  1. Well, this morning we are going to partake of the Lord's Table again.

  2. That'll be the focus of our service.

  3. And so I thought it'd be appropriate to spend some time this morning

  4. deepening our understanding of the Lord's Table.

  5. What are we doing as we eat and drink from this table?

  6. And why do we do this?

  7. So we're opening our Bibles this morning to 1 Corinthians 11, verse 17.

    1 Corinthians 11:17

  8. Now, this letter was written by the Apostle Paul to the church at Corinth.

  9. It's estimated that he wrote this letter about 20 years after Jesus ascended into heaven

  10. and about four or five years after this church here in Corinth was established.

  11. So this is a relatively young church.

  12. Paul has some words of encouragement for them.

  13. He commends them for some things and gives them instructions.

  14. But if you're familiar with this letter that Paul has written,

  15. he also offers them many words of correction.

  16. There were quite a few things that they were doing there in the church at Corinth

  17. that were unfitting to their profession of faith in Jesus.

  18. And so Paul, having got word of these things, is writing partially to address some of them.

  19. And one of these things where the Corinthian Christians have been failing

  20. is their observance of the Lord's Supper.

  21. So let's listen to what Paul had to say to them here in 1 Corinthians 11, verse 17.

    1 Corinthians 11:17

  22. He writes,

  23. In the following directives, I have no praise for you,

  24. for your meetings do more harm than good.

  25. In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church,

  26. there are divisions among you.

  27. And to some extent, I believe it.

  28. No doubt there have to be differences among you

  29. to show which of you have God's approval.

  30. So then, when you come together, it is not the Lord's Supper you eat.

  31. For when you are eating, some of you go ahead with your own private suppers.

  32. As a result, one person remains hungry and another gets drunk.

  33. Don't you have homes to eat and drink in?

  34. Or do you despise the church of God by humiliating those who have nothing?

  35. What shall I say to you?

  36. Shall I praise you?

  37. Certainly not in this matter.

  38. It must have been hard for the Corinthians to hear these words of Paul the Apostle.

  39. Just moments ago, back up in verse 2,

  40. Paul said this to them.

  41. He said, I praise you for remembering me and everything

  42. and for holding fast to the traditions

  43. just as I pass them on to you.

  44. So it's not all bad.

  45. They have been doing many things well.

  46. They've been holding fast to these traditions

  47. that Paul has passed on to them.

  48. And Paul commends them for that.

  49. He praises them for that.

  50. But now when it comes to this thing

  51. of how they observe the Lord's Supper,

  52. Paul says, I have no praise for you.

  53. In fact, he says, your meetings do more harm than good.

  54. They are for the worse, not the better.

  55. Man, that must have been hard for them to hear.

  56. Now, Paul isn't saying that it would be better for them not to meet.

  57. Rather, it's what they're doing when they meet together

  58. that's resulting in harm.

  59. And we'll see what kind of harm in a moment.

  60. In verse 18, Paul brings up one major cause

  61. or root issue here.

  62. He says that he is aware of the divisions that are among them.

  63. They are a divided church.

  64. Now, Paul's already brought this up

  65. and said a lot about this earlier in the letter.

  66. But it seems to come out here that these divisions

  67. are along certain lines.

  68. Look at verse 22.

  69. Verse 22.

  70. Do you despise the church of God

  71. by humiliating those who have nothing?

  72. So it seems that not only were there divisions and factions

  73. about who's following who in the church,

  74. there was also division between wealthy and poor in the church.

  75. Those who have and those who have nothing.

  76. More about that in a moment.

  77. Paul does, in verse 19, acknowledge

  78. that there is a legitimate reason to have divisions.

  79. It does make sense that if some are not living in obedience to Christ,

  80. not walking by the Spirit,

  81. it will put them at odds with others who are in the church.

  82. There will be a bit of a divide there.

  83. But now Paul brings to the forefront

  84. what exactly it is that they are doing

  85. which is causing harm in the church.

  86. He says,

  87. So then, when you come together,

  88. it is not the Lord's Supper you eat.

  89. For when you're eating,

  90. some of you go ahead with your own private suppers.

  91. As a result,

  92. one person remains hungry

  93. and another person gets drunk.

  94. That's pretty serious.

  95. It may also sound a little strange to us.

  96. When we do the Lord's Table,

  97. we do it so differently today in our culture.

  98. But it seems from the passage here

  99. that when they gathered to have the Lord's Supper,

  100. they would not just pass around a little piece of bread and cup like we do,

  101. but they would have a full meal.

  102. A church meal.

  103. Perhaps a celebratory banquet.

  104. After all,

  105. the Lord's Supper was done the first time by Jesus

  106. with his disciples at Passover.

  107. It was done around a table.

  108. It was a full meal.

  109. And it was a celebration kind of meal.

  110. But what started out

  111. as a very Christ-honoring celebration for the Corinthians

  112. has now turned into something ugly.

  113. Something very hurtful.

  114. Even spiritually damaging to the church.

  115. So much so that Paul says,

  116. it is not the Lord's Supper

  117. that you are eating.

  118. Wow.

  119. So what are they doing wrong?

  120. Paul says that some of them are going ahead

  121. with their own private suppers,

  122. leaving others to go hungry.

  123. Some of them are getting drunk,

  124. while others, it seems,

  125. are getting nothing.

  126. How could this be?

  127. It seems here that part of the divisions

  128. are along these lines

  129. of those who have much

  130. and those who have very little or nothing.

  131. Probably the church was gathering at this time

  132. in the home of a wealthy person

  133. who had the means to host the gathering

  134. and the space

  135. and to put on the meal.

  136. And many of the wealthy

  137. either wouldn't need to work

  138. or if they did work,

  139. they could get the day off

  140. or they could get off a little earlier from work.

  141. They could be there nice and early

  142. for the celebration.

  143. But those who were poor

  144. likely worked most of the day.

  145. Or if they were slaves,

  146. they couldn't leave

  147. until they were allowed to

  148. by their master

  149. to come and participate.

  150. The picture here, as we get,

  151. is that they did their best

  152. to get there when they could.

  153. And it seems to be a case

  154. of wealth and privilege

  155. in which the wealthy

  156. just decided to go ahead with the meal.

  157. Start eating and drinking.

  158. Not everybody had even showed up yet.

  159. So that by the time

  160. those who were poor

  161. arrived,

  162. there was nothing left.

  163. And those who had gone ahead

  164. were drunk.

  165. Can you imagine this?

  166. You show up to a church potluck.

  167. You just get down into the basement.

  168. You got there as soon as you could.

  169. And every dish,

  170. every bowl

  171. is empty.

  172. And there's a group of people

  173. over there in the other room

  174. and they're drunk.

  175. Man, that must have hurt.

  176. The wonder Paul is livid.

  177. He rebukes them

  178. very sharply.

  179. He says,

  180. Don't you have homes

  181. to eat and drink in?

  182. This is meant to be

  183. a special meal

  184. by which we remember

  185. Jesus Christ.

  186. The purpose of this meal

  187. is not just to eat

  188. and get full,

  189. to party

  190. and have a good time.

  191. Essentially,

  192. what he's saying is

  193. if you're hungry,

  194. eat at home

  195. before you come.

  196. That way,

  197. there will be enough

  198. to go around for everybody.

  199. Paul will echo this again

  200. down in verse 34.

  201. He says,

  202. Anyone who is hungry

  203. should eat something at home

  204. so that when you meet together

  205. it may not result

  206. in judgment.

  207. More about that word

  208. judgment later.

  209. I was trying to think

  210. of how I could put this

  211. in modern terms.

  212. Imagine that you were invited

  213. to a wedding

  214. and the time came

  215. for the speeches

  216. and the toasts.

  217. People to stand up

  218. and to say things

  219. to honor the bride

  220. and the groom.

  221. But then when someone

  222. goes to ask

  223. those serving the drink

  224. to top up

  225. everybody's glass,

  226. they tell you,

  227. embarrassed,

  228. that there's nothing left.

  229. Why?

  230. Because a group of guests

  231. snuck into the back room

  232. where the alcohol

  233. was being kept

  234. and they pounded it all back

  235. until they were sloshed.

  236. Can you imagine that?

  237. This is outrageous.

  238. It's totally out of sync

  239. with the whole purpose

  240. of the occasion.

  241. Paul asks

  242. the rhetorical question,

  243. do you despise

  244. the church of God?

  245. In other words,

  246. speaking to those

  247. who are going ahead

  248. and getting drunk,

  249. what you're doing,

  250. your behavior,

  251. it shows utter contempt

  252. for God's people

  253. and for the gathering

  254. of his people.

  255. Do you shame

  256. those who have nothing?

  257. Says Paul.

  258. What you're doing

  259. is humiliating

  260. those brothers and sisters

  261. in Christ

  262. who either

  263. don't have the freedom

  264. to get there earlier

  265. or don't have the means

  266. to bring anything

  267. when they come.

  268. Maybe they're barely

  269. able to put food

  270. on their own table.

  271. He says,

  272. shall I praise you?

  273. Certainly not

  274. in this matter.

  275. So Paul has exposed

  276. what they are doing

  277. that is wrong,

  278. that is harmful.

  279. And now he's going

  280. to tell them

  281. about what the Lord's

  282. Supper

  283. is all about.

  284. Verse 23.

  285. He says,

  286. For I received

  287. from the Lord

  288. what I also

  289. passed on to you.

  290. The Lord Jesus,

  291. on the night

  292. he was betrayed,

  293. took bread,

  294. and when he had

  295. given thanks,

  296. he broke it

  297. and said,

  298. This is my body,

  299. which is for you.

  300. Do this in remembrance

  301. of me.

  302. In the same way,

  303. after supper,

  304. he took the cup,

  305. saying,

  306. This cup is the new

  307. covenant in my blood.

  308. Do this,

  309. whenever you drink it,

  310. in remembrance of me.

  311. For whenever you eat

  312. this bread and drink

  313. this cup,

  314. says Paul,

  315. you proclaim

  316. the Lord's death

  317. until he comes.

  318. So Paul is trying

  319. to reground them.

  320. There are times

  321. when traditions

  322. that we hold to

  323. drift so far away

  324. from the reason

  325. they were started

  326. that they no longer

  327. reflect the true

  328. purpose of the occasion.

  329. So what does Paul do?

  330. He takes them

  331. back to the source.

  332. Back to the very night

  333. that Jesus instituted

  334. the Lord's Supper

  335. to remind them

  336. of what it's all about.

  337. Paul says,

  338. For I received

  339. from the Lord

  340. what I also

  341. passed on to you.

  342. Paul wasn't at the table

  343. on the night

  344. of Jesus' betrayal.

  345. In fact,

  346. he didn't even become

  347. a follower of Jesus

  348. until after Jesus

  349. had ascended into heaven.

  350. So we might wonder,

  351. how does Paul know

  352. what happened

  353. on the night

  354. of Jesus' betrayal?

  355. How the Lord's Supper

  356. should be done?

  357. Paul says,

  358. I received

  359. what I'm about

  360. to tell you

  361. from the Lord,

  362. from Jesus himself.

  363. In other words,

  364. Jesus spoke

  365. to the Apostle Paul

  366. just like he spoke

  367. to the other Apostles

  368. after he had ascended

  369. to heaven.

  370. And Jesus told Paul

  371. exactly what he did

  372. and said

  373. with the other Apostles

  374. on the night

  375. of his betrayal.

  376. This is direct,

  377. special revelation.

  378. It's not just Paul's guess

  379. at what happened

  380. based on something

  381. that Peter had told him.

  382. No, Jesus

  383. is the source here.

  384. Jesus told it

  385. to Paul

  386. and then Paul

  387. explained it

  388. and passed it along

  389. to the Corinthians.

  390. And what did Jesus do

  391. and say?

  392. Paul tells us

  393. that Jesus took bread.

  394. He gave thanks.

  395. He prayed

  396. and thanked God

  397. for it.

  398. And then he broke

  399. the bread

  400. into pieces.

  401. And Jesus said

  402. he did this

  403. while saying

  404. this is my body

  405. which is for you.

  406. Do this in remembrance

  407. of me.

  408. So on the night

  409. of his betrayal

  410. Jesus gave the disciples

  411. a picture,

  412. a metaphor

  413. using that bread

  414. that was in his hands.

  415. He broke it

  416. which symbolized

  417. his death.

  418. And then he passed

  419. out the pieces

  420. of the bread

  421. to all the disciples

  422. at the table

  423. which symbolizes

  424. that they are

  425. to benefit.

  426. They are to receive

  427. something

  428. from his death.

  429. Now Paul doesn't

  430. explain all of the

  431. symbolism here

  432. to the Corinthians

  433. but Jesus did explain it

  434. when he taught

  435. the crowds

  436. in John chapter 6.

    John 6 chapter mention

  437. just as bread

  438. is something

  439. that sustains

  440. and gives life

  441. to the body

  442. in the same way

  443. Jesus' death

  444. his body

  445. broken

  446. will bring life

  447. to them.

  448. And so Jesus says

  449. this is my body

  450. which is

  451. for you.

  452. In other words

  453. me

  454. dying on the cross

  455. it's for you.

  456. it's for you

  457. my disciples.

  458. You are to benefit

  459. from what's

  460. going to happen

  461. tomorrow.

  462. Similarly

  463. Paul explains

  464. what Jesus did

  465. with the cup.

  466. Verse 25

  467. after the supper

  468. he took the cup

  469. and he said

  470. this cup

  471. is the new covenant

  472. in my blood.

  473. And again

  474. Paul doesn't

  475. explain

  476. exactly

  477. what that means.

  478. There's a lot

  479. of symbolism here

  480. but we know it

  481. from what the other

  482. gospel writers

  483. recorded

  484. and what it says

  485. in other places

  486. in the Bible.

  487. The idea here

  488. is that Jesus' death

  489. will inaugurate

  490. will bring about

  491. a new deal

  492. a new arrangement

  493. between God

  494. and man.

  495. We could take

  496. a whole series

  497. of sermons

  498. just to understand

  499. all that there is

  500. to this new

  501. covenant

  502. relationship.

  503. how it compares

  504. with the old covenant

  505. but basically

  506. to sum it up

  507. Jesus

  508. by his death

  509. is about to offer

  510. the ultimate

  511. sacrifice

  512. to atone

  513. for sins

  514. so that people

  515. can be forgiven

  516. completely

  517. and forever

  518. of all the wrongs

  519. that they have done

  520. and become

  521. permanent citizens

  522. in God's

  523. kingdom

  524. members

  525. of his family

  526. members

  527. of his household

  528. people who will

  529. inherit eternal

  530. life

  531. and all the good

  532. things that God

  533. has been promising

  534. to his people

  535. since the very

  536. beginning.

  537. Essentially

  538. Jesus is saying

  539. my death

  540. my blood

  541. is about to

  542. open up

  543. that new

  544. arrangement

  545. that new

  546. relationship

  547. between

  548. God

  549. and you.

  550. that's what

  551. this meal

  552. the Lord's

  553. supper

  554. is all about

  555. says Paul

  556. it's about

  557. Jesus

  558. and his

  559. death

  560. and what

  561. his death

  562. gives

  563. and brings

  564. to you

  565. and in the

  566. midst of this

  567. Paul really

  568. presses home

  569. why

  570. we should

  571. observe

  572. the Lord's

  573. supper

  574. what's the

  575. reason

  576. that we're

  577. to do

  578. this

  579. the first

  580. reason he

  581. gives

  582. is because

  583. Jesus

  584. commanded

  585. it

  586. do this

  587. said Jesus

  588. do this

  589. whenever

  590. you drink

  591. it

  592. and the

  593. sense we

  594. get from

  595. Jesus

  596. words

  597. when he

  598. says

  599. whenever

  600. you

  601. drink

  602. it

  603. we

  604. get the

  605. sense

  606. that

  607. he

  608. didn't

  609. mean

  610. just

  611. do

  612. it

  613. one

  614. time

  615. right

  616. here

  617. right

  618. now

  619. in

  620. remembrance

  621. of

  622. me

  623. no

  624. he

  625. meant

  626. as an

  627. ongoing

  628. regular

  629. thing

  630. from

  631. now

  632. on

  633. when

  634. you

  635. do

  636. this

  637. do

  638. it

  639. in

  640. remembrance

  641. of

  642. me

  643. Paul's

  644. highlighting

  645. the

  646. fact

  647. that

  648. Jesus

  649. deliberately

  650. gave

  651. them

  652. a

  653. tradition

  654. he

  655. commanded

  656. them

  657. to do

  658. this

  659. thing

  660. with

  661. bread

  662. and

  663. cup

  664. not

  665. just

  666. once

  667. but

  668. again

  669. and

  670. again

  671. repeatedly

  672. that's

  673. why

  674. sometimes

  675. we

  676. call

  677. it

  678. an

  679. ordinance

  680. because

  681. it's

  682. something

  683. he

  684. ordained

  685. something

  686. he

  687. commanded

  688. us

  689. to do

  690. and for

  691. what

  692. purpose

  693. Jesus

  694. is

  695. that the

  696. purpose

  697. was to

  698. remember

  699. him

  700. do this

  701. in

  702. remembrance

  703. of me

  704. drink

  705. it in

  706. remembrance

  707. remembrance

  708. of me

  709. this

  710. thing

  711. that we're

  712. to do

  713. it's

  714. a

  715. memorial

  716. it's

  717. a

  718. it's

  719. a thing

  720. we're

  721. doing

  722. to

  723. remember

  724. Jesus

  725. and

  726. his

  727. death

  728. so we

  729. observe

  730. the

  731. Lord's

  732. table

  733. because

  734. Jesus

  735. commanded

  736. it

  737. we

  738. observe

  739. the

  740. Lord's

  741. table

  742. to

  743. remember

  744. Jesus

  745. and

  746. then

  747. Paul

  748. throws

  749. in a

  750. third

  751. reason

  752. in

  753. verse

  754. 26

  755. he

  756. says

  757. for

  758. whenever

  759. you

  760. eat

  761. this

  762. bread

  763. and

  764. drink

  765. this

  766. cup

  767. you

  768. proclaim

  769. the

  770. Lord's

  771. death

  772. until

  773. he

  774. comes

  775. I

  776. really

  777. like

  778. these

  779. words

  780. of

  781. Paul

  782. because

  783. I

  784. spend

  785. a lot

  786. of

  787. my

  788. time

  789. up

  790. here

  791. preaching

  792. but

  793. there's

  794. a

  795. sense

  796. in

  797. which

  798. every

  799. one

  800. of

  801. us

  802. is

  803. called

  804. to

  805. be

  806. a

  807. preacher

  808. Paul

  809. tells

  810. us

  811. here

  812. that

  813. we

  814. are

  815. to

  816. be

  817. preachers

  818. of

  819. the

  820. gospel

  821. we

  822. are

  823. to

  824. preach

  825. the

  826. death

  827. of

  828. Jesus

  829. it's

  830. to

  831. be

  832. something

  833. that

  834. we

  835. proclaim

  836. and

  837. declare

  838. each

  839. one

  840. of

  841. us

  842. who

  843. believes

  844. again

  845. and

  846. again

  847. by

  848. eating

  849. and

  850. drinking

  851. this

  852. bread

  853. and

  854. this

  855. cup

  856. we're

  857. to

  858. keep

  859. doing

  860. that

  861. until

  862. the

  863. Lord

  864. returns

  865. so

  866. this

  867. is

  868. that

  869. third

  870. purpose

  871. to

  872. proclaim

  873. the

  874. Lord's

  875. death

  876. to

  877. proclaim

  878. our

  879. faith

  880. in

  881. it

  882. our

  883. acceptance

  884. of

  885. it

  886. our

  887. love

  888. of

  889. what

  890. he

  891. did

  892. for

  893. us

  894. we're

  895. to

  896. keep

  897. this

  898. proclamation

  899. going

  900. until

  901. the

  902. risen

  903. Lord

  904. Jesus

  905. returns

  906. let me

  907. just

  908. recap

  909. Paul

  910. gives

  911. three

  912. reasons

  913. why

  914. we

  915. should

  916. observe

  917. the

  918. Lord's

  919. supper

  920. repeatedly

  921. again

  922. and

  923. again

  924. as

  925. followers

  926. of

  927. Christ

  928. number

  929. one

  930. Jesus

  931. commanded

  932. us

  933. to

  934. do

  935. it

  936. number

  937. two

  938. it's

  939. to

  940. remember

  941. him

  942. it's

  943. as a

  944. remembrance

  945. of

  946. him

  947. and

  948. number

  949. three

  950. it's

  951. to

  952. proclaim

  953. his

  954. death

  955. the

  956. gospel

  957. the

  958. good

  959. news

  960. until

  961. he

  962. comes

  963. and

  964. in

  965. that

  966. third

  967. one

  968. there

  969. is

  970. a

  971. sense

  972. in

  973. which

  974. declaring

  975. it

  976. it's

  977. a

  978. way

  979. that

  980. we

  981. can

  982. personally

  983. put

  984. our

  985. trust

  986. and

  987. our

  988. faith

  989. in

  990. the

  991. gospel

  992. again

  993. and

  994. again

  995. continually

  996. but

  997. there's

  998. also

  999. a

  1000. public

  1001. sense

  1002. too

  1003. in

  1004. which

  1005. what

  1006. we're

  1007. doing

  1008. is

  1009. declaring

  1010. the

  1011. gospel

  1012. to

  1013. the

  1014. world

  1015. who

  1016. is

  1017. watching

  1018. so

  1019. now

  1020. we're

  1021. starting

  1022. to see

  1023. the

  1024. problem

  1025. with

  1026. how

  1027. the

  1028. Corinthians

  1029. are

  1030. doing

  1031. the

  1032. Lord's

  1033. supper

  1034. or

  1035. if

  1036. we

  1037. go

  1038. with

  1039. Paul's

  1040. words

  1041. how

  1042. they're

  1043. failing

  1044. to

  1045. observe

  1046. the

  1047. Lord's

  1048. supper

  1049. the

  1050. Lord's

  1051. supper

  1052. is

  1053. meant

  1054. to

  1055. be

  1056. focused

  1057. on

  1058. Jesus

  1059. and

  1060. what

  1061. his

  1062. death

  1063. has

  1064. accomplished

  1065. for

  1066. us

  1067. but

  1068. here

  1069. in

  1070. Corinth

  1071. their

  1072. practice

  1073. of

  1074. it

  1075. has

  1076. degenerated

  1077. it's

  1078. drifted

  1079. away

  1080. from

  1081. that

  1082. into

  1083. a

  1084. sacrilegious

  1085. party

  1086. time

  1087. where

  1088. the

  1089. rich

  1090. eat

  1091. and

  1092. drink

  1093. themselves

  1094. into

  1095. a

  1096. drunken

  1097. stupor

  1098. in

  1099. the

  1100. name

  1101. of

  1102. Jesus

  1103. while

  1104. the

  1105. poor

  1106. and

  1107. needy

  1108. among

  1109. them

  1110. are

  1111. left

  1112. out

  1113. and

  1114. humiliated

  1115. and

  1116. so we

  1117. expect

  1118. that

  1119. Paul's

  1120. about

  1121. to

  1122. tell

  1123. us

  1124. quite

  1125. strongly

  1126. how

  1127. God

  1128. feels

  1129. about

  1130. this

  1131. wicked

  1132. thing

  1133. happening

  1134. in

  1135. the

  1136. church

  1137. and

  1138. he

  1139. does

  1140. verse

  1141. 27

  1142. Paul

  1143. says

  1144. so

  1145. then

  1146. whoever

  1147. eats

  1148. the

  1149. bread

  1150. or

  1151. drinks

  1152. the

  1153. cup

  1154. of

  1155. the

  1156. Lord

  1157. in

  1158. an

  1159. unworthy

  1160. manner

  1161. will

  1162. be

  1163. guilty

  1164. of

  1165. sinning

  1166. against

  1167. the

  1168. body

  1169. and

  1170. blood

  1171. of

  1172. the

  1173. Lord

  1174. now

  1175. we're

  1176. getting

  1177. even

  1178. closer

  1179. to

  1180. the

  1181. heart

  1182. of

  1183. why

  1184. their

  1185. gatherings

  1186. are

  1187. doing

  1188. more

  1189. harm

  1190. than

  1191. good

  1192. Paul

  1193. just

  1194. says

  1195. it

  1196. bluntly

  1197. and

  1198. clearly

  1199. he

  1200. spells

  1201. out

  1202. the

  1203. full

  1204. implications

  1205. of

  1206. their

  1207. behaviors

  1208. these

  1209. people

  1210. who

  1211. are

  1212. going

  1213. ahead

  1214. and

  1215. getting

  1216. drunk

  1217. and

  1218. leaving

  1219. people

  1220. out

  1221. they're

  1222. eating

  1223. and

  1224. drinking

  1225. this

  1226. very

  1227. special

  1228. meal

  1229. in

  1230. an

  1231. unworthy

  1232. manner

  1233. says

  1234. Paul

  1235. and

  1236. by

  1237. doing

  1238. so

  1239. they

  1240. are

  1241. sinning

  1242. against

  1243. the

  1244. very

  1245. body

  1246. and

  1247. blood

  1248. of

  1249. Jesus

  1250. himself

  1251. wow

  1252. now

  1253. there is

  1254. some

  1255. discussion

  1256. about

  1257. this

  1258. statement

  1259. what

  1260. does

  1261. it

  1262. mean

  1263. to

  1264. sin

  1265. against

  1266. the

  1267. body

  1268. and

  1269. blood

  1270. of

  1271. the

  1272. Lord

  1273. some

  1274. have

  1275. suggested

  1276. maybe

  1277. you've

  1278. heard

  1279. this

  1280. that

  1281. sinning

  1282. against

  1283. the

  1284. body

  1285. of

  1286. the

  1287. Lord

  1288. means

  1289. sinning

  1290. against

  1291. the

  1292. people

  1293. of

  1294. the

  1295. Lord

  1296. because

  1297. there

  1298. are

  1299. places

  1300. in

  1301. the

  1302. scriptures

  1303. where

  1304. the

  1305. people

  1306. of

  1307. the

  1308. Lord

  1309. are

  1310. referred

  1311. to

  1312. as

  1313. the

  1314. body

  1315. of

  1316. Christ

  1317. while

  1318. this

  1319. idea

  1320. has

  1321. some

  1322. sense

  1323. to

  1324. it

  1325. especially

  1326. in

  1327. this

  1328. passage

  1329. with

  1330. how

  1331. they've

  1332. been

  1333. treating

  1334. their

  1335. fellow

  1336. Corinthians

  1337. within

  1338. the

  1339. local

  1340. body

  1341. I

  1342. don't

  1343. think

  1344. this

  1345. is

  1346. what

  1347. Paul

  1348. means

  1349. first

  1350. of

  1351. all

  1352. they're

  1353. not

  1354. just

  1355. guilty

  1356. of

  1357. sinning

  1358. against

  1359. the

  1360. body

  1361. of

  1362. the

  1363. Lord

  1364. they're

  1365. also

  1366. in

  1367. the

  1368. same

  1369. breath

  1370. guilty

  1371. of

  1372. sinning

  1373. against

  1374. the

  1375. blood

  1376. of

  1377. the

  1378. Lord

  1379. the

  1380. body

  1381. and

  1382. blood

  1383. of

  1384. the

  1385. Lord

  1386. stand

  1387. together

  1388. as

  1389. one

  1390. as

  1391. what

  1392. they're

  1393. guilty

  1394. of

  1395. sinning

  1396. against

  1397. further

  1398. it's

  1399. the

  1400. physical

  1401. body

  1402. of

  1403. Jesus

  1404. and

  1405. the

  1406. physical

  1407. blood

  1408. of

  1409. Jesus

  1410. that's

  1411. in

  1412. view

  1413. here

  1414. Paul

  1415. just

  1416. talked

  1417. about

  1418. how

  1419. Jesus

  1420. said

  1421. this

  1422. is

  1423. my

  1424. body

  1425. this

  1426. cup

  1427. is

  1428. the

  1429. covenant

  1430. in

  1431. my

  1432. blood

  1433. those

  1434. are

  1435. the

  1436. things

  1437. in

  1438. view

  1439. so

  1440. what

  1441. does

  1442. it

  1443. mean

  1444. that

  1445. they

  1446. will

  1447. be

  1448. guilty

  1449. of

  1450. the

  1451. body

  1452. and

  1453. blood

  1454. of

  1455. the

  1456. Lord

  1457. well

  1458. this

  1459. is

  1460. a

  1461. hard

  1462. question

  1463. to

  1464. answer

  1465. is

  1466. Paul

  1467. saying

  1468. that

  1469. they

  1470. will

  1471. somehow

  1472. share

  1473. personally

  1474. in

  1475. the

  1476. guilt

  1477. of

  1478. crucifying

  1479. Jesus

  1480. or

  1481. is he

  1482. saying

  1483. that

  1484. they

  1485. will

  1486. be

  1487. guilty

  1488. of

  1489. treating

  1490. the

  1491. body

  1492. and

  1493. blood

  1494. of

  1495. the

  1496. Lord

  1497. as

  1498. unholy

  1499. I have

  1500. to tell

  1501. you

  1502. I don't

  1503. know

  1504. the

  1505. answer

  1506. but

  1507. whatever

  1508. this

  1509. means

  1510. this

  1511. seems

  1512. by

  1513. the

  1514. description

  1515. to be

  1516. almost

  1517. the most

  1518. serious

  1519. kind

  1520. of

  1521. guilt

  1522. that

  1523. a

  1524. person

  1525. can

  1526. have

  1527. we'll

  1528. skip over

  1529. verse 28

  1530. and come

  1531. back to it

  1532. in a

  1533. moment

  1534. but let's

  1535. keep the

  1536. flow of

  1537. Paul's

  1538. logic

  1539. here

  1540. with

  1541. verse 29

  1542. Paul says

  1543. for those

  1544. who eat

  1545. and drink

  1546. without

  1547. discerning

  1548. the body

  1549. of Christ

  1550. eat

  1551. and drink

  1552. judgment

  1553. on

  1554. themselves

  1555. again

  1556. I don't

  1557. think this

  1558. means that

  1559. they fail

  1560. to remember

  1561. the other

  1562. people of

  1563. the body

  1564. of Christ

  1565. with whom

  1566. they're

  1567. eating

  1568. the context

  1569. and the

  1570. flow of

  1571. Paul's

  1572. argument

  1573. points

  1574. the other

  1575. direction

  1576. it's that

  1577. they fail

  1578. to recognize

  1579. what the

  1580. elements

  1581. the bread

  1582. and the

  1583. cup

  1584. represent

  1585. that the

  1586. bread

  1587. represents

  1588. the body

  1589. of Jesus

  1590. himself

  1591. broken

  1592. as he

  1593. died

  1594. on the

  1595. cross

  1596. the problem

  1597. is that

  1598. they're

  1599. partaking

  1600. flippantly

  1601. cavalierly

  1602. they're getting

  1603. drunk

  1604. on the

  1605. wine

  1606. they're

  1607. partaking

  1608. of these

  1609. symbolic

  1610. elements

  1611. at this

  1612. special

  1613. meal

  1614. without

  1615. a sincere

  1616. personal

  1617. regard

  1618. for the

  1619. body

  1620. and blood

  1621. of Jesus

  1622. the one

  1623. who died

  1624. to save

  1625. them

  1626. and so

  1627. what does

  1628. Paul say

  1629. here

  1630. he says

  1631. whoever

  1632. eats

  1633. the bread

  1634. and drinks

  1635. the cup

  1636. in this

  1637. manner

  1638. eats

  1639. and drinks

  1640. judgment

  1641. on themselves

  1642. wow

  1643. this is

  1644. serious

  1645. God

  1646. does

  1647. take it

  1648. personally

  1649. when people

  1650. sin against

  1651. him

  1652. and this

  1653. sin

  1654. what these

  1655. Corinthians

  1656. are doing

  1657. is so

  1658. wicked

  1659. so grievous

  1660. to God

  1661. that God

  1662. brings

  1663. disciplinary

  1664. judgment

  1665. on them

  1666. listen to

  1667. this

  1668. he says

  1669. for those

  1670. who eat

  1671. and drink

  1672. without

  1673. discerning

  1674. the body

  1675. of Christ

  1676. eat and

  1677. drink

  1678. judgment

  1679. on

  1680. themselves

  1681. that

  1682. is why

  1683. many

  1684. among

  1685. you

  1686. are weak

  1687. and sick

  1688. and a

  1689. number of

  1690. you have

  1691. fallen

  1692. asleep

  1693. fallen

  1694. asleep

  1695. is a

  1696. euphemism

  1697. here for

  1698. have died

  1699. do you

  1700. hear this

  1701. Paul is

  1702. saying

  1703. that right

  1704. now

  1705. some of

  1706. the

  1707. Corinthians

  1708. are weak

  1709. sick

  1710. even have

  1711. died

  1712. as

  1713. disciplinary

  1714. judgment

  1715. because of

  1716. how they've

  1717. been sinning

  1718. against the

  1719. body and

  1720. blood of

  1721. the Lord

  1722. Jesus

  1723. when they

  1724. gather to

  1725. observe the

  1726. Lord's

  1727. supper

  1728. this right

  1729. here is I

  1730. think what

  1731. Paul had in

  1732. mind when he

  1733. said earlier

  1734. that he had

  1735. no praise

  1736. for them

  1737. and that

  1738. their

  1739. meetings

  1740. are doing

  1741. more harm

  1742. than good

  1743. not only are

  1744. they harming

  1745. each other

  1746. but they're

  1747. harming

  1748. themselves

  1749. spiritually

  1750. they're

  1751. bringing

  1752. on

  1753. themselves

  1754. the

  1755. disciplinary

  1756. judgment

  1757. of God

  1758. now it's

  1759. very important

  1760. here that we

  1761. distinguish between

  1762. what I'll call

  1763. punitive

  1764. judgment

  1765. and disciplinary

  1766. judgment

  1767. this judgment

  1768. this consequence

  1769. comes on

  1770. them not as

  1771. punishment for

  1772. their sins

  1773. but as a

  1774. form of

  1775. discipline

  1776. listen to

  1777. what Paul

  1778. says in

  1779. verse 32

  1780. he says

  1781. nevertheless

  1782. when we

  1783. are judged

  1784. in this

  1785. way by

  1786. the Lord

  1787. we are

  1788. being

  1789. disciplined

  1790. so that

  1791. we will

  1792. not be

  1793. finally

  1794. condemned

  1795. with the

  1796. world

  1797. amazingly

  1798. if we

  1799. belong to

  1800. Christ

  1801. then Jesus

  1802. death on

  1803. the cross

  1804. for us

  1805. has so

  1806. truly

  1807. and finally

  1808. atoned for

  1809. our sins

  1810. that even

  1811. when we do

  1812. such terrible

  1813. things as

  1814. this

  1815. what these

  1816. Corinthians

  1817. are doing

  1818. it doesn't

  1819. take away

  1820. our salvation

  1821. we don't

  1822. lose it

  1823. it doesn't

  1824. make us

  1825. liable to

  1826. eternal

  1827. punishment

  1828. rather

  1829. God brings

  1830. this form of

  1831. judgment upon

  1832. them as a

  1833. means of

  1834. correction

  1835. for those

  1836. who are

  1837. sick and

  1838. weak to

  1839. teach them

  1840. how they

  1841. ought to be

  1842. living that

  1843. they shouldn't

  1844. be living

  1845. this way

  1846. they should

  1847. be living

  1848. this way

  1849. it's to

  1850. bring them

  1851. to repentance

  1852. for those

  1853. who have

  1854. died perhaps

  1855. it's to

  1856. keep them

  1857. from continuing

  1858. to do

  1859. this things

  1860. that they've

  1861. been doing

  1862. spiritual harm

  1863. to themselves

  1864. and others

  1865. now I know

  1866. as soon as

  1867. we get into

  1868. this it raises

  1869. some big

  1870. questions

  1871. some of

  1872. you might

  1873. be thinking

  1874. this

  1875. does God

  1876. bring this

  1877. same form of

  1878. disciplinary

  1879. judgment on

  1880. all his

  1881. children

  1882. even me

  1883. sickness

  1884. weakness

  1885. even death

  1886. if we sin

  1887. against God

  1888. well this is

  1889. much debated

  1890. other passages

  1891. such as

  1892. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  1893. 12 talk

  1894. about how

  1895. God disciplines

  1896. all of his

  1897. children for

  1898. their good

  1899. allowing things

  1900. like hardship

  1901. in our lives

  1902. in order to

  1903. train us

  1904. to live

  1905. righteously

  1906. but I would

  1907. urge caution

  1908. here

  1909. I think we

  1910. should be slow

  1911. to draw a

  1912. principle here

  1913. about how

  1914. God usually

  1915. or always

  1916. works in

  1917. the lives

  1918. of his

  1919. children

  1920. first of all

  1921. this thing

  1922. some of the

  1923. Corinthians are

  1924. doing is

  1925. especially

  1926. grievous

  1927. it's hurtful

  1928. to the

  1929. whole church

  1930. it's

  1931. sacrilegious

  1932. it dishonors

  1933. the name

  1934. of Christ

  1935. it treats

  1936. something very

  1937. special

  1938. and holy

  1939. as if it

  1940. were profane

  1941. and unholy

  1942. could it be

  1943. that God

  1944. reserves this

  1945. severity

  1946. of discipline

  1947. for those

  1948. who are

  1949. willfully

  1950. and repeatedly

  1951. committing the

  1952. worst

  1953. of sins

  1954. perhaps

  1955. another

  1956. angle

  1957. here

  1958. or another

  1959. question

  1960. we could

  1961. ask

  1962. is

  1963. should we

  1964. always be

  1965. looking at

  1966. the bad

  1967. stuff that

  1968. happens to

  1969. us

  1970. as God

  1971. judging us

  1972. for particular

  1973. sins

  1974. well we know

  1975. from the story

  1976. of Job

  1977. that God

  1978. sometimes

  1979. allows bad

  1980. stuff to

  1981. happen to

  1982. us

  1983. for other

  1984. purposes

  1985. even when we

  1986. haven't sinned

  1987. it's possible

  1988. to go through

  1989. this Christian

  1990. life

  1991. always worried

  1992. always afraid

  1993. always assuming

  1994. that everything

  1995. that happens

  1996. to us

  1997. that's bad

  1998. is God

  1999. judging us

  2000. or even

  2001. punishing us

  2002. for our sins

  2003. but as I said

  2004. before the truth

  2005. is that Jesus

  2006. already took

  2007. the full punishment

  2008. for our sins

  2009. on the cross

  2010. when he died

  2011. he made full

  2012. atonement for us

  2013. that's the good

  2014. news

  2015. and so I would

  2016. say rather than

  2017. always worrying

  2018. or wondering

  2019. whether the bad

  2020. things that

  2021. happen to us

  2022. in life

  2023. are God

  2024. bringing this

  2025. sort of

  2026. judgment

  2027. on you

  2028. or on

  2029. someone else

  2030. simply make

  2031. it your aim

  2032. to please

  2033. the Lord

  2034. to live in a

  2035. way that

  2036. honors him

  2037. to be obedient

  2038. to him

  2039. to love one

  2040. another

  2041. as he has

  2042. commanded

  2043. and if we

  2044. keep that

  2045. humble

  2046. and responsive

  2047. heart towards

  2048. God

  2049. thinking carefully

  2050. about how we

  2051. are living

  2052. we don't

  2053. need

  2054. the Lord's

  2055. disciplinary

  2056. judgment

  2057. on our

  2058. lives

  2059. at least

  2060. not like

  2061. this

  2062. I think

  2063. this is

  2064. what Paul

  2065. means in

  2066. verse 31

  2067. when he

  2068. says

  2069. but if we

  2070. were more

  2071. discerning

  2072. with regard

  2073. to ourselves

  2074. we would

  2075. not come

  2076. under

  2077. such judgment

  2078. so I want

  2079. to encourage

  2080. you

  2081. with this

  2082. these sober

  2083. words

  2084. I want to

  2085. encourage you

  2086. to let these

  2087. words put

  2088. some fear

  2089. of God

  2090. into your

  2091. heart

  2092. enough that

  2093. it makes

  2094. you think

  2095. twice

  2096. about doing

  2097. something you

  2098. know is

  2099. wicked

  2100. God will

  2101. not allow

  2102. you to sin

  2103. and sin

  2104. and sin

  2105. and just go

  2106. on doing

  2107. it willfully

  2108. without any

  2109. thought to

  2110. it with

  2111. no consequence

  2112. but

  2113. at the same

  2114. time

  2115. remember

  2116. that God

  2117. loves you

  2118. he is for

  2119. you

  2120. that's why

  2121. he sent

  2122. Christ

  2123. and he

  2124. will bring

  2125. what discipline

  2126. or correction

  2127. you need

  2128. at the time

  2129. that you need

  2130. it so that

  2131. you have

  2132. that outcome

  2133. that we all

  2134. desire

  2135. so that we

  2136. will not be

  2137. finally condemned

  2138. with the world

  2139. final salvation

  2140. so this is

  2141. not a message

  2142. of damnation

  2143. it's a warning

  2144. of God's grace

  2145. it's a message

  2146. of mercy

  2147. finally Paul

  2148. here at the end

  2149. tells them

  2150. what they should

  2151. do as they

  2152. observe this

  2153. special meal

  2154. the Lord's

  2155. supper

  2156. and he gets

  2157. fairly practical

  2158. verse 28

  2159. he says

  2160. everyone ought

  2161. to examine

  2162. themselves

  2163. before they

  2164. eat of the

  2165. bread

  2166. and drink

  2167. from the

  2168. cup

  2169. this is

  2170. why we

  2171. often

  2172. give everyone

  2173. a few

  2174. minutes of

  2175. quiet

  2176. before we

  2177. pass out

  2178. the elements

  2179. it's a chance

  2180. to reflect

  2181. and pray

  2182. it's a chance

  2183. to think

  2184. about how

  2185. your week

  2186. went

  2187. about how

  2188. you're doing

  2189. with the

  2190. Lord

  2191. to confess

  2192. your sins

  2193. to him

  2194. again

  2195. to put

  2196. your heart

  2197. in a right

  2198. place

  2199. so that

  2200. we're not

  2201. eating this

  2202. bread

  2203. and drinking

  2204. this cup

  2205. in a flippant

  2206. manner

  2207. we want to

  2208. be fully

  2209. conscious

  2210. of what

  2211. we are

  2212. doing

  2213. of what

  2214. these

  2215. elements

  2216. represent

  2217. as we

  2218. take them

  2219. verse 33

  2220. Paul says

  2221. so then my

  2222. brothers and

  2223. sisters

  2224. when you

  2225. gather to

  2226. eat

  2227. you should

  2228. all eat

  2229. together

  2230. quite literally

  2231. he says

  2232. when gathering

  2233. to eat

  2234. wait

  2235. for one

  2236. another

  2237. this is

  2238. one of the

  2239. reasons I

  2240. always say

  2241. we will

  2242. wait until

  2243. everyone has

  2244. been served

  2245. and then we

  2246. will eat

  2247. and drink

  2248. together

  2249. we won't

  2250. want to

  2251. be just

  2252. thinking

  2253. about

  2254. ourselves

  2255. this is

  2256. the place

  2257. where we

  2258. see the

  2259. the most

  2260. selfless

  2261. loving act

  2262. in the

  2263. universe

  2264. what Christ

  2265. did for

  2266. us

  2267. how ironic

  2268. if we

  2269. would

  2270. wouldn't even

  2271. wait for

  2272. each other

  2273. to be

  2274. served

  2275. to get

  2276. there

  2277. to the

  2278. meal

  2279. before we

  2280. partake

  2281. there's

  2282. so much

  2283. we could

  2284. go into

  2285. to apply

  2286. all this

  2287. to

  2288. ourselves

  2289. we could

  2290. think about

  2291. other ways

  2292. that we're

  2293. selfish and

  2294. rude

  2295. like these

  2296. wealthy

  2297. Corinthians

  2298. we could

  2299. think about

  2300. how we

  2301. might

  2302. promote

  2303. division

  2304. in our

  2305. church

  2306. or how

  2307. we might

  2308. discriminate

  2309. against

  2310. those

  2311. who are

  2312. different

  2313. by our

  2314. attitudes

  2315. and

  2316. behaviors

  2317. we could

  2318. think about

  2319. ways that

  2320. we could

  2321. show this

  2322. kind of

  2323. love and

  2324. consideration

  2325. in our

  2326. context

  2327. but I'm

  2328. going to

  2329. leave all

  2330. that to

  2331. you for

  2332. your own

  2333. personal

  2334. prayerful

  2335. reflection

  2336. later on

  2337. we want

  2338. to move

  2339. now to

  2340. the Lord's

  2341. Supper

  2342. and partake

  2343. of it

  2344. again

  2345. and so

  2346. I want

  2347. to end

  2348. by pointing

  2349. us as

  2350. Paul did

  2351. to that

  2352. main thing

  2353. that this

  2354. supper is

  2355. all about

  2356. this table

  2357. this meal

  2358. is all about

  2359. Jesus

  2360. and his

  2361. death

  2362. for us

  2363. and why

  2364. did he

  2365. have to

  2366. die

  2367. for us

  2368. because

  2369. we sinned

  2370. we did

  2371. things

  2372. that are

  2373. wrong

  2374. things for

  2375. which we

  2376. deserve

  2377. punishment

  2378. but at

  2379. the cross

  2380. we know

  2381. and believe

  2382. that Jesus

  2383. offered himself

  2384. as the

  2385. sacrifice

  2386. that takes

  2387. away

  2388. our guilt

  2389. he took

  2390. that punishment

  2391. that we

  2392. deserve

  2393. on himself

  2394. so now

  2395. we have

  2396. all of us

  2397. who believe

  2398. a right

  2399. standing

  2400. with God

  2401. this is the

  2402. most precious

  2403. gift

  2404. in all

  2405. of life

  2406. it's a

  2407. gift

  2408. worth

  2409. remembering

  2410. and so

  2411. let's partake

  2412. again

  2413. of the

  2414. table

  2415. to remember

  2416. Jesus

  2417. and what

  2418. he did

  2419. for us

  2420. as usual

  2421. we'll have a

  2422. couple minutes

  2423. of quiet

  2424. prayer

  2425. and reflection

  2426. examine

  2427. yourselves

  2428. before you

  2429. eat and drink

  2430. discern

  2431. recognize

  2432. what this

  2433. bread

  2434. and this

  2435. cup

  2436. represent

  2437. the body

  2438. and blood

  2439. of the

  2440. Lord

  2441. Jesus

  2442. given

  2443. for you

  2444. after a

  2445. few minutes

  2446. of that

  2447. we'll have

  2448. our elders

  2449. come forward

  2450. and they

  2451. will serve

  2452. the bread

  2453. and the

  2454. cup

  2455. if you

  2456. believe in

  2457. Jesus

  2458. and your

  2459. heart is

  2460. right before

  2461. the Lord

  2462. today

  2463. then I

  2464. invite you

  2465. to join

  2466. with us

  2467. remember

  2468. Christ

  2469. with us

  2470. and partake

  2471. if not

  2472. please abstain

  2473. for you've

  2474. heard the

  2475. warning of

  2476. Christ's

  2477. apostle

  2478. about partaking

  2479. in an

  2480. unworthy

  2481. manner

  2482. we'll wait

  2483. until everyone

  2484. has been

  2485. served

  2486. and then

  2487. we'll eat

  2488. and drink

  2489. together

  2490. endure

  2491. and

  2492. Thank you.

  2493. Thank you.

  2494. Thank you.

  2495. Thank you.

  2496. Thank you.

  2497. Thank you.

  2498. Thank you.

  2499. Thank you.

  2500. Thank you.

  2501. Thank you.

  2502. Thank you.

  2503. Thank you.

  2504. Thank you.

  2505. Thank you.

2506. Father in heaven, thank you so much for your great love.

  2507. Thank you.

  2508. Thank you.
