  1. Well, if you have your Bible with you, you can open it up to the Gospel of John, chapter 17.

    John 17 chapter mention

  2. We're still here on the night of Jesus' betrayal.

  3. It's after the Last Supper.

  4. Judas has gone out to enact his betrayal, and Jesus has been teaching and warning and comforting the disciples.

  5. As I suggested in an earlier message, Jesus and his disciples have likely left that upper room where they had the meal,

  6. and they have not yet crossed the Kidron Valley and entered the Garden of Gethsemane.

  7. We don't know exactly where they are right now, but perhaps they found a vineyard along the way somewhere to stop at.

  8. And immediately following all this teaching and warning and comfort that Jesus has been giving,

  9. Jesus breaks into a prayer.

  10. And it's quite a lengthy prayer.

  11. You may have heard of these words of Jesus referred to as his high priestly prayer.

  12. It makes up the entirety of chapter 17, after which Jesus and his disciples will enter the Garden of Gethsemane.

  13. And we'll see the betrayal that happens there.

  14. So let's come now to John 17, verses 1 to 5.

    John 17:1–5

  15. We'll read the first few verses together.

  16. And we'll see what we can hear and understand from these words of Jesus.

  17. After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed,

  18. Father, the hour has come.

  19. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.

  20. For you granted him authority over all people, that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.

  21. Now this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

  22. I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.

  23. And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.

  24. These are very special words to have recorded for us in our Bibles.

  25. It's as though the cover's being pulled back and we're getting a glimpse of something so rare.

  26. Jesus, the Son of God, is now pouring out his heart to the Father.

  27. And we've had glimpses of this special relationship between Jesus and his Father.

  28. But this here's an entire chapter of us being able to hear and see

  29. just how it is that Jesus relates with God, his Father.

  30. We hear how he prays.

  31. So this is very special.

  32. I think of this chapter as almost just like a diamond mine within the Bible.

  33. There's so much in here, so rich, so beautiful, the things that we see here.

  34. Already after these first five verses, we have heard some strange things.

  35. As we've seen all along, there's something wonderful and mysterious to this relationship

  36. that Jesus has with his Father.

  37. It's not like anything that we know.

  38. And so we hear Jesus praying things that we would never pray to God.

  39. We may never in this life get to the bottom of what these things mean

  40. because they reflect a relationship that is truly beyond our comprehension.

  41. And so we'll be content this morning just to understand something, anything,

  42. about this mysterious and wonderful relationship between Jesus and his Father.

  43. So you're going to hear me say a lot in this chapter and in some of the messages ahead here.

  44. I'm not sure.

  45. I don't know.

  46. It seems.

  47. We guess.

  48. Because these are deep waters.

  49. So let's begin with what Jesus says here in verse 1.

  50. Jesus looks toward heaven and he prays,

  51. Father, the hour has come.

  52. Glorify your Son that your Son may glorify you.

  53. So here it is at last.

  54. The hour has come.

  55. If we've been listening carefully throughout the Gospel of John,

  56. there has been for Jesus this hour, this time that is getting closer and closer.

  57. We heard something of this back in John chapter 7 verse 6

    John 7:6

  58. where Jesus said,

  59. My time is not yet here.

  60. And back then, the Festival of Tabernacles was about to happen in Jerusalem

  61. and Jesus' brothers were urging him to go down to Judea

  62. and do a miracle tour leading up to the festival.

  63. They wanted him to go more public,

  64. to stop doing things so much in secret,

  65. to show himself to the world.

  66. And then Jesus, of course, he didn't follow their advice,

  67. but he did end up going down to the festival in Jerusalem.

  68. And while he was there teaching in the temple court,

  69. something he said made some of the Jews there angry with him.

  70. And we read this.

  71. They tried to seize Jesus.

  72. This in John 7 verse 30.

    John 7:30

  73. But no one laid a hand on him.

  74. Why?

  75. Because his hour had not yet come.

  76. So way back in chapter 7,

  77. we've had this sense that an hour is coming for Jesus

  78. when he will be seized.

  79. When they will get their hands on him.

  80. And then, as the story continued on,

  81. Jesus made his last trip to Jerusalem.

  82. In John chapter 12,

    John 12 chapter mention

  83. just after he made his triumphal entry,

  84. you'll recall that there were some Greeks who wanted to see Jesus.

  85. And Jesus, in response to them wanting to see him,

  86. made this curious statement on hearing the news.

  87. He said,

  88. The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

  89. Very truly, I tell you,

  90. unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies,

  91. it remains only a single seed.

  92. But if it dies,

  93. it produces many seeds.

  94. So this hour,

  95. Jesus talks about it as the hour when he will be glorified,

  96. and also hints at it as the hour of his death.

  97. Or at least that's a part of what this hour includes.

  98. So this hour has been looming.

  99. It's been getting closer.

  100. It's the hour in which Jesus will show himself most fully to the world.

  101. It's the hour in which he will be seized and arrested by his opponents.

  102. It's the hour in which he will die.

  103. And in Jesus' words,

  104. it's the hour in which he will be glorified.

  105. Jesus says,

  106. That hour is here.

  107. The time is now.

  108. Right after this prayer,

  109. he will lead his disciples into the Garden of Gethsemane.

  110. And it's there that Jesus' opponents will finally get their hands on him.

  111. And all of it will begin.

  112. But notice what comes to mind for Jesus

  113. as he thinks about his imminent arrest and suffering.

  114. We might expect Jesus to pray something different.

  115. Perhaps the hour has come.

  116. Father, help me endure this suffering.

  117. But no.

  118. He prays instead,

  119. Glorify your Son.

  120. That your Son may glorify you.

  121. Already Jesus is saying something that sounds pretty strange to us.

  122. What is this hour all about?

  123. It's about glory.

  124. It's about glory coming to Jesus.

  125. It's about glory coming to the Father.

  126. And it's not coincidence that this will happen.

  127. This is personal.

  128. This is intentional.

  129. Where does Jesus get this glory from?

  130. He asks for it from the Father.

  131. It's the Father who will glorify the Son.

  132. Where will the Father receive glory in this hour?

  133. Jesus says he will bring it to the Father.

  134. They will in this hour glorify one another.

  135. Now we have to stop and talk about this word glorify

  136. because it's kind of a weird word for us.

  137. It's a biblical term

  138. and it's not one that we just use ordinarily in our language today.

  139. What does it mean?

  140. To glorify means to exalt.

  141. It means to lift up.

  142. It means to honor.

  143. It means to praise.

  144. It means to draw people's attention to something that is worthy.

  145. To put the spotlight on someone or something.

  146. And so Jesus asks his Father to do that for him.

  147. To exalt him.

  148. To magnify his name.

  149. His worth.

  150. To bring attention and praise and honor to him.

  151. It's worth looking back here

  152. and remembering what Jesus said earlier

  153. in John chapter 8 verse 54.

    John 8:54

  154. Earlier Jesus said,

  155. If I glorify myself,

  156. my glory means nothing.

  157. My Father, whom you claim as your God,

  158. is the one who glorifies me.

  159. So Jesus has not been seeking glory from people.

  160. He's not been living just to draw the attention and praise of the crowds.

  161. Rather, his attitude, his prayer,

  162. all through this has been this.

  163. Father, glorify your name.

  164. He's been seeking for his Father's glory.

  165. The glory of his name.

  166. He's been living so as to make much of his Father.

  167. To get others' attention on to the Father.

  168. To get others to repent and turn back to the Father.

  169. All the teachings.

  170. It's been,

  171. What is the Father like?

  172. Talking about his grace and his love and his compassion.

  173. His generosity.

  174. His eagerness to answer prayer.

  175. All through Jesus' ministry,

  176. he's been seeking praise and honor and glory

  177. for his Father's name.

  178. Yet Jesus, the Son,

  179. is worthy of praise and honor and glory as well.

  180. We heard this back in John chapter 5 verse 22.

    John 5:22

  181. There Jesus said,

  182. The Father has entrusted all judgment to the Son

  183. that all may honor the Son

  184. just as they honor the Father.

  185. So God the Father desires all to honor his Son,

  186. to worship his Son,

  187. to give glory to his Son

  188. just as they worship and honor and praise and give glory to him.

  189. And the Son is worthy of this,

  190. but he doesn't seek it from human beings.

  191. He seeks the glory that he is due from God,

  192. only from God.

  193. And that's what we hear Jesus praying here.

  194. Glorify your Son.

  195. Basically,

  196. Father,

  197. bring glory to my name.

  198. This is a prayer that is only fitting for Jesus to pray

  199. because of who he is.

  200. Bring glory to me,

  201. says Jesus.

  202. But notice what follows.

  203. So that I may bring glory to you.

  204. There's a mysterious relationship here.

  205. In the same breath as Jesus asks for glory,

  206. he prays for it with a reason.

  207. So that I may glorify you.

  208. How can I say this?

  209. At the root,

  210. at the base of Jesus' desire for his own glory,

  211. at the bottom of this request,

  212. it's not self-seeking.

  213. It's this desire

  214. to bring glory

  215. to his Father's name,

  216. to highlight the worthiness of the Father.

  217. There's a mysterious relationship here

  218. between Father and Son.

  219. Again, we see it.

  220. There's a flow of love

  221. from one to the other.

  222. There's also this desire to exalt,

  223. to lift up,

  224. to magnify

  225. one to the other.

  226. We barely understand what's going on here

  227. between Jesus and the Father.

  228. And already,

  229. Jesus is moving on

  230. to say something else.

  231. Verse 2.

  232. Glorify your Son

  233. that your Son may glorify you.

  234. For you granted him authority

  235. over all people

  236. that he might give eternal life

  237. to all those you have given him.

  238. Have you ever found yourself

  239. just listening in

  240. on someone else's conversation

  241. and feeling like

  242. they know a lot

  243. about what they're talking about,

  244. but you have no idea

  245. what they're talking about?

  246. That's kind of how I feel

  247. when I first hear these words.

  248. It's like I'm on the outside here.

  249. There is this concern,

  250. this plan,

  251. this purpose

  252. that Father and Son know about,

  253. that they're talking to each other about.

  254. And what is it?

  255. It seems like Jesus

  256. just brings it up again,

  257. like this is an ongoing conversation

  258. they've been having.

  259. And somehow,

  260. this statement's all related

  261. to Jesus' request.

  262. glorify your Son

  263. that your Son may glorify you

  264. for just as you gave to him authority.

  265. And Jesus goes on

  266. and says the whole thing.

  267. How does this all fit together?

  268. I'll be honest.

  269. I don't know the connection here.

  270. I don't understand the relationship here

  271. between these two statements.

  272. I could probably meditate on this

  273. for a good long while,

  274. years maybe.

  275. Maybe after reading through my Bible

  276. another three, four, five times,

  277. some of it will come clearer.

  278. But what can we understand here

  279. in verse two?

  280. Well, Jesus does make a statement.

  281. He says to his Father,

  282. you granted,

  283. or literally you gave

  284. him, the Son,

  285. authority over all people

  286. that he might give eternal life

  287. to all those

  288. you have given him.

  289. We'll just stop there

  290. with that first piece.

  291. You granted,

  292. you gave the Son authority

  293. over all people,

  294. literally over all flesh.

  295. Why?

  296. For a specific reason.

  297. So that he, the Son,

  298. might give eternal life

  299. to them.

  300. We'll talk about who them is

  301. in a moment.

  302. The purpose of the authority

  303. that has been given to Jesus

  304. is for him to use it

  305. to give eternal life

  306. to people.

  307. And again,

  308. we're kind of

  309. swimming up to here,

  310. aren't we?

  311. We might have assumed,

  312. well, Jesus is God.

  313. He's the Word

  314. who was with God

  315. and was God

  316. in the beginning,

  317. before anything

  318. has been made.

  319. There he was.

  320. We might assume that Jesus

  321. always had authority

  322. over all flesh.

  323. Look back at what it says

  324. in John 1, verse 3.

    John 1:3

  325. It says,

  326. Through him,

  327. the Word,

  328. that's the one that became flesh,

  329. it's Jesus,

  330. through him,

  331. all things were made.

  332. Without him,

  333. nothing was made

  334. that has been made.

  335. And so we might assume

  336. that since Jesus

  337. had his hand

  338. in making everything

  339. that was made,

  340. including all flesh,

  341. all people,

  342. we might assume

  343. that he has always

  344. had authority

  345. over all flesh,

  346. over all people.

  347. But now,

  348. Jesus is telling us

  349. that the authority

  350. he now has

  351. over all people

  352. has been given to him

  353. by his Father.

  354. What happened?

  355. Did he lose it

  356. when he took on human flesh

  357. and became one of us?

  358. Or is it only

  359. with regard to his humanity

  360. that he must be granted,

  361. given this authority,

  362. since no human being

  363. has ever had that authority?

  364. If you're new

  365. or visiting with us

  366. this morning,

  367. don't worry.

  368. Not every sermon

  369. is like this.

  370. And if this sounds

  371. rather confusing,

  372. it's confusing

  373. even for some of us

  374. who have been Christians

  375. for decades.

  376. I'm going to bet

  377. that the disciples

  378. listening to this prayer

  379. were wondering,

  380. what are you talking

  381. about, Jesus?

  382. But we're pressing in

  383. to understand

  384. what we can

  385. of the depths

  386. of who Jesus is

  387. and of this relationship

  388. between Jesus

  389. and his Father.

  390. These two persons

  391. who together

  392. with the Spirit

  393. make up one God.

  394. It is mysterious.

  395. It is confusing.

  396. But let's not just

  397. throw in the towel

  398. and wait for heaven.

  399. Let's learn everything

  400. that we can about God

  401. through the words

  402. that Jesus has given us here.

  403. This idea

  404. that authority

  405. is given to the Son

  406. shows up in more places

  407. than just this.

  408. We heard about it

  409. back in John 5,

    John 5:25

  410. verse 25.

  411. Jesus said,

  412. at that time,

  413. very truly I tell you,

  414. a time is coming

  415. and has now come

  416. when the dead

  417. will hear the voice

  418. of the Son of God

  419. and those who hear

  420. will live.

  421. For as the Father

  422. has life in himself,

  423. so he has granted

  424. the Son also

  425. to have life

  426. in himself.

  427. And he has given him

  428. authority

  429. to judge

  430. because he is

  431. the Son of Man.

  432. These words of Jesus

  433. in John 5

  434. blow my mind

  435. every time I read them.

  436. I scratch my head

  437. over them.

  438. Jesus just said

  439. that it has been

  440. granted to him.

  441. It was given to him

  442. to have life

  443. in himself.

  444. There's a mysterious

  445. transaction going on here

  446. between Father and Son.

  447. And again,

  448. we all just kind of assume,

  449. don't we,

  450. that Jesus,

  451. because he's God,

  452. he already has

  453. life in himself.

  454. That's what John

    John 1:4

  455. chapter 1 verse 4 says.

  456. It says,

  457. in him was life.

  458. But somehow,

  459. in some mysterious way,

  460. it is granted

  461. to the Son

  462. to have life

  463. in himself

  464. before he then

  465. turns to speak,

  466. granting life

  467. to the dead

  468. who will hear

  469. his voice.

  470. And again here

  471. in verse 27,

  472. Jesus says

  473. that the Father

  474. has given him

  475. authority

  476. authority to judge.

  477. Didn't he already

  478. have that authority?

  479. Well, apparently,

  480. it seems that

  481. in some sense,

  482. he did not.

  483. We hear this

  484. in the Great Commission.

  485. A verse we're all

  486. familiar with.

  487. Matthew 28,

    Matthew 28:18

  488. verse 18.

  489. All authority

  490. in heaven and on earth

  491. has been given to me,

  492. said Jesus.

  493. Therefore,

  494. go and make disciples.

  495. Here again,

  496. we see that Jesus

  497. has all authority

  498. in heaven and on earth,

  499. but we notice

  500. his words.

  501. It was given

  502. to him

  503. by his Father.

  504. So at some point,

  505. if we're honest

  506. with the words of Jesus,

  507. we have to acknowledge

  508. that there's some

  509. sense

  510. or some time

  511. in which he did not

  512. have

  513. all authority

  514. in heaven and on earth.

  515. It was given.

  516. There was some time

  517. or some sense

  518. in which he did not

  519. have the authority

  520. to judge.

  521. There was some time

  522. or some sense

  523. in which he did not

  524. have the authority

  525. to give eternal life

  526. to people.

  527. That's what Jesus

  528. is implying here

  529. in this prayer

  530. in John 17.

  531. How could this be

  532. that this Jesus,

  533. who is God,

  534. had to be given

  535. authority

  536. in order to give

  537. eternal life?

  538. Well, this is my best guess

  539. as to how and why.

  540. Let me say it

  541. right up front,

  542. clearly.

  543. Jesus is no less divine

  544. than we have believed.

  545. He is truly

  546. and fully God.

  547. And at the same time,

  548. Jesus is perhaps

  549. much more human

  550. than we imagined.

  551. When it comes

  552. to Jesus' humanness,

  553. that part of him

  554. had a beginning.

  555. I'll say that again.

  556. I'll give you some time

  557. to run it through

  558. the heresy checker.

  559. The human part

  560. of Jesus

  561. had a beginning.

  562. There was a time

  563. when the word

  564. had not yet

  565. become flesh.

  566. But something

  567. awesome

  568. and wonderful

  569. happened

  570. in that moment

  571. when Jesus

  572. was conceived

  573. in his mother's womb

  574. by the power

  575. of God's Holy Spirit.

  576. An eternal being

  577. was mingled

  578. with a new

  579. human life.

  580. So deeply,

  581. so mysteriously

  582. united

  583. that we can barely

  584. come to grips

  585. with just who it is

  586. staring back at us.

  587. God,

  588. yes.

  589. And at the same time,

  590. a new man,

  591. a new human being,

  592. and not an old one.

  593. A new human being

  594. was Jesus,

  595. and with regard

  596. to his humanity,

  597. he had no special authority.

  598. He wasn't born

  599. into special privilege

  600. or authority

  601. of any kind.

  602. With regard

  603. to his humanity,

  604. he had not life

  605. in himself.

  606. With regard

  607. to his humanity,

  608. he had no authority

  609. to judge the world

  610. or to call the dead

  611. out of their graves,

  612. giving them

  613. eternal life.

  614. And so this authority

  615. had to be given

  616. to Jesus

  617. by his Father.

  618. Now we might wonder

  619. at what point

  620. in the story

  621. does Jesus receive it?

  622. I don't know.

  623. Seems for sure

  624. that he had it

  625. at the Great Commission.

  626. even here,

  627. he speaks of it

  628. in the past tense.

  629. You granted him

  630. past tense,

  631. authority.

  632. Even in John chapter 5,

    John 5 chapter mention

  633. it's in the past tense.

  634. It seems he had it then.

  635. We could speculate.

  636. Was it at his baptism?

  637. Was it at his birth?

  638. Was it at conception?

  639. We don't know.

  640. Whenever it was,

  641. Jesus knows

  642. that at some point

  643. or in some sense,

  644. he received authority

  645. from God

  646. to do that

  647. which according

  648. to his human nature

  649. he could not

  650. otherwise do.

  651. He received authority

  652. from the Father

  653. to give eternal life

  654. to people.

  655. How insane

  656. this must sound

  657. to an unbelieving world.

  658. Here's a man

  659. who prays

  660. to an unseen God

  661. in heaven

  662. and acknowledges

  663. in his prayer

  664. that God

  665. has given him

  666. authority

  667. over all flesh

  668. to give eternal life

  669. to people.

  670. This is why people

  671. have come to surmise

  672. that Jesus

  673. was either a liar

  674. or a lunatic

  675. or the Lord

  676. that he claimed to be.

  677. This is a wild

  678. and lofty claim.

  679. And amazingly,

  680. Jesus doesn't even seem

  681. to care about

  682. who's listening.

  683. It's as if he's

  684. simply talking

  685. with God the Father

  686. the way he always does.

  687. He seems to have

  688. this absolute confidence

  689. in just who he is

  690. and this amazing

  691. understanding

  692. of the kind of authority

  693. that he possesses

  694. and where

  695. and whom

  696. he got it from.

  697. He's claiming

  698. to have authority

  699. from God

  700. to give eternal life

  701. to people.

  702. Think about that.

  703. He's claiming

  704. to be able

  705. to give

  706. life that lasts forever

  707. to people

  708. who ordinarily die.

  709. Do you hear this?

  710. But then

  711. who are these people

  712. that Jesus

  713. gives eternal life to?

  714. Let's finish off

  715. the verse here.

  716. Jesus says,

  717. You granted him

  718. authority over all people

  719. that he might give

  720. eternal life

  721. to all those

  722. you have given him.

  723. That's interesting.

  724. There's another dimension

  725. to all this.

  726. Another way

  727. in which the Father

  728. and the Son

  729. are relating

  730. to each other

  731. in all this.

  732. Jesus says,

  733. It's the Father

  734. who is giving people

  735. to his Son.

  736. Even though it's all flesh,

  737. all people

  738. that Jesus

  739. has authority over,

  740. it's for the purpose

  741. of giving eternal life

  742. to those

  743. that the Father

  744. has given

  745. to him

  746. that he has

  747. this authority.

  748. imagine for a moment

  749. that you're one

  750. of the disciples

  751. just sitting there

  752. listening to this

  753. prayer of Jesus.

  754. And now Jesus

  755. is referring to you

  756. as someone

  757. who has been

  758. given

  759. to Jesus

  760. by the Father.

  761. I've said this before

  762. in this series.

  763. There's just something

  764. much bigger,

  765. much greater

  766. going on here

  767. than just some guys

  768. that just all of a sudden

  769. figured it out

  770. for themselves

  771. and discovered,

  772. Oh, look,

  773. this is the Messiah.

  774. Here he is.

  775. Actually,

  776. according to Jesus,

  777. there's an eternal God

  778. who is both

  779. Father and Son.

  780. The Son is walking

  781. around here

  782. in human flesh

  783. as one of us

  784. and Jesus says

  785. that these guys,

  786. these followers

  787. of his

  788. are the gift

  789. of his Father

  790. to him.

  791. It's like there's

  792. a higher level story

  793. going on here

  794. and we're not

  795. the main actors.

  796. We're the present

  797. being given

  798. from one main actor

  799. to the other.

  800. And Jesus has said

  801. things like this before.

  802. John chapter 6,

    John 6:37

  803. verse 37,

  804. All those

  805. the Father gives me

  806. will come to me.

  807. Again,

  808. in verse 39

  809. of the same chapter,

  810. And this is the will

  811. of him who sent me

  812. that I shall lose

  813. none of all those

  814. he has given me,

  815. but raised them up

  816. at the last day.

  817. This is the higher reality.

  818. We hear about Jesus,

  819. we repent,

  820. we believe in him,

  821. but above all that

  822. and beneath all that,

  823. God is at work

  824. to give people

  825. to his Son.

  826. And Jesus knows that.

  827. That's what's in his mind

  828. as these men

  829. are right here with him

  830. listening to his prayer.

  831. Father,

  832. Father,

  833. you have given them

  834. to me.

  835. And I have authority

  836. to give them

  837. eternal life.

  838. Let's move on

  839. to verse 3.

  840. This is one of my

  841. favorite sayings

  842. of Jesus

  843. in the whole Bible.

  844. Jesus says,

  845. Now this is

  846. eternal life,

  847. that they know

  848. you,

  849. the only true God,

  850. and Jesus Christ,

  851. whom you have sent.

  852. Another strange,

  853. full,

  854. wonderful saying

  855. of Jesus.

  856. It's as though

  857. Jesus here

  858. defines eternal life.

  859. He has authority

  860. to give eternal life

  861. to all those

  862. who have been given

  863. to him,

  864. but now it's like

  865. he steps aside

  866. for a moment

  867. and says,

  868. and this is what

  869. it's all about,

  870. this eternal life.

  871. It's about them

  872. knowing you,

  873. the only true God.

  874. It's about them

  875. knowing me,

  876. Jesus Christ.

  877. It's about this

  878. everlasting relationship

  879. between them

  880. and you

  881. and them

  882. and me.

  883. Verse 4.

  884. Jesus prays,

  885. I have brought you

  886. glory on earth

  887. by finishing the work

  888. you gave me to do.

  889. This verse is loaded too.

  890. I could preach a whole message

  891. just on this one statement,

  892. but I won't do it.

  893. It's the son's desire,

  894. as we saw in verse 2,

  895. to bring glory

  896. to the father

  897. so that I might glorify you,

  898. said Jesus.

  899. That's what Jesus wants to do.

  900. He wants to magnify

  901. the worth

  902. of his father,

  903. to put the spotlight

  904. on his glory.

  905. And Jesus says,

  906. I have been doing that

  907. right up until now.

  908. How?

  909. By finishing the work

  910. you have given me to do.

  911. This has been the aim

  912. of Jesus

  913. all along

  914. in everything he does,

  915. in all the teaching,

  916. in all the discipling,

  917. in all the miracles.

  918. But now Jesus

  919. is so aware

  920. that the pinnacle

  921. of his work

  922. is about to be accomplished.

  923. The work that he must do

  924. to save

  925. those who have been

  926. given to him.

  927. This is the difficult work

  928. of going to the cross

  929. and dying for them.

  930. It's as though

  931. Jesus is saying,

  932. I've finished

  933. all the work

  934. that you've given me

  935. to do

  936. up till this point,

  937. bringing glory

  938. to your name,

  939. Father.

  940. But now what is before me

  941. is that final stretch,

  942. this hour

  943. in which I must suffer

  944. and die

  945. for the sins

  946. of the world.

  947. Let these words

  948. be firmly fixed

  949. in your mind

  950. it's no coincidence

  951. that this is

  952. the gospel account

  953. in which we hear

  954. Jesus say

  955. from the cross,

  956. it is finished.

  957. Mission accomplished.

  958. It is finished

  959. is not just

  960. the cry of a man

  961. who has suffered

  962. a long while

  963. to save sinners.

  964. It's the cry of a man

  965. who has been at work

  966. for decades

  967. to bring glory

  968. to his Father

  969. for years

  970. up until this point

  971. here

  972. and finally

  973. culminating

  974. at the cross.

  975. Verse 5.

  976. Last one.

  977. Jesus says,

  978. And now, Father,

  979. glorify me

  980. in your presence

  981. with the glory

  982. I had with you

  983. before the world

  984. began.

  985. I could preach

  986. three sermons

  987. on this verse.

  988. I love this verse.

  989. Jesus asked

  990. the Father

  991. to give him

  992. the glory

  993. that he had

  994. with the Father

  995. before the world

  996. began.

  997. Like,

  998. do you hear this?

  999. Who prays like this?

  1000. Who says things

  1001. like this?

  1002. This verse

  1003. highlights both

  1004. the humanity

  1005. and the deity

  1006. of Jesus.

  1007. Jesus.

  1008. Jesus has awareness

  1009. of being

  1010. with the Father

  1011. before the world

  1012. was.

  1013. He knows

  1014. about the glory

  1015. that he had

  1016. with the Father

  1017. before the world

  1018. existed.

  1019. This reveals

  1020. Jesus'

  1021. divine nature

  1022. that he is

  1023. truly God.

  1024. While his humanity

  1025. had a beginning,

  1026. his divinity,

  1027. his godness

  1028. did not.

  1029. He longs

  1030. out of that

  1031. divine nature

  1032. with those

  1033. eternal memories

  1034. to be lifted

  1035. up to the

  1036. glorious kind

  1037. of existence

  1038. that he enjoyed

  1039. with the Father

  1040. before the world

  1041. even began

  1042. because Jesus

  1043. is God.

  1044. Only God

  1045. could speak

  1046. this way.

  1047. humanity.

  1048. But now

  1049. this verse,

  1050. these words

  1051. of Jesus

  1052. also highlight

  1053. his humanity.

  1054. This is perhaps

  1055. one of the verses

  1056. we point to

  1057. most often

  1058. as we try

  1059. to understand

  1060. this mystery

  1061. that the word

  1062. became flesh

  1063. and lived

  1064. among us.

  1065. We wonder

  1066. what happened

  1067. when Jesus,

  1068. though he was

  1069. in very nature,

  1070. very form God,

  1071. what happened

  1072. when he emptied

  1073. himself or

  1074. made himself

  1075. nothing

  1076. by taking

  1077. the form

  1078. of a servant

  1079. and becoming

  1080. one of us,

  1081. a human being.

  1082. What changed

  1083. for him

  1084. when he came

  1085. down from

  1086. heaven to earth?

  1087. These words

  1088. of Jesus

  1089. give us

  1090. something of

  1091. an answer.

  1092. He lost

  1093. something

  1094. of his glory.

  1095. Not all of it.

  1096. As we see

  1097. in John 2,

    John 2:11

  1098. verse 11,

  1099. after he did

  1100. his first miracle,

  1101. the disciples

  1102. said that it

  1103. was one of the

  1104. signs through

  1105. which he revealed

  1106. his glory.

  1107. So he still

  1108. possessed

  1109. some of his

  1110. glory,

  1111. but it's as

  1112. though much

  1113. of his glory

  1114. was veiled.

  1115. It was hidden

  1116. by his

  1117. humanity.

  1118. Some would

  1119. say that he

  1120. laid aside

  1121. his glory

  1122. when he

  1123. became a man.

  1124. And yet even

  1125. here it's

  1126. difficult to

  1127. describe,

  1128. well what

  1129. exactly did

  1130. he lay

  1131. aside?

  1132. We could

  1133. speak of

  1134. position

  1135. and privilege

  1136. for sure.

  1137. We could

  1138. probably speak

  1139. of authority

  1140. as well as

  1141. we've just

  1142. heard since

  1143. Jesus acknowledged

  1144. he had to

  1145. be given

  1146. authority

  1147. from the

  1148. Father.

  1149. Again,

  1150. this is

  1151. mysterious.

  1152. This is

  1153. beyond what

  1154. we can

  1155. fathom.

  1156. But here's

  1157. Jesus who

  1158. knew glory,

  1159. who had

  1160. the glory

  1161. with the

  1162. Father in

  1163. his presence.

  1164. Here he is

  1165. now praying

  1166. to have it

  1167. back again,

  1168. longing for

  1169. it.

  1170. This is how

  1171. far down

  1172. Jesus has

  1173. come to

  1174. rescue us.

  1175. he has

  1176. stooped

  1177. down to

  1178. becoming

  1179. one of

  1180. his

  1181. creatures.

  1182. He

  1183. exchanged

  1184. the

  1185. heights

  1186. of

  1187. heaven

  1188. for the

  1189. lowly

  1190. dusty

  1191. streets

  1192. of

  1193. Israel.

  1194. And we

  1195. could go

  1196. on.

  1197. I love

  1198. this verse

  1199. but let's

  1200. draw this

  1201. to a

  1202. close.

  1203. Four

  1204. truths that

  1205. come out of

  1206. Jesus'

  1207. prayer,

  1208. these five

  1209. verses.

  1210. What do we

  1211. learn about

  1212. God from

  1213. this prayer?

  1214. Well,

  1215. first we

  1216. see that

  1217. Jesus desires

  1218. to glorify

  1219. his Father

  1220. by finishing

  1221. the work

  1222. that God

  1223. gave him

  1224. to do.

  1225. Next,

  1226. we see that

  1227. Jesus desires

  1228. to be

  1229. restored to

  1230. the glory

  1231. he had

  1232. with his

  1233. Father

  1234. before the

  1235. world began.

  1236. And both

  1237. of these,

  1238. in both of

  1239. these,

  1240. and through

  1241. both of

  1242. these,

  1243. we see

  1244. that Jesus

  1245. is truly

  1246. God and

  1247. that Jesus

  1248. is truly

  1249. human,

  1250. truly one

  1251. of us.

  1252. So let's

  1253. just draw

  1254. some quick

  1255. lines of

  1256. application

  1257. here.

  1258. If you're

  1259. not a

  1260. believer in

  1261. Jesus today,

  1262. do you hear

  1263. what Jesus

  1264. is saying?

  1265. He has

  1266. authority

  1267. to give

  1268. eternal

  1269. life to

  1270. people.

  1271. We all

  1272. know that

  1273. death is

  1274. coming for

  1275. each one

  1276. of us

  1277. at some

  1278. point.

  1279. Yet here's

  1280. the one

  1281. who claims

  1282. to be able

  1283. to undo

  1284. that,

  1285. to help

  1286. you beat

  1287. that and

  1288. live forever,

  1289. to raise

  1290. you up at

  1291. the last

  1292. day.

  1293. And this

  1294. is, he

  1295. says, is a

  1296. free gift.

  1297. It's a gift

  1298. of God's

  1299. grace for

  1300. all who

  1301. believe in

  1302. him.

  1303. Have you

  1304. put your

  1305. faith, have

  1306. you put your

  1307. trust in

  1308. Jesus?

  1309. For the

  1310. rest of

  1311. us, those

  1312. who already

  1313. believe, I

  1314. want to take

  1315. us down a

  1316. different line.

  1317. If Jesus

  1318. desires to

  1319. glorify his

  1320. father so

  1321. deeply and

  1322. has lived to

  1323. do so, so

  1324. fully, what

  1325. should we do?

  1326. If the

  1327. father's

  1328. desire is to

  1329. glorify his

  1330. son and

  1331. works to

  1332. do that, to

  1333. put the

  1334. spotlight on

  1335. him, what

  1336. should we

  1337. do?

  1338. How should

  1339. we live?

  1340. Let me put

  1341. it this way,

  1342. what's the

  1343. purpose of

  1344. life?

  1345. The

  1346. Westminster

  1347. Shorter

  1348. Catechism

  1349. says it

  1350. this way,

  1351. the chief

  1352. end of

  1353. man, the

  1354. highest purpose

  1355. of man is

  1356. to glorify

  1357. God and

  1358. to enjoy

  1359. him forever.

  1360. Jesus

  1361. isn't just

  1362. setting us

  1363. an example

  1364. here of

  1365. how we

  1366. should pray

  1367. on Sunday

  1368. mornings.

  1369. He's setting

  1370. us an

  1371. example here

  1372. of how we

  1373. should live

  1374. our entire

  1375. lives from

  1376. start to

  1377. finish.

  1378. What our

  1379. aim should

  1380. be.

  1381. Our worship

  1382. should be more

  1383. than just four

  1384. or five songs

  1385. that we sing

  1386. on Sunday

  1387. morning.

  1388. It should

  1389. be the

  1390. offering of

  1391. our entire

  1392. lives to

  1393. this great

  1394. and glorious

  1395. God and

  1396. his son,

  1397. Jesus Christ.

  1398. And so if

  1399. you're a believer,

  1400. I want to

  1401. encourage you to

  1402. ask yourself

  1403. this question.

  1404. Is that the

  1405. main focus of

  1406. my life?

  1407. To bring

  1408. glory to

  1409. this God

  1410. and to

  1411. his son,

  1412. Jesus?

  1413. To know

  1414. him.

  1415. Is that my

  1416. main priority?

  1417. the thing

  1418. for which

  1419. all other

  1420. things in

  1421. life must

  1422. make way

  1423. and submit

  1424. to.

  1425. Have I got

  1426. my priorities

  1427. straight?

  1428. The good

  1429. news of the

  1430. gospel is

  1431. that Jesus

  1432. had his

  1433. priorities

  1434. straight.

  1435. And he

  1436. was willing

  1437. to lay

  1438. down his

  1439. life in

  1440. order to

  1441. finish the

  1442. work that

  1443. God gave

  1444. him to

  1445. do.

  1446. He glorified

  1447. the Father

  1448. completely

  1449. with his

  1450. whole earthly

  1451. life and

  1452. in so doing

  1453. he saved

  1454. the rest

  1455. of us who

  1456. have failed

  1457. to do

  1458. so.

  1459. And amazingly

  1460. Jesus offers

  1461. us this

  1462. gift, this

  1463. eternal life

  1464. as a gift

  1465. freely of

  1466. God's grace.

  1467. And so let's

  1468. not shrink

  1469. back.

  1470. Let's offer

  1471. ourselves

  1472. completely to

  1473. him.

  1474. To bring

  1475. glory to

  1476. him.

  1477. Let's live

  1478. as Paul

  1479. says, as

  1480. living sacrifices

  1481. holy and

  1482. pleasing to

  1483. God.

  1484. God

  1485. for this

  1486. is our

  1487. true and

  1488. proper

  1489. worship.

  1490. Let's

  1491. pray.

  1492. Father in

  1493. heaven, thank

  1494. you so much

  1495. that you

  1496. have given

  1497. us a

  1498. glimpse of

  1499. that sweet

  1500. relationship you

  1501. have with

  1502. your son.

  1503. And I

  1504. pray that it

  1505. would change

  1506. us.

  1507. I pray that

  1508. it would

  1509. transform our

  1510. hearts.

  1511. That we

  1512. would realize

  1513. that this

  1514. story that

  1515. we're caught

  1516. up into is

  1517. so much

  1518. bigger than

  1519. just some

  1520. of the

  1521. things that

  1522. we often

  1523. get distracted

  1524. with in

  1525. our lives.

  1526. Speak to

  1527. our hearts

  1528. again about

  1529. eternity,

  1530. about your

  1531. glory.

  1532. Reveal

  1533. yourself to

  1534. us and

  1535. lead us, we

  1536. pray, in

  1537. bringing glory

  1538. to your name.

  1539. Thank you for

  1540. Jesus.

  1541. Amen.
