,

  92. a change in sides, a change in who you would call your people.

  93. You, my disciples, are about to realize, if you haven't already,

  94. that you're no longer one of them, says Jesus.

  95. Not like you used to be.

  96. And that's why the world hates you.

  97. Following Jesus requires a change in your very identity,

  98. a change in your camp, your tribe, your people.

  99. And that separation is at the heart of this opposition,

  100. this hatred, this treating you with contempt, says Jesus.

  101. So that's the first reason that Jesus gives.

  102. The world will hate you because you do not belong to it anymore.

  103. The second reason Jesus gives, he says,

  104. the world will hate you because it hates me.

  105. We see this in verse 18.

  106. If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first.

  107. And verse 20.

  108. Remember what I told you, a servant is not greater than his master.

  109. If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also.

  110. They will treat you this way because of my name.

  111. So there is a deeper reason why the world will hate, despise, disdain Jesus' followers.

  112. And it's not just because they're different.

  113. Not just because they're separate and weird and, well, I don't like that about them.

  114. No.

  115. At the root of their contempt is me, says Jesus.

  116. They will have a problem with you because they have a problem with me.

  117. Look at how this story has gone so far.

  118. Many have come to hate Jesus so fiercely up to this point in the story

  119. as he's been going about and doing things and teaching.

  120. In fact, tomorrow, the crowd will be shouting,

  121. Crucify him!

  122. Kill him on a cross!

  123. And so Jesus levels with them.

  124. Peter, James, Nathaniel.

  125. This is to be expected.

  126. If that's how they've been treating me,

  127. they're going to treat you in the same way.

  128. Because you are my followers.

  129. If they hate the master, they will hate his servants as well.

  130. For the servants have pledged themselves to the master's service.

  131. If they hate the leader, they will hate his devoted followers too, says Jesus.

  132. And again, we're seeing this truth come out that there's a cost to following Jesus.

  133. Many people despised him.

  134. And so Jesus says,

  135. That contempt that they have for me,

  136. it's coming your way.

  137. The world will hate you

  138. because it hates me.

  139. The third reason Jesus gives for why the world will hate his disciples

  140. is this.

  141. The world will hate you because it does not know God.

  142. We see this here in verse 21.

  143. They will treat you this way because of my name

  144. for they do not know the one who sent me.

  145. This is an even deeper reason for why people reject and hate Jesus

  146. and by extension his followers.

  147. Jesus says it's because they don't know God.

  148. Now this might sound a little strange to our ears.

  149. We might think, huh?

  150. Which comes first?

  151. Knowing God?

  152. Or accepting Jesus?

  153. Believing in Jesus?

  154. And we can easily get all tied up with this thing that Jesus said.

  155. And I'll admit it to you.

  156. I probably don't have the authoritative final word

  157. on how this works and what this means.

  158. But here's a few thoughts.

  159. First of all, we have to watch that word, know.

  160. What does Jesus mean when he says,

  161. they did not know God?

  162. One of the threads that runs through the Bible is that

  163. to know someone,

  164. often it means more than just to know about them.

  165. A very literal translation of Genesis chapter 4 verse 1.

    Genesis 4:1

  166. I'm looking back at the old King James.

  167. Now Adam knew Eve, his wife,

  168. and she conceived and bore Cain.

  169. So knowing a person, at least in the Bible,

  170. often refers to having a significant relationship with them,

  171. even an intimate relationship with them.

  172. We see this clearly again in John 17.3

  173. where Jesus is praying and he says to the Father,

  174. now this is eternal life,

  175. that they know you,

  176. the only true God.

  177. So I don't think Jesus means to say

  178. that the world hates him

  179. because it's just unaware of who sent him.

  180. This hatred towards Jesus

  181. is not born out of ignorance.

  182. It's not that they don't know that God sent Jesus.

  183. And so, oops,

  184. we made an honest mistake.

  185. Jesus will make this even clearer in a minute

  186. when we get to the next section.

  187. Rather,

  188. Jesus seems to be suggesting

  189. that they do not have

  190. a relationship with God

  191. as they ought to,

  192. as they should,

  193. leading up to this

  194. and Jesus coming and speaking to them.

  195. And that's why they hate his son.

  196. There were some in Israel

  197. who knew God

  198. even before Jesus came.

  199. There was Zachariah

  200. and Elizabeth.

  201. There was Mary and Joseph.

  202. There was Anna

  203. and Simeon.

  204. All these were people

  205. who had real faith in Yahweh,

  206. the God of Israel.

  207. And there were a good number of people

  208. who also heard

  209. the words of John the Baptizer

  210. out in the wilderness.

  211. He was calling the people to repent,

  212. to turn back to God.

  213. And some of them responded

  214. and they did.

  215. They believed.

  216. They were baptized.

  217. And then later,

  218. they went on to follow Jesus

  219. as John pointed them to him.

  220. These were the people

  221. who knew God.

  222. They had a relationship with God

  223. based on faith.

  224. Just like Abraham,

  225. Isaac,

  226. Jacob,

  227. King David.

  228. and so now that

  229. Jesus has come,

  230. these people that knew God,

  231. they recognized him.

  232. They believed him.

  233. They loved him.

  234. After all,

  235. Jesus,

  236. as John has told us

  237. in this gospel,

  238. was God

  239. who had come down

  240. and taken on human flesh

  241. and lived among us.

  242. But the world,

  243. the majority,

  244. many of them,

  245. they weren't all too concerned

  246. about God.

  247. Even before John was baptizing

  248. in the wilderness,

  249. the sense we get

  250. from the scriptures

  251. is that

  252. the Pharisees

  253. and religious leaders,

  254. some of them,

  255. they were wicked hypocrites

  256. all along.

  257. They didn't love God.

  258. They were corrupt

  259. and self-interested.

  260. They were going through

  261. the religious motions

  262. to benefit themselves.

  263. They loved the praise

  264. of other people.

  265. They craved power.

  266. They loved money.

  267. And so when John came preaching,

  268. they laughed at him.

  269. They rejected him.

  270. They made fun of him.

  271. And then when Jesus came on the scene,

  272. they rejected him also.

  273. They already had a certain posture

  274. of the heart towards God.

  275. They did not know God.

  276. They did not have

  277. that relationship with him.

  278. And as we'll see in a moment,

  279. they didn't want to know God.

  280. Through this lens,

  281. I think it makes a little more sense,

  282. doesn't it?

  283. This is why they hated Jesus.

  284. Because Jesus is the embodiment of God.

  285. The same God that they've been ignoring

  286. and snubbing

  287. and pushing off all along.

  288. And now here's Jesus

  289. more and more

  290. exposing the truth

  291. about the kind of people

  292. that they are.

  293. About their wickedness

  294. and corruption.

  295. He's putting the spotlight

  296. on their sins

  297. and they're not repenting.

  298. They're stubborn.

  299. Instead, they want to get rid of Jesus.

  300. They want to kill him.

  301. They hated Jesus.

  302. And Jesus says,

  303. they will hate you also.

  304. They will persecute you also.

  305. For the same reason,

  306. because they do not know God.

  307. So these are three reasons

  308. Jesus gives

  309. to why the world will hate you.

  310. Why the world will persecute you.

  311. They will hate you

  312. because you are not

  313. one of them anymore.

  314. They will hate you

  315. because they hate me.

  316. And they will hate you

  317. because you do not know,

  318. they do not know God.

  319. And as we'll see,

  320. they do not want to know God.

  321. Now we come to the second section here,

  322. verses 22 to 25.

  323. And Jesus now shifts

  324. away from

  325. the world

  326. hating his disciples

  327. to talk now

  328. about his relationship

  329. to the world.

  330. We'll hear a little more

  331. about how the world

  332. has hated Jesus.

  333. And Jesus makes it clear

  334. that God will hold them guilty

  335. for how they have treated him.

  336. Let's read it in verse 22.

  337. If I had not come

  338. and spoken to them,

  339. they would not be guilty of sin.

  340. But now,

  341. they have no excuse

  342. for their sin.

  343. Whoever hates me,

  344. hates my father

  345. as well.

  346. If I had not done

  347. among them

  348. the works

  349. no one else did,

  350. they would not be guilty

  351. of sin.

  352. As it is,

  353. they have seen

  354. and yet,

  355. they have hated

  356. both me

  357. and my father.

  358. But this is to fulfill

  359. what is written

  360. in their law.

  361. They hated me

  362. without reason.

  363. Let's start here

  364. in verse 22.

  365. If I had not come

  366. and spoken to them,

  367. they would not be guilty

  368. of sin.

  369. But now,

  370. they have no excuse

  371. for their sin.

  372. Now,

  373. I know that this

  374. raises some major questions

  375. for some of us.

  376. But,

  377. let's start with

  378. what's clear.

  379. What is clear

  380. that Jesus is saying here?

  381. If I had not come

  382. and spoken to them,

  383. but I have.

  384. I have come.

  385. I have spoken to them.

  386. And they have not listened.

  387. They have rejected.

  388. And so,

  389. now they have

  390. no excuse

  391. for their sin.

  392. They are guilty

  393. for their sin.

  394. That's what's

  395. clear here

  396. that Jesus is saying.

  397. Now,

  398. I know what some of us

  399. are wondering

  400. and thinking.

  401. We're wondering,

  402. is Jesus saying

  403. that we wouldn't be guilty

  404. for our sins

  405. if he'd never come?

  406. And if you

  407. just read it

  408. just like that

  409. all by itself,

  410. I know that

  411. you could come

  412. to that idea.

  413. But I don't think

  414. Jesus means to say

  415. that we would all

  416. get a free pass

  417. to heaven

  418. if Jesus

  419. had never come.

  420. This is where

  421. we have to take care

  422. to listen to

  423. the whole Bible

  424. and what Jesus

  425. has said

  426. all throughout

  427. the story,

  428. all throughout

  429. the Gospels

  430. about human sin

  431. and guilt.

  432. And it's absolutely

  433. clear throughout

  434. all the scriptures

  435. that we all

  436. are guilty

  437. of our sins.

  438. We stand

  439. guilty before God

  440. and we deserve

  441. his punishment,

  442. his just

  443. punishment.

  444. if Jesus

  445. hadn't come,

  446. the message

  447. from everywhere

  448. else in the Bible

  449. is that we would

  450. all have perished.

  451. And so what

  452. does Jesus mean

  453. here when he says

  454. if I had not

  455. come and spoken

  456. to them,

  457. they would not

  458. be guilty

  459. of sin?

  460. Well, I'll give

  461. you the short

  462. answer,

  463. I don't know.

  464. But my best

  465. guess here

  466. is that Jesus

  467. is referring

  468. to a very

  469. specific sin.

  470. Not that they

  471. wouldn't be guilty

  472. of any sins

  473. that they've

  474. committed,

  475. but that they

  476. would not be

  477. guilty of the

  478. very specific

  479. sin of how

  480. they have been

  481. responding to

  482. God since he

  483. has come and

  484. treated him.

  485. A grievous

  486. thing for which

  487. they are left

  488. with absolutely

  489. no excuse

  490. before God.

  491. This is a big

  492. perhaps,

  493. perhaps,

  494. but had

  495. Jesus not

  496. yet come,

  497. there is

  498. perhaps an

  499. objection that

  500. could be

  501. raised,

  502. a measure of

  503. ignorance that

  504. could be

  505. pleaded for

  506. why God should

  507. forgive them

  508. and be

  509. merciful,

  510. a sort of

  511. desperate plea

  512. perhaps that the

  513. judge make

  514. absolutely clear

  515. what we're

  516. convicted of

  517. and give us

  518. one last

  519. opportunity to

  520. repent before

  521. he passes the

  522. final sentence

  523. and hand us

  524. over to

  525. judgment.

  526. perhaps,

  527. that's my

  528. best guess,

  529. but the main

  530. point of

  531. Jesus is not

  532. so much what

  533. would be or

  534. could be,

  535. but what is.

  536. He says,

  537. I have come

  538. and I have

  539. spoken to

  540. them and

  541. they have

  542. rejected me

  543. and are

  544. treating me

  545. this way,

  546. so be sure

  547. they will be

  548. held guilty

  549. before my

  550. father for

  551. their sins.

  552. they will

  553. have no

  554. excuse.

  555. It's as

  556. though Jesus

  557. is saying,

  558. I am that

  559. final,

  560. gracious,

  561. and merciful

  562. opportunity

  563. and they

  564. have spurned

  565. me and

  566. rejected me.

  567. With the

  568. coming of

  569. Jesus,

  570. no one who

  571. has heard

  572. what he has

  573. to say can

  574. plead ignorance.

  575. Jesus has

  576. made it clear

  577. what we must

  578. do to be

  579. restored to

  580. God and

  581. have his

  582. forgiveness

  583. and be in

  584. his kingdom.

  585. And so

  586. Jesus, I

  587. think, is

  588. acknowledging,

  589. yes, the

  590. world will

  591. hate you

  592. and yes, the

  593. world hates

  594. me and God

  595. will hold the

  596. people of the

  597. world guilty

  598. for this.

  599. There is no

  600. pleading ignorance

  601. because I have

  602. left them with

  603. no excuse,

  604. says Jesus.

  605. I have come,

  606. I have spoken

  607. to them and

  608. they have

  609. spurned and

  610. rejected and

  611. hated me.

  612. And then

  613. Jesus makes

  614. this incredible

  615. statement that,

  616. wow, verse

  617. 23, he says,

  618. whoever hates

  619. me hates my

  620. father as

  621. well.

  622. There is no

  623. wiggle room

  624. here.

  625. There is no

  626. option to say,

  627. well, I love

  628. God, I love

  629. the father but

  630. I don't like

  631. Jesus.

  632. I don't want to

  633. have anything to

  634. do with him.

  635. I don't want to

  636. listen to him

  637. or do what he

  638. says.

  639. No, we can't

  640. make that

  641. excuse.

  642. It doesn't

  643. work.

  644. Jesus leaves us

  645. no wiggle room.

  646. And if we even

  647. try it, we

  648. misunderstand who

  649. Jesus is.

  650. He's not just

  651. a man.

  652. Jesus has been

  653. claiming to be

  654. one with the

  655. father.

  656. I and the

  657. father are one,

  658. said Jesus.

  659. I am in

  660. him, he is

  661. in me.

  662. As we

  663. mentioned earlier,

  664. right at the

  665. beginning of the

  666. gospel of John,

  667. he said that

  668. Jesus is the

  669. word who was

  670. God and became

  671. flesh and lived

  672. among us.

  673. And so this

  674. here is the

  675. creator.

  676. This is Yahweh

  677. in human flesh

  678. walking among

  679. us.

  680. And so there's

  681. no option to

  682. love God and

  683. hate Jesus.

  684. it can't be

  685. done.

  686. If you hate

  687. me, says

  688. Jesus, you

  689. hate my

  690. father also

  691. as well.

  692. What is

  693. Jesus doing

  694. here?

  695. He seems to

  696. be stripping

  697. away all of

  698. our excuses.

  699. Now that

  700. he's come, if

  701. we do not

  702. accept him for

  703. who he is and

  704. listen to the

  705. things he has

  706. said, then

  707. there will be

  708. no hope for

  709. us on that

  710. final day.

  711. our verdict

  712. will continue

  713. to be guilty.

  714. Jesus then

  715. goes on here

  716. in verse 24

  717. to strip away

  718. one final

  719. excuse.

  720. He says,

  721. if I had not

  722. done among

  723. them the

  724. works no one

  725. else did,

  726. they would

  727. not be guilty

  728. of sin.

  729. As it is,

  730. they have

  731. seen and

  732. yet they

  733. have hated

  734. both me

  735. and my

  736. father.

  737. father.

  738. But this

  739. is to

  740. fulfill what

  741. is written

  742. in their

  743. law.

  744. They hated

  745. me without

  746. reason.

  747. These are

  748. sobering

  749. words.

  750. We might

  751. wonder

  752. sometimes,

  753. but what

  754. if they

  755. just honestly

  756. misunderstood

  757. and didn't

  758. just ended

  759. up on the

  760. wrong side

  761. of things

  762. and didn't

  763. see that

  764. Jesus was

  765. really the

  766. son of

  767. God?

  768. What if

  769. they just

  770. made a

  771. mistake?

  772. What if

  773. they were

  774. trying to

  775. protect

  776. God's

  777. name from

  778. blasphemy

  779. and they

  780. just ended

  781. up accidentally,

  782. innocently,

  783. on the wrong

  784. side,

  785. condemning

  786. this man,

  787. Jesus?

  788. Well,

  789. Jesus strips

  790. away any

  791. chance for

  792. honest

  793. misunderstanding

  794. with these

  795. words.

  796. If I had

  797. not done

  798. among them

  799. the works

  800. no one

  801. else did,

  802. they would

  803. not be

  804. guilty of

  805. sin.

  806. As it is,

  807. they have

  808. seen and

  809. yet they

  810. have hated

  811. both me

  812. and my

  813. father.

  814. Jesus did

  815. countless

  816. signs and

  817. miracles,

  818. acts of

  819. divine power

  820. that are

  821. impossible for

  822. any mere

  823. man to

  824. do.

  825. And they

  826. are the

  827. confirmation

  828. from God.

  829. They are

  830. the evidence

  831. that Jesus

  832. really is

  833. the son of

  834. God,

  835. the Messiah.

  836. It's not as

  837. though God

  838. has left it

  839. open to

  840. misunderstanding.

  841. The miracles

  842. were so

  843. utterly

  844. undeniable.

  845. We've seen

  846. this as we

  847. went along.

  848. Even

  849. Jesus'

  850. fiercest

  851. opponents

  852. couldn't

  853. deny the

  854. things that

  855. he was

  856. doing.

  857. They didn't

  858. know what

  859. to do with

  860. the people

  861. that were

  862. there healed

  863. right in

  864. front of

  865. their faces.

  866. They

  867. couldn't

  868. deny it.

  869. They

  870. admitted it.

  871. And let's

  872. remember the

  873. kinds of

  874. miracles and

  875. signs Jesus

  876. was doing.

  877. We're talking

  878. acts of

  879. compassion.

  880. Healing the

  881. sick,

  882. the lame,

  883. blind,

  884. the deaf,

  885. people with

  886. diseases,

  887. freeing people

  888. from demon

  889. possession,

  890. feeding the

  891. masses food

  892. when they

  893. were hungry,

  894. all wonderful

  895. things,

  896. all good

  897. things.

  898. And Jesus

  899. says,

  900. the world

  901. has seen

  902. those things

  903. and yet

  904. they have

  905. hated me,

  906. both me

  907. and my

  908. father.

  909. And so

  910. there's no

  911. excuse,

  912. says Jesus.

  913. they will

  914. be held

  915. guilty for

  916. their sins

  917. against me.

  918. And then

  919. he quotes

  920. a psalm

  921. of David.

  922. And the

  923. gist of his

  924. point there

  925. I think is

  926. to say

  927. something like

  928. this.

  929. Just like

  930. there were

  931. wicked people

  932. in King

  933. David's

  934. day who

  935. hated him

  936. without

  937. reason,

  938. unjustifiably

  939. for no

  940. fault of

  941. David's in

  942. the same

  943. way.

  944. That's

  945. what's

  946. happening

  947. now in

  948. an even

  949. greater sense.

  950. in an

  951. ultimate

  952. sense.

  953. I am

  954. God's

  955. anointed

  956. chosen

  957. king

  958. for his

  959. people

  960. and they

  961. are totally

  962. unjustified

  963. in their

  964. treatment

  965. of me.

  966. God

  967. will hold

  968. guilty

  969. all

  970. who

  971. spurn

  972. and hate

  973. and reject

  974. Jesus

  975. and God

  976. will hold

  977. guilty

  978. all who

  979. do the

  980. same

  981. to his

  982. beloved

  983. followers.

  984. Now

  985. this is

  986. not the

  987. end of

  988. the comfort

  989. that Jesus

  990. is bringing

  991. he's going

  992. to say

  993. more in

  994. the sections

  995. ahead to

  996. lift their

  997. spirits and

  998. to encourage

  999. them and to

  1000. fill them with

  1001. joy and

  1002. hope as

  1003. they face

  1004. what's coming.

  1005. But we're

  1006. nearly out of

  1007. time for this

  1008. morning so we're

  1009. going to pick

  1010. this conversation

  1011. up again next

  1012. Sunday.

  1013. But I want to

  1014. take a couple

  1015. minutes here to

  1016. just apply what

  1017. we've heard so

  1018. far.

  1019. Sometimes it

  1020. might be difficult

  1021. to know what

  1022. to do with

  1023. these words of

  1024. Jesus.

  1025. We tend to

  1026. read these

  1027. words as if

  1028. Jesus is

  1029. speaking directly

  1030. to us.

  1031. But I want

  1032. to encourage

  1033. you.

  1034. We do well

  1035. here to

  1036. think first

  1037. of how

  1038. these words

  1039. applied to

  1040. the eleven

  1041. men that

  1042. Jesus is

  1043. with that

  1044. night.

  1045. What are

  1046. they about

  1047. to go

  1048. through here?

  1049. Think about

  1050. it.

  1051. They're about

  1052. to watch

  1053. Jesus be

  1054. ripped away

  1055. from them,

  1056. ridiculed,

  1057. mocked,

  1058. falsely

  1059. accused,

  1060. slandered,

  1061. beaten

  1062. brutally,

  1063. and violently

  1064. put to

  1065. death.

  1066. These are

  1067. going to be

  1068. some of the

  1069. hardest days

  1070. of their

  1071. lives.

  1072. Days in

  1073. which they're

  1074. going to be

  1075. wondering which

  1076. way's up and

  1077. which way's

  1078. down and

  1079. what's just

  1080. happened here.

  1081. And now here

  1082. we are in

  1083. the midst

  1084. of all

  1085. this.

  1086. Jesus,

  1087. most well-known

  1088. disciples,

  1089. most loyal,

  1090. devoted

  1091. followers,

  1092. and they've

  1093. hated him so

  1094. much that they

  1095. killed him.

  1096. Are we next?

  1097. What's going to

  1098. happen to us?

  1099. What do we

  1100. do?

  1101. That's why

  1102. Jesus has

  1103. given these

  1104. words.

  1105. First and

  1106. foremost,

  1107. they're to the

  1108. eleven men

  1109. with him that

  1110. night.

  1111. he's telling

  1112. them in

  1113. advance what

  1114. will happen.

  1115. Yes,

  1116. they will

  1117. hate you.

  1118. And he's

  1119. telling them

  1120. why.

  1121. Because you're

  1122. not one of

  1123. them anymore.

  1124. They will

  1125. hate you

  1126. because you

  1127. are a

  1128. follower of

  1129. me and

  1130. they hate

  1131. me.

  1132. That's the

  1133. underlying

  1134. reason.

  1135. And they

  1136. will hate

  1137. you,

  1138. my followers,

  1139. for they

  1140. do not

  1141. know God.

  1142. But because

  1143. I have

  1144. come and

  1145. spoken to

  1146. them and

  1147. done the

  1148. signs and

  1149. miracles I

  1150. did among

  1151. them,

  1152. they are

  1153. without

  1154. excuse and

  1155. they will

  1156. be held

  1157. guilty for

  1158. the rejection

  1159. and persecution

  1160. of me and

  1161. for their

  1162. hatred and

  1163. persecution of

  1164. you.

  1165. I think we

  1166. need to pause

  1167. and just

  1168. appreciate how

  1169. these words

  1170. would have

  1171. been helpful

  1172. to the

  1173. eleven men

  1174. with Jesus

  1175. that night.

  1176. Yes,

  1177. there is

  1178. a measure

  1179. in which

  1180. these words

  1181. are for

  1182. all of us,

  1183. all followers

  1184. of Jesus,

  1185. you and

  1186. me,

  1187. but probably

  1188. these eleven

  1189. men had it

  1190. far worse

  1191. than most

  1192. followers of

  1193. Christ ever

  1194. did in the

  1195. centuries that

  1196. followed.

  1197. These men

  1198. became the

  1199. pillars of

  1200. the church

  1201. of Jesus

  1202. Christ,

  1203. Paul's words,

  1204. not mine.

  1205. They had

  1206. bigger targets

  1207. on their

  1208. backs than

  1209. most would

  1210. ever have

  1211. because they

  1212. were the

  1213. eyewitnesses

  1214. of Jesus.

  1215. And so

  1216. many of

  1217. them were

  1218. brutally

  1219. persecuted

  1220. and killed

  1221. as well.

  1222. Now it

  1223. is true,

  1224. there have

  1225. been Christians

  1226. all through

  1227. the centuries

  1228. who have

  1229. suffered

  1230. and been

  1231. killed

  1232. because of

  1233. their faith

  1234. in Jesus'

  1235. name.

  1236. And I

  1237. think these

  1238. words are

  1239. for them

  1240. too,

  1241. in a

  1242. special way.

  1243. Those who

  1244. are suffering,

  1245. those who

  1246. have suffered,

  1247. I know

  1248. these words

  1249. are probably

  1250. very precious.

  1251. But for us

  1252. here in this

  1253. room today,

  1254. these truths,

  1255. let's be honest,

  1256. they probably

  1257. hit us a

  1258. little differently.

  1259. Some of us

  1260. might even

  1261. say,

  1262. well I've

  1263. never really

  1264. been hated

  1265. because I'm

  1266. a Christian.

  1267. And if

  1268. that's you,

  1269. praise God.

  1270. Isn't that

  1271. wonderful?

  1272. If we have

  1273. freedom to

  1274. worship Jesus

  1275. and openly

  1276. claim the

  1277. name of

  1278. Christ

  1279. for a

  1280. season

  1281. in a

  1282. certain place

  1283. of the

  1284. world and

  1285. nobody is

  1286. upset with

  1287. us or

  1288. after us,

  1289. that's a

  1290. good thing.

  1291. That's a

  1292. gift of God.

  1293. In fact,

  1294. Paul even

  1295. encouraged us

  1296. to pray and

  1297. ask for that

  1298. in 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 2:1–3

  1299. 2,

  1300. verse 1

  1301. to 3.

  1302. But maybe

  1303. there are

  1304. some of you

  1305. here this

  1306. morning who

  1307. have experienced

  1308. some kind

  1309. of resentment

  1310. or disdain

  1311. or poor

  1312. treatment from

  1313. someone because

  1314. of your faith

  1315. in Jesus.

  1316. Maybe you've

  1317. got the cold

  1318. shoulder at

  1319. work or

  1320. someone has

  1321. made fun of

  1322. your faith or

  1323. mocked you or

  1324. insulted you or

  1325. just been unkind

  1326. to you.

  1327. And if that's

  1328. happened to

  1329. you, then

  1330. yes, I

  1331. believe that

  1332. these words

  1333. are for you.

  1334. They are for

  1335. all of us for

  1336. when those

  1337. times of

  1338. opposition and

  1339. mistreatment

  1340. come because

  1341. of our faith

  1342. in Jesus.

  1343. Jesus wants

  1344. you too to

  1345. be able to

  1346. get your

  1347. bearings in

  1348. the midst of

  1349. that when

  1350. those feelings

  1351. are welling up

  1352. inside of you

  1353. and you're on

  1354. the defensive

  1355. feeling what

  1356. is going on

  1357. here.

  1358. There are

  1359. reasons why

  1360. we come

  1361. under fire,

  1362. why we are

  1363. treated in

  1364. this way.

  1365. Number one,

  1366. if you belong

  1367. to Christ,

  1368. you are not

  1369. one of them

  1370. anymore.

  1371. Number two,

  1372. their bad

  1373. attitude or

  1374. treatment of

  1375. you may

  1376. reflect not

  1377. so much a

  1378. problem with

  1379. you, but a

  1380. problem that

  1381. they have with

  1382. Jesus, the

  1383. one that you

  1384. identify with.

  1385. we might not

  1386. know what's

  1387. going on in

  1388. their thoughts,

  1389. in their

  1390. minds, but

  1391. perhaps every

  1392. time they are

  1393. reminded of

  1394. Jesus, they

  1395. feel convicted

  1396. of the sins

  1397. that they are

  1398. hanging on to

  1399. in their

  1400. lives.

  1401. And then they

  1402. see you, they

  1403. bump into you,

  1404. and you are

  1405. that living,

  1406. breathing reminder

  1407. of where they

  1408. stand before

  1409. God, before

  1410. Christ.

  1411. Christ.

  1412. And number

  1413. three, if they

  1414. treat you poorly

  1415. and disdain you

  1416. for being a

  1417. Christian, we

  1418. have to remember

  1419. it's because they

  1420. don't know God.

  1421. There is a

  1422. spiritual reality

  1423. that runs deeply

  1424. here.

  1425. There's an

  1426. aversion to God

  1427. bound up in the

  1428. human heart

  1429. because of sin.

  1430. And so what

  1431. should we do in

  1432. those relationships

  1433. with those

  1434. people in our

  1435. lives?

  1436. I want to

  1437. encourage you

  1438. this morning to

  1439. have the same

  1440. attitude that

  1441. Jesus had.

  1442. What did he

  1443. pray while they

  1444. were killing him

  1445. on the cross?

  1446. Father, forgive

  1447. them, for they

  1448. don't know what

  1449. they're doing.

  1450. Yes, Jesus

  1451. says that the

  1452. persecutors are

  1453. guilty of their

  1454. sins.

  1455. He has come,

  1456. He has spoken,

  1457. He has done the

  1458. miracles, and

  1459. they have rejected

  1460. Him.

  1461. But God is so

  1462. patient, so

  1463. merciful.

  1464. Yes, they are

  1465. guilty, but even

  1466. at this point in

  1467. the story, the

  1468. persecutors, it's

  1469. not too late for

  1470. them.

  1471. In fact, after

  1472. Jesus is crucified

  1473. and rises from the

  1474. dead, He ascends

  1475. to heaven, the

  1476. Spirit comes down

  1477. at Pentecost, Peter

  1478. preaches his

  1479. sermon in front

  1480. of many of the

  1481. Jews, probably

  1482. some of them who

  1483. witnessed the

  1484. crucifixion of

  1485. Jesus.

  1486. He says, let all

  1487. Israel be assured

  1488. of this.

  1489. God has made this

  1490. Jesus whom you

  1491. crucified, both

  1492. Lord and Messiah.

  1493. And when the

  1494. people heard this,

  1495. they were cut to

  1496. the heart.

  1497. Many repented

  1498. after and

  1499. believed.

  1500. They were forgiven

  1501. and they were added

  1502. to the number of

  1503. Jesus' followers.

  1504. Paul said this to

  1505. Timothy, 2 Timothy

  1506. 2.25, he said,

  1507. opponents must be

  1508. gently instructed in

  1509. the hope that God

  1510. will grant them

  1511. repentance, leading

  1512. them to a knowledge

  1513. of the truth.

  1514. Jesus said it this

1515. way, but I tell you,

  1516. love your enemies

  1517. and pray for those

  1518. who persecute you.

  1519. And then you

  1520. will be sons,

  1521. children of your

  1522. Father in heaven

  1523. who is gracious

  1524. and kind and

  1525. loving even to

  1526. those who don't

  1527. deserve it, both the

  1528. righteous and the

  1529. unrighteous.

1530. There is at times a

  1531. cost to following

  1532. Jesus, especially

  1533. when it comes to

  1534. our relationships

  1535. with other people

  1536. in the world.

  1537. But rest assured,

  1538. no matter how

  1539. badly we are

  1540. treated, we

  1541. belong to

  1542. Christ Jesus,

  1543. the King.

  1544. And there is

  1545. nothing more

  1546. valuable than

  1547. that in this

  1548. world.

  1549. Let's pray.

  1550. Father in heaven,

  1551. we thank you for

  1552. your word.

  1553. As we hear

  1554. these things and

  1555. reflect on your

  1556. words, we

  1557. especially turn our

  1558. hearts' attention to

  1559. those who are

  1560. suffering intensely

  1561. in our world

  1562. today, in other

  1563. places in the

  1564. world, countries

  1565. that are very

  1566. difficult to be a

  1567. Christian.

  1568. And we pray and

  1569. ask that you

  1570. would be gracious

  1571. to them, that you

  1572. would strengthen

  1573. them, that you

  1574. would encourage

  1575. them in the face

  1576. of the opposition

  1577. that they are

  1578. going through.

  1579. We ask that you

  1580. would help them

  1581. to hold fast to

  1582. the hope that you

  1583. have given, the

  1584. promises that

  1585. you've made, and

  1586. that they would

  1587. even find that

  1588. power inside of

  1589. them to love.

  1590. And to keep

  1591. treating those who

  1592. are doing these

  1593. things with

  1594. kindness.

  1595. forgiveness.

  1596. Lord, for us in

  1597. our relationships,

  1598. help us, help us

1599. not to give up on

  1600. those who seem

  1601. cold or who have

  1602. said unkind things

1603. to us, but give us

  1604. a fresh strength and

  1605. love for each of

  1606. those people in our

  1607. lives.

  1608. May they know that

  1609. we are Christians

1610. and that you are a

  1611. God who loves them

  1612. through us.

  1613. We ask this in

  1614. Jesus' name, for

  1615. his glory.

  1616. Amen.
