  1. All right, well we are continuing in John this morning, so if you have your Bible with

  2. you, you can open it up to John chapter 16.

    John 16 chapter mention

  3. In case you haven't been here over the past little while, it's the night before Jesus'

  4. death, and Jesus has been taking some time to encourage and comfort and instruct his

  5. disciples to prepare them for what's coming. Jesus has just been warning them about how

  6. things are going to get very difficult for them. He's told them that the world will hate

  7. them, that they will be persecuted. But even though Jesus is about to leave them, they will

  8. not be alone. Jesus has promised to send the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth, and the Spirit,

  9. he says, will testify to the world about Jesus through the disciples. So let's pick up this

  10. conversation that Jesus was having with them that night, starting in verse 6. This is Jesus

  11. talking to them. He said, rather, you are filled with grief because I have said these things.

  12. But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away,

  13. the advocate will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will prove

  14. the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment. About sin, because

  15. people do not believe in me. About righteousness, because I am going to the Father where you can

  16. see me no longer. And about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

  17. I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth,

  18. comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own. He will speak only what

  19. he hears, but he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me, because it is from me that he

  20. will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I

  21. said, the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you. These words of Jesus are all about

  22. the Spirit, as Jesus calls him, the Spirit of truth. And Jesus tells his disciples here three things

  23. that the Spirit will do when he comes. The Spirit of truth will convict the world, that's verses 8 to 11.

  24. He will guide them, that's the apostles, into all the truth, verses 12 and 13. And he will glorify me,

  25. says Jesus, verses 14 to 15. So let's look at each of these briefly this morning. Starting with the first

  26. one, Jesus says that the Spirit of truth will convict the world. When he comes, he will prove the world to

  27. be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment. About sin, because people do not believe in me.

  28. about righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer. And about

  29. judgment, because the Prince of this world now stands condemned. Now these are some tricky verses

  30. here. You may notice in your own Bible some differences to the translation that's on the

  31. screen. Most translations say he will convict the world. A couple say he will prove the world wrong

  32. about. And Jesus says there are three things that the Spirit will convict the world about.

  33. Sin, righteousness, and judgment. Now this is where it gets tricky. In English, when we use that word

  34. convict, like being convicted of something, usually what comes after is a negative word,

  35. like fault, convicted of sin, convicted of a crime, convicted of perjury, convicted of murder,

  36. you get the idea. But it seems that the way Jesus uses this word, in his language, it's a little more

  37. flexible. It seems to carry this idea of uncovering, exposing, bringing to light. And it can even be used

  38. about positive things, like righteousness, or about an outcome, or a verdict, like judgment.

  39. Being convicted of sin makes good sense to us. But these other ideas may sound strange to our ears.

  40. So I want to start by acknowledging that there are at least a dozen different ideas about what Jesus

  41. meant when he said these words. I read one very good commentator who listed off five different views

  42. on just these two verses, three verses. And he didn't like any of those five, so he offered his own sixth

  43. idea. So these have been talked about a lot. The challenge here is that Jesus has a kind of logic

  44. in these words that is maybe not as clear or apparent to us today, what he's talking about.

  45. So what do we do with this? Well, I want to start just by pointing out what is clear from these verses,

  46. and then offer a best guess on some of the stuff that's not so clear. And let's start with the clear.

  47. It's pretty obvious, I think, what it means to convict the world about sin. Most of you have probably

  48. heard that language before. Jesus says that the Spirit will do that. He will expose. He will bring

  49. to light the sin of the world. He will help the world see its guiltiness before God. So that's very

  50. clear. Now what else is clear here? If we look carefully at these three clauses that because, because,

  51. because, there are a few more things that are clear. Jesus says, as a statement in the first clause there,

  52. people, that is the people of the world, do not believe in him. And it's kind of framed as a

  53. problem. So that's, that much is clear. The world does not believe in Jesus, and this is a problem.

  54. Another thing that's clear, Jesus says again, that he is going to the Father. He is about to leave the

  55. disciples. They won't see him anymore. And this is clear. Jesus has said this a few times already

  56. in this same evening to the disciples. Finally, in the third clause there, Jesus says that the prince

  57. or ruler of this world now stands condemned. And pretty much everybody agrees that this is a

  58. reference to Satan, to the devil, and how his fate is already sealed. He is guilty. He is liable to

  59. judgment, though we know from other passages that his punishment hasn't been executed on him yet.

  60. But the verdict is sealed. So that's what's clear here. The spirit, when he comes, he will convict the

  61. world of sin. The world does not believe in Jesus, and Jesus is going to the Father, and the ruler of

  62. this world's judgment is sure. So now we get to the less clear part here. And again, these things have

  63. been variously interpreted, so what I'm about to say, I want you to know, is my opinion and not Scripture.

  64. What does it mean that the Spirit will convict the world about righteousness? I don't think this is a

  65. reference to the righteousness of Jesus. I think it's a reference to the world's righteousness. Just like he

  66. will convict the world about its sin, he will convict the world about its righteousness. Namely, the lack of

  67. righteousness. The world thinks it has righteousness. It's consistently characterized by that ominous

  68. statement at the end of the book of Judges. Everyone does what is right in their own eyes. But the truth,

  69. I think, that the Spirit has come to expose is that we are not righteous. We are not as good as we think

  70. we are. In the words of Isaiah, the prophet, all our righteousness is as filthy rags. When it comes to

  71. righteousness, we are deficient. We are lacking it. So the Spirit will convict the world concerning sin

  72. and concerning righteousness, our lack of it, and concerning judgment. What does it mean that the

  73. Spirit will convict the world concerning judgment? I think it means very simply that he will expose

  74. the reality that we are deserving of judgment, just like the devil is deserving of judgment.

  75. So that's my take on these less clear parts of what Jesus said. And there is a sort of logic in here

  76. that I haven't really dug into too much. Jesus says that the Spirit will convict the world concerning sin.

  77. Why? Because they do not believe in him. We notice that Jesus doesn't say why the world doesn't believe

  78. in him. Is this people who have already heard the message of Jesus and are rejecting it? Or is this people

  79. who have never heard about Jesus? Jesus doesn't say? And so we kind of have to guess at the reason.

  80. Perhaps the reason the Spirit convicts them of sin is because they are not believers in Jesus

  81. as they should be. And so the Spirit presses on them. He exposes our guilt. He helps us to see

  82. our need for Jesus, the Savior, for forgiveness. Jesus also says that the Spirit will convict the world

  83. concerning righteousness because I am going to the Father, he says, and you will see me no more.

  84. This is kind of an unexpected reason. The first reason had to do with the world and them not believing.

  85. But this second reason has to do with Jesus and him not being here on earth anymore.

  86. If I'm reading it right, Jesus has up until now been doing that convicting of sin and righteousness,

  87. the lack of it, and judgment. Think back over what Jesus has been saying to the people.

  88. He's been exposing their guilt. He's been putting the light on the sin,

  89. not just of the religious leaders, but also of the people and calling them to repent.

  90. And so I think that Jesus is saying that there is a need for that convicting work to continue.

  91. Jesus, the light that exposes, is about to leave the world. And so the Spirit will come

  92. and continue that work that Jesus has been doing, that work of convicting. So that's my take on this passage.

  93. Jesus is telling the disciples that the Spirit of truth, when he comes, he will convict,

  94. he will expose, he will shine the light on the reality that we are all guilty before God,

  95. that we lack righteousness, and that we are deserving of judgment.

  96. And I believe that this convicting is something that the Spirit of God continues to do today in our world.

  97. While Jesus was here, he did that important work of the Father.

  98. And while Jesus is away, the Spirit continues it.

  99. And if you read carefully the New Testament letters and how the churches got started,

  100. you can see there in a few places that the credit is given to God's Spirit

  101. when someone comes to their senses and becomes aware of their sin and their need for Jesus.

  102. The Spirit is the one that does that work in us, bringing the words of God to bear on our hearts.

  103. So I want to ask you, have you felt the convicting of the Holy Spirit in your own life?

  104. About sin in your life?

  105. About righteousness?

  106. Your lack of it?

  107. Your lack of it?

  108. Your need for Christ?

  109. About judgment that's coming?

  110. If you have not yet surrendered your life to Christ,

  111. I want to urge you today to do it.

  112. If you hear the voice of God speaking to you today,

  113. don't harden your heart.

  114. Surrender it to his love, to his call.

  115. We come now to the next thing the Spirit will do according to Jesus.

  116. Let's read it again in verses 12 and 13.

  117. Jesus says,

  118. I have much more to say to you,

  119. more than you can now bear.

  120. But when the Spirit of truth comes,

  121. He will guide you into all the truth.

  122. He will not speak on His own.

  123. He will speak only what He hears.

  124. And He will tell you what is yet to come.

  125. Now, the temptation here is to go straight to application.

  126. To just read these words as if they are directed straight at us today.

  127. But before we get there,

  128. we need to stop and consider how these words were for the disciples.

  129. These 11 men there with Jesus that night.

  130. Jesus says,

  131. I have much more to say to you,

  132. more than you can now bear.

  133. Think about how the disciples are feeling right now.

  134. This is the night before Jesus is arrested.

  135. Or the night of Jesus' arrest.

  136. The night before Jesus is crucified.

  137. They've been feeling quite troubled.

  138. John chapter 14 verse 1.

    John 14:1

  139. Their hearts are filled with grief.

  140. As we just heard back in 16 verse 6.

  141. These emotions, you imagine, are swirling inside of them.

  142. And in the midst of all this,

  143. they've been just drinking in this teaching

  144. and these words of Jesus,

  145. like drinking from a fire hose.

  146. Jesus has been saying all these things to them.

  147. I mean, there's three chapters here.

  148. So imagine how they're feeling.

  149. Jesus says,

  150. I have even more to tell you.

  151. More than you can even bear to hear in this moment.

  152. But don't worry.

  153. When the Spirit comes,

  154. He will guide you

  155. into all truth.

  156. He will speak what He hears

  157. and He will tell you.

  158. What is yet to come.

  159. So one of the things that the Spirit will do

  160. when He comes

  161. is He will tell the apostles

  162. all the things that they could not bear to hear

  163. before Jesus left.

  164. That's how the disciples will get,

  165. will receive

  166. all the things Jesus still needs to tell them.

  167. Jesus will speak those things to them

  168. through the Holy Spirit.

  169. And the Spirit will be their guide

  170. just as Jesus has been their guide.

  171. I want to point your attention

  172. to one more little detail in these verses.

  173. Notice what Jesus says there at the end.

  174. He says,

  175. The Spirit will tell you

  176. what is yet to come.

  177. Do you hear that?

  178. This is why we need to be careful

  179. not to just jump straight

  180. into applying all of this

  181. directly to ourselves

  182. because there's something unique

  183. and special going on here.

  184. The apostles are going to receive

  185. revelation from Jesus

  186. through the Holy Spirit

  187. about what is yet to come.

  188. So this is the second thing

  189. that the Spirit will do

  190. is guide the apostles

  191. into all the truth

  192. by speaking to them

  193. the things Jesus

  194. still has to say to them

  195. and by speaking to them

  196. of things that are coming.

  197. Maybe the word prophecy

  198. is rolling around in your mind

  199. as you hear this.

  200. And then Jesus does

  201. some fascinating thing here.

  202. He elaborates on how this all works

  203. a little bit.

  204. Look at what he says

  205. here in verse 13.

  206. He says,

  207. The Spirit will not speak

  208. on his own.

  209. He will speak only

  210. what he hears

  211. and he will tell you

  212. what is yet to come.

  213. Isn't that mysterious?

  214. Maybe you remember

  215. back to some of those

  216. earlier messages

  217. where Jesus was saying

  218. to the people,

  219. I do not speak on my own

  220. or of myself.

  221. I only speak

  222. what the Father

  223. tells me to,

  224. what I hear from him.

  225. Well, this is Jesus

  226. using the same language here

  227. about the Spirit.

  228. The Spirit, Jesus says,

  229. is going to listen

  230. and what the Spirit hears,

  231. he is going to tell

  232. or say

  233. to the disciples,

  234. the apostles.

  235. The Spirit is not

  236. the source of the words

  237. that he will speak.

  238. He is merely

  239. relaying them.

  240. We will come back

  241. to that in a moment.

  242. But let's go on now

  243. to the third thing

  244. Jesus says

  245. that the Spirit will do.

  246. Verses 14 and 15.

  247. Jesus says,

  248. He, the Spirit of truth,

  249. will glorify me

  250. because it is from me

  251. that he will receive

  252. what he will make known

  253. to you.

  254. All that belongs

  255. to the Father

  256. is mine.

  257. That is why I said

  258. the Spirit will receive

  259. from me

  260. what he will make known

  261. to you.

  262. So the third thing

  263. that Jesus says

  264. the Spirit will do,

  265. he will glorify me,

  266. says Jesus.

  267. I'll pull out some synonyms

  268. there to glorify

  269. because that's not a word

  270. we use all the time.

  271. He will magnify,

  272. he will exalt,

  273. he will draw the attention

  274. to my glory,

  275. says Jesus.

  276. Wow.

  277. Those are pretty

  278. significant words

  279. for anyone who has

  280. a hard time believing

  281. that Jesus ever claimed

  282. to be divine.

  283. Consider this.

  284. He claimed that

  285. the Spirit of God

  286. would bring glory

  287. to him.

  288. That's something

  289. God would never do

  290. if Jesus were not one

  291. with God.

  292. Truly divine,

  293. truly worthy

  294. of glory.

  295. So the Spirit

  296. will glorify

  297. Jesus,

  298. but then Jesus

  299. gives us this

  300. very mysterious

  301. explanation

  302. as to how,

  303. in what way

  304. will he do this.

  305. Verse 14,

  306. he will glorify me

  307. because it is from

  308. me

  309. that he will receive

  310. what he will make known

  311. to you.

  312. So Jesus

  313. will be shown

  314. as glorious

  315. by how the very

  316. Spirit of God

  317. will take

  318. Jesus' messages

  319. and speak them

  320. to the disciples

  321. on Jesus' behalf.

  322. I'll say it this way,

  323. there will be a man

  324. in heaven

  325. who tells

  326. the Spirit

  327. of God

  328. what to say

  329. and the Spirit

  330. of God

  331. will listen

  332. and will not

  333. add to

  334. or take away

  335. from any

  336. of his words

  337. but will serve

  338. this man

  339. by relaying

  340. his words

  341. to the apostles.

  342. How can this be?

  343. Perhaps

  344. the disciples

  345. were wondering

  346. that night,

  347. how can you say

  348. things like Jesus?

  349. How can you say

  350. things like this?

  351. You're going away

  352. and God's

  353. Holy Spirit,

  354. you're going

  355. to tell him

  356. what to say

  357. to us?

  358. That sounds

  359. a little wild

  360. to be coming

  361. from this man

  362. sitting right there

  363. with you

  364. or standing

  365. there with you.

  366. I imagine

  367. that something

  368. like this

  369. may have been

  370. rising in the

  371. minds of the

  372. disciples

  373. because Jesus

  374. seems to answer

  375. this question.

  376. Verse 15,

  377. Jesus reminds

  378. them,

  379. all that

  380. belongs to

  381. the Father

  382. is mine.

  383. That is why

  384. I said

  385. that the Spirit

  386. will receive

  387. from me

  388. what he will

  389. make known

  390. to you.

  391. Now I know

  392. that sounds

  393. weird to us,

  394. doesn't it?

  395. Yet here again,

  396. Jesus just states

  397. it so clearly.

  398. All that

  399. belongs to

  400. the Father,

  401. he says,

  402. is mine.

  403. As Jesus

  404. said earlier,

  405. I and the

  406. Father are

  407. one.

  408. There is this

  409. unity of the

  410. Son with

  411. the Father.

  412. There is a

  413. sharing together

  414. in the divine

  415. nature that is

  416. so full,

  417. so true,

  418. that Jesus

  419. can say,

  420. all that

  421. belongs to

  422. the Father

  423. is mine.

  424. Just as the

  425. Father sees

  426. fit to

  427. send his

  428. Spirit forth

  429. with messages

  430. for men,

  431. so I will

  432. send forth

  433. his Spirit

  434. with messages

  435. for you,

  436. says Jesus,

  437. because his

  438. Spirit,

  439. implied,

  440. is my

  441. Spirit.

  442. His authority

  443. is my

  444. authority.

  445. His words

  446. are my

  447. words.

  448. Let that

  449. sink in

  450. for a moment.

  451. man.

  452. Jesus

  453. speaks like

  454. no other

  455. man can,

  456. because he

  457. is not

  458. just a

  459. man.

  460. He is

  461. the divine

  462. Son of

  463. God,

  464. truly God,

  465. truly man,

  466. at the same

  467. time.

  468. It may seem

  469. for a moment

  470. that Jesus

  471. lacks glory.

  472. Here he is

  473. walking around

  474. in human

  475. flesh with

  476. us on

  477. the earth,

  478. especially in

  479. these hours

  480. ahead,

  481. as he is

  482. arrested

  483. and killed.

  484. But the

  485. word who

  486. became flesh,

  487. it will be

  488. seen that

  489. he is

  490. glorious

  491. at the

  492. proper time.

  493. He will

  494. be exalted

  495. and part

  496. of God's

  497. plan to

  498. exalt him,

  499. to lift

  500. him up,

  501. is to have

  502. God's own

  503. Spirit serve

  504. the Son

  505. and bring

  506. his messages,

  507. his words,

  508. to the

  509. apostles and

  510. through them

  511. to the

  512. world.

  513. And so this

  514. is the third

  515. thing the

  516. Spirit will

  517. do.

  518. He will

  519. glorify

  520. Jesus by

  521. relaying the

  522. words of

  523. Jesus to

  524. the apostles.

  525. So let me

  526. just quickly

  527. recap here and

  528. then we're

  529. going to talk

  530. about how

  531. this all

  532. applies to

  533. us today.

  534. Jesus tells

  535. his disciples

  536. that when

  537. the Spirit

  538. of truth

  539. comes he

  540. will do

  541. three things.

  542. Number one,

  543. he will

  544. convict the

  545. world.

  546. Number two,

  547. he will

  548. guide them,

  549. that's the

  550. apostles,

  551. into all

  552. the truth.

  553. And number

  554. three,

  555. he will

  556. glorify me,

  557. says Jesus.

  558. We've already

  559. talked about

  560. the first

  561. way that

  562. this applies

  563. to us.

  564. The Spirit

  565. of truth

  566. continues to

  567. convict the

  568. world about

  569. sin and

  570. righteousness and

  571. judgment in

  572. the absence

  573. of Jesus.

  574. He's still

  575. doing that

  576. convicting work

  577. today.

  578. Some of you

  579. felt that

  580. when you

  581. first surrendered

  582. your life to

  583. Christ.

  584. And so

  585. this should

  586. affect us

  587. in at least

  588. three ways.

  589. First,

  590. it should

  591. bring an

  592. awareness to

  593. us of why

  594. we often

  595. feel like

  596. we do.

  597. about sin.

  598. God is

  599. gracious and

  600. merciful.

  601. He works

  602. so that we

  603. can feel

  604. the ugliness,

  605. the dirtiness,

  606. the vileness

  607. of our own

  608. sin in

  609. his sight.

  610. Not to

  611. beat us

  612. down, not

  613. just to make

  614. us feel more

  615. and more

  616. guilty for

  617. its own

  618. sake, but

  619. so that we

  620. might come

  621. to our

  622. senses and

  623. turn away

  624. from the

  625. madness of

  626. sin.

  627. And seek

  628. the remedy,

  629. the cure,

  630. which is

  631. found in

  632. Jesus and

  633. be forgiven.

  634. And so

  635. again, if

  636. you hear the

  637. voice of

  638. God speaking

  639. to you

  640. through his

  641. word, by

  642. his spirit,

  643. let me

  644. encourage you

  645. today.

  646. Humble

  647. yourself.

  648. Submit

  649. yourself to

  650. his voice

  651. and obey

  652. and

  653. respond.

  654. Second, the

  655. spirit's

  656. convicting

  657. work should

  658. change the

  659. way that we

  660. think about

  661. people.

  662. It's not

  663. just our

  664. own stubbornness

  665. at fault

  666. when people

  667. do not

  668. respond to

  669. the gospel.

  670. There is

  671. also a

  672. blindness.

  673. There is

  674. also a

  675. sense in

  676. which we

  677. are lost

  678. in the

  679. darkness.

  680. we've

  681. lost

  682. sensitivity

  683. to our

  684. own

  685. sinfulness.

  686. And the

  687. good news

  688. is this,

  689. the spirit

  690. has picked

  691. up where

  692. Jesus left

  693. off and

  694. he is at

  695. work bringing

  696. us back to

  697. a realization

  698. of the

  699. truth.

  700. Yes, that

  701. we have

  702. sinned.

  703. Yes, that

  704. we lack

  705. that right

  706. standing with

  707. God.

  708. And yes, that

  709. we are deserving

  710. of judgment.

  711. And here is

  712. the way that

  713. I want to

  714. apply this

  715. to us

  716. today.

  717. Sometimes it

  718. feels as though

  719. we simply

  720. can't get

  721. through to

  722. someone we

  723. love.

  724. We've talked

  725. to them about

  726. Jesus and

  727. yet for some

  728. reason it

  729. just seems

  730. like they

  731. just can't

  732. see it.

  733. They just

  734. won't embrace

  735. him from

  736. the heart.

  737. The good

  738. news is this,

  739. while we

  740. can't change

  741. people's

  742. hearts,

  743. God,

  744. through the

  745. power of

  746. his spirit,

  747. can.

  748. We need

  749. to keep

  750. this in

  751. mind.

  752. We are

  753. not called

  754. to share

  755. the message

  756. of Christ

  757. alone.

  758. God's

  759. spirit goes

  760. with his

  761. word.

  762. And truthfully,

  763. his spirit does

  764. all the heavy

  765. lifting in

  766. people's hearts.

  767. love.

  768. And so I

  769. want to

  770. encourage you

  771. just to

  772. rest in

  773. the fact

  774. that God

  775. can convict

  776. of sin

  777. for those

  778. that you

  779. love who

  780. are lost.

  781. And when

  782. we share

  783. Christ with

  784. them,

  785. do so

  786. trusting that

  787. God's spirit

  788. will do the

  789. work of

  790. convicting.

  791. it may not

  792. be right

  793. now,

  794. this instant.

  795. Maybe it'll

  796. be three

  797. hours later.

  798. Maybe it'll

  799. be three

  800. days.

  801. Maybe it'll

  802. be three

  803. months.

  804. But trust

  805. that God

  806. is doing

  807. what Jesus

  808. said the

  809. spirit will

  810. do.

  811. Third,

  812. the spirit's

  813. convicting work

  814. should change

  815. the way that

  816. we pray.

  817. how do

  818. you pray

  819. when you

  820. pray for

  821. God to

  822. help people?

  823. Do you

  824. say, as

  825. many of us

  826. fall into

  827. the rhythm

  828. of,

  829. Father,

  830. please bless

  831. and be

  832. with and

  833. help so

  834. and so.

  835. And please

  836. bless and be

  837. with and help

  838. this person.

  839. And please

  840. bless and be

  841. with and help

  842. this person.

  843. Those prayers

  844. are good.

  845. Please don't

  846. stop praying

  847. them.

  848. God knows

  849. exactly what

  850. you mean in

  851. your heart

  852. when you say

  853. those words.

  854. But because

  855. we know

  856. what the

  857. spirit does,

  858. that he

  859. convicts

  860. people of

  861. sin,

  862. we can

  863. pray even

  864. more

  865. specifically

  866. than that.

  867. I want to

  868. draw your

  869. attention to

  870. how Paul

  871. prayed in

  872. Ephesians

    Ephesians 1:16

  873. chapter 1

  874. verse 16

  875. and 18.

  876. And I

  877. forgot to

  878. put this

  879. on the

  880. screen so

  881. I'll just

  882. read it to

  883. you.

  884. Paul

  885. said this

  886. to the

  887. Ephesians.

  888. He said,

  889. I have

  890. not stopped

  891. giving

  892. thanks for

  893. you,

  894. remembering

  895. you in

  896. my prayers.

  897. I keep

  898. asking that

  899. the God

  900. of our

  901. Lord Jesus

  902. Christ,

  903. the glorious

  904. Father,

  905. may give

  906. you the

  907. spirit of

  908. wisdom and

  909. revelation so

  910. that you may

  911. know him

  912. better.

  913. I pray that

  914. the eyes of

  915. your heart

  916. may be

  917. enlightened

  918. in order

  919. that you

  920. may know

  921. the hope

  922. to which

  923. he has

  924. called you,

  925. in order

  926. that you

  927. may know

  928. the riches

  929. of his

  930. glorious

  931. inheritance

  932. in his

  933. people,

  934. his holy

  935. people,

  936. and that

  937. you may

  938. know

  939. his

  940. incomparably

  941. great

  942. power

  943. for us

  944. who believe.

  945. Paul

  946. prayed

  947. that God

  948. would reveal

  949. specific

  950. things

  951. to the

  952. Ephesians

  953. by his

  954. Holy Spirit.

  955. God

  956. and we

  957. can pray

  958. the same

  959. way

  960. with

  961. confidence

  962. that yes,

  963. God does

  964. do that

  965. work

  966. of speaking

  967. truth,

  968. of changing

  969. minds

  970. and hearts

  971. and bringing

  972. conviction

  973. where it's

  974. needed.

  975. So pray

  976. for that

  977. for people

  978. whom you

  979. love,

  980. that they

  981. might come

  982. to their

  983. senses,

  984. hear the

  985. truth that

  986. they need

  987. for the

  988. specific

  989. situations

  990. in their

  991. lives.

  992. So because

  993. the Spirit

  994. of truth

  995. convicts

  996. the world

  997. about things,

  998. we should

  999. respond,

  1000. oh,

  1001. yes,

  1002. I got

  1003. that on

  1004. the screen,

  1005. we should

  1006. respond to

  1007. the Spirit's

  1008. convicting

  1009. of our own

  1010. sin,

  1011. we should

  1012. trust the

  1013. Spirit to

  1014. convict as

  1015. we share

  1016. Christ with

  1017. others,

  1018. and we

  1019. should pray

  1020. for God's

  1021. Spirit to

  1022. do this

  1023. work in

  1024. people's

  1025. lives.

  1026. Finally,

  1027. let's come

  1028. now to

  1029. this second

  1030. main thing

  1031. that the

  1032. Spirit does

  1033. according to

  1034. Jesus.

  1035. Jesus said

  1036. He will

  1037. guide them,

  1038. the apostles,

  1039. He was

  1040. speaking to,

  1041. into all

  1042. truth.

  1043. And I'm

  1044. going to

  1045. give two

  1046. applications

  1047. here.

  1048. The first

  1049. and by far

  1050. the most

  1051. important

  1052. application

  1053. is this,

  1054. because God's

  1055. Spirit has

  1056. spoken the

  1057. very words

  1058. of Jesus

  1059. to these

  1060. men,

  1061. the apostles,

  1062. and revealed

  1063. certain things

  1064. to them.

  1065. We should

  1066. listen to

  1067. the apostles

  1068. of Jesus

  1069. and obey

  1070. their teaching

  1071. as if the

  1072. things they

  1073. said are

  1074. the very

  1075. words of

  1076. Jesus

  1077. himself.

  1078. That's what's

  1079. going on

  1080. here.

  1081. They are

  1082. functioning as

  1083. spokespersons

  1084. of Christ.

  1085. There's a

  1086. line of

  1087. transmission

  1088. here.

  1089. Jesus

  1090. will

  1091. speak to

  1092. the

  1093. Spirit.

  1094. The Spirit

  1095. will hear

  1096. and speak

  1097. to the

  1098. apostles,

  1099. and then

  1100. the apostles

  1101. will go

  1102. out and

  1103. speak what

  1104. they hear

  1105. to the

  1106. world.

  1107. This is

  1108. why we

  1109. call all

  1110. the writings

  1111. of the

  1112. apostles,

  1113. the letters

  1114. in the

  1115. New Testament

  1116. that they

  1117. wrote,

  1118. this is

  1119. why we

  1120. call them

  1121. the word

  1122. of God,

  1123. and not

  1124. just the

  1125. word,

  1126. the words

  1127. of men.

  1128. When Peter

  1129. opened his

  1130. mouth on

  1131. the day

  1132. of Pentecost

  1133. in Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  1134. chapter 2,

  1135. it wasn't

  1136. just Peter

  1137. speaking,

  1138. it was

  1139. Jesus

  1140. speaking to

  1141. the Spirit,

  1142. and the

  1143. Spirit speaking

  1144. to Peter,

  1145. and Peter

  1146. speaking the

  1147. same words

  1148. to the

  1149. people.

  1150. And so

  1151. the most

  1152. important thing

  1153. for us to

  1154. do is to

  1155. humbly

  1156. recognize the

  1157. special,

  1158. unique role

  1159. that the

  1160. Spirit has

  1161. come to

  1162. play in

  1163. the lives

  1164. and ministries

  1165. of the

  1166. apostles,

  1167. guiding them

  1168. into the

  1169. truth,

  1170. and helping

  1171. them to

  1172. relay that

  1173. truth to

  1174. the world,

  1175. to us.

  1176. So give

  1177. your heart

  1178. fully to

  1179. trusting and

  1180. obeying the

  1181. words of

  1182. the apostles

  1183. of Jesus.

  1184. There is a

  1185. real sense in

  1186. which the

  1187. whole New

  1188. Testament is

  1189. red letters.

  1190. Secondly,

  1191. and I want to

  1192. separate this out

  1193. a little bit,

  1194. the Spirit

  1195. of Truth

  1196. comes to

  1197. live in

  1198. every believer,

  1199. not just

  1200. the apostles.

  1201. And he also

  1202. does the work

  1203. of guiding

  1204. every believer

  1205. into the

  1206. truth.

  1207. We see this

  1208. quite clearly

  1209. in 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 2:13–16

  1210. chapter 2,

  1211. verse 13

  1212. to 16,

  1213. which I will

  1214. not go to

  1215. because I'm

  1216. getting on in

  1217. time here.

  1218. But it's there.

  1219. You can read it

  1220. on your own

  1221. time.

  1222. It's not in

  1223. the exact same

  1224. way that the

  1225. Spirit guides

  1226. us into

  1227. truth.

  1228. There's a

  1229. difference.

  1230. God in his

  1231. wisdom saw

  1232. fit to speak

  1233. and to reveal

  1234. to the

  1235. apostles.

  1236. And then,

  1237. for the rest

  1238. of us, he

  1239. guides us into

  1240. the truth by

  1241. opening our

  1242. hearts and

  1243. minds to

  1244. those words

  1245. which he

  1246. spoke through

  1247. them to

  1248. us.

  1249. us.

  1250. And this

  1251. usually is a

  1252. very subjective

  1253. and mysterious

  1254. thing.

  1255. How the

  1256. Spirit guides

  1257. each one of

  1258. us into

  1259. the truth.

  1260. We sometimes

  1261. like to speak

  1262. of a little

  1263. whisper that

  1264. we hear.

  1265. And truth be

  1266. told, some

  1267. people often

  1268. confuse the

  1269. whisper of the

  1270. Spirit with

  1271. their own

  1272. thoughts from

  1273. their own

  1274. hearts.

  1275. amazingly, the

  1276. Spirit seems to

  1277. work beneath

  1278. our hearts,

  1279. doing this

  1280. work of

  1281. guiding us

  1282. into the

  1283. truth.

  1284. Oftentimes, we

  1285. look back on

  1286. something in

  1287. our lives and

  1288. we realize that

  1289. yes, boy, did

  1290. God by his

  1291. Spirit ever

  1292. help us to

  1293. see that clearly

  1294. at just the

  1295. right time.

  1296. But in the

  1297. present, it's

  1298. not always easy

  1299. to discern his

  1300. guiding.

  1301. again, the

  1302. passage up

  1303. there is the

  1304. one to look

  1305. to for this.

  1306. Paul tells

  1307. us that we

  1308. have received

  1309. the mind of

  1310. Christ and

  1311. that the

  1312. Spirit of

  1313. God enables

  1314. us to make

  1315. judgments and

  1316. discern things.

  1317. So I'm just

  1318. going to give

  1319. you the statement

  1320. about how we

  1321. should live in

  1322. light of his

  1323. guiding work in

  1324. us.

  1325. Two things.

  1326. We should be

  1327. careful not to

  1328. assume that every

  1329. thought or whisper

  1330. in our heads is

  1331. from the Spirit.

  1332. But we can

  1333. trust, we can

  1334. rely on this,

  1335. that God's

  1336. Spirit is at

  1337. work in us

  1338. to help us

  1339. examine everything,

  1340. including our

  1341. own thoughts,

  1342. in the light of

  1343. God's Word,

  1344. leading us to a

  1345. knowledge of the

  1346. truth.

  1347. truth.

  1348. I'm going to

  1349. say that one

  1350. more time.

  1351. We can trust and

  1352. rely on this,

  1353. that God's Spirit

  1354. is at work in

  1355. us to help us

  1356. examine everything,

  1357. including our own

  1358. thoughts, in the

  1359. light of God's

  1360. Word, which over

  1361. time leads us

  1362. more and more

  1363. increasingly to a

  1364. knowledge of the

  1365. truth.

  1366. truth.

  1367. So I'm just

  1368. going to sum up

  1369. this morning and

  1370. then we'll pray.

  1371. Jesus promised

  1372. that the Spirit of

  1373. truth would come,

  1374. and He has.

  1375. Jesus taught that

  1376. the Spirit would

  1377. convict the world,

  1378. and He does.

  1379. And we should

  1380. listen and obey

  1381. His convicting

  1382. voice when we

  1383. hear it.

  1384. Jesus told the

  1385. apostles that the

  1386. Spirit would speak

  1387. His words to

  1388. them, guiding

  1389. them into all

  1390. the truth, and

  1391. He did.

  1392. And so we should

  1393. listen to and

  1394. obey the apostles

  1395. of Jesus.

  1396. And God, by His

  1397. Spirit, continues to

  1398. guide all of His

  1399. people in a

  1400. different sort of

  1401. way by His

  1402. Spirit.

  1403. And so we should

  1404. think carefully

  1405. about everything

  1406. in light of God's

  1407. Word, trusting

  1408. that the Spirit

  1409. will do that work

  1410. of getting our

  1411. understanding to

  1412. the truth.

  1413. Let's pray.

  1414. Father in Heaven,

  1415. thank You for

  1416. sending the

  1417. Spirit.

  1418. This is a

  1419. mysterious part of

  1420. our relationship

  1421. with You.

  1422. Dare I say,

  1423. some of us,

  1424. we don't even

  1425. feel the Spirit

  1426. moving or at

  1427. work.

  1428. sometimes.

  1429. Other times we

  1430. think we do.

  1431. Do we?

  1432. It's such a

  1433. mystery.

  1434. But our faith is

  1435. in You.

  1436. Our trust is in

  1437. You.

  1438. And as we look

  1439. back on our lives,

  1440. You have been

  1441. faithful.

  1442. You've helped us

  1443. find our way.

  1444. You've opened our

  1445. eyes to the

  1446. goodness and

  1447. grace of Jesus.

  1448. And so we say

  1449. thank You.

  1450. Thank You for

  1451. the Spirit and

  1452. the work that He

  1453. does in our

  1454. lives.

  1455. Teach us more.

  1456. Help us to live

  1457. by faith in

  1458. His power.

  1459. We ask this in

  1460. Jesus' name.

  1461. Amen.
