  1. You can open your Bible, if you have it with you, to John chapter 17.

    John 17 chapter mention

  2. We're continuing where we left off last Sunday.

  3. We're in the midst of Jesus' prayer.

  4. It's the night of Jesus' betrayal.

  5. After spending quite a lot of time teaching and comforting and warning his disciples,

  6. Jesus began to just pray out loud in front of them.

  7. Last Sunday, we listened to the first words of Jesus in this prayer.

  8. He expressed his longing to be restored to the glory that he had with God the Father before the world began.

  9. He told the Father that he had completed the work that the Father had given him to do up until this point.

  10. Jesus has more to say in this prayer to the Father.

  11. This morning, we're going to hear more about the work that Jesus has finished.

  12. We'll hear what else is on Jesus' heart.

  13. And we'll hear this sort of building up to one big request that Jesus has.

  14. And we'll see more of this unique relationship that Jesus has with God the Father.

  15. So we're at John chapter 17, verse 6.

    John 17:6

  16. And as I was studying this earlier this week, I felt like I was trying to come up with a metaphor for this.

  17. But I felt like I was kind of like Indiana Jones.

  18. And I'd stumbled into this treasure room.

  19. And man, there's so much in here that's wonderful.

  20. And then the more I got into it and was looking at the different themes and the things that come up in here,

  21. I thought, man, this isn't just a single room.

  22. This is like the foyer into all kinds of other treasure rooms.

  23. I'll give you an example.

  24. This is not the main theme or the main point of Jesus' prayer.

  25. But three times in these seven verses that we're looking at this morning,

  26. Jesus refers to the disciples as those whom you gave me.

  27. We see this in verse 6 twice.

  28. And then in verse 9 once more.

  29. I pray for them, for those you have given me.

  30. And I mentioned this idea last week, but here again, there's quite a lot of emphasis on this reality.

  31. This thing that was probably unperceived by Jesus' disciples.

  32. About how each one of them has been given to the Father.

  33. Given by the Father to Jesus.

  34. And as we see here in verse 6, there's even a sense in which they belonged to God before they were given to Jesus.

  35. This is one of those smaller treasure rooms.

  36. If you belong to Christ Jesus, there's more to your story than just one day I heard and believed and became a follower of Jesus.

  37. That's what happened from your perspective.

  38. But from God's perspective, you were His.

  39. You were chosen.

  40. You were loved.

  41. Before you were even born.

  42. He was sovereignly at work on you.

  43. And in you.

  44. And around you.

  45. You were preparing for that day on which He would give you to His Son.

  46. It's precious.

  47. It's wonderful.

  48. It's just one of the many things that we find in Jesus' prayer here.

  49. And so even though we're not going to touch on all these things,

  50. I want to encourage you to take time to meditate and reflect deeply on these words of Jesus on your own.

  51. So let's read these seven verses here.

  52. Jesus praying to the Father said,

  53. I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world.

  54. They were yours.

  55. You gave them to me and they have obeyed your word.

  56. Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you.

  57. For I gave them the words you gave me.

  58. And they accepted them.

  59. They knew with certainty that I came from you.

  60. And they believed that you sent me.

  61. I pray for them.

  62. I'm not praying for the world.

  63. But for those you have given me.

  64. For they are yours.

  65. All I have is yours.

  66. And all you have is mine.

  67. And glory has come to me through them.

  68. I will remain in the world no longer.

  69. But they are still in the world.

  70. And I am coming to you.

  71. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name.

  72. The name you gave me.

  73. So that they may be one.

  74. As we are one.

  75. While I was with them, I protected them.

  76. And kept them safe by that name you gave me.

  77. None has been lost.

  78. Except the one doomed to destruction.

  79. So that scripture would be fulfilled.

  80. There are three sections or movements that we might see in this part of

  81. Jesus' prayer.

  82. The first one is in verses 6 to 8.

  83. Jesus talks to the Father about the work that he has finished.

  84. And the result of that work.

  85. Then in verses 9 to 11.

  86. Jesus prepares to make his request of the Father.

  87. And he begins to express some of the reasons for this request.

  88. What's on his heart.

  89. And then in verses 11 and 12.

  90. Jesus makes the request.

  91. And expresses more about what he longs to see the Father do.

  92. So let's begin with this first movement in verses 6 to 8.

  93. These words of Jesus seem to flow right out of Jesus' previous statement.

  94. Back up in verse 4.

  95. Jesus prayed,

  96. I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do.

  97. And this section,

  98. verse 6 of chapter 17,

  99. is marked by Jesus telling the Father what he has done.

  100. The main verbs here are all first person and past tense.

  101. I have revealed.

  102. First person and past tense.

  103. Down in verse 8.

  104. I gave them the words you gave me.

  105. It's all about the work that Jesus has been doing.

  106. And that is now past.

  107. It's now done.

  108. It's now complete.

  109. And what is that work?

  110. In verse 6,

  111. Jesus says,

  112. I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world.

  113. This has been the work of Jesus.

  114. To reveal God, the Father, to his disciples.

  115. To show them who God is.

  116. What he's really like.

  117. This is one of the primary purposes and missions of Jesus.

  118. To make the Father known to us.

  119. If we look all the way back to John's introduction to the gospel.

  120. Chapter 1, verse 18.

  121. What did John say at the beginning of this account?

  122. He said,

  123. No one has ever seen God,

  124. but the one and only Son,

  125. who is himself God,

  126. and is in closest relationship with the Father.

  127. He has made him known.

  128. That's what Jesus came to do.

  129. It's not as though we knew nothing about God before Jesus came.

  130. I find the author of Hebrews very helpful here.

  131. This is what he says in his writing.

  132. The letter to the Hebrews,

    Hebrews 1:1–3

  133. chapter 1, verse 1 to 3.

  134. He writes,

  135. In the past,

  136. God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets.

  137. The Son, he says,

  138. is the radiance of God's glory.

  139. And the exact representation of his being.

  140. So, Jesus brings a much fuller,

  141. a much greater revelation of the Father to us.

  142. He represents the Father exactly

  143. beyond what the prophets of old could do.

  144. They were spokesmen for God in the past,

  145. but Jesus is the exact representation of God's being

  146. here among us in human flesh and blood.

  147. So, Jesus says,

  148. I have done what you gave me to do.

  149. I have revealed your name to them.

  150. I have revealed you to them.

  151. Well, there's a second work that Jesus has just finished doing,

  152. and it's related.

  153. Verse 8,

  154. Jesus says,

  155. I gave them the words you gave me.

  156. I gave them the words you gave me.

  157. This has also been one of the primary purposes

  158. or missions of Jesus,

  159. to give words,

  160. to speak to his disciples.

  161. And notice the source of these words.

  162. Jesus has been speaking to his disciples

  163. the very words that God has given him to say.

  164. We've talked about this before,

  165. but it's worth saying again.

  166. Jesus doesn't teach his own material.

  167. In everything he says,

  168. he functions like a prophet,

  169. relaying the very words that God has to say to people.

  170. We saw this back in John 7, verse 16,

    John 7:16

  171. when Jesus answered,

  172. My teaching is not my own.

  173. It comes from the one who sent me.

  174. We heard it again in John 8, verse 28.

    John 8:28

  175. Jesus said,

  176. There, when you have lifted up the Son of Man,

  177. then you will know that I am he,

  178. and that I do nothing on my own,

  179. but speak just what the Father has taught me.

  180. And we heard it again in John 14,

  181. earlier this same evening,

  182. verse 24.

  183. He said,

  184. Anyone who does not love me

  185. will not obey my teaching.

  186. These words you hear are not my own.

  187. They belong to the Father who sent me.

  188. So Jesus now in this prayer

  189. is kind of reporting to the Father.

  190. I've finished the work that you gave me to do.

  191. I've given them your words,

  192. the words that you gave me to say to them.

  193. So we see two types of work

  194. that Jesus has finished doing.

  195. The work of revealing the Father to his disciples,

  196. and the work of giving them the Father's words.

  197. And then we notice throughout this first section

  198. that Jesus kind of reports to the Father

  199. about how the disciples have responded to all this.

  200. I'll just read this whole section again

  201. and emphasize that.

  202. I have revealed you to those

  203. whom you gave me out of the world.

  204. They were yours.

  205. You gave them to me,

  206. and they have obeyed your word.

  207. Now they know that everything you have given me

  208. comes from you.

  209. For I gave them the words you gave me,

  210. and they accepted them.

  211. They knew with certainty that I came from you,

  212. and they believed that you sent me.

  213. So in this conversation between Jesus and the Father,

  214. it's like he's reflecting on the results

  215. of the work that he has been doing,

  216. and the results are very good.

  217. We hear five statements

  218. about how the disciples have responded favorably

  219. favorably to this revealing and teaching work of Jesus.

  220. The first,

  221. they have obeyed your word,

  222. or literally,

  223. they have kept your word.

  224. Verse six,

  225. this is good.

  226. This is what the Father and the Son

  227. have been longing for.

  228. Jesus was sent by the Father into the world

  229. to teach and speak on the Father's behalf,

  230. as we just said,

  231. and the report is good.

  232. These men have been holding fast

  233. to the things that they have been hearing from Jesus.

  234. And let's remember,

  235. it hasn't been easy to hold fast to the words of Jesus.

  236. It's been getting harder and harder and harder

  237. as the story has gone on.

  238. The opposition to Jesus has been mounting,

  239. and yet here they are this night,

  240. on the night of his betrayal,

  241. and they're still holding fast to his words.

  242. The second statement comes in verse seven.

  243. Jesus says,

  244. now they know that everything you have given me

  245. comes from you.

  246. Now this statement

  247. sounds a little strange at first.

  248. Quite literally,

  249. it's,

  250. now they know

  251. that all things,

  252. as many as you have given to me,

  253. are from you.

  254. And Jesus will clarify

  255. some of what he means

  256. in this next verse.

  257. For I gave them the words

  258. you gave me,

  259. and they accepted them.

  260. So some of the everything,

  261. some of the all things

  262. that have been given to Jesus

  263. that they are recognizing

  264. is from God,

  265. are the words

  266. that God has given

  267. to them,

  268. to Jesus,

  269. to give to them.

  270. So Jesus is saying,

  271. now they know

  272. that the words

  273. that you have given me

  274. come from you.

  275. They recognize that.

  276. But as I was thinking about this,

  277. I don't think Jesus says

  278. all things

  279. or everything

  280. without reason.

  281. As we've seen,

  282. the Father has given

  283. more than just words

  284. to Jesus.

  285. He's given him

  286. various kinds of authority.

  287. Authority to judge,

  288. authority to forgive sins,

  289. miracle working power,

  290. supernatural wisdom,

  291. knowledge of the future,

  292. and more.

  293. It's a package deal,

  294. I think,

  295. as Jesus says it here

  296. in verse 7.

  297. Now these disciples of mine,

  298. they know that

  299. all these things

  300. that they've been seeing

  301. come from you.

  302. Again, this is good.

  303. This is success.

  304. This is mission accomplished.

  305. They're seeing Jesus

  306. and the things

  307. he says and does

  308. and they're coming

  309. to the right conclusion

  310. from it.

  311. They're tracing

  312. all these things

  313. back up to the source

  314. as they should.

  315. They recognize

  316. that everything

  317. Jesus does

  318. and says

  319. is from God,

  320. the Father.

  321. The third statement,

  322. Jesus says,

  323. they accepted

  324. the words

  325. you gave me.

  326. This in verse 8.

  327. For I gave them

  328. the words

  329. you gave me

  330. and they accepted them.

  331. The fourth statement

  332. comes also

  333. in verse 8.

  334. They knew

  335. with certainty

  336. that I came

  337. from you.

  338. And the fifth statement

  339. also in verse 8.

  340. And they believed

  341. that you sent me.

  342. all of these things

  343. are a big deal.

  344. The claims of Jesus

  345. are lofty.

  346. The promises of Jesus

  347. are out of this world.

  348. But the disciples

  349. have accepted them.

  350. They've believed.

  351. They know

  352. with certainty

  353. that Jesus

  354. has been sent

  355. from God

  356. in heaven.

  357. I can't help

  358. but think

  359. that Jesus

  360. is full of joy

  361. as he reflects

  362. on this

  363. and tells this

  364. to the Father.

  365. This is what

  366. they've been

  367. working together

  368. toward.

  369. Just like

  370. in the days

  371. of creation

  372. where God

  373. saw all

  374. that he had made

  375. and it was good.

  376. I can't help

  377. but see

  378. the smile

  379. of Jesus

  380. as he reflects

  381. on the past

  382. three years

  383. of difficult work

  384. and says

  385. to his Father

  386. it's done

  387. and it's good.

  388. The result

  389. is good.

  390. They believe

  391. you sent me.

  392. They know it

  393. with certainty

  394. that I came

  395. from you.

  396. They have accepted

  397. the words

  398. you gave me

  399. to give them

  400. and they have

  401. kept those words

  402. and are holding

  403. fast to them.

  404. It's good.

  405. It's very good.

  406. But as we come

  407. to this second

  408. section

  409. it's not over yet.

  410. What's happened

  411. is good.

  412. The work is done

  413. but there is

  414. on the heart

  415. of Jesus

  416. a weight.

  417. A burden.

  418. A loving

  419. concern

  420. for these

  421. followers

  422. of his

  423. because a very

  424. difficult time

  425. is coming.

  426. And so we come

  427. to verse

  428. nine.

  429. Jesus says

  430. I pray

  431. for them.

  432. I pray

  433. for them.

  434. I'm not praying

  435. for the world

  436. but for those

  437. you have given

  438. me.

  439. Quite literally

  440. I

  441. for them

  442. am asking.

  443. Not for the world

  444. am I asking

  445. but for those

  446. you have given

  447. to me.

  448. Jesus has

  449. on his heart

  450. a request

  451. something

  452. to ask

  453. for.

  454. And he doesn't

  455. immediately make

  456. his request.

  457. First he

  458. clarifies

  459. just who

  460. he is asking

  461. this for.

  462. It's not

  463. for the world

  464. he says.

  465. It's not

  466. for every

  467. single person

  468. on earth

  469. that Jesus

  470. asks this

  471. is about

  472. to ask

  473. this.

  474. It's

  475. specifically

  476. he says

  477. for those

  478. you have

  479. given me.

  480. here in the

  481. present context

  482. that's the

  483. disciples of

  484. Jesus.

  485. That's these

  486. eleven men

  487. with him.

  488. But perhaps

  489. also in his

  490. mind are

  491. the other

  492. followers that

  493. he has

  494. that are

  495. not here

  496. with him.

  497. The Marys

  498. and the

  499. Marthas

  500. the Lazaruses.

  501. Jesus

  502. grounds

  503. his request

  504. that he's

  505. about to

  506. make with

  507. some reasons.

  508. He reminds

  509. the father

  510. that these

  511. disciples of

  512. his belong

  513. to him

  514. the father.

  515. They're not

  516. just Jesus

  517. disciples

  518. even though

  519. they have

  520. been given

  521. to him.

  522. At the

  523. same time

  524. they also

  525. belong to

  526. the father

  527. as well.

  528. They're his

  529. people too.

  530. I pray

  531. for them

  532. for they

  533. are yours

  534. says Jesus.

  535. Now I

  536. imagine that

  537. if we were

  538. among the

  539. eleven disciples

  540. with Jesus

  541. listening to

  542. all this

  543. we might be

  544. wondering about

  545. this.

  546. First Jesus

  547. talks about

  548. how we've

  549. been given

  550. to Jesus

  551. by the

  552. father and

  553. so we belong

  554. to Christ

  555. now.

  556. Just as he

  557. said earlier

  558. they were

  559. yours you

  560. gave them

  561. to me.

  562. But now

  563. Jesus says

  564. that we are

  565. still God

  566. the fathers

  567. yours.

  568. So whose

  569. are we?

  570. Well Jesus

  571. next statement

  572. will clarify

  573. this.

  574. We who

  575. believe belong

  576. to both

  577. the father

  578. and the

  579. son.

  580. Jesus makes

  581. the statement

  582. all I have

  583. is yours

  584. father.

  585. And all

  586. you have

  587. is mine.

  588. What a

  589. statement.

  590. all I

  591. have is

  592. yours

  593. says

  594. Jesus.

  595. Yes

  596. you gave

  597. them to

  598. me

  599. but

  600. everything

  601. I

  602. have

  603. is

  604. yours

  605. says

  606. Jesus.

  607. There is

  608. I think

  609. in these

  610. words

  611. an absolute

  612. surrender

  613. an absolute

  614. devotion.

  615. Jesus

  616. keeps

  617. nothing

  618. to

  619. himself

  620. and for

  621. himself

  622. alone.

  623. Everything

  624. I have

  625. is yours

  626. it belongs

  627. to you

  628. father.

  629. father.

  630. He's got

  631. a whole

  632. hearted

  633. devotion

  634. to God

  635. that same

  636. kind of

  637. devotion

  638. that every

  639. one of

  640. us

  641. every human

  642. being

  643. should

  644. have

  645. all of

  646. me

  647. all I

  648. have

  649. belongs

  650. to you

  651. God.

  652. Oh

  653. that we

  654. would all

  655. have

  656. that same

  657. heart

  658. always.

  659. But then

  660. Jesus says

  661. something else

  662. the flip

  663. side

  664. something

  665. that's

  666. quite

  667. surprising

  668. all I

  669. have

  670. is

  671. yours

  672. whoa

  673. but then

  674. all

  675. you

  676. have

  677. is

  678. mine.

  679. Again

  680. Jesus

  681. claims

  682. things

  683. that

  684. nobody

  685. else

  686. claims.

  687. It's

  688. one thing

  689. to belong

  690. completely

  691. to God

  692. it's

  693. another

  694. thing

  695. to say

  696. that all

  697. God

  698. has

  699. belongs

  700. to

  701. you.

  702. This

  703. would be

  704. the height

  705. of

  706. blasphemy

  707. if

  708. Jesus

  709. was merely

  710. a man

  711. but

  712. Jesus

  713. is

  714. more.

  715. He

  716. is

  717. the

  718. divine

  719. son

  720. of

  721. God

  722. sent

  723. from

  724. heaven

  725. who

  726. makes

  727. this

  728. claim.

  729. He

  730. says

  731. to

  732. God

  733. the

  734. father

  735. I

  736. share

  737. completely

  738. in

  739. what

  740. you

  741. have

  742. everything

  743. that

  744. you

  745. have

  746. as

  747. if

  748. it

  749. were

  750. my

  751. own.

  752. Do

  753. you

  754. hear

  755. this?

  756. Let

  757. me

  758. tell

  759. you.

  760. What's

  761. that?

  762. Sure

  763. do.

  764. Let

  765. me

  766. tell

  767. you

  768. if

  769. Jesus

  770. was

  771. just

  772. a

  773. man

  774. making

  775. false

  776. claims

  777. and

  778. if

  779. God

  780. knew

  781. that

  782. in

  783. this

  784. moment

  785. Jesus

  786. was

  787. speaking

  788. blasphemy

  789. God

  790. could

  791. strike

  792. Jesus

  793. dead

  794. on

  795. the

  796. spot

  797. and

  798. make

  799. it

  800. absolutely

  801. clear

  802. to

  803. his

  804. followers

  805. that

  806. Jesus

  807. had

  808. crossed

  809. the

  810. line

  811. with

  812. this

  813. statement.

  814. In

  815. fact

  816. God

  817. did

  818. that.

  819. He

  820. struck

  821. a man

  822. dead

  823. for

  824. accepting

  825. worship

  826. as

  827. though

  828. he

  829. were

  830. God

  831. on

  832. a

  833. particular

  834. occasion.

  835. That

  836. was

  837. Herod

  838. in

  839. Acts

    Acts 12 chapter mention

  840. chapter

  841. 12.

  842. But

  843. no

  844. God

  845. knows

  846. his

  847. own

  848. son

  849. and

  850. there

  851. is

  852. this

  853. mysterious

  854. and

  855. wonderful

  856. relationship

  857. between

  858. father

  859. and

  860. son

  861. such

  862. that

  863. yes

  864. even

  865. this

  866. is

  867. true

  868. all

  869. I

  870. have

  871. is

  872. yours

  873. and

  874. all

  875. you

  876. have

  877. is

  878. mine

  879. says

  880. Jesus.

  881. We

  882. keep

  883. going

  884. forward

  885. verse

  886. 11

  887. Jesus

  888. says

  889. I

  890. will

  891. remain

  892. in

  893. the

  894. world

  895. no

  896. longer

  897. but

  898. they

  899. are

  900. still

  901. in

  902. the

  903. world

  904. and

  905. I

  906. am

  907. coming

  908. to

  909. you

  910. Jesus

  911. is

  912. getting

  913. closer

  914. to

  915. making

  916. his

  917. request

  918. and

  919. again

  920. he

  921. seems

  922. to

  923. explain

  924. the

  925. reason

  926. for

  927. this

  928. request

  929. a little

  930. bit

  931. more

  932. he's

  933. aware

  934. that

  935. these

  936. disciples

  937. of

  938. his

  939. these

  940. ones

  941. who

  942. have

  943. been

  944. given

  945. to

  946. him

  947. entrusted

  948. to

  949. him

  950. by

  951. the

  952. father

  953. they're

  954. going

  955. to

  956. continue

  957. to

  958. remain

  959. in

  960. this

  961. world

  962. with

  963. all

  964. its

  965. troubles

  966. all

  967. its

  968. difficulties

  969. and

  970. Jesus

  971. will

  972. no

  973. longer

  974. be

  975. with

  976. them

  977. because

  978. he's

  979. leaving

  980. I'm

  981. leaving

  982. the world

  983. and coming

  984. to you

  985. father

  986. says

  987. Jesus

  988. but

  989. it's

  990. like

  991. this

  992. reality

  993. weighs

  994. on

  995. his

  996. heart

  997. his

  998. people

  999. are

  1000. not

  1001. coming

  1002. with

  1003. him

  1004. they're

  1005. going

  1006. to

  1007. have

  1008. to

  1009. live

  1010. and

  1011. endure

  1012. all

  1013. that's

  1014. ahead

  1015. without

  1016. him

  1017. right

  1018. there

  1019. by

  1020. their

  1021. side

  1022. like

  1023. he

  1024. has

  1025. been

  1026. for

  1027. these

  1028. past

  1029. three

  1030. years

  1031. and

  1032. so

  1033. Jesus

  1034. finally

  1035. makes

  1036. his

  1037. big

  1038. request

  1039. of the

  1040. father

  1041. he

  1042. asks

  1043. for

  1044. something

  1045. very

  1046. specific

  1047. I

  1048. will

  1049. remain

  1050. in

  1051. the

  1052. world

  1053. no

  1054. longer

  1055. but

  1056. they

  1057. are

  1058. still

  1059. in

  1060. the

  1061. world

  1062. and

  1063. I

  1064. am

  1065. coming

  1066. to

  1067. you

  1068. holy

  1069. father

  1070. protect

  1071. them

  1072. by

  1073. the

  1074. power

  1075. of

  1076. your

  1077. name

  1078. the

  1079. name

  1080. you

  1081. gave

  1082. me

  1083. so

  1084. that

  1085. they

  1086. may

  1087. be

  1088. one

  1089. as

  1090. we

  1091. are

  1092. one

  1093. here

  1094. it

  1095. is

  1096. at

  1097. last

  1098. this

  1099. is

  1100. Jesus

  1101. concern

  1102. for

  1103. these

  1104. men

  1105. with

  1106. him

  1107. this

  1108. night

  1109. keep

  1110. them

  1111. safe

  1112. let

  1113. no

  1114. harm

  1115. come

  1116. to

  1117. them

  1118. we

  1119. often

  1120. call

  1121. this

  1122. prayer

  1123. Jesus

  1124. high

  1125. priestly

  1126. prayer

  1127. and this

  1128. is

  1129. partly

  1130. why

  1131. this

  1132. is

  1133. probably

  1134. one

  1135. of

  1136. several

  1137. requests

  1138. but

  1139. one

  1140. of

  1141. the

  1142. first

  1143. ones

  1144. that

  1145. he

  1146. prays

  1147. for

  1148. his

  1149. followers

  1150. that's

  1151. what

  1152. priests

  1153. do

  1154. they

  1155. speak

  1156. to

  1157. God

  1158. on

  1159. behalf

  1160. of

  1161. people

  1162. and

  1163. that's

  1164. what

  1165. Jesus

  1166. is

  1167. doing

  1168. here

  1169. he's

  1170. asking

  1171. for

  1172. something

  1173. on

  1174. behalf

  1175. of

  1176. his

  1177. people

  1178. and

  1179. what

  1180. is

  1181. it

  1182. protection

  1183. why

  1184. protection

  1185. well

  1186. Jesus

  1187. gives

  1188. us

  1189. a number

  1190. of

  1191. reasons

  1192. right

  1193. here

  1194. in

  1195. his

  1196. prayer

  1197. first

  1198. protect

  1199. them

  1200. because

  1201. they are

  1202. still

  1203. in

  1204. the

  1205. world

  1206. verse

  1207. 11

  1208. this

  1209. is

  1210. something

  1211. that

  1212. Jesus

  1213. has

  1214. been

  1215. thinking

  1216. about

  1217. in

  1218. fact

  1219. it's

  1220. been

  1221. the

  1222. topic

  1223. of

  1224. conversation

  1225. this

  1226. very

  1227. night

  1228. Jesus

  1229. has

  1230. been

  1231. warning

  1232. them

  1233. about

  1234. how

  1235. the

  1236. world

  1237. will

  1238. treat

  1239. them

  1240. they

  1241. will

  1242. hate

  1243. you

  1244. chapter

  1245. 15

  1246. verse

  1247. 18

  1248. and

  1249. 19

  1250. they

  1251. will

  1252. persecute

  1253. you

  1254. chapter

  1255. 15

  1256. verse

  1257. 20

  1258. they

  1259. will

  1260. kick

  1261. you

  1262. out

  1263. of

  1264. the

  1265. synagogues

  1266. chapter

  1267. 16

  1268. verse

  1269. 2

  1270. they

  1271. will

  1272. hunt

  1273. you

  1274. down

  1275. and

  1276. try

  1277. to

  1278. take

  1279. your

  1280. life

  1281. also

  1282. same

  1283. verse

  1284. you

  1285. will

  1286. be

  1287. scattered

  1288. chapter

  1289. 16

  1290. verse

  1291. 32

  1292. you

  1293. will

  1294. have

  1295. trouble

  1296. 16

  1297. verse

  1298. 33

  1299. Jesus

  1300. knows

  1301. that it

  1302. will

  1303. not

  1304. be

  1305. easy

  1306. for

  1307. them

  1308. to

  1309. continue

  1310. on

  1311. in

  1312. this

  1313. world

  1314. and

  1315. so

  1316. Jesus

  1317. calls

  1318. on

  1319. God

  1320. he

  1321. asks

  1322. God

  1323. the

  1324. father

  1325. protect

  1326. them

  1327. keep

  1328. them

  1329. safe

  1330. in

  1331. his

  1332. second

  1333. we

  1334. see

  1335. here

  1336. in

  1337. verse

  1338. 12

  1339. just

  1340. how

  1341. personal

  1342. this

  1343. is

  1344. for

  1345. Jesus

  1346. Jesus

  1347. says

  1348. while I

  1349. was

  1350. with

  1351. them

  1352. I

  1353. protected

  1354. them

  1355. and

  1356. kept

  1357. them

  1358. safe

  1359. by

  1360. that

  1361. name

  1362. you

  1363. gave

  1364. me

  1365. this

  1366. is

  1367. personal

  1368. for

  1369. Jesus

  1370. he's

  1371. walked

  1372. three

  1373. years

  1374. with

  1375. these

  1376. men

1377. He's endured the challenges and the jeers and the insults with these men.

1378. He's been there through all of it to encourage them,

1379. to remind them as the trouble comes, don't lose heart.

1380. He's been there to remind them what's true.

1381. Remind them to have faith in God and in Him.

1382. I think this is so interesting.

1383. If you've seen any of The Chosen,

1384. that new TV series that portrays something of the life of Jesus,

1385. there's at least a few episodes in it where

1386. they kind of portray Jesus' disciples as having a bit of a bodyguard mentality.

1387. Peter especially, but the others as well.

1388. They're going to try to keep Jesus safe as He does His ministry.

1389. They're going to try to keep the crowds at bay so that Jesus can move around unhindered.

1390. Were the disciples really like that?

  1391. We don't know.

1392. We will see Peter draw his sword in the next chapter

1393. and fight to prevent Jesus' arrest in the garden.

1394. But according to Jesus, they haven't been protecting Him.

  1395. He's been protecting them.

1396. He's been watching over them,

1397. keeping them safe as the tensions have been rising,

1398. as the opposition has been growing.

1399. Do you see the heart of Christ here?

1400. He is an ever-vigilant shepherd of His sheep.

1401. He cares about them so deeply.

1402. He's making arrangements for them in this prayer

1403. to be cared for by His Father

1404. because they will remain in the world

1405. while He goes to the Father.

1406. This is personal for Jesus.

  1407. I protected them.

1408. I kept them safe while I was with them.

1409. But now, Father, I ask You to take up that work.

  1410. Watch over them.

  1411. Keep them safe.

  1412. Protect them.

  1413. Because I'm leaving.

  1414. I'm coming to You.

1415. There's a third reason that Jesus prays for their protection.

1416. And we see it in verses 11 and 12.

  1417. Jesus prays,

  1418. Holy Father, protect them

1419. so that they may be one

  1420. as we are one.

1421. Now, this sounds strange to me,

1422. probably to you as well.

1423. Protect them so that they may be one.

1424. It's like Jesus is concerned about their unity,

  1425. about them staying together,

1426. continuing to have this deep fellowship with each other.

1427. And I can't say for sure what Jesus means by this.

  1428. I can only guess.

1429. But could it be that Jesus knows

1430. what the tactic of the devil is

1431. in this hours that are coming?

1432. That He knows what the devil is going to try to do,

1433. that He's going to try to divide them

  1434. and conquer them,

  1435. to isolate them,

  1436. to scatter them,

1437. to rip this fellowship that they have

  1438. with each other apart.

1439. And so perhaps Jesus prays

1440. that God would protect them

1441. so that they would be one,

  1442. undivided,

  1443. deeply one,

  1444. together, united,

1445. just like Jesus is together

1446. and united with His Father.

1447. The devil is on the prowl.

  1448. Jesus alludes here,

  1449. to Judas,

  1450. in the next verse.

1451. He's kept all of His disciples,

1452. protecting them and keeping them safe.

1453. None of them has been lost

  1454. except one,

  1455. says Jesus.

1456. Back in John chapter 13,

    John 13:27

  1457. verse 27,

1458. this was just hours ago,

  1459. John told us this,

1460. as soon as Judas took the bread,

  1461. Satan entered into Him.

  1462. And then of course,

  1463. Judas went off to

1464. put the betrayal in motion.

1465. So the devil is on the prowl.

  1466. He's infiltrated

  1467. Jesus' circle of 12.

1468. And perhaps this prayer of Jesus

  1469. suggests that Satan means

  1470. to divide

  1471. and conquer them.

1472. And so Jesus asks the Father,

  1473. protect them

1474. so that they may be one,

1475. so that they may come through this

  1476. united together.

1477. This last part about Judas

  1478. also suggests to us

  1479. that there's another dimension

1480. to the protection that Jesus has in mind here.

1481. It's about more than just physical protection.

  1482. Jesus says,

  1483. basically,

  1484. up till now,

  1485. I've been successful.

  1486. I haven't lost

  1487. any of them

  1488. except Judas.

1489. This is about more than just

  1490. physical protection.

1491. This is about the spiritual battle

1492. that's going on as well.

1493. And Judas has been lost,

1494. which means not that he's come

  1495. to physical harm,

  1496. but that he's come

  1497. to spiritual harm,

  1498. spiritual ruin.

  1499. And so I hear

1500. in these words of Jesus

  1501. not just a plea

  1502. that the disciples

  1503. will have physical safety,

1504. but a plea that God

  1505. would keep their souls,

  1506. their faith,

  1507. that they would not

  1508. turn away from God

  1509. or from Jesus

1510. when the going gets tough

  1511. like Judas did,

1512. or that they would not

  1513. be drawn away

1514. by the allure of this world

  1515. and its offerings

1516. when they begin to sparkle

1517. like they did for Judas.

  1518. It's protect them,

  1519. keep them safe

  1520. for eternity,

  1521. for they are yours.

  1522. Now I know there's parts here

  1523. that I haven't even touched on.

1524. Some of you might have

  1525. some questions.

  1526. What does it mean

  1527. to keep them safe

  1528. by the name

  1529. that you gave me?

  1530. What scripture was fulfilled

  1531. by Judas being lost

  1532. and why is he

  1533. the son of destruction?

1534. How has glory come to Jesus

  1535. through these disciples?

  1536. Again,

  1537. there's lots of doors

  1538. to lots of different

  1539. treasure rooms

1540. off the main room here,

  1541. so I encourage you

1542. to take time on your own

1543. to search these things out,

1544. to meditate on these things.

1545. But with these last few minutes,

  1546. let's think about

  1547. how these words

  1548. apply to us.

  1549. Clearly these words

  1550. are for the disciples,

  1551. the eleven men

  1552. with Jesus at night

  1553. and possibly,

  1554. by extension,

  1555. the Marys and Marthas

  1556. and Lazaruses.

  1557. We aren't mentioned

  1558. in this prayer

  1559. until verse 20,

  1560. and we'll get there.

1561. But I think we all know

  1562. that there are

  1563. timeless principles

  1564. and truths

  1565. about Jesus

  1566. and about all

  1567. of his followers

  1568. revealed in this section

1569. that we work through today.

  1570. Jesus has come

  1571. into our world

  1572. to reveal God

  1573. to us.

1574. He's come to give us

  1575. the very words

  1576. of God himself.

  1577. The disciples

  1578. believed

  1579. that God sent Jesus.

  1580. Do you?

  1581. The disciples

  1582. knew with certainty

  1583. that Jesus came

  1584. from the Father.

  1585. Do you?

  1586. Do you?

  1587. Do you?

  1588. Do you?

  1589. Do you?

  1590. The disciples

  1591. accepted the words

  1592. that Jesus spoke

  1593. to them

  1594. from the Father.

  1595. Do you?

  1596. The disciples

  1597. kept God's word.

  1598. They held fast

  1599. to God's words.

  1600. Are you?

  1601. In the same way,

  1602. we know that Jesus

  1603. is not only

  1604. the good shepherd

  1605. of these eleven sheep

  1606. with him,

  1607. but that his care

  1608. and concern

1609. is for the whole flock.

  1610. Jesus said so

  1611. for all

  1612. who the Father

  1613. will give to him.

  1614. Do you know

  1615. that Jesus

  1616. understands

  1617. and feels

  1618. the weight

  1619. and burden

  1620. of what it's like

1621. to be in this world?

  1622. Do you know

  1623. that Jesus

  1624. asks the Father

1625. not just for the apostles,

  1626. but for you also,

  1627. that God

  1628. would protect you,

  1629. bring you through,

  1630. keep you safe

  1631. to the end

  1632. until he returns.

  1633. Jesus' desire

  1634. is that none

  1635. be lost,

  1636. not a single one.

  1637. He desires you

  1638. to make it.

  1639. And God

  1640. will answer

  1641. Jesus' prayer

  1642. for them

  1643. back then

  1644. and for you

  1645. and me

  1646. today.

  1647. so take heart

  1648. as Jesus said,

  1649. in this world

  1650. you will have trouble,

  1651. but Jesus

  1652. has prayed for you

  1653. and by his grace

  1654. if you believe

  1655. in him

  1656. like the disciples

  1657. did,

  1658. God will see

  1659. to it

  1660. that you make

  1661. it through

  1662. safe and secure

  1663. to the end

  1664. to be with him

  1665. and the Father

  1666. one forever.

  1667. Let's pray.

  1668. Amen.

  1669. Amen.

  1670. Amen.

  1671. Lord Jesus,

  1672. we address

  1673. our prayer

  1674. to you.

  1675. We thank you

  1676. that you went

  1677. to your knees

  1678. for us.

  1679. Thank you

  1680. that we're not

  1681. alone in this world.

  1682. Thank you

  1683. that you know

  1684. exactly what it's like

  1685. to live here.

  1686. And thank you

  1687. that your promises

  1688. are sure.

  1689. Thank you

  1690. that one day

  1691. you will bust

  1692. through

  1693. the clouds

  1694. in the sky

  1695. and you will

  1696. gather

  1697. all your people,

  1698. all who belong

  1699. to you

  1700. and the sorrows

  1701. and the sighs

  1702. and the troubles

  1703. and the temptations

  1704. and the sin,

  1705. all of it

  1706. of this world

  1707. will vanish,

  1708. will disappear.

  1709. You'll make

  1710. everything right

  1711. and you will

  1712. usher us

  1713. into glory

  1714. with you forever.

  1715. Oh, I pray

  1716. that we would

  1717. hold fast,

  1718. each one of us

  1719. to your words.

  1720. We ask this

  1721. for your glory

  1722. and your name.

  1723. Amen.
